Sunak, who was born in 1980 and brought up in Hampshire, UK after his grandparents moved there from Punjab, was a ‘first generation immigrant.’ Sunak is married to <keyword id="80833" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Akshata-Murthy">Akshata Murthy</keyword>, the daughter of the Indian billionaire and co-founder of IT services giant Infosys Narayana Murthy. “ I’m a first generation immigrant. My parents emigrated here, so you've got this generation of people who are born here, their parents were not born here, and they've come to this country to make a life,” he had once said. After completing his education at the elite private school Winchester College in the UK, he did his MBA from Stanford University and worked as an analyst for the investment banking firm Goldman Sachs and later moved on to become co-founder to a global investment firm. Early in the morning Friday, August 2, Hannah Smith was found dead in her family home in Leicestershire, England. The 14-year-old had hanged herself, and was discovered in her bedroom by her older sister.
The motives behind suicide are often complex and it can be hard to discern one key trigger, but when Hannah's father checked her online trail, he was sure he had found it.
Hannah had been using a website called <a href="http://ask.fm/">Ask.Fm</a>, which allows people to post questions and have them answered anonymously. The website reportedly had more than 13 million unique visitors in June, meaning that Latvian-based website has eclipsed its similar rival Formspring, a<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-formspring-2013-7"> U.S.-based site used by NYC mayoral hopeful Anthony Weiner for sexual purposes</a>.
For Hannah, the site offered something her real world apparently didn't provide — a chance to confide in an online community about the return of her childhood eczema and her recent depression. However, she didn't find support. When her father checked one message that described Hannah's habitual self-harming, she found that the anonymous users who had responded to the question were insulting her — telling her to "drink bleach," "go get cancer," and "die," <a href="http://www.channel4.com/news/spotlight-on-ask-fm-after-teen-suicide-hannah-smith-cyberbullying">according to Channel 4</a>.
Hannah's father is sure these comments helped drive his daughter to suicide, and he wants something done about it. “How many more ­teenagers will kill themselves because of online abuse before ­something is done?" <a href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/hannah-smith-dad-says-internet-2129280">David Smith told the</a> Daily Mirror. "These sick people are just able to go online and hide behind a mask of anonymity while they abuse vulnerable teenagers.<span style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; font-weight: normal; font-style: normal; font-size: 13.333333969116211px; font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; vertical-align: baseline; color: #000000; font-variant: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 18.00347328186035px; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;">"
He also said he believes that the people who run the website should be convicted of "manslaughter."
Within the <keyword id="6361754" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="United-Kingdom">United Kingdom</keyword> there's a huge amount of sympathy for David Smith and his family. An online petition demanding that the government <a href="http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/48886">"step in and insist that Ask.fm and similar sites help us protect our young people"</a> is circulating. Just a few hours after it went live, the petition had more than 6,400 signatures. A Facebook page dedicated to Hannah has 45,000 "likes."
More broadly, there are growing signs the British public are becoming increasingly upset by online "trolls" who use their anonymity to harass and threaten others online. On Sunday, <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/08/04/twitter-silence_n_3702928.html">dozens of prominent Twitter users went silent for 24 hours</a>, hoping to bring attention to vile threats that had been sent anonymously to a number of users. More than 130,000 <a href="https://www.change.org/en-GB/petitions/twitter-add-a-report-abuse-button-to-tweets">people have signed a petition asking Twitter to add a "report abuse" button to the service</a>.
The issue had been brought to light by Caroline Criado-Perez, a feminist campaigner, Stella Creasy, a member of Britain’s parliament, and Mary Beard, a classics professor, who began retweeting the rape threats they had <a href="http://www.economist.com/blogs/schumpeter/2013/08/abuse-twitter">received from anonymous sources on Twitter at the end of July</a>. Their crime? Supporting a campaign to feature <a href="http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/07/26/jane-austen-bank-note-earns-huzzahs-and-nitpicking/?_r=0">Jane Austen on a 10 pound note</a>.
Right now, it's unclear what all this attention on online trolls will do. <keyword id="6354616" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> <a href="http://blog.uk.twitter.com/2013/07/we-hear-you.html">has ruled out manually reviewing each tweet</a>, though it has updated its terms and conditions and attempted to make it easier to report abuse. Ask.fm's owners <a href="http://news.sky.com/story/1124978/teen-suicide-after-troll-abuse-a-true-tragedy">have released a statement</a> that called Hannah's death a "true tragedy" and has promised to cooperate with police.
It's hardly a new problem (Channel 4 notes that at least four other teenagers have killed themselves after being bullied on Ask.Fm), but companies are not exactly compelled to regulate abuse online. The Economist <a href="http://www.economist.com/blogs/schumpeter/2013/08/abuse-twitter">notes that the legal responsibility of websites</a> like Facebook and Ask.Fm depends quite a bit on how robust the abuse protocols the companies set up are — the more robust they are, the more liable they would be legally.
However, there may be a tipping point, and online companies should not be surprised if the British government does take steps to combat the problem of "trolls." While the United States may pride itself on free speech and many technological experts support anonymity online, the British government has no such qualms. What's more, David Cameron's Conservative government has shown itself willing to get involved in complicated matters of freedom online — take the ambitious (<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/david-camerons-awkward-porn-ban-2013-7">maybe too ambitious</a>) plan to "ban" Internet pornography, for example.
There is another depressing takeaway though — even when confronted with their sadism, trolls frequently double down. Even as the controversy over online threats and anonymous insults raged, the trolls are still trolling; female Twitter users who complained about rape threats <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/aug/05/twitter-bomb-threats-women">are now getting anonymous bomb threats</a>, and <a href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/hannah-smith-vile-trolls-hijack-2130793">the Facebook tribute page to Hannah Smith has seen her branded</a> a "coward" and a "pathetic suicide case."

Sunak, born in the UK to a general practitioner father and pharmacist mother, announced that the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) would be hiked from 400 pounds to 624 pounds. "Migrants benefit from our NHS (National Health Service). And we all want them to do so - but it's right that what people get out, they also put in," the 39-year-old Chancellor of the Exchequer said in his Budget statement in the House of Commons on Wednesday. "There is a surcharge already, but it doesn't properly reflect the benefits people receive. So, as we promised in our manifesto, we are increasing the Immigration Health Surcharge to 624 pounds, with a discounted rate for children," he said. The hike was expected as it was in the December 2019 General Election manifesto of the Boris Johnson-led government, but its timing is now confirmed as this year. A new discounted rate of 470 pounds has been incorporated for children aged under 18, but the lower rate for international students is also set for a rise -- from 300 pounds to 470 pounds. The IHS was introduced in April 2015 and from December 2018 it was hiked from 200 pounds to 400 pounds per year. It is imposed on anyone in the UK on a work, study or family visa for longer than six months in order to raise additional funds for the country's state-funded NHS. The British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO), the UK's largest representative body for Indian-origin doctors, has been lobbying the UK Home Office for a rethink over the charge as it would have an adverse impact on their attempt to recruit more healthcare professionals from India to meet staff shortages in the NHS. Indian industry warned that the further hike would mean an added burden on already high visa fees. "The increase in the health surcharge to 620 pounds will add to the already expensive visa fees for overseas skilled workers. This will be an additional burden on Indian businesses operating in the UK," said Baroness Usha Prashar, Chair of the UK Council of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). FICCI described the overall Budget as a "balanced and pragmatic" one against the backdrop of the global outbreak of COVID-19. "Increased investment in R&amp;D (Research and Development) to 22 billion pounds a year and the announcement of 130 million pounds of new funding to extend Startup Loans will give a major boost to innovation and entrepreneurship," Prashar said. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div><ul><li>Chrissy Chambers, half of YouTube duo BriaAndChrissy, won a legal case Wednesday.</li><li>She sought damages at the UK's High Court for videos published on RedTube by her ex.</li><li>The videos were online for almost two years, and included her name and age.</li><li>The court case was described as the first of its kind.</li></ul> A female YouTube star set a legal precedent in the UK by successfully suing her ex-boyfriend for uploading revenge porn of the two of them having sex.Chrissy Chambers, who runs the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/user/BriaAndChrissy/">750,000-subscriber BriaAndChrissy YouTube channel</a>, was awarded "substantial" damages by the High Court in London after a ruling on Wednesday.Chambers sued her ex-boyfriend, a British man who has not been named, after he recorded and uploaded videos of them having sex to the porn site RedTube.Chambers is now in a relationship with Bria Kam, the co-star of her YouTube channel, which describes them as a "singing duo/lesbian couple with original music, making videos that inspire."According to a report in The Times newspaper, the recordings were made without Chambers' knowledge while she was in the relationship with the man from 2008 to 2009.He uploaded six videos in 2011 and 2012, the report said, some of which included her full name and her age at the time (18).Chambers did not find out about them for almost two years, when she started to get complaints from viewers on YouTube who mistakenly believed she had created the videos intentionally.Chambers, who is American and lives in Los Angeles, found it difficult to take legal action over the videos because of grey areas in the law.According to The Times, she could not sue in the US because the videos were uploaded in Britain. And British authorities could do little about the videos, as they were recorded in the US, and were also published before new revenge porn laws came into effect.With no criminal options, Chambers instead launched a civil case against her boyfriend in Britain, accusing him of breach of confidence, misuse of private information, and harassment. It had widely been reported as the first case of its kind.The High Court was told that he accepted the charges, and awarded "substantial" damages to Chambers. The precise figure has not been named. The man will also have to pay Chambers' legal costs.After winning the case, Chambers wrote on Instagram that she "could not be more elated." Speaking at the launch of the new <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/nokia/">Nokia</a> <keyword id="10833" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Phones">phones</keyword> at the <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/mwc/">Mobile World Congress</a> in Barcelona, CEO Stephen Elop, says that Nokia hopes to capture an important part of the market.
"We did this because regardless of what you spend on a mobile phone you always want, and you deserve, the very best experience," he said.
According to Pekka Haverinen, the Nokia press spokesperson, the phone also has a very long <keyword id="158949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Battery-life">battery life</keyword> of up to 35 days on one charge.
"You can talk from sunrise to sunset with one charge," he said.
The Nokia 105, which has a colour screen and an FM radio, is expected to be in the stores before the end of March this year. The device is aimed at developing countries but could be popular in Britain as a back-up handset.
The company unveiled two new Windows 8 smartphones, the Lumia 520 and the Lumia 720.
The 520 is the company's cheapest Windows 8 handset and has a four-inch display, a 1GHz dual-core processor and 8GB of storage. The 720 is a mid-range device, offering a 4.3-inch display, 1GHz dual-core processor and 512MB RAM.
Nokia was the world's third-largest maker of smartphones last year, according to research firm IDC, but most of its sales consist of older, simpler non-Windows smartphones - a dwindling market.
