It has been edited for length and clarity.In 2014, when I was 36, my 3-year-old son was crawling over me and accidentally kicked me in the chest. It really hurt, and that's when I discovered a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/breast-cancer-signs-symptoms-lump-nipple-discharge-pain-2022-9">lump on my left breast</a>.At this point, I was between jobs and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-healthcare-and-insurance-work-around-the-world-2017-7">didn't have healthcare</a>. I went through the process of applying for healthcare under the Affordable Health Care Act, but it took six months for me to eventually get my diagnosis of stage one triple negative ductal invasive carcinoma with a hereditary BRCA 1 mutation.<h2 id="6a45d618-cfb4-4e15-9afc-5eaf2425e8c2">Cancer affected my sex life</h2>I was at my new job when my doctor called to tell me the news. I remember being shocked. I crumpled to the floor and just sat on the carpet crying. All I could think about was the worst-case scenarios. I thought about all the people I knew who had <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/more-young-women-getting-breast-cancer-two-potential-reasons-2024-10">died from breast cancer</a>. Would I see my son grow up? How would my husband raise him on his own?That <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/mental-health/vicarious-trauma">initial trauma</a> of learning I had cancer dominated my life. I was so scared and stressed all the time. Sex was definitely not on the table.When it came time for my <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/double-mastectomy-lessons-from-surgery-healing-time-2024-2">double mastectomy</a>, I opted for reconstruction after they removed my breasts and assured me the implants would be safe. Also, at the time, the options offered were only about how I would recreate breast mounds.I felt a deep grief every time I looked down at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/breast-cancer-survivors-racing-to-get-surgery-before-insurance-change-2023-3">my chest after the reconstruction</a>. It was a reminder of this trauma. I didn't feel sexy at all.<h2 id="7c0a08c5-3f1c-4821-93d8-2e28cc5db129">We cuddled and didn't talk about cancer at night</h2>Immediately after the surgery, I started a round of IVF to freeze my eggs as I was told I would lose my fertility going through chemotherapy. As long as I had a uterus, even if my ovaries were removed, I could carry a baby, or someone could be a surrogate for us.When chemotherapy started, I lost all my hair and my period. I felt incredibly weak, nauseous, and tired.Even though I often didn't want to be intimate with my husband, I knew if you don't use it, you lose it. I knew how important intimacy, not just sex, was for our relationship. So many couples don't make it through a cancer diagnosis and treatment.We started gently, just with a little cuddling. We set a rule about not talking about cancer late into the evening – I needed to shut off that conversation so I wasn't triggered.I rarely felt sexy during these months, which had a huge impact on my confidence during sex. While lovemaking didn't stop during chemotherapy, it was definitely less vigorous and less often. Our sex life was hanging on by a thread.<h2 id="b51fbb04-172b-4a87-8569-5faa127458de">I had to become intentional about feeling like myself again</h2>Two years after my mastectomy, I decided to get a beautiful tattoo over my implants. I went from feeling disfigured to rare and exotic. There was no one in the world like me. During intimacy, I could look down at myself and not feel horrified or get lost in the trauma all over again.My <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/breast-implants-made-me-sick-i-had-them-removed-2022-5">breast implants were increasingly giving me pain</a>, so I went back to my original breast surgeon and asked him if he could remove the implants and do an aesthetic flat closure in place of the implants. He turned to my husband to ask how he would feel about it and told me he would only perform the surgery for someone with body dysmorphia.I dissociated, in shock, that he wouldn't consider my pain and discomfort. I found another doctor who did the surgery for me. I was surprised at how much freedom and comfort I felt being flat-chested.For years, my desire and sex life had been like a stalled car. But now, I feel like my engine is revving. I would never compare my sex life pre-cancer to now. It would rob me of the joy of where I am now. I have worked too hard to get here and won't get stuck grieving what intimacy used to look like.I'm still here, and my marriage is strong. And I'm so grateful.

However, even in my 40s, I wasn't exactly sure how to define "normal."I was convinced I was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/perimenopause-felt-like-going-through-puberty-again-2024-10">going through perimenopause</a>, but my hormonal levels said otherwise. Of course, we couldn't let the boys know we were learning about menstruation. I'd been having my period for decades, and I knew this wasn't "normal" bleeding. Maybe it was perimenopause, but I was ready to push for some answers. On a particularly terrible morning, I called the nurse line at my local clinic, answered a lengthy list of personal questions, and was scheduled to see my primary care provider. More bloodwork and a pap smear later, my doctor ordered an ultrasound.And then we had an answer (two of them, actually): a uterine fibroid and an endometrial polyp. Reading a list of symptoms — bleeding between periods, pelvic pain, longer periods — felt like reading a page of my journal for the last few years.I've since learned that many women deal with fibroids throughout their lives — up to<a target="_blank" href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/uterine-fibroids#:~:text=An%20estimated%2020%25%20to%2050,so%20they%20are%20often%20undiagnosed."> 77% of women in their childbearing years</a> — many of whom I knew in my real life. We were just too busy talking about perimenopause to discuss these other issues.I followed up with a specialist who talked through my options, and after years of suffering, I was ready for a solution.On the same day as my 45th birthday, I had a dilation and curettage procedure to biopsy my endometrium and remove the polyp.For a woman who has never been pregnant or birthed a baby, walking into the procedure room was jarring. However, the medical assistant and doctor were reassuring and calming throughout the process. I practiced some deep breathing during the painful parts and said a short prayer that the biopsy was benign.Later that night, I celebrated my birthday with a family dinner, and my birthday celebration stretched into a week later when I received the welcome news from my biopsy — benign.Other perimenopausal symptoms might be approaching, but I'm no longer afraid to talk about them or seek answers when something feels off. After living in this body for 45 years, it's time I start trusting it.

"Being overweight is hard," it says. "Losing weight is hard," it says. Then, underneath, it says, "Choose your hard." It's empowering because it lets you know it's your choice whether to stay heavy or make every effort to get healthy and feel better. I'm just 12 pounds off my goal of 218 pounds — which means I will have lost 285 pounds since beginning my journey in July 2021 — and I'm determined to reach that number on the scale. It's been the toughest battle of my life. But I know that it is literally saving my life. <h2>I've always been big</h2>I've always been a big person. I was a 10-pound baby and 23.5 inches long. I stopped growing at 6ft 2in tall — the same height as my dad. It runs in the family. One of my sons is 6ft 5in. But I'm overweight because I always eat my feelings. Whenever I felt emotional — if something was wrong and I was unable to deal with it — I'd reach for something to eat. My parents were concerned about my size when I was a child. They <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pediatrician-mom-parenting-advice-basics-essentials-2024-1">took me to the pediatrician</a> for advice. I felt confused in the doctor's office when I was in elementary school because they mentioned words like diabetes. We tried to work on things like portion control, but it wasn't easy. We would eat inexpensive things like pasta in a big dish in the center of the table. <h2>I was a yo-yo dieter</h2>Carbohydrates were not good for me, but I hated being singled out as the one who wasn't supposed to take as much as the others. Then, when I was 10, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ive-been-through-divorce-on-both-ends-2023-4">my parents got divorced</a>. It was an emotional upheaval. The summer between fifth and sixth grade, I gained probably 35 to 40 pounds. Other kids said some nasty things to me, especially in middle school. But I was 6ft tall by 12 and able to defend myself physically. If there were a problem, I'd say, "No, you're not going to do that to me." Instead, I internalized my pain. I gave birth to my first child at 20 after putting on a lot of weight during the pregnancy. The same thing happened with my other two kids. Diets have come and gone over the years. They generally involve calorie counting and walking. I once lost over 110 pounds and kept it off for six years, but whenever something went wrong in my life, I'd put it back on. <h2>I was shocked when I registered 500 pounds on the scale</h2>I couldn't move the way I felt like I should be able to move and not be uncomfortable. I'd go up and down the stairs at work and get winded. Things came to a head in July 2021 when I saw my doctor for <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/live-entertainment-is-back-with-no-masks-or-social-distancing-2021-9">the first time since COVID-19</a>. I stepped on the scale and felt mortified. I was 499.9 pounds. "How the heck did this happen?" I thought. I didn't cry but wanted to crawl into a hole somewhere. I was <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/diabetes-risk-other-health-condition-complication-study-2022-3">diagnosed with type 2 diabetes </a>and prescribed medication to lower my blood sugar. I managed to lose 84 pounds before qualifying for an appointment at a weight management clinic in March 2022. The main reason I lost that initial weight was dental work. My teeth were bad from so many years of abuse and loss of enamel. I got dentures, which allowed me to chew healthy, crunchy food like apples. But weight management opened up everything for me. They said I was a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/traveled-to-mexico-for-gastric-bypass-surgery-results-2023-4">good candidate for stomach surgery,</a> but I opted out. However, I realized that all the medications in the world wouldn't help me unless I learned the foundations of a healthy lifestyle. My intent was to lose the weight and keep it off. The answers included eating on a schedule. I eat a certain amount — a small meal of around 300 calories — every two and a half hours. It could be a protein shake or yogurt with a couple of strawberries. It could be a quarter of a cup of the leanest ground beef you can get with steamed vegetables. I limit my carbohydrates and increase my protein intake, such as turkey. I've also learned to enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables, such as tomatoes and cucumbers. I buy the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/best-costco-kirkland-signature-prepared-meals-from-family-which-to-skip">mixed stir fry from Costco </a>without sauce. For exercise, my husband, Steph, 54, and I set up a gym in our spare room. I ride the recumbent bike for an hour and 15 minutes and do 750 calf raises seven days a week. I also do 200 sit-ups and 200 crunches five days a week. Now, at 230 pounds, I've gone from a 6X to a 1X. I can wear jeans for the first time in years, lace up my tennis shoes, and carry my dog, <keyword id="20150266" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="toby" source="keywords">Toby</keyword>, a 19-year-old <keyword id="23853546" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="yorkie" source="keywords">Yorkie</keyword>, up and down the stairs 30 times a day. <h2>I'm struggling with body dysmorphia</h2>Unfortunately, I continue to struggle with body image. When they're telling you to lose weight, nobody points out you're probably going to have at least 20 pounds worth of skin hanging on your arms, legs, and stomach. Your clothing doesn't look right and it's uncomfortable because it causes irritation, even infection. Luckily, I have a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-topical-steroid-withdrawal-how-treat-tws-symptoms-2023-7">cortisone prescription</a> from my dermatologist. I'll see my 500-pound self in the mirror. I often feel like I haven't lost much weight at all. It's only when I compare my before-and-after photos that I really notice the difference. People said I should consider plastic surgery. But I have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/anesthesia-side-effects">trouble thinking about anesthesia</a>. Still, my confidence grows every day. Steph is prouder of me than I am of myself at the moment, but I'm getting there. <ul class="summary-list"><li>There's new evidence that chemicals can migrate to human bodies via material like plastic containers.</li><li>It's not clear what the health risks may be, but at least a few of the chemicals are known hazards.</li></ul>New research suggests you're being exposed to thousands of chemicals, including hazardous substances, that can leach into the human body through food- and beverage-related material like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/drinking-from-plastic-bottles-can-increase-diabetes-risk-new-research-2024-6">plastic bottles</a> and takeout containers.It's not a surprise that our environment is full of contaminants, like <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microplastics-penises-testicles-male-fertility-plastic-health-environment-2024-7">microplastics</a>, that can accumulate in our bodiesBut researchers in a recent study were taken aback by just how many chemicals in our everyday items can migrate into humans, and said it's "concerning" that we don't fully understand the risks.The researchers, led by scientists from a Swiss nonprofit called the Food Packaging Forum Foundation, looked at data on more than 14,000 food contact chemicals — substances in containers or other materials that touch what we eat and drink.The study, published September 17 in the <a target="_blank" href="https://affiliate.insider.com?h=98f40f9124eaa010f2a0a4c0fb4f3c1e59d87c00a6f65522c297e9b5c22824cf&amp;postID=66eae69769657a7deb42dbab&amp;postSlug=thousands-of-chemicals-entering-human-bodies-from-food-packaging-study-2024-9&amp;site=bi&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nature.com%2Farticles%2Fs41370-024-00718-2">Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology</a>, explained that 25% of the chemicals they were studying — about 3,601 substances — showed up inside the human body, in samples including skin, hair, blood, breast milk, and fat tissue.That suggests manufacturing chemicals are migrating into our bodies from items we use to store, package, or cook our food. It's not just plastic either, since even paper or cardboard can contain substances like ink that can be problematic when it comes into contact with food.<h2 id="27fa7f62-8a96-4c1c-a5a6-1d66b9506469">Trying to understand the health risks</h2>Scientists are digging for clues to understand the impact of these chemicals on long-term health.Some of these chemicals are known to be dangerous, including <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-causes-cancer-food-products-that-increase-your-cancer-risk-2018-3">carcinogens (cancer-causing) substances</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-avoid-toxic-chemical-phthalates-in-food-makeup-toiletries-2021-10">toxins</a> linked to hormone and reproductive problems.One such category is called PFAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), known as "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chart-how-long-hazardous-forever-chemicals-pfas-stay-in-blood-2023-3">forever chemicals</a>" because they linger and accumulate in our bodies and in the water and soil. PFAs exposure is linked to some cancers, liver damage, and more, as well as possible developmental defects in children.Other hazardous chemicals the study found in food and our bodies include <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/health/diet-nutrition/what-is-bpa">BPA</a> (a toxic ingredient in packaging linked to hormone problems) and heavy metals that can cause harm to our DNA.And there's a lot we don't know about many of the other chemicals found in human samples, including whether they might be harmful or what, if any, amount is safe.The actual number of chemicals we're exposed to through food and drinks could also be much higher than the 3,601 estimated in the study, according to the researchers.<h2 id="5746f6cb-2471-495d-9d89-a8d0cff3dc10">Putting limits on chemical exposure</h2>This same team of researchers previously published a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28893723/">study</a> that found government regulations aren't doing much to prevent chemical exposure.While there are some existing rules — such as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/epa-hazardous-forever-chemicals-drinking-water-limits-2024-4">limits on PFAs in drinking water</a> — legislation is slow to keep up with the latest science, and sometimes too vague to enforce. Plus, there's so much we don't know about potential risks of chemicals that haven't been studied as closely.The new study is one crucial step in understanding how chemicals in our environment (and in our food) could affect our health long-term, and how we might be able to reduce the risks in the future."This work highlights the fact that food contact materials are not fully safe, even though they may comply with regulations, because they transfer known hazardous chemicals into people," Jane Muncke, senior author of the study, environmental toxicology expert, and managing director at the Food Packaging Forum, said in a press release."We would like this new evidence base to be used for improving the safety of food contact materials — both in terms of regulations but also in the development of safer alternatives," Muncke said.

"There has been no shooting in all the 11 studios of any sort since this morning," a spokesperson of the <keyword id="22586110" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Directors-Guild" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Directors' Guild" meta.hostid="83" meta.entityid="Directors' Guild">Directors' Guild</keyword> said. The technicians' body is also slated to meet later on Monday on their boycott. While producers also came forward in support of directors' demand. Directors Association of Eastern India in a statement on Sunday night said: "In deference to the wishes and sentiments of majority of directors, the association has decided to go for indefinite cease work on shooting floors from Monday (July 29) till the problem faced by directors are addressed in an amicable and proper manner." In a facebook post titled #directorsinsolidarity, prominent filmmakers including Aparna Sen, Kaushik Ganguly, Srijit Mukherjee, Arindam Sil, Indrasis Acharya, Indradip Dasgupta, Kamaleswar Mukherjee, Atanu Ghosh and others said despite the Directors Guild allowing Rahool Mukherjee to helm the shooting of the untitled film (by SVF), the first-day shoot could not take place on July 27 at a city studio as the technicians stayed away. As demanded by many directors after this development we suggest until the technicians under the federation agree to take part in the shoot accepting Rahool Mukherjee as director, till then we will be forced to go for non-cooperation," the statement said. The directors further asserted federation cannot impose its will in an arbitrary manner without seeking any acceptable solution. "The way technicians of the federation have been forced to non-cooperate with Rahool Mukherjee is ominous for the entertainment industry and insulting for every single director, the statement said. "Any disruption of shooting will affect actors, directors, technicians, producers - every stakeholder in the industry - which will do no good... We therefore call upon every side to sit for talks for the interest of industry and iron out differences. If required the artist's forum can mediate to resolve the issue. Let's not allow the situation to snowball into a major crisis that will only affect everyone in the industry as well as the audiences," the forum earlier said. The forum is the apex body of actors in the entertainment industry in Bengal. On July 27, despite the clean chit given to filmmaker Rahool Mukherjee by the Directors' Guild allowing him to work as creative producer in an upcoming film, no technician turned up at a Kolkata studio on the first day of shooting. Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India (FCTWEI) president Swarup Biswas said Mukherjee was being debarred from directing films for three months for violating norms by visiting Bangladesh for shooting another movie without intimation to the federation and taking the help of technicians in Dhaka. Biswas told reporters that while it had been amicably decided earlier that Rahool Mukherjee would be the creative producer of the film to be shot from July 27, the call sheet given to them for the shoot still referred to Rahool Mukherjee as the director and he was seen taking every initiative during the shoot. "This was seen as violating the spirit of our agreement and we technicians don't want to work under the instruction of Mukherjee who had not taken any technician from Kolkata to complete 10 days of shooting of an OTT film 'Lohu' in Bangladesh earlier this year," Biswas said. "Mukherjee himself had admitted his mistake at the first meeting with the federation and guild earlier in July but now retracting." The untitled film produced by SVF mired in uncertainty starred Prosenjit Chatterjee, Anirban Bhattacharya and Priyanka Sarkar. SVF which was behind the project had stated that Soumik Haldar would now direct the film while Rahool Mukherjee would be the creative producer. However, most directors in solidarity with Rahool Mukherjee now demanded that he should not be replaced.
