What if we told you that you could potentially improve your sex life and reduce your risk of getting dementia — both of which are health conditions plaguing a large sect of modern society — at the price of one little magical blue pill? Towards the end of the 20th century, the FDA-approved Viagra was all set to hit the markets.<br /><br />The drug was a huge success and even had the promiscuous <em>Playboy </em>publisher Hugh Hefner singing its praises. Whether they would like to admit it or not, lots of people worldwide began to consume Viagra, and the drug became quite popular even in India.<br /><br />With Pfizer having lost its patent in some parts of the world over the drug around that time, copies of the drug were being sold under various aliases available at a tenth of the original’s cost. Between 2010 and 2018, Viagra sales in India had shot up by 40% as per the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists.<br /><br />While it is great that the sense of shame attached to erectile dysfunction has somewhat dipped amongst Indian men, doctors have had mixed reviews about the drug’s prolonged usage. The drug’s side-effects can kick in rather prominently in those suffering from other comorbidities, after all. However, there’s also a good chance that a lot of men might’ve inadvertantly reduced their chances of losing their memories to dementia and other neurological conditions.<br /><cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Viagra use has been linked to reduced risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia in men" comment="subhead" text="Viagra use has been linked to reduced risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia in men"><span data-til="noop">Viagra use has been linked to reduced risk of Alzheimer’s and dementia in men</span></cmsannotation>Earlier this year, researchers at University College London published their <a href="https://www.neurology.org/doi/10.1212/WNL.0000000000209131">findings</a> on nearly 270,000 men who were all 40 or older and had been diagnosed with erectile dysfunction between the years 2000 and 2017.<br /><br />They found that men who had been prescribed erectile dysfunction drugs like sildenafil (Viagra) and tadalafil (Cialis) had an 18% lesser chance of developing Alzheimer’s later on in life compared to men who hadn’t been given the drug in question. This link was even stronger among those who had been issued the most prescriptions — a whopping 44% lower.<br /><br />More recently, <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCRESAHA.124.324327">new trials</a> conducted by the <keyword id="19978045" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="University-of-Oxford" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="University of Oxford" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="University of Oxford">University of Oxford</keyword> revealed that sildenafil didn’t just increase blood flow to the penis, but also to the brain, improving the function of brain blood vessels in patients at a heightened risk of <keyword id="22014717" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vascular-dementia" source="keywords">vascular dementia</keyword>.<br /><br />Vascular dementia can impact cognitive functions such as memory, reasoning and judgement due to reduced blood supply to the brain, which damages brain tissue. In vascular dementia, obstructions in blood vessels usually lead to brain cell damage. This condition is different from <keyword id="20483111" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alzheimers" source="keywords">Alzheimer's</keyword>, where cognitive dysfunction is caused by amyloid beta plaques blocking neuron connectivity.<br /><br />According to Dr Alastair Webb, Associate Professor at the Wolfson Centre for Prevention of Stroke and Dementia at Oxford University, this is the first trial that shows sildenafil gets into the blood vessels in the brain in people with this condition, improving blood flow and how responsive these blood vessels are.<br /><br />“This demonstrates the potential of this well-tolerated, widely-available drug to prevent dementia, which needs testing in larger trials,” he says.<br /><br />Scientists agree this is a promising area of study. But more evidence is needed to understand how the drugs affect the brain and figure out the optimal dosage. More importantly, scientists also want to see if the benefits extend to women.<br />

<ul class="summary-list"><li>A man died after he took the maximum dose of <strong>sildenafil, a </strong>generic form of Viagra, with alcohol.</li><li>An autopsy revealed that he had a stroke, and signs of long-standing high blood pressure.</li></ul><p>A man died from a stroke after he took a high dose of a generic form of <a href="https://www.insider.com/viagra-can-keep-cut-flowers-fresh-for-an-extra-week-2021-2">Viagra</a> — which probably wasn't prescribed — with alcohol, <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1752928X23000227" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to a report.</a> </p><p>The night before he got sick, the unnamed 41-year-old was staying in a hotel room with a "female friend" and is thought to have taken two 50 milligram sildenafil pills, a generic form of Viagra, and had some alcoholic drinks.</p><p>Forensic medicine specialists and a pathologist based in India described the case in the Journal of Forensic and Legal Medicine on March 3. </p><p><a href="https://www.insider.com/erectile-dysfunction-drug-gave-men-blue-vision-color-blindness-2020-2">Sildenafil</a> works by inhibiting an enzyme found in the smooth muscle of one of the penis' erectile tissues, triggering a temporary rush of blood that causes an <a href="https://www.insider.com/guides/health/sex-relationships/how-to-last-longer-in-bed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">erection</a>.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2014/20895s039s042lbl.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Food and Drug Administration approved</a> the popular blue pill for erectile dysfunction — which is when a person is unable to reach or maintain an erection until the end of sexual activity — in 1998, and it quickly became a blockbuster drug before generic forms were later made available. </p><p>The specialists said they wrote the report to raise awareness of the risks associated with using sildenafil without medical advice. According the report, the man's friends and relatives said they weren't aware that he had a prescription for the drug. <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31444051/#affiliation-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">There are reports,</a> for example from Korea, that people use the drug alongside alcohol recreationally.  </p><p>People need to know about the potential side effects of sildenafil to prevent more deaths, the case report authors said.</p><p>The usual dose of the drug for erectile dysfunction is 50mg once a day, but 25mg is recommended for first timers as well as those with liver, kidney or heart problems or those who take certain HIV medications, according to the original prescribing information for Viagra. </p><p>The morning after the man took sildenafil, he developed a <a href="https://www.insider.com/signs-a-headache-is-life-threatening-according-to-er-doctor-2022-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">headache</a> and started vomiting, the report states.</p><p>At first he declined to seek medical help, but his symptoms got worse and he was taken to hospital. Doctors declared him dead on arrival. </p><h2>The man died from a brain bleed</h2><p>An autopsy later found that the man died from a brain bleed, a type of stroke. He also had signs of heart and kidney damage from longstanding high blood pressure; a fatty liver; and high levels of alcohol in his blood, the report authors said. </p><p>According to the report, the man had an episode of high blood pressure two years before, but wasn't taking medication for it when he died. High blood pressure can increase the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/bloodpressure/about.htm#:~:text=High%20blood%20pressure%20can%20cause,movement%2C%20and%20other%20basic%20activities." target="_blank" rel="noopener">risk of strokes</a>, whether or not a person takes Viagra.</p><p>How sildenafil and alcohol interact isn't well-established, with only a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26037192/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">few reports </a>of people having a brain bleed after taking it and drinking alcohol.</p><p>In this case and others it's not possible to determine whether the brain bleed was directly related to sildenafil, mixing the drug with alcohol, or other factors such as sexual activity or the patient's underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure.</p><p><a href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2014/20895s039s042lbl.pdf">Stroke</a><a href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2014/20895s039s042lbl.pdf">s</a> were reported in less than 2% of people in clinical trials, according to Viagra's <a href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2014/20895s039s042lbl.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prescribing information</a>, and it wasn't possible to prove the drug was the cause. Most of the people who had strokes had underlying health conditions that put them at risk of stroke, like high blood pressure.</p><p>A stroke that affects the eye, called a non arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), is listed in the prescribing information as a "rare" condition. People that experience sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes should stop using Viagra and seek medical care, it states.</p><p><a href="https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2014/20895s039s042lbl.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">More common side effects</a> of sildenafil include: headache, flushing, heartburn, abnormal vision, back pain, muscle aches, rash, and dizziness. The drug can also enhance the effects of blood pressure medications, and drugs containing nitrates, which are used for chest pain.</p>

Users get access to a series of videos explaining performance anxiety, with tips on how to communicate during sex, and motivational clips aiming to disrupt the idea that penises need to be erect to have good sex. </p><p>Erectile dysfunction impacts 5% of men under 40, but that number increases to 15% once they hit 70, <a href="https://www.uwhealth.org/urology/erectile-dysfunction-ed/20537#:~:text=About%205%20percent%20of%20men,of%20men%20in%20their%2060s).">according to the University of Washington.</a> For most, the obvious answer to such a diagnosis will be a little blue pill. </p><p>However, Lover's survey, of 148 men who completed its three-week program, found 62% of them reported improvements in their erections. This comes close to the <a href="https://www.health.harvard.edu/newsletter_article/What_to_do_if_Viagra_wont_do">70% of people</a> who see results from common ED medications like Viagra, according to Harvard <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">Health</keyword>.</p><h2>Poor erection confidence is a 'self-fulling prophecy' </h2><p>According to Dr. Britney Blair, Chief Science Officer of Lover and a clinical psychologist, many times when people with penises have their first experience with erectile dysfunction, their immediate reaction is panic.</p><p>"After this first experience, they may become anxious about their next sexual encounter fearing that they will again lose or not even be able to obtain an erection," Blair said. "This then becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy which can lead to even more performance anxiety/pressure and often avoidance of any sexual encounter."</p><p>Unfortunately, confidence is not the same as determination. </p><p>"If I were to hold a gun to your head and tell you to clap your hands and stomp your feet, no problem, as that is an active process," Blair said. "You have some control. An 'erection confidence' app may be just as effective as Viagra, using motivational videos instead of a pill to treat erectile dysfunction

In comparison to the 1mg the researchers used for two vases, a Viagra pill contains 50mg.</p><p>This flower hack works because wilting and erectile dysfunction involve the same enzyme. Viagra slows the breakdown of that enzyme, allowing blood vessels - or the vascular tissue of plants - to stay open for longer.</p><p>So, if you want to keep your Valentine's Day roses fresh for an extra week, a bit of Viagra could do the trick. Viagra is going generic at half the price of the branded version

From claims of their former leader having golfed 11 holes-in-one, to developing a cure for AIDS, the Hermit Kingdom is never short of extraordinary claims.</p><p>Its latest contribution to society, however, won't be needing a healthy dose of miracles to be true. Instead, its latest pharmaceutical product - developed by the state-owned Korea Oriental Instant Medicinal Center - seems to work as it should: treating sexual dysfunction.</p><p>Called Neo-Viagra, the purported "herbal medicine" is being sold in North Korea for between $12 and $15, with <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/we-scrutinized-north-korean-viagra--and-discovered-it-might-actually-work/2016/08/10/ca181d0c-58d6-11e6-8b48-0cb344221131_story.html" target="_blank">indications</a> of it being ready for export.</p><p>After being analyzed in a lab, Pfizer, the pharmaceutical corporation that manufactures the original Viagra, found that around 50-milligrams of sildenafil, the active synthetic ingredient in Viagra, was present in the North Korean version.</p><p>A lab analysis of the two also showed stark differences. Besides looking completely different - Neo-Viagra being brown granules contained in a vial, whereas Pfizer's version is a signature blue pill - Pfizer sells Viagra with 25, 50, and 100-milligrams of sildenafil.</p><p>But the differences don't end there. Not only is Neo-Viagra claimed to treat both female and male patients, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/we-scrutinized-north-korean-viagra--and-discovered-it-might-actually-work/2016/08/10/ca181d0c-58d6-11e6-8b48-0cb344221131_story.html" target="_blank">according</a> to The Washington Post, the packaging also claims to relieve back, shoulder and knee pain, ease paralysis, and alleviate "kidney malfunction, sciatic neuralgia, high blood pressure and brain artery hardening."</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.cvs.com/viagra/?DCSext.SourceSiteVGA=viagra">Viagra.com</a></span></p><p class="caption">Can you spot the fake Viagra pill? In <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/northkorea/10766587/North-Korea-branches-out-into-ivory-fake-cigarette-and-pharmaceutical-trade.html" target="_blank">addition</a> to manufacturing fake Viagra pills in the past, they've also been accused of producing counterfeit $100 "<a href="https://news.vice.com/article/north-koreas-counterfeit-benjamins-have-vanished" target="_blank">supernotes</a>" and Marlboro cigarettes.</p><p>The isolated state has also been discovered to have a drug problem of a different sort. <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/02/07/kim-jong-un-breaking-bad-the-secret-world-of-north-korean-meth.html" target="_blank">Reports</a> have sprouted with the notion that North Korea may be undergoing a major methamphetamine-abuse problem. <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/02/07/kim-jong-un-breaking-bad-the-secret-world-of-north-korean-meth.html" target="_blank">Once</a> a hub of opium production, after floods and natural disasters ruined their poppy farms, the state took to a different approach to producing a cheap and fast way of generating revenue in the black market.</p><p>It's unclear whether or not this ambitious cure will ever make its way to consumers in the west, however, the product has already been <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/we-scrutinized-north-korean-viagra--and-discovered-it-might-actually-work/2016/08/10/ca181d0c-58d6-11e6-8b48-0cb344221131_story.html" target="_blank">found</a> being sold in parts of China. As of now, North Korea may have to face legal ramifications - after The Post sent their sample of Neo-Viagra to Pfizer analysts, the pharmaceutical company stated that they were reviewing the possibility of patent or copyright infringements from North Korea.</p><p>All in all, illicit activities provide a major boost to the Hermit Kingdom's sidelined economy. North Korea has developed its own Viagra -&#160;and it might actually work

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Pharmaceutical giant <keyword id="44612" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Pfizer">Pfizer</keyword> announced Monday that it will become the first in the industry to peddle its infamous little blue pills directly from its website.</span></span></p>
<p>The company's new e-commerce site, called <a href="https://www.cvs.com/viagra/?DCSext.SourceSiteVGA=viagra" target="_blank">Viagra Home Delivery</a>, gives prescription holders a way to bypass the usual middlemen to buy and refill their prescriptions, with the added bonus of knowing that they're ordering the real deal.</p>
<p>It's a wonder it's taken the company this long to launch this kind of service.</p>
<p>Viagra is one of <a href="http://www.nabp.net/programs/consumer-protection/buying-medicine-online/counterfeit-drugs" target="_blank">the most counterfeited drugs</a> in the world, and Pfizer has poured billions of dollars into anti-counterfeiting measures around the globe. <span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">In 2011, Pfizer's Global Security arm found that out of 22 websites appearing in the top search results for the phrase “buy Viagra," 80% of the pills were counterfeit.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><span>“We have seen counterfeit medicines manufactured in filthy and deplorable conditions, yet some people do not realize the risks that this poses to their health and </span></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">safety, our top priority,” said Matthew Bassiur, vice president, Global Security.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"></span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><strong>What it costs:</strong> A single dose of Viagra (one pill) goes for a steep $25, though Pfizer is offering three free pills for first-time orders and free delivery for everyone. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Cost is the main reason counterfeit <keyword id="14721" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Drugs">drugs</keyword> have seen such a boom, as customers are drawn to advertisements for $1 to $3 "generic" Viagra pills. </span></p>
<p><span>The reality is that there is no generic version of the pill on the market yet. What customers get instead is usually a pretty convincing fake. </span></p>

Shy Guys Can Now Buy Viagra Directly From Its Website

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In 2022, billionaire Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban set up a no-frills, low-cost online pharmacy.</li><li>Since then, Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Company has amassed more than 2,000 offerings, mostly generics.</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/mark-cuban">Mark Cuban</a> is on a mission to upend Big Pharma.</p><p>In early 2022, Cuban founded <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walgreens-mark-cuban-cvs-prescription-drugs-prices-cost-plus-model-2024-1">Cost Plus Drugs</a>, a discount pill-mailing service that promised to take some of the bloat out of America's pharmaceutical system by delivering drugs to consumers at lower, more transparent price points.</p><p>Here's how it works: Cost Plus Drugs, as the name implies, gets drugs directly from manufacturers, cutting out the pharmaceutical middlemen and their extra costs. You pay a 15% markup to Cost Plus Drugs, plus a fixed $5 for labor on each medication and $5 for shipping.</p><div type="image" title="three workers in a pharmacy setting" height="4000" width="6000" msid="112197854" hostid="261" sizebytes="504712"></div><h2 id="3e039770-7726-4e4b-88ba-a535ea447cba">Typically, drug pricing is clear as mud</h2><p>Take <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/untold-story-of-viagra-doctor-dropped-pants-at-urology-conference-2020-2">Viagra</a>, for example. How much will a name-brand, 30-day supply of the biggest dose of the "little blue pill" (100mg) cost you? Great question. It could be anywhere from around $2,000 to upwards of $3,000, without insurance. A generic form of the same 30-day supply might start somewhere around $250, but can also exceed $1,000.</p><p>Cost Plus tells consumers that it pays the manufacturer $3 for that same 30-day supply of 100mg generic Viagra tablets. It slaps on a 15% ($0.60) markup, plus $5 for "pharmacy labor" and voila: a 30-day supply of sildenafil citrate for $8.60 (plus shipping and taxes).</p><p>The company has over 2,000 drugs on offer this way, mainly generics. It's everything from unbranded Crestor (about $6-7 a month, plus shipping) to silver burn cream for wounds (approximately $10-11 per tube). You can replace a trip to the pharmacy with a few minutes of computer time: create an online account, then connect with your doctor who'll place your prescription order electronically.</p><p>Cuban, the veteran <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mark-cuban-says-leaving-shark-tank-after-season-16-2023-11">Shark Tank investor</a> and billionaire part-owner of the Dallas Mavericks, isn't necessarily expecting his mail-order pharmacy to make him millions of dollars richer. Rather, his goal with Cost Plus, he <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://youtu.be/apTsCDNgXF4?si=3LeTw5angPJlNgTZ&amp;t=63">says</a>, is to change the "game" of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-education-healthcare-childcare-got-so-expensive-feeling-it-now-2023-4">drug pricing</a>.</p><p>"We are completely transparent, with the same price for anyone and everyone," Cuban told Business Insider via email. "We believe that when all data is transparent, then the market becomes efficient. At that point, prices will drop significantly."</p><h2 id="8c89cb9b-aec1-4e9f-a7e1-c4bec00f2500">Importing $15 penicillin to compete with $500 shots from Pfizer is just the beginning</h2><div type="image" title="pills" height="1414" width="2119" msid="112197849" hostid="261" sizebytes="192698"></div><p>Cost Plus has been bullish about its ultimate ambitions to end the secretive, uneven world of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/big-pharma-companies-taxes-american-billion-dollar-profits-drugs-healthcare-2023-8">US drug pricing</a> altogether. And it's increasingly stepping out of the generic world and going after big, brand-name drugmakers like Pfizer and Novo Nordisk.</p><p>Earlier this year, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.costplusdrugs.com/mission/">the company</a> started up a manufacturing plant in Texas aimed at alleviating drug shortages, and this summer it inked an import deal with a Portuguese pharmaceutical brand to<a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/costplusdrugs/status/1813620177852060145"> bring</a> cheaper penicillin shots to clinicians in the US, who've been dealing with a surging nationwide <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gonorrhea-syphilis-cases-out-of-control-in-us-std-expert-2022-9">syphilis</a> outbreak that has completely cleaned out the US supply.</p><p>Normally, Pfizer is the only American manufacturer of the specific shot in question, called Bicillin L-A, but they've been in short supply on that medication for over a year. For now, the US Food and Drug Administration is allowing Cost Plus to import Portuguese penicillin to the US [$15], but only until Pfizer's [~$500+] supply comes back out of shortage, likely in early 2025.</p><p>"We are going to try to do the same thing for any med that is in shortage where we feel we can save patients a material amount of money," Cuban said. And he didn't outright dismiss my idea that the same could be done in the future for chemotherapy medications, or GLP-1 weight loss shots like Wegovy, which have both been in severe shortages for many months.</p><p>"Where we can find a high-quality source that meets all regulatory requirements, we will do our best to import them," he said.</p><h2 id="3f43f5a0-16b8-41cb-92c1-88cc4f3e7937">1 regulatory change that would bring down healthcare costs across the board</h2><p>Over the next decade, he expects Cost Plus to add more branded medications, and also move into "high-end specialty therapeutics."</p><p>But he also acknowledged his strategy can only go so far, without firmer regulations, aimed at showing consumers what drugs actually cost to produce. If he had his way, Cuban says that every healthcare provider, pharmacy middleman, or "any affiliated in any way company" would be required to "publish their un-redacted contracts, for all to see."</p><p>"Prices could drop 30% across all of healthcare in a year," he said. "Transparency would end all the payment games."</p>

We asked Mark Cuban how he's going to disrupt Big Pharma. He said it's pretty straightforward, actually.

<p>Kade was 21 years old when he started injecting testosterone. On the surface, he looked like the picture of health, but he didn't feel like it. He felt unmotivated and anxious, so anxious he couldn't drive.</p><p>"I had very low energy. I had very low motivation. I struggled to get out of the bed in the morning," Kade, who lives between Idaho and Florida, told me over the phone.</p><p>Things changed when his primary-care doctor ran extensive blood work and found just one red flag. He had low testosterone levels, in the range of 219 to 239 nanograms per deciliter. Doctors disagree on the "typical" range, but generally say men in their 20s have around 400 to 600. For Kade, this was a glimmer of hope: finally, something he could try to fix.</p><p>Four years later, you can find Kade on TikTok, telling 74,000 followers he transformed his well-being — and body composition — with a regimen of twice weekly testosterone injections. At 25, he feels like a new man, he said. He's healthy, muscular, lean, full-bearded, and horny. He said his sex drive is "uncaged."</p><p>"If you wake up in the morning and your soldier is not standing at full salute or your tent is not fully pitched, you have low testosterone," Kade, who doesn't use his last name publicly, said in one video, punctuating his sentences with the occasional swing of a syringe. People comment on his page asking for more information about his doses. He tells them to check out LaSara Medical Group, a virtual clinic for men's sexual health. (LaSara confirmed Kade gets free treatments in exchange for referrals.)</p><p>Kade's story is not unique. He represents a growing swath of young men turning to testosterone-replacement therapy (also known as TRT or simply T) to, in their view, optimize their bodies.</p><div type="image" title="Alexis Ohanian" height="2451" width="1634" msid="114620305" hostid="261" sizebytes="219338"></div><p>Once taboo — a private matter for an older guy with erectile dysfunction or a hormonal deficiency — it has now become a point of pride for men to proactively track their testosterone levels and confront dips.</p><p>Take Alexis Ohanian, the 41-year-old Reddit cofounder and Serena Williams' husband, who <a target="_blank" href="https://x.com/alexisohanian/status/1813220215263490418">recently posted on X about his (relatively high) testosterone levels</a>. He credited weightlifting, cutting down on meat and alcohol, and taking testosterone-support supplements from the healthcare company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alexis-ohanian-on-investing-in-healthcare-startup-ro-2020-7">Ro</a>, in which he is an investor. In 2018, Joe Rogan told <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEce1DRsRwQ&amp;ab_channel=JREClips">podcast listeners he started TRT</a> when he turned 40 to make his body "work way better." In 2021, the actor Dax Shepard, then 46, <a target="_blank" href="https://armchairexpertpod.com/pods/mila-kunis-ashton-kutcher">said</a> on his podcast that he had gained 24 pounds of muscle thanks, in part, to "heavy testosterone injections."</p><p>While primary-care doctors may recommend diet tweaks and better sleep to naturally boost testosterone levels, a booming industry of men's clinics offers more potent alternatives.</p><p>Prescriptions for testosterone-replacement therapy have dramatically increased across the US over the last two decades, rising 20% from 2016 to 2019. More recent data, while limited due to inconsistent monitoring, suggests the rate is steadily climbing. Only a tiny fraction of that can be attributed to trans healthcare; 0.3% of the US population is trans, according to the CDC.</p><p>This trend tells a story of a new kind of gender-affirming care, but for cisgender men. Testosterone is prescribed to treat a set of vague symptoms for men hoping to feel "better," though it's not exactly clear what it does or who needs it. In his 2007 analysis of the testosterone market, the legendary medical sociologist Peter Conrad said: "Testosterone became a drug in search of a disease to treat." Nearly two decades later, the search continues, with male insecurity as a stand-in condition.</p><h2 id="81b47440-5d40-4eab-8b35-778b613a6cde"><strong>The house that Viagra built</strong></h2><p>Our fascination with testosterone dates back to over a century ago, when endocrinologists found that testosterone is associated with male aging. In 1889, Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard, an eccentric French physiologist, injected himself with testicular blood and seminal fluids from dogs and guinea pigs, saying the experiment rejuvenated his energy and libido at 72.</p><p>While we now know that is impossible based on how testicles store hormones — at best, it was a placebo effect — the concept kick-started a new era of hormone research. What followed was a century of patchy research, with some groundbreaking discoveries that shaped the modern era of trans care but not enough clarity to warrant widespread testosterone prescriptions for cisgender men.</p><div type="image" title="Charles-Édouard Brown-Séquard" height="653" width="1000" msid="114620303" hostid="261" sizebytes="74428"></div><p>But the story of today's testosterone clinics begins in 2017, with Viagra coming off patent.</p><p>Viagra, a vasodilator that can help men achieve an erection, created an industry to medically treat masculinity in a way never seen before. When<strong> </strong>the generic form <a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/brucelee/2017/12/06/viagra-get-ready-for-it-to-becomes-generic-cheaper-and-more-available/">entered the market</a>, the little blue pill dropped in cost from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8272595/#:~:text=Over%20the%20last%20decade%2C%20sildenafil,pill%20for%20a%20generic%20version.">$88.45 a pill to $1 to $4</a> apiece. Direct-to-consumer telehealth companies — including the startups <a target="_blank" href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/erectile-dysfunction-hims-roman-thinx-subway-ads/">Hims</a> and Ro — popped up, offering consultations and treatments for conditions that were historically taboo to talk about, such as erectile dysfunction and hair loss.</p><p>Popularly known as the hormone responsible for making a man "manly," testosterone was the natural next step in this growing healthcare market. Now, you can go to a clinic to fix more than just the strength of your erections and the hair on your head. Testosterone therapy promises to make you more muscular, hornier, and more driven. By conventional definitions, it promises to make you more of a man.</p><p>Between 2017 and 2019, some of the leading DTC men's websites saw a 1688% increase in unique visits, averaging 5 million visits a month, a study published in Sexual Medicine found. DTC health companies and telehealth have <a target="_blank" href="https://doi.org/10.1007/s11930-022-00332-z">continued to expand since their explosion during the pandemic</a>, and these figures are even larger today. "This business model practically built itself," Dr. Justin Houman, a urologist and assistant professor at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, wrote in a recent <a target="_blank" href="https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2F10.0.82.45%2Ftau.2019.08.33&amp;data=05%7C02%7CAndrea.Becker%40Hunter.cuny.edu%7C14c079dd6d3f43cd6e0c08dced2669a0%7C6f60f0b35f064e099715989dba8cc7d8%7C0%7C0%7C638645996446620828%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=cXW556nmD5VyU5BES5E6R9m2HSW2X6VrtGo6mH4bsiQ%3D&amp;reserved=0">analysis of the men's health clinic</a> industry.</p><div type="image" title="New York City subway ads for Ro's generic version of Viagra" height="3887" width="5831" msid="114620312" hostid="261" sizebytes="2558710"></div><p>When LaSara's cofounder John Snedegar opened up his brick-and-mortar men's health clinic in 2017, "nobody" was specializing in men's sexual health, he said. A urologist might check your testosterone levels if you were over the age of 40 and struggling with sex or fertility. Seven years later, his clinic is a tiny fish in an ocean of thousands of competitors offering specialized testosterone therapies to healthy men of all ages.</p><p>"It used to be considered an old men's treatment," Snedegar, an entrepreneur and former yoga instructor, said. "Now we have patients in their 20s and their 30s and their 40s with low testosterone seeking treatment."</p><p>Here's how it typically works: You sign up on a clinic's website, answer questions about your energy, happiness, erections, and sex drive, and maybe do a phone consultation. Some clinics, such as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.maximustribe.com/">Maximus</a>, a telehealth company, ship an at-home testing kit to you to assess your testosterone levels. In-house doctors review and approve your test results; the website assures prospective customers: "No need to sweat it. Most men are approved for treatment." Other clinics, such as LaSara, require blood work to be done in an affiliated lab first.</p><p>Given that testosterone treatment is typically presented to patients as a lifelong endeavor (it can affect your natural production of testosterone, and attempting to stop TRT can have <a target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26742589/">"withdrawal" effects</a> such as weight gain), men's health clinics typically offer all-inclusive membership models. You pay a couple of hundred dollars a month, and that covers your lab work and injection therapy. At LaSara, patients pay $170 a month for shots, consultations, and lab work. <a target="_blank" href="https://lowtcenter.com/self-testosterone-injections/">Low T Center, headquartered in Texas</a>, offers prescriptions for $105 a month, after you pay $160 for two lab exams. Some clinics offer discounts if you sign up for six months or a year at a time.</p><p>Gameday Men's Health, quickly becoming a main player in the space, does not offer telehealth, and regular lab work is required and performed on-site. In lieu of the convenience of telehealth, it offers "a man-cave environment," Evan Miller, Gameday's founder and CEO, said.</p><div type="image" title="Gameday Men's Health" height="3363" width="5040" msid="114620301" hostid="261" sizebytes="3647946"></div><p>"Guys are hanging out in the lobby, watching ESPN, eating fruit snacks," he said. "Every guy who walks in the door, we just make him feel like a brother, help him feel the best he can under medical guidelines."</p><h2 id="72b1a0c9-f5fe-4265-9767-a1b30c4f6951"><strong>Does it work?</strong></h2><p>Testosterone deficiency requiring medical intervention is not common, nor is it an inevitability awaiting all men as they hit middle or even old age.</p><p>Research has found about 20% of young men are considered low in testosterone or hypogonadal, a condition in which the body's sex glands produce little to no hormones. However, there's disagreement about what's considered a normal range, and<strong> </strong>attempts at establishing clinical definitions for low testosterone and andropause ("male menopause") have stalled. Testosterone levels also fluctuate throughout a man's life, even within a given day.</p><p>As is common in medicine, the symptoms that might warrant a prescription are vague and ubiquitous. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3255409/#ref12">Telltale signs of low testosterone</a> are reduced libido, fatigue, osteoporosis and fractures, and erectile dysfunction — things that are<em> </em>relatively prevalent among men to varying degrees and for different reasons. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7520594/#b4-enm-2020-760">Obesity and type 2 diabetes</a> are associated with low testosterone, though it's unclear whether a testosterone dip influences these conditions or <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7520594/#b5-enm-2020-760">the other way around</a>.</p>          <p>A couple of years ago, Derek, a 38-year-old glazier from Southern California, was reading Men's Health magazine when he came across an article about testosterone-replacement therapy. "A lot of the symptoms that were described in there were fitting my situation," Derek, who asked to withhold his last name for privacy, told me. These were symptoms such as "a massive, massive amount of fatigue," erectile dysfunction, poor sleep quality, excess body fat, and inability to put on muscle despite diet and exercise changes, he said.</p><p>Derek searched for clinics online and arrived at Gameday Men's Health. A year and a half of weekly injections later, he can't contain his excitement. "I love testosterone. I would never stop taking testosterone, ever," he told me on the phone. These days, he said, he has enough energy to work two jobs seven days a week.</p><p>Dana, 45, a roofer and grip on movie sets in California, said he used to roll his eyes at "cheesy" commercials for "T-boosting" products that promised "you'll have so much energy and you'll perform better in the bedroom." But things changed in his 40s. He said that after "hitting a plateau in the gym," he decided to try out TRT, telling himself he could always stop if he didn't like it. Within four weeks, he noticed increased energy levels, and his wife noticed a spike in his libido. A year later, he's sold on the importance of maintaining your T levels. "The energy, the libido, and the physical gains in the gym are, like, the three top sellers for me," Dana, who also asked to withhold his last name for privacy, told me. "I don't know why it's not more talked about."</p><p>Will TRT work for every man like it has for Kade, Derek, and Dana?</p> <p>There is no denying that low testosterone has genuine health impacts. "When you're having lower testosterone levels, your vitality for life, your vigor for life, your vigor for sex, for exercise, for everything is just poor," Houman said. But he typically recommends lifestyle changes, like more exercise, eating better, and getting good sleep, which all naturally help to boost testosterone levels.</p><p>Prescribing TRT to healthy young men is a controversial practice within mainstream medicine.<strong> </strong>Studies have found the benefits <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/28/well/testosterone-therapy-is-popular-but-studies-are-mixed.html">to be mixed</a>. Most <a target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29562341/">trials</a> are too small to glean anything from or feature only older men, leaving unanswered questions about how TRT affects men below 35.<strong> </strong>There <em>is</em> solid evidence that hypogonadal men treated with TRT may experience increased <a target="_blank" href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/cob.12022#cob12022-bib-0004">muscle mass and reduced fat mass</a> — at least for a few weeks. <a target="_blank" href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37589949/">One of the few long-term studies</a> found middle-aged and older men who took TRT to boost testosterone and libido had more energy, better sex, and more sexual desire for two years.</p><p>Plus, the downsides are real: hair loss, acne, and a possible <a target="_blank" href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/sexual-health/in-depth/testosterone-therapy/art-20045728">worsening of sleep apnea</a>. Infertility, too: Urologists across the country told me that they had fielded a surprising number of puzzled young patients who weren't aware that boosting testosterone also decreases sperm production.</p><p>"I was seeing more and more young men come to the office on TRT," Dr. Justin Dubin, a urologist in Miami, said. "They were coming for fertility care. And basically, I was like, 'Well, are you on TRT?' And they're like, 'Yeah.' I was like, 'Well, that kills your sperm.'"</p><p>Dubin was curious about this, so he did a secret-shopper study on direct-to-consumer companies, <a target="_blank" href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2799297">published in JAMA</a> in 2022. Posing as a 34-year-old patient with above-average testosterone levels, he contacted these clinics and said he was interested in preserving his fertility. Six of the seven companies offered him testosterone despite the contraindication. "It was a pretty awakening study for me," he said.</p><h2 id="76a3d450-e3bb-4fa0-acc1-7f34f12d3132"><strong>A new kind of gender-affirming care</strong></h2><p>Men's health clinics are, in general, operating in a gray area of medicine. This is not your primary-care doctor taking a holistic perspective of your health needs. This is a business selling a supplement — a boost to add to your routine to feel more like the cultural ideal of a man.</p>          <p>Crucially, these clinics do not cater to trans men. Clinic directors proudly shared with me the diversity of their patients — from bricklayers to CEOs. When I asked about transgender care, they demurred. That's something else, they said. Too complicated, too specific. Snedegar told me his clinic took only "biological men."</p><p>Some social scientists have expressed concern about the implications this trend has for broader cultural understandings of masculinity. Gwen Berumen, a sociologist at the University of Texas at Austin, has analyzed the emergence of testosterone discourse on TikTok and found clinics and influencers to be hyperfocused on the idea of "optimizing" your body to achieve an elusive masculine state. "Anything that's about self-optimization is trying to reach this ideal that you're never actually going to get to," Berumen said.</p><p>In 2019, the American Psychological Association issued its first-ever <a target="_blank" href="https://www.apa.org/monitor/2019/01/ce-corner">warning</a> about the perils of masculinity. The organization said the strict standards of what it means to be a man today were making boys and men feel isolated, weak, and unable to express themselves.<strong> </strong>Researchers such as Berumen worry the branding of men's health clinics prop up impossible standards of manhood. The implication is that the only thing between you and unbridled manly perfection is a will and a syringe.</p><p>Medicalized masculinity has higher stakes, Berumen said. Gender-affirming care is becoming more accessible, but only for one kind of man: Testosterone clinics for cisgender men are proliferating amid a wave of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/graphics/USA-HEALTHCARE/TRANS-BILLS/zgvorreyapd/">anti-trans legislation</a> that limits access for transgender Americans. While testosterone therapy for cisgender men may or may not be beneficial in the long term, there's strong evidence that testosterone treatment is associated with <a target="_blank" href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(16)00036-X/abstract">improved mental and physical health</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.jahonline.org/article/S1054-139X(21)00568-1/fulltext">lower levels of suicidality</a> for trans men.</p><p>There are some upsides to the expansion of DTC men's health. Dubin, the Miami urologist, has his doubts about this industry but said inspiring men to care about their health is a good thing. Men have long underused the healthcare system and historically engage in less "healthy" behaviors than women, like eating well and seeing a doctor regularly. "It's more approachable for many men to talk about their health problems this way, especially men's health problems, which have a stigma around them," Dubin said.</p><p>These clinics are also helping men forge networks of support.</p><p>"Every day I wake up, I read my DMs, I read my comments, and I go film again," Kade told me. "I am on fire to help other men create a great community of people that are bettering themselves."</p>

Young men are getting testosterone boosts to feel stronger, sharper, and anxiety-free

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Sexual stereotypes often lead people to question whether their sexual experiences are normal or not.</li><li>Myths that suggest <keyword id="78622" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="penis">penis</keyword> size matters for sexual pleasure, blue balls can cause long-term problems, and men have to ejaculate to experience pleasure abound, but they're scientifically inaccurate.</li></ul><p>When it comes to <keyword id="6355231" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Sex">sex</keyword> and sexual experiences, no two are the same.</p><p>But stereotypes may cause you to believe blanket statements about sexual <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> and what's "normal."</p><p>People with penises, for example, may think their penis size affects how good they are in the bedroom, or that <keyword id="53248" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="premature-ejaculation">premature ejaculation</keyword> is incurable, when neither is true.</p><p>To debunk pervasive penis and <keyword id="39897" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Orgasm">orgasm</keyword> myths, Insider spoke with sexual health experts.</p><h2>Myth: Penis size affects sexual satisfaction</h2><p>The idea that a bigger penis is always better one has long-existed, but Brahmbatt told Insider the length and girth of a person's member isn't a direct reflection of how sexually satisfied they or their partner will be.</p><p>"Most guys are fine in terms of size and girth. But when they size themselves up against the adult film industry they may start having insecurities," <a href="https://www.jaminbrahmbhatt.com/">Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt</a>, a urologist in Orlando, Florida, told Insider.</p><p>When a patient tells Brahmbatt penis size is a concern for them, he reminds them the <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8709382/">average penis</a> is 3.5 inches long when flaccid and 5.1 inches when erect.</p><p>He also said a normally healthy person, whether they fall above or below the average, shouldn't experience lack of sexual satisfaction due to size alone. </p><h2>Myth: You can use supplements to lower your post-sex refractory period</h2><p>With a simple Google search, you'll find there's a huge market for pills that promise to lower your <a href="https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/refractory-period#reduction">refractory period</a>, or the time it takes after ejaculating to get an erection again.</p><p>But there's no scientific evidence to show these supplements, which lower levels of the hormone prolactin, work.</p><p>The pills are marketed under the supposition that high prolactin levels in men make their refractory periods longer, so reducing levels of prolactin can reduce that period when they're unable to get it up.</p><p>But recent <a href="https://phys.org/news/2021-01-men.html">research</a> on mice, who have similar sexual behaviors to humans, found prolactin isn't to blame to refractory periods.</p><p>Researchers from Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown in Portugal found no difference in mice who were given prolactin after sex and mice who weren't given any prolaction after sex.</p><p>"If prolactin was indeed necessary for the refectory period, males without prolactin should have regained sexual activity after ejaculation faster than controls," Susana Valente, one of the study authors, <a href="https://phys.org/news/2021-01-men.html">told Phys.org</a>. "But they did not."</p><p>Urologists have also warned against using supplements to reduce your refractory period.</p><p>"There is no hard science backing up the proposed claims. Plus, supplements are not FDA-regulated so what you think you are taking, may not be what you are taking," <a href="https://www.jaminbrahmbhatt.com/">Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt</a>, a urologist at Orlando Health and assistant professor at UCF College of Medicine, told <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/sex-women/a19524569/refractory-period/">Men's Health</a>.</p><h2>Myth: 'Blue balls' can be deadly</h2><p>It's certainly scary to see your testicles turn blue and to feel pain and discomfort in your penis.</p><p>But those sensations, which are often indicative of the condition <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/sex-women/a19534594/science-blue-balls/">epididymal hypertension</a>, or "blue balls," aren't life-threatening or a risk for permanent damage.</p><p>Epididymal hypertension occurs when a person has "excess blood remaining in the testicles from a wave of erections not followed by ejaculation," according to Brahmbatt.</p><p>Normally, when a man gets aroused, blood flows to the penis and testicles, and causes an erection. If the man ejaculates, the blood returns to a normal level. But if he doesn't, blue balls can occur instead.</p><p>Brahmbatt said there's no "cure" for blue balls. </p><p>"Anecdotally, the quickest way to recovery appears to be ejaculation. Other ways discussed in forums include ice packs, avoiding erections, [and] exercise of some sort," he said.</p><p>In some cases, symptoms of a more serious problem could be confused with blue balls, so its important to see a doctor if it doesn't go away, Brahmbatt said.</p><h2>Myth: Men never fake orgasms</h2><p>When men reach climax, the tell-tale sign is ejaculation.</p><p>But Brahmbatt said that doesn't exempt men from faking orgasms.</p><p>"Men can fake the sights and sounds of an orgasm. The only problem is there may be not visible ejaculate. They could, at that time, just blame it on a medication or medical problem," Brahmbatt said.</p><h2>Myth: Men can't have more than one orgasm at a time</h2><p>Some women can have consecutive orgasms during sex without any downtime. But since the majority of men ejaculate during climax, they're less likely to experience more than one orgasm in a single sex session.</p><p>But that doesn't mean it's impossible, according to Kinsey Institute sex researcher Justin Lehmiller.</p><p>The reason men typically only have one orgasm is the refractory period, or time it takes after ejaculating for the penis to become erect again.</p><p>"The length of this period is highly variable across men, but could be just a few minutes in a younger guy compared to hours (or maybe even days) in older guys," Lehmiller <a href="https://www.lehmiller.com/blog/2014/3/10/can-men-have-multiple-orgasms-too">wrote on his website</a> where he shares his research findings.</p><p>But some men can orgasm without ejaculating, so for them, it's possible to have more than one orgasm in a row since the refractory period is taken out of the equation.</p><p>In fact, a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/2818169/">1989 study</a> looked at 21 men who were able to have consecutive orgasms without a refractory period.</p><h2>Myth: Premature ejaculation is incurable</h2><p><a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/premature-ejaculation/symptoms-causes/syc-20354900#:~:text=Premature%20ejaculation%20occurs%20when%20a,this%20problem%20at%20some%20time.">Premature ejaculation</a>, or ejaculating before you or your partner would like during sex, is a common problem among men.</p><p>As Insider previously reported, <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-cure-premature-ejaculation-cant-last-in-bed-2019-9">1 in 3 men have experienced premature ejaculation</a> at some point in their lives. But it can be fixed with the help of topicals, condoms, and medications.</p><p>According to Dr. Seth Cohen, a urologist at NYU Langone Health, penis sprays and condoms from <a href="https://www.promescent.com/faq">Promescent</a> and <a href="https://www.getroman.com/premature-ejaculation/">Roman</a> contain ingredients that temporarily desensitize the penis to prevent early onset ejaculation.</p><p>Cohen said SSRIs like Prozac, which are commonly used to treat depression, may be used off-label to delay ejaculation. One assistant told the Times that she "had to keep a supply of the shots at her desk, dispense them to him in brown paper bags and sometimes deliver the medication to hotels and elsewhere before his meetings with women." </p><p>Here's what the injections are, and some of the legitimate ways they're used.</p><h2>A penile injection instead of pills for erectile disfunction </h2><p>"Little blue pills" like Viagra don't cause arousal, they simply increase blood flow to the penis, making it easier to get and keep an erection.</p><p>Since the pills rely on good blood circulation, they do best with undamaged nerves. Patients who've had surgeries or prostatectomies can have trouble getting the drugs to work. The <a href="https://www.aarp.org/home-family/sex-intimacy/info-12-2013/sex-erection-viagra-castleman.html">AARP says</a> drugs like Cialis and Viagra are typically around 50-60% effective, but success rates can be lower for men with chronic health problems like diabetes or high blood pressure. </p><p>Weinstein reportedly used a penile injection called Caverject, which has a better success rate than Viagra. <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/3900760.pdf?origin=publication_detail">Studies suggest</a> injections work, and quickly, for about 70-80% of the men who use the ultra-fine needle treatment. </p><p>Since every body is a little different, the <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/erectile-dysfunction/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20355782">Mayo Clinic</a> says the injections are dosed on a case by case basis, ideally, "to create an erection lasting no longer than an hour." Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center <a href="https://www.mskcc.org/cancer-care/patient-education/penile-injection-therapy">says</a> the injections are generally administered "about 5 to 15 minutes before you want an erection."  </p><h2>Risks and alternatives</h2><p>The medicine has to be injected into a very specific spot to avoid hitting a nerve or a blood vessel. Typically, a very fine needle is used to administer to dose to the middle third of the penis, or sometimes on the base.</p><p>The treatment can cause bruising if the needle is accidentally injected into a vein, and injections should never be used in tandem with erectile disfunction pills. Priapism (prolonged erection) is a possible side effect, as is mild bleeding. Some doctors have suggested that nasal decongestant (like Sudafed) can help if an erection lasts too long.</p><p>There are numerous other ways to treat ED, including testosterone injections, vacuum penis pumps, and surgical rods implanted in the penis. </p><p>Studies have also shown that <a href="http://bjsm.bmj.com/content/51/19/1419">exercise</a> (particularly <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/best-exercise-for-brain-mental-health-2017-10">aerobic workouts</a>) can improve erectile problems. Harvey Weinstein reportedly injected erectile dysfunction drugs into his penis - here's what that is

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>AP</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>If you've ever come across an ad claiming that it can sell you a "generic" version of the little blue pill, you've probably dismissed it as bogus.</p><p>But scam ads for Viagra, which is prescribed for erectile dysfunction, aren't the only thing that you should steer clear of. Any company that claims it can sell you a cheaper, generic version of Viagra is lying, a recent post in the <a href="http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/07/25/is-generic-viagra-legitimate/?_r=0">New York Times' Well blog points out</a>.</p><p>Why? Because a true generic version of the drug hasn't been made available yet. The <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2013-12-17/teva-to-sell-generic-viagra-in-2017-in-pfizer-settlement">earliest you can likely expect one</a> is 2017.</p><p>That means that for now, "any pharmacy that's offering generic Viagra is probably using counterfeit product that's not approved," Carmen Catizone, the executive director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, a professional organization unaffiliated with drug makers, <a href="http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2016/07/25/is-generic-viagra-legitimate/?_r=0">told the Times</a>.</p><p>It's important to keep in mind, though, that true generic versions of drugs save lives.</p><p>In general, generics are a wonderful thing - they're a lower-cost alternative to expensive, brand-name versions of drugs. In 2010 alone, generics <a href="http://www.fda.gov/drugs/resourcesforyou/consumers/buyingusingmedicinesafely/understandinggenericdrugs/ucm167991.htm">saved the US healthcare system roughly $158 billion</a>, or about $3 billion each week, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. These drugs aren't <a href="http://content.healthaffairs.org/content/30/7/1351.full">just saving money</a>: Without them, millions of people around the globe would not be able to afford the medications that they need to survive life-threatening conditions like diabetes.</p><p>In the US, generics can exist for several reasons. First, companies that produce generics don't have to pay for advertising; they're also not forced to repeat expensive clinical trials of new drugs. Plus, a handful of companies will <a href="http://www.fda.gov/drugs/resourcesforyou/consumers/buyingusingmedicinesafely/understandinggenericdrugs/ucm167991.htm">typically all get approved to make a generic at once</a>, which ideally creates competition in the marketplace and can sometimes result in even lower prices for those drugs.</p><p>The reason there's no generic Viagra yet is because Pfizer, the company that makes it, <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/investor/2013/12/20/pfizers-expiring-viagra-patent-adversely-affects-other-drugmakers-too/#3538db8a7f3f">holds two patents for the drug</a>: the first for Viagra's composition (which expired in 2012), and the second for what's called a "method of treatment," (i.e. how the drug is used). That one doesn't expire until 2020. But the story doesn't end there.</p><p>The drug company Teva Pharmaceuticals USA plans to sell a generic version of Viagra in the US in 2017. How?
