In 1988, Rajiv Gandhi’s China visit led to the diplomatic relations between the two nations. The book is a collection of 18 researches by Indian and Chinese scholars and diplomats talking about the ‘multi-layered’ relationship with regard to 1950s ‘hindi cheeni bhai bhai’, the border dispute, defense and economic ties etc.

Here are the five books that will help you decode the India China relations — beyond just the border dispute

India has applied for entry into the elite <keyword id="106964" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Nuclear-Suppliers-Group">Nuclear Suppliers Group</keyword>, and has also got the support of Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann, who has announced that his country will extend support to New Delhi's membership in the 48-member group after holding comprehensive talks with PM Narendra Modi. 
 
To make chances of entry into the esteemed club smoother, Modi government has also restored an organisation which would be the nodal agency for nuclear cooperation with smaller countries. However, even after all these efforts, nuclear experts think that China will not let India enter the club easily. 
 
Leading American think tanks, like Stimson Center, United States Institute of Peace and School of Advanced International Studies have opined that India's NSG application, which is due for review on June 9 at the NSG meeting, will be facing a lot of objections from China, who wants to crush India’s dreams of becoming an NSG member. 
 
China feels that if the NSG countries make an exception for India to enter the club, Pakistan should not be left behind, even though Islamabad was caught selling nuclear weapons secrets to Libya, because of which it had to face global embarrassment. 
 
"Pakistan and China have played their cards really well this time around. Pakistan has an application for NSG membership and China can, therefore, argue what's good for the goose is good for the gander," said Micheal Krepon, a nuclear proliferation expert and co-founder of the Stimson Center. 
 
Experts expect China to stress on Pakistan being given the same exceptions as India, the reason being dependency of Pakistan’s nuclear program on Chinese supplies. 
 
Beijing has been continuously assisting Pakistan for its civil and military nuclear programme, thereby violating the obligations and commitments that it had made as an NSG member. 
 
"It would be very surprising if China lets India in without an equal concession for Pakistan," said Colin Cookman, program officer at the United States Institute of Peace. 
 
If India enters the club, it would also shake China's position in the strategic battle which is being fought in Asia. However, it would cover it up saying that their opposition is just out of a sense of international equality. 
 However, China is not the only country which could be putting roadblocks in India’s journey to NSG. Several <keyword id="3362769" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="NSG-Members">NSG members</keyword> would shy away from supporting India because of its refusal to sign the CTBT and the Fissile Material Cut-Off Treaty, and the fact that the promise of nuclear reactor construction contracts with India never materialised. 
 
The club works on a consensus basis, which needs every country to at least not object to a new membership, if not support it.

Pakistan’s ‘friend’ China won’t let India enter Nuclear Suppliers Group alone, say experts

Later this week, India will celebrate Holi, the festival of colours. It’s also that time of the year when the boycott Chinese-goods-wallahs, tend to become hyperactive. This stems from the fact that over the years, a lot of Made-in-China pichkaris (water guns) and colours, have made it into the Indian market. This year, China’s decision to block the declaration of Masood Azhar as a global terrorist at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), has added fuel to fire. And hence, we are gunning for Chinese goods. But the question at the end of the day is, how feasible is this? Can India really afford to boycott Chinese goods? And if it does what difference will it really make? Let’s take a look at this pointwise. 1) Take a look at Figure 1. It basically plots India’s exports to China, India’s imports from China, along with the trade deficit. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[

 India has been running a trade deficit with China for a very long time -- India’s imports from China are more than its exports to China. Figure 1 has data starting from 1991-92. In 1991-92 and 1992-93, India ran a trade surplus with China (its exports to China were more than its imports from China) and since then it has been running a trade deficit, which has exploded in the last 15 years. Hence, India’s trade deficit with China is not recent. It has been there for a while. 2) Why has India’s trade deficit with China exploded? The answer lies in the simple fact that India’s imports from China have exploded, whereas India’s exports to China have slowed down. In 2003-04, India’s trade deficit with China was around a billion dollars with exports to China being $3 billion, whereas imports from China at $4 billion. By 2011-12, the Indian exports to China had risen to $18.3 billion, which is where they peaked at. The imports during the same year were at $57.6 billion. The imports continued to increase after this and in 2017-18, stood at $76.4 billion, with exports falling to $13.3 billion. Hence, the trade deficit has kept increasing. What this also tell us is that India’s global export competitiveness over the years has come down dramatically. And this has hurt us in our trade with China as well. This is where the problem is. 3) It is important to understand that no one is forcing Indians to import goods from China. The fact that we are doing it is out of free will. The Chinese goods are either more value for money (i.e. better quality for the price demanded) or they are goods which are simply not widely available in India. Hence, it’s a matter of free choice and many Indians have executed that choice and chosen to buy Chinese goods. This free choice needs to be respected. In 2017-18, 16.4% of India’s total imports where from China. 4) What about those wanting a ban on the import of Chinese goods? Without getting into whether it’s possible to do that given the international regulations that prevail, there is another simple point that needs to be made. Typically, people supporting ban on Chinese goods tend to belong to traders’ bodies. It’s easy for traders to organise themselves into bodies. The Confederation of Indian Traders is one such body. The same is not true for customers. As mentioned earlier, one of the reasons Indians have been buying Chinese goods is because they offer more value for money. If they are forced to buy Indian goods, they will end up paying more for these goods. Of course, they have no way of organising themselves to protest against paying more. 5) Also, there is another fundamental point that people don’t tend to realise. Everyone only has so much money to spend. If people are forced to pay more for Indian products, they will cut down on expenditure somewhere else, in order to keep the overall expenditure constant. Hence, net-net, chances are there overall expenditure will still be the same. If people spend more, then their savings will come down, and at the societal level that will have its own repercussions. 6) India’s imports from China form around 3% of China’s overall exports. Hence, any attempt to stop import of Chinese goods is not going to monetarily hit China much. Over the years, the country has diversified its trade. On the slip side China’s imports from India, make up for around 4.4% of India’s exports. So, as a country India is slightly more dependent on China than vice versa. 7) So, what is the way out? The way out is for Indian companies and companies operating in India to produce goods at a competitive price and of competitive quality, something which encourages Indians to buy Indian products. Take the case of the current financial year. The total imports from China between April 2018 and January 2019, are at $60.2 billion. They had stood at $63.3 billion between April 2017 and January 2018. One of the major reasons for this is the fall in the import of telecom instruments (primarily mobile phones) from China. Between April 2017 and January 2018, India had imported telecom instruments worth $13.3 billion from China. Between April 2018 and January 2019, India imported telecom instruments worth $6.7 billion. Hence, these imports have come down dramatically. The interesting thing is that in January 2019, total telecom instruments worth $494.7 million were imported. This is just 36.2% of the total telecom instruments imported in January 2018. What does this mean? Given that mobile phone sales haven’t slowed down, it basically means that more and more mobile phones bought in India, are now being assembled in India, though key parts are still imported from China. This is good news. Many international mobile phones brands are pumping money into making mobile phones in India. This needs to be further encouraged. And this is the strategy that needs to be applied across sectors. Companies need to be encouraged to operate and manufacture stuff out of India, which is something that is clearly not happening. It is also visible in our exports, with exports in 2017-18, almost being the same as exports in 2012-13. There has been some improvement this year. 8) Manufactured goods still remain the number one Indian import from China. This simply stems from the fact that the Chinese products are more value for money. Hence, India needs to be more competitive while taking on China, and that is easier said than done. Many Indians want to shun Chinese goods -- here’s why that doesn’t make sense

Last month we saw the somewhat odd reports that a 150-year-old French history book, Alexis de Tocqueville's The Old Regime and the French Revolution, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/tocqueville-becomes-chinese-best-seller-2013-1">had become a surprise best seller in China</a>.
Now we have another bizarre best seller to add to the list. A new Chinese translation of James Joyce's notorious experimental novel Finnegans Wake has apparently sold out in its first print run of 8,000, <a href="http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2013-02/01/content_16192287.htm">the AP reports</a>.
Amazingly, the translation was only published for the first time on December 25.
While the success of the Tocqueville book seems to be due to the fact that the book was widely recommended by Chinese officials to Communist Party members (it deals with the French Revolution and the subsequent fallout), the success of Finnegans Wake seems to come down to something more simple: advertising.

The long book is renowned as one of the most difficult and experimental of Joyce's career. Dai Congrong, the translator, reportedly took 8 year to translate it. For the first two years she reportedly didn't even write a single word. "It was dull and depressing," <a href="http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/01/31/us-books-china-finneganswake-idINBRE90U0JN20130131">she told Reuters</a>.
The book — which contains many words that Joyce made up himself — runs to 755 pages in Chinese.

Chinese Home (Public Security) Minister Guo Shengkun is coming to India for Confidence Building Measure and will meet his Indian counterpart <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=rajnath+singh&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Rajnath Singh</a>. 
 
Both the sides will explore counter-terror cooperation against the growth and spread of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=islamic+state&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Islamic State</a>. 
 
The Chinese minister’s visit is viewed as an effort to soothe India’s wounds after China blocked its entry into the coveted Nuclear Supplier's Group. 
 Meanwhile, India and China will discuss global terror including the region in the backdrop of penetration of <keyword id="304620" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Islamic-State">Islamic State</keyword> in restive Xinjiang province of China, people familiar with the developments told ET. 
 
However, ET reported Singh will indulge in some plain speaking and urge Guo for ale Beijing's policy of opposing Delhi's move for a UN ban on Maulana Masood Azhar, JeM Chief and Zaki ur Rehman Lakhvi of Lashkar-e-Tayyiba -- both based in Pakistan, an all weather ally of Beijing. 
 
Earlier this year China once again vetoed India's move in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UN+Security+Council&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">UN Security Council</a> to ban Azhar. China was the only country that opposed notwithstanding support from rest 14 members of the council. 
 
They are also going to launch India-China "High Level Mechanism" for cooperation on internal security, according to government sources. 
Singh and Guo could also discuss issues like poverty, unemployment and underdevelopment that also fuel terror and share perspectives on de-radicalization measures.

Chinese minister to visit India for Confidence Building Measure, soothe NSG wounds

Russia interested "in cooperation with China on 5G," says Russian FM Sergei Lavrov

The Indo-US relations will become an important part of President-elect <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword>'s diplomacy to "suppress" <keyword id="1334" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="China">China</keyword>, but it will have limited impact on Beijing due New Delhi's resistance to a quasi-alliance" with Washington to retain an independent foreign policy, the Chinese state media said today. 
 
The opinion piece titled 'Trump may be cool to alliance with Delhi' said, "With the purpose of stabilising the external situation and straightening out problems at home, the Trump administration will seek an improving relationship with India," an article in the state-run Global Times said today. 
 
The commentary however said that India will not be able to assist the US much due to its own domestic problems, and US's enthusiasm thus to build a quasi-alliance will decrease. 
 
It further said that India "as a global power sticking to non-alignment diplomacy" will not set a goal of "allying with the US in suppressing China as the US hopes". 
 
"Therefore, there are unbridgeable differences between American intentions for developing a close relationship with India to balance China and India's concept of developing independent diplomacy toward the US and China," the article said. 
 When dealing with global challenges such as <keyword id="6361617" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Climate-Change">climate change</keyword>, nuclear proliferation and <keyword id="6358165" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="terrorism">terrorism</keyword>, the US may require India to make greater contributions to specific fields which only the US is concerned about, it said. 
 
"His will reduce India's trust in the US, and weaken the basis for deepening bilateral cooperation to the level the US looks forward to," it said. 
 Detailing limitations of <keyword id="460349" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-India-Relations">US-India relations</keyword> under the Trump administration, the article said it will have a "limited impact on China". 
 "The intensive <keyword id="136741" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-India">US-India</keyword> security cooperation during the Obama administration will be changed due to Trump's adjustment in diplomacy, easing off the pressure on China," it said.

Trump may move closer to India to balance China

The US last boycotted the Olympics during the 1980 Moscow Games, after the Soviet Union failed to meet then-president Jimmy Carter's deadline to pull its troops out of Afghanistan.

We have the Atlantic and the Pacific."The US also has friendly relations with its neighbors compared to China, said Dimon."We have not pissed off our neighbors. There may be a greater risk of incidents between the United States and Chinese navies in the South China Sea because the US military has been given more decision-making authority, a Chinese think tank warned on Tuesday. In a report, the think tank said the White House National Security Council had become less involved in US military activities in the disputed region, despite an increase in their frequency and intensity. "The US military will continue intensifying military operations in the <a href="https://www.scmp.com/topics/south-china-sea">South China Sea</a>, constantly exploring the grey zones between peace and conflict, and probing China's bottom line, which will inevitably push the threshold of small-scale armed conflict and war," according to the report released by Peking University's South China Sea Strategic Situation Probing Initiative. The US Navy has been conducting so-called freedom of navigation operations near Chinese-controlled islands and reefs since 2015, to challenge what Washington calls Beijing's excessive claims in the waterway. Four such operations were carried out under former president Barack Obama and there have been 11 so far under President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword>. "During the Obama era, such operations had more strategic significance so there was management from the higher level," said Hu Bo, co-author of the report and director of the Centre for Maritime Strategy Studies at Peking University. He said the Trump administration had delegated authority to the Indo-Pacific Command (PACOM), which would "surely increase the risks and hazards" in the region. "It's concerning that those key figures in the military decision-making chain are making these kind of remarks," Hu said. Meanwhile, there are also concerns that China's military could act with less restraint. Senior Colonel Zhou Bo, director of the Centre for Security Cooperation under the defence ministry, said last month that the Chinese navy could become less tolerant of US activities in the South China Sea. "As our capability grows, we are likely to take more actions to counter provocations," he said. Tensions rose in September when the USS Decatur was challenged by the Chinese destroyer Lanzhou during an operation near Gaven Reef, one of China's artificial islands, and a <a href="https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/geopolitics/article/2171596/exclusive-details-and-footage-emerge-near-collision-between">collision was narrowly avoided</a>. US, China 'at greater risk of military incidents' in South China Sea, Chinese think tank warns

The US on Friday criticised the Chinese Army for "escalating" the border tension with India and described the ruling Chinese Communist Party as a "rogue actor." Launching a scathing attack on the Chinese government, <keyword id="52233" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="us-secretary-of-state">US Secretary of State</keyword> <keyword id="3109665" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mike-Pompeo">Mike Pompeo</keyword> said the Chinese Communist Party wants to undo all the progress the free world has made through institutions like NATO and adopt a new set of rules and norms that accommodate Beijing. "The PLA (People's Liberation Army) has escalated border tensions with India, the world's most populous democracy. It's militarising the South China Sea and illegally claiming more territory there, threatening vital sea lanes," Pompeo said, a day after he expressed deep condolences to India on the death of 20 soldiers in violent clashes with Chinese troops at <keyword id="9241086" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Galwan-Valley">Galwan Valley</keyword> in Ladakh early in the week. In his virtual address on "Europe and the China Challenge" during the 2020 Copenhagen Democracy Summit on Friday, the top American diplomat said that for many years, the West, in an era of hope, believed they could change the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and improve the lives of the Chinese people along the way. "Along the way, the CCP took advantage of our goodwill while assuring us they wanted a cooperative relationship. As (former Chinese politician) Deng Xiaoping said 'Hide your strength, bide your time.' I've talked in other venues about why this happened. It's a complicated story. It's no one's fault," Pompeo said. Over decades, European and American companies have invested in China with great optimism. It outsourced supply chains to places like Shenzhen, opened education institutions for PLA-affiliated students and welcomed Chinese state-backed investment in their countries, he said. But the CPC decreed an end to freedom in Hong Kong, violating an UN-registered treaty and the rights of its citizens. This is one of many international treaties the party has violated, the secretary said. "General Secretary Xi Jinping has greenlighted a brutal campaign of repression against Chinese Muslims, a human rights violation on a scale we haven't seen since World War II. Now, the PLA has escalated border tensions with India," he said. The clash in Galwan Valley is the biggest confrontation between the two militaries after their 1967 clashes in Nathu La when India lost around 80 soldiers while the death toll on the Chinese side was over 300. The Chinese soldiers used stones, nail-studded sticks, iron rods and clubs in carrying out brutal attacks on Indian soldiers after they protested the erection of a surveillance post by China on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control in Galwan. "The CCP isn't just a rogue actor in its own neighbourhood. It lied about the coronavirus and let it spread to the rest of the world, while pressuring the WHO to assist its cover-up campaign. Hundreds of thousands of people have died, and the global economy has been decimated," Pompeo said. Even now, months into the pandemic, China has not provided access to live virus samples, facilities, or information about patients in December in Wuhan, he said. China is pushing disinformation and malicious cyber campaigns to undermine governments and to drive a wedge between the US and Europe, Pompeo alleged. "It's saddling developing nations with debt and dependency. It's strong-arming nations to do business with Huawei, an arm of the CCP's surveillance state. It's flagrantly attacking European sovereignty by buying up ports and critical infrastructure from Piraeus to Valencia," said the top American diplomat. "We must take off the golden blinders of economic ties and see that the China challenge isn't just at the gates; it's in every capital. Every investment from a Chinese state-owned enterprise should be viewed with suspicion," he said. "Europe faces a China challenge, just as the United States does, and just as our South American, African, Middle Eastern, and Asian friends do. As I said earlier this week to my EU counterparts, I know there's fear in Europe that the United States wants you to choose between us and China," he said. "It's the Chinese Communist Party that's forcing the choice. The party wants you to throw away the progress we in the free world have made, through NATO and other institutions – formal and informal – and adopt a new set of rules and norms that accommodate Beijing," Pompeo said. Prices for Brent crude oil <a href="https://oilprice.com/oil-price-charts">rallied past $75</a> for the first time in 2019 earlier this week amid <a href="https://in.reuters.com/article/global-oil/oil-dips-on-hope-opec-will-raise-output-but-market-remains-tense-idINKCN1S202V">a disruption in the supply of Russian oil </a>as well as production cuts by OPEC countries. To offset the reduction in global oil supplies due to sanctions on Iran, the US is pressuring Saudi Arabia to lift curbs but it is yet to be seen whether that will come to pass. Higher oil prices means a higher import bill for both India and China, a higher fiscal deficit and a hit to their currencies. Interestingly, the two countries are reportedly preparing for a second informal summit to discuss a number of issues such as border disputes, the Belt and Road Initiative, sources told <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-news/india-china-begin-to-prepare-for-2nd-informal-summit/story-MPuodW9FsrDHj7sEFbQizM.html">Hindustan Times</a>.
