On the flip side, 24,900/81,200 would be the key support zone for the traders. Below the same, the selling pressure is likely to accelerate. Big companies have bought a trillion dollars worth of their own shares, he noted, shrinking the equity supply and pushing per-share values higher."So you shrink the denominator because they're buying back a bunch of their stock, and there's no sellers," Rieder said.He sees this more than offsetting any valuation pressures, even with one S&amp;P 500 adjusted-earnings ratio close to the highest it's been in the last century, according to new research from Deutsche Bank.And although Rieder sees current valuations as stretched, he added that market multiples could return to reasonable levels if earnings rise significantly higher."People want — myself included — want the multiple lower. But boy, it's pretty hard," he said. "If there's no egregious piece of news, geopolitical, et cetera, the natural migration is to higher prices."To be sure, Rieder himself has <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-us-debt-levels-government-borrowing-treasury-blackrock-rick-rieder-2024-11">previously noted impending risks</a>, previously forecasting that US debt could lead to a market shakeup. But this won't be an immediate threat."I think markets tend to react to the shark closest to the boat," Rieder said last week. "The shark on the debt dynamic is not going to be next to the boat in January or February, but it is going to get next to the boat sometime. I don't know if it's the latter part of 2025 or the beginning of 2026 unless they address the size of the spending dynamics, the amount of debt we're issuing, and, then obviously, inflation relative to that."

He was also keeping an eye on financial markets to see if they were making directional moves.Over in London, Richard Kelly, the head of global strategy at TD Securities, was on his firm's trading floor, busy answering endless client questions on 'What about this' and 'What about that'-type scenarios."As much as we all tried to think ahead of what the different policies would be, there are always a lot more questions that come up on the day, and they all have to be much more concrete," Kelly said. "So it's just been a whirlwind."Former President <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/election-results-trump-harris-presidential-election-2024-11">Donald Trump's victory</a> over Vice President Kamala Harris has been called for Tuesday's election, but Wall Street is still waiting on one more key answer: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/congress-balance-of-power-results-competitive-republicans-democrats-2024-11">Will Republicans take the House</a>, too? It seems increasingly likely. Yet, the result would be based on a handful of seats."Technically, we don't need to know until the first half of December legally, and these things are so close in terms of the margin of error," Kelly said. "There's some of these races where literally hundreds of ballots is the differential of Republican versus Democrat. So it's not going to be today."The small tilt in the House makes a big difference because a handful of seats are enough to create some friction on Trump policies, Kelly noted.<h2 id="e4827f7a-5ee5-4a62-aa3b-da6a8ce8b3ef">Stocks</h2>Sector rotations among stocks are slightly muddy because the overall <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/us-election-trump-stock-rally-rise-sp500-outlook-regulation-mergers-2024-11">market is up so much that everything rallied</a> with the broad market, Pappalardo said. But one noteworthy sector is financials, which performed better than the overall market into Wednesday's early trading hours. It's unsurprising since the Republicans campaigned on policies favorable to banks and financial stocks, including decreased regulation. The steepening yield curve is also positive for banks as it boosts their profit margins since they borrow on the front-end yield and lend at the back-end yield, he added.Technology is another sector the market is viewing favorably: Tech companies have been creating a lot of profit, so Trump's promised corporate tax cuts will be quite beneficial, Pappalardo said.Meanwhile, the utilities sector lagged the broader market the most as we moved into Wednesday's early trading hours. Investors moving away from defensives toward cyclicals is likely a sign that investors believe the economy is positioned for growth, Pappalardo noted.While the rallies are positive for stocks, looking ahead, Pappalardo expects things to return to normality. In other words, investors will focus on traditional fundamentals like corporate earnings and interest rate policy.<h2 id="5e50dfbb-c80b-4dee-8272-69eff4f2145f">Bonds</h2>Wednesday was a long day for Gennadiy Goldberg, the head of US rates strategy at TD Securities. He stayed up past midnight watching the yield move before passing the baton off to his colleagues in London."Once the polls started to close, the market already started to move," Goldberg said. "It took the market very little time to start penciling in higher odds of the Trump victory."The swift and strong Republican win pushed the 10-year yield up from around 4.3% to around 4.45%.The <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-a-bond#:~:text=Bonds%20are%20loans%20that%20investors,the%20principal%20investment%20at%20maturity.">bond market</a> was expressing signs of nervousness. This sector of the market is worried about who's going to pay the bill for potentially higher budget deficits. The result is a pricing-in of higher debt premiums, Goldberg said.Additionally, aggressive immigration and tariff policies could be inflationary. And if it looks like inflation pressures are either reaccelerating or just stubbornly high, it could leave the Fed nervous about cutting rates further, Goldberg said.Kelly added that the 10-year could still move higher to 4.75%, and that's where he thinks the market could get more comfortable buying.<h2 id="b628f761-842f-464c-a039-7d296873c4e9">Currencies</h2>Jayati Bharadwaj, a global FX strategist at TD Securities, was at home in front of multiple screens until about 1 a.m. as she watched <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-forex">currencies move</a> amid the strong Trump lead. Initially, she expected the results to take a few days to become clear, but she was surprised by how quickly the outcome became evident. Currency markets also reacted swiftly against the backdrop of a strengthening dollar."The Chinese renminbi, the Mexican peso, and the euro were hit particularly hard because once markets saw the election results being called, they had to start pricing in the threat of tariffs," Bharadwaj said.She expects the euro to trade even weaker relative to the dollar once Trump takes office. Right now, it's trading at $1.07; expect it to move to $1.05, she said. If the Republicans take the House, then the euro could drop below $1.05, she added.Kelly added that China has been under the microscope since Trump talked about 60% tariffs on its imports. Other countries could face 10% tariffs across the board. So, if you're highly leveraged to trade, like Europe or the UK, it could be very negative for the euro and pound. He noted that it could also be negative on the currencies of Canada and Mexico, depending on how USMCA members will be impacted.On the flip side, the yen could weaken less than other currencies relative to the US dollar. The Bank of Japan may return to rate hikes over the next few months after it had paused, Kelly said. This means watch out for further unwinding in the yen carry trade. Therefore, the next question investors have to ask is: how many long equity positions have been funded at very low Japanese rates, Kelly said.For this reason, Bharadwaj cautions traders about jumping back into any carry trades because there will be a lot of currency volatility.<h2 id="2b454727-3f51-473d-b815-35fcf1e90886">Gold</h2>One surprise is that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/commodities/gold-price">gold hasn't weakened</a> as much as expected, Kelly said. As the dollar strengthened, he anticipated a more significant pullback. Given the uncertainty and volatility that took place the day after the elections, it might be too soon as investors digest results. However, he anticipates further weakening in gold, which is down 2% from Election Day.

After steady progress, we might be leveling off, but the Fed has made progress toward their target," said Scott Helfstein, Global X head of investment strategy. "There is no reason to believe that one month of data will change the Fed strategy, and a 25 bp cut in December remains the base case."Still, the market indicates a 37.9% chance that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates steady next month. Trump's policies are expected to have a potentially inflationary impact, and the market is debating whether interest rates will remain higher for longer as the Fed is again forced to confront rising prices."Inflation is not tamed," Apollo's co-president Scott Kleinman told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2024-11-12/apollo-s-scott-kleinman-says-inflation-is-not-tamed-video">Bloomberg TV</a>. "The Fed can say what it wants. <ul class="summary-list"><li>David Kostin is seeing similarities to the dot-com bubble as "superstar" firms boost the market.</li><li>Record-high market concentration will lead to a decade of weak returns, the strategist said.</li></ul>David Kostin is no stranger to the ups and downs of the stock market.The Goldman Sachs chief US equity strategist has seen multiple economic boom-bust cycles during his more than 35 years on Wall Street. And right now, Kostin sees two striking similarities between today's market and the dot-com bubble — conditions that could lead to a decade of lackluster returns for the S&amp;P 500 just as they did after 2000, he told Business Insider in an exclusive interview.First, market concentration is at an all-time high, meaning that the performance of the S&amp;P 500 is disproportionately driven by just a few stocks. This is due to the rise of what Kostin calls "superstar" firms with economies of scale, such as the Big Tech companies whose valuations have spiked this year thanks to the development of AI.Today, the 10 largest stocks in the S&amp;P 500 make up 36% of the entire index by market capitalization."We're at a level of concentration in the US market today that we haven't really seen since the tech bubble. A stock with a P/E ratio of 31 has an earnings yield of 3.22%, meaning that every dollar invested in the stock would generate earnings per share of 3.2 cents. A stock with P/E ratio of 19 has an earnings yield of 5.26%, meaning that investors are receiving more earnings for every dollar they put in.This gap between the top S&amp;P 500 performers and the rest of the index hasn't occurred since the dot-com bubble."The valuation of the largest stocks in the market have a negative risk premium to bonds, and that has not happened for 20 years," Kostin added.That means the top 10 stocks in the index actually have a negative return in excess of the risk-free <a target="_blank" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/bonds">10-year Treasury</a> yields. The 10-year has a nominal yield of 4.28% compared to the top 10's 3.22%, which is approximately a 1% negative risk premium.<h2 id="3daaf9d0-47d8-48dc-b7f5-64d833e2a83c">The next decade</h2>The ultra-high concentrations in the market today happened over several years, so Kostin isn't expecting the market to broaden overnight. But the current disjunction simply isn't sustainable for the long term, he said. Higher concentration is typically associated with increased volatility in the near term and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-crash-why-sp500-decade-weak-returns-goldman-jpmorgan-2024-11">lower returns</a> over long time horizons.That's why Kostin predicts that the S&amp;P 500 will generate a 3% annualized nominal total return through 2034 — well below the index's long-term average of 11%."The S&amp;P 500 has roughly a 72% probability of trailing bonds and a 33% likelihood of lagging inflation through 2034," Kostin and his team wrote in a recent note.<div type="image" title="Goldman Sachs is predicting a decade of low returns." height="442" width="701" msid="114979383" hostid="261" sizebytes="27106"></div>Superstar firms propelled the S&amp;P 500 to new highs in 2024, but maintaining that level of growth in the future will be difficult, especially when valuations are already so elevated, according to Kostin."The expectation of revenue growth for these companies is 20%, and the stocks trade at high multiples reflecting that growth rate. So the risk is ultimately, can the companies deliver on these extremely high levels?" Kostin said. "The evidence is strongly in support of the fact that growth rates for high revenue growth companies tend to fade," he added.Today's valuations price in double-digit growth, but that's not a realistic outcome, in Kostin's view. When sales and earnings growth for the biggest companies eventually cool, these valuations will come down, and the overall index will decelerate as well.Kostin pointed to companies like Intel, Microsoft, and Cisco, which saw incredible runups as investors priced in aggressive revenue expectations during the dot-com heyday. When these companies failed to meet these lofty expectations, valuation multiples compressed significantly.Although Kostin is predicting a decade of lower-than-average growth for the S&amp;P 500, he's still optimistic about the overall state of the economy as the unemployment rate is holding steady at 4.1% and the US consumer is strong.While the overall market is shaping up to see lower-than-expected returns for the next decade, that doesn't mean there aren't pockets of opportunity for investors to seek <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-beat-stock-market-returns-next-decade-goldman-sachs-2024-10">higher returns</a>. As the gap between the largest stocks and the rest of the market subsides going forward, the typical stock is positioned to perform better than the current market leaders.For that reason, Kostin is expecting the S&amp;P 500 equal-weight SPW index to outperform the market-cap-weighted S&amp;P 500.Kostin also identified mid-cap stocks as a big beneficiary of a broadening market. Stocks loved it, with China's CSI 300 index soaring 16% for its best week since 2008.But the bond market seemed less convinced by the attempted stimulus, with the 30-year government bond yield falling the next day to a level close to its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-09-26/china-bonds-flash-japanification-warning-despite-stimulus-plan?sref=LspfQlRv">lowest since 2005</a>. In theory, if fixed-income investors had been placated, they would've left behind the relative safety of bonds, pushing yields higher. Instead the opposite happened.The same dynamic played out on Monday, following more pointed efforts from China to address a flagging property market. Three of the nation's largest cities loosened rules for homebuyers, while the People's Bank of China also moved to lower mortgage rates.The moves sent stock soaring once again, with the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-boost-economy-stock-market-bazooka-stimulus-sentiment-rally-pboc-2024-9">CSI 300 climbing 8.5%</a> for its best day since 2008. And once again, bond yields on 30-year government debt slipped 8 basis points to 2.36%. While that's above the multi-year low of 2.14% seen last week, it's still a surprising directional move.Investors may be reacting to the widely held view that — despite the size and scope of China's stimulus moves — they still might not be enough. The country is plagued by deflation, low consumption, and a real-estate debt crisis. While added liquidity may bolster confidence in the equity market, analysts say it does little to repair core issues. Instead, China should <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/china-economy-stimulus-stock-market-consumer-deflation-outlook-real-estate-2024-9">spend more on its consumers</a>."Net supply of government bonds went up significantly in August to CNY1.85tn, driven by larger issuances from both the central and local governments," Bank of America wrote in mid-September. Elevated rates put the bond market back on investors' minds, while the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/index/s&amp;p_500">S&amp;P 500</a> had a solid 26% total return. But depending on who you ask, the future may not be as bright.Yields will be less attractive as the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/interest-rate-cuts-federal-reserve-election-jerome-powell-inflation-jobs-2024-11#:~:text=The%20Fed%20cut%20interest%20rates,country%20recovered%20from%20the%20pandemic.">Fed begins its rate cuts</a> for this cycle. Sounds gloomy, but for bond traders like Mark Rieder, who has over two decades of experience in the sector, it could be an opportunity to dig for bargains in corporate credit.Generating alpha for a credit trader could mean beating a peer, a Bloomberg fixed income index that matches the category of bonds traded, or simply remaining in positive territory in terms of total returns when the market is down, Rieder told Business Insider."Over the past 10 years, when interest rates were very low, it was not an exciting time to be a credit analyst and a portfolio manager," Rieder said. "But it's much more interesting today, and I'm really excited about that."However, active debt investing takes a good level of skill and consistent effort to make the right credit selection, according to his new book, "Reminiscences of a Bond Operator." Like the stock-picking process, following the crowd or consensus won't result in alpha. A credit trader must conduct the same level of fundamental analysis and dig into a company's balance sheet, earnings calls, 10Qs, and 10Ks, among other things, to determine valuation."I've always believed that a good credit analyst is also a really good equity analyst because you really need to understand the capital structure of the companies that you're evaluating and all of their different needs," Rieder said. "Most companies want to have their stock price go up, and so as a credit analyst, you need to understand that so that you can understand what their motivations are."It's especially important now, as the credit space faces its own set of challenges. Like the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/are-we-in-a-recession">business cycle</a>, credit has its booms and busts based on macro conditions and supply and demand. In a strong economic environment, corporate cash flows rise, and companies increase borrowing with favorable lending terms. But when times are tight, companies deleverage until their debt is less than their cash flow. Once that equilibrium is satisfied, more borrowing ensues, according to his book.Rieder said credit is in the boom part of the cycle. This might sound surprising, considering debt has been expensive for the better part of the last two years. But most companies were locked into low yields before rates rose, he noted. As debt turnover increases, investors need to be cautious."There's a lag impact on the increase in rates. Most companies borrow for long periods of time, five years, 10 years," Rieder said. "A lot of companies issued debt when interest rates were very low. They're now only starting to refinance that low-coupon debt. That, in turn, is what causes an impact."He doesn't expect that the Fed's cutting cycle will mitigate the crunch. The central bank can impact front-end yields, but the back end is driven by additional considerations, he noted. The 10-year rose to 4.3% shortly after the first rate cut of September, a signal that <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-election-forecast-most-accurate-economist-predicts-outcome-economic-impact-2024-10">investors were looking ahead</a> at other economic risk factors, including concerns over the government's ballooning deficit, he added. Additionally, economic conditions such as elevated credit card debt pose concerns for future corporate profits.<h2 id="101d0bc7-10c7-46f9-a758-eea160588283">Trading credit</h2>Right now, investment-grade credit spreads are tight. The yields in corporate bonds aren't much higher than in government bonds, meaning less compensation for more risk. But if we move from the boom to the bust phase, credit spreads could widen, and that could create opportunities in the credit space, he said.While spreads are tight, he prefers front-end yield or pairing trades with cheap optionality. The cost of shorting a credit index like the CDX Investment Grade 5-Year Index, a credit-default-swap index that tracks the credit risk of large US investment-grade companies, is low. And since spreads are trading at historically tight levels, it's less likely to get much lower, which could limit potential losses, he said. This position can then be paired with a trade expected to perform positively.An example he provides of a market-neutral pair trade could look like buying a corporate bond in a sector with structural tailwinds, such as a natural gas producer set to benefit from increased demand and rising energy prices, or airplane lessors who benefit from higher lease rates due to a tight aircraft supply — a situation that's unlikely to ease in the near term because of production challenges faced by manufacturers. Then, take a short position in an interest-rate future to hedge against the bond's interest-rate risk."This trade works if natural gas prices remain stable or rise, leading the energy bond to outperform the overall corporate bond market," Rieder said. "It's an excellent opportunity to capitalize on the current tight credit spread conditions and complacency in the overall credit market."Having liquidity can also give you an upper hand. As spreads widen, investors may be forced into selling higher-quality credit because they can't offload the lower-quality ones, he said."There are huge opportunities in credit if you remain liquid during dislocations," Rieder said. "Other investors are going to be looking for liquidity. They can't sell what they want to, so they sell what they can, and that can lead to opportunities to buy cheap assets."

Meanwhile, high-yield bonds should deliver a 6.1% gain in the long term, compared to 6.5% last year and 6.8% two years ago.After accounting for inflation, JPMAM expects the standard 60-40 portfolio to return less than 5% in the long term, and the same is true of large-cap stocks and bonds. While such gains may be satisfactory for some, it would take over 16 years for an investor to double their money.Those looking for a more compelling investment opportunity should consider real estate, according to JPMAM. Unlike stocks and bonds, the firm's projected returns for that asset class are steadily rising, from 5.7% two years ago to 7.5% in late 2023 to 8.1% this year.US core real estate is projected to yield close to 6%, up from just over 4% a few years ago and well above the 10-year's yield of 4.2%. Real estate isn't cheap based on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.investopedia.com/terms/c/capitalizationrate.asp">capitalization rates</a>, which measure how much money a property generates relative to its market value, but JPMAM believes the asset class is an exceptional value relative to other yield-generating investments.<div type="image" title="Real estate vs 10-year yield" height="924" width="1032" msid="114505221" hostid="261" sizebytes="34048"></div>"If you were to look at this on a spread basis, the cap-rates spread would tell you that real estate looks a little bit expensive," said David Lebovitz, a global market strategist for JPMAM, at the conference. "But if you look at the all-in yield and think of that as your valuation and your starting point, we're looking at a generational opportunity."Monica Issar, JPMorgan Private Bank's global head of multi-asset and portfolio solutions, echoed that sentiment."This is absolutely the largest generational opportunity to invest in real estate in a long time," Issar said at the conference.Commercial real estate looks especially compelling, Issar said. Unlike residential real estate, which has held up well in recent years — as evidenced by <a target="_blank" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/MSPUS">remarkably resilient home prices</a> despite <a target="_blank" href="https://www.freddiemac.com/pmms">still-elevated mortgage rates</a> — office buildings have struggled to regain their value since the pandemic ushered in a new era of remote work for millions of Americans.As companies reduced their physical presence or eschewed offices altogether, demand for commercial spaces has taken a massive hit. However, Issar thinks that risk is reflected in prices."All we've been reading about and all we've been seeing is price declines and discussions about empty buildings," Issar said. "This is a time for investors to step in, move into attractive pricing, move into asset classes like non-core real estate."Investors can bet on a commercial real estate rebound by working with <a target="_blank" href="https://am.jpmorgan.com/us/en/asset-management/institutional/investment-strategies/alternatives/real-estate/">JPMAM's team</a>, or on their own through publicly traded real estate investment trusts (REITs). JPMAM didn't outline any specific investments to make, but Issar threw out a few ideas to help investors brainstorm."Think of multifamily housing; think of student housing around campuses; think of cell towers and data centers," Issar said. "That is the modernization of the new direct real estate that is going to be really attractive for investors in the future."
