Although commonly used on social media, speakers AAVE are often criticized or made fun of in a wide variety of contexts.Linguist Geoffrey Pullam described these criticisms in his<a href="https://web.stanford.edu/~zwicky/aave-is-not-se-with-mistakes.pdf"> 1999 essay "African American Vernacular English Is Not Standard English With Mistakes</a>." He wrote most speakers of standard English think AAVE is "just a badly spoken version of their language, marred by a lot of ignorant mistakes in grammar and pronunciation" used by "an ignorant urban underclass."Despite this, AAVE's lingo is now being normalized and adopted by non-Black people and corporations who've framed it as "internet slang" among other ahistorical variants.According to linguists at <a href="https://www.hawaii.edu/satocenter/langnet/definitions/aave.html#bkgd-hce">The University of Hawaii</a>, AAVE developed through the "processes of second language acquisition" among slaves. "West Africans newly arrived on plantations would have limited access to English grammatical models because the number of native speakers was so small (just a few indentured servants on each plantation)."John Rickford, professor of linguistics at Stanford University, wrote "American Ebonics was shaped by the high proportions of Creole-speaking slaves that were imported from the Caribbean in the earliest settlement periods of the thirteen original colonies."<h2>How AAVE appropriation can be harmful</h2>Those critical of the appropriation of AAVE by white or non-Black people say that the practice reinforces toxic racial power structures in society that have an actual cost for Black creators.Kayla Newman is a prime example of someone who has seemingly been harmed by the appropriation of AAVE.Newman is most recognized for the phrase she created — "on fleek."The phrase became popularized after Lewis, also known as Peaches Monroe online, <a href="https://vine.co/v/MTFn7EPvtnd/embed/simple">posted a video of herself describing her eyebrows as "on fleek.</a>" In years past, it was unlikely a corporation would use "fleek" to describe their pancakes, but in 2014, that's exactly what <a href="https://twitter.com/IHOP/status/524606157110120448">IHOP</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/DennysDiner/status/516984038868123648">Denny's</a>, and <a href="https://twitter.com/dominos/status/605862973433737216?s=20">Dominio's Pizza</a> did.Since then, the phrasing has become a bit of a phenomenon, but Lewis would not be part of that story. And, according to a <a href="https://www.vox.com/culture/2017/3/28/14777408/on-fleek-kayla-lewis-ihop-dennys-vine-twitter-cultural-appropriation">2017 Vox interview with Lewis</a>, she hadn't received any compensation for the phrase's use by companies or celebrities, and was embarking on a mission to trademark it. The 18-year-old was filming herself singing — practicing for auditions that will determine her placement in classes at the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts — when her mother's leg suddenly crashed through the ceiling in the background. "I heard this really loud noise and I turned around and see her leg plunge into my room," San Millan told Insider. The top influencer mansions where creators make content for TikTok and YouTube

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="334778" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Paul-Rudd">Paul Rudd</keyword> recently starred in a PSA that was posted on Governor Cuomo's social media accounts reminding viewers to wear <keyword id="9418" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="masks">masks</keyword> to prevent the spread of <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword>.</li><li>In the PSA, Rudd pretends to be a "young person," throwing around and deliberately butchering slang.</li><li>Much of the slang that Rudd uses to pretend to be a "young person" is actually Black slang, demonstrating a tendency for Black <keyword id="24504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="culture">culture</keyword> to be appropriated and redefined as "internet culture."</li><li>The advertisement paradoxically targets millennials while seemingly spoofing Gen Z teens, playing out as a tired iteration of the "hello fellow kids" meme.</li></ul>Paul Rudd starred in a recent PSA that was released on Governor <keyword id="196530" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Andrew-Cuomo">Andrew Cuomo</keyword>'s social channels. Explicitly targeted towards millennials, Rudd cosplays as a fellow "young person," throwing around slang in what's theoretically a humorous bid to convince fellow "young people" to wear masks to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5ngNuuPpmj8" frameborder="0"></iframe>"Paul Rudd here, actor and certified young person," Rudd says in the video. "Few days ago I was talking on the iPhone with my homie, Governor Cuomo, and he's just going off about us millennials need to wear masks. Because, get this, apparently a lot of COVID is transmitted by us millennials — no cap."Throughout the video, Rudd drops a handful of phrases like "fam, let's real talk" to "slide that into your DMs and Twitch it," which he says before strumming a double-necked guitar and popping his hip. At one point in the video, a transparent image of Billie Eilish pops up as Rudd pretends to pick up a call from her, saying, "man, I wanna stan you. You're so my bae."The ad just keeps going, and although it's meant to be humorous and play to pre-existing "<a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/7/13/15966094/30-rock-buscemi-how-do-you-do-fellow-kids-meme-kill-it-please">hello fellow kids</a>" gags, in many instances it just comes off as cringey and demeaning. "Caring about other people is the new not caring about other people," Rudd says, perpetuating the idea that young people are largely apathetic to the concerns of their peers.The ad doesn't seem to have a clear idea of who it's targeting or spoofing. In one sequence, Rudd pretends to do a TikTok dance challenge. While TikTok users are far from limited to just Gen Z teens, it's a cultural reference that reads as spoofing zoomers (members of Gen Z) — not millennials who may be in their upper 30s. The ad has also been criticised for spoofing Black slang. "this isn't millennial y'all," Twitter user @Judnikki wrote. "it's a white guy using explicitly Black slang poorly. it's not funny. it's corny and your white ass knows it."<blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="">—FLEEKNIK (@Judnikki) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1305632092001153024?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">September 14, 2020</a></blockquote>Much of what's considered "young people" slang or "internet speak" is actually <a href="https://www.insider.com/internet-slang-origin-i-oop-meaning-sksk-vsco-girls-stans-2020-1">appropriated from Black people</a>. One influencer, Brittany Broski, came under fire in August for saying that Black slang was part of "internet culture" and "stan culture." She later apologized for her comments, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/brittany-broksi-tiktok-aave-internet-culture-slang-appropriation-chile-2020">as Insider's Bria Overs wrote</a>, the appropriation of Black slang often has negative effects on Black creators themselves. Furthermore, Black slang becomes subsumed into white stereotypes like "VSCO girls" — and in this case, Rudd's "young person."Ultimately, the ad seems to tie itself in a bit of a knot. Rudd's "young person" character spoofs stereotypes of Gen Z, using Black slang, in a PSA explicitly targeting millennials, who are not teenagers. It's targeting those who will think the "hello fellow kids" act is funny. As <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2017/7/13/15966094/30-rock-buscemi-how-do-you-do-fellow-kids-meme-kill-it-please">Kaitlyn Tiffany wrote in The Verge</a>, the "hello fellow kids" meme — trying to identify with a generation younger than you, but in a cool, self-aware way — was already uncool back when that piece was published in 2017.The advertisement is <a href="https://twitter.com/janemarielynch/status/1305823518139936768?s=20">clearly</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/melissadderosa/status/1305825833500712960?s=20">resonating</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/GovLauraKelly/status/1305911659542843392?s=20">with some</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/melissafumero/status/1305883005932593158?s=20">people</a>. Now the duo is back with a second season, which premiered on January 10. "I posted a small clip on Twitter saying, 'Oh, we aren't the slowest growing channel anymore.'"Lawley, 24, and Caylen, 27 said they found the inspiration for "The Reality House" after filming the series, "Last YouTuber To Leave The Box," where friends played for the chance to win $10,000. Challenges, alongside drama and controversial content, tend to preform well on YouTube.For example, take 21-year-old YouTube star Tana Mongeau (5 million subscribers) who built an empire off her authentic (and often controversial) videos. Mongeau continues to make headlines for <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-called-out-for-most-extreme-photo-editing-transformation-2019-11">extreme photo editing</a>, her changing relationship status, and her general candor with her viewers, like this recent <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb3QGw4ekKE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">17-minute-long lingerie-haul video</a> in which she explains why <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-youtuber-said-she-turned-down-2-million-from-bang-energy-2019-11">she turned down a $2 million sponsorship</a>. And business is booming. Her first product launch, a perfume called Tana by Tana, <a href="https://www.insider.com/tana-mongeau-announcement-video-commercial-perfume-ad-2020-1">sold out in 76 minutes</a>."We want this to be as authentic as possible," Caylen said of his show. "But we do put them in situations where things can easily get heated and escalate quickly," he admitted.From the contestants to the production, Lawley and Caylen said their friends chipped in for free. (SeatGeek was recently featured in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-brands-in-influencer-marketing-list-youtube-instagram-tiktok-2020-1">Business Insider's ranking of the 17 top influencer-marketing brands</a>.)SeatGeek has also built long business relationships with top internet stars like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-youtube-star-david-dobriks-seatgeek-influencer-marketing-deal-2019-9">David Dobrik</a>, who has 15 million subscribers on YouTube and a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-youtube-star-david-dobriks-seatgeek-influencer-marketing-deal-2019-9">yearlong contract with the company</a>. "SeatGeek is a blessing to work with because the company itself gives us so much creative freedom with how we promote their website and app," Caylen said. "The brands that we have worked with before want to see a rough draft of the episodes, and they have notes. SeatGeek doesn't really do that. They trust us and what we are going to promote." Caylen and Lawley said they enjoy having full creative control over their show right now, but eventually they would want to sell it, or partner with a larger media company to produce more seasons. "There's only a certain level that we can take it, just us producing it and doing everything ourselves," Lawley said. "Eventually, we would love to have people on board and maybe sell it to a company that would want to work with us." YouTube duo Kian and JC explain their big ambitions for 'The Reality House,' their show where influencers compete for $50,000

Sadowski's videos went viral on TikTok, and he became known for the intricate characters in his comedy skits. As the app surged, his TikTok account quickly turned from an after-school activity to a business.Today, Sadowski has around 4 million followers on his main page <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@itssadowski">Laughwithjosh</a>. On average, his popular videos gain between 1 million and 3 million views. Sadowski treats his TikTok account and various social-media channels - he has <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGhksv65CnfT4WdnGpgoMzQ/videos">182,000 subscribers on YouTube</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/laughwithjosh/?utm_source=ig_profile_share&amp;igshid=1wft5vypfb0v3">151,000 followers on Instagram</a> - as a full-time business. He's done deals with brands like Chipotle and Bumble for sponsorships and recently started managing a group of nine TikTok creators.He's also working toward starting a TikTok creator house in Los Angeles and he said his management group will be going on tour this summer."The business just never stops growing," he told Business Insider. "Ultimately, it's about looking at where you can keep going." Sadowski spoke with Business Insider about his growing digital company, how he earns money online, and the rates he charges brands. <h2>Working with brands like Chipotle and Bumble on campaigns </h2>In July 2019, Sadowski began to take his TikTok account more seriously. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-tiktok-stars-make-sponsorships-live-streaming-merchandise-2019-11">main four ways</a> creators on TikTok can use the platform to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-tiktok-stars-make-sponsorships-live-streaming-merchandise-2019-11">generate revenue</a> are through sponsorships, selling merchandise, livestreaming, and affiliate marketing. Sadowski began earning money on TikTok once he started working with brands, he said. He actively promotes companies like Chipotle, and he was included in Chiptole's #TikTokTimeout campaign alongside creators like David Dobrik and Brittany Broski earlier this year. He's also built long-term relationships with brands like the dating app Bumble, which was originally brought to him through an influencer marketing agency, he said. In his first campaign with Bumble, Sadowski presented a comedy skit and a rate. The brand accepted and he's worked with it multiple times since.When he was first getting started, Sadowski would pitch brands directly on sponsorship opportunities. He'd create TikTok skits with a certain brand in mind and then he'd take that video (before it was published) and send it to the brand, with the full creative pitch written out. Now, he has enough incoming requests that he doesn't go out to brands for himself, though he still does for the creators he manages."If you truly want a business have a strategy and be professional," he advised other TikTok creators trying to land those first deals. "If you don't have a manager or someone that represents you, have a rate sheet and a little portfolio about yourself and what you've done in the past."<h2>'A lot of people are afraid of jumping into a contract or not knowing what to say to a brand'</h2>While sponsorship rates can vary depending on the creator and the brand, Sadowski has some rules of thumb."I think you should generally charge a brand between $5,000 and $10,000 if you have one million followers and your fans are very active," he said. "And they are new followers, not an old account and you're getting 1,000 views a video."Sadowski said he usually charges brands based on metrics like views or likes.He charges around $10,000 for every 100,000 likes a single video receives, he said. And he said he is testing how charging a CPM rate (cost per thousand views) would work. But he doesn't charge based on follower count. For a song promotion - which is when a creator works with an artist or record label to promote a song on TikTok - he charges around $2,000 for every 500,000 views, he said. He added that along with song promotions, some of the creators he manages earn money by selling and distributing their music to their fans directly through TikTok."A lot of people are afraid of jumping into a contract or not knowing what to say to a brand," he said. But due to the coronavirus pandemic, his plans have now been put on hold. Collab groups and houses, like Sway LA or Hype House, are a popular trend among TikTok influencers, and a way for these stars to create content together.Some of these houses have temporarily closed in response to the outbreak, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rihanna-fenty-beauty-tiktok-house-closes-due-to-coronavirus-concerns-2020-3">like Rihanna's Fenty Beauty House, which was home to five creators.</a> And plans for others, like Sadowski's, have been postponed.His group wants to move into a rented house in LA once it's safe to do so, he told Business Insider, and tour plans are currently being rescheduled. "The blessing is that we are able to continue working and live off of what we do," he said. "I'm not stressed about that side of things because content is still being produced."While Sadowski has been quarantined at his family's home in Missouri, he has been working on content for his digital business and strategically planning out how he will launch the house. Sadowski spoke with Business Insider about what the process is like to develop a TikTok collab house and what he wants to do differently from other creator groups.<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e84ad9a14f18f5bd659da19-2400/img-2703.jpg" alt="Josh Sadowksi" /><h2>How Sadowski got famous on TikTok </h2>Sadowksi began filming videos for TikTok when he was a senior in high school. After his videos went viral, he became known for the intricate characters in his comedy skits. As the app surged, his TikTok account quickly turned from an after-school activity to a business.Sadowski treats his TikTok account and various social-media channels - he has <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGhksv65CnfT4WdnGpgoMzQ/videos">184,000 subscribers on YouTube</a> and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/laughwithjosh/?utm_source=ig_profile_share&amp;igshid=1wft5vypfb0v3">157,000 followers on Instagram</a> - as a full-time career.He earns money through brand sponsorships and by managing creators and helping them land deals. The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-tiktok-stars-make-sponsorships-live-streaming-merchandise-2019-11">main four ways</a> creators on TikTok can use the platform to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-tiktok-stars-make-sponsorships-live-streaming-merchandise-2019-11">generate revenue</a> are through sponsorships, selling merchandise, livestreaming, and affiliate marketing. Sadowski actively promotes companies like Chipotle, and he was included in Chipotle's #TikTokTimeout campaign alongside creators like David Dobrik and Brittany Broski earlier this year. He's also built long-term relationships with brands for the creators he manages, and he plans to land collective brand deals for the house as a whole, as a way to help cover the cost of living together.The TikTok creators that will be moving into the house are Sadowski, Hope Schwing (<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@hope_schwing?lang=en">7.2 million TikTok followers</a>), AceCrossCrook (<a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@acecrosscrook?lang=en">2.4 million TikTok followers</a>), and Sam Vicchiollo <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@samvicchiollo">(951,000 TikTok followers</a>).Sadowski's original plan was to get the creator house at the end of March and move in during the first week of April. Now, he said they will look for a place and move in whenever it's safe. In the meantime, they are still working with brands and doing song promos, he's just communicating with everyone from home through video calls. "If things calm down, the idea is to have everyone who is moving into the house actually be in a two-week quarantine," he said, before officially moving in. <h2>Setting house rules </h2>Sadowski has visited other TikTok creator houses in LA. He said by looking at what works (and doesn't work) for other creators, he's been able to work out his own plan. He said the way some of the other houses are run can be "chaotic," with groups of people all over the place. His creator collective house will operate differently and won't be open to large groups of friends at all times, he said. "We will have friends and visitors, just very cautiously, and well scheduled," he said. "It's going to be very organized, not just because of drama but also because of the health risk."Hype House, the most popular TikTok group, <a href="https://www.insider.com/hype-house-members-drama-split-daisy-2020-3">has had some legal drama</a> recently, <a href="https://www.insider.com/hype-house-members-drama-split-daisy-2020-3">causing some members to leave the group</a>. Tensions between two of the collective's most recognizable faces, Daisy Keech and Thomas Petrou, has escalated into a legal dispute involving multiple applications to trademark the collective's name, <a href="https://www.insider.com/hype-house-members-drama-split-daisy-2020-3">Insider recently reported</a>. "There's going be a community guideline," Sadowski said. "Be honest, be open, I don't want any drama building up so if you have an issue with anything, or with me, you can come and tell me directly and we will fix the issue."More specifically, some of the community guidelines will include certain rules in place around how content will be produced throughout the week, how many videos each creator should get done, and scheduled meetings. Each creator who lives in the house will be required to post a certain amount of content each week, Sadowski said. The house will also have its own name, which will help them establish a larger brand similar to Hype House (which has <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@thehypehouse?lang=en">13 million followers on TikTok</a>). Payment in exchange for living in the house is still being figured out, he said, and he added that "housing will likely be provided to the creators in exchange for occasional content." How much they will spend on rent depends on how many brands they get on board to sponsor the group, but for now they are looking at around $15,000 a month, he said. They are looking to sign a short-term, month-to-month lease, and once they are settled in LA, they may move into a larger $30,o00 a month house that Sadowski "has his eyes on," he said. Rent-free living for creators is common among other collab houses, like Sway House, a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tik-tok-stars-live-rent-free-in-mansion-sway-house-2020-1">Bel Air mansion home to six TikTok stars represented by TalentX Entertainment</a>.
