BMW group joins the long list of auto manufacturers to revise the prices of all  models and mini models effective by January 2021

BMW, the luxury car maker from Germany, which launched its fifth <keyword id="1641453" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="MINI-Convertible">Mini Convertible</keyword> model in India yesterday, has said that it is open to local assembly of the car when it reaches a critical mass in sales. 
 
"We can look at local assembly here, when we reach a critical mass in sales volume. That can happen some years down the line," BMW Group India President Philipp von Sahr told PTI. 
 
As of now, BMW India has an assembly line in Chennai, which makes eight models in the country.

As of now, BMW India has an assembly line in Chennai, which makes eight models in the country. Sahr also added that the company does not want to make it a mass-brand just to increase the volume at the cost of the brand proposition of being the most premium small car in the world and in India. 
 
"Selling say 1,000 units as a premium brand and doubling that number at a lower price does not make much of a qualitative difference," he said while also adding that the mini doesn’t have any competition at all in this market. 
 
In the international market, BMW sold over 1.64 lakh units of Mini car in the first five years, while in India, it has been trending around 400 units per annum ever since it entered the market in 2012. 
 
Globally, amongst the largest selling model is the Cooper S, which is priced at Rs 31.4 lakh in India. Yesterday, its latest model, the Mini Cooper S Convertible, was launched at an introductory price of Rs 34.9 lakh, ex-showroom national.

Make In India: BMW might start local assembly of Mini Convertible

German luxury carmaker <keyword id="6355119" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BMW">BMW</keyword> today launched an updated version of premium compact car Mini Countryman, which comes with six airbags, dynamic traction control, anti-locking braking system, brake assist and run-flat indicator among other features, in India priced at Rs 36.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). "Selective design modifications for the exterior and interior along with innovative equipment features contribute to the more mature charisma and increased appeal of the new MINI Countryman," <keyword id="890930" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BMW-Group-India">BMW Group India</keyword>, President, <keyword id="1131692" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Philipp-von-Sahr">Philipp von Sahr</keyword> said. 

	The vehicle is available at Mini dealerships across India as a CBU (Completely Built-Up) unit from today onwards. 
 

	The BMW Group introduced Mini as a premium small car brand in India in 2012. Presently, the Mini model range in the country includes the Mini 3-door, the Mini 5-door, the Mini Convertible and the Mini Countryman.

BMW launches updated version of Mini countryman in India

But today, the market has just exploded with a number of brands stepping into the country and bringing their versions of the small car. 1)Mercedes A-Class A180 CDI (Rs 23.39 lakh upwards) This is a car built for any type of excursion. If you want to go out for a spin in the city or travel to a nearby vacation destination, this is the car for you. The looks of this hatchback are very modern and sporty. You also get a decent-sized cabin to seat a family of 4. It has all the modern amenities inside as far as <keyword id="4578" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="entertainment">entertainment</keyword> and safety are concerned. There are front airbags, brake assist, electronic stability and tyre pressure warning systems in this car. The driver gets an electronically managed seat, but not the front passenger.

This is the latest hatchback entrant from the international luxury car maker. The car seems to have been manufactured with an Indian driver in mind as everything it has to offer is pretty good for the Indian roads, except the ride height. Riding the traditional BMW looks and kidney grille outside, the 1 Series is excellent to look at, has exceptional road presence and simply screams for attention. The boot is large to accommodate weekend getaway luggage and the front seats are big enough for tall people. However, the legroom at the rear is a bit less. 
 BMW has taken special care when it comes to safety. You get airbags all over the cabin. Various drive assists such as ABS and cornering brake assist are also present in this model. For entertainment, the cockpit has the latest sparkle. You get the proprietary BMW iDrive system and everything from the CD player to the volume knob is within the reach of the driver. Steering keys are present, but one usually ends up using the iDrive knob next to <keyword id="1009187" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="the-middle">the middle</keyword> hand rest. The drive is super zippy. The 2.0 litre, 8-Speed automatic diesel engine just lights up as soon as you press the throttle. Four drive modes, including the comfort and the sports mode, are present in the 1 Series and drivers can shift between them on the fly. 
 
 
3)Mercedes B-Class B180 CDI (Rs 25.24 lakh) 
We call this car the soccer mom’s car. It’s just perfect for ladies who want to drive around the town or take their kids to soccer (or cricket) practice. This is spacious enough for a family of 5. The large boot enables one to put the weekend shopping and goods at the back. The ride is comfortable and the suspension absorbs most bumps on the roads with ease. The design of the car is very van-like, which is a good thing as you get more headroom inside the cabin.

What followed was mega updates in the Apple ecosystem starting with iOS 14, iPadOS 14 and WatchOS7 amd MacOS, among others. The next major version of iOS is set to be released later this year and the most visual change is that the home screen will now have widgets. In iOS 14, Apple users can pin widgets with updating information on the home screen, including calendar and maps mini-programmes. Users can drag a widget onto the iPhone home screen, where it will remain. Users can create a Smart Stack of widgets, which uses on-device intelligence to surface the right widget based on time, location, and activity, said Apple. "At the end of the Home Screen pages is the App Library, a new space that automatically organises all of a user's apps into one simple, easy-to-navigate view, and intelligently surfaces apps that may be helpful in the moment," said the company. With Picture-in-Picture support, iPhone users can now watch a video or take a FaceTime call while using another app. "iOS 14 transforms the most iconic elements of the iPhone experience, starting with the biggest update we've ever made to the Home Screen," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering. New Memoji options in Messages are even more inclusive and diverse with additional hairstyles, headwear, face coverings, and more. Apple also previewed iPadOS 14, with new features and designs that take advantage of the unique capabilities of iPad and its large Multi-Touch display. iPadOS 14 introduces an all-new compact design for incoming FaceTime and phone calls, Siri interactions, and Search to help users stay focused on the task at hand. iPadOS 14 brings Scribble to iPad with Apple Pencil, allowing users to write in any text field - where it will automatically be converted to typed text - making actions like replying to an iMessage or searching in Safari fast and easy. The company also announced new watchOS7 that delivers enhanced customisation tools and powerful new health and fitness features to Apple Watch. It was introduced in 1989 with the explicit mission of reviving the classic British roadster experience for a new generation of open-air motoring enthusiasts who wanted their cars to, you know, start every time they turned the key.Also, they would like the convertible top to not leak.It all seems completely obvious now, but over 25 years ago, it was anything but. Created by journalist-turned-designer Bob Hall, the Miata was born as a sketch in the late 1970s (according to the car's lore) and a decade later hit the streets and commenced its peppy, free-spirited embrace of the world's twists and turns. The original Miata wasn't a powerful car. It wasn't a fast car. And it wasn't a practical car.But it was a fun car. I should know because I owned a very base first-generation model, with the now long-forgotten flip-up headlights.It was black, it had cloth seats and a five-speed, crank windows and a radiator and a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that pumped a whopping 130 horsepower to the rear wheels - and that was all! There was nothing better than tossing the top back and heading for the Pacific Coast Highway, heading north toward Malibu and then ducking into a canyon or two before ending up at the Paradise Cove restaurant for dinner and a moonlit drive back home with the ocean off my right shoulder and the cool Los Angeles evening wind whistling across my permanently grinning face.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Matthew DeBord/Business InsiderThe best looking Miata since the original.</div></div></div>I wasn't a big fan of the looks of the Miatas that followed the first generation. The driving was always a joy, but I thought the roadster DNA feel away, replaced by more of a sports-car vibe. The Miata became a mini-Corvette or poor man's Porsche.But the arrival of the fourth-generation production model in 2015 - and with it a crisp redesign, shedding a few inches of scale and an impressive 220 lbs. of weight - means it's back to the future, but with a bigger engine and one more gear on the shifter (and, as you can see from the photo above, narrow, angular headlights, a major improvement over what replaced the flip-ups).I had originally planned to sample the new MX-5 in California, but the timing didn't work out, so the car eventually landed in Business Insider's suburban New Jersey test center - just in time for a winter snowstorm! The $31,000 roadster, with a "blue reflex" paint job, even came with snow tires. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Matthew DeBord/Business InsiderThis isn't roadster weather.</div></div></div>Fortunately, the snow quickly melted and I was confronted with a decision: Top up or top down?The old Miata top was a wonderful throwback and an improvement on the ragtops of old. Roll down the windows, throw a couple of latches, and toss it back into a small compartment behind the seats. The back glass was plastic, however, and notorious for discoloring and cracking.The newest design reduces the latches to one and rolls down the windows for you, and the top itself converts into its own tonneau cover so that you don't need to snap a vinyl one in place (something I usually skipped on my car anyway). When the sun came out and temperature rose to the mid 40s, it was just too tempting.Down went the top!But how to stay warm?Easy: I turned the seat heaters all the way up and set the heater on full blast. And I bundled up: wool scarf, driving cap with ear flaps, and driving gloves.It worked great. I even spent a half hour on the highway and I wasn't a popsicle when it was all over.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Matthew DeBord/Business InsiderTop down, hat on (not to mention seat heaters).</div></div></div>But what about the driving?The snow tires weren't ideal for typical Miata tossing, but they weren't a problem, and they ensured that that a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive car wouldn't be spinning wheels on whatever snowy patches survived the sunshine.I found a stretch of roads about 30 minutes from my house that provided a fine driving test, with lots of curves and windings and a few elevation changes. The Miata needs to be driven in a certain way to extract the most pleasure from the spry machine: you don't baby it - you run the shifts right up to the redline at 7,500 rpm and get back on the throttle fast.You drive the shit out of the thing. The upshot is the impression of velocity, even when going not that fast. And if you do this often, you bond with machine as with no other car, and you become a far more accomplished driver. There is no more ideal car to learn to drive on, in my view.It isn't, however, the best car for dropdowns from fifth to third because the engine doesn't have enough power; 155 horses don't compare well with stonking brutes like the Corvette Z06, with 650 ponies and the desire to be thrashed between third and fifth all day long. But you can get into some nifty throttle-blipping and rev-matching in the Miata as you sling around at about 40 or 50 mph. (For the record, the claimed 0-60 mph time is around 7 seconds.)<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Matthew DeBord/Business InsiderThis is one smooth and quick shifting little car.</div></div></div>Best of all, you never feel that the Miata is beyond your control. The balance is exquisite, a near perfect 50-50 split between front and back. A Porsche Boxster, with its mid-engine design, might on paper look better, but somehow Miata delivers proper a proper roadster feel, while the Boxster is pure sports car. In the Miata, the motor is right up front where it belongs and the back wheels are doing the pushing.Miata's don't give you much when it comes to exhaust note. The burps, burbles, roars, and whines of supercars, Vettes, and BMW M's isn't part of the experience. A touch of rumble and whir is the extent of it. And in fact the noise you want to hear when manhandling the Miata is your own heartbeat, and the rush of the wind, and perhaps a dash of tire squeal here and there.In this car, there isn't much between you and the road - the driving is pure in the way that flying a Sopwith Camel biplane was for aviating in the 1910s. Not as pure as it once was - the modern Miata in Grand Touring trim comes with a shrunken-down version of all the latest technologies, and that means you don't have to pull over to consult paper maps or fiddle with the radio as stations drift in and out.Navigation and Sirius are included in the infotainment package, if simply driving the car and getting lost on some uncharted curlicue of asphalt isn't entertainment enough for you.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Matthew DeBord/Business InsiderThose are supposed to be cupholders.</div></div></div>The Miata is a beloved car with a devoted following in everyone from hardened auto writers to small-town retirees to the amateur competitors who race these marvelous machines. It isn't practical (if you want to play golf, your clubs have to ride shotgun, and the trunk barely holds a pair of overnight bags), the cupholders are in a very odd place, and it's the polar opposite of a family car.You can use it as a daily driver - it's easy on the wallet at the gas pump and even tough it's tiny, the connection with the road and the snappy responsiveness make you feel safe - but it's happiest on weekend jaunts with no particular destination in mind.For the over two decade history of the Miata, the car's motivating force has been the joy of the drive, more than the pleasure of arrival. So it has always been, and with the 2016 version, so it shall always be. It was 45 degree out! I had the top down!
