There have, honestly, been several instances when <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> has copied, or as we like to call it, got inspired from its American counterpart. However, there have been a few incidents when <keyword id="2370" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="hollywood">Hollywood</keyword> ran out of ideas and looked at its distant cousin on the other side of the world for some suggestions. However, unlike us, they don’t go to the length of copying the entire plot. Instead, they are the ones who get ‘inspired’ in real sense, and sometimes, make official remakes of Hindi movies.

When Hollywood got inspired from Bollywood

To think that <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> productions are assembly line copies of <keyword id="2370" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="hollywood">Hollywood</keyword> productions or a direct ‘lift’ from other Indian/foreign languages would be a little unfair. Writer Anna Quilden once famously said: “Every story has already been told. Once you've read Anna Karenina, Bleak House, The Sound and the Fury, To Kill a Mockingbird and A Wrinkle in Time, you understand that there is really no reason to ever write another novel. Except that each writer brings to the table, if she will let herself, something that no one else in the history of time has ever had." 
 
Bollywood carries much weight in itself. The film industry, concentrated in Mumbai aka Bombay, is among the busiest, ambitious, daring, most creative field that is also the sole source of bread and butter for millions of people in the magical city. 
 
Post-independence was the most creative period for Bollywood, which saw the most indigenous films being made, showcasing the emerging India. 
 
When it came to film buffs, the only way to access foreign films were through fests organised by film clubs or small groups that took film studies seriously. Else, it was a hush-hush affair that had to be done away from the watchful eyes of the elders. 
 
Thanks to globalisation and access to many things that were seen as ‘taboo,’ Bollywood has long cleansed itself of the sinful image it carried. And people are flocking theatres like never before. 
 
Bollywood fans are now well-informed audiences who have access to international film festivals. And this also gives rise to the yearning in them that their favourite film industry should also do some ‘fine’ productions at par with Hollywood. 
 
What happens when a Bollywood director gets ‘inspired’ by a film or feels the script can well-depict the life in a village in India or that of a family in any Indian city? 
 
Then, the art of plagiarism comes into the picture: South Korean movie I Saw the Devil turned into <keyword id="2177024" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ek-Villain">Ek Villain</keyword>, Out of Time into <keyword id="38594" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Zeher">Zeher</keyword> and <keyword id="13542" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="Murder">Murder</keyword> could be traced to Korean film Chaser. 
 
Even when controversies arose, matters were settled amicably through ‘out of court’ settlements, where both parties wished for each other’s good! 
 
You can call it anything you want: unethical, immoral or illegal. But art knows no boundaries. A line in a story can unleash a series of images that can turn into a story altogether.

Bollywood Doesn’t Plagiarise; Unless It’s An ‘Inspiration’

<ul><li><keyword id="816630" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Grand-Theft-Auto-V">Grand Theft Auto V</keyword> has sold 90 million units collecting $6 billion. </li><li>The game is available across five different platforms - PS2, PS3, PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360. </li><li>It has also earned more revenue than iconic <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> movies like DDLJ. </li><li>There are more versions of the game than of the Fast and Furious movie. </li></ul>What could be more grand for Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) than beating out all of Bollywood with their sales? The game has everything from torture to plane hopping stunts and cheekily offensive terms to the R-rated action. Having been in the market since 2013, Rockstar Games has sold around 90 million copies of the game worldwide according to <a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/this-violent-videogame-has-made-more-money-than-any-movie-ever-2018-04-06">Marketwatch</a>. Since the game pans across all the platforms, the sales account for all the versions including PS3, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. Not only has GTA V seen massive sales, but it has amassed approximately $6 billion in revenue. The number is impressive enough on it’s own but when you compare it to the revenue generated by our cinematic universe, it really puts things in perspective. GTA V came out in 2013, when Bollywood was releasing movies like <keyword id="227940" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chennai-Express">Chennai Express</keyword>, Race 2, and Kai Po Che. These were the highest grossing movies that year but even then, Chennai Express, which was ahead of the rest, only managed to generate $67 million in revenue. Even Rohit Shetty’s stunts could not match up to being able fly one plane into another. It’s invariable in the long run as well if you analyse the highest grossing movies in Bollywood overall. Including titles like <keyword id="6358210" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dangal">Dangal</keyword>, <keyword id="3345286" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="secret-superstar">Secret Superstar</keyword>, <keyword id="2411684" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bajrangi-Bhaijaan">Bajrangi Bhaijaan</keyword> and PK, the most they’ve been able to earn is $291 million. Aamir Khan can have all the screen presence in the world but, GTA V’s story pulls you into its darkly comic world. And here’s some more perspective, even evergreen content like Dilwaale Dulhania Le Jayenge and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun have fallen short at around $52 million. What really adds context to the $6 billion dollars generated by GTA V is the fact that despite their popularity and production value, even Hollywood movies don’t measure up. Epic features like Star Wars and Gone with the Wind get left in the dust at $3 billion. The reality of the situation is that GTA has more versions to its name than the Fast and Furious movies, and they’ve been building their fanbase for a long time now. The game operates on the edge of being plausible. But, no matter, the main characters remain relatable through and through. In all honesty, the gaming industry has always been bigger than both Hollywood and Bollywood. Any all-rounding game not only has direction, a narrative, originality and amazing stunts but also something that the film industry can’t provide - they give you a chance be a part of the story.

Imagine watching a movie on the computer. The opening credits roll. There is a slight shakiness, a few “zoom ins” or “zoom outs” and the texture of the print is quite grainy, but eventually the monitor seems to fit in the entire frame of the movie screen. Welcome to the world of 'cam print' movies. It's prevalent all over the world, but in India, a film-crazy nation, it takes on a whole new persona of its own. 
 
In India, the Hindi and the Tamil movie industry have hegemony over the rest when it comes to numbers. The fact that these industries also churn out a massive number of movies every year, most of which are targeted to lower middle class income groups, or as the producers like to call it, the masses, make the piracy scene even more intriguing. Here's how – India does not make too many films that are visual extravaganzas. By that I mean, a movie that releases on a Friday and if it's not an Interstellar or an <keyword id="44111" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Avatar">Avatar</keyword>, won't really compel people to wait and get tickets a week later. They'd want to “check it out” as soon as a cam print is released. This way, they save a whole lot of money, which is a huge deal here. 
 
But here's the thing – with the rise of the multiplex culture in the country and a growing young earning class, most of the urban youth now has access to most films. About 4-5 years ago, the scene was different. Only the metros would get access to the blockbusters while tier-II and tier-III towns would usually have to wait three or six months before they could get any chances to screen the films. And this resulted in a higher demand for pirated copies. The main reason was that back then they used physical prints while today the theaters mainly use digital prints which cost about 1/5th of their reel counterparts. 
 So, yes, it is true that the frequency of <keyword id="77845" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="camcorder">camcorder</keyword> piracy in India has gone down. There has been a 16% drop in the entire Asia Pacific region from last year. In India, as opposed to 44 cases of camcorder piracy, there were 40 this year. One of the major breakthroughs this year was the arrest and subsequent shutdown of piracy teams like Yamraaj and NickkkDoN, both from Indore. It is interesting to know that Indore is a tier-II town, a place where the culture of camcorder piracy is not new. It's just that earlier they were mostly pirating Indian films, but now, with the arrival of multiplexes, they are pirating Hollywood films too. 
 How seriously is the camcorder piracy movement hurting the coffers of the film studios? As it turns out, and this is quite interesting, it's mainly the two extreme ends of the movie budget spectrum that are hurting the most. Small-time <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood">Bollywood</keyword> filmmakers and some known names in the regional cinema business are struggling against it because unlike studios behind mainstream Bollywood titles, they are not exactly in a position to dictate terms with the distributors. Telugu film Manam was one of the most pirated Indian films this year. The studio behind it along with law enforcement officials have been trying to track websites which are streaming camcorder prints of the film. And on the other end, Hollywood films, for which India is one of the biggest international markets, also lose big money due to camcorder piracy. But they lose more money when they actually release blu-ray prints, because that's when the torrent sites come into play, almost annihilating the home-video business for these films. But that's a whole other story. 
 
In the middle of this cat and mouse game, only mainstream Bollywood films seem to not get too affected by the camcorder piracy hoopla. That's mainly because their approach to movie making is pretty much like the Blitzkreig – put some heavy money in to cast stars who draw in the crowds, price the tickets for the weekends (including the opening one) relatively high, and recover almost half of the money in the first three days, even before the verdict on the quality of the movie is out far and wide. 
 
For now, the biggest winner in India (if the fight against camcorder piracy is won) will be regional cinema studios and small time indie filmmakers—because unlike mainstream Bollywood or international studios, they have much to lose from pirates.
