EV ride-hailing firm BluSmart raises USD 24 million

Electric ride-hailing service <keyword id="9349591" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blusmart" source="Orion">BluSmart</keyword> on Tuesday announced it has raised $25 million as part of its extended Series A1 round. In total, the startup has raised $50.7 million as part of its Series A round. BluSmart said that its <keyword id="186291" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ev" source="Orion">EV</keyword> ride-hailing platform aims to add 5,000 electric cars and scale up its EV Superhubs across the Delhi-NCR. "BluSmart has been able to scale 25 times since its launch. BluSmart is creating inclusive and equitable economic opportunities for driver partners who can drive and earn without the hassles of asset ownership," said Anmol Jaggi, Co-Founder and CEO. The startup raised $25 million in fresh funding in $15 million equity and a venture debt of $10 million. The equity round was led by BP Ventures and Green Frontier Capital with participation from existing investors. The venture debt funding comes from Stride Ventures, Alteria Capital, BlackSoil and UCIC. BluSmart has raised $75 million in EV asset financing backed by global development financial institutions to date. BluSmart recently added long-range EVs and has started its all-electric intercity service for its customers to travel from Delhi-NCR to Jaipur and Chandigarh. It continues to scale its service at the Delhi airport and now has presence across all domestic and international terminals. Ride-hailing platform BluSmart raises $25 million, to add 5K electric cars

Leading EV ride-hailing and charging provider <keyword id="9621652" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="BluSmart-Mobility" source="Orion">BluSmart Mobility</keyword> on Thursday said it has raised $42 million in the recent round and will continue to build on its vision of decarbonising the future of transportation in the country. The latest round included an equity round of $37 million and venture debt of $5 million which saw participation from existing energy investors, with almost 50 per cent of the round being subscribed by the BluSmart founders and leadership team. With an all-electric ride-hailing fleet size of 3,500 EVs currently operating in Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru, BluSmart plans to have 10,000 EVs in FY24. "The electrification of public transportation is imminent but the path to electrification has its own challenges. BluSmart tackles these challenges through an integrated and full-stack approach, optimally using and maintaining the EV ride-hailing fleet at scale," said Anmol Singh Jaggi, Co-founder and CEO, BluSmart Mobility. BluSmart's monthly revenue has grown 3 times over the last three quarters and to scale further this funding round will be utilised to penetrate deeper into mega cities, expansion of fleet capacity to 10,000 over the next 1 year. BluSmart recently secured the largest EV asset financing of Rs 633 crore in India, backed by the Power Finance Corporation (PFC), which will add 5,000 EVs to BluSmart's growing fully-electric ride-hailing fleet. BluSmart Mobility raises $42 mn to boost its EV operations in India

Angel investing is one such business that has now become relatively more transparent compared to earlier times and even investors with a ticket size of ₹2.5 lakh a year can now become angel investors. The fallout of this is that great businesses and smart founders now have many more avenues to raise capital without the usual runaround. It is this philosophy that is the driving force behind the four-year-old <keyword id="15097711" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="angel-funding-platform" source="Orion">angel funding platform</keyword> <keyword id="7036829" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Inflection-Point-Ventures" source="Orion">Inflection Point Ventures</keyword> (IPV). Vinay Bansal, CEO and founder of IPV, discovered some obvious pain points that both investors and startup founders faced for the smallest of funding rounds. While the process was tedious for the founders, lack of clarity was a big issue for angel investors. These problems also resulted in a low success rate of <keyword id="2023759" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="startups-in-india" source="Orion">startups in India</keyword>. IPV set out to resolve all three issues with its own unique propositions. “We decided to solve these problems and started investing in a few startups with a sharp focus so that the founders could grow. We also provided them with mentorships. Some of these startups include the likes of Milk Basket and Fitso that went on to become very successful.” IPV decided to do things differently to improve the success rate of startups in India, which also improved returns for investors. In less than four years, IPV has invested in 140 companies and the IRRs (internal rate of returns) are significantly higher compared to many others. India has spawned many unicorns in the last three years, as the pandemic led to innovative models to solve problems thrown up by the lockdowns. India saw 44 unicorns emerge in 2021 and the trend continues in 2022, albeit at a slower pace. Interestingly, the startup bug is not just restricted to the big cities. Today, there’s a startup in each of the 625 districts of India and 50% of these come from Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns. IPV is one of the few players that has had its eyes on such players since 2020. Nearly 10% of its portfolio companies come from the hinterland. Born in 2019, this platform has funded some very interesting startups that nobody was willing to bet on – these were from India’s Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, but were solving problems that are unique to the country’s hinterland. The venture platform is agnostic to sector, stage and geography in which the startup is in. What matters to IPV is the quality of the founder, idea and valuation. “Great people can come from anywhere and we took bets on startups nobody was betting on back in 2020. We go by great ideas that can come from anywhere, which is why we funded BluSmart in Ahmedabad and Multibhashi from Jaipur. These founders are sharp, smart and hardworking to their core,” explains Bansal. Thanks to ventures like IPV, television shows like Shark Tank and a media blitzkrieg are helping more startups in Tier 2 and Tier 3 towns. What also makes IPV unique is that its model of raising capital is more broad-based, which is why its investments are not held hostage by any funding winter or moves made by the Federal Reserve. “We want to continue to democratise investments for average Indians who have a ticket size of ₹5 lakh.” The platform has 7,295 investors on its platform and it continues to grow. “The way we set ourselves up was to be different from others. We were able to fund even during the pandemic and all these investments are between Series B and D today. We went against the market in 2021 and started exiting from our investments. We don’t work on the dry powder concept as we get funds from salaried investors. Over the last couple of months we have cut million dollar cheques. Winters are good for us as we get access to good companies at better valuations. We have to overcome our fear of investing when others are not,” says Bansal. The average ticket size that the angel investors cut out each year ranges between ₹5-7 lakh. IPV’s investors come from not just India but also from other countries. To invest, all that the angel investors need to do is fill a form and get started. The process is equally easy for startups that need funding. Inflection Point Ventures’ focus on great founders takes it to Tier 2 & 3 towns

Venture debt firm Stride Ventures closes a $200 million fund

This was stated by Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal, who is in Singapore for the two-day meet of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) Clean Economy Investor Forum. The meeting, which started on Wednesday, brought together the region's top investors, clean economy companies, and start-ups to mobilise investments into <keyword id="20900661" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sustainable-infrastructure" source="keywords">sustainable infrastructure</keyword>, <keyword id="21246486" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="climate-technology" source="keywords">climate technology</keyword>, and renewable energy projects. The 14-member IPEF bloc was launched jointly by the US and other partner countries of the Indo-Pacific region on May 23, 2022, in Tokyo. Together, they account for 40 per cent of the world's economic output and 28 per cent of trade. The framework is structured around four pillars relating to trade, supply chains, clean economy and fair economy. India has joined all the pillars except the trade. Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, the US, and Vietnam are members of the bloc. Barthwal, during the inaugural IPEF Clean Economy Investor Forum, acknowledged the forum as a unique platform that brought global investors, policy makers, and academia under one roof, which would be instrumental in advancing sustainable infrastructure in the Indo-Pacific Region. The secretary while addressing the forum underlined the huge investment opportunities that "India offers of more than USD 500 billion, particularly in the clean energy value chain including renewables, green hydrogen and EV and its infrastructure transition, by 2030". Barthwal also highlighted key reforms around ease of doing business in India to improve business environment over the last decade. During the two-day event, more than 300 participants from financial institutions, multilateral development banks, venture capital funds, project owners, entrepreneurs and government agencies from IPEF partners actively participated under the sustainable infrastructure and climate tech engagement tracks. In the sustainable infrastructure track, after the screening, "four companies (ReNew Power, Avaada Energy Pvt Ltd, Indusbridge Capital Advisors LLP. Founder, SEIP, and Powerica Ltd) from India were shortlisted for pitching their concepts on energy transition, transport and logistics, and waste management/waste to energy to global investors," the ministry said. Similarly in the climate tech track, 10 Indian startups and companies (BluSmart, Recykal, LOHUM, Sea6 Energy, EVage Ventures, Kabira Mobility, Batx Energies, Newtrace and Alt Mobility, igrenEnergi, Inc.) were selected to pitch their innovative ideas, technologies and solutions that contribute to mitigating or adapting to climate change. Further, the ministry said that the forum resulted in USD 23 billion investment opportunities for sustainable infrastructure projects in the Indo-Pacific. The coalition estimates that its members, taken together, have over USD 25 billion in capital that can be deployed in Indo-Pacific emerging market infrastructure investments in the coming years. DFC's (Development Finance Corporation) Board has also approved an equity investment as part of the USD 900 million Eversource Climate Investment Partners-II fund, which will provide capital, management, and expertise to innovative companies using new and existing capabilities to address climate change in India and Southeast Asia. It added that the IPEF partners and the Private Infrastructure Development Group announced the operational launch of the IPEF Catalytic Capital Fund, which would deploy concessional financing, technical assistance, and capacity-building support to expand the pipeline of quality, resilient, and inclusive clean economy infrastructure projects in emerging and upper-middle income economies, for instance, projects in development include a renewable energy platform in India. The fund's founding supporters include Australia, Japan, Korea, and the US, which plan to provide USD 33 million in initial grant to catalyse up to USD 3.3 billion in private investment. "A coalition of investors, including Singapore's Temasek and GIC, have committed to injecting USD 25 billion in infrastructure investments in emerging markets that are part of an economic alliance between the US and several Asia-Pacific countries," it added. The event also witnessed signing of an offtake agreement between Sembcorp Green Hydrogen India, Kyushu Electric and Sojitz for production and export of 200 KTPA (kilotonne per annum) green ammonia from India to Japan. The programme was attended by ministers from Singapore and Japan and Barthwal. The agreement aims to increase production and export of 200 KTPA green ammonia in Phase-I (total 800 KTPA in 4 phases) at Tuticorin Port in India and export to Japan. The project proposed above would further the objective of the National Green Hydrogen Mission implemented by India towards making the country as global hub for production and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives. During an interaction with Indian companies and startups, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce and India's Chief Negotiator for IPEF Rajesh Agrawal said the forum provides an opportunity for Indian companies and startups to seek funding and collaborate with global investors.

India offers USD 500 billion investment opportunities in clean energy, green hydrogen and EV by 2030

New Delhi, Indian startups have raised $732.7 million across 107 deals in January this year amid layoffs, shutdowns and top-level exits. According to TheKredible's data, there were 70 early-stage deals with a total value of $314.4 million, and 21 growth-stage deals worth $418.3 million. There were 16 undisclosed rounds. In January, the total funding for startups experienced a significant decrease from $1.7 billion in the last month of 2023. It was also the lowest funding amount for January when compared to the last three years, reports Entrackr. Notably, no startup managed to secure funding above $100 million in January. <keyword id="20320433" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vivifi" source="keywords">Vivifi</keyword>, a fintech startup, received the most funding in January, totalling $75 million. AiDash, wow! Momo, <keyword id="20450793" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="impact-analytics" source="keywords">Impact Analytics</keyword>, and BluSmart were among the five most funded companies last month. Layoffs continued to stalk startups, with more than 600 layoffs across three companies. Online food delivery platform Swiggy led the way with 350 layoffs, followed by Cult.fit and InMobi. Flipkart, an e-commerce marketplace, was also in the news for firing over 1,000 employees. In addition to layoffs, several top-level employees left Indian startups. After a year of stellar funding, VCs are deserting this pandemic-driven sector as offline classes resume and young children and adults alike report extreme ‘screen fatigue’ in learning. Beating the screen fatigue However, Ankur Mittal, the partner at Delhi-based VC Physis Capital is not too worried - though he has funded at least nine edtech companies. In fact, he had funded three of them in the last two months. “If you look at edtech only from the prism of exam prep, yes there is saturation because so many startups were funded. In the end, only a few will survive. But there are many kinds of business models that are coming up like hybrid learning and alternate learning with after-school classes which are here to stay,” Mittal told Business Insider India in an interview. Even as actual schooling goes online, after-school classes might continue online because of the convenience that they provide — and they will stand the test of time. Factors like traffic, the inability of parents to drop off and pick up their children from these classes — will ensure that some amount of learning will stay online. “By then, a large part of basic learning will be offline so there would be less of the fatigue too,” claims Mittal. Moreover, people are now used to online learning and the habit will not go away too soon. Music, astro-chats and admissions Inflection Point Ventures has also invested in non-academic edtech startups. One of them is Spardha, which gives music classes online and has seen interest within and outside India in the US, UK, Australia and Canada. “Then we have Homi Labs which holds masterclasses on space and astronauts - things like how an astronaut wears a suit in space. They brought Rakesh Sharma, the first Indian to travel in space to talk to children. This is something even I would be interested in,” says Mittal. Yet another edtech they funded is <keyword id="14126391" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Edvizo" source="Orion">Edvizo</keyword> which helps private universities get students. Large universities with tenured professors and running costs are keen to gain more students and this edtech helps them bring them to it. It also invested in <keyword id="12791615" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Geekster" source="Orion">Geekster</keyword>, an integrated edtech and HR platform that trains people to get tech jobs. “They are running programmes with a job guarantee,” explained Mittal - and he believes all these investments will survive through the edtech fatigue. Good time to invest in edtechs Mittal goes as far as to say that it could be a good time to pick good edtechs and invest in them. For one, no other edtech company will enter the market, the valuations are reasonable and good founders may be able to build good businesses with lower costs. “Any company you invest in now will have a 15-18 month runway to build their business in an economical and efficient fashion without crazy salaries or crazy attrition. People who join now will stay for a long time without expecting a 40-50% bump in their salaries. And the basic reason for the growth of edtechs is lack of change in teaching pedagogy in education hasn’t changed,” he says. The Series B round was raised from marquee investors like Denmark-based private equity firm MAJ Invest, UK-based intact investor Fasanara Capital, the family offices of Dr Harry Banga and Yogesh Mahansaria. The company has been in talks for this round since last August and started signing term sheets in January, Deepak Jain, co-founder of Flexiloan.com, told Business Insider. Former chief executive officer (CEO) of Citigroup Sanjay Nayar — husband of Nykaa’s founder Falguni Nayar — also participated in the round, which included a debt infusion of ₹210 crore ($28 million). The company has raised ₹350 crore to date, which has been used for lending and investment in technology. The six-year-old startup plans to use this capital to scale its micro small and medium enterprises (SME) lending. It also plans to create a technological edge for its ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ (BNPL), supply chain and co-lending services. The company now plans to issue loans upto ₹2,000 crore ($260 millions) —a little more than the loans it has disbursed since its inception — in the next 12 months. Deepak Jain noted that the company was disbursing loans worth ₹25 crore a month during pre-Covid days. The company managed to scale more than four-fold to disburse over ₹100 crore ($14 million) on a monthly basis, leading to an annual run rate of ₹1,200 crore ($160 million). “The $100 million will go to $150 by September and $200 million by March next year. If we are able to go at this pace, we should be able to disburse at least ₹1,500-₹2,000 crore this year. The run rates are improving over a period of time,” Jain explained. The Mumbai-based company now plans to double this run rate over the next year, with its co-lending platform contributing a significant share of growth.
