<ul><li><keyword id="6354356" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="blackberry" source="Orion">Blackberry</keyword> is ending support to all its legacy devices starting January 4, 2022.</li><li>The company was once a popular mobile phone brand.</li><li>Lack of innovation and the advent of the iPhone was one of the key factors for its end. </li></ul>In the year 1999, Blackberry launched its first handheld device in the form of a two-way pager. And since then, the company has seen it all — the rise, the fall and the end. If we go back in time, Nokia and Blackberry were the most popular cellular mobile brands in the 2000s, however, the advent of <keyword id="6354427" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="apple" source="Orion">Apple</keyword>’s iPhones in 2007 led to the end of both these brands in the mobile phone segment. In the second half of the 2000s, Blackberry released mobile phones such as Curve Bold, Pearl and others that became widely popular among both corporate consumers as well as normal users. It was not just the QWERTY keypad that stood out of Blackberry, but applications such as Blackberry Messenger (BBM) were extremely popular, even among the youngsters. The ability to mail, text and use the internet on the go made the devices popular among business professionals. In late 2008, Blackberry tested a full-touch screen phone, BlackBerry Storm, to take on the iPhone released a year earlier, but the failure of the device due to sluggish performance made Blackberry go back to the full QWERTY keypad phones even on its touch-screen devices that launched later. The release of the iPhone 4 in 2010 was the beginning of the end for Blackberry as it became the most popular smartphone in the US. Although, Blackberry had not considered iPhones and <keyword id="6355645" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="android" source="Orion">Android</keyword>-based phones as a threat because of its offerings primarily focusing on corporates and business professionals. However, the users started to feel what the Blackberry lacked and they started to make switches to the iPhones or the early Android phones. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Lack of innovation" comment="subhead" text="Lack of innovation">Lack of innovation</cmsannotation> One of the key reasons for the fall of Blackberry was a lack of innovation, as the company could not compete with full-touch displays of iPhones. Both iOS and Android-based phones offered their users plenty of applications for their day to day usage, however, Blackberry had no such offerings. Another lacklustre offering of the Blackberry was its front and back cameras. When Apple and Android-based devices started offering better resolutions through their front and back cameras, Blackberry did not consider upping its game and continued to provide basic camera specifications. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="End of an era" comment="subhead" text="End of an era">End of an era</cmsannotation> As the company failed to meet consumer expectations, the company stopped making smartphones based on its own operating system. It started launching smartphones based on Android OS. In 2016, it signed a deal with China’s TCL to design and manufacture BlackBerry hardware while the company provides the software. These phones ran on Android OS, providing users with apps and customisation features while offering better security. The last Blackberry phone launched in the market was BlackBerry Key2. There has been no smartphone release since then. And now with the<a href="https://www.blackberry.com/us/en/support/devices/end-of-life"> announcement of ending the software support</a> and legacy services on its devices with effect from January 4, 2022, the company has ended its operations in the smartphone segment for good. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Who will it impact?" comment="subhead" text="Who will it impact?">Who will it impact?</cmsannotation> According to the announcement, legacy services and software will no longer work be it on Wi-Fi connections or cellular. Users having classic Blackberry devices running on BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 software, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions will stop working. The Blackberry 10 software launched in 2013, so these devices are quite old and Blackberry has supported them for a longer time than promised. So the number of users impacted by this will be significantly small. Users still on these devices will no longer be able to use data, make phone calls, send SMS and or use emergency call services. However, Blackberry smartphones running on Android OS will not be impacted, until and unless a user continues to use Blackberry's email services as they will have to migrate to a new service. If you are still using any of Blackberry's unsupported devices, you do not have an option but to switch to a new smartphone. The end of Blackberry mobile: Once owned by millions, now ends all its legacy services

Encrypted messaging app <keyword id="1275203" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="telegram" source="Orion">Telegram</keyword> has started rolling out its latest update for its iPhone as well as iPad app with several new features, including message reactions, translation, hidden text and more. Users can now double tap on a message bubble and a small thumbs-up emoji will appear at the bottom of that message. A user can change the emoji for this <keyword id="1426977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quick-reaction" source="Orion">quick reaction</keyword> in the app under Settings &gt; Stickers and Emoji &gt; Quick Reaction. For more reactions, tap and hold on a message bubble. Telegram is also rolling out support for "Spoiler Alert" messages that blur out selected portions of text until a user clicks on the option. Now one can translate any message into another language, right in the app. Enabling Translation in Settings &gt; Language adds a dedicated Translate button to the context menu when selecting a message. One can also exclude any languages you speak fluently - which will hide the translate button for those messages. Translation is available on all Android devices that support Telegram, but requires iOS 15+ on Apple devices. The list of available languages depends on the user's phone's operating system. Another new feature is the ability to generate themed QR codes for any users that have a public username, as well as for groups, channels, and bots. Tap the new QR code icon next to the username of a person (or from a chat's info page), choose the colours and pattern that fit best, then print, post or share your QR code to other apps. 10 Awesome Free Things That Hardly Anybody Knows About

There is little doubt that Blackberry is a brand in peril. With the news late last week that the company would be shedding almost 40% of their staff on the back of a $1 billion loss last quarter, it is little wonder Blackberry's leadership placed a trading halt on the company's stock while they held talks with private equity firms.
How the mighty have fallen. Far from the heady days where Blackberry held the dominant position in an emerging smartphone market, recent years have seen the company struggle to maintain any foothold in a sector increasingly dominated by Apple, Samsung and various Android devices. Today, Blackberry accounts for a mere 3.8% market share in the US - down from 43% in January 2010.
In considering the demise of such an iconic brand, the question of course if what could they have done differently? Were there tactics that could have been employed in years past that could have seen Blackberry avoid their current collision course with irrelevance?
Having tracked over 500 brands in recent years examining what distinguishes the enduring from the endangered, I would suggest that there are at least 5 things Blackberry could have done differently. They could have:
1. Been willing to embrace new hardware formats. 
Although the full QWERTY keyboard had become a key function of Blackberry's market uniqueness, the point stands that the company waited far too long to release a touch screen device. While the rest of the market was shifting away from in-built keyboards, Blackberry doggedly stuck with their tried and true format and quickly lost appeal to a new generation of consumers.
Naturally, such a deviation from the past would have lost Blackberry some cred with it's existing fans and could have eroded their market uniqueness. However, letting go of this tried and true design from the past was in fact a critical step for the future.
As Steve Jobs once observed, 'if you aren't willing the cannibalise your own product, someone else will do it for you.'
2. Recognized much earlier that consumer desires were changing. 
In the early days, Blackberry won favour due to the robust security of features such as the company's email solution. While this worked well for wooing a corporate market, Blackberry failed to recognize that sexy features were quickly taking precedence over software security in the mind of an average consumer.
As the role of a smartphones increasingly grew beyond phone functionality, Blackberry got stuck selling features that mattered less and less to their customers.
3. Made more fundamental changes to its operating system. 
Blackberry stayed too safe for too long. While rivals were releasing vastly new operating systems for their devices, each new Blackberry release was only an incremental improvement on its predecessor.
In this, there lie lessons for other smartphone producers such as Apple. Evolutionary change is not enough in the fats-moving technology space. Revolutionary innovation is required to stay ahead of both the curve and competition.
4. Been more outwardly open and flexible.
Blackberry's rules and restrictions around app development were recently described as 'draconian' by one industry insider.
Such a rigid and restrictive approach actively dissuaded external innovation and resulted in Blackberry being left behind as Apple and Android smartphones were becoming increasingly app-driven.
5. Recognized the shift
The company could have better recognized the threat posed by the Bring your Own Device shift. While Blackberries were once the company-issue handset of choice, as white-collar employees began bringing their own devices to work en masse in the late 2000s, Blackberry executives raised the alarm.
Despite this, company CEO Jim Balsillie famously dismissed their concerns as not worth worrying about - an error in judgment that has cost the company very dearly.
In reality, had Blackberry and their leadership preempted this shift rather than ignoring it, they could have taken steps to mitigate the damage.
While a world without Blackberry may have been inconceivable just a few short years ago, this possibility is one that is becoming very real. Just as Nokia recently agreed to join the Microsoft fold in an effort to stave off annihilation, Blackberry will need to make some very difficult choices in the months to come if they have any hope of survival.
