8 of the dreamiest hotels in Aruba that feel like you've escaped to your own private paradise

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Freelance writer Molly O'Brien visited two <keyword id="6368036" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="hotels">hotels</keyword> in vastly different geographic locations — Santa Monica's <keyword id="18966" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Hotel">Hotel</keyword> Casa del Mar and Hotel Cerro in San Luis Obispo county — to compare and contrast their reopenings.</li><li>While capacity and noise differed between the hotels, both had reopening plans with significant accommodations and enhanced safety protocols.</li><li>O'Brien says neither experience felt cleaner or safer than the other, and she felt "completely safe in both locations."</li></ul><p>Across the United States, hospitality properties are reopening with increased safety measures and enhanced cleanliness protocols in order to protect their guests. In California, which has been one of <a href="https://goldrushcam.com/sierrasuntimes/index.php/news/local-news/25152-california-state-officials-announce-latest-covid-19-facts-for-wednesday-afternoon-september-2-712-052-up-4-255-over-tuesday-s-report-confirmed-cases-13-163-deaths-up-145-over-tuesday-s-report">the states hardest hit by COVID-19</a>, the <keyword id="6354692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> and hospitality industry has taken an especially hard blow. </p><p>Now that travel restrictions are relaxing, I wanted to see how reopening looks at different California hotels. I visited Santa Monica's <a href="https://www.hotelcasadelmar.com/">Hotel Casa del Mar,</a> located in Los Angeles County, which has a population of approximately 10 million, and <a href="https://www.hotelcerro.com/">Hotel Cerro </a>located on California's Central Coast in San Luis Obispo county, which has a population of just over 283,000. </p><p>I wanted to experience these two hotels' reopenings, and compare and contrast how they differ based on the contrasting geographic locations and demographics of each property. Here's what I discovered. </p><h2>Hotel Casa del Mar, Santa Monica</h2><p>Tourism is <a href="https://www.santamonica.com/about-smtt/economic-value-of-tourism/">a significant contributor to the Santa Monica economy</a>. In 2018, 8.4 million visitors came to Santa Monica (4.4 million of which were international visitors), which led to $1.93 billion in tourism revenue. When COVID-19 hit and travel essentially halted, the city's employment and tourism revenue were both enormously impacted. </p><p>As soon as I pulled up at <a href="https://www.hotelcasadelmar.com/">Hotel Casa del Mar,</a> in sunny Santa Monica, California, I could feel that it was an ideal place for a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding Angeleno lifestyle. The hotel emits a sort of a Mediterranan vibe, with beachy ocean design influences.</p><div type="image" title="CasaDelMar_Pool632Twilight 0174_v3" height="2688" width="4032" msid="78477620" hostid="261"></div><p>Self-parking and valet are both offered onsite, and I chose valet. Attendants greeted me wearing masks and gloves, and whisked away my car somewhere safe so I could focus on making the most of my stay. An attendant offered to take my bags, which I felt comfortable agreeing to, since he was wearing gloves and a mask. </p><p>Upon entering the lobby, it was noticeable that the tables and couches had been arranged to accommodate social distancing regulations; there are signs on the tables letting guests know that indoor dining has temporarily been suspended due to current Los Angeles County safety guidelines.</p><p>There was a marker I was supposed to stand behind to provide six feet of space between me and the guest in front of me checking in. When I arrived at the check-in desk, there was a wall of glass between me and the woman who I spoke with, and everyone in the lobby was wearing a mask — both employees and guests. There were hand sanitizer dispensers distributed throughout the room on tables and next to doors.</p><p>The manager informed me that the hotel is currently sitting at about 40% occupancy, and most of the guests are locals that are looking for somewhere to relax and enjoy a staycation close to home (but closer to the beach). Casa del Mar offers 129 guest rooms and 16 suites, including three two-story penthouse suites — so it definitely isn't a problem to space out guests between rooms and floors.</p><div type="image" title="Hotel room interior." height="3024" width="4032" msid="78477626" hostid="261"></div><p>When I explored the property, I felt like I was seeing cleaners and housekeeping service everywhere I went, and there were signs by the elevators directing guests to be respectful of a four person limit at one time. </p><p>I was visiting on a Thursday, and it felt more relaxed than it might be on a weekend — but I could tell that capacity was lower than a normal September weekday. From my personal experience living and working in the city, there's no true "tourist season," because pre-COVID there are normally always people visiting Los Angeles from everywhere in the world. </p><p>After checking out the room, which was extremely clean and well-organized, I explored the property's grounds and discovered that the pool is open and offering poolside food and beverage service until sunset. The hotel is spacing out each pool chair and covering them with towels that appeared to be replaced between each guest. </p><div type="image" title="HotTubClosed" height="4032" width="3024" msid="78477629" hostid="261"></div><p>The jacuzzi was understandably closed, as it's near impossible to abide by social distancing guidelines in such a small space. The fitness center is open, but only one guest room is allowed to use the space at a time, and they must book a time slot beforehand. The spa is temporarily closed.  </p><p>Luckily, this hotel is just steps from the Santa Monica pier, making it easy to stroll the boardwalk and explore the area without having to use any kind of rideshare or public transportation to enjoy the scenery and get some steps in.</p><p>Onsite restaurant <a href="https://www.hotelcasadelmar.com/dining/terrazza-lounge">Terraza</a> is only offering al fresco dining at the moment, which hasn't seemed to be a problem for its guests, because it means listening to the sounds of the ocean and sitting closer to the sand. The other onsite restaurant, <a href="https://www.hotelcasadelmar.com/dining/catch">Catch</a>, remains temporarily closed. </p><p>The only challenge I anticipated with outdoor night time dining was being cold (living in SoCal has made me soft when it comes to internal temperature regulation), and it was an extremely windy September evening on the coast — but there were ample heat lamps protecting each table. Casa del Mar's director of food and beverage, Diego Ruiz De Porras, said the hotel is ordering more heat lamps as they'll continue to offer outdoor dining service as the local weather gets colder. </p><p>When I arrived, there were again markers on the ground to space out guests waiting to check in for dinner. My server was wearing gloves and a mask and the restaurant was using paper menus that were replaced between each guest, or alternatively, QR codes via cell phone. The menu was still full-service, with more than enough choices for starters, entrees, drinks, and desserts, and items for diners of any age. </p><div type="image" title="QR Code at Terrazza." height="4032" width="3024" msid="78477632" hostid="261"></div><p>I could tell it would be a peaceful night's rest at the hotel, because the lower occupancy rate meant that there were no noisy guests or outside disruptions.</p><p>The next morning I went for a walk along the boardwalk, which was just steps from one entrance of the hotel. You could tell that the others walking, biking, and running alongside me were Los Angeles locals, not tourists visiting from abroad.</p><p>Usually Santa Monica is filled with tourists all-year round because it's such a well-known international destination, but my experience at Casa del Mar provided a window into the slow but steady recovery of the Los Angeles travel industry — starting with local travel and staycations. </p><h2>Hotel Cerro, San Luis Obispo</h2><p><a href="https://www.hotelcerro.com/">Hotel Cerro</a> is located in San Luis Obispo, which is about three hours north of Los Angeles, located on the heart of California's Central Coast. San Luis Obispo is a well-known destination for hiking, wine, and relaxing halfway between the bustle of San Francisco and Los Angeles. Tourism spending supports 13.3% of all jobs in San Luis Obispo County, which has traditionally hosted on average about<a href="https://assets.simpleviewinc.com/simpleview/image/upload/v1/clients/slocal/SLO_CAL_Economic_Impact_Report_22d17f05-ebae-488f-bc4b-9e830174d08d.pdf"> 7.2 million visitors per year, and was growing</a> until the <keyword id="43587" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="pandemic">pandemic</keyword>'s travel restrictions impacted the amount of travelers passing through town. </p><p>Unlike Santa Monica's Hotel Casa del Mar which has been open for decades, Hotel Cerro just debuted in January of 2020 — and was almost immediately forced to shut down just weeks later due to COVID-19 safety regulations. </p><div type="image" title="Outdoor Events Space Patio" height="4032" width="3024" msid="78477636" hostid="261"></div><p>Hotel Cerro reopened in June with <a href="https://www.hotelcerro.com/covid-19/">enhanced safety protocols</a>, to offer those traveling through the Central Coast or seeking an escape from city <keyword id="6360041" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="life">life</keyword> in one of the most frequently named <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/destinations/north-america/united-states/happiest-cities-united-states-2017/">happiest cities in america.</a> It's an intimately sized hotel, with just 65 rooms. </p><p>When I pulled into the self-parking garage on a Wednesday evening, it was clear that this hotel was full of potential. Now that it's open, it seems to be a stop for locals and visitors to grab a bite to eat at the onsite restaurant <a href="https://www.hotelcerro.com/slo-restaurants/brasserie-slo/">Brasserie SLO</a>, or enjoy a signature craft cocktail made from the onsite <a href="https://www.hotelcerro.com/slo-restaurants/distillery/">distillery</a> or rooftop pool bar. </p><p>Upon reaching the lobby, it was clear that this space hasn't seen as many visitors as an urban and historic property such as Hotel Casa del Mar; everything here was clean and new. There were at least four hand sanitizer dispensers just in the lobby, and I checked in using an iPad that was wiped down immediately after I returned it to the desk. </p><div type="image" title="Room Interior" height="3024" width="4032" msid="78477640" hostid="261"></div><p>I was surprised to learn the hotel has been consistently sitting near full capacity on the weekends since reopening in June. It seems many people are seeking relief from the crowded cities SLO sits in-between — SF and LA (it's a happy and relaxing medium for a weekend getaway) — but it does require more time, effort, and planning to get here than Santa Monica. </p><p>This hotel is situated in the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo between Broad Street and Garden Street, making it a great homebase for exploring the shopping and dining experiences of SLO. </p><p>This was exactly the case for the hotel's onsite restaurant <a href="https://www.hotelcerro.com/slo-restaurants/brasserie-slo/">Brasserie SLO</a>, which is currently using paper menus, scrubbing the table down between each guest, and outfitting employees in surgical-style facemasks. Visitors can check out the hotel's onsite bakery, which is currently serving sweets at the hotel's restaurant, but has yet to officially open as a freestanding bake shop due to COVID-19 construction delays. </p><p>The next morning, I toured the property and learned about the increased safety regulations at the pool, which is open with fewer chairs to sit in and face mask mandates. </p><div type="image" title="Pool with Spaced Out Seating, Reduced Capacity" height="3024" width="4032" msid="78477643" hostid="261"></div><p>My tour guide showed me their events space, which is still hosting small, spaced out events that follow county safety guidelines — <a href="https://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/article243171411.html">currently limiting gatherings to 10 people or less.</a> Normally there's also valet, bell service, and room service, but this has been temporarily halted. </p><p>San Luis Obispo is usually a quiet respite from busy city life, but was especially quiet this visit. San Luis Obispo is a college town, and the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo students don't normally return to school for another week or so; this year, the students are returning to the area if they have classes that must be taken in-person such as a hands-on science lab, but they also have the option to learn completely remotely. </p><p>My stay at Hotel Cerro was clean, and everyone I encountered was courteous and friendly. San Luis Obispo is definitely a relaxing getaway from busy city life, and this property's brand new amenities cleanliness enhanced protocol made it an enjoyable visit. </p><p><em>Editor's note: The writer paid a media rate for her one-night stay at the property.</em></p><h2>Ultimately, I felt safe at both hotels — and I hope cleanliness measures stick around</h2><p>After visiting these two similarly marketed Californian boutique luxury hotels with vastly different geographic locations and visitor demographics, I can say that I felt completely safe at both locations. </p><p>Neither experience — urban or rural — felt cleaner or safer than the other and both are adhering to extremely enhanced cleaning procedures. The service modifications are apparent, but the visitor experience still offers guests the chance to feel like they're on a relaxing vacation. </p><p>The amount of disinfectant, hand sanitizer, and plexiglass barriers that were present in both these destinations was more than I've seen at any hotel in my entire life of traveling. My biggest takeaway from this experience is that I hope these cleanliness practices stick around in some form or another. For example, maybe in two years we won't need plexiglass barriers and facemasks — but we can certainly work towards better disinfecting the tables at onsite hotel restaurants between each guest. </p>

It's felt clean and uncrowded each time I've visited.</p><div type="image" title="Boardwalk with grass on each side leading to shore " height="3024" width="4032" msid="114887038" hostid="261" sizebytes="1815248"></div><h2 id="a245be3c-5ccf-4cfb-af14-89e55bacebef"><strong>I stay at a bed-and-breakfast that blends cozy with chic</strong></h2><p>There are several bed-and-breakfasts in Madison, plus a beachfront Hilton hotel.</p><p>I usually stay at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.homesteadmadison.com/">The Homestead</a>, an upscale B&amp;B that hits the right balance between charming and modern. Its dozen or so rooms are individually decorated with high-end furnishings and posh perks like Japanese toilets, showerheads infused with vitamins, and record players with an eclectic selection of vinyl.</p><p>Each guest has access to complimentary bikes, towels, and beach chairs to borrow. Plus, its gardens and decks with firepits make it easy for me to spend time outdoors.</p><p>I also love its gourmet snacks and elegant breakfast buffet with things like quiche, cake, fresh fruit, and yogurt.</p><h2 id="0dbd180a-b1d9-4fdb-a18b-3bdf4bb85a4c"><strong>There's plenty of retail therapy and artwork to be found in town</strong></h2><div type="image" title="RJ Julia Bookseller exterior with table of books out front " height="3024" width="4032" msid="114886892" hostid="261" sizebytes="1234122"></div><p>Madison's downtown is low-key, laidback, and walkable, with excellent New England vibes.</p><p>I can get lost for hours at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.rjjulia.com/">RJ Julia Booksellers</a>, which I consider one of the best independent bookstores in the entire country. </p><p>I always stop at <a target="_blank" href="https://drinkgreatteamarketplace.com/pages/savvy-tea-gourmet">Savvy Tea Gourmet</a>, which sells a variety of unique teas and has in-store tastings. When I'm not sure which tea leaves to buy, the owner steers me in the right direction.</p><p>The town also has a cluster of cute clothing boutiques. My favorite is<a target="_blank" href="https://www.thedressingroomboutique.com/?srsltid=AfmBOorhhabjogZtSELJ9xZt-_bACGH5r7SOXIJWGfdvR6Ht391tCb26"> The Dressing Room,</a> where the staff is friendly and the sales are legit.</p><div type="image" title="Sculpture with black and red silhouettes next to tree" height="1342" width="1910" msid="114886897" hostid="261" sizebytes="309800"></div><p>Along the way, I take in some of the local art. Madison has plenty thanks to the Sculpture Mile, a free outdoor public art installation of museum-quality sculptures scattered around town.</p><h2 id="f3a98435-7643-4012-b2a0-938ec256009e"><strong>Madison Cinemas is perfect for rainy days</strong></h2><p>When it's cold or rainy, you'll find me at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.madisoncinemas2.com/">Madison Cinemas</a> watching arthouse and international films.</p><p>The century-old theater has freshly-popped popcorn topped with real butter and local beer and wine.</p><h2 id="0d66ed9d-e5f7-43d8-82b1-cea9b0a16215"><strong>There's often something happening on the town green</strong></h2><p>Madison's historic town green is its leafy centerpiece. I like to stroll the peaceful paths and listen to live music during the free concerts on Sunday evenings in the summer.</p><p>It hosts a great farmers market every Friday afternoon from May until Thanksgiving and the town often has seasonal festivals. </p><h2 id="10f71ee6-809f-4139-bdb1-fea955cb0798">The culinary scene is great, too </h2><div type="image" title="Brick-lined street with shops and trees along it in Connecticut " height="3024" width="4032" msid="114887036" hostid="261" sizebytes="1810968"></div><p>Madison has a few eateries I try to stop at each time I visit. </p><p>French bistro <a target="_blank" href="https://barbouchee.com/">Bar Bouchée</a> transports me right to Europe with its ambiance and traditional Gallic fare. I can also never resist ordering the profiteroles drenched in warm chocolate sauce.</p><p>I book a table at <a target="_blank" href="https://thewharfmadison.com/">The Wharf</a> when I want to eat fresh seafood with a view of the water. My go-to order is the warm lobster roll served with a mountain of crisp shoestring fries.</p><p>When I crave pasta like my Nonna used to make, I head to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cafeallegre.com/">Café Allegre</a>. The Italian eatery serves classics like spaghetti with fresh clams and robust rigatoni with meatballs and sausage.</p><h2 id="f2868784-86da-4805-9c40-21acf0cc77a6"><strong>Madison is also lovely in the fall and winter</strong></h2><p>In the fall, the area's numerous farms and farm stands overflow with fresh produce and pretty flowers. My favorite is <a target="_blank" href="https://bishopsorchards.com/">Bishop's Orchard</a> in neighboring Guilford, where I go apple-picking each autumn.</p><p>The beaches are fun to visit throughout the year, too. The water usually stays warm well into October, so I can have a dip surrounded by <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/national-parks-must-visit-see-fall-foliage-2024-10">fall foliage</a>.</p><p>I even go in winter for chilly seaside strolls and snowshoeing on the maze of wooden boardwalks.</p>

I skip the Hamptons and head to a coastal town in Connecticut instead. It's less crowded and wonderful year-round.

In fact, tourism is off to a strong start in 2024, with many islands seeing an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.onecaribbean.org/buy-cto-tourism-statistics/latest-monthly-statistics/">increase in visitors compared to 2023</a>.</p><p>However, as someone who's been traveling to the Caribbean for the past two decades, I've observed some common mistakes first-time visitors make.</p><p>If you're planning a trip to the Caribbean and want to maximize your experience, here are some mistakes to avoid making while visiting.</p><h2 id="7fcfda5d-16ba-4b0c-9bad-5a1f0ccb478d"><strong>Not leaving the resort</strong></h2><div type="image" title="The view of a waterfall between thin, tropical trees." height="960" width="1280" msid="110568788" hostid="261" sizebytes="119486"></div><p>The Caribbean is full of gorgeous resorts, but one of the biggest mistakes I see first-time visitors make is never leaving the property. Every time I travel to an island, I make a point to leave the resort and check out nearby attractions.</p><p>One of my favorite recent-travel experiences was a day trip in Jamaica, where I was able to float down the Martha Brae River and climb Dunn's River Falls.</p><p>If you're unsure of what activities are available, check out some reputable tours online or ask your hotel's concierge for recommendations. If you do plan to leave the resort, be sure to do your research and take standard safety precautions.</p><h2 id="9471e389-526a-4e37-b448-cf1df4851b0b"><strong>Sticking to only all-inclusive resorts</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Buildings near the ocean in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico." height="817" width="1089" msid="110568790" hostid="261" sizebytes="105858"></div><p id="9471e389-526a-4e37-b448-cf1df4851b0b">The Caribbean is known for its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/all-inclusive-resort-mistakes-to-avoid-from-frequent-traveler">all-inclusive resorts</a>, which are convenient for families with small children or large groups of friends.</p><p id="9471e389-526a-4e37-b448-cf1df4851b0b">But for <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biggest-challenges-for-female-solo-traveler-safety-tips">solo travelers</a>, couples, and families with older kids, I recommend checking out smaller boutique hotels. Some of my best travel memories have come from staying at smaller properties.</p><p id="9471e389-526a-4e37-b448-cf1df4851b0b">When I visited Puerto Rico for the first time, I stayed in a charming one-bedroom apartment in Old San Juan, which was just a short taxi ride to the beach. However, the geography varies from island to island.</p><p id="08a89530-f0ec-4ebc-8933-dc8834782c90">Volcanic islands like St. Lucia and Dominica boast black-sand beaches, Turks and Caicos and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-bahamas-things-to-never-do-according-to-local-photos-2022-7">The Bahamas</a> have relatively flat terrains and deep cave systems, and Antigua and St. Croix have rolling hills ideal for long hikes.</p><p id="08a89530-f0ec-4ebc-8933-dc8834782c90">In Aruba, visitors can relax on white-sand beaches or explore the towering cactus plants, sand dunes, and rocky pools in Arikok National Park.</p><p id="08a89530-f0ec-4ebc-8933-dc8834782c90">Each island offers something a little different, and you can maximize your stay by knowing how you want to spend your vacation.</p><h2 id="297ca91d-f6f2-49b5-a956-de7c26bd8269"><strong>Not island hopping</strong></h2><p id="297ca91d-f6f2-49b5-a956-de7c26bd8269">While island hopping sounds costly, several islands have convenient and affordable ferries. For example, visitors can <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/day-trip-to-bahamas-from-florida-balearia-ferry-review-2023-5">take a ferry</a> from St. Kitts to neighboring Nevis to dip in the hot springs or visit the botanical gardens.</p><p id="297ca91d-f6f2-49b5-a956-de7c26bd8269">I always recommend setting aside a day to check out a nearby island, especially if it's accessible by ferry.</p><h2 id="b708a280-4732-4fe0-9adc-b0206087f0c3"><strong>Expecting a fast-paced lifestyle</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A beachfront restaurant with tables, chairs, and umbrellas. There is a large tree in the background." height="960" width="1280" msid="110568796" hostid="261" sizebytes="276774"></div><p id="b708a280-4732-4fe0-9adc-b0206087f0c3">First-time visitors to the Caribbean may be surprised to find that, for the most part, life seems to move slower on the islands.</p><p id="b708a280-4732-4fe0-9adc-b0206087f0c3">Be sure to leave time between activities or meals and embrace flexibility. If you have activities planned, I recommend doing one activity per day or setting aside at least half a day for each excursion.</p><p id="b708a280-4732-4fe0-9adc-b0206087f0c3">In Barbados, for example, I hired a driver to check out Bathsheba, a stunning rocky beach on Barbados's east coast. On our way back, my tour guide recommended stopping by a popular beachside restaurant, which wasn't on the itinerary.</p><p id="b708a280-4732-4fe0-9adc-b0206087f0c3">I ended up staying for a few hours, ordering food and drinks, and walking along the beach. I would have missed this delicious detour if I had been on a tight schedule, and I always advise embracing the slower island pace for the best experience.</p><h2 id="ae790993-7a4c-4be4-9064-0ecd90361756"><strong>Not eating local food</strong></h2><p>Part of the joy of traveling is experiencing new cuisine, and the Caribbean offers a variety of food that reflects each island's history and culture.</p><p>In Puerto Rico, I made it a point to eat mofongo, an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/a-brief-history-of-puerto-ricos-beloved-mofongo-180979947/">African-influenced dish</a> made from fried plantain. In <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/underwater-sculpture-museum-grenada-photos-2024-1">Grenada</a>, I tried oil down, a delicious meat-and-vegetable stew.</p><p>On a girls' trip to Curaçao, we stopped by a local restaurant that had come highly recommended for its goat burgers. I was apprehensive at first, but it was one of the most delicious and memorable meals on the trip.</p><h2 id="2024554a-30cd-4c93-9dee-7f545a698b1b"><strong>Not researching the best time to visit</strong></h2><div type="image" title="Palm trees on the beach on a sunny day." height="960" width="1280" msid="110568798" hostid="261" sizebytes="223890"></div><p>Though the Caribbean offers year-round warmth, some months are better than others for a trip.</p><p>For example, although most of the Caribbean experiences hurricane season from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/climo/">June to November</a>, a few islands like Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/advisor/credit-cards/travel-rewards/caribbean-vacations-where-hurricane-season-doesnt-matter/">outside the hurricane belt</a>.</p><p>The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.travelandleisure.com/best-time-to-visit-the-caribbean-7692711">summer low season</a> also means lower hotel rates, but it comes with higher temperatures and afternoon rain showers.</p><p>Peak season in the Caribbean is in the winter months when hotel rates are premium and rooms can sell out quickly. However, if you book well in advance, you can look forward to spending your New Year's Eve on the beach.</p>

Scott Fitzgerald, and today you're likely to see Beyonce sunning on a yacht in St. Tropez.</p><p>But that doesn't mean that travelers without a disposable income can't enjoy the French Riviera.</p><p>In fact, you can experience the coast's old world charm and dazzling beaches on a budget.</p><p>Here are the most affordable towns on the French Riviera.</p><h2>Nice</h2><p>Cannes and Nice are probably the most popular cities on the <span>Côte d'Azur</span>.</p><p>The difference between the two cities, though, is that Cannes doesn't have much to offer the budget traveler. Nice, on the other hand, is just as beautiful, and a lot less expensive.</p><p><strong>Accommodations</strong></p><p>The city has multiple chain hotels that offer rooms during peak season for under $150 per night. Although basic and modest, TripAdvisor reviews say all three hotels are clean and in prime locations.</p><p><strong>Beaches</strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Nice has a number of beaches that are free and open to the public, such as the Beau Rivage Public Beach, but beware that most of these are sprinkled with pebbles instead of soft white sand, so spending a few euros on a padded beach mat might be a smart idea. You can either pay 10 euros for a 48-hour pass to a few museums that all fall under the same category (ie fine arts, sciences, history) or you can pay 20 euros for a 7-day ticket to all museums and galleries in Nice. For more information on museum and gallery tickets, click <a href="http://en.nicetourisme.com/museums">here</a>.</p><p><strong>Transportation</strong></p><p>Traveling around and into or out of Nice is extremely easy and cheap.</p><p>Trains run along the coast, stopping at different towns. A train trip to Cannes, for example, can cost anywhere from <span>5 to 15 euros on the </span><a href="http://www.sncf.com/en/passengers">SNCF</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> train line.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Bus <keyword id="6354692" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Travel">travel</keyword> is even cheaper. </span><a href="http://www.lignesdazur.com/">Lignes d'azur</a> buses <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">travel up and down the coast. Although slower and less luxurious than the train, these buses cost one euro no matter how far you're traveling. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Within Nice there's a tram line that has 21 stops throughout the city - again only one euro per ride.</span></p><p>For the more active and adventurous tourist, there's <a href="http://www.velobleu.org/">Velo Blue</a>, which has bikes stationed all over city that are available to rent. The first half hour is free, and then every hour after that is one euro.</p><h2>Antibes</h2><p>Located in the Alpes-Maritimes region of southeastern France, the city of Antibes sits between Nice and Cannes and includes the small town of Juan-les-Pins. It's a picturesque resort area straight out of a postcard.</p><p><strong>Accommodations</strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Since Antibes is smaller than Nice, its selection of budget hotels is not as extensive. The Plage de la Gravette, the Plage de Ponteil,  and the Plage de la Salis are the three main public beaches in Antibes.</p><p><strong>Culture</strong></p><p>Tourists can pay just 10 euros for a 7-day pass that's valid for all municipal museums and the Fort Carré, a fort on the outskirts of Antibes that dates back to the 16th century.</p><p>For those looking to visit just one or two museums, there's the Musée Picasso, which houses a small collection of Picasso's paintings and ceramics. All of these are either free or charge just a small fee for visitors.</p><p><strong>Transportation</strong></p><p>Like Nice, Antibes offers train service (SNCF) or bus service (<a href="http://www.envibus.fr/">Envibus</a>). The Envibus has 31 bus routes throughout Antibes, and a one euro ticket will get you pretty much anywhere.</p><h2>Vence</h2><p>Although it doesn't sit along the coast, the small town of Vence is still part of the French Riviera. It's nestled in the hills of the Alpes Maritimes, and its quaint cobblestone streets and stone buildings make up for its lack of beaches.</p><p><strong>Accomodations</strong></p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Because of its size, Vence doesn't have any chain hotels, but it does have some affordable boutique hotels. All four offer rooms for under $150 per night. </p><p><strong>Culture</strong></p><p>A visit to the Ville medieval in Vence is a must. This tiny medieval town is truly a piece of history, and there are explanatory signs all throughout the village which provide a history lesson for tourists. Vence also offers the Chapelle du Rosaire, a gorgeous chapel which was decorated and designed by artist Henri Matisse; the chapel has an entrance fee of six euros, but the church's beauty makes it well worth the visit.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>Saint Paul de Vence is another must see, and it's just a short 10 minute ride from Vence. The walled village sits perched a top a lush green hill. You'll feel like you've stepped back in time during your visit.</p><p><strong>Transportation</strong></p><p>There are three lines of buses that run through Vence: the Navette gratuites, the Ligne 46, and the Créabus C40. Two free shuttles run from the town center and Vence's east side to the central bus station.
