According to police, the teenager was drunk at the time. The JJB granted bail to the teenager hours after the incident. It also asked him to write a 300-word essay on road accidents, an order that drew an onslaught of criticism. WCD commissioner Prashant Narnavare said the JJB comprises a member from the judiciary and two persons appointed by the state government. 'We have formed a committee to probe the overall conduct of the JJB members appointed by the state government, to check whether norms were followed while issuing orders in the car accident case," he said. "I have powers under the Juvenile Justice Act to probe the overall conduct of the members who have been appointed by the state government. The Special Public Prosecutor (SPP), Shishir Hiray, on Thursday, argued before Additional Sessions Judge UM Mudholkar that the accused, including the parents of the juvenile involved in the accident, medical professionals, and middlemen, acted in connivance to sabotage evidence. Hiray also dismissed claims of a media trial leading to the arrests, asserting that the investigation is being conducted with the utmost professionalism. The SPP also informed the court that the car's speed was recorded at 110 km per hour after the airbags in the car opened once it hit the two-wheeler, indicating the vehicle was likely being driven at an even higher speed before the impact. Pune Porsche car case accused 'played with judiciary' by tampering evidence, says prosecution

A senior official of Pune Police on Wednesday said that the crime branch unit will use artificial intelligence for 'digital reconstruction' of the incident. The official said that a cyber expert will design the reconstruction of the crime scene digitally using AI-based software, and all the inputs of the crime scenario will be put into the software to create the digital crime scene. "The movement of vehicles, the number of people present on the road, the speed of the Porsche, and other factors will be taken into consideration for the reconstruction of the crime scene. As the accused is a minor, he cannot be taken to the spot. Inputs from the forensic department will also be included," said the official. Earlier, the Crime Branch Unit of Pune Police, which is probing the high-profile case, continued its interrogation of two doctors who were arrested in the case. Both doctors were remanded to police custody by the district court until May 30. Pune police arrested the doctors, Dr Ajay Taware, HOD of the forensic medicine department, and Chief Medical Officer Dr Srihari Halnor, along with another staff member, Atul Ghatkamble. The trio was arrested for manipulating blood samples taken from the minor accused after the incident at Sassoon Hospital. When asked about the multiple media reports published that there was a call exchange between Dr Ajay Taware and MLA Tingre after the incident in the early hours of May 20, the senior official of Pune police confirmed that as of now there is no connection established between MLA Tingre and Dr Taware. "We have also not found any call records till now between these two in the investigation," the police official told on Tuesday. "Pune police are currently trying to find out the details of with whom the blood samples were swapped and are also trying to establish the financial trail in the case, including how much money Dr Taware received or was promised by the minor's father," they added. And, every now and then, head home and take a doping test.The world-champion sprinter is one of 15 American athletes who have volunteered to conduct in-home drug tests on themselves as part of a pilot program being run by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. With anti-doping collections severely curtailed across the globe because of the coronavirus pandemic, USADA is looking at new options, in this case by asking a group of leading Americans to give urine and small dried blood samples at home."They asked me to do it, and I wasn't opposed to doing it," Lyles said. "It's a way to get my drug test in." Athletes are still required to fill out their whereabouts forms, and under this program, a doping control officer will connect with an athlete via Zoom or FaceTime during a prescribed window.Athletes receive test kits at home and head into their bathroom to give urine samples while leaving their laptops outside the room. Under normal circumstances, the officer would come to the house (or wherever the athlete was at the time) and stand outside the bathroom.In this case, the officer looks on via the camera while the athletes are timed and their temperatures are monitored to ensure they are giving the samples in real time.The blood test uses a new technology - dry blood sampling - in which athletes prick their arms and small droplets of blood funnel into a container. Piot is the third from the left in the middle row, wearing the colorful shirt.</img></div></div></div>When Ebola first arrived in Europe on September 29, 1976, the vials of the virus were carried from Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in a shiny blue thermos on a passenger flight.
Three lab workers in Antwerp, Belgium, received the thermos and prepared to open it on a lab bench. The precautions they took and the room they were in were appropriate for handling organisms like salmonella or tuberculosis, with none of the security procedures or body suits that we now associate with manipulating Biosafety Level 4 pathogens like Ebola.
All the lab team knew was that they were receiving blood samples from an unusual epidemic that was suspected to possibly be some form of "yellow fever with hemorrhagic manifestations," according to Peter Piot, one of the three in the room and a co-discoverer of the Ebola virus. Piot wrote about the experience in his book "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/No-Time-Lose-Pursuit-Viruses/dp/039306316X" target="_blank">No Time to Lose: A Life in Pursuit of Deadly Viruses</a>."
Wearing latex gloves and no other protection, they opened the cheap plastic thermos that was supposed to hold two glass vials of blood that had been drawn from a Flemish nun who was too sick to be evacuated from the Congo.
One of the vials was broken - the thermos hadn't been stored carefully enough on the passenger plane that carried it from Kinshasa.

Piot, who was a 27-year-old medical school graduate and junior lab worker at the time, describes that moment:
<blockquote class="blockquote">We didn't even imagine the risk we were taking. Indeed, shipping those blood samples in a simple thermos, without any kind of precaution, was an incredibly perilous act. Maybe the world was a simpler, more innocent place in those days, or maybe it was just a lot more reckless.</blockquote>
If they had any idea what Ebola was at the time, it would have been shipped to one of the three non-Soviet labs that were considered able to handle hemorrhagic viruses.
But since the team had no idea of exactly what they had received, Piot's two co-workers, postdoc student René Delgadillo and Guido Van Der Groen, reached into the soupy viral mess and picked out the intact vial.
"It makes me wince just to think of it," Piot writes.
To isolate the virus, the three - still maskless and with no protection but gloves - injected the blood into cell cultures and into the brains of adult and baby mice ("I never liked this aspect of the work," Piot writes).
They tested the blood, cell cultures, and mice over the next several days for known hemorrhagic diseases like yellow fever and Lassa fever, but antibodies for those diseases never turned up. Their boss, Stefaan Pattyn, looked into the epidemic itself, and found a village called Yambuku that seemed to be the origin.
The Flemish nun had died on September 30, and pieces of her liver were flown to Belgium on yet another passenger flight.

Piot says that at this point, he was "inflamed" with interest and "loved the detective thrill." His medical school advisor had told him to stay away from infectious diseases since "they've all been solved," a statement that, looking back on it, was quite naive.
This one hadn't been solved, and seemed like the chance to both discover something new and to save lives.
Piot still didn't know how incredibly deadly the virus is - that it was a hemmorhagic fever was strongly suspected but still not confirmed - but all evidence pointed to something grave. The World Health Organization ordered the samples shipped to one of the only labs equipped for hemorrhagic viruses, Porton Down in Britain, and from there they were sent to the CDC in Atlanta, considered the reference library for these types of diseases.
But despite the fact that they knew enough to know that the virus shouldn't stay in the Belgian lab, Pattyn kept a few samples. "By this point for him to keep us working on these samples was sheer folly," Piot writes. "He knew we were not equipped to do the work in safety."
Piot doesn't know why exactly - perhaps Pattyn was reluctant to send away what they'd been first to examine. "It was new, it was exciting - just too exciting to hand it over to the Brits or, in particular, to the Americans," he writes. They kept a few cell cultures and some newly-infected mice, Pattyn claiming they needed a few more days before they were ready for transport. And they kept examining them to see what they could find.
Before long, something went wrong. Pattyn, who was in charge but was a little clumsy in the lab itself, according to Piot, dropped an Ebola vial on the floor, where it shattered onto Delgadillo's shoes.
"Godverdomme," goddamn, said Pattyn. They disinfected the floor and removed the shoes.

After the cells they'd kept were ready for analysis, the lab technicians took a sample and took pictures with an electron microscope. The virus was huge. Piot said they saw "very large, long, wormlike structures: nothing like yellow fever."
Pattyn realized that it looked like the longest known virus in existence, a rare lethal hemorrhagic fever called Marburg that had killed a number of lab workers in Germany nine years before, after they'd handled infected monkeys.
They finally realized their folly and sent the rest of the samples to the high-security CDC labs. If the virus was Marburg or something related, they knew that they lacked the equipment to study it.
And they started looking for money to go to Zaire and see the outbreak for themselves.
Confirmation soon arrived from the CDC that the virus was not Marburg, it was something new. This was the first time the world recognized the virus that came to be known and feared as Ebola. That 1976 Zaire outbreak gave the virus its name, and killed 88% of those infected, 280 people - the most of any outbreak until the current one.

They might sound like angry hornets before they bring you food, or closer to the sound of air hissing out of a tire before they sampled your earwax. Eventually you might learn some tricks to induce one pattern of sounds and keep the other away.That's about where neuroscience stands when it comes to reading and interacting with the complex structures of the brain. Researchers can identify and record specific patterns that occur again and again when a person has a specific kind thought.And <a href="http://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=info:doi/10.1371/journal.pbio.1002546">a new study</a> shows they can - through some clever trickery - trigger those patterns again later and cause people to have those same sorts of thoughts.Here's how it worked.The researchers placed study subjects in an fMRI, a scanner that tracks blood flow in the brain, and showed them hundreds of pictures of faces. The subjects rated how they felt about each face on a 1-10 scale.Later, they had the subjects play a game. The goal: to make a green circle grow or shrink with their minds, no instructions given.The computer was programmed to grow the circle when activity patterns in the the subjects' cingulate cortex (a portion of the brain they believe is related to making judgments about faces) resembled the activity patterns recorded in those individuals when they looked at faces they liked.Amazingly, when the researchers showed the subjects faces they'd previously given neutral ratings, they rated those faces much more highly - while a control group of subjects who didn't play the game didn't. Subjects instructed to shrink the circle gave the faces lower ratings.It's part of a series of studies the research team has conducted in which they've shown they can use this technique to influence people's feelings.So what does this mean?In the near-term, it means that a part of the brain called the cingulate cortex likely plays a role in our feelings about people's faces.But in the long term, this is a sign of something even more interesting.Neuroscience has taken a significant step toward engaging with the brain in its own language. Researchers can't (yet, at least) read fine-grained detailed meaning into the brain's behavior - that is, speak its language. But they can recognize the significance of patterns.And now, they've shown, they can manipulate those patterns and influence the still-mysterious conversation the brain has with itself.
