<ul><li>Due to inflation, theatres across the board have increased their prices for movie tickets and food and beverages by 5-20%.</li><li>However, their sales remain unaffected so far.</li><li>After almost two years of dry spell, multiplexes and single screens are seeing a strong recovery in 2022.</li><li>Despite costly tickets, consumer sentiment remains high as they flock to watch big-ticket movies on the silver screen with their loved ones.</li></ul>India’s cinema industry went through a severe drought due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Several pandemic-induced country-wide lockdowns forced theatres to shut down completely for more than 18 months, leading to a significant drop in revenue. However, after opening their doors to viewers in the second half of 2021, theatres are back to the pre-pandemic level of collections this month. Inox Leisure’s chief programming officer, Rajender Singh Jyala, said, “Last three months have been good for us. On average, we are clocking more than ₹1000-1500 crore every month.” Sharing which movies set the ball rolling at the multiplex chain this year, Jyala added, “Movies RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi pushed the recovery. Before that, Kashmir Files and now with Bhool Bhulaiya 2, our footfalls and domestic ticket sales are at pre-pandemic level or even better.” With eagerly-awaited Bollywood movies such as Prithviraj, Brahmastra, and Lal Singh Chaddha slated to be released in the next three to four months, Jyala is optimistic that the momentum will continue this year. With its current progression, 2022 might turn out to be a golden year for the cinema industry, driven by home-grown content. Media consulting firm Ormax Media’s Partner, Gautam Jain, said, “The overall domestic <keyword id="25892" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="box-office" source="Orion">box office</keyword> collections have crossed the ₹4000 crore gross mark from January to April. This is the highest gross box office collection for January to April since 2018." "Given this growth trajectory and looking at the line-up of films slated to release this year, a gross box office collection of ₹12,000 crore looks possible, which would make this year the highest ever in terms of the gross box office [collection]," he further added. While INOX has reverted to the pre-pandemic level on all metrics, Ormax Jain said that the cinema industry’s overall footfalls and ticket sales are still lower than the pre-pandemic levels. Explaining why the gross box office revenue is higher than 2019 while footfalls continue to be low, Jain said, “The gross box office collections are higher due to the ticket prices being higher by 15-30% across languages. The ticket prices have increased even in south markets.” Cinema-lovers ignore soaring inflation, theatres remain unaffected As the cinema industry jumped past the first major roadblock that COVID-19 threw in its path, it faced another challenge this month – soaring inflation. The rise in inflation has affected all industries. The Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) industry has resorted to hiking its product prices and shrinking its products across its portfolio. Theatres have also raised their prices for movie tickets and food &amp; beverages (F&amp;B) by 5 to 20% in different parts of the country. However, audiences returning to the big screen, after being deprived of the theatrical experience for close to two years, seem to be indifferent to the price increase. “The rise in the prices of movie tickets and F&amp;B in line to cover inflation seems to be reasonable. Average ticket prices have risen by about 8 to 10% and over 15% in some states and cities. At the same time, the F&amp;B prices have increased between 5 to 10%. The pinch of price increase seems to be ignored by the patrons as both occupancy levels (irrespective of pricing) and the spending on F&amp;B increased during the period,” said consulting and advisory firm Deloitte India’s Partner, Chandrashekhar Mantha. He calls the steady recovery in this quarter a result of ‘revenge consumption trend,’ wherein consumers are trying to catch up on everything they missed out on in the last two years. The movie industry’s strong content pipeline has also struck a chord with the audience, further pushing the recovery. Multiplex chain INOX hasn’t felt the inflation’s impact either. While it has increased its movie ticket and F&amp;B prices by 5-10% across its 675 screens, its sales and footfall continue to go up. “The increase is not on that level wherein consumers can feel the pinch in their pockets. It is between 5 to 10%. In fact, spends on F&amp;B and the ticket sales that we're seeing is more than the pre-pandemic level,” Jyala told Business Insider India. On the other hand, Ormax Media’s Jain said that small budget films are feeling the impact of inflation and movie-goers are choosing to watch only big-ticket movies that seem to be worth their money. “Audiences are choosing to watch films that offer a theatrical big screen experience such as RRR or KGF Chapter 2 or spectacle films like Doctor Strange or Spider-Man or a collective experience Bhool Bhulaiya 2 or Saunkan Saunkne. Films that did not offer this, failed to get the audiences – for example Jayeshbhai Jordaar or Jersey," said Jain. "Apart from the ticket prices, since the audiences are aware of the eventual OTT premieres now and are exposed to OTT viewing, any film that does not fit the above criteria has failed to get a decent opening weekend as well,” he said. However, it is too soon to tell. Bollywood movies such as Jayeshbhai Jordaar or Jersey also failed to rake in numbers because they didn’t leave a good impression on critics. Regional movies jump ahead Regional movies like KGF 2.0, RRR and Pushpa have been reporting recording-breaking revenue collections at the box office, surpassing Hindi movies like Jayeshbhai Jordaar, and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 so far. KGF 2.0 breached ₹800 crore revenue market in terms of net box office collection, which was slightly higher than RRR at ₹720 crore, revealed analytics and financial firm Elara Capital. The small to medium budget films in regional markets have reported a net box office collection of ₹50-55 crore each. On the other hand, recently released Hindi films have not been able to breach the ₹25-30 crore mark, which is a 50% less target than regional. “Relaxation of Average Ticket Price (ATP) cap in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana markets is one of the reasons for regional content reporting higher Box Office collections. The next big regional film release slated for June 3 – Vikram, may collect ₹150-175 crore net in terms of lifetime box office collection,” said Karan Taurani, Senior VP - Research Analyst, Elara Capital. A bright year ahead The rest of the year will see some major releases such as Akshay Kumar’s Prithiviraj, Aamir khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha, Varun Dhawan’s Jug Jug Jiyo, Ayushman Khurana’s Doctor G and Anek. From the regional markets, Virata Parvam of Rana Dugabatti, Rocketry: The Nambi Effect of R. Madhavan, Agent of Mamotty, Ravansura of Ravi Teja, the star-studded Vikram, are lined up for the second half of 2022. The Hollywood releases will further strengthen this pipeline. So, the year ahead looks bright for the movie exhibition industry. Analysts and movie exhibitors are confident about seeing a continued growth momentum in the next half.

Gangubai Kathiawadi tops technical awards at 23rd IIFA's music-loaded opening

As per the report, <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword> has 122 million theatre goers at present, i.e, those who watched at least one film in a theatre in the last 12 months. The corresponding number was 146 million in the January March 2020 period, right before the onset of the pandemic. The research was conducted in January 2023 among 15,000 Indian audiences across urban and rural India. An average Indian movie-goer watches films in 1.5 languages in a theatre in a year, according to Ormax Media. Hindi is the most-watched language, with an audience size of 58 million. However, the Hindi theatre-going universe shrunk by 21.5% vis-à-vis pre-pandemic, Ormax says. “We believe the footfall dip is even sharper (FY23) in 25-30% range versus pre-Covid level, due to content not clicking consistently and only selective large budget/sci fi films doing well. Our initial analysis indicates that Q1FY24 will be a strong quarter and should report strong double-digit YoY growth on a reasonable basis. Indian film industry lost 24 million moviegoers to the pandemic: Ormax

If we take Box Office reports as the yardstick of success, Dutt’s advice is on point. At present, more than rom-com (which Bollywood has exploited to the point of saturation), socially-relevant topics, biopics, patriotism and action resonate with the masses. From the macho cops of Dabangg, Singham, etc. to the elaborate fight sequences of RRR to one-man-army fights in KGF or Pushpa – originally popularised in the 80s by the ‘angry young man’ Amitabh Bachchan – action clearly sells. Even the original king of romance, Shah Rukh Khan has taken to action movies now! Case in point – his latest film Pathaan, which broke multiple Box Office records. In fact, as revealed in the Netflix documentary series The Romantics, Khan was reluctant to play a romantic hero in the first place. But Kapoor appears to still be chasing rom-coms. Here was a star kid who benefited from nepotism but certainly deserved to be in front of the camera — a claim that was proven absolutely true with a career-defining performance in Raajneeti (2010). In a film starring industry veterans like Nana Patekar, Kapoor held his own — letting his eyes speak volumes, searing himself in your memory. “The key performance comes from Ranbir Kapoor (the son of Bollywood star Rishi Kapoor) as Samar Pratap…The slim, bespectacled Kapoor displays ruthless intensity in his role, and his performance is a highlight of the film,” <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-reviews/raajneeti-film-review-29704/">stated</a> The Hollywood Reporter in its review. While his career started with novel experiments, it swayed into a genre once dominated by his father Rishi Kapoor — romance. Kapoor enjoyed a slew of critical and commercial hits in the genre — Rockstar in 2011, Barfi! in 2012, and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD) in 2013 that placed him well ahead of the curve from his contemporaries like Imran Khan. But most, if not all his romantic avatars appeared to be drawn from the same template — the lost, young man. And Ae Dil Hai Mushkil would have benefitted more from releasing as a music album, than a film. During this time, Kapoor’s real-life romances–actual and rumoured—caught more attention from the media than his movies. As he quipped during an appearance on the chat show Koffee With Karan, Ibiza should pay him for promoting tourism. He was referring to being secretly photographed by the paparazzi with his then-girlfriend, actor Katrina Kaif, on a beach. Success ultimately came with Sanju in 2018. Kapoor played the titular character in the biopic on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt, directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Even though the whitewashed storyline let down the film, Kapoor’s performance and transformation were the talk of the town. While Indian film critic Saibal Chatterjee remarked that Kapoor “dazzled as Sanjay Dutt”, The Guardian stated, “Kapoor proves (to be) a lightweight film’s strongest suit”. Unfortunately, the hype created by Sanju well and truly died by the time Kapoor returned to the silver screen — four years later in 2022, with Brahamastra and Shamshera. Though the former raked in the collections, Kapoor’s innate magic seemed to be missing. The latter was better performed, but the muddled, slow-paced storytelling didn’t sit well with the audience. None could alter his image of a romantic hero. Perhaps Kapoor wasn’t meant for action, as advised by Dutt. Certainly, the few earlier glimpses that he provided with Besharam (2013) and Bombay Velvet (2015) left the audiences and critics unimpressed. For his upcoming films now, the actor has joined hands with directors known for delivering commercial hits —Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar by Luv Ranjan and Animal by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. The former belongs to the genre that has failed Kapoor in the recent past, and the latter is an action drama, where Kapoor is yet to deliver a hit. Only time will tell if this approach will give a much-needed boost to the 40-year-old star kid’s career, or drag him into the list of ‘has-beens’. In an industry where action sells, Ranbir Kapoor continues to chase romance on-screen

<ul><li>From Ranveer Singh’s Jayeshbhai Jordaar to Ranbir Kapoor’s Shamshera, recent Bollywood movies have been bombing at the box office.</li><li>Bollywood producers currently pay a fixed income and around a 55-60% cut of profits to big actors such as Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, etc.</li><li>Apart from theatrical collection, a big chunk of Bollywood’s revenue also comes from digital streaming rights and satellite before the movie is released, which is being recast.</li><li>Business Insider India speaks to analysts to find out if consecutive film flops will affect the revenue model and the acquisition of movies by streaming platforms.</li></ul>Bollywood’s recent big-budget releases like Lal Singh Chaddha, Shamshera, Prithviraj Chauhan and Ek Villain Returns have disappointed the audience, but the industry has always had its table profits to fall back on. Table profits refers to the large chunk of revenue that Bollywood makes from the sale of digital streaming, satellite broadcast rights and merchandise before the movie is even released in the theatres. However, after consecutive flops, Bollywood’s movies might lose their lustre with bidders, hurting table profits. Experts believe that streaming platforms and TV channels might get choosy with the movies they acquire and cut back on spending hefty monies. Sharing how the approach might change, Gautam Jain, partner at Ormax Media said, “There would be stronger linkages with box office performance now. Even the smaller films which don't feature big stars or directors, who are trying to look for the direct-to-streaming route, are being asked to go the theatrical route and then come back to streaming.” Elara Capital’s senior VP - research analyst, Karan Taurani told Business Insider India that currently around 90-95% of Bollywood movies are pre-sold with a few clauses. “If the collection number surpasses a certain threshold, producers will be paid more. If it goes down below a certain threshold, OTT platforms will pay less to producers.” After a string of big budget flops, producers might have to prove themselves at the box office first. “The OTT platforms are paying hefty money for these films. Now, with content not doing well, they will become stringent in terms of the budgets that they invest in. They will have to become selective and approach in some other way,” Taurani told Business Insider India. Are big Bollywood stars losing their shine? A Bollywood movie with established stars could be counted on to be a sure-fire hit at the box office. Not any more. Films with the likes of Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan seem to be losing their attraction, pushing producers to reconsider their fee structure. The recent releases headlined by big names have disappointed the critics and the audience to such an extent that even the production costs couldn’t be recovered. “Every recent film has seen a loss of anywhere close to 40-50% of their cost of production, not being able to recover (the costs) because theatricals have been a blowback,” Taurani said. Despite losses at the box office, big stars take home 55-60% of profits and a fixed income, analysts say. “Higher talent fees are going to stay for some time. But yes, not many studios will be willing, or producers will be willing to go ahead with those high fees now, given the fate of the last few films at the box office,” Jain told Business Insider India. This is likely to push the industry toward greater adoption of a revenue-linked model of payment for actors, Taurani said. “Already most of the actors have a fixed fee plus a revenue share, I think the fixed fee component might come down, wherein they will want to go for more web-share models.” However, renowned actors haven’t lost all the lustre as evidenced by the hefty ancillary revenues their movies have been drawing from streaming platforms and satellite channels. To illustrate, the Aamir Khan-starrer Lal Singh Chaddha, as per Elara Capital, was made in the range of ₹200-250 crore and has garnered only about ₹70-80 crore in theatres, but it is believed to be in the black after its table profits. “Perception [of big actor films] might be negative, but the kind of money their films draw on non-theatrical platforms is huge. Akshay Kumar, Salman Khan or Aamir Khan, most of these big actor films non-theatrically draw a huge amount of money. Aamir Khan's non-theatrical movie is already a plus film, they already have that kind of money on the table,” film critic Bharti Dubey said. However, with poor box office collections, Dubey said that correction is bound to happen. “Whether it is production, whether it is actors, correction is the need of the hour,” Dubey told Business a beat Earlier, Bollywood songs were also a huge attraction for music streaming platforms. Now, they are falling flat too, further affecting the industry’s annual revenue collection. “Music is one section that has taken a beating in the last few years because music has not been doing well. People are not paying attention to music. It used to be a huge chunk of revenue earlier, which is not there at the moment and that needs to be revived,” said Dubey. Analysts believe the tables could still turn for Bollywood. The industry has pinned its hopes on forthcoming releases like Brahmastra, Circus, Ram Sethu and Thank God to work a turnaround but a recovery looked difficult, said Jain. Dubey believes that 2023 would be the year of recovery for Bollywood.

PVR has said that over one lakh tickets have been pre-booked for the coming weekend. “Finally, some relief for the industry. received #Brahmāstra *day-wise data* (advance booking) of a leading multiplex chain. Observations say that tickets sold are at 11,558 which is a very positive start, since advance opened at select locations only,” <a href="https://twitter.com/taran_adarsh/status/1565973786368675841?t=OJ1okV-x7JlFgPVi5qq65g&amp;s=19">tweeted business analyst </a>Taran Adarsh. On the basis of strong advance bookings, Elara Capital expects a strong opening with earnings of ₹20-22 crore over the weekend. “The lifetime box office (collection) for the film is estimated to be in a wide range of ₹130-200 crore, basis the strong advances,” says a media note by the brokerage firm. However, the science fiction movie as it’s being called, has been made over a massive budget of ₹410 crore and even if the upper end is breached it will earn only half of what was spent on its making. The movie is bankrolled by Karan Johar owned Dharma Productions along with Starlight Pictures, Prime Focus and Star Studios. The movie stars Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt and is the first of the franchise of three movies. “Brahmastra is the first sci-fi based Hindi franchise, and augurs well, as audiences want to watch large scale content in cinemas with visual effects. The film has seen strong acceptance/advances in the premium format screens (Imax, 3D etc), given the nature of content,” said Karan Taurani of Elara Capital. Word-of-mouth publicity But even for the movie to earn ₹200 crore, it would need a lot of good reviews that would bring the audience to the theatres. “We believe a positive word of mouth and audience acceptance can help the film breach the upper end. It will be tough to provide any concrete estimates unless we get to know reviews, as most recent estimates have been revised downwards post reviews. Hope it’s the other way round (positive side) for Brahmāstra as it’s a very large franchise movie and Hindi Box Office desperately needs a hit movie,” says Taurani. However, if the movie turns out to be a hit, it could rake in the moolah for theatre owners who have been hurt by the dismal performance of the much-hyped recent film releases – <keyword id="4632769" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Liger" source="Orion">Liger</keyword> and <keyword id="14924108" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Lal-Singh-Chaddha-" source="Orion">Lal Singh Chaddha.</keyword> “A film like Brahmāstra can provide support (to) ticket prices and spend-per-head growth too, as the film is available in multiple premium formats – average ticket price and spend per head have been 15-25% higher than pre-Covid levels until last quarter for multiplex chains,” said Taurani. The movie will be released in 3D, IMAX 3D and 4DX 3D formats across theatres, this Friday. Moreover, since it’s dubbed in multiple languages, it can bring in 15-20% of the business from regional markets too.
