<ul><li><keyword id="42747" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tata-motors" source="Orion">Tata Motors</keyword> will operate and maintain Tata Starbus for a period of 12 years, as per the contract.</li><li>Tata’s Starbus is developed for sustainable and comfortable travel.</li><li>Earlier, Tata Motors received orders for 1,500 electric buses from Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and 1,180 electric buses from West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC).</li></ul>Tata Motors on Thursday bagged an order to supply 921 electric buses to the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (<keyword id="6371543" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bmtc" source="Orion">BMTC</keyword>). Tata Motors will supply, operate and maintain the 12-metre Tata Starbus for a period 12 years, as per the contract. Tata Starbus is an indigenously developed vehicle that is designed for sustainable and comfortable travel. G. Sathyavathi, Managing Director, BMTC, said, "This order is paramount for Bengaluru's growing need for clean and sustainable urban mass mobility. BMTC is happy to induct modern electric buses that will attract maximum ridership for eco-friendly public transportation." This is the third biggest order that Tata Motors has bagged from a state government in the last one month. Earlier, Tata Motors received orders for 1,500 electric buses from Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and 1,180 electric buses from West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC). Rohit Srivastava, Vice President (Product Line - Buses), Tata Motors, said, ‘We have been at the forefront of developing smart, modern and energy efficient commercial passenger vehicles, catering to the needs of future mobility. Tata Motors bags a 921 e-bus contract from Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation

Bengaluru Municipal Transport Corporation (<keyword id="6371543" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BMTC">BMTC</keyword>) seems to have learnt a lesson or two from cab aggregators <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/small-business/two-new-apps-to-take-on-ola-and-uber-in-ncr/articleshow/57788204.cms">Ola and Uber </a>in order to retain new customers and attract new ones. 
 
The public transport service is all set to reduce fares for its AC buses while also introducing flat rates on some routes like Kempegowda International Airport, three BMTC officials.

While it would decrease the minimum fare from Rs 15 to Rs 10, it would also make cuts in rates for successive stages, which fall at roughly two kms or three bus-stands. 
 
Talking of non AC buses, there would be no change in the minimum ticket price, but for the second stage, the price would most likely drop to Rs 10 from Rs 12. There is no plan to change the fare for successive stages of non AC buses, or daily and monthly passes.

There have been several demonstrations by Bengalureans regarding reduction in these fares and increase in BMTC’s fleet, given that <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/this-is-what-paytms-new-office-in-bengaluru-looks-like/articleshow/57794554.cms">Bengaluru</a> ranks second only after Mumbai when it comes to public transport fares.

Bengaluru public transport service takes cue from Ola and Uber; slashes fares

A three-day deadline has been has been set by the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Transport+Department&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Transport Department</a> for app-based cab aggregators to stop offering <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=carpool&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">carpool</a> or shared services to consumers as the services are in violation of the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Motor+Vehicles+Act&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Motor Vehicles Act</a> and hence cannot be allowed. 
 
According to the Transport Commissioner MK Aiyappa after holding an hour-long meeting with the representatives of aggregators and sections of drivers, told the media that the cabs cannot pick up from and drop passengers at multiple locations before closing each trip. 
 
He also said that the aggregators have asked for three days to make changes in the software that powers the app t which the ministry has conceded the demand and said the transport officials will start booking the violators after the period. 
 The department's decision also follows strong protests from the city's transport utility <keyword id="6371543" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="BMTC">BMTC</keyword>. The letter from BMTC managing director Ekroop Caur says revenues have been hit because of carpool offered by aggregators as well as by other private operators. 
 
"They are also offering services with fixed schedules on specific routes - for example Hebbal to Marathahalli. That is not allowed at all," she told ET. 
 
The cab aggregators, operates under the contract carriage licence which doesn’t allow others to board the cab midway. The stage carriage permit, on the other hand, allows the vehicle (bus) to pick up and drop passengers along its scheduled route. 
 
So this means that BMTC has the exclusive right to pick up and drop a pool of commuters in the city and the permits are issued under the Motor Vehicles Act which is a Union Government legislation. 
 The aggregators also have plans to approach the Union Government to amend <keyword id="54414" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Motor-Vehicle-Act">Motor Vehicle Act</keyword>. 
 
At the meeting with the Transport Commissioner, drivers also requested the department's intervention with the aggregators on the minimum trips they are required to make and the drop in incentives.

Addressing a session on the 'future of mobility' at the Bengaluru Tech Summit 2022 on Friday, Anjum Parwez, Managing Director, Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (<keyword id="6367448" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BMRCL" source="Orion">BMRCL</keyword>), said as part of the second and third phase of the project, Bengaluru will have 314 km of metro rail connectivity by 2041. He said construction of metro lines is also progressing well on the airport side. He said the biggest challenge in urban mobility is the integration of multi-modal transport systems and moving people to get into public transport from personalised transport modes. Parwez said urban India was the most neglected area until the 1990s, as urban planning was not in sync with connectivity or mobility issues. He said BMRCL is getting a lot of support from startups in mobility to ensure that commuters have last-mile connectivity. He said the corporation is tying up with mobility providers to get people to reach the nodal point and commute to their workplaces. Parwez said the <keyword id="6367447" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Namma-Metro" source="Orion">Namma Metro</keyword> has recently gone digital with its payment options that include the use of QR code scans and UPI-based payment options which has met with good response from commuters. Also, there is no waiting time for passengers who are in a hurry as there is no need to stand in queues to buy tickets or cards now. He said BMRCL is working on a transit-oriented development where commuters live close to the stations and to the workplace. Besides, the BMRCL also intends to integrate all aggregators by bringing out a mobility card for commuters. He said the corporation is in talks with BMTC to have bus stops at metro stations to help commuters hop on and hop off both modes of transport. He said bike taxis and carpooling should be encouraged although the government of Karnataka had put brakes on their operation. The BMRCL is also working on introducing shopping options for commuters inside and outside the metro stations. He said the BMRCL plans to sell office space in metro stations and provide end-to-end solutions to all the stakeholders. Amit Bhatt, Managing Director of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), said urbanisation in India is 33 per cent while it is about 80-85 per cent in European and American countries. He said about 66 per cent of urban infrastructure is yet to be built in India as the country is set to see a number of cities being built. The biggest challenge is to ensure zero emission, zero exclusion and zero accidents in urban transport, he said. Vadiraj Krishnamurthy, Vice President of Technology and Innovation, Bosch Global Software Technologies, said the future is software-defined fully programmable vehicles. "The key enablers of urban transport are personalised multi-modal mobility, automated mobility, electrified and connected mobility. Connecting vehicles using technology is an engineering challenge of the future," he said.
