"He get the fame, he get the wealth but people are struggling, who did you help?"</p><p>Another line reads: "I don't give a f---- how much money you have, what did you do with it, how did you use it to make an impact and influence the wealth for the better? Rapper T.I. released a track dissing Floyd Mayweather after the retired boxer was seen shopping at Gucci despite a backlash over its 'blackface' sweater

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>President Trump's modeling agency could be in trouble.</p><p>Three sources, including an anonymous fashion industry insider and two bookers who have previously worked with Trump Models, <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/04/trump-models-agency-potential-collapse-closure-sources">told Mother Jones</a> that they've heard the agency is on the brink of closing due to Trump's <keyword id="6358883" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Politics">politics</keyword>. Some current employees are looking for other work, while others have left to create their own agencies. </p><p>"Yeah, it's closing," booker Virginie Deren, who works with a Paris-based firm that co-represents many Trump models, told Mother Jones in a recent interview.</p><p>Another booker who previously worked with Trump Models and still works in the industry claims that current employees are getting in touch for employment opportunities. "They're all <span>pretty much sort of scrambling to get out," the source told Mother Jones. There are still, however, <a href="http://www.trumpmodels.com/">many models listed</a> on the agency's website, and it's not clear how many employees have left. </span></p><p><span>Trump opened the agency in 1999 - his first foray into the business side of fashion. </span></p><p><span>In February, <a href="http://www.refinery29.com/2017/02/140181/trump-models-boycott-calls-fashion-industry">Refinery29 reported</a> that various groups of people in the fashion industry, including casting directors, makeup artists, and hair stylists, were calling for a full boycott of Trump Models.</span></p><p>More recently, a former manager at Trump Models left the agency to create his own, calling it Anti Management. Several former Trump Models have already signed with the new agency. Anti Management's founder, Gabriel Ruas Santos-Rocha, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/arts-and-entertainment/wp/2017/04/03/trump-models-might-be-running-out-of-models/?utm_term=.6aeb8cd6d09c">told The Washington Post</a> he wanted his models to be "<span>nurtured and treated fairly." He added:</span> "I did not start an agency with the intent of taking someone out of business. Outside of that I have no comments."</p><p>Trump Models has been under fire since 2016, when <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/08/donald-trump-model-management-illegal-immigration">Mother Jones reported</a> that the agency skirted immigration laws in bringing in young women who didn't have visas to work in the US.</p><p>Business Insider <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/former-trump-models-tell-their-story-2017-2">also interviewed</a> two former Trump models in February of this year. They spoke candidly about their experiences working with the agency, saying that they were told to lie about their professions to customs agents. Then I sat back and made them call out 'TRUMP MAGA DECAF CAP' 3 Times before I picked it up."</p><p>It is unclear if Blakeman seriously did this - he posted a similar story<a href="https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154740346017854&amp;set=ecnf.645057853&amp;type=3&amp;theater"> on Facebook in September</a> using an obviously photoshopped picture of a stock photo of a Starbucks cup. Either way, the response to Blakeman's post has been both earnest and supportive.&#xa0;</p><p>Sebastian Gorka, Trump's former deputy assistant, posted a screenshot of a photo of Blakeman's post. "I LOVE this,"<a href="https://twitter.com/SebGorka/status/940425053434499073"> the caption reads.</a> "Take the Culture BACK!!"</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Many comments on Blakeman's post and Gorka's tweet have been similarly supportive, with some people pledging to <a href="https://twitter.com/KatTheHammer1/status/940425817603031040">do the same</a> at their local Starbucks.&#xa0;</p><p>Starbucks has become a<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/boycott-most-polarizing-foods-in-trump-era-2017-11/#over-the-last-two-years-a-new-right-wing-social-media-movement-has-risen-in-prominence-and-that-means-new-boycott-threats-1"> magnet for protests from the right,</a> due to the company's progressive policies on issues such as immigration and gay rights.&#xa0;In February, some customers threatened to boycott the coffee giant after the company spoke out against the executive order barring immigrants from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US.</p><p>Last November, alt-right personality Baked Alaska <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-trump-cup-protest-2016-11">challenged Trump supporters to complete a similar stunt.&#xa0;</a></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>"We have a culture war to win," Baked Alaska&#xa0;said in a&#xa0;Periscope video,&#xa0;in which&#xa0;he complained about&#xa0;alt-right Twitter suspensions&#xa0;and accused liberals of making white people and men feel guilty. "If someone is getting so triggered, they can't write Trump on a coffee cup at Starbucks and they're crying liberal tears and they're calling the cops, that's insane."</p><p>According to Baked Alaska, the purpose of asking baristas to write "Trump" on cups is to "trigger SJW" employees (SJW is an abbreviation for social justice warrior, a derogatory term for feminists and progressives). He says that asking to write Trump on the cups is a way to&#xa0;normalize Trump and the alt-right.&#xa0;</p><p>At the time,&#xa0;Starbucks told Business Insider that the coffee chain does not require employees to write or call out names provided by customers.&#xa0;</p><p>"Over the years, writing customer names on cups and calling out their names has been a fun ritual in our stores," the coffee giant said in a statement. "Rarely has it been abused or taken advantage of. Elton John fires back on Instagram after Dolce & Gabbana declare gay families are not real families

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Seattle restaurant Jade Garden has been vandalized twice since March, and the owner believes that both incidents were racially motivated.</li><li>Jade Garden was one of 21 Chinatown restaurants damaged during recent <keyword id="6354896" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="protests">protests</keyword> over the death of George Floyd, and owner Eric Chan believes his restaurant was targeted because of online rumors that he sent a racist message on Instagram.</li><li>Chan says that the image of the racist message circulating on social media is fake, and that he's been the target of a racist troll bent on destroying his reputation and his business.</li><li>Chan's story highlight the complicated relationship between many Black and Asian Americans. "Asian Americans are in this strange social position," said Ellen Wu, the director of the Asian Studies program at Indiana University. "We're not white. We're also very clearly not black, and we benefit from being not Black."</li></ul><p>Eric Chan keeps having to clean up broken glass. </p><p>Chan is the owner of Jade Garden, a Seattle dim sum restaurant that Business Insider first <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jade-garden-independent-restaurants-struggle-to-survive-pandemic-2020-4">profiled</a> in early April. When we first spoke to Chan, the restaurant had just been vandalized in what Chan believes to be a racially motivated crime. At the time, President Donald Trump had <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-doubles-down-on-calling-coronavirus-chinese-virus-2020-3">dubbed</a> the coronavirus "the Chinese virus," and anti-Asian hate crimes had been <a href="https://www.adl.org/blog/reports-of-anti-asian-assaults-harassment-and-hate-crimes-rise-as-coronavirus-spreads">on the rise</a>. Sales in Seattle's Chinatown or International District, where Jade Garden is located, plunged as early as February.</p><p>When we reached back out in June, Chan told us that Jade Garden had been broken into again on May 30, during protests over the death of George Floyd. This time, Chan suspects that those responsible targeted him not because he is Asian, but because they thought he was anti-Black.</p><p>It's not exactly clear where many Asian Americans fit into this moment of sweeping social change and anti-racist protests. For those who live or work in Chinatown neighborhoods, the property damage associated with the current protests is reminiscent of past wounds. In 1992 Los Angeles, riots over the acquittal of four police officers beating Rodney King resulted in the destruction of Koreatown, just a year after a Korean store owner shot and killed Latasha Harlins, a 15-year-old Black girl.</p><p>"Asian Americans are in this strange social position," said Ellen Wu, an associate professor of history and the director of the Asian Studies program at Indiana University. "We're not white. We're also very clearly not Black, and we benefit from being not Black. We don't have to live in the kind of perpetual fear of violence that Black people do."</p><p>The reason Jade Garden was looted again, Chan believes, has something to do with those wounds. It begins with an internet troll who Chan believes is bent on ruining his reputation and his family's restaurant.</p><p><strong>"Bruh gonna make Chow Dog Mein"</strong></p><p><div type="image" title="JG Chow dog mein" height="1799" width="2399" msid="76450600" hostid="261"></div></p><p>On May 23 at around 3:00 pm, Chan received a phone notification. He opened it to see an Instagram comment posted by an account he didn't recognize and had never interacted with commenting on an old picture of Chan holding his dog. The comment reads, "Bruh gonna make Chow Dog Mein."<br /><br />Chan was shocked to see the comment appear on his personal Instagram. Business Insider reviewed evidence of the exchange in a 28-page protection order that Chan filed with the King County District Court.<br /><br />Chan tried to defuse the problem with the Instagram commenter online, but he says things only got worse. <br /><br />Soon after Chan reached out to his tormentor, the account started spreading a screenshot of a racist message that appears to be from Chan. The end of the message reads, "Fuck your <keyword id="2771111" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="black-lives-matter">Black lives Matter</keyword>!"</p><p>The image caused immediate outrage on Facebook and Instagram. Social media users who identified as Black or allies condemned Chan and called for a boycott of his restaurant. Chan says he started receiving a barrage of abusive phone calls and texts, often from blocked numbers. But he says that the image was doctored, that someone photoshopped his picture and name onto a message he never sent.</p><p><div type="image" title="JG Eric Chan racist comment" height="1799" width="2399" msid="76450603" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Chan eventually found the identity of the Instagram user and filed a protection order against him. He asked Business Insider not to reveal the individual's name due to ongoing legal proceedings. Chan's protection order contains pages of taunting messages from the account that eventually devolve into pictures: a conspiracy theory meme, a picture of an Asian man crying, and a pornographic image of a woman in a sex act.</p><p>Even though the point of his harassment campaign is to make Chan seem anti-Black, pictures of the Instagram commenter on social media appear to show a young, light-skinned male. The commenter did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment via email.</p><p>When Chan spoke out about his story on <a href="https://www.king5.com/article/news/health/coronavirus/seattle-man-says-online-troll-is-hurting-him-and-his-familys-business/281-23cd615b-d57d-464d-8a5f-661c78e9844a">local news</a> and Facebook groups, he received messages from three different women who had been previously harassed by the same Instagram user. One offered to add her own testimony to his police report.</p><p>Still, the threatening calls and messages only kept coming. Police told him to deactivate his social media accounts, and he did. </p><p>Then, George Floyd was murdered.</p><p><strong>"It's being broken into right now. Hurry, hurry, hurry!"</strong></p><p><div type="image" title="Jade Garden break in" height="1410" width="1880" msid="76450609" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Over the weekend after Floyd's death, protests in downtown Seattle escalated into violent <a href="https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/seattle/seattle-police-george-floyd-protests-complaints/281-61729aa7-59bc-47b7-aba9-7e9028b2daac">clashes</a> between protesters and police. During the protests, there were reports of Seattle police pepper-spraying a young girl, covering up their badge numbers, punching people on the ground, and <a href="https://www.king5.com/article/news/local/seattle/seattle-police-george-floyd-protests-complaints/281-61729aa7-59bc-47b7-aba9-7e9028b2daac">breaking windows of a Target store</a>. The Seattle Police Department would not comment on the allegations but referred Business Insider to the <a href="http://www.seattle.gov/opa/complaints/demonstration-complaint-dashboard">demonstration complaint dashboard</a> on the Office of Police Accountability website. Some protesters threw rocks and bottles. By the evening of Saturday, May 30, several police cars had been set on fire and many stores had been broken into and looted. It is unclear if looters were associated with the protests.</p><p>Around 11:30 pm on Saturday, two individuals broke into Jade Garden and made off with the cash register. </p><p>"My buddy who lives across the street from me called me at 11:30 and was yelling, "it's being broken into right now. Hurry, hurry, hurry!" I open up my phone and lo and behold, I see three people break into my restaurant. They smashed the front door and rummaged through everything." Chan said. Chan monitors his restaurant with a series of surveillance cameras connected to his phone.</p><p>He and his family grabbed their guns, piled into their car, and drove over, but the looters were long gone with the cash register by the time they arrived. Chan is convinced that his restaurant was targeted as a result of the racist image circulating on social media.</p><p>"They specifically drove up to my restaurant. And they used the excuse of the protest because that night there were literally zero police officers on call," Chan said. "Every police officer was in Seattle downtown."</p><p>But it's also possible that Jade Garden was randomly attacked. Out of the 50 businesses in Seattle that were affected by the destruction on Saturday, 21 were in the International District, according to <a href="https://twitter.com/hanamkim/status/1267234649039765505">a local TV reporter</a>. </p><p>Chan says that soon after looting began, the police started pushing the crowd from downtown Seattle into the International District. "People kept on destroying shit. Then the police officers trying to control the crowd pushed them all the way back to Chinatown and Chinatown got destroyed."</p><p>Dev Kabanela, a lifelong International District resident, told Business Insider he felt the city abandoned the neighborhood by failing to protect it after pushing protests in its direction. </p><p>"We have been ignored by our city in local protection alongside legitimate Black Lives Matter protesters," Kabanela said. In a Facebook post of pictures showing graffiti, broken windows, and Jade Garden's shattered door, Kabanela said that "the city clearly stopped protecting when [the protests] reached our minority area."</p><p>What happened to Seattle's International District mirrors what happened in 1992 Los Angeles, when riots over the murder of Rodney King were funneled by police away from wealthy white neighborhoods into Koreatown, resulting in the destruction of Korean businesses.</p><p>A spokesperson for Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan told Business Insider that it is standard practice for the SPD to direct protests back to their point of origin. "On Friday night, some demonstrations originated in the Chinatown International District, so officers directed the crowd back toward the CID per protocol."</p><p>Business Insider pointed out that the break-ins happened not on Friday night but on Saturday night when <a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/photos-protests-in-seattle-sparked-by-the-death-of-george-floyd-in-minneapolis/">protests originated in Westlake Park</a> in downtown Seattle. The spokesperson responded with a statement saying, "The Seattle Police Department (SPD) supports the right of people to express their constitutionally protected free speech rights. The SPD will facilitate these demonstrations and protests by communicating openly with the event organizers and creating a plan for safe crowd management operations."</p><p><strong>Not white, not black</strong></p><p><div type="image" title="Tou Thao, Hmong American police officer involved in George Floyd killing" height="1669" width="2500" msid="76450612" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The relationship between Black and Asian American communities have often been marked by tension, and that tension sometimes plays out in news and popular culture.</p><p>At the end of Spike Lee's 1989 film "Do The Right Thing," residents of a majority-Black neighborhood riot and set upon a Korean-owned grocery store after the police choke a Black man to death.</p><p>The shopkeeper waves them away with a broom, screaming, "I not white! I not white! I'm black!" When a Black character looks at him incredulously, saying, "Why're you black? Me black! Me black!" The store owner shouts back: "You, me, same!" </p><p>While Asian and Black Americans are often lumped together into broad categories like "minorities" or BIPOC, solidarity between the two demographics is far from a given. Asian Americans have long benefited from structures of white supremacy in the United States predicated upon anti-blackness, according to Wu, the Asian Studies professor. Often, Asian Americans are complicit in upholding those very structures. </p><p>Tou Thao, one of the officers charged in aiding and abetting the murder of George Floyd, is <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/officer-who-stood-george-floyd-died-asian-american-we-need-n1221311">Hmong American</a>. And in the 2015 NYPD shooting of Caribbean American Akai Gurley, some Chinese Americans rallied in support of Peter Liang, the police officer responsible for Gurley's death, <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2015/05/14/406444625/n-y-police-shooting-case-divides-citys-asian-americans">eliciting backlash</a> from other Chinese and Asian Americans who felt Liang should be held accountable. Finally, as anti-Asian sentiment spread with the pandemic, many Black Americans felt it <a href="https://www.blackenterprise.com/in-the-discussion-of-asian-american-discrimination-amid-covid-19-the-black-community-remains-divided/">wasn't their responsibility</a> to support a group of people that had discriminated against them.</p><p>Since the 1960s, the model minority myth has allowed Asians to enjoy a higher, albeit second-class status in white society while reinforcing negative stereotypes about Black Americans.  As a result, tensions have often flared up between Asian and Black communities. Understanding their shared history is key to advancing Black-Asian solidarity, Wu said.</p><p>"The idea of Asian American studies comes out of the Black Power movement and the antiwar movement in the sixties," Wu said. And now, Wu said, she's seeing an unprecedented willingness from Asian communities to examine their place in American society.</p><p>"This would be a good moment to ask, what does assimilation mean? What are we trying to assimilate into? And if you understand that society, as it is built and functioning right now, is an anti-Black white supremacy, should assimilation really be our goal?"</p><p><strong>"I don't think he himself can stop what's happening to me"</strong></p><p><div type="image" title="Asians for black lives storefront mural" height="1536" width="2048" msid="76450615" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Chan still receives threatening messages every day. He says if things go on like this, his family is thinking about leaving behind the restaurant his parents built and moving somewhere far away from Seattle, maybe China. He wonders if his Instagram tormentor understands the effects his actions have had on Chan's family, saying, "I don't think he himself can stop what is happening to me."<br /><br />On the Sunday after Jade Garden and at least 20 other Chinatown businesses were looted or vandalized, a group of volunteers assembled to clean up the aftermath.</p><p>Volunteers helped to board up stores and restaurants. Artists painted murals on those boards. Some murals celebrated the <keyword id="6181" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Food">food</keyword> or products inside, while others expressed solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, reading "Asians for Black Lives." Other residents and volunteers formed a <a href="https://www.kuow.org/stories/volunteers-keep-watch-on-international-district-in-seattle">block watch group</a> to protect businesses from further damage. </p><p>"The community came together and helped me clean up the glass shards," Chan said. But he's facing at least $2,000 in damages from the break-in and he's still operating with a plywood door. <br /><br />"I agree with what the movement is about, just not the violence and the looting," Chan says, but he remains conflicted. "Business owners that come out and complain and say their s--- was destroyed are being labeled as racist because they're saying you care about your property more than the movement. That's not fair. I'm just trying to protect my business."</p>

A Chinatown restaurant was looted during protests after a troll spread allegedly fake racist messages from the owner, highlighting the complicated relationship between Black and Asian Americans

<p class="source"><span>Gleb Garanich/Reuters</span></p><ul><li><strong>US President Donald Trump founded a modeling agency in 1999.</strong></li><li><strong>In February, Business Insider interviewed two former Trump models who spoke about their experiences working with the agency. They talked about</strong><strong> business practices that included lying about their professions to customs agents. One of the two models said she was left in debt to the agency.</strong></li><li><strong>Referring to the industry as a whole, one of the models told Business Insider: "There's quite a bit of exploitation of young girls going to America illegally and being overcharged for apartments and making very little money."</strong></li><li><strong>A statement released by the Trump Organization indicated that the agency would close soon. Many within the fashion industry had called for a boycott of Trump Models.</strong></li></ul><p>For fashion models around the world, making it to <a href="http://nyfw.com/" target="_blank">New York Fashion Week</a> is a dream. That was the case for two young models from the Netherlands, whose Dutch agency coordinated with <a href="http://www.trumpmodels.com/" target="_blank">Trump Models</a> to bring them to the US in the mid-2000s. They were 17 and 19 years old at the time and had never heard of Donald Trump.</p><p>One of the two models now says she's ashamed that her name was ever connected to his brand. Both women say the agency asked them to lie about their profession and to concoct stories to avoid alerting Customs and Border Protection agents to their intention to work in the US without authorization.</p><p>Their account of what it's like to work as a model in New York - including that they were not paid adequate wages and were housed in cramped, dorm-like apartments - could be said about much of the industry and do not apply only to foreign models. But President Trump has made an anti-immigration campaign an early hallmark of his presidency. He is focused on those who are working illegally in the US and foreign workers who could be displacing Americans. The women Business Insider spoke with fit both descriptions.</p><p>The two models spoke on condition of anonymity. One said she was trying to get a work visa, and the other did not want to use her name because she feared repercussions for speaking out. The details they gave matched those given by other models as reported by <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/08/donald-trump-model-management-illegal-immigration">Mother Jones and CNN last August</a>.</p><p>According to <a href="http://nypost.com/2017/04/07/trump-organization-bails-on-modelling-biz/">a statement</a> that was released by the Trump Organization to the New York Post Friday evening, the company plans to "exit the modeling industry," though it did not provide a timeline for its closure. </p><p>"While we enjoyed many years of success, we are focused on our core businesses in the real estate and golf industries and the rapid expansion of our hospitality division," a spokesperson told the Post. </p><p> Trump Models did not respond to Business Insider's requests for comment about the former models' allegations or the agency's closing. </p><h2>Trump's foray into the modeling business</h2><p>In 1999, Trump decided to extend his business empire into the world of fashion, opening the New York-based agency that bears his name. Trump had previously been married to professional model Ivana Trump, and <a href="http://www.cosmopolitan.com/politics/a8646265/donald-trump-melania-trump-relationship-timeline/">he was dating</a> then-model Melania Knauss, whom he would marry, but this was his first step into the business side of the industry.</p><p>Today, Trump Models represents more than 100 women, which, along with its main line of talent, includes a "development" line, which focuses on new talent, and a "legacy" line, which represents more experienced models. Trump Models' website says that the agency "is the brainstorm and vision of owner, Donald Trump."</p><p>Last May, when the Federal Election Commission released Trump's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-financial-disclosure-net-worth-2016-5">104-page personal financial disclosure</a>, it was revealed that Trump had generated a nearly $2 million dollar profit from the modeling agency, and <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/08/donald-trump-model-management-illegal-immigration">Mother Jones reported</a> that Trump owned an 85% stake in the company at the time. Before the inauguration, Trump announced that his business holdings would be placed in the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust; however, recent reports show that Trump is still closely tied to the trust and it is listed under his <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/03/us/politics/donald-trump-business.html?_r=0">Social Security number</a> for federal tax purposes.</p><p>In addition to the usual runway shows, advertising campaigns, editorial spreads, and Fashion Week bookings, Trump Models is closely tied to Trump's other endeavors. The agency and its models have worked with Trump's reality-TV show, "The Apprentice," starring in episodes that included fashion-based challenges. Mother Jones <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/08/donald-trump-model-management-illegal-immigration">reported</a> that some of the agency's models were discovered through Miss Universe and Miss USA competitions, which Trump purchased in 1996 and has <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-sells-miss-universe-img-2015-9">since sold</a>.</p><h2>Coming to America, without a visa</h2><p>One of the former Trump models told Business Insider that when she was 17 years old she was represented by a local modeling agency in the Netherlands and was looking for more work to build her portfolio. Her agency coordinated a work trip to New York where she would work with Trump Models. Along with two other models from the same agency, she planned to spend three weeks in the US. They did not have work visas, but they were chaperoned by someone who did.</p><p>Upon entering the country to work, without a visa she and the other model Business Insider spoke with were potentially violating immigration laws. Though they were still being paid by their Netherlands-based modeling agency, anyone working and receiving compensation for work done for any time in the US is required to have a work visa.</p><p>"I was 17 years old the first time I came [to New York] and one of the girls I was with was 14," one of the models said. "She was told to tell people she was 15 because they know that a lot of people would feel difficulty working with a 14-year-old."</p><p>Like many foreign models, her goal was to find a US-based modeling agency that would represent her and help her get a work visa so that she could legally come to the US for jobs. But finding an agency that does both is challenging.</p><p>She said their first trip to New York for Trump Models was positive overall. "The first experience was quite good," she said. "They arranged test shoots, got me one job, and a good editorial [shoot]. I was very happy."</p><p>The second model agreed: "They were professional like any other agency - everything seemed professional."</p><p>After the first model's visit, Trump Models still wasn't ready to help coordinate a work visa for her. The agency said she needed to work on her portfolio more and build her client list. Over the course of a year back home, she took jobs in Europe and Australia. The second trip to New York to work with Trump Models was initiated by the model herself, who was determined to build her portfolio and have the agency sponsor her work visa.</p><p>They gladly took her on, she said, but again didn't work out a visa before the trip.</p><p>According to accounts from both models, they were specifically instructed by Trump Model agents not to take their portfolio books with them on the plane, as doing so can be a red flag to customs agents. They said Trump Models gave them the address of a booker and told them to tell customs that they were visiting a friend at that address. Under no circumstances were they supposed to tell customs that they were models.</p><p>That - and the fact that she'd be going through customs without a chaperone or visa - made the first model freeze up, and she ultimately told customs that she was a model when asked about her occupation. It wasn't an issue, and she was let through.</p><p>"I was so nervous, I was sweaty, and I was red. I was so tense," she said.</p><p class="source"><span>Shutterstock</span></p><p>On this second trip, she stayed at the "model apartments," where many would stay while in town on jobs.</p><p>"It's a box. It's tiny," she said. "There's a living room with an open kitchen ... a tiny bathroom, the bedrooms, and in each room there was two bunk beds."</p><p>Her plan was to stay for four weeks, but the bookers at Trump Models requested she stay another month once they saw that castings were going well. Homesick and ready to return to her boyfriend in the Netherlands, she stayed for only another two weeks.</p><p>Her third and final visit with Trump Models was for Fashion Week later that year. Arriving at a New York City airport right before Fashion Week can be risky for those coming into the city without a work visa. She and the agency strategically planned around this, she said. Her flights, coordinated by a booker at Trump Models, had her visit a friend a week previously "elsewhere in America" and then fly into New York for Fashion Week.</p><p>But Fashion Week "didn't go well," and between the cost of the flight and housing, she was in debt to the agency. Most important, her third visit confirmed what she had already thought: "I never believed that Trump Models believed in me, and their lack of effort getting me a visa is proof of that," she said.</p><p>Ultimately, her Netherlands-based agency broke off all ties with Trump Models, and she has since started working with another US-based agency that she says is working to get her a visa. The second model has left the fashion world altogether.</p><h2>'American workers first'</h2><p>Both models said their experiences with Trump Models are not that different from what they've seen at other agencies.</p><p>"It's regular fashion business s--- that you have to put up with. The experience I had with Trump Models ... wasn't different from experiences I've had with other places and other agencies," one said. "Agencies ... fabricate a very beautiful story, and tempt you with it - it works well when you're younger."</p><p>According to the first model's account, the agencies pay for the flight up front, expecting the model to pay them back with jobs once she arrives. That, coupled with housing expenses, means that some models are just breaking even.</p><p>"They book you a job with quite a lot of money when you first arrive so you [can] pay back your flight and advance on the apartment," she said. "There's quite a bit of exploitation of young girls going to America illegally and being overcharged for apartments and making very little money."</p><p>In the past year, Trump Models has come under fire for the practices - in particular, the alleged visa violations - because of how the business contradicted candidate Trump's public statements on the issue.</p><p>One of his <a href="http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/trumpometer/promise/1416/hire-american-workers-first/">campaign pledges</a> was to "establish new immigration controls to boost wages and to ensure that open jobs are offered to American workers first."</p><p class="source"><span>Reuters/Carlo Allegri</span></p><h2>Backlash from other models</h2><p>In August, Mother Jones cited three former Trump Models who said they had <a href="http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/08/donald-trump-model-management-illegal-immigration">worked in the US</a> without proper work visas. Former model Rachel Blais, who is now an advocate against unjust practices in the modeling industry, spoke out about her time at Trump Models, saying they are "the most crooked agency" she's ever worked for.</p><p>Model Maggie Rizer, who seems to have had a positive experience with her agent at Trump Models, publicly left the agency on the eve of election night.</p><p>She wrote in <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BMfHZLygPL4/">an Instagram post</a> that "as a woman, a mother, an American and a human being, I cannot wake up Wednesday morning being the least bit related to the Trump brand; win or lose. I owe it to myself and to my children to proudly stand up for what I believe in and that is a world where Donald Trump has no voice for the future of our country."</p><p><span>In February, </span><a href="http://www.refinery29.com/2017/02/140181/trump-models-boycott-calls-fashion-industry">Refinery29 reported</a><span> that various groups of people in the fashion industry, including casting directors, makeup artists, and hair stylists, were calling for a full boycott of Trump Models.</span></p><p>Today, the first model who shared her story with Business Insider says she feels ashamed of her involvement with the agency.</p><p>"It's embarrassing to say out loud, to say that I've worked for Trump Models," she said.</p><p>"Now, looking back knowing that I worked for Donald Trump ... it's really insane, it's really awful. It's bizarre working for someone that you now realize how completely opposite his ethics are of mine," she said.
