He's also the founder of <a href="https://xmondohair.com/">XMONDO Hair</a>, which he launched in 2019. We spoke with Mondo as part of <a href="https://www.insider.com/category/beauty-files">Insider's "Beauty Files" series</a>, which takes readers beyond the <keyword id="6354629" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="beauty">beauty</keyword> world they see online. Here's what he had to say about growing up in his dad's salon, his favorite products, and the future of his hair-care line.This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.<div type="image" title="brad_mondo_interview" height="1126" width="1502" msid="77774341" hostid="261"></div><h2>Brad Mondo learned about hair at his dad's salon</h2>Amanda Krause: How did your hair journey begin?Brad Mondo: My dad was a <keyword id="25233" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="hairstylist">hairstylist</keyword>, so that's where it all came from. I grew up in the salon that my dad owned, and I would play around with the mannequin heads all day every day. That's still what I do to this day, so it's very funny. I'd also look through the old '90s hairstyling books, check out all the styles, and try to replicate them. Krause: Since that was such a big part of your life growing up, did you ever stray from working with hair?Mondo: The only other job I've had outside the hair industry was at Calvin Klein. I was a sales associate there when I was 16 for a few months. Then I decided: "I'm gonna go back to the salon — that's where I belong."I was a very rebellious teenager, and anything my parents wanted me to do — aka hair — I didn't want to do, so that's why I got that job.Krause: Looking back at those years, are there any hairstyles or colors you regret wearing?Mondo: So many. I had botched hair all the time. I would ask my dad to give me these very complicated, crazy colors. Ombré at the time wasn't as known as it is now, and I would ask for that stuff in 2010 or 2012. I would teach him in the mirror how to do it, and it just came out so terribly bad.I also had my hair really dark at one point — I had black hair — and that just does not go with my skin tone.<h2>The YouTuber says a good shampoo, oil, and heat protectant are essential</h2>Krause: Can you share some of your go-to products that you swear by for everyday hair care?Mondo: A good shampoo is very essential — something that matches your hair type. Another great thing to have in your hair toolbox is oil, because most people have dry ends. Also a great heat protectant if you're styling. I love my own product line. It's really the only thing I use at this point. Krause: Do you think people can get quality results from drugstore hair products, or do you recommend that they invest in high-end brands if possible?Mondo: I don't have a ton of experience with drugstore products because I grew up in a salon and have always been around professional products. But I'm such a label geek — I read everything and know all the ingredients.I've noticed with drugstore brands, a lot of them tend to use chemicals in place of natural ingredients because you can't get huge quantities of them — they have to be shipped over, and it's a lot of work. Brands add in a lot of perfumes to mask how chemically based the products are.I've used brands like Shea Moisture, and I think they have good ingredients for a good price. But I'd probably stay away from things that are like $2 or $3 because there's a reason why they're that price.<h2>Mondo predicts that mullets will come back into style</h2>Krause: Many of your YouTube and TikTok videos show you <a href="https://youtu.be/_RKoWhg6nnY">react to people as they cut, color, and style their hair</a>. What do you think of hair trends that have emerged throughout the pandemic, and what do you think will be popular in the near future?Mondo: I think there's a lot of fun things going on, and a lot of people are taking chances with their hair more than usual. We're seeing a lot of mullets, and that's going to be a huge trend. Also people having their natural color with a pop, like adding very bright strands within your hair like a peek-a-boo moment, or in the front like an E-girl.Krause: When you're not starring in YouTube videos, you run XMONDO Hair. What has the past year as a brand owner been like, and what's next?Mondo: Overall, really exciting and a lot of work. Quarantine definitely boosted sales because people are doing hair themselves now, and it's been really awesome. I'm lucky in that way.It's also been difficult. I didn't expect it to be as much work as it ended up being, but I've been having so much fun. It's so cool to imagine a product and create it from scratch.We have so much coming up — shampoos and conditioners, and maybe some color in the future.Krause: You change your hairstyles and color a lot. Where do you find inspiration for your different looks?Mondo: Instagram keeps me most inspired. I just follow really cool people who experiment a lot with their style, and then I'm like, "I wanna be like that today." Then I just cut my hair, color it, and don't think about it. Sometimes that backfires, but usually it's good. Also just going outside in New York City, where I live, I find so much style inspiration.Krause: Can you share any advice with people who want to make drastic hair changes?Mondo: Think it over for a night or two, or a week. As long as you take time to sleep on it and you still wanna do it, just go for it. Your hair grows back, and you can get it fixed if you need to. Just be careful with the bleach because sometimes that causes irreversible damage and we don't want that. Caroline Aghajanian: Ah! I know, I cut a lot there. Brad: Let it go, let it go. Wait, stop, let it go.Brad: Hi! Caroline: Hello, hi! Brad: How are you? Caroline: I'm doing well, how are you? Brad: Great. Caroline: Thank you so much for coming on here and teaching me how to cut my bangs. Brad: Yes, thank you for having me, I'm excited. Caroline: Yeah, I am so nervous. I feel like I'm gonna mess this up. I've seen people recently on, like, TikTok, like, doing this thing and cutting it. Like, no. Brad: Yeah, I wouldn't. I've been seeing that too, and I'm like, mm, it's a cute idea, but it never really works out in the way you want it to. [laughs] Caroline: Yeah, yeah. Where do you usually work out of? And just tell us a little bit about yourself. Brad: Sure. I've lived in New York City the past five years, six years almost. I've worked in several very high-end salons around the city and worked on my own private clients, and now I'm a YouTuber, I have my own hair-care company. So I have quite a lot going on, and it's really exciting. Caroline: Yes, XMondo hair, I love it. I just wanna show you where my hair is right now. It is, like, medium length. My bangs, the last time I cut them, it was probably, like, December? So, I mean, my hair is like this now. Like that. Brad: They're long. [laughs] Caroline: They've gotten long.Caroline: So, I have a few brushes with me, and I have a few scissors. Do you have a preference? Brad: We don't need, really, the teasing brush, but the comb in the middle, the black one, is probably perfect. We don't need the other one either. Just the black one's fine. Caroline: OK. And then my scissors. I have these giant ones from the kitchen. [laughs] I also brought this one from the kitchen too. Brad: Those are, like, the widest scissors possible. Caroline: It's pretty wide. And then, I mean, I have these like, kind of... Brad: Oh, OK. Those look better. Caroline: OK. Brad: Typically I would say, try to find a pair of, you know, cutting scissors to work with. I mean, they are made a lot different than, you know, office scissors. But, you know, people might not have that at home, so I totally understand. These are proper hairdressing scissors. Caroline: OK. Brad: So, they are quite skinny and very sharp. They cut through the hair so nicely, and they leave the edges very blunt, without, like, shredding them at all. You can get a little bit of, like, shredding going on, when you have to, like, continuously cut the same piece over and over again in order to get it cut. But in this situation it's not, like, the biggest deal in the world. It would just make it easier for you.Caroline: What is, like, the biggest mistake you see people make when they're cutting bangs or generally cutting their hair at home? Brad: Definitely going too short too fast. Normally in the salon, we'd probably cut on wet hair. But when you're doing it on yourself, you really wanna make sure that you're cutting the right length right from the start. And when hair is wet, it's a lot longer than when it's dry and styled. So you want to see it exactly how you're gonna wear it and then cut from there. Another thing I see a lot is people just go straight across, and we don't wanna do that. Like, we definitely wanna do point cutting, which is when you go upwards instead of horizontally. It's kind of, like, upwards with a little bit of slant. Caroline: Like that, kinda. Brad: Yeah. That'll give you less of a blunt edge. It'll be like a safety for you, just in case, like, you cut too short, you can always kind of, like, feather it down a little bit.Caroline: My bangs currently are here. Brad: So, I'd like to definitely part the hair where you're gonna normally part it. And if people say that they don't normally have a part, then we would do the middle. Just comb it back for me. Caroline: Oh, yes. Brad: And kind of see where it falls. Caroline: OK. Brad: Yeah, I think we should work on that part that's right there. You're seeing that? Do you mind if I get a mannequin and, like, show you what to do? Caroline: I don't mind. That would help. Brad: OK. Caroline: Yes. Brad: Here's my client. [laughs] On one side, we are taking just that little triangle out. I'll show you this section. So, like, it's kind of like a slant down. Caroline: Oh, now I see what you mean. Brad: And then we're gonna match it again on the other side. So that you're getting this kind of larger triangle. Caroline: It goes... that? [Brad laughs] Close. Caroline: It's bad. Brad: Let's try that side again. Yeah, perfect, now go all the way down and then part that out. Perfect. OK, now put that behind your ear. And then why don't you just pull a tight ponytail back with that hair you have. I think sectioning is pretty hard. It's not flawless, but it really isn't gonna make a huge difference. Caroline: OK. Brad: I find that a lot of people don't know how to use a comb properly. Yeah. I mean, it's normal, people don't know how to, like, lay a comb down on the head and get a section clean. I've noticed that through, like, teaching my brother how to do stuff and, like, teaching just normal people how to cut hair. Nobody knows how to use a comb because people don't really use combs that often at home.Brad: We're gonna take out just a small section from that whole section you have, just in the middle. So, like, it doesn't need to be perfect, just, like, a smaller bit down the center. Caroline: Like this? Brad: Maybe just a little bit smaller than that. All right, so this is gonna be our sort of guide, right? So let's get this one right. [laughs] Caroline: All right. I got it. Brad: OK, so we're gonna start off cutting. We're gonna cut it very long first. So, you don't actually have to hold it. So I would just let it do its thing. So, you're head's gonna move a little bit forward, and you're gonna start right on the side, just taking a little bit out at a time. Right around, like, let's just start off at your eye level. Yeah. Caroline: But not... Brad: So, don't go straight across, though. Pull the scissors a little bit more... yeah, perfect. Caroline: Like this? Brad: Not horizontally, just a little bit off. Caroline: Here they go! Brad: Yeah, perfect. You're doing so good! Let's go a little bit shorter now that we have the technique down. Let's take off just a little bit more. We can work our way up. Yeah, you don't have to hold the hair. Just keep cutting into it. This way the hair is laying exactly where you're gonna wear it. If we hold it with our hand, it's gonna end up bouncing up a little bit. So we don't want that to happen, so we're just gonna cut it in its natural position. Caroline: Interesting. And you wouldn't recommend, like, holding it in the brush either? Brad: Oh, you totally could, if you feel comfortable with that. Caroline: I might. Ah! I know, I cut a lot there. Brad: Let it go, let it go. Wait, stop. Let it go. OK, that looks like a good length, right? Caroline: Yeah, yeah. Brad: That you just cut, so let's not go any shorter than that. So, just follow that piece across with the rest of the hair. You got this, girl. You're killing it. Caroline: Thank you! Brad: The other thing you can try, maybe it'll feel more natural for you to take the hair in your fingers like this. It's like you're making a scissor with your finger. Yeah. Caroline: Oh, like this. Ohh. Brad: Just don't pull on it too much, just, yeah. And you can move your fingers up a bit further, that way you can see more. Caroline: There, like that? Brad: Yeah, perfect, yes. These look great so far. Caroline: Yay! Brad: All right, well, we can move on to the next step, and we can just take a little more hair out from those sections on each side. Like, maybe half of that. Caroline: Oh. Like... Brad: A little bit more. So, you see that line you made with the bang in the front? Caroline: Yes. Brad: Comb everything down. Perfect, OK. Now you're gonna slightly go down with your cutting. So, you're gonna follow that line you already made and kind of round it out a little bit. Caroline: Can I hold, or no? Brad: I would just let it fall naturally. Just don't cut your eyelash. [laughs] Caroline: Yeah, I know. Brad: So you can actually on this side start from the longer side and go up, and you can meet it. Caroline: Oh, no, not the brush. Oh. I'm so sorry. I... Brad: It's OK. No, you're fine, you're fine. OK, let me see it. All right, yeah, just that longer piece needs to go, and then I think we can connect that. Be careful around your eyes. It's making me really nervous. Caroline: Oh, sorry. Brad: OK, and now we're gonna do the same thing on the other side. Brad: So, follow that line you already made. Yeah, start on the inside. Right there. That looks good. OK, stop there. All right, let me see forward. That actually looks good. I mean, we're just missing another piece on the other side. I think we took a bigger section on the other side, so it's fine. Take off that little side, yeah. Caroline: Cool. Brad: OK, now let's brush the rest of the bangs forward, get that section we didn't finish yet on each side. And what we're gonna do is just comb it down on one side. Caroline: Comb one side down. Brad: So, where we finished that last section, just slowly chomp at that hair a little bit and just give it a little bit of roundness, like what we've been doing, but just don't, you don't have to take a lot off. Perfect. Beautiful! And let's work on the other side, and you can do the same thing if you feel comfortable with that. That looks good. Now just connect the bottom a little bit more. Good, I think that's really good.Brad: So now let's get into styling them, so we can see how they're really laying down. All right, so do you have anything to wet your hair with, or, like, kinda wet your comb and maybe wet your bangs a little bit? Caroline: Yeah, I have some water here. Brad: Perfect, yeah, let's just, you can, like, dip the comb in if you are OK with that, and like... Caroline: Audience, I'm not gonna drink out of this after I do this. There we go. [laughs] Brad: Perfect. And just get right at the root with that water. And now let's grab the round brush and a blow-dryer. Do you have a blow-dryer? Caroline: I do. Brad: And let's just do a simple round-brush blow-dry on the bangs. Caroline: Sometimes my hair dryer has, like... it's janky as well. OK, just, like, roll it down and brush? OK. Brad: Let down the rest of your hair for me. Caroline: Ooh! [laughs] Well, that was supposed to be glamorous. [laughing] Brad: And then give everything a brush, and then see that long piece at the ends? Caroline: Yes. Brad: Can you cut that off? Caroline: Like this, off entirely? Brad: Yeah, just cut it off. OK, perfect. OK, now let that go. Perfect. Caroline: You caught that from 3,000 miles away on a virtual webcam, and I couldn't see it with, like, four cameras set up in front of me. Brad: It looks so good, I'm so happy. Caroline: Thank you, I love it. I absolutely love it. I like that they're long. I'm pretty sure a week later I'm gonna probably have to go in and, like, shorten them, but for now, I like how it's just, like, subtle. It's fun, and it's, like, framing my face. Brad: And for your first time, I don't think we should try and go any shorter, just in case, like, things go wrong. And then the better you get at this, you can definitely go shorter and shorter if you feel comfortable, but I think this is a great place to start for you. It looks fabulous. I guess I just wanna hear from you, like, what do you recommend people do right now to support hairstylists and brands and just anything that people can do to support you guys? Brad: You can work with them virtually, you know, people can teach you how to do hair through webcam, like I am. Especially supporting, like, indie brands is really important right now. <ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12027462" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="brad-pitt" source="Orion">Brad Pitt</keyword> filed a new lawsuit against ex-wife <keyword id="12027461" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="angelina-jolie" source="Orion">Angelina Jolie</keyword> over the sale of her stake in their co-owned <keyword id="12128065" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="vineyard" source="Orion">vineyard</keyword>.</li><li>Last October, Jolie purportedly sold her stake to Russian oligarch Yuri Shefler, who owns vodka brand Stoli.</li></ul>Brad Pitt accused his ex-wife Angelina Jolie of seeking to "inflict harm" after she sold her stake in their couple's French vineyard to a Russian oligarch, according to a new lawsuit.Last week, Pitt filed an amended complaint against his ex-wife, following his initial February lawsuit over selling her stake in their co-owned vineyard, Château Miraval, to a subsidiary of the vodka brand Stoli, owned by Russian oligarch Yuri Shefler, without her ex-husband's knowledge.In the follow-up lawsuit filed in Los Angeles on June 3, 2022, Pitt echoed his previous claims from the February complaint, claiming Jolie "pursued and then consummated the purported sale in secret, purposely keeping Pitt in the dark, and knowingly violating Pitt's contractual rights."By making the purported sale of her stake to Tenute del Mondo, a subsidiary of Stoli controlled by Shefler, last October, the lawsuit accused Jolie of seeking "to seize profits she had not earned and returns on an investment she did not make" and "to inflict harm on Pitt," according to the 54-page lawsuit obtained by Insider."Jolie knew and intended that Shefler and his affiliates would try to control the business Pitt had built and to undermine Pitt's investment in Miraval," the lawsuit continued. "And just as Jolie envisioned, that is exactly what Shefler has done."Pitt went on to invoke <keyword id="11894337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="russia" source="Orion">Russia</keyword>'s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, saying that Shefler's "relationships and reputation" as a Russian-born billionaire founder of the vodka brand Stoli could pose a commercial risk to Miraval."Since Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Miraval's insurer has sought assurances that Shefler is not aligned with Putin and that affiliation with Stoli would not create commercial risk," the lawsuit said. "That inquiry is no surprise; in the wake of Russia's invasion, discarding bottles of Stolichnaya vodka, Stoli's signature product, has come to signify solidarity with Ukraine, and boycotts of Stoli-affiliated products became widespread.""Long-term distributors of the wine business have expressed concern about Miraval's ties to Shefler and questioned their continued commitment to distribute Miraval rosé," according to the lawsuit. "And a newly launched sanctions-advocacy project, developed and sponsored by the Ukrainian government in response to Russia's aggression, has publicly called for sanctioning Shefler."In March, Shefler <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stolichnaya-vodka-changes-brand-name-stoli-russian-born-billionaire-founder-2022-3">rebranded</a> <a href="https://stoli-group.com/">Stoli vodka</a>, formerly known as Stolichnaya vodka, as a "direct response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine." Shefler also said he had been exiled from Russia since 2000 after Russian President Vladimir Putin attempted to "wrest control" of the vodka brand.Alongside Shefler's Russian ties, Pitt's lawsuit also mentions their vineyard's reputation being put in jeopardy due to the Russian tycoon's "notoriety," which he said was gained through "cutthroat business tactics and dubious professional associations.""In violation of the parties' agreement, Jolie has sought to force Pitt into partnership with a stranger, and worse yet, a stranger with poisonous associations and intentions," the lawsuit said.A representative for Pitt declined to comment. The counter-suit against Pitt comes after Pitt initially sued Jolie, alleging <a href="https://www.insider.com/brad-pitt-sues-angelina-jolie-selling-french-winery-miraval-2022-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">she illegally sold her shares of Chateau Miraval to Stoli.</a>Jolie's former investment company, Nouvel, is seeking a jury trial and compensatory damages of at least $250 million, according to the complaint filed Tuesday in Los Angeles and obtained by Insider.Nouvel is also asking a judge to order Miraval Provence, the name of the partnership between the Chateau and winemaker Familles Perrin, to transfer any of Chateau Miraval's trademarks to the Chateau, among other damages, the complaint says.Lawyers for Nouvel allege in court documents that Pitt secretly transferred assets of the wine company in retaliation amid his and Jolie's divorce."In retaliation for the divorce and custody proceedings, Pitt embarked on a multifaceted, years-long campaign to seize control of Chateau Miraval and appropriate the company's assets for his benefit and that of his own companies and friends," lawyers for the investment firm said in court documents.The suit accuses Pitt and all other codefendants of "encouraging" Mondo Bongo, a California-based limited liability company, to impose a shareholder deadlock on Quimicum, a company that has shared ownership over Chateau Miraval, preventing it from functioning properly, according to court documents."They did so intentionally and in bad faith with the express purpose of disrupting the normal performance of the Quimicum Articles so that Quimicum could not stop their plan to harm its subsidiary, Chateau Miraval, by wasting its funds and stripping assets from it," the complaint says.The complaint alleges that Pitt conspired with Familles Perrin to "misappropriate the immense value of Chateau Miraval's trademarks" and then gave conflicting explanations for the deals.According to the complaint, Miraval Provence is not contractually obligated to register Chateau Miraval's trademarks as its own. <ul class="summary-list"><li>The TikTok-famous "butterfly haircut" has taken over the app as users attempt the DIY hack.</li><li>It's supposed to give dramatic layers with a simple technique that takes minutes to execute.</li></ul>Adventurous TikTokers are foregoing the salon and cutting their own hair using the "butterfly" technique, a viral hack that involves sectioning the hair into two ponytails and chopping the desired length off. The cut gained popularity after hairstylist Brad Mondo, who has over 9 million followers on the platform, posted a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRg6L1Vp/">tutorial</a> of the technique in October of 2022. It has since blown up — the original video garnered over 20 million views, and the #butterflycut and #butterflyhaircut hashtags on TikTok have 248.1 million views and 245 million views respectively. The trick promises to leave the hair with well-placed layers, despite only taking a few minutes to achieve. Users part their hair horizontally in a straight line from behind one ear to behind the other, and the bottom section of hair is gathered in a high pony at the top of the head, while the top section is tied into a ponytail in the center of the forehead.Because of how the ponytails are positioned, when it's cut the hair should fall in dramatic layers. Paul Watts, a hairdresser and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/@PaulWattsHair">YouTuber with 100,000 subscribers</a>, said the cut is reminiscent of "the Rachel," a style inspired by Jennifer Aniston's character in "Friends" that gained popularity in the 1990s. "We've got that beautiful sort of symmetrical shape around her face, but being blow-dried back. We're creating that sort of wings effect," he told Insider.Users of all different skill levels are trying out the viral hack, from <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRg6Y21u/">professional hairdressers</a> to <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRgjXFme/">at-home amateurs</a>. Many of the butterfly technique videos appear to end successfully, <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTRgaUjoo/">leaving users with the desired result</a>. However, there are a fair share of <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@yumcastrillo/video/7184316976649506054?_t=8Ywxlvor22F&amp;_r=1">self-proclaimed failures</a>, which usually say their error was <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@camelfairy/video/7183044908754947333?_r=1&amp;_t=8Ywxfi5iIe2&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;item_id=7183044908754947333">cutting off more hair</a> than they'd planned to.Watts, who has been hairdressing for 15 years, told Insider that in theory the technique works in part because the ponytails are positioned in the center of the head.''When you've got it bang in the middle, you know you're going to get symmetry," Watts said. "It makes the sectioning as we would do in the salon seem very simple.'' However, Watts warned that there are a few caveats to the seemingly straightforward trend. He said that issue with overcutting could be down to users not fully understanding the concepts of "elevation" and "over-direction," which mean that when the hair is brought up and forward, cutting it straight across creates layers that are shorter at the top and longer at the bottom. According to Watts, a good understanding of how this works is what helps stylists know where the hair will fall after the cut and ensure length will be distributed correctly throughout. Watts also warned that if the ponytail isn't perfectly positioned, it could leave people with shorter hair at the back than at the front, which is not the intended result. Additionally, Watts said the technique is only "universal to a degree," meaning it most likely can't be executed exactly the same on all hair types. "If somebody's got really fine hair and they're looking at doing it, they're going to be losing a lot of length and a lot of fullness from their hair," Watts said. "If they've got loads of hair, it would be really sort of chunky and not sit how they expect it to." I would match eye shadow to my shirts, and I tried to figure it out for myself.From an early age, I always tried to have fun with it. I never got too wild with my looks, but it was something that I always enjoyed.Krause: Looking back at those years, do you regret the trends and experimental looks you wore?Conrad: Honestly I don't regret any of the trends, but I definitely regret some of my execution. I didn't really know what I was doing. I maintained my own eyebrows and didn't do a great job, and I didn't really know how to apply eye shadow, so I was kind of winging it.Fortunately, I think everybody was doing that at that age, so it's not that bad. It's fun to look back on.Krause: As your beauty routine has evolved over the years, have you learned any go-to makeup tricks?Conrad: I always try and do the least amount possible. If you're going to make a statement, pick one feature to focus on. If you want to do a really dramatic eye, maybe you'll pair that with a more neutral color on your lips. And if you're doing a simpler eye and lip, maybe you could do a pop of color on your cheeks.<h2>Conrad always knew she wanted to create a makeup line</h2>Krause: You released <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13623910-lauren-conrad-beauty">a book filled with makeup tips</a> in 2012. Did you know then that you wanted to create your own line?Conrad: I've always wanted to do it. It's so funny because back in 2012 while I was doing that book I was even looking into it. But I've always tried to properly educate myself on a category before getting into it, and also not take on too much at once. We obviously had challenges this year in production just because of COVID, but it was really fun and I loved creating it. Everybody's technique is different, everyone's skin is different, so it's been really interesting to get initial feedback and apply that to new products we're developing.Krause: How do you stay inspired and make Lauren Conrad Beauty stand apart from other brands?Conrad: There are so many options in the beauty category, there always has been, and it's a bit overwhelming. So I wanted to create a line for someone like me. I don't have time to do a 45-minute makeup routine. I have two small kids, a pretty hands-on job, and so I can't be too precious with my makeup.I was selfishly designing the line for myself, and I wanted products I felt good about that were made with clean formulas and are easy to apply.Krause: Are there any other areas of beauty you'd like to venture into?Conrad: I want this brand to be very well-rounded, and right now skin care and makeup are so closely connected. I'm looking at both. So we're gonna continue to grow. The trend "quickly became taboo" by the '90s, though, as people began to see mullets as representations of being dirty and having a low income, the publication reported.Now, however, the style seems to be everywhere. Miley Cyrus became one of the first modern stars to rock a mullet <a href="https://www.insider.com/miley-cyrus-mom-cuts-her-hair-2019-11">in November 2019</a>. Months later, the haircut saw another boost in popularity as a result of Netflix's "Tiger King" docuseries. Speaking to Insider, Richards said she's always cut mullets for clients, though she has noticed the style being requested "by a wider range of people" — including older clients and those working corporate jobs — this year."Celebrities like Miley Cyrus and Maisie Williams have such huge audiences who have probably never seen a mullet on a female before," Richards said. "They're showing them that it can be a super feminine cut, but strong and empowering at the same time.""The trend will never go," she added. Richards particularly loves that you can frame your face with "cute fringe and delicate sideburns," while still "maintaining length" and having the ability to wear an updo if you desire."I think mullets are super trendy because they're so versatile," McDaeth said. "For example, growing out a pixie haircut is a lot less awkward when using a mullet to transition from short to longer hair."McDaeth added that mullets are also popular because they typically require "super low maintenance" over time."A good cut should style itself, and will look good when worn messy in that 'rolled out of bed' look," she said. "But it should also look just as good styled and blown out."<h2>If you're interested in getting a mullet, make sure to show your hairstylist lots of pictures of the style you're seeking</h2>Before heading to the salon, Richards said you'll want to research stylists and find one who's experienced in creating mullets. From there, you'll want to share as many details as possible with the person cutting your hair regarding the look you want to achieve. "Bring all the pictures," Richards said. "The main question your stylist will have is to how extreme to go. There is a fine line between a shag and a mullet, so make sure you've got your Pinterest board ready."McDaeth notes that you should also let your hairstylist know about any patches that typically cause you trouble when styling your hair."If you know you have any serious cowlicks or growth patterns that give you trouble, communicate that to your stylist," she said.<div type="image" title="raisa flowers mullet" height="869" width="1159" msid="78590921" hostid="261"></div>Though mullets are popular amongst people with wavy and curly hair, McDaeth said the haircut can work on any hair type. Whereas some might be nervous about having shorter hair, others might be skeptical of embracing a popular trend. According to hairstylists, one of the best ways to combat these fears is to make your mullet your own."A stylist should be able to design a haircut that feels both on trend, and custom to you," McDaeth said. "If you're feeling worried about being too trendy, try changing up your color too."Above all, you should try to remember that it's the "little details" like fringe, sideburns, color, and more that make your mullet unique, according to Richards. And no matter how you style your mullet, both Richards and McDaeth agree that the hairstyle is fun to have in and of itself. "Be warned," Richards said.
