In a separate statement, the AFA said it would also seek to play a friendly on the now vacant FIFA date. Brazil and Argentina not to replay Football World Cup qualifier

The World Cup is just getting started and widespread protests <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cnn-producer-injured-police-riot-world-cup-2014-6">have already become an undeniable presence at the tournament</a>. Brazilians have been protesting the tournament since last June, when the country hosted the Confederations Cup, as a "dress rehearsal" for the much larger World Cup.

"There's <a href="http://diebenow.com/content/reddit-picture-pretty-much-sums-why-were-against-world-cup-brazil">a woman eating something inside a dumpster because she's poor</a>, while people are going to watch an expensive football match," explains Reddit user "Acronopio," who <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/1hazkj/this_picture_pretty_much_sums_up_why_were_against/">posted the image</a>. "I've seen that scene many times in my life in Brazil. THAT'S the problem … I think this should be a high-priority problem instead of spending a lot of money with stadiums, hotels, and other expenses that no one will use them after the World Cup."
The 2014 World Cup has cost Brazil a whopping $11 billion and, as many have noted, that money rarely <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/world-cup-financial-gains-rarely-materialize-for-host-1.2671024">results in any economic benefit for the country</a>.
Brazilians say that the money would have been better spent elsewhere.
"We love the World Cup and our national team. But we are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/world-cup-protests-in-brazil-2014-5">not ready to host the tournament, and the money is better used on infrastructure, schools and hospitals</a>," said Juan da Silva, a sociology student from São Paolo University and a protester at a Sao Paolo protest last month.

After he decided to play for Spain, an outraged Brazilian football federation went a step further than those Madrid fans. They declared that <a href="http://www.espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1600013/cbf-want-action-taken-atletico-madrid-forward-diego-costa?cc=5901">Costa should be stripped of his Brazilian citizenship</a>.
Costa became the most sought-after center forward in the world on both the club and international level this season. He scored 36 goals in all competitions for Atletico Madrid, leading them to the Champions League final and a deep La Liga title run.
With the eligibility to play for both Spain and Brazil, he found himself in the middle of a tense tug-of-war between the two best teams in the world.

He made his decision official in October, infuriating Brazil in the process, and stepped onto the field in a Spanish shirt for the first time in a March 2014 friendly - almost exactly a year after doing the same thing for Brazil.
Brazil's federation said he should be stripped of his citizenship and <a href="http://www.espnfc.com/news/story/_/id/1600013/cbf-want-action-taken-atletico-madrid-forward-diego-costa?cc=5901">accused him of making the switch for money</a>.
Brazilian coach Luiz Felipe Scolari released a strongly worded statement saying, basically, that <a href="http://www.insideworldsoccer.com/2013/10/diego-costa-chooses-represent-spain-not-brazil-nationality.html">Brazil wouldn't want a traitor like him anyway</a>:
"A Brazilian player who refuses to wear the shirt of the Brazilian national team and compete in a World Cup in your country is automatically withdrawn. He is turning his back on a dream of millions, to represent our national team, the five-time champions in a World Cup in Brazil."
We see dual citizens change allegiances all the time. But Costa's case is special. He's one of the best players in the world, both teams have holes at his position, and he switched in a World Cup year.
Brazil has a strong back line and a bevy of creative midfield players. Their lone weakness is the lack of a focal point at striker - something Costa would have been perfect for.
Spain, on the other hand, may have found a solution to their striker problems in Costa. While they've been the most dominant team in the world in the last six years, they've done it without a consistent presence up top. During the 2012 Euros, they even deployed a false-9 - a striker-less formation.
Costa is just what Spain needs.
Still, though, there's the impression that he hasn't been fully embraced by Spanish fans. He's the type of player you love when he's on your team but <a href="http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/reds-target-costa-most-hated-player-in-la-liga-29469666.html">hate when he's on the other team</a>.

"Costa is a tough, aggressive player. One of the words that is often used to describe him is 'jailhouse.' He winds people up and gets wound up back; as one newspaper put it, he has 'arms like a Swiss Army Knife.' He never pulls out of a tackle, he bullies defenders and he doesn't mind pulling a dirty trick or two. He is good at what in Spain is sometimes called 'the other football.' Costa came into this season having already picked up 35 yellow cards in his career - only five players in the league have committed more fouls than him this season."
He gets yellow cards. He mixes it up with opponents. He snubs Brazil and offers a somewhat flip "Why not?" as an explanation.

It also contains some allegations related to the 2010 World Cup and 2011 FIFA presidential election.Here are the most damning allegations:<ul><li>The sports marketing company Datisa allegedly agreed to pay $110 million in bribes to CONCACAF and CONMEBOL officials for four Copa America tournaments between 2015 and 2019, including the 2016 Copa America Centenario (which will take place in the US and include North American teams).</li></ul><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>According to the DOJ, Datisa - a new company jointly owned by three existing sports marketing groups from across the region - agreed to pay $20 million in bribes to 11 CONMEBOL officials for each edition of the tournament.The indictment claims, "Each $20 million payment was to be divided among the bribe recipients as follows: $3 million to each of the 'top' three CONMEBOL officials (the president of the confederation and the presidents of the Brazilian and Argentinian federations); $1.5 million to each of the seven other CONMEBOL federation presidents; and $500,000 to an eleventh CONMEBOL official."More from the indictment:<ul><li>Former Concacaf president Jack Warner allegedly bought a condo in Miami in 2005 with money from a Concacaf-affiliated fund that was partially supported by FIFA's Financial Assistance Programme.</li><li>Warner organized a special meeting of Caribbean soccer officials in Trinidad and Tobago before the FIFA presidential election in 2011. At the meeting, FIFA presidential candidate Mohamed Bin Hammam (identified in the indictment as Co-Conspirator #7) talked to the meeting and said he wanted their support. After the meeting, Warner allegedly told the officials they could pick up a "gift" at the hotel's conference room later. In the conference room, the indictment alleges, was an envelope filled with $40,000 for each official provided by Bin Hammam.</li><li>After agreeing to sell the rights to the 1993, 1995, and 1997 Copa Americas to the company Traffic Brazil, former CONMEBOL president Nicolás Leoz allegedly refused to show up at a ceremony to sign the contract. In a meeting afterward, the DOJ says "he did not think it fair that he did not also make money" and solicited a six-figure bribe from Traffic founder Jose Hawilla (identified as Co-Conspirator #2 in the indictment).</li><li>Leoz took bribes from Hawilla until the company lost the Copa America rights in 2011, the DOJ alleges, by which time his payments had ballooned to the seven figures.</li><li>Hawilla allegedly paid the Argentinian football federation "tens of millions of dollars per edition of the Copa America" in exchange for Argentina guaranteeing to use their best players.</li><li>Jack Warner was one of three executive committee members who accepted a $10 million payment on the behalf of the Caribbean Football Union from the South African bid committee to "support the African diaspora," according to the indictment, before the vote for the 2010 World Cup. Warner allegedly diverted some of the money to himself, and paid fellow Concacaf executive Chuck Blazer (identified as Co-Conspirator #1) $750,000 million.</li><li>Before that, Warner allegedly once instructed a family member to fly to Paris, pick up a briefcase full of $10,000 stacks of money provided by a South African bid committee official, and then fly back to Trinidad and Tobago a few hours later.</li></ul>Harwilla pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy, money laundering conspiracy, and obstruction of justice and agreed to forfeit $151 million, according to the DOJ. The most damning bribery allegations from the bombshell case against FIFA

Disgruntled subway workers who have caused transport chaos in Sao Paulo days before it hosts the World Cup opening match voted Sunday to continue their strike, ignoring a court ruling.
"Our assembly voted to continue the strike. Now we're deciding our next steps," said a union spokeswoman, hours after judges ordered the union to pay a 500,000-real ($222,000) fine for every day the four-day-old strike continues.
The ruling came as more teams arrived in Brazil, with Germany greeted by several hundred people at its northeastern base and England landing in the picturesque city of Rio de Janeiro.
Eighteen of the 32 teams are now on the ground, including the hosts, but the chaos gripping Sao Paulo -- the latest in a wave of strikes and protests ahead of the tournament -- has distracted the usually passionate footballing nation from the World Cup build-up.
"The court ruled the strike was abusive," said union spokesman Thiago Marcelino Pereira.
The strike over wage demands is the latest social upheaval to hit Brazil, where protesters angry at the World Cup's $11-billion bill have staged demonstrations.
The five-line subway system has been partially operating, but trains were not arriving at the Corinthians Arena that will host the opening game.
Union workers have reduced an initial demand for a 16.5-percent wage hike to 12.2 percent, but employers are offering only 8.7 percent.
The subway standoff led to a clash Friday between picketing strikers and police inside a metro station, with authorities swinging truncheons and firing tear gas to disperse the protesters.
<h3>Unfinished stadium</h3>
Authorities are hard-pressed to resolve the latest labor dispute to avoid another embarrassing incident in a World Cup hit by delays, cost overruns and protests even before it has started.
The 61,600-capacity Corinthians Arena has itself been plagued by delays, and construction workers were racing against the clock over the weekend to finish it before the opening whistle.
Late Saturday, workers were wiping seats, checking beams and installing wiring in two temporary stands for 20,000 fans. VIP room sofas and fridges for food stands were still wrapped in plastic.
"There's still much to do," said one construction worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Another used his sleeve to wipe sweat from his forehead as he said: "It will be ready before the World Cup."
Delays at five of the 12 host stadiums have contributed to the rising bill of hosting the tournament, infuriating many Brazilians who have held protests demanding President Dilma Rousseff spend the money on hospitals and education instead.
Rousseff charged Friday that there was a "systematic campaign" against the World Cup and her government ahead of October 5 elections in which she is seeking re-election.
A leftist political prisoner during the 1964-1985 military dictatorship, she said that even in the darkest days of regime abuses, "we did not confuse the World Cup with politics."
The president insists the money spent on the tournament will leave a legacy of modernized airports and transport infrastructure that will benefit Brazil for years to come.
But much of the other promised train and road infrastructure has been shelved, and the original deadline to finish the stadiums -- December 31 -- was repeatedly pushed back because of construction delays.
Last year's Confederations Cup, a World Cup dress rehearsal, saw more than a million people take to the streets, but this year's demonstrations have been smaller.
