Davos, The proportion of CEOs who believe global economic growth will improve over the next 12 months has more than doubled since last year, the annual <keyword id="20211002" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="pwc-global-ceo-survey" source="keywords">PwC Global CEO Survey</keyword> showed on Monday. The survey, released on the first day of the <keyword id="20020435" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="world-economic-forum" source="keywords">World Economic Forum</keyword> Annual Meeting here, also showed that almost half of CEOs do not believe their businesses will be viable in a decade amid acceleration of technology and climate pressures. <br /><br />The survey, which interviewed over 4,700 CEOs across 105 countries and territories, found that 38 per cent of CEOs are optimistic about global economic growth prospects in the next one year, up from 18 per cent in 2023. <br /><br />CEOs' expectations of economic decline have also tumbled from a record high of 73 per cent in the 2023 survey to 45 per cent. <br /><br />Despite ongoing conflicts, the proportion of CEOs who felt their company is highly or extremely exposed to geopolitical conflict risk fell 7 percentage points to 18 per cent. <br /><br />CEOs in most regions of the world were found to be more likely to be optimistic about domestic economic prospects than pessimistic, but <keyword id="19905008" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="north-america" source="keywords">North America</keyword> and <keyword id="20055122" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="western-europe" source="keywords">Western Europe</keyword> bucked the trend. <br /><br />CEOs overwhelmingly see generative AI as a catalyst for reinvention that will power efficiency, innovation and transformational change, the survey said. <br /><br />At the same time, a great majority of CEOs said they will require workforce upskilling to reap the transformative benefits of generative AI. <br /><br />"This year's data suggests a high degree of CEO uncertainty ahead, but CEOs are taking action. They are transforming their business models, investing in technology and their people and managing the risks and opportunities presented by the climate transition," PwC Global Chair <keyword id="20205687" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bob-moritz" source="keywords">Bob Moritz</keyword> said. <br /><br />If businesses are to thrive over the short and long term, build trust, and deliver sustained and long-term value, they must accelerate the pace of reinvention, he said while releasing the survey results.

According to Moritz, the chairman of professional services firm PwC, they should be able to adjust to any challenge thrown their way with both speed and confidence.</p><p>"There are certain competencies they're going to need. I'd need them to be agile enough to learn, to lean into the learning opportunities and then take them and do something with them so they can redefine themselves," he told Insider. In 2019, PwC announced a $3 billion <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pwc-announces-3-billion-job-retraining-investment-as-competitive-edge-2019-9">investment in job training</a> for its employees. Anyone who participated was guaranteed a job at the firm, even if their original job was eliminated.</p><p>Being agile is even more important now, as the world adjusts to a post-pandemic society. New policies and challenges are afoot, and agility could be the key to successful leadership, experts say. </p><p>PwC is actively looking to hire workers with such soft skills as the ability to take risks, learn, and be agile. The company announced a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pwc-recruitment-hiring-12-billion-black-latinx-students-training-2021-6">$12 billion plan</a> on Tuesday to hire an extra 100,000 people thorough 2026. About 10,000 of those hires will be Black and Latin students. </p><p>"Today's person that gets hired for moving into a tax role, then our tax business, or a legal role, or an audit role or a consulting role," Moritz said. "I can't guarantee that specific job is going to be there three years from now." </p><p>Companies like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-the-agile-method-help-solve-systemic-racism-the-workplace-2020-6">Microsoft and Amazon</a> have used agile frameworks to grow their businesses and improve productivity for years. But this mindset isn't exclusive to executives at big companies. It's something any individual can cultivate with practice, <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/darrellrigby/">Darrell Rigby</a>, a partner and the global innovation lead at <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bains-innovation-lead-business-leaders-build-agile-mindset-2020-11">Bain &amp; Co., previously told Insider.</a></p><p>Rigby said leaders should look for opportunities for employees to work on projects that make them feel fulfilled and grow their skills. Capitalizing on specific employees' strengths will create a more well-rounded and agile team, he added. </p><p>"Understand that [agility] is both a mindset and a method," Rigby said. "Just having a mindset and good intentions isn't enough. Going through effective methods and practices without believing in them wouldn't work either. You need both to succeed."</p><p>During job interviews at PwC , Moritz said prospective employees can demonstrate their agility by talking about an example of a time where they took a new opportunity or learned a new skill. For example, a university student might want to show how they took on a leadership role in a club or adjusted to virtual learning on campus. </p><p>"That's a good predictor of their future agility, mobility, and advancement going forward," he said.</p>

That amounts to $3,636-$2,727 per employee annually, depending on the final timeline.</p><p>"We've got to be a talent magnet," Moritz told Business Insider on Monday, and that's why the investment, called "New World, New Skills," will be at the forefront of recruitment pitches.</p><p>The press release touted the investment as larger than <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/07/11/amazon-invests-700-million-to-retrain-a-third-of-its-u-s-workforce-by-2025/">Amazon's $700 million</a> by 2025 for 100,000 employees, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/training-employees-on-new-skills-and-technology-what-accenture-learned-2019-1">Accenture's $1 billion annually</a> for 482,000 employees. Moritz cited a PwC study that found 30% of all jobs are at risk of being automated by the mid-2030s, and PwC's workforce is subject to those forces, as much as anyone else. "I think it's a necessity because the world's moving so fast. You lose competitive edge and brand if you don't."</p><p>A large training announcement is intrinsically linked with the fear of job upheaval and loss, but Mortiz said that PwC was willing to make a bold agreement with PwC employees who engage with the upskilling initiative. "If you opt in, OK, we will not leave you behind. I can't guarantee you the specific job that you have or want to have. But I can guarantee you you're going to have employment here."</p><p>The $3 billion will be split among four sections: the investment required for taking employees away from clients and putting them in classrooms, the further development of digital training tools, the deployment of employees to community projects that spread the same techniques, and leveraging existing partnerships with the United Nations and World Economic Forum to help adapt the training to each of their markets around the world.</p><p>Moritz, who has been with PwC for 24 years and previously served as the US chair before taking the global role in July 2016, said the discussion for adapting its workforce for a rapidly changing environment began about five years ago. That led to upskilling efforts in different sectors a couple of years ago, and within the past year, it became clear it needed to become a global initiative.</p><p>Large firms across industries have been investing in job retraining as automation eliminates jobs, in what the WEF has popularly dubbed <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/davos-preparing-jobs-of-the-future-with-skills-training-2019-1">"the Fourth Industrial Revolution."</a> Accenture and IBM are two such companies that similarly have developed proprietary software <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-is-transforming-the-workplace-with-ibm-taking-the-lead-2019-7">allowing workers to track their skills and adjust as needed</a> by undergoing training, often in their free team, through on-demand lessons.</p><p>PwC created the role of chief digital officer in October 2017 for Joe Atkinson to oversee the development of its digital training portals and apps. This past May, Atkinson told us that PwC's US chair, Tim Ryan, gave employees the same guarantee Moritz said.</p><p>"It was probably even more powerful than we thought it was going to be because it reflects the stress and strain, and to some extent the fear, that people have that whatever they do today is going to be replaced by some technology in the future," Atkinson said. The idea then, is that there is enough foresight to determine which new primary skills PwC's employees across all of its businesses, and it's worth equipping them appropriately. "So that's where we started."</p>

Including responses from 1,581 officers spanning 83 territories, the report featured a jarring main takeaway: Pessimism about global economic growth is at a record.</p><p>More specifically, 53% of CEOs surveyed are predicting a decline in the rate of economic growth in 2020, up from 29% in 2019 and many multiples higher than the mere 5% registered in 2018. After all, with global markets fresh off a 2019 that saw nearly every major asset post <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/sp-500-2019-annual-return-for-year-best-since-2013-2019-12-1028790061?" target="_blank" rel="noopener">impressive gains</a>, it was difficult for many to wrap their head around such dismal expectations for economic growth.</p><p>Moritz attempted to explain what drove the record-setting pessimism by touching upon a handful of the biggest threats identified by CEOs worldwide.</p><p>They're listed below, accompanied by the percentage of CEOs who mentioned them. All quotes are attributable to Moritz and were delivered at PwC's press briefing at Davos.</p><h3>1) Over-regulation (36%)</h3><p>"When you look at the type of risks that CEOs identify, regulation continues to be a huge challenge consistently around the world. It may vary country by country, but the overall regulation issue is still a big phenomenon.</p><p>"There is a belief that government will act more so, which will have an impact on the technology space - the digital space. It's not only tech, but rather thinking through data and all the things within a digital agenda and economy.</p><p>"The CEOs are focused on three major themes. First, that we will end up seeing more regulation around the type of contact that's allowed or leveraged across the internet. Second, CEOs are very worried about government intervention in terms of breaking up some of the larger tech houses right now.</p><p>"And third is whether or not data is being used with some form of compensation to individuals. Those three things are what CEO believe might be coming when we think of more regulation.</p><p>"This concept of over-regulation is an interesting phenomenon to watch not just in the tech space, but even beyond that in terms of taxation, climate, and the role governments will play."</p><h3>2) Trade conflicts (35%)</h3><p>"The big issue today that's at top of mind for a lot of organizations and individual people is the trade conflict. It's risen significantly year-over-year.</p><p>"These CEOs are responding to a reduction in their ability to actually transact. To me, the CEOs that have a certain confidence level - those that will be sustained and survive in this economy - are the ones that can react quickest. If you look at this past year, the Chinese were the fastest to change supply chain.</p><p>"Now let's go to the other side of that equation. Even though there's a huge trade conflict issue out there, the CEOs in the US still have China as the No.1 area they'd want to invest outside of their home country. They're looking at the underlying demographics and the megatrends.</p><p>"Then, when we ask the same question of the CEOs in China - "are you going to invest in rich countries outside of your own?"- the US doesn't even make the top five anymore. The Chinese have quickly pivoted towards Southeast Asia and Australia. It comes back to the different mindsets CEOs have country by country."</p><h3>3) Cyber threats (33%)</h3><p>"This continues to be a big challenge globally, although it depends on the country. For example, in the UK, it's the No.1 risk that everybody is worried about."</p><h3>Bonus: Climate change</h3><p>While Moritz noted that climate change - one of the main focal points of Davos this year - failed to make the top 10 of overall CEO worries, he said that could soon change.</p><p>"For all of the discussion and all the dialogue that's started already here at Davos, the reality is that climate is not at the top of the CEOs' agenda for people to react to.</p><p>"CEOs and management teams and boards that will be in the successful category are those that, rather than just seeing climate as a downside risk, will see it as an upside opportunity. They'll need to ask how they can differentiate versus their competition to demonstrate they're doing something about it.</p><p>"And there's benefit to that, in terms of the type of stakeholder expectations people have. They'll see you as doing something about it. They'll be more likely to buy your product, more likely to join your organization.</p><p>"What we see today as a big opportunity, over the next couple of years, is for organizations to put climate into everything they're doing, leverage technology and artificial intelligence to find the innovations they can bring that both have a bottom-line impact, and have an impact on society.</p><p>"It's this concept of purpose and profit being together - not one or the other - is extremely important. The CEOs that understand that are doing something about it, and they have a much higher likelihood of success, even in this uncertain world."</p>

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>PwC</span></p><p class="caption">PwC global chairman Bob Moritz said CEOs need to commit their companies to a purpose if they want to survive and thrive.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Bob Moritz is<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/s?q=pwc"> PwC</a>'s global chairman, and in January wrote a letter accompanying his firm's annual CEO survey recommending four things every CEO should do.</strong></li><li><strong>We spoke with Moritz at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/cecp">CECP</a>'s CEO Investor Forum, dedicated to replacing toxic short-term fixation with a renewed emphasis on creating long-term value.</strong></li><li><strong>Mortiz believes that CEOs have an obligation to committing to a purpose that takes into account all shareholders, not just because it's morally good, but because it's necessary for survival.</strong></li><li><strong>This post is part of Business Insider's ongoing series on <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/better-capitalism">Better Capitalism</a>.</strong></li></ul><p>For the past two decades, professional services giant PricewaterhouseCoopers has been surveying more than 1,000 CEOs around the world each year.</p><p>Over the past few surveys, it's become clear that a growing number of CEOs are concluding that maximizing quarterly growth is not the path to sustainable, long-term value.</p><p>Treating employees as more than an expenditure or incorporating a societal purpose into your company is no longer seen as feel-good marketing, but a necessity for survival.</p><p>Business Insider spoke with PwC global chairman Bob Moritz at the <a href="http://cecp.co/home/our-coalition/strategic-investor-initiative/">CECP's CEO Investor Forum </a>in February, where CEOs of international public companies met with investors to discuss ways to move toward prioritizing long-term value in a way that benefits all stakeholders, including customers, employees, communities, and shareholders.</p><p>Moritz told us that a CEO who complains that shareholders won't let them make necessary investments for the future are missing the point (a belief media mogul and former New York City mayor <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/michael-bloomberg-american-ceos-implement-long-term-strategy-2018-3">Michael Bloomberg shares</a>). "You will never satisfy everybody," Mortiz said, adding that you shouldn't have to.</p><p>"The onus is on the CEO and the management team to put forth a value proposition that over a certain time horizon investors should want to participate and share in the returns of the company," he said.</p><p>Moritz explained to us that the debate over how to balance short-term and long-term strategies has been going on in the United States since the 1930s, but it's emerged in a new context because of the rise of instant data transfer, years of hedge funds and day traders, and an increasingly empowered and informed consumer base and workforce that is demanding more from businesses.</p><p>In <a href="https://www.pwc.com/gx/en/ceo-survey/2018/pwc-ceo-survey-report-2018.pdf">the 2018 CEO survey</a>, Moritz wrote that this year's findings reveal a community of CEOs who are seeing a troubling misalignment of economic growth and social progress, primarily fueled by income inequality. He offered four suggestions for ways corporate leaders can address this.</p><h2>Develop metrics beyond financial goals</h2><p>"As business executives, we can supplement measures such as GDP and shareholder value with indicators of quality of life," Mortiz wrote.</p><p>He said he's found there's an increasing number of chief executives working with boards to developing long-term goals that will improve the relationship with the stakeholders other than investors. For example, consumer-goods company Unilever is working toward having all of its agricultural raw materials be sustainable by 2020 as part of its ambitious and broad <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/unilever-paul-polman-long-term-sustainability-diversity-2018-3">Unilever Sustainable Living Plan</a>.</p><h2>Implement emerging technologies in a socially conscious way</h2><p>For the last few years, one of the hottest topics in the entire business world is the rise of artificial intelligence across all walks of life, and how it will displace jobs. Moritz recommended that companies incorporate emerging technologies like AI in ways that take into consideration the ways they will affect their employees - an approach <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/future-of-artificial-intelligence-microsoft-brad-smith-harry-shum-2018-1">Microsoft's leadership team is currently focused on</a>.</p><h2>Invest in employee education</h2><p>Mortiz wrote that he found it encouraging that the majority of the CEOs surveyed recognized the importance of investing in their employees' skillsets, given that we are in an age of rapidly changing technologies that will either transform or replace existing jobs.</p><h2>Commit to a purpose that accounts for all stakeholders</h2><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blackrock-ceo-larry-fink-just-sent-a-warning-to-ceos-everywhere-2018-1">BlackRock CEO Larry Fink caused a stir</a> when he announced in January that his company, the world's largest asset manager, would only do business with companies that could define both their role in society and their long-term strategy.</p><p>Moritz agreed, noting that it's a necessity in today's world.</p><p>"From environmental footprints to social impacts to investor demands, businesses are scrutinized by an ever-wider array of stakeholders," he wrote. "If they fall short in any respect, they erode a vital commodity: trust. <p><strong><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></strong></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Global CEOs have become increasingly pessimistic about global economic growth in the past year and expect their businesses to suffer in the short to medium term as a result. </strong></li><li><strong>CEOs have traditionally seen the US as the most attractive place to invest, but it is close to losing that crown, with China and India rising rapidly in the rankings.</strong></li><li><strong>CEOs are less concerned with threats like terrorism and global warming, and are instead trying to react to geopolitical uncertainty brought about by populism and changing national policies. </strong></li></ul><p>Global CEOs praised 2018 as a year of strong global growth but by the end of the year they'd changed their minds completely. </p><p>PwC's annual global CEO survey, released Monday on the eve of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, found that 30% of those surveyed were projecting a decline in global economic growth in 2019, up from a mere 5% the previous year.</p><p>Pessimism about the economy is fuelled by the constantly shifting policy landscape across the world which is dividing countries, the survey showed. </p><p>In the Middle East and Europe the findings were starkest with 38% and 33% of those surveyed pessimistic about global growth for this year.</p><p>Meanwhile, optimism among North America's CEOs dropped the most sharply, from 63% to 37%, while the percentage signalling a slowdown in global growth moved from a negligible 3% to 28%.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wef-global-survey-most-back-immigration-reject-populist-ideas-2019-1">A massive new survey suggests it could be time to call the peak in global populism</a></em></p><p>The US is close to losing its top spot as the most desired destination for investment outside of a CEO's region, according to the survey which canvassed 1,378 chief executives in more than 90 territories. The share of CEOs selecting the US as their top market for growth dropped 41% in the past year. </p><p>"Number one was always US, in the last couple of years, and then China. Both of them have still remained one and two, but have come down significantly, opening the door for other countries," said PwC's global chairman Bob Moritz in an interview with CNBC in Davos. </p><p>"India is one of those countries. When you look at what Prime Minister Modi has done to that country," he added.</p><p>Over-regulation is still the number one concern for global CEOs but policy uncertainty is now the second most important issue with trade conflicts also much higher on this year's survey. </p><p>CEOs also reported a noteworthy dip in confidence in their own organisations' revenue prospects over the short (12-month) and medium (three-year) term. The world's CEOs are getting increasingly nervous about the state of the global economy, a major new survey shows

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>PwC</span></p><p class="caption">PwC Global Chairman Bob Moritz.</p></div><p></p></div></div>DAVOS, SWITZERLAND - The bulk of the world's CEOs are more concerned about the burgeoning workers' skills gap than political uncertainty from Brexit, US President-elect Donald Trump's policies, or the rise of populism across Europe.</p><p>According to the <span>20th annual survey of CEOs worldwide by one of the largest accounting firms in the world - PwC - the leaders of companies are growing more confident in their groups' growth prospects. </span></p><p><span>The survey was conducted </span>between September and December 2016, and 1379 CEOs responded from 79 countries.</p><p>The break down of the CEO numbers are as follows:</p><ul><li>57%of the CEOs worked in privately owned companies.</li><li>43% in publicly listed companies.</li><li>36% worked at companies with revenues over $1 billion annually.</li></ul><p>Key findings from the report show:</p><ul><li>38% (2016: 35%) are very confident about their company's growth prospects in the next 12 months.</li><li>29% (2016: 27%) believe global economic growth will pick up in 2017.</li><li><span>As a result of growing confidence, 52% of CEOs plan to increase the number of jobs in their companies.</span></li></ul><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>PwC</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>But there are heaps of issues that still worry CEOs - and concerns over the employment market dominate the survey.</span></p><p><span>According to the PwC report, the availability of workers with the key skills to fill positions is high at 77%, while in comparison, "</span>worries about protectionism are growing," with 59% of CEOs concerned about protectionism.</p><p> <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>PwC</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"Despite a tumultuous 2016, CEO confidence is moving back up - albeit slowly and still a long way from the levels we saw back in 2007. But there are signs of optimism right across the globe, including in the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword> and US, where despite predictions of a Trump slump and a Brexit exit, CEOs confidence in their company's growth are up from 2016," said Bob Moritz, Global Chairman at PwC in a statement.<span><br /></span></p><p>"And that mood is reflected elsewhere, with more CEOs across the world targeting the US and UK for investment than a year ago.</p><p>"While CEOs are more confident in the opportunity for growth, this year they told us these three concerns that were top of mind: a people and technology strategy that creates a workforce fit for the digital age; preserving trust in their businesses in a world of increasingly virtual interactions; and making globalisation work for everyone by engaging ever more with society and collaborating to find solutions. All topics that will be high up the Davos agenda."</p><p>Earlier on Monday, <span>Dr. Nariman Behravesh, the chief global economist at </span><a href="https://ihsmarkit.com/" target="_blank" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?hl=en&amp;q=https://ihsmarkit.com/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1484401929432000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFlQAc1wXpk-hVge0vG-Kg2i4fu0Q">IHS Markit</a><span>, told Business Insider that <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/ihs-markits-nariman-behravesh-at-davos-2017-protectionism-trump-brexit-populism-jobs-and-skills-technology-2017-1">one of the biggest challenges facing Davos goers this year is how to tackle the problem of globalisation taking away lower-skilled workers' jobs.</a></span></p><p>"The challenge for the Davos elite is this - how can you help these people in the developed world to get the skills to take on new jobs and what policies can be put in place? If they don't, Davos will become irrelevant. This is a call to action," said Dr. Behravesh to BI.</p><p>"I am not being negative on Davos, I just think we are at a crossroads right now and we can't just keep talking. We need to do something. Meanwhile, other newer jobs being created are in higher tech industries and require higher skills. The world's CEOs are more worried about a burgeoning jobs problem than Brexit or populism

Nearly 35% of women respondents in a recent <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/UIDAI-gets-PwC-to-audit-Aadhaar-security/articleshow/49641728.cms">PwC</a> survey admitted to leaving their former employee because of lack of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/poor-pay-hikes-and-slow-career-growth-force-indian-techies-to-demand-easier-resignation/articleshow/57427987.cms">career growth</a>.<br />
<br />
In the top three traits to be looked in an employer, both female and male respondents included opportunities for career progression, competitive wages and flexible work arrangements.<br />
<br /> The respondents included <keyword id="4267557" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="women-employees-from-India">women employees from India</keyword>, Brazil, China, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Poland, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa and the UAE, according to a release.<br />

"When you look at what drives job satisfaction, people clearly seek opportunities for career progression. Putting in place formal career progression plans is one way of making sure employees remain motivated and committed to the organisation," said Bob Moritz, Global Chairman of PwC.<br />

The survey covered 4,792 professionals from 70 countries, out of which 3,934 were women and 845 were men.<br />

The report is titled “Winning the fight for female talent: How to gain the diversity edge through inclusive recruitment” and aims at finding ways for employers to attract and retain women employees.<br />

Here’s why most women switch from their jobs
