Her actor husband <keyword id="19914931" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Dharmendra" source="keywords">Dharmendra</keyword> has total assets of Rs 26,52,32,266 but liability of Rs 6,49,67,402 thus making his assets worth Rs 20,02,64,864. As per the affidavit, Hema Malini, 75, has no criminal cases pending against her. She has declared acting as her profession like her husband <keyword id="20792548" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dharmendra-deol" source="keywords">Dharmendra Deol</keyword>. Hema Malini presently owns total wealth, including bungalows, cars, jewellery, cash, shares and term deposits worth over Rs 141 crore, while five years ago, her total assets had been valued at around Rs 114 crore. She has disclosed acting as her profession, rent and income through interest as sources of income while acting, pension and interest are detailed as source of her husband's income. As per the affidavit, she has an honorary Ph.D from Sir Padampat Singhania University at Udaipur in 2012. She has Rs 13,52,865 cash while her husband Dharmendra Deol has Rs 43,19,016 cash in hand. Besides, a bank account in her name has Rs 99,93,177 and her husband has Rs 3,52,99,371 in his bank account. Her investments in companies, bonds, debentures, mutual funds and others are of Rs 2,57,92,886 while her husband Dharmendra has an investment of Rs 4,55,14,871. Hema Malini owns vehicles worth Rs 61,53,816 which include Mercedez Benz, AL-CAZAR, Maruti EECO etc and her husband has vehicles including Range Rover, Mahindra Bolero besides a motorbike. She has gold, silver, diamond and precious stones worth Rs 3,39,39,307 while Dharmendra owns gold worth Rs 1,07,48,200. Former Chief Election Commissioner O P <keyword id="19965032" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rawat" source="keywords">Rawat</keyword> had recently described NOTA as having a "symbolic" impact and had said if it gets more than 50 per cent votes in a seat, only then making it legally effective on poll results could be considered. Rawat had also told PTI that if 99 out of 100 votes go in favour of NOTA option and someone gets one vote, even then the canidate will emerge victorious. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Indore recorded 69 per cent turnout with 5,045 voters opting for NOTA. Rawat said, "In the present situation, NOTA has only symbolic significance and it cannot have an impact on the election result of any seat." "More than 50 per cent electors will have to once opt for NOTA in a seat to show the political community that they do not consider candidates with criminal background or other undeserving ones worthy of their votes. Only after this, pressure on Parliament and the Election Commission will increase and they will have to think about changing laws to make NOTA effective on the election results," he said.

More than half the candidates contesting the elections from some of the major parties in India have criminal cases registered against them. The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) analysed 3112 of the 3237 candidates fighting in the Maharashtra Assembly Election across all 288 constituencies.

 They found that while the incidence of crime was high, two-thirds of the overall contestants have committed serious crimes. Serious crimes a subset of criminal cases where the offence is not bailable and the minimum punishment is at least five years in jail. No one to point fingers Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has the worst of the pack with 59% its candidates having criminal records. And, 36% of them fall under the ambit of serious offences. Its ally, the Shiv Sena, projects a more dangerous image with 61% criminal candidates and 48% — which is still half of the contesting candidates — having committed serious crimes. The opposition isn’t any position to point fingers either.

 Majority of the candidates from the Indian National Congress (INC) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) — 57% and 63%, respectively — also have criminal cases registered against them. But they do have fewer candidates with serious crimes registered against them. As many as 30% of INC candidates and 35% of NCP candidates fall into the category. Overall, the incidence of candidates with a criminal history has increased by 5% — from 798 to 916 candidates between 2014 to 2019. In a significant judgement, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed political <keyword id="15047" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Parties">parties</keyword> to upload on their respective websites the details of all pending criminal cases against candidates contesting polls, citing the alarming increase in criminalisation of politics in past four general elections. A bench headed by Justice R.F. Nariman said the parties would have to clarify on reasons for selecting candidates with pending criminal cases and upload this information on their websites. The top court also observed that political parties will have to submit a compliance report within 72 hours, to the Election Commission, after selecting candidates having pending criminal cases. The order from the top court came on a contempt plea filed by Advocate Ashwini Upadhyay, raising critical issues due to increase in criminalisation of politics. The plea claimed the directions given by the apex court in its September 2018 verdict, which specified guidelines to disclosure of criminal antecedents by candidates, is not being followed in letter and spirit. The top court also directed that political parties would have to publish this information on their social media platforms like <keyword id="6354576" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> and <keyword id="6354616" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Twitter">Twitter</keyword> besides publishing this information in one local vernacular and one national newspaper. Parties must publish candidates criminal cases on sites: SC

Sixteen per cent of the <keyword id="6370132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="candidates">candidates</keyword> contesting in the first phase of Assam assembly elections have declared criminal cases against themselves, according to a report by poll rights group <keyword id="404563" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Association-for-Democratic-Reforms">Association for Democratic Reforms</keyword> (ADR). The <keyword id="602518" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Assam-Election-Watch">Assam Election Watch</keyword> and ADR have analysed the sworn affidavits of 259 out of the 264 candidates in the first phase. Out of 259 candidates analysed, 41 (16 per cent) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves and 34 (13 per cent) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves, the ADR said. The report said out of 259 candidates, 101 (39 per cent) are crorepatis. Giving educational background, the report said 97 (37 per cent) candidates have declared their educational qualifications to be between 5th and 12th standard, while 157 (61 per cent) candidates have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above. Four candidates are diploma holders and one candidate is just literate. The report said 67 (26 per cent) candidates have declared their age to be between 25 and 40 years, while 153 (59 per cent) candidates have declared their age to be between 41 and 60 years. "There are 38 (15 per cent) candidates who have declared their age to be between 61 and 70 years. One candidate has declared his age 85 years," the report said. Giving gender details of the candidates, the report said 25 (10 per cent) women candidates are contesting in the first phase. Among the major parties, 10 (23 per cent) out of 43 candidates analysed from the Congress, eight (20 per cent) out of 41 candidates analysed from the Assam Jatiya Parishad, three (8 per cent) out of 39 candidates analysed from the BJP and one candidate each from the NCP, AGP and the SUCI(C) have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits. Among the major parties, nine (21 per cent) out of 43 candidates analysed from the Congress, six (15 per cent) out of 41 candidates analysed from the Assam Jatiya Parishad, three (8 per cent) out of 39 candidates analysed from the BJP and one candidate each from the NCP, AGP and the SUCI(C) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits. Serious criminal cases are non-bailable offences with over five years of imprisonment. Five candidates have declared cases related to crime against women. "Out of five candidates, one candidate has declared cases related to rape (IPC Section-376)," the report said. Two candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section-302) against themselves and four candidates have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section-307) against themselves. "Three (6 per cent) out of 47 constituencies are Red alert constituencies. Red alert constituencies are those where three or more contesting candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves," the report said. "The directions of the Supreme Court have had no effect on the political parties in selection of candidates in Phase 1 of the Assam Assembly Elections 2021 as they have again followed their old practice of giving tickets to around 16 per cent candidates with criminal cases," the report said. Giving financial background of the candidates, the report said among the major parties nine (90 per cent) out of 10 candidates analysed from the AGP, 31(72 per cent) out of 43 candidates analysed from the Congress, 28 (72 per cent) out of 39 candidates analysed from the BJP and 15 (37 per cent) out of 41 candidates analysed from the Assam Jatiya Parishad have declared assets valued more than ₹1 crore. "The average of assets per candidate contesting in the Assam Assembly Elections 2021 Phase I is ₹1.84 crore," the report said. Elections to the 126-member Assam assembly will be held in three phases on March 27, April 1 and April 6. Around 16% candidates contesting in Phase-1 of Assam assembly polls have criminal backgrounds, says an NGO report

<ul><li>Candidates with criminal records contesting the <keyword id="2458524" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Haryana-assembly-election">Haryana Assembly Election</keyword> has increased from 94 to 117 individuals between 2014 to 2019. </li><li>Five candidates are accused of crimes against women and another five are accused of attempted murder.</li><li>Sirsa and Rohtak (Mehem constituency) have the highest number of candidates with criminal records.</li></ul>It’s been five years since Haryana’s last Assembly Election and the number of candidates with criminal cases registered against them has only increased. In 2014, only 7% of the candidates had criminal cases declared against them. Come 2019, it has increased to 10%, according to a report by the Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR). This is an increase of 53 from 94 candidates during the last election to 117 in the upcoming election.

 Even when it comes to serious criminal cases the percentage of candidates has increased from 5% in 2014 to 6% in 2019. These are crimes, which are not bailable and can result in at least five years of jail. Specifically, five candidates are accused of crimes against women — including two candidates who were accused of rape. Another five are accused of attempted murder. Criminals and their offences Amongst the national parties contending the elections, Indian National Congress (INC) leads the pack with the 13 candidates with criminal cases. This makes up for 15% of the party’s candidates who will be eligible on the polls.

 INC is followed by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), which has 12 candidates with criminal cases registered against them. But, BSP comes in ahead of INC when looking at serious criminal cases with 9 candidates. Tayub Husain of the BSP is one such candidate accused of rape, kidnapping, criminal intimidation and rioting. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on the other hand, only has three candidates with a criminal record — one with a serious criminal case registered against them. BJP’s criminal count is the lowest amongst the national political parties. Overall, 11 of the 117 candidates with criminal accusations have even convicted of the crimes registered against them. ‘Red Alert’ constituencies According to ADR’s report, 15 out of 90 constituencies where elections will take place are ‘Red Alert’ constituencies. These constituencies have at least three or more contesting candidates with criminal cases registered against them. Sirsa and Rohtak — in the Mehem constituency — have the highest number of <keyword id="884815" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="criminal-candidates">criminal candidates</keyword> with 18 aspirants. Gurgaon and Charkhi Dadri constituencies are on their coat tails with 16 candidates accused of crime.
