'What is BlueJeans?': Here's what you need to know about using the video-conferencing service

We got it done last night at 12:10 AM."</strong></li><li><strong>Verizon's acquisition of BlueJeans combines a major telecommunications network with one of the most widely-used video conferencing platforms - even as it faces competition from Microsoft, Cisco, and upstarts like Zoom.</strong></li><li><strong>Ramakrishan predicts a consolidation in the videoconferencing space as the sudden pivot to a remote workforce highlights the importance of the technology.</strong></li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary"><strong>Click here for more BI Prime stories.</strong></a></li></ul><p>On Thursday, Verizon announced its intent to acquire BlueJeans Network, a videoconferencing company first founded in 2009.</p><p>BlueJeans cofounder and Executive Chairman Krish Ramakrishnan said the startup had been exploring a possible sale to Verizon for months. </p><p>The coronavirus crisis forced the two companies to work faster on a merger, which they completed the way corporate deals are now done in the age of COVID-19. </p><p>"Imagine a transaction of this nature just done on video when everybody is working from home," Ramakrishnan told Business Insider. "Even the due diligence was done from home. Never happened. We got it done last night at 12:10 AM."</p><p>The merger, which Ramakrishnan said was worth about $500 million, underscores the heightened importance of videoconferencing platforms given the sudden rise of the remote workforce. In its lifespan, BlueJeans had raised some $175 million from investors including New Enterprise Associates, Accel, and even baseball legend Derek Jeter. </p><p>BlueJeans will become a division of Verizon. Ramakrishnan said he will continue with his current role, which is focused on product innovation and strategy. There will be no layoffs at BlueJeans, he said: "That is the promise."</p><h2><strong>The rise of videoconferencing</strong></h2><p>BlueJeans competes with other fast-growing platforms such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Hangouts which have seen a spike in user traffic after the pandemic forced millions of employees worldwide to work from home.</p><p>"We had, I kid you not, 300% increase in video traffic and usage in just three months," Ramakrishnan said.</p><p>So why sell now?</p><p>"It's a tough decision," he said. "You always want to continue by yourself, to take it to the next level, and build and build and build."</p><p>But it also became clear that being part of Verizon would give BlueJeans access to a "huge sales team" and cutting edge 5G and edge computing technologies. Ramakrishnan said merger discussions had been going on for some months when the pandemic hit.</p><p>"I was afraid the talks would break down because of the shutdown," he said.</p><h2><strong>Industry consolidation </strong></h2><p>But the opposite happened, he said. The talks "accelerated because of the use case of everybody working from home."</p><p>"Until now, work from home was a convenience that people thought was  okay for certain people," he said. "What this pandemic has taught is lots of people can actually work from home. It's going to be the new norm."</p><p>Video conferencing clearly will become a more widely used technology which Ramakrishnan said will lead to a big shift in the industry, exemplified by the Verizon-BlueJeans merger.</p><p>"Definitely, there's going to be consolidation," he said. "There's going to be consolidation on the video platform and maybe adjacent telephony platforms because everything is about collaboration. And I think it's going to happen because of this work from home phenomenon."</p><h2><strong>Why BlueJeans?</strong></h2><p>For Ramakrishnan, the Verizon merger marks the end of the journey of a startup he launched 11 years ago, when video conferencing was still an unfamiliar tool for many people.</p><p>He wanted to change that, and even the name he picked for the startup underscored his goal of coming up with a product that would be "easy to use, easy to approach, and something very familiar for everybody."</p><p>"I came up with 'BlueJeans,'" he said. "It's casual. And you can actually go in style if you wear a jacket. It fits the enterprise, as well as work from home. You just need a clean shirt or something. So it applies to all situations. In a meeting held on Wednesday, the leadership team told employees that it's making the job cuts because the company moved up its timeline to reach profitability by a year to the fiscal year that ends on January 31, 2020, these people said.</p><p>A representative from BlueJeans declined to comment, instead pointing to a blog post by BlueJeans CEO Quentin Gallivan published <a href="https://www.bluejeans.com/blog/ceo-update-bluejeans">on Thursday</a> that said the company will become "profitable and operating cash flow positive over the next few months."</p><p>The change at BlueJeans shows how Silicon Valley's growing focus on profitability is now trickling down to smaller startups too. After a number of high-profile startups, like Uber and Lyft, struggled post-IPO, and WeWork's attempt to go public failed amid spiraling losses, investors are shifting their attention towards profitability over growth.</p><p>Just this week, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/12/03/postmates-has-layoffs-and-shuts-mexico-city-office.html">CNBC</a> reported delivery startup Postmates cut dozens of jobs, while <a href="https://www.theinformation.com/articles/silicon-valley-braces-for-belt-tightening">The Information</a> reported home-buying startup Opendoor and the mattress maker Casper both made moves to slow their expansions. That follows recent layoffs at car-subscription company Fair and software maker UiPath, according to the <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/silicon-valley-adjusts-to-new-reality-as-100-billion-evaporates-11574764205">The Wall Street Journal</a>.</p><h2>Seeking a sale</h2><p>BlueJeans has raised over $175 million since its founding in 2009 from investors including big VC firms like NEA and Accel, as well as former baseball player and Miami Marlins CEO and part owner Derek Jeter. The bulk of the investments came in the three-year period between 2012 and 2015, when BlueJeans amassed over $150 million in funding and saw its valuation more than triple to approximately $727 million, according to Pitchbook.</p><p>But more recently, the company was rumored to be positioning itself to be acquired. <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-06-10/derek-jeter-backed-blue-jeans-network-is-said-to-explore-a-sale">Bloomberg</a> reported in June that it was "exploring a sale," following the breakout success of competitor Zoom. In 2017, the company named Gallivan as its <a href="https://www.bluejeans.com/blog/in-good-company-introducing-quentin-gallivan">new CEO</a>, replacing cofounder Krish Ramakrishnan. In April, it <a href="https://www.bluejeans.com/blog/bluejeans-enterprise-choice-collaboration-and-productivity">said</a> it's passed $100 million in annual recurring revenue.</p><p>For BlueJeans, the workforce reduction will likely lead to more static growth going forward. The layoffs largely affect sales and marketing roles, with some of the top sales executives let go as well, sources familiar with the matter told Business Insider. Without a large enterprise sales force to help grow the business, BlueJeans is likely to focus on keeping its existing customers, like Facebook and Starbucks. Multiple c-suite roles were included in the job cuts, these people said.</p><p>During Wednesday's meeting, BlueJeans leaders told employees that they felt "horrible" about the layoffs and apologized for announcing it during the holiday season, according to sources familiar with matter. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>Moveworks is a cloud startup that uses AI and natural language processing to process <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> IT tickets faster and more efficiently.</strong></li><li><strong>Moveworks says it can resolve within minutes problems that typically take days to resolve.</strong></li><li><strong>The idea, the company says, is to augment the most repetitive tasks performed by an IT department, not to replace them. </strong></li><li><strong>The company has raised $30 million from VC investors, including Bain Capital and Lightspeed.</strong></li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/prime?module=article&amp;area=summary"><strong>Click here for more BI Prime stories.</strong></a></li></ul><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bhavin Shah and his co-founders at Moveworks spent most of their careers finding ways to use technology to do things faster and more efficiently.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They decided to start the </span>AI company, which has raised $30 million from such VCs as Bain Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners, <span style="font-weight: 400;">to take on a field that can be frustratingly slow and inefficient: tech support. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It's the world of support tickets, emails or chat messages employees send to their company's IT team when they need to unlock an account, to access a file, or to upgrade a program on their laptop that they forgot they needed to be done before a big trip.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moveworks uses AI and natural language processing to do those tasks faster, fixing basic problems that typically take three days to resolve in minutes, even seconds. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Shah said enterprise IT tickets may seem like "one of the most dull topics" for a startup, but he said: "This is an area of need that hasn't been solved because we continue to use people and workflows to keep employees productive."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The tool is integrated into a company's email or a messaging platform, such as Slack or Google Chat. In most cases, the company boasts, all an employee has to do is send a message on the issue. The Moveworks tool, using natural language processing, is able to quickly determine the problem or request. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The tool can automatically resolve basic requests or issues, such as unlocking an account, gaining access to a document or being added to a distribution list. Other tasks that require specific approvals may take a bit longer, but are still processed faster than if they were part of a queue managed by an IT staff, the company says. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Shah cited the example of a client company's executive who sent an email requesting access to a report. He sent the email on a Saturday not expecting a response until Monday. But the Moveworks tool quickly gave him access to the document in question.</span></p><h2><strong>Prominent customers</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The technology is already used by prominent tech companies such as Autodesk, the design and engineering software company, the storage maker Western Digital, and chipmaker Broadcom.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Shah said Moveworks is addressing a key area for businesses, one that chief information officers and IT teams "have to manage but hasn't seen much innovation."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Because there is an explosion of technology solutions in the workplace, there are lots of systems that we all have to navigate," Shah told Business Insider. "When everything is working perfectly, it's great. You're hyperproductive."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But a minor glitch or a change, such as a new piece of equipment or a software upgrade, can throw things off or employees, he said. Suddenly, "there's a lot of unfamiliarity," Shah said. "How do I do that again? What was the setting to do that?"</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moveworks was launched three years ago and just came out of stealth mode a few months ago. Shah, the company's CEO, is a serial entrepreneur whose last startup, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-acquires-refresh-2015-4">Refresh</a>, an app which offers insights into people in your network shortly before a meeting, was acquired by LinkedIn.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">He said he has one thing in common with his co-founders: "We've been spending chunks of our careers focusing on making things really, really fast."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of them, Jiang Chen, was part of the Google team that developed the search feature that quickly served up a response snippet to a Google search question. The feature was based on natural language processing technology that Moveworks is also using. Another co-founder, Varun Singh, helped Facebook streamline recruiting through machine learning. </span></p><h2><strong>Better productivity</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Automating these processes through AI leads to profound improvements in productivity, he said. Moveworks currently resolves 20% to 35% of issues for current customers, up from 10% to 15% a year ago, he said.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Shah said he and his co-founders -- which includes Vaibhav Nivargi, another tech entrepreneur </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">-- developed the technology by consulting chief information officers.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"We sat down with several dozen CIOs and we started conversations with them about what they were working on," and what were the key issues they were dealing with, he said.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Those conversations and their analysis of IT ticketing data from different companies led to a key insight: IT teams deal with generally the same issues and technologies.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, most issues related to video teleconferencing involved vendors like Zoom, GoToMeeting, Webex and BlueJeans. Hardware issues typically involved problems that come up with Apple's MacBooks, or with Windows PCs manufactured by Dell, Lenovo, or Hewlett-Packard.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Having that data meant they could actually develop a technology focused on key areas and tasks of IT support that have not been addressed meaningfully despite the rise of new technologies.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></span></p><h2><strong>Giving CIOs a hand</strong></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Everyone is solving the same problems," Shah said. "We felt that this was a huge opportunity to take something off the plate of the CIOs...they and their teams don't want to do these mundane tasks. They want to work on other things like maybe a big upgrade or maybe a new data center or something that's more exciting."</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One such customer is Autodesk. The company's chief information offier, </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Prakash Kota, said Moveworks helped his team rapidly deal with basic IT problems that used to take several hours to solve. With Moveworks' tool, issues are resolved "within minutes," Kota told Business Insider. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">"It started giving simpler experiences to employees," he said.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moveworks' technology benefits CIOs and IT teams in another way, Shah said. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"CIOs have to keep the lights on," Shah said. "They have to keep the system running. In fact, their reputations are largely based on employees' perception of how fast IT is. If IT is slow and it takes five days to get something done, the CIO can be amazing and keep the company secure and no one hacked the system and deploy new stuff all the time, but if it takes four days to get a license for Docusign, employees are like, 'Well, this IT team isn't any good.'"</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Of course, the innovation Moveworks offers could mean reducing the need for IT staff to deal with the issues that today are still addressed by people. In other words, smaller IT teams and fewer jobs for IT people. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">Shah offers a different view, as he downplayed the widely-shares worries that AI would lead to major job losses in tech.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"The reality is there is more IT work than there are IT workers," he said. "That's why the process to get simple employee issues resolved is so slow.We're automating routine tasks that IT workers don't want to do. Startup Moveworks has raised $30 million to use AI to automate the most common IT tasks - but it doesn't want to replace the IT department

It's one of a flock of new services that is trying to kill off email and transform how companies organise internally, alongside the likes of Slack and Microsoft Teams.</p><p>"We've done every possible mistake we could have done," the French-born, London-based executive admitted. "The pricing was wrong, the way we'd gone to market back in the day was wrong."</p><p>Today, two years after launch, Workplace has more than 30,000 customers, including Walmart, Spotify, the World Wildlife Fund, and Virgin Atlantic.</p><p>But Codorniou's remarks - made in an interview with Business Insider to mark his inclusion on the UK Tech 100, an annual ranking of the coolest people in the British technology industry - illustrates the hurdles that can befall even the biggest companies in trying new things, and the radical changes required to succeed.</p><h2>From dissatisfied auditor to Facebook executive</h2><p>Codorniou, 40, grew up in Paris, and says he knew he wanted to work in software since he was eight years old. "I had a computer at home, a British computer, an Amstrad computer, but I did not know it was an industry," he said.</p><p>"I did not realise people actually made a living building apps and games every day. So when I realised that, I knew I would be doing that for the rest of my life. There was no other option."</p><p>But he got there via a circuitous route: First, working in venture capital investment after graduating, and then joining the auditor Ernst &amp; Young - a job he hated - to improve his financial prowess.</p><p>"People who know me will tell you I don't behave or I don't look like a financial auditor ... I went to financial auditing like people go to the army: To learn something tough, to do something that they have to do to get stronger. It's painful for a few years, but you feel much stronger after that."</p><p>It was after that that he finally made the jump into the world of tech, working at Microsoft, and then moving to Facebook in 2011. At the Menlo Park, California, company he first did work on platforms, then helped lead the gaming partnership efforts.</p><p>Meanwhile, what would one day become Workplace was growing behind the scenes.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p><p class="caption">Workplace: It's like Facebook, but grey.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>Facebook Workplace is Facebook, for workplaces</h2><p>Workplace is basically Facebook for work. It operates in much the same way, with private messages, groups, public posts, and so on. It began life as a purely private project at the company - a way for Facebook employees to communicate and coordinate. </p><p>But following inbound interest, Codorniou said the decision was made to start offering it to outside organisations, and the company started looking for someone suitable to lead these efforts. And that's where Codorniou, with his SaaS (software-as-a-service) experience from Microsoft, came in.</p><p>In those early days around its 2016 launch, he admitted, Facebook made mistakes.</p><p>"When we started, we thought Workplace would be a product you could sell online without building a sales team ... with a lot of virality, and guess what? It did not happen," he said. "The way we sell Workplace today is company-by-company ... with sell cycles of a few months."</p><p>Facebook, with its historic focus on advertising, had simply never done anything like this before: Selling subscription SaaS software directly to business customers.</p><p>In building the team, Codorniou set a goal: 50% of Workplace employees should be from Facebook, and 50% should be outside hires.</p><p>"I wanted to bring the Facebook DNA. The ambitions for the product, for the mission ... that obsession with growth," he said. "But I also wanted to build a SaaS product that had a lot of credibility when I talk to IT, when I try to sell to companies." As such, Workplace hires have come from Microsoft, Slack, Salesforce, Dropbox, Box, and beyond.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p><p class="caption">Really grey.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>The future of Workplace</h2><p>Today, Workplace has grown to more than 30,000 corporate customers - more than double <a href="https://www.computerworld.com/article/3230189/collaboration/a-year-after-launch-how-has-facebook-workplace-fared.html">it had around this time last year</a>. Slack, by comparison, has 70,000 paying customers, while a further 430,000 organisations use it for free. </p><p>Workplace is increasingly integrating other software directly into it, from SurveyMonkey to BlueJeans, and Marketo, tying users ever-more closely into its ecosystem. And it now offers <a href="https://workplaceblog.fb.com/news/workplace-for-good/">"Workplace for Good,"</a> a free (and fully featured) version of its product for non-profits and educational organisations around the world. </p><p>It's also a rare thing among the big American tech companies: A significant product that is led not from Silicon Valley, but Europe. "The goal has always been for Workplace to build it out of the US, and to prove that a company like Facebook can build something completely different but yet very ambitious from London," the exec said.</p><p>Looking forward, Codorniou sees the future of Workplace in emerging economies. (There were previously just 10 integrations.)</p><p>The announcements comes at an turbulent time for Facebook. The social network is battling with the fallout of the Cambridge Analytica scandal, and is significantly locking down its platform to developers amid broader privacy concerns - to the chagrin of many developers. It's perhaps no surprise then that Facebook is making very clear that this is not the company throwing open the floodgates to anyone who fancies it.</p><p>"This is not an open platform, we're not opening the doors to everybody here," Facebook Workplace product manager Simon Cross told Business Insider. </p><p>Instead, developers who think they might be a good fit for an integration need to register their interest and then pass a rigorous review process, including an independent security audit. Facebook doesn't have a target for how fast it wants to grow the integrations available, Cross said: "We're prioritizing quality over growth."</p><p>It's a markedly different approach to <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="enterprise">enterprise</keyword> chat app Slack, a close competitor of Workplace - which allows anyone to build integrations and bots for its service.</p><h2>Talk to the bot</h2><p>So how do Workplace integrations work in practice for users? Let's say your company uses Workplace to coordinate, while you use Box for storing most of your files and SurveyMonkey for doing online research. Using the Workplace interface, you'll be able to (assuming the integration is activated) search for your files and comment on them with coworkers, while SurveyMonkey might post automatic updates into groups that can be used as a starting point for team conversations.</p><p>The theory is that it saves time and boosts efficiency by bringing everything together under one (Facebook-owned) roof.</p><p>The integrations fall into three categories, Cross said: Sharing, notifications, and "transactional workflows." In the first instance, you might share files, or to-do-lists, or documents from another app with your colleagues.</p><p>In the second, your team might get notifications from apps you use to stay up-to-date - a category that includes feeds from news organisations (disclosure: Business Insider is one of the companies that has a Workplace integration, Cross said.) Facebook is turbo-charging its plan to invade the workplace by partnering with everyone from Dropbox to Adobe

And that means more startups are struggling to cut costs are or are running out of money and failing outright.</p><p>Startups valued by their investors at over a billion are called unicorns, because they were once thought to be so rare. In 2014 and 2015, money flowed so freely, unicorns became more like cockroaches.</p><p>In 2016, a few richly-valued startups have hit rough patches.</p><p>While all of this sounds like a bad thing for the startup world, it turns out, many startup CEOs are happy and relieved about the changing environment.</p><p>That's because cash-rich startups can no longer poach their engineers by offering to double or triple their salaries and piling on bonuses and stock options. </p><p>One CEO told us he had hired some engineers away from Google only to lose them to a cash-rich unicorn who offered them a $1 million compensation package. </p><h2>Engineers getting CEO-like salaries</h2><p>At the Rutberg Future Mobile Summit, taking place in the Bay Area this week, a panel of other CEOs told similar tales.</p><p>One of them was Mohit Lad, the CEO of ThousandEyes, which offers a service that helps troubleshoot network problems for companies using cloud computing services. </p><p>"I feel good about a correction where companies can't just raise crazy money and throw crazy salaries at our employees," <span>Lad</span> said during a panel discussion at the show.</p><p>Lad, has raised about $60 million for ThousandEyes so far, including a round that closed in February, after the money started to get tight.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Blue Jeans Network </span></p><p class="caption">Blue Jeans Network CEO Krish Ramakrishnan</p></div><p></p></div></div>He said that employees have gotten duped by the situation too. Three of his employees got poached by a newly funded, cash-rich startup and wound up unemployed months later, when the startup couldn't sustain itself and coudn't raise more money in this environment.</p><p><span>Lad had to </span>change hiring tactics during the boom. </p><p>"We never want to be the highest-paid offer that comes in. We want to be second best. I don't want them to come to the company because we're paying the most. I want them to come because it's a mission they believe in, and once here, we take care of employees so they are always happy."</p><p>The strategy has worked. One of his engineers was offered double his salary by a startup some months ago but turned it down. "He stayed and is doing well," Lad said.</p><p>BlueJeans Network CEO Krish Ramakrishnan, also on the panel, agreed. "For companies with strong fundamentals, this is the best thing we could ask for. Employees aren't moving to unicorns offering things like free massages."</p><p>He said that some engineers were being offered "CEO like" salaries to join startups. </p><p>BlueJeans offers a cloud videoconferencing service and has raised its fair share of money about $175 million, including a $76 million round last fall, right as things started to get tight.</p><p>Ramakrishnan says that normal engineering salaries aren't coming down. The big, established companies like Google and Facebook are still paying top dollar and keeping competition high.</p><p>But the crazy double or triple salary poaching offers have abated, he said.</p><h2>Bye-bye copycats</h2><p>Meanwhile, Dan Teran, CEO of Managed by Q, says that for startups that have good revenue growth and cash-flow, investment is still available. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Managed By Q</span></p><p class="caption">Managed by Q founders Saman Rahmanian (left) and Dan Teran (right).</p></div><p></p></div></div>It just takes more convincing to get VCs to bite.  Managed by Q is a two-year old startup for office management services in New York like janitorial services, catering, snack stocking, and office supplies.</p><p><span>Teran has </span>raised over $42 million so, including a $25 million series B round that closed in April. One of its investors is Google Ventures who had backed a company called HomeJoy, a similar marketplace for hiring cleaning and maintenance people. <a href="https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/248579">HomeJoy closed its doors last fall.</a></p><p>"Google Venture had just had HomeJoy eat the dust. It had raised a ton of money and really crashed and burned. The partners in the room grilled me," Teran recalls. "But we had strong fundamentals."</p><p>Since Managed by Q has become a buzzy startup in New York he says he's seen a handful of "copycat" competitors launch and struggle to raise money. Why Valley engineers are no longer being poached for $1 million in pay

<ul class="summary-list"><li><strong>On Thursday, online payments startup Stripe announced $600 million in new funding that values the company at $36 billion - up slightly from its $35 billion valuation in September.</strong></li><li>Stripe cofounder and president John Collison tells Business Insider that it chose to raise funding now because it's in a position of strength: Even before the coronavirus crisis led to a boom in online shopping and in-app purchasing, Stripe had signed big new customers like Mattel and NBC.</li><li>Now, its business is accelerating as new customers like Zoom turn to Stripe's technology to accept payments from a crush of new customers, Collison says, and the company wants the funds to ensure that it can continue hiring and developing its product to keep pace. </li><li>Collison also says that Stripe is open to acquiring smaller startups amid any possible market downturn, but that the company is trying to be thoughtful and only cut deals where it makes sense for the business. </li><li>In the bigger picture, Stripe has been positioning itself to go after larger enterprise customers, and Thursday's announcement shows that it's been making progress in that regard.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>On Thursday, payments startup <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stripe-raises-250-million-35-billion-valuation-2019-9">Stripe announced that it had raised $600 million in new capital</a> at a sky-high $36 billion valuation from Andreessen Horowitz, GV (formerly Google Ventures), Sequoia, General Catalyst, and other investors. </p><p>The funding was technically an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stripe-raises-250-million-35-billion-valuation-2019-9">extension of the $250 million Series G round it closed in September,</a> and increased its valuation only slightly from $35 billion. The company indicated at the time that it would not seek an IPO any time soon and there's no sign that anything's changed since. </p><p>The raise marks one of the few big-money venture deals closed amid the coronavirus crisis, as investors hunker down and prepare for what could be a recession of indeterminate length. John Collison, cofounder and president of Stripe, says it's that very same uncertainty that drove it to seek more funding.</p><p>"We think the dislocation could be here for a while," Collison tells Business Insider. "It's not clear what the rest of 2020 looks like. It's not clear what the rest of 2021 looks like." </p><p>At the same time, Collison says, the funding comes as Stripe enjoys a position of strength: The company said on Thursday that it has over $2 billion on its balance sheet, and that it had already signed big customers like Mattel, NBC, and food-delivery app Caviar in the first few months of the year. As shelter-in-place orders and remote work have led to a surge in online shopping and in-app buying, Stripe has seen a "big spike in signups," from new customers turning to its technology to help accept payments from their own apps and websites, Collison says. For example, mega-popular video chat tool Zoom just signed on.  </p><p>While Collison acknowledges that the "natural response" of many companies is to "hold back" and cut costs due to the tumult in the global economy, the right move for Stripe right now is to speed up its own growth, not slow it down.</p><p>"We want Stripe to be able to keep investing," Collison said, even amid what he described as the "weird COVID times." </p><h2>"M&amp;A favors the prepared mind and the prepared balance sheet"</h2><p>Specifically, Stripe plans to invest in people, product, and infrastructure. </p><p>As businesses <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/list-vc-backed-layoffs-coronavirus-recession-tech-retail-media-realestate-2020-4">in all industries announce layoffs</a>, Stripe wants to be able to continue hiring, especially as it expands its geographic reach into new countries like Romania and Hungary. Its product and infrastructure are more important than ever now, too, as customers rely on Stripe to keep their businesses running online. </p><p>Acquisitions are also on Collison's mind, too. </p><p>There's been plenty of chatter that the crisis and subsequent market uncertainty will drive new waves of consolidation: A cofounder of videoconferencing company BlueJeans Network <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bluejeans-verizon-acquisition-coronavirus-merger-consolidation-2020-4">specifically said that the pandemic accelerated its acquisition talks with Verizon</a>, culminating in a deal valued at around $500 million, also announced on Thursday.</p><p>Collison says that Stripe sees this kind of M&amp;A as "the sensible thing to do," and that the company is always looking for good opportunities to buy startups.</p><p>At the same time, though, Collison says that Stripe won't swoop in on a company just because the crisis makes it a cheap target: It plans to spend its money wisely on startups that make "any useful sense" to the business. Ultimately, though, the company is well-positioned to cut deals, he says. </p><p>"M&amp;A favors the prepared mind and the prepared balance sheet," Collison says. </p><h2>Stripe is going after new kinds of customers</h2><p>In terms of its business strategy, Stripe has previously said that a major focus going forward is chasing after larger enterprise customers. It already counts Airbnb, Amazon, and Target as clients; the addition of the new customers announced on Thursday shows some progress in that regard. </p><p>Collison highlights some of the new challenges and opportunities afforded by the pandemic, saying that Stripe has been "trying to adapt" by taking steps like making it easier for a business to get started with the product and by racing to ensure that its infrastructure can keep up with the skyrocketing demand that some of its customers are seeing, like grocery delivery app Instacart. Collison says that Stripe is now "core internet infrastructure" for its users, which rely on it to power their respective businesses.</p><p>He also says that the pandemic has been an opportunity for Stripe to bring on a whole new type of customer: telemedicine services which let users consult medical professionals via their smartphone, like Solv. </p><p>Collison says that while Stripe didn't support those kinds of companies before, he's happy that it can help them now in this moment of crisis. He also sees the growth of those kinds of companies as a sign of things to come in the field.</p><p>"It really feels like a new category of market and product," Collison said.</p>

The main options are found at the top: New Meeting, Join, Schedule, and Share Screen. Below, you'll see recent call and chat history, along with any outstanding Contact Requests. Tap to view the chat with any contact or to accept a request. Search for contacts at the top of the page. Tap the plus symbol in the top-right corner to open a pop-up menu to add a contact, create a new channel, or join a public one. <p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p><p class="caption">Organizations on Facebook Workplace can use professional camera equipment to broadcast live videos to their employees.</p><p>Facebook is making big moves with its chat tool for businesses, Workplace.</p><p>The social giant is most notably <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/facebook-free-workplace-microsoft-google-slack-2017-4">working on a free version</a> of Workplace, which creates a private version of Facebook for any size organization, that it plans to make available in the coming months.</p><p>Workplace is Facebook's bet against Microsoft, Slack, Google, and other companies in the competitive world of enterprise software. Facebook is placing its stake in the ground on Tuesday by announcing that over 14,000 organizations, from Viacom to Singapore's government, are now using Workplace since the service launched publicly in October 2016.</p><p>Here are some of the new features coming to Workplace on Tuesday: </p><ul><li>Integrations with file and cloud storage providers like Box (Facebook already lets businesses upload and host videos on Workplace for free).</li><li>The ability to shoot live videos using professional camera and mixing equipment through Facebook's API.</li><li>The ability to conduct video conferences and live webinars with the app BlueJeans.</li><li>Integrations with compliance partners to allow the exporting of documents and chat logs during the legal discovery process.</li><li>Support for custom chat bots.</li></ul><p>Workplace product manager Simon Cross told Business Insider that the service's success is largely due to the fact that 1.8 billion people already use Facebook every month. Since Workplace is an ad-free, private version of Facebook (complete with News Feed, groups, and private chat), it's instantly familiar.</p><p class="source"><span>Facebook</span></p><p class="caption">Facebook Workplace looks identical to normal Facebook, minus the ads.</p><p>"The key thing that we've heard loud and clear from our customers is that everybody just knows how to use it straight away," said Cross. He noted that organizations are quickly joining Workplace because "they are buying into our ability to dramatically improve the speed of the product. We're really good at shipping new stuff quickly and safely to billions of people."</p><p>The Workplace team within Facebook is currently working on making the service more accessible to businesses that normally wouldn't use a software chat tool like Slack, according to Cross. Facebook wants people to be able to sign up without a work email address and use Workplace on low-end Android phones, a strategy that's in line with Facebook's overall company ethos. </p><p>Cross said Workplace will also be able to help teams communicate with other partners outside of their own organization.
