BlueStacks X lets you play Android games in your computer's browser

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>BlueStacks</span></p><p class="caption">BlueStacks CEO, Rosen Sharma</p></div><p></p></div></div>Over 100 million people have downloaded an app that allows them to run Android applications on their Windows PC or Mac.</p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/bluestacks-android-2011-10-2011-10?IR=T" target="_blank">BlueStacks App Player</a>, built by San Francisco startup BlueStacks, gives people access to thousands of apps that aren't typically available on desktop.</p><p>The milestone was announced in a <a href="http://www.bluestacks.com/blog/introducing-bluestacks-2.html" target="_blank">company blog post today</a>, where the company also revealed a new version of its app, "BlueStacks 2".</p><p>Apps run within BlueStacks on your PC or Mac, and can even be scaled up to full screen.</p><p>Even though Android apps require touch controls to work, BlueStacks says that you can use about 85% of them just as easily with a keyboard and mouse. The obvious exceptions are apps that require smartphone-only functions like accelerometers and a GPS.</p><p>BlueStacks has proved particularly popular with gamers looking to play mobile gaming apps like "Candy Crush" and "Angry Birds" through their computer. The company claims that mobile gamers are more willing to spend significantly more through in-app game purchases when they're playing through their PC.</p><p>"As our product and platform has matured, it has attracted a new genre of gamers," said BlueStacks CEO, Rosen Sharma. "Hardcore PC gamers we find are also into playing midcore mobile games. These users spend a lot of money, which has attracted app developers to our platform in droves. On the other end of the spectrum, apps like messaging and eCommerce also tend to get heavy usage and attract high-value users. The platform has been a boon for advertisers."</p><p>Coinciding with the milestone, BlueStacks also announced that it has updated the app player with a number of new features. Here's everything you need to know.</p><h2><strong>Is BlueStacks safe to use?</strong></h2><p>In general, yes, BlueStacks is safe.</p><p>What we mean is that the app itself is totally safe to download. BlueStacks is a legitimate company that's supported by and partnered with industry power players like AMD, Intel, and Samsung. They've been around for years, and the BlueStacks emulator is considered a great way to run Android apps on your computer.</p><p>Just make sure that you download it <a href="https://www.bluestacks.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">from BlueStacks' official website</a>. The newest version for Mac is called BlueStacks 4, while Windows users can run BlueStacks 5.</p><div type="image" title="BlueStacks' website, advertising its most popular games and industry partners." height="818" width="1780" msid="84655161" hostid="261"></div><h3><strong>Be careful about downloading apps</strong></h3><p>However, the Google Play Store - which is where you'll be downloading the Android apps from - carries some risks. Over the years, cybersecurity researchers have flagged hundreds of Play Store apps that <a href="https://www.techradar.com/news/scammers-use-innovative-google-play-store-ploy-to-trick-users" target="_blank" rel="noopener">carry malware, charge you money for worthless or non-existent products, or track your personal information</a>.</p><p>"You'll need to be careful," Attila Tomaschek, a digital privacy researcher from the cybersecurity firm ProPrivacy, told Insider. "Even if you have downloaded BlueStacks from the official site, you can still download potentially malicious apps from the Google Play Store."</p><div type="image" title="google play" height="1249" width="2500" msid="84655166" hostid="261"></div><p>BlueStacks can protect you from some of these apps, since they're usually designed to work on Android devices, not Macs or PCs. A BlueStacks spokesperson assured Insider that every app is run inside of an "App Container," which makes sure the app can't interact with the rest of your system. And the emulated Android system is run inside of a "secure OS virtualization container, further protecting the user."</p><p>But other threats, like <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-is-phishing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">social engineering or phishing scams that trick you into giving up data</a>, are still dangerous.</p><p>Tomaschek also stresses that even if BlueStacks is trustworthy, you should still adhere to "to basic digital privacy best practices." These include limiting the amount of personal information you share online, never clicking on shady links, and doing research before downloading any app to make sure that it's safe.</p><h2><strong>What data does BlueStacks see?</strong></h2><p>Every app you download gets some amount of access to your device's data. BlueStacks is no exception.</p><p>When you download BlueStacks, you share data in two ways.</p><p>Firstly, when you download BlueStacks, you'll have to log into your Google account. As such, BlueStacks will get access to your name, email address, and any other public information on your Google account. This might include your phone number, gender, address, and picture.</p><p>Secondly, BlueStacks will see some of your computer's data. According to Tomaschek, it'll see "info regarding your OS, hardware, unique device identifiers, and network information." Once you start using it, it'll also "collect and analyze data related to your device, like your device's IP address, location preferences, system configuration data, app activity, transaction timestamps, Android app metadata, and more."</p><p>In other words, BlueStacks will see what browser and computer you're using, your general location, and some information about your computer setup. It sounds like a lot, but it's the sort of data that most modern apps collect.</p><p>A BlueStacks spokesperson told us that they take this info "to make the user experience better," and it helps optimize the app to run well on a variety of different computers. They also said that this data "is not stored in the cloud," meaning in theory they're the only ones with access to it.</p><div type="image" title="Gaming PC" height="1239" width="2479" msid="84655173" hostid="261"></div><p>And it probably won't have any access to your actual files or documents. Dave Hatter, a cybersecurity consultant from InTrust IT, told Insider that both Macs and PCs have pretty strict security when it comes to letting apps read your documents. Unless you've deliberately disabled your computer's built-in security features, or haven't updated it in years, your files will be untouched.</p><h3><strong>BlueStacks has had one major security incident in the past</strong></h3><p>BlueStacks is a popular app that's maintained by a major company with plenty of industry clout. As such, they handle your data pretty carefully.</p><p>However in 2019, <a href="https://www.zdnet.com/article/remote-code-execution-bug-lurked-in-bluestacks-android-emulator/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">security researcher Nick Cano alerted BlueStacks to a major security flaw in the program that could potentially let hackers steal users' personal data and install malware on their computers</a>. BlueStacks patched the vulnerabilities immediately, and it was probably fixed before any hacker had a chance to exploit it.</p><p>Since then, there haven't been any notable issues. A BlueStacks spokesperson told Insider that they "actively [keep] track of updates to open source Android and [apply] the latest patches on a regular cycle, in addition to resolving issues reported directly." They're also led by former members of McAfee, one of the computer world's leading cybersecurity firms.</p><p>But incidents like that highlight why it's so important to keep all your apps fully updated, Tomaschek said. Every update has the potential to fix bugs and patch security exploits before they become a problem.</p><h2><strong>Insider's takeaway</strong></h2><p>If you're looking to safely emulate Android apps, BlueStacks is a safe bet. It comes from a legitimate source and is updated regularly.</p><p>When asked for his overall thoughts on BlueStacks, Hatter said this: "I don't have reason to believe that there's anything wrong with it. Is BlueStacks safe? How to keep yourself protected while using the Android emulator

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Pokémon Go is a smash hit on Android and iPhone, but there's no version at all for Microsoft's struggling Windows 10 Mobile, leaving some would-be players in the cold.<p>And given that Windows 10 Mobile's market share is <a href="http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/23/11743594/microsoft-windows-phone-market-share-below-1-percent">well under 1% of all smartphones globally</a>, there's not a lot of incentive for game developer Niantic to ever make one.&#xa0;</p><p>Fortunately for those few, proud Windows 10 Mobile phone owners, there is an option: "<a href="https://github.com/ST-Apps/PoGo-UWP/releases">PoGo-UWP</a>," a totally unsanctioned and unauthorized effort to bring the&#xa0;Pokémon Go phenomenon to Windows 10, spearheaded by a developer named Stefano&#xa0;Tenuta.&#xa0;</p><p>On the project's <a href="https://github.com/ST-Apps/PoGo-UWP/wiki/Home-(EN)">GitHub Wiki page</a>, Tenuta gives three main reasons for starting the PoGo-UWP project: First, "because learning new things is always cool." Second, "because it could be done." But third, and best of all: "Because Microsoft rejected my job application saying that I wasn't showing enough 'passion', and this proves them wrong :)"</p><p>"B<span>eing rejected is always a good source for motivations, and proving that I'm better than what they thought is one of them," Tenuta tells Business Insider.</span></p><p><span>Tenuta tells Business Insider that his unofficial PoGo-UWP app has had 50,000 unique users opening the app a combined 1.5 million times in the month or so since it was first released. That's a fraction of the many millions of players on the official&#xa0;Pokémon Go app for iPhone and Android, but it's impressive for a niche passion project.</span></p><p>The "UWP" part of the name&#xa0;refers to "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-universal-windows-platform-explained">Universal Windows Platform</a>," Microsoft's new standard for apps that can run on desktops, tablets, and mobile phones alike. That means that if you really wanted to, you could use PoGo-UWP to play&#xa0;<span>Pokémon Go on your Windows 10 PC, too.</span></p><p>Essentially, PoGo-UWP is a donation-funded version of the familiar Pokémon Go app rebuilt from the ground up for Windows 10, one feature at a time. A version of the game that went live on Friday added the Pokédex and the ability to see the items you're carrying. It's not perfect, but it works.</p><p>It connects up to the main <span>Pokémon Go servers, so you can play with your friends on Android and iPhone.</span>&#xa0;Just be advised, before we go any further, that Niantic has been cracking down on the use of unauthorized&#xa0;<span>Pokémon Go tools, and <strong>using PoGo-UWP could get your account banned from the game as a cheater</strong>.</span></p><p>Here's a look at the first version of the game in action. It's apparently come a little ways since this video was uploaded:</p><p><div></div></p><h2>Passion project</h2><p>Tenuta says that he got the inspiration from a fan-made petition going around the internet begging Niantic to bring&#xa0;<span>Pokémon Go to Windows 10 Mobile. That petition&#xa0;had 80,000 signatures when Tenuta saw&#xa0;it, and it gave him the spark of an idea. Plus, as an independent app developer, he thought it might give him some visibility.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>He spent a day doing technical tests to make sure it was possible, and off he went.</span></p><p>The first, extremely basic version of PoGo-UWP dropped at the end&#xa0;of July. On the project's GitHub page, Tenuta says that he was soon bombarded with feature requests, questions, and bug reports, so much so that he ended up spending "<span>the following 3 days working for 24 hours straight to solve them and make people happy."</span></p><p><span>But just shy of two weeks ago, Tenuta writes, he got help in the form of a team of experienced volunteers willing to donate their time to helping him build the project. Which means that lots more features are coming, bringing it just a little bit closer to the original&#xa0;Pokémon Go app with each update.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p><span>"I honestly didn't expect such help from people, but I'm really glad that they're here because I couldn't have done this without them," Tenuta says.</span></p><p><span>Don't hold your breath, though, for the game's signature augmented reality camera mode, or for three-dimensional models of each monster. "I'm just a single dev, I'm not Niantic," Tenuta writes.</span></p><p><span>On that subject, though, he says he's not terribly worried about Niantic shutting his project down, even though it would be entirely within its rights to do so. Unlike most third-party&#xa0;Pokémon Go apps, PoGo-UWP isn't designed to give its users&#xa0;an unfair edge&#xa0;- it's just trying to let Windows 10 Mobile users in on the fun.&#xa0;</span></p><p><span>"This means that we're not harming anyone with this project, but we're giving more users the chance to play their game, and everyone of these users may be a potential customer for their in-app purchases, so this can be a win-win situation for both of us," Tenuta says.</span></p><h2><span>How to use it</span></h2><p>Okay, I'll be honest with you: I don't have a Windows 10 Mobile phone handy, so I tried installing it on a Surface Book.</p><p>Even knowing it's more for phones than laptops, the process of getting PoGo-UWP running&#xa0;was a huge pain, requiring messing with a lot of settings related to&#xa0;installing unofficial apps. Even once I got it running, it was glitchy and unreliable. But, hey, for a free, volunteer-driven project, it ain't bad.&#xa0;</p><p><span>If you want to give it a shot, first and foremost, you need to have or <a href="https://sso.pokemon.com/sso/login?locale=en&amp;service=https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-trainer-club/caslogin">create an account for the game</a>. Second, you need access to an iPhone or Android phone the first time you load up the game, just to select your first&#xa0;Pokémon, since you can't do that from PoGo-UWP. If you're using it on a phone, you really just need to copy over the file and open it. If you're using it on a PC, you need to install a "certificate" file first, which is where I ran into trouble, but enough random fiddling (not advised) made it work just fine.</span></p><p><span></span><span>And then, you're off to the world of&#xa0;Pokémon Go. This often means that a program or app that works on one system won't work on another.</p><p>This is especially true when comparing operating systems like Windows and <keyword id="1608118" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="MacOS">MacOS</keyword>, or completely different devices like a laptop and a PlayStation.</p><p>This is where emulators come in. Emulators can bridge the gap between these devices, allowing programs to work on all sorts of hardware.</p><p>For example, if you have a Windows app that you need to run on your MacBook, you can download the Parallels emulator.
