The creator said that they were quitting their job at Starbucks and that they judged every customer who still ordered from there.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-middle-east-franchisee-slash-jobs-israel-gaza-report-2024-3">Starbucks has faced criticism and boycotts</a> during the Israel-Hamas war from supporters of both sides. Pressure against the company has also been building since 2022 in response to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/starbucks-union-illegal-tactics-claims-workers-buffalo-new-york-nlrb-2022-6">union-busting tactics</a>.As a result, it has become severely frowned upon by a large sector of young people on social media for people to show themselves ordering from the chain. Other recently shunned companies include McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Hyundai, HP, and Siemens.Some companies may be starting to take notice and change. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.deloitte.com/global/en/about/governance/global-impact-report/global-report-environmental.html">Deloitte</a>, for example, has committed to environmental sustainability and social equality following its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.deloitte.com/global/en/issues/work/content/genzmillennialsurvey.html">2023 Gen Z and Millennial Survey</a> that found younger generations were demanding more from employers regarding these issues. In a <a target="_blank" href="https://www2.deloitte.com/content/dam/Deloitte/us/Documents/consumer-business/welcome-to-gen-z.pdf">2018 survey by Deloitte</a>, 77% of Gen Z respondents said it was important to work at a company whose values aligned with theirs. Gen Zers told Business Insider they would spurn certain companies that didn't reach their expectations when it came to LGBTQ+ issues, world conflicts, and policies — or lack thereof — around work-life balance and time off.Karim Adib, for example, a Zoomer who works as a public-relations specialist at ClickThrough Marketing, told BI that Gen Zers were very aware of their impact on the world, including how they were making their money.He said growing up with the internet and starting their careers in a remote work environment had given the generation more options."With those options, we now don't have to join companies that don't align with who we are because there are plenty of companies that do that we can apply for," he said.Omar Taleb, a Gen Zer who graduated last year, told BI he was surprised to learn how much he cared about a company's values when considering prospective job opportunities.He never considered his employer "to be the barometer of morality," he said, but since the pandemic, Black Lives Matter protests after the death of George Floyd, and the ongoing conflict in Gaza, "neutrality seems so dated," he said."We were given no choice but to care about a company's ethics and principles," he said. "A company with stated values and actions to support said values tells me they see themselves as a force for good in society. It makes it all the better showing up to work and putting in the hours."<h2>Bringing their whole selves to work</h2>Erin McGoff, a film director and TikTok creator who makes content about life and career advice, told BI Gen Zers had a goal of bringing their "whole self to work."Traditionally, with previous generations, there has been a work-life separation, such as not discussing one's personal life or politics in the office.But McGoff said Gen Zers wanted their workplace to align politically — so they had to talk about it. At the same time, they're big supporters of the work-life balance — coining the term "<a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/lazy-girl-job-trend-tiktok-explained-defending-low-stress-work-2023-7">lazy-girl jobs</a>" and believing in the benefits of "<a target="_blank" rel="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-z-quiet-quitting-work-ethic-millennials-money-struggles-2023-10">quiet quitting</a>.""They want to bring their whole selves to work, but they also don't want work to be their life," McGoff said.Adib said the issues important to him included social equality and giving everyone a fair shot."I can't associate or work with any company that helps further social inequality in any way, as no paycheck can help feeling you're making someone else's life harder by doing your 9-to-5," he said.<div type="image" title="Members of Gen Z sit on computers and tablets." height="1667" width="2500" msid="109370713" hostid="261"></div>Gabrielle Yap, who's 26, said Gen Zers grew up in a time when information was available at their fingertips 24/7."We've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly of various companies through social media, news, and other channels," she said."That means we're pretty clued into what goes on behind the scenes, and we're not just looking for a flashy brand or a big paycheck. We want to align ourselves with companies that walk the talk, so to speak."Whether it's social-justice initiatives, environmental policies, or fostering diversity and inclusion in the workplace, Yap said she wanted to feel as if she was contributing to something meaningful at work."I want to see tangible evidence that the company is committed to these values," she said. "It's not just about making a profit anymore; it's about making a difference."Research from Bright Network, a networking service that connects recent graduates and students with employers, found that sustainability was an important consideration for 92% of young job-seekers who wanted the companies they were applying for to be moving toward net-zero status.A recent survey by the legal recruiter Major, Lindsey &amp; Africa also found that when considering an employer, 60% of Gen Z lawyers thought pro-bono work was of high importance."Our generation was also blessed with the knowledge that there's more to the world than just our immediate surroundings," Adib said."With that came the knowledge that your work affects other people around the world, the environment, and maybe even future generations."<h2>Moving the needle on what we discuss at work</h2>Khalid Machchate, the chairman of K&amp;W Technology Group and a millennial who hires Zoomers, told BI that politics, money, and even religion had all become discussable in the workplace for Gen Z, "which would've been unfathomable to previous generations.""The company's public stance on these points, as well as the managers' views, affect the organization's capacity to hire Gen Zers," he said.He added that this cohort also tended to quit "fairly quickly" if their organization didn't align with their views.Taleb told BI it wasn't that he wouldn't apply for certain jobs, but he would question how long he could last in an environment that he disagreed with."Especially as a gay man of color," he said. "Sitting in an office and pretending the social fabric isn't fraying doesn't work for me and the rest of my generation."Yap told BI that transparency was something she valued highly at the company she worked for. This includes what its policies are, as well as its shortcomings.Overall, she said, she appreciated a good company culture — somewhere she felt "valued, supported, and empowered to grow both personally and professionally.""A company's principles, ethics, and values are a big part of shaping its culture," she said. Indian users are fuming on social media over some controversial posts targeting Kashmir by reputed multinationals. Hyundai's Pakistan dealership came under heavy fire for sharing a post on its official social media handles, extending support to "Kashmir Solidarity Day". Soon after, #BoycottHyundai started trending on Twitter, with Indians condemning the car giant's controversial stand. Now, KFC has come under scrutiny over the same reasons, IB Times reported. Indians are calling for a boycott of KFC, the popular fast-food chain with branches across the globe. The reason for the social media boycott, which is trending in India under the hashtag #BoycottKFC, is a post shared by the eatery's Pakistan handle last year. "We stand together this Kashmir Solidarity Day, to realise their right to freedom," KFC PAK wrote. Making things worse, a picture of snowy mountains with overlaying text: Their cravings for freedom are heartfelt, was shared. The word Kashmir is marked with a barbed wire, signifying Kashmir is not free, the report said. As the screenshot of last year's tweet by KFC Pakistan on Kashmir went viral, many Indians took to Twitter to express their dismay. Hundreds and thousands of users have called out the propaganda against India on the sensitive issue of Kashmir. Netizens are already pledging never to eat again at a KFC joint, IB Times reported. The social media post, which triggered this controversy, remains active on all of KFC Pakistan's social media channels. KFC India, however, has issued an apology for the controversial post from its Pak handles, the report said. Korean car maker Hyundai Motor India found itself on a sticky road with its statement that many Indians consider as insufficient and skirting over the issue of whether Kashmir is an integral part of India. But regardless of some worsening opinions of Musk, Tesla's reputation has remained<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musks-politics-twitter-customers-still-love-the-model-3-2023-7"> mostly unscathed.</a> People buy and drive the cars regardless. <h2>History repeats itself </h2>For some time, many American car buyers swore off purchasing a non-American-made vehicle. Yet the industry eventually saw the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheap-chinese-electric-cars-will-upend-the-us-vehicle-market-2023-5">proliferation of automakers like Toyota, Hyundai, and Honda</a> — largely due to their affordability and fuel efficiency."There's a difference between people's allegiances to their country and what they buy at the store," Bill Russo, CEO of advisory firm Automobility, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-united-states-electric-vehicle-market-share-auto-brands-pricing-2023-1">previously told Insider</a>.People <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/01/business/volkswagen-sales-diesel.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">swore off Volkswagen after its several-billion-dollar diesel emissions scandal</a> — yet the brand saw a bounceback. "They've proven that they're the leader in EVs, and now they seem to be encroaching on some market share" from the gas-powered market, too.<h2>Follow the money</h2><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ev-buyers-want-electric-car-range-value-low-cost-ownership-2023-4">Early EV adopters have been less financially motivated</a> and more interested in a unique vehicle that's futuristic, according to a Berylls study, thus automatically pulling them to Tesla. <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2023/06/20/2691156/0/en/EVs-Spark-Brand-Loyalty-Shakeup-8-out-of-10-EV-Shoppers-Say-They-re-Open-to-Purchasing-From-Another-Brand.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Future waves of buyers</a> are going to lean more on what price tag makes sense.Either way, a lot is working in Musk's favor. He's gotten a headstart on the rest of the EV industry, and the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-ev-price-war-creating-headache-entire-auto-industry-2023-4">recent price war he's waged</a> makes his vehicles incredibly competitive. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-price-range-cost">Tesla Model 3 and Model Y EVs are going for as low as $40,240 and $47,740</a>, respectively, while the average transaction price for EVs overall is $53,438 right now, according to <a href="https://mediaroom.kbb.com/2023-07-11-Kelley-Blue-Book-Analysis-Average-New-Vehicle-Transaction-Price-in-June-Posts-Smallest-Annual-Gain-in-Nearly-4-Years">Kelley Blue Book</a> (and that number is weighed down by Tesla prices).Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, recently said <a href="https://www.autonews.com/manufacturing/tavares-says-ev-sweet-spot-25k#:~:text=Stellantis%20CEO%20Carlos%20Tavares%2C%20who,EVs%20is%20%22around%20%2425%2C000.%22">the EV pricing sweet spot</a> is "around $25,000."If that's the case, Tesla is one of few EV-makers close to that number, particularly when you take into account tax credits. In fact, Tesla earlier this week reminded customers about $15,000 worth of credits available to eligible California-based buyers, saying: "You could drive home a new Model 3 starting at $25,240 before taxes and fees, after combining the state vehicle rebate of up to $7,500 with the $7,500 federal tax credit."<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cheapest-electric-cars-affordable-toyota-chevy-hyundai-kia-nissan-tesla-2023-1">To be sure, there are other affordable EV offerings,</a> including the $26,500 Chevrolet Bolt EV; the $27,800 Bolt EUV; the $27,800 Nissan Leaf; the $33,550 Hyundai Kona; the $38,995 Volkswagen ID.4; or the $39,950 Kia Niro (note, not all of those <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-tax-credit">qualify for the tax credits that could bring their cost down another $3,750 or $7,500</a>). Customers could choose from these brands or wait for the right product at the right price; several automakers say they have more affordable EVs in the works for the coming years. But Tesla also has the longstanding <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-supercharger-map">advantage of its Supercharger network</a>. Despite Tesla slowly losing market share over the past few years (down from 79% of the market in 2020 to 65% of the market last year), <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-deliveries-production-acted-like-normal-car-company-it-worked-2023-7">the company sold a record 466,000 cars in Q2</a>."All of the research that we've done with EV intenders to date has demonstrated that Tesla might not get the sale, but if you are an EV intender, you will always have them in the consideration set," Stephen Beck, managing partner of consultancy cg42."It doesn't mean you're going to look at a Tesla and look at a Mach-E or a Taycan or what Hyundai is doing or what Mercedes is doing, and still select that Tesla. But it does mean that today," Beck added, "they're going to be looked at."Any impact of less-than-positive sentiment is yet to materialize substantially."I wonder how fickle that's going to be," French said, "and how that will change in the next few years."

Lotte Corporation, one of Korea’s chaebol conglomerates that dominate its economy, had sold a plot of land in Seongju county to the South Korean government, on which the system’s radar and interceptor missiles were set up. While both Washington and Seoul said it was meant to counter threats from North Korea, Beijing viewed THAAD as a security risk, since its radar had the range to monitor China’s nearby military facilities. After it was deployed in 2017, THAAD triggered widespread boycotts of Lotte’s retail operations in China, with the state-owned media acting as aggressive cheerleaders. The company was sanctioned by Beijing, with its expansion plans in China grinding to a halt on the orders of the Chinese government. Australia – like South Korea – is heavily dependent on trade with China, but is also closely bound to the US in defence and political terms, and Bishop feared that Australia's fall out of favour with Beijing, Australian companies could face similar riska, and so she sought the counsel of the politician, who asked not to be named. The case of Canadian canola and meat exports being banned from China, reportedly in retaliation for the arrest of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou, also known as Sabrina Meng and Cathy Meng, is an example of how third nations can be drawn into the modern day superpower rivalry. Many analysts say the efforts of South Korean firms in China should be essential study material for Western governments and businesses about the political risks of doing business in the mainland, which are growing as the US-China trade war threatens to draw in other nations and expand into a broader geopolitical struggle. But large South Korean firms have been gradually withdrawing from China for a number of years – even before the THAAD crisis – and have been able to leave on a managed basis. They are leaving to avoid a repeat of the political crisis that ruined Lotte’s China business, and to avoid tariffs on exports of their China-made products to the US. But they are also leaving because Chinese firms have become much more competitive in the domestic market that South Korean companies had found so fruitful for more than a decade – a fate that could easily befall Western companies that are eyeing China’s burgeoning middle-class consumer market. Now, while American firms are considering exiting China and setting up in nations that have lower tariff access to the US, South Korean competitors have had a few years’ head start. “In a way, all the problems that some South Korean companies had since 2017 might be a blessing in disguise. It meant that they started all of this [supply chain shift] two years before all the other companies,” said Andrew Gilholm, Seoul-based director of analysis for China and Korea at political risk advisory, Control Risks. Another chaebol, <keyword id="10591" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Samsung">Samsung</keyword> Electronics, opened its first plant in Vietnam in 2008 and this long-term presence has enabled it to build a supply chain of South Korean companies, which in turn makes it easier for other South Korean firms to establish a base in the Southeast Asian nation.

Overall in 2018, South Korea’s total investment to the Southeast Asian country totalled US$3.2 billion. Its exports to Vietnam also increased to US$48.6 billion, 121 times that of 1992, when the two countries established diplomatic relations, and the trend is expected to continue. “We have experienced some of the worst situations in China over the past few years and learnt that the political risk there wouldn’t just simply go away overnight,” said a former manager of Lotte Shopping, the chaebol’s retail arm, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “China may pass all the legislation ensuring the safety of foreign investments and the rights of multinational companies, but the chance of it swinging away again when there is another political confrontation is just too high … we cannot afford to take any more risk.” China eventually lifted its economic sanctions on Lotte in April, and the municipal government of Shenyang, the capital of Liaoning province in Northeastern China, gave the company permission in May to resume work on the US$2.6 billion Lotte Town shopping and leisure development. But according to a person close to the project, Lotte is considering selling the complex after its completion, as it does not wish to continue its retail business in China. A Lotte spokesman declined to comment, saying the situation is “complicated”. On one hand, its eagerness to leave China reflects the volatility in the market, but on the other, its decision to complete the construction of project before leaving suggests an unwillingness to burn bridges in the process, analysts said. Samsung is another South Korean giant downsizing its Chinese manufacturing presence after it closed its Shenzhen production line in May 2018, followed by its Tianjin factory in December.

 Its last remaining mobile phone production line in <a class="link-text" href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/3014564/samsungs-last-china-smartphone-factory-closing-raising">China, in Huizhou, is also winding down,</a> implementing a voluntary retirement programme. Samsung is also considering moving some television manufacturing from China to Vietnam, according to a company insider. However, it too, is carefully managing its exit strategy, said Jason Wright, founder of Hong Kong-based intelligence firm Argo Associates, who is advising a growing number of South Korean companies seeking to leave China. Samsung is still a large supplier of microchips to Chinese companies like Huawei, and to exit on negative terms could disrupt its ongoing business. “Samsung has been quite generous in the packages that have been offered [to workers in the factories that it has closed],” Wright said. “Samsung has been very aware of the potential issues around those closures.” As well as the political risks and tariffs, Samsung has seen its mainland market share in several product queues shrink dramatically due to competition from Chinese rivals. Its share of China's smartphone market, for example, fell from 20 per cent in 2013 to just 0.8 per cent last year, according to Strategy Analytics, a market research firm. Over the same period, it has been moving its supply chain out of China in a "subtle and imprecptible" way, according to Julien Chaisse, a professor of trade law at City University of Hong Kong who advised, among others, Lotte on its plans to relocate Vietnam. As stories emerged in June that Apple was considering a partial exit of China, it was impossible not to see parallels. <keyword id="6354606" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="iPhone">iPhone</keyword> sales in China fell 30 per cent in the first quarter of 2019, according to research firm Canalys, while smartphones will be among those facing a potential tariff of up to 25 per cent, although this has been at least delayed after the trade war truce agreed by <a class="link-text" href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/article/3016610/donald-trump-speaks-g20-summit-after-breakthrough-meeting-xi-jinping">US President Donald Trump</a> and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the <a class="link-text" href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/3016602/world-watches-presidents-xi-jinping-donald-trump-begin-summit">G20 summit in Osaka. </a> Meanwhile, South Korean car companies Kia and Hyundai’s combined market share in China fell to 2.7 per cent last year, from about 10 per cent at the beginning of the decade. Both companies, which have shared ownership, are downsizing their Chinese operations. “In the past, China was just a great market, but for Korea, now China has become a competitor. So that is really a change in the dynamic over the last five years. China was not really able to compete with Korea in most areas,” said Wright from Argo Associates. City University of Hong Kong professor Chaisse traces the exodus of South Korean firms back to 2014, before THAAD and before the trade war, and highlighted an arcane arbitration case at the United Nations’ dispute settlement courts as a turning point. After that case, South Korean companies in China faced an increasingly hostile environment. Filed in 2014 and settled in 2017, the case emerged after South Korean company Ansung Housing had been forced to sell a golf resort it was developing in Eastern China after a change in the country’s real estate legislation. Ansung took the case to an arbitration panel, claiming it breached a Sino-Korean investment treaty. The company won – only the second defeat for China in two decades of participation in the court, but this ushered in a “change in atmosphere” for South Korean firms. “My take is that while the Korean case is unique for a number of reasons, it highlights what is going to happen to many other foreign companies operating in China,” Chaisse said. “I think very soon even European companies will be reconsidering their businesses in China. Every time it will be a different story: different countries, different companies, in different economic sectors will have different reaction times and the magnitude of their withdrawal may vary.” But for those now fleeing trade war tariffs, they may not have the luxury of long-term planning that companies like Samsung and Lotte have had, said Gilholm from Control Risks. “Long term, I think the Korean firms that are moving out of China have had it easier because they haven't had to do it under quite such pressured and scrutinised circumstances as a company which starts to move things now,” he said.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Visa has become the latest World Cup sponsor to publicly criticize football's governing body FIFA for its handling of the investigation into alleged corruption over the bidding process that will see Russia holding the 2018 tournament and the 2022 competition being held in Qatar.
<a href="http://www.marketingweek.com/2014/11/27/visa-demands-more-forthright-comms-from-fifa-to-combat-corruption-scandal/">Marketing Week reports</a> that Visa - which has a contract with FIFA to sponsor the World Cup until 2022, at an estimated value of £120 million over a four-year tournament-long period, according to sponsorship agency BrandRapport - is calling for more "forthright communications" from FIFA.
Visa released this statement on its <a href="http://www.marketingweek.com/2014/11/27/visa-demands-more-forthright-comms-from-fifa-to-combat-corruption-scandal/">corporate Tumblr page</a>:

FIFA has an ever-growing crisis on its hands: it needs to hold on to the support of its sponsors as they account for 40% its commercial revenue, according to its latest financial filings. But that support is waning, at least as far as corporate communications are concerned. Visa's statement <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/world-cup-sponsor-coke-criticizes-fifa-corruption-investigation-2014-11?r=US">comes in the same week Coca-Cola said</a> the handling of FIFA's botched investigation into the bidding process has been "disappointing." It adds to the growing negative tenor between sponsors and FIFA - other sponsors including <a href="http://www.marketingweek.com/2014/06/09/fifa-sponsors-break-silence-over-qatar-world-cup-row/">Adidas, Hyundai, Sony and Budweiser</a> have all previously released statements criticizing FIFA and the media storm it has created surrounding the World Cup bidding process - and brands are looking to distance themselves from the scandals.
A <a href="http://online.wsj.com/articles/sony-pulls-world-cup-sponsorship-1416901673">report in the Wall Street Journal</a> this week suggested that Sony is close to terminating its contract with FIFA altogether, partly due to the controversy surrounding FIFA's investigation. The contract is up for renewal this year.
Earlier this month <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/emirates-pulls-out-from-fifa-sponsorship-2014-11?r=US">Emirates announced it was ending its sponsorship of the World Cup</a> after an eight-year partnership with FIFA, "following an evaluation of FIFA's contract proposal which did not meet Emirates' expectations."
Most people took that to read that Emirates was uneasy about the corruption claims surrounding the bid process for the World Cup, particularly the 2022 tournament held in Dubai. However, the decision may also have been made because the brand is in a far more prominent place than it was back in 2006, and the brand awareness opportunity a World Cup can offer is no longer necessary. Emirates' contract also came to an end in 2014 anyway.
Sponsors have become increasingly perturbed with FIFA after the governing body released a summary of report on its investigation into the World Cup bidding process, cleaning the winning Qatar and Russia bids of any corruption. Shortly after its publication, the summary was disowned by FIFA's own ethics chief Michael Garcia, who said the report had been "misrepresented."
FIFA announced last week it was lodging a criminal complaint with the Swiss attorney general regarding "possible misconduct of individual persons in connection with the awarding of the hosting rights of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups." <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2845804/Five-FIFA-officials-involved-2018-2022-World-Cup-bidding-process-face-new-Swiss-probe.html">The Mail on Sunday reports</a> that five officials with connections to FIFA are at the center of the investigation. But FIFA's ethics judge Hans-Joachim Eckert said there was not enough evidence to question the entire bidding process. 
Awarding the 2022 World Cup to Qatar has been controversial decision. <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com.au/2022-qatar-world-cup-winter-date-2014-11">Qatar said earlier this month</a> it will not be able to keep its promise to hold the 2022 World Cup in the summer - completely disrupting European football seasons and potentially clashing with the Winter Olympics - its original $200 billion construction proposal has already seen <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-04-20/qatar-cuts-number-of-world-cup-soccer-stadiums-amid-rising-costs.html">12 stadiums cut to eight</a>, and the country's football body is continually fending off accusations of poor workers' conditions and a mounting death toll, which at the last report stood at around 900.
But despite the growing furore FIFA is facing at the moment, most sponsorship experts that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/world-cup-sponsor-coke-criticizes-fifa-corruption-investigation-2014-11?r=US">Business Insider has spoken to</a> don't think a widespread boycott is likely. The World Cup is an unrivaled marketing opportunity in terms of scale and, if a sponsor were to pull out, one of their rivals would be all-too-glad to step in.
