<br />Scientists believe that this could be the result of an enormous energetic burst that erupted near the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/milky-ways-quiet-wimpy-black-hole-is-getting-hungrier-and-brighter/articleshow/71098006.cms">Milky Way's supermassive black hole</a> hundreds of years ago, according to their study published in <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-02726-x">Nature</a>.<br /><br />The bubbles had not been spotted so far because their signal melded with all the other bright radio emissions from the center of the galaxy. <br /><br />In order to observe the phenomenon accurately, the internal team of astronomers had to take out all other background noise using the MeerKAT Telescope at the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO).<br /><br /><strong>Bubbles with an 'hourglass' figure<br /></strong><br />The radio bubbles are identical when its comes to shape and size, according to the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (<a href="https://public.nrao.edu/news/2019-balloon-features-galactic-center/">NRAO</a>).<br /><br /><div type="image" title="bubbles" msid="71106412" hostid="261"></div>

<br />Because of bubbles' 'hourglass'-like shape, astronomers were able to determine that such similarities can only mean that they were formed from a violent eruption. The eruption would have moved quickly, ending as quickly as it started — punching through space in opposite directions.<br /><br />"This eruption was possibly triggered by vast amounts of interstellar gas falling in on the black hole, or a massive burst of star formation which sent shockwaves careening through the galactic center," stated William Cotton, an astronomer with NRAO and co-author of the study.<br /><br />The resulting hot and ionized gas inflated the bubbles, energizing them and generating radio waves that can now be detected from Earth, according to Cotton.<br /><br /><strong>Solving the mystery of the Milky Way's <keyword id="2104882" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="supermassive-black-hole">supermassive black hole</keyword><br /></strong><br />The region that surrounds the Milky Way's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/our-very-own-black-hole-in-the-milky-way-doesnt-quite-eat-up-everything/articleshow/69684893.cms">supermassive black hole</a> is quite different from the rest of the galaxy. There's also a lot about it that scientists are yet to understand.<br /><br />One of mysteries are very long and narrow filaments that aren't found anywhere else except in that region. They were first discovered 35 years ago and show up at radio structures that are tens of light years long and only one light year wide.<br /><br />But there might be a new clue to help find the answer. Each of the radio bubbles spotted contain more than a hundred of these filaments.<br /><br />Since the bubbles originated from a big explosion around the Milky Way's black hole, it's possible that its also where these filaments were formed. Two massive bubbles stretch 700 light years above and below the center of the Milky Way

"Our work has placed an important piece in the largely incomplete puzzle that is the formation and growth of such extreme, yet relatively abundant, objects so quickly after the Big Bang," says co-author Roberto Gilli.<br /><br />Though astronomers have struggled to explain that conundrum, the web-like structure is now at least one possible theory. The web, along with the galaxies within it, contains enough gas to provide fuel for the central black hole to grow into a supermassive giant.<br /><br />The study proposes that the key to the formation of these web-like structures are ‘giant halos of mysterious dark matter’.<br /><br />In the Early Universe, large regions of invisible matter are assumed to attract huge amounts of gas. Supermassive black hole traps six galaxies in a 'spider web' that is 300 times bigger than the Milky Way

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photo-international-space-station-hidden-passing-sun-2023-4">The sun</a> is slamming Earth with solar flares and high-speed eruptions of plasma.</li><li>Rarer events are picking up too, like a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-polar-vortex-video-from-solar-plasma-break-2023-2">solar polar vortex</a>, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/second-giant-coronal-hole-sun-solar-winds-space-weather-aurora-2023-3?r=US&amp;IR=T">holes on the sun</a>, and a sun tornado.</li></ul><p>From Earth, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronal-holes-definition-causes-sun-earth-cme-storm-winds-2023-3">the sun</a> may appear calm and quiet. But up close it's a turbulent nightmare. </p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-more-active-solar-storms-auroras-power-outages-grounded-flights-2023-2">And it's only getting more explosive.</a> A growing number of flares, eruptions, giant plasma arcs, and vast "holes" have been bursting from its surface, some of which are pointed at Earth.</p><p>That's because the sun is building to the peak of its 11-year cycle. Forecasters expected the peak, called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/next-solar-maximum-2025-what-expect-cycle-2023-4">solar maximum, to arrive in 2025</a>. But the explosion of solar activity in recent months suggests that <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-maximum-could-sooner-than-expected-2023-6">maximum could come early</a>, by the end of 2023.</p><p>While these <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/x-class-solar-flare-blasts-earth-more-sun-activity-likely-2023-3">solar eruptions</a> aren't immediately harmful to humans on Earth, they do pose a threat to satellites and certain tech on the ground like power grids.</p><p>That's why NASA has multiple observatories keeping a close eye on the sun to help understand and better anticipate its many different types of violent outbursts — some of which are many times <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sun-plasma-waterfall-60000-mile-tall-hot-matter-solar-earth-2023-4">larger than Earth</a> and are a stunning sight to behold.</p><div type="image" title="the sun up close in purple ultraviolet light with a bright purple and white star shaped solar flare erupting from the surface and earth superimposed nearby for scale much smaller than the solar flare" height="960" width="1536" msid="100022261" hostid="261"></div><p>Check out some of the different types below.</p><h2>Solar flares can have the power of 1 billion hydrogen bombs</h2><div type="image" title="blue sun rotating in space with roiling bright spots suddenly a bright flash of light bursts from the surface on the lower right" height="600" width="600" msid="100022262" hostid="261"></div><p>The sun is a ball of boiling gas and plasma, comprised of ultrahot charged particles. Their movement creates magnetic fields.</p><p>As the sun rotates, its magnetic fields can get contorted and tangled, building tension, until they explosively snap back into place like rubber bands.</p><p>The release of that energy can cause a powerful burst of light and radiation — a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-flare-coronal-eruption-geomagnetic-storm-effects-safety">solar flare</a>.</p><div type="image" title="gif of solar surface with a burst of orange plasma erupting from a bright spot into space" height="500" width="500" msid="100022263" hostid="261"></div><p>Flares are classified by their strength, from the weakest B class, then C, M, and X. The most powerful X flares have the energy equivalent of one billion hydrogen bombs, which is enough to power the whole world for 20,000 years, according to <a href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/solarcycle25/">NASA</a>.</p><p>As the sun builds toward its maximum, solar flares, like X flares, will likely become more frequent.</p><h2>Coronal mass ejections, aka high-speed space plasma</h2><div type="image" title="coronal mass ejection cme solar eruption gif" height="1024" width="1024" msid="100022264" hostid="261"></div><p>Sometimes solar flares occur alongside a coronal mass ejection (CME). That's a high-velocity eruption of plasma with embedded magnetic fields bursting from the sun's outer layer, the corona.</p><p>NASA and the European Space Agency captured footage of a CME shooting out from the sun and traveling through space, using their Solar Orbiter spacecraft, in the below video.</p><p>CMEs are common culprits of solar storms on Earth, since they can send a powerful flood of solar particles washing over the planet.</p><p>That supercharges the normal stream of charged particles that the sun is always sending toward us, called the solar wind.</p><div type="image" title="Solar Wind" height="360" width="640" msid="100022265" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/solar-storms-flares-dangerous-effects-earth-sun">Solar particles flooding Earth</a> have knocked out power grids, silenced radio signals, pushed satellites out of orbit, disarmed GPS, and even damaged technology on the space station.</p><p>The fastest CMEs can reach Earth in just 15 hours, while others can take days to get here.</p><h2>Coronal holes open a highway for solar wind</h2><div type="image" title="A video from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory shows the massive hole in the sun's atmosphere." height="768" width="1024" msid="100022267" hostid="261"></div><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronal-hole-on-sun-blasts-solar-wind-toward-earth-2023-3">These aren't really holes</a>, but they're areas of the corona that are cooler in temperature, so they don't glow as bright as the rest of the sun. That makes them look black, like a deep hole, in images.</p><p>Because the coronal hole is lower in temperature, it's less dense. That lets the magnetic field lines straighten out and point directly into space, which allows the solar wind to flow out freely and quickly.</p><p>That's not usually enough to create a solar storm on Earth by itself, but when combined with a CME it can give the solar wind a powerful boost. That's what <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-aurora-northern-lights-rare-appearance-south-solar-storm-2023-3">brought the aurora borealis to Arizona</a> in March.</p><h2>Filaments, including a recent sun tornado and a solar polar vortex</h2><p>When magnetic field lines arc out into space, filaments of solar material often anchor them to the sun's surface until they become unstable. At that point, the filament either falls back to the sun or erupts into space.</p><p>One recent swirling filament on the sun grew to the height of 14 Earths and earned itself the tornado nickname.</p><div type="image" title="A video taken on March 17, 2023 shows a solar tornado spinning above the sun's surface." height="268" width="536" msid="100022268" hostid="261"></div><p>"A filament is a huge, twisted magnetic stricture that sits above the sun's surface, sometimes for months," Mathew Owens, a professor of space physics at the University of Reading, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-video-solar-tornado-plasma-2023-3">told Insider</a> after the tornado filament appeared in March.</p><p>The magnetic fields creating the tornado are invisible. The twister we see is the material anchoring those fields to the solar surface.</p><div type="image" title="The tornado is shown here on the surface of the sun." height="969" width="1292" msid="100022269" hostid="261"></div><p>In February, a different giant filament of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-esa-solar-orbiter-captured-video-of-sun-eruptions-2021-5" rel="">plasma</a> appeared to break away from the sun and swirl around its north pole — like a polar vortex. Here's what it looked like:</p><div type="image" title="video shows sun rotating ball of red plasma with a filament emerging from the top then breaking away and swirling around the north pole" height="800" width="800" msid="100022270" hostid="261"></div><p>Scott McIntosh, a solar physicist and deputy director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, told <a href="https://www.space.com/vortex-sun-poles" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Space.com</a> that a solar prominence appears in the same spot — at 55 degrees latitude — during every 11-year solar cycle.</p><p>It's probably related to the sun's magnetic field reversing every solar cycle, he said, but the exact mechanism causing it is a mystery.</p><p><em>This post has been updated with new information. Millions of years ago that eruption would have punched into the interstellar medium in opposite directions from the supermassive black hole.</p><p>If "galactic bubbles" sound a bit familiar, it's important to clarify that these are <em>not</em> the <a href="https://fermi.gsfc.nasa.gov/science/constellations/pages/bubbles.html">huge gamma-ray bubbles</a> discovered by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope in 2010, nicknamed "Fermi bubbles," spanning above and below the galactic plane for a total distance of 50,000 light-years.</p><p>These latest bubbles, described <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-1532-5">in a new study</a> in the journal Nature, are something new, and astronomers haven't seen them before. But they are amongst the biggest structures at the center of our galaxy, and they reveal new information about the dynamics of our galactic nucleus.</p><p>"The center of our galaxy is relatively calm when compared to other galaxies with very active central <a href="https://www.sciencealert.com/black-holes" target="_blank" title="black holes" rel="noopener">black holes</a>," <a href="http://www.ox.ac.uk/news/2019-09-11-towering-balloon-features-discovered-near-centre-milky-way">astrophysicist Ian Heywood of the University of Oxford said</a>.</p><p>"Even so, the Milky Way's central black hole can become uncharacteristically active, flaring up as it periodically devours massive clumps of dust and gas. It's possible that one such feeding frenzy triggered powerful outbursts that inflated this previously unseen feature," Heywood added.</p><h2>An accidental discovery by a South African telescope</h2><p>Hints of the structures <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1984Natur.310..557Y/abstract">first emerged in the 1980s</a>, when astronomer and physicist Farhad Yusef-Zadeh of Northwestern University and colleagues discovered something strange in the galactic center: long, thin, highly organised and highly magnetized filaments of gas, tens of light-years long and just one light-year wide, emitting <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchrotron_radiation">synchrotron</a> radio waves.</p><p>These strange structures hadn't been observed anywhere else, and their origin <a href="https://www.cfa.harvard.edu/news/2017-35">remained a mystery</a> for decades.</p><p>But something changed. The South African Radio Astronomy Observatory's <a href="http://www.ska.ac.za/science-engineering/meerkat/">MeerKAT telescope</a> was built, consisting of 64 interconnected radio antennae that offer "unprecedented" sensitivity in radio wavelengths, perfectly positioned in the Southern Hemisphere to take deep images of the galactic center.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MeerKAT_Radio_Telescope.jpg">Morganoshell/Wikimedia Commons</a></span></p><p class="caption">A photograph of the MeerKAT Radio Telescope, taken March 2016.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The international team turned the telescope on the heart of the Milky Way. And, for the first time, they were able to see the structures of these radio bubbles, faint but detectable, amidst the incredibly radio-bright glare in the region.</p><p>The event that caused it could be responsible for accelerating the electrons that resulted in the synchrotron emission observed in the filaments in the galactic center.</p><p>"The radio bubbles discovered with MeerKAT now shed light on the origin of the filaments," <a href="http://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2019/09/milky-way/">Yusef-Zadeh said</a>. "Almost all of the more than 100 filaments are confined by the radio bubbles."</p><h2>'A staggeringly powerful event ... near our galaxy's central black hole'</h2><p>The entire hourglass-shaped structure extends 1,400 light-years, and is unusually symmetrical. This symmetry provides some clues as to what created them; the size, constrained by the speed of light, puts an upper limit of a few million years on their age.</p><p>"The shape and symmetry of what we have observed strongly suggests that a staggeringly powerful event happened a few million years ago very near our galaxy's central black hole," astronomer William Cotton from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory said.</p><p>This eruption was possibly triggered by vast amounts of interstellar gas falling in on the black hole, or a massive burst of star formation which sent shockwaves careening through the galactic center.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_hole#mediaviewer/File:PIA16695-BlackHole-Corona-20130227.jpg">NASA/JPL/Caltech</a></span></p><p class="caption">Artist's impression of a black hole.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>"In effect, this inflated energetic bubbles in the hot, ionized gas near the galactic center, energizing it and generating radio waves which we could eventually detect here on Earth," Cotton added.</p><p>Although the radio bubbles are smaller and less energetic than the Fermi bubbles - it's possible that similar events created both sets of bubbles, the researchers said.</p><p>It's even possible that both sets of bubbles were created by a linked series of events. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Astronomers have captured a photo of two supermassive black holes caught in the collision of two galaxies.</li><li>The galaxies are merging to form a new galaxy, called NGC 6240.</li><li>The image suggests that the two black holes are much less massive than astronomers anticipated.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Businessinsider.com for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>It takes <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2018/astronomers-unveil-growing-black-holes-in-colliding-galaxies">more than a billion years</a> for a pair of galaxies to merge.</p><p>But in the constellation of Ophiuchus, about 400 million light-years from Earth, two galaxies are almost ready to become one. </p><p>The galaxies are in the process of violently crashing into one another. Astronomers estimate it will take them another 10 to 20 million years to fuse completely; at that point, they'll form a new galaxy called NGC 6240. </p><p>Both galaxies contain a supermassive black hole in their center, and those are expected to merge as well.</p><p>This whole process is difficult to capture on camera, however. Black holes' gravity is so strong that nothing can escape - not even light - so astronomers attempting to see them have to rely on light from the matter that gets sucked in (before it disappears). The <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/scientists-first-black-hole-photo-breakthrough-prize-2019-9">first-ever photograph of a supermassive black hole</a> was published in April 2019.</p><p>But an international team of astronomers recently captured a sharp photo that shows how two supermassive black holes are caught in the galactic collision that's forming the NGC 6240 galaxy.</p><p>The astronomers used the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), a powerful telescope funded in part by the US National Science Foundation, to assemble the image. They presented their research at the annual  meeting of the American Astronomical Society  in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Sunday. </p><p>The black holes themselves aren't visible in the photo, but you can see the glowing gas that surrounds them (the blue stuff in the images below). </p>That gas is located within the black holes' "sphere of influence" - the innermost region of a galaxy where the black hole is the dominant force of gravity. The two black holes are feeding on the gas, which causes them to grow bigger as the galaxies merge. Previous images weren't able to capture this gas in such detail. <h2>'A chaotic stream of gas'</h2><p>Ezequiel Treister, an associate astronomy professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica in Santiago, Chile, told the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) that the <a href="https://public.nrao.edu/news/the-turbulent-life-of-two-supermassive-black-holes-caught-in-a-galaxy-crash/">gas doesn't form a rotating disk</a>, as some scientists anticipated.</p><p>"We don't find any evidence for that," he said. "Instead, we see a chaotic stream of gas with filaments and bubbles between the black holes. Some of this gas is ejected outwards with speeds up to 500 kilometers per second. We don't know yet what causes these outflows."</p><p>Gas that isn't ejected from the sphere of influence will likely get sucked into the black hole.</p><h2>The black holes are less massive than researchers expected</h2><p>The image also challenges astronomers' ideas about the masses of these particular black holes. By observing the photo, the team found that a lot of the gas was stuck in the spheres of influence instead of the black holes themselves. That means the black holes are much less massive than anticipated.</p><p>Until recently, astronomers believed that the supermassive black holes in the NGC 6240 galaxy had a mass equivalent to about 1 billion suns. The new photo suggests, however, that the black holes are about as massive as a few hundred million suns. </p><p>The finding suggests black holes involved in other galaxy collisions could also be smaller than expected. </p><p>"This galaxy is so complex that we could never know what is going on inside it without these detailed radio images," Loreto Barcos-Muñoz, a researcher at the NRAO, said <a href="https://public.nrao.edu/news/the-turbulent-life-of-two-supermassive-black-holes-caught-in-a-galaxy-crash/#PRimage3">in a statement</a>. "We now have a better idea of the 3D structure of the galaxy, which gives us the opportunity to understand how galaxies evolve during the latest stages of an ongoing merger."</p><p>Our own Milky Way galaxy is expected to merge with the nearby Andromeda galaxy in about 4 billion years.</p>

A pair of supermassive black holes are stuck in a collision between galaxies. Astronomers caught the chaos on camera.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>JWST spotted ten galaxies connected by an invisible cosmic filament. </li><li>The filament, which is millions of light years long, is the earliest ever seen. </li></ul><p>NASA's James Webb Telescope has spotted a string of ancient galaxies connected by a cosmic filament dating back to the early days of the universe.</p><p>This is the earliest filament ever seen of the so-called "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-dark-matter-would-look-like-simulation-haloes-2020-9?r=US&amp;IR=T">cosmic web,</a>" a mysterious network that connects the galaxies in our universe.</p><p>The filament is thought to be about three million light-years long. That is billions of times the distance from Earth to Mars.</p><p>Its discovery could shed light on how our universe formed and the invisible strings that hold it together. </p><p>"I was surprised by how long and how narrow this filament is," <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2023/nasa-s-webb-identifies-the-earliest-strands-of-the-cosmic-web" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Xiaohui Fan of the University of Arizona and a member of the ASPIRE consortium of researchers who made the discovery, in a press release about the finding.</p><p>"I expected to find something, but I didn't expect such a long, distinctly thin structure."</p><h2>Galaxies are connected by a cosmic web</h2><div type="image" title="An artist's impression of the cosmic web shows a network of filaments in purple. Areas that are denser appear in yellow." height="404" width="809" msid="101641427" hostid="261"></div><p>Looking at pictures of the universe, it could be tempting to think that galaxies appear randomly out of nothing.</p><p>But over the past 20 years, research has uncovered the universe is built on a sort of scaffolding, a series of filaments and clumps invisible to the naked eye. </p><p>In these clumps,  <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dark-matter-map-universe-galaxies-cosmic-voids-2021-5">dark matter</a> and regular matter become very dense, creating the perfect conditions for the birth of stars and galaxies. </p><p>Between these clumps and filaments are "very low-density regions of the universe where there are very few galaxies and less matter," Niall Jeffrey, a cosmologist at University College London, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dark-matter-map-universe-galaxies-cosmic-voids-2021-5?r=US&amp;IR=T">previously told</a> the Guardian. </p><p>Peering back into the early stages of the universe can give us a sense of how galaxies appeared within this mysterious network. </p><h2>Earliest filament ever seen</h2><p>The filament appeared about 830 million years after the Big Bang, very early on considering the universe is about 13 billion years old.</p><p>While the filament itself is invisible, it's possible to see how it brings galaxies together. It goes through ten galaxies that appear as tiny red dots on the picture, meaning their light comes from the earliest recesses of the universe.</p><p>A close-up of three of these galaxies is shown below.  </p><div type="image" title="A close up of three of the galaxies shows the quasar that is anchoring the galaxies." height="560" width="746" msid="101641432" hostid="261"></div><p>A quasar, a luminous supermassive black hole, is thought to be anchoring the filament, researchers said. It is highlighted by the red arrow in the picture above.</p><p>The team believes that eventually the galaxies will be pulled together into a cluster, much like the nearby <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/chandra/news/galaxies-go-on-a-deep-dive-and-leave-fiery-tail-behind.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Coma galaxy cluster. </a></p><p>The ASPIRE team hopes the picture will shed more light on the cosmic web, but it is also very interested in how early quasars were formed in the universe's infancy. </p><p>"The last two decades of cosmology research have given us a robust understanding of how the cosmic web forms and evolves," said team member Joseph Hennawi of the University of California, Santa Barbara, in the press release. </p><p>"ASPIRE aims to understand how to embed the emergence of the earliest massive black holes into our current story of cosmic structure formation," he said. </p>

NASA's James Webb telescope discovers the earliest strand of a mysterious 'cosmic web' that links galaxies

<ul class="summary-list"><li>The James Webb Space Telescope can capture a more complete view of galaxies, stars, and planets.</li><li>The powerful telescope is 100 times stronger than its predecessor, Hubble, and uses infrared light.</li></ul><p>NASA's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-first-year-in-space-2021-12">James Webb Space Telescope</a> has been delivering mind-blowing views of the cosmos since it began science operations in the summer of 2022.</p><p>Before Webb, astronomers had another workhorse cosmic observatory: the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-infared-early-universe-hubble-ultraviolet-insights-breathtaking-images-2022-8">Hubble Space Telescope</a>. Both are space-based telescopes, but they differ in many ways. Hubble sees ultraviolet light, visible light, and a small slice of infrared, while Webb looks at the universe across the infrared spectrum.</p><p>Webb is 100 times stronger than Hubble, which allows astronomers to peer even further into space. As its first year of observations has proved, Webb is capable of taking the most striking shots yet of the universe.</p><h2>JWST showed some rings of Uranus that Hubble just can't grasp</h2><div type="image" title="A side by side comparison of recent pictures of Uranus shows the rings much brighter when taken with JWST than Hubble.  The pictures are annotated and read &quot;Hubble&quot; and &quot;JWST&quot;" height="999" width="1999" msid="100684343" hostid="261"></div><p>NASA published this <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uranus-images-shows-nasa-jwst-james-webb-outclasses-hubble-rings-2023-s?r=US&amp;IR=T">new picture</a> of Uranus — our neighborhood icy giant — taken by Webb in April 2023.</p><p>The new shot shows 11 of the planet's 13 rings clearly, including two rings that had only before been spotted by NASA's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-voyager-pictures-45-year-journey-neptune-uranus-saturn-earth-2022-6?r=US&amp;IR=T">Voyager 2</a> probe while it flew by the planet in 1986, and by a superpowered Earth-based observatory called the Keck.</p><p>By comparison, even the outer rings of Uranus appear faint on a picture taken by Hubble in 2022.</p><p>That being said, Webb still has some competition. Hubble previously spotted the two outer rings that are missing from Webb's latest photo of Uranus. </p><p>The Webb picture above, however, was snapped very quickly — in about 12 minutes. Scientists hope if they can spend more of the behemoth's time on Uranus, they could learn a lot about its rings and its mysterious atmosphere, NASA <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2023/nasa-s-webb-scores-another-ringed-world-with-new-image-of-uranus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a press release on April 6.</p><h2>Webb provided sharp views of Jupiter's auroras and storms that Hubble can't see</h2><div type="image" title="Hubble image of Jupiter (left) JWST image of Jupiter (right)" height="1000" width="2000" msid="95984249" hostid="261"></div><p>In August 2022, Webb <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jupiter-images-webb-sees-rings-moons-hubble-cant-2022-8">snapped images of Jupiter</a> — the largest planet in our solar system. When compared to Hubble's images of the gas giant, above on the left, Webb offers a sharper and crisper image and showcases new details of Jupiter's auroras and storm systems.</p><p>In Webb's image of Jupiter, above on the right, the planet's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jupiter-great-red-spot-depth-nasa-juno-2021-10">Great Red Spot</a> — an enormous storm that has been swirling for centuries — is so bright with reflected sunlight that it appears white.</p><p>Webb's infrared image also shows Jupiter's auroras lighting up both the planet's poles. Auroras are colorful displays of light that are not unique to Earth. Jupiter has the most powerful auroras in the solar system, according to <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/jupiter-s-aurora-presents-a-powerful-mystery/" rel="">NASA</a>.</p><p>On both Earth and Jupiter, auroras occur when charged particles from the sun interact with the magnetic field — known as the magnetosphere — that surrounds a planet. Jupiter's magnetic field is about <a href="https://lasp.colorado.edu/outerplanets/giantplanets_magnetospheres.php#jupiter" rel="">20,000 times stronger</a> than Earth's.</p><h2>Webb revealed thread-like filaments in the Orion Nebula hidden to Hubble</h2><div type="image" title="Hubble image of the Orion Nebula, left. JWST image of the Orion Nebula, right." height="1440" width="2565" msid="95984251" hostid="261"></div><p>NASA released images of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-photos-orion-nebula-show-features-hidden-to-hubble-2022-9">the Orion Nebula</a> — a massive star-forming region 1,350 light-years from Earth — that Webb took in September 2022. The nebula is the nearest stellar nursery to us.</p><p>Dense clouds of cosmic dust in the nebula obscure star-forming structures from instruments that rely on visible light, like in Hubble's image of the nebula, above to the left. By <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-team-unveils-nasa-space-telescope-first-images-2022-7" rel="">gathering infrared light</a>, Webb is able to peer through those layers of dust, giving astronomers unprecedented views of the nebula's various components.</p><p>Astronomers believe nebulae are clouds dominated by vast, tangled, thread-like structures, called filaments, which feed material like gas to form and fuel stars. Webb's images reveal these gaseous threads in great detail.</p><h2><strong>Webb's infrared technology allows it to detect elements like methyl cation that Hubble cannot</strong></h2><div type="image" title="A side-by-side image of the Orion Nebula from the Hubble Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope," height="900" width="1200" msid="101677170" hostid="261" sizebytes="15296"></div><p>Webb's images of the Orion Nebula had more information to reveal. In June 2023, researchers reported that the powerful space telescope had detected one of the key building blocks for life, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-space-telescope-found-molecular-building-block-life-orion-nebula-2023-6">methyl cation (CH3<sup>+</sup>), for the first time in space</a>.</p><p>Methyl cation can induce chemical reactions to form more-complex carbon molecules and are fundamental for organic chemistry and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-telescope-captures-enceladus-water-plume-thousands-miles-long-2023-5">potential life</a>. Its existence in the universe was theoretical until Webb found it. The researchers speculate that UV radiation provided the energy source necessary for its formation. </p><p>"This clearly shows that ultraviolet radiation can completely change the chemistry of a protoplanetary disk," Olivier Berné of the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Toulouse, lead author of the study, <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/goddard/2023/webb-makes-first-detection-of-crucial-carbon-molecule" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said in a statement</a>. "It might actually play a critical role in the early chemical stages of the origins of life." </p><p>Though Hubble <a href="https://esahubble.org/images/heic0917aw/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously studied</a> the Orion Nebula, it doesn't have the same light sensitivity as Webb. Chemical elements in stars and nebulae emit and absorb light at different wavelengths. The newer telescope analyzes infrared light from these objects to identify the elements. The capability has also helped Webb detect <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-detects-water-on-distant-planet-2022-7">water vapor</a> and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-space-telescope-detects-sand-storms-distant-planet-2023-3">sand-like particles</a> in the atmosphere of far-away planets.</p><h2>Webb revealed hundreds of stars Hubble couldn't see in the epic Pillars of Creation</h2><div type="image" title="NASA's Hubble Space Telescope made the Pillars of Creation famous with its first image in 1995, but revisited the scene in 2014 to reveal a sharper, wider view in visible light, shown above at left. The epic stellar nursery is within the vast Eagle Nebula, a cloud of dust and gas 6,500 light-years away.</p><p>Hubble also imaged the famous nursery in 1995, above to the left. When comparing the two images next to one another, Webb's camera pierces through solid columns of cosmic dust, revealing hundreds of stars that Hubble couldn't see.</p><h2>Webb spied countless galaxies that Hubble missed</h2><div type="image" title="A side by side collage of the same area taken by the Hubble and the James Webb space telescopes." height="1500" width="2000" msid="95984255" hostid="261"></div><p>One of the first images that NASA shared from Webb was a "deep field" image — a long-exposure observation of a region of the sky, which allows the telescope to capture the light of extremely faint, distant objects. The image took less than a day to capture, according to <a href="https://twitter.com/NASAWebb/status/1546621080298835970" rel=" nofollow">NASA</a>.</p><p>When unveiling the image in July 2022, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasas-webb-telescope-snaps-first-full-color-image-2022-7">NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said</a> that if you held a grain of sand at arm's length, that would represent the speck of universe you see in this image.</p><p>"The deep field image fills me with wonder and hope," Lisa Kaltenegger, professor of astronomy at Cornell University and director of the Carl Sagan Institute, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/james-webb-hunt-for-distant-worlds-some-may-harbor-life-2022-7">previously told Insider</a>.</p><p>A side-by-side of Hubble's deep field next to Webb's reveals just how much sharper and stronger the new space observatory is.</p><h2>Webb revealed 2 stars inside this nebula whereas Hubble only saw one</h2><div type="image" title="side-by-side images of a bubbly nebula with arrows pointing to the stars at the center" height="1000" width="2000" msid="95984258" hostid="261"></div><p>This is the <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-captures-dying-star-s-final-performance-in-fine-detail">Southern Ring Nebula</a>, where a dying star is slowly expelling the layers of its atmosphere in successive waves, creating ever-expanding bubbles of colorful gas. Scientists knew there were two stars at the nebula's center, but couldn't see them in Hubble's images.</p><p>The new Webb picture reveals the dying star, which glows red because it's surrounded by dust, right next to its white companion star.</p><h2>An iconic cluster of 5 galaxies is much brighter and clearer in Webb's eye</h2><div type="image" title="cluster of five galaxes stephans quintet imaged by hubble on the left and jwst on the right" height="1000" width="2000" msid="95984260" hostid="261"></div><p>Four of the galaxies in this image of <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/goddard/2022/nasa-s-webb-sheds-light-on-galaxy-evolution-black-holes">Stephan's Quintet</a> are about 300,000 light-years away, locked in a cosmic dance as each galaxy's gravity influences the others.</p><p>The Webb image also reveals new galaxies far in the background, which weren't visible to Hubble.</p><h2>Where Hubble saw a faint dot, Webb resolved 2 distinct mystery objects</h2><div type="image" title="two faint dots one yellow one orange in space" height="362" width="482" msid="95984262" hostid="261"></div><p>Dan Coe, a researcher with the Space Telescope Science Institute, first discovered this object in deep space about 10 years ago, using Hubble.</p><p>"With Hubble, it was just this pale, red dot. We could tell it was really small, just a tiny galaxy in the first 400 million years of the universe. Now we look with Webb, and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hubble-vs-webb-new-nasa-telescope-reveals-details-early-universe-2022-11">we're able to resolve TWO objects</a>," Coe said in a <a href="https://blogs.nasa.gov/webb/2022/10/26/webb-offers-never-before-seen-details-of-early-universe/" rel="">NASA release</a> in October 2022.</p><div type="image" title="gif compares hubble and jwst images of the same galaxy cluster highlighting new galaxies behind it" height="338" width="600" msid="95984263" hostid="261"></div><p>Both Hubble and Webb study the early universe through <a href="https://esahubble.org/wordbank/gravitational-lensing/#:~:text=Gravitational%20lensing%20occurs%20when%20a,accordingly%20called%20a%20gravitational%20lens.">gravitational lensing</a>. That's what happens when a cluster of distant galaxies is so massive that it warps space-time, bending the light from galaxies far in the distance behind it. That creates mirror images of those galaxies, reflected back at us.</p><p>So the imprint of the mystery objects appears in three spots in the images above. Breakouts of those three images of the system, on the right, show how much clearer Webb's images are. They clearly show two different objects.</p><p>"We're actively discussing whether these are two galaxies or two clumps of stars within a galaxy," Coe said in the release. "We don't know, but these are the questions that Webb is designed to help us answer."<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/webb-infared-early-universe-hubble-ultraviolet-insights-breathtaking-images-2022-8"></a></p><h2>Webb shows crashing galaxies in greater detail than Hubble</h2><div type="image" title="An animated gif shows picture from Hubble and James Webb space telescopes of NGC 3256" height="900" width="1200" msid="101677171" hostid="261" sizebytes="75784"></div><p>While Hubble's image of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jwst-image-shows-wreckage-of-two-galaxies-crashing-james-webb-2023-7">two colliding galaxies</a> is stunning, it doesn't capture all the chaos that you can see in Webb's clearer version. The two gas clouds crashed into each other about 500 million years ago. </p><p>Webb's powerful <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-james-webb-hidden-details-infrared-galaxies-2022-7">infrared cameras</a> picked up incredibly bright clouds made of dust and stars from the new galaxy, which is roughly 120 million light-years away. The relatively new stars "radiate enormously brightly in infrared wavelengths," ESA reported. In the Webb image, they appear bright orange and red.</p><p>Scientists hope Webb's images will help them understand what happens when two galaxies collide and provide insight into how supermassive black holes become billions of times more massive than the sun, <a href="https://www.space.com/webb-telescope-galactic-collision-image">per Space.com</a>.</p><p><em>This post has been updated with new information. The sun lies only 500 lightyears from the wave at its closest point. <br /><strong>Re-thinking how the Milky Way galaxy formed<br /></strong>The Gould Belt Survey has been observing the star-forming region using data from the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Herschel Space Observatory in hopes of finding a 3D ring of stellar nurseries.<br /><br />"Gould and Herschel both observed bright stars forming in an arc projected on the sky, so for a long time, people have been trying to figure out if these molecular clouds actually form a ring in 3D," explained <a href="https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2020/01/largest-gaseous-structure-ever-seen-in-our-galaxy-is-discovered/">Alves</a>.<br /><br />Instead, a giant wave of gas extending over 400 lightyears wide arching (CK THIS) over the Solar System was found using the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Gaia spacecraft. The phenomenon has been dubbed the ‘Radcliffe Wave’ overturning initial theories of a ring.<br /><br />

<br />"No astronomer expected that we live next to a giant, wave-like collection of gas -- or that it forms the Local Arm of the Milky Way," said Alyssa Goodman, co-author of the study.<br /><br /><strong>It talks to the Sun<br /></strong>The scientists are yet to determine what gives the Radcliffe Wave its shape, but they believe it has major repercussions for our Solar System.<br /><br />"What we do know is that our sun interacts with this structure. It passed by a festival of supernovae as it crossed Orion 13 million years ago, and in another 13 million years it will cross the structure again, sort of like we are surfing the wave," explained Alves.<br /><br />
