Over 1.60 lakh birds of five <keyword id="368756" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Poultry">poultry</keyword> farms in <keyword id="41646" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Haryana">Haryana</keyword>'s <keyword id="48534" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="panchkula">Panchkula</keyword> district are set to be culled as some poultry samples there have tested positive for the <keyword id="3777227" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="avian-flu">avian flu</keyword>, Agriculture minister J P Dalal said on Friday. "Five poultry samples of Siddharth Poultry Farm at Raipur Rani block in Panchkula were found positive for the H5N8 strain of avian flu. It is an influenza virus," Dalal said while talking to reporters here. Similarly, the samples of some birds from Nature Poultry farm at Panchkula too tested positive, he said. The samples were sent to a laboratory in Bhopal and their reports have come now, the minister added. As per the government of India guidelines, the poultry of farms located within one km of any farm fund having infected birds have to be culled, Dalal said. Accordingly, as per estimates, around 1.66 lakh poultry birds of five poultry farms in Panchkala will have to be culled, the minister added. The employees of these poultry farms too would be examined by the health department, Dalal further said. They would also be given anti-viral medicines, he further said. Notably, over four lakh poultry birds had died at some farms in Haryana's Panchkula district over the past several days. Panchkula's Barwala-Raipur Rani area is one of the largest poultry belts in the country with 70-80 lakh birds in more than 100 farms. <keyword id="6360078" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="chandigarh">Chandigarh</keyword>, After the death of over 4 lakh birds in Asia's biggest polutary belt in Haryana's Panchkula district in past 10 days, the state Animal Husbandry and <keyword id="531480" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="dairying-department">Dairying Department</keyword> on Tuesday said there are no confirmed reports of avian influenza for their death. An official spokesperson said samples were collected and sent to <keyword id="1307352" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Regional-Disease-Diagnostic-Laboratory">Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory</keyword> in Jalandhar from where the report is still awaited. A team from the laboratory has reached the Barwala area for re-sampling of birds. Among the suspected diseases can also be Ranikhet or infectious laryngeo-trachitis. The spokesperson said there are 77,87,450 birds in poultry farms in the Panchkula district and the mortality of birds was 409,970. He said even though the mortality in poultry was higher as compared to the previous months, to date no evidence indicated that any person got infected following the consumption of poultry or poultry products.

Shimla, With the toll of migratory waterbirds rising to over 1,800, and almost half of them being endangered bar-headed goose visiting the Pong wetlands, the Himachal Pradesh wildlife authorities on Monday suspected avian influenza as the cause. Chief Conservator Wildlife of Pong wetlands -- one of the largest in northern India, Upasna Patyal, told the reason for the deaths is still a mystery. Their carcasses have been sent to different laboratories to determine the cause of death. "The death of birds could be attributed to bird flu. We are expecting to get results by Tuesday evening. As a protocol, we have imposed prohibitory orders," she said. The local administration has already sounded an alert by banning all the human activities within 10-km radius of the Pong wetlands in Kangra district. The bird flu can spread to human beings and turn fatal. Besides the bar-headed goose, the other species were the shoveler, the river tern, the black-headed gull and the common teal. Some birds -- including the bar-headed goose -- were seen acting strangely before their deaths, she said. "When you're seeing that birds are not able to take the flight despite healthy wings, it's really disturbing. At some distance, you find their carcasses," she said. According to the Bird Count India, a partnership comprising organizations and groups, over the past seven-10 days there have been reports of wild birds dying in separate incidents at different locations in the country. That wild birds die is not necessarily worrying. But it is possible that some of these recent deaths are out of the ordinary, with large numbers dying or reports of diagnoses of H5N1 (avian influenza). At the moment, no-one knows whether these are causes of larger concern, but it is worth keeping an eye on the situation, it said. "If you encounter a wild bird that is dead or dying, do not approach it, and under any circumstances do not touch it given the possibility (however small) that it might be infected with avian influenza. H5N1 is a highly contagious virus that can cause severe illness in people," it warned. Sensing gravity of the situation, Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) scientist K.S. Gopi Sundar told that it's something an alarming situation. "We are getting reports of death of birds in nature across India. It's likely to be a disease because the deaths are occurring in multiple locations involving multiple species. It is a dangerous situation and needs multi-stakeholder intervention on priority," he said. At the Pong wetlands, preliminary findings of their post mortem have ruled out poisoning as the cause of their death, wildlife officials said. Bird flu scare reaches Himachal Pradesh as 1,800 migratory birds drop dead

New Delhi, Bird flu has been confirmed in seven states of the country so far, namely Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh, while test reports of unsual death of birds received from Chhattisgarh, <keyword id="13126" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Maharashtra">Maharashtra</keyword> and Delhi are awaited, the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and <keyword id="4161976" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="dairying">Dairying</keyword> said on Saturday. As per a statement issued by the ministry, after confirmation of avian influenza (AI) positive samples by the ICAR-NIHSAD from two poultry farms in Panchkula district in Haryana, positive cases of bird flu in migratory birds were reported in Shivpuri, Rajgarh, Shajapur, Agar and Vidisha district in Madhya Pradesh, the zoological park in Kanpur, and Pratapgarh and Dausa districts of Rajasthan. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAH&amp;D) has issued an advisory to the affected states so as to avoid further spread of the disease. Reports of unusual mortality of birds in the past two days have also been received from Balod district in Chhattisgarh. The state has constituted RRT teams for emergency situation and has also sent the samples for testing to the designated laboratory. Further, reports of unusual mortality in ducks have been received from Sanjay Lake in Delhi. The samples have been sent to the designated laboratory for testing. Samples of dead crows have also been sent to <keyword id="2734927" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIHSAD">NIHSAD</keyword> from Mumbai, Thane, Dapoli, Parbhani, and <keyword id="101668" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Beed">Beed</keyword> districts of Maharashtra for confirmation of AI. Meanwhile, culling operations have been completed in both the affected districts of Kerala and post-operational surveillance program guidelines have been issued to the state. Choudhary, principal secretary, agriculture and animal husbandry department, said, "In the wake of spread of bird flu in neighbouring states of J&amp;K as a measure of abundant precaution and in view of the declaration of whole J&amp;K as 'controlled area' for bird flu disease, government of UT of J&amp;K imposes complete ban on import of live birds, including poultry and unprocessed poultry meat for any purpose into the union territory of J&amp;K with immediate effect till 14-01-2021." Authorities have already said that so far there was no reported incident of bird death due to bird flu in the union territory. Meanwhile, there are reports of scores of crows dying in Rajouri district. The authorities said they have collected samples to ascertain whether these deaths are related to bird flu or not. Another red herring in this regard is that J&amp;K plays host to thousands of migratory birds each winter and the spread of bird flu is primarily attributed to these migratory birds. Bhuvnesh Kumar, principal secretary (animal husbandry), said: "So far, the infection has not been noticed in Uttar Pradesh but we have increased vigil and asked officials to be on high alert so that we do not allow the virus to spread, as and when it is reported in the state. The directorate has already sent a letter to all chief veterinary officers to remain alert to the threat while another letter with further directions will be sent by agriculture production commissioner <keyword id="4410720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alok-Sinha">Alok Sinha</keyword>." Kumar said that directions have been issued to implement controlling measures as soon as even one case of bird flu is reported, which implies culling. He said that it was imperative to avoid the spread of the virus to humans, which would complicate the already sensitive Covid-19 situation. "We will maintain strict watch over all water bodies where migratory birds are coming. The flu has been noticed in migratory birds and not poultry. However, to ensure that all bases are covered, we are taking special care to monitor poultry farms as well. The department collects samples from birds on a regular basis to check for any kind of disease but now we will intensify the checking," Kumar said. He added that there should be no panic about consumption of poultry as the government was taking all necessary precautions. However, it is "absolutely safe" to consume eggs or chicken as the virus cannot withstand cooking temperatures, and people need not worry as infection to humans due to <keyword id="95867" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bird-flu">bird flu</keyword> is "rarest of rare", state animal husbandry department secretary Anoop Kumar told . The official also said they would be increasing bio-safety measures in poultry farms so that there is no interface with wild birds. In the morning, Parbhani Collector Deepak Muglikar told that bird flu has been confirmed as the cause of death of around 900 hens at a poultry farm in Murumba village and the district administration has decided to cull nearly 8,000 birds in the village. Kumar said the animal husbandry department has already started implementing its action plan and the culling of birds will begin from Tuesday. He said 8,000 to 10,000 birds within one-km radius of the infected zone in Parbhani may be culled. According to the Bhopal-based ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), two crows from Mumbai died due to bird flu. Three pond egrets and a parrot from Thane were infected by the H5N1 avian influenza virus, the institute's test report said. Besides, a chicken and two herons from Parbhani too died of H5N1 avian influenza virus, while crows from Beed and Dapoli (in Ratnagiri district) were infected by H5N8 avian influenza virus, as per the report. "Our action plan implementation work has begun. We will be holding a review meeting with the chief minister (Uddhav Thackeray) in the evening," Kumar said. "We will get our strategies approved by the CM and start culling from tomorrow, especially in Parbhani where poultry birds have been found to be infected," he said. The government machinery, including district collectors and forest department, is on alert, he said. Kumar also said that people need not worry as infection to humans due to bird flu is "rarest of rare". The state government is also running a campaign to make people aware that it is safe to consume eggs and poultry products, because there is "absolutely no possibility" of infection due to eating them. "And our cooking temperature takes care of any kind of virus, not only flu virus...it is absolutely safe to eat eggs and chicken," he said. Talking to reporters in Jalna, state Health Minister Rajesh Tope said his department is on alert in view of the bird flu cases found in the state. However, there is nothing to fear, he said and asked people to take care and be safe. Earlier, Parbhani Collector Muglikar said they have created a prohibitory zone in 10 km radius of the area where the birds died. "No birds will be transported from there to any other place. Our medical team is stationed there and it is examining all people of the village," he said. There is no need to be panic and the district administration is taking all precautions, he added. Maharashtra confirms bird flu cases in Parbhani, Mumbai, Thane, Beed and Dapoli

New Delhi, After the coronavirus pandemic wreaked havoc on the country's <keyword id="667218" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="poultry-industry">poultry industry</keyword>, it is now reeling under the fresh threat of the bird flu infection. Due to the fear of bird flu, the <keyword id="6371194" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sale">sale</keyword> of chicken and chicken products have been the worst-hit. Especially in north India, the poultry industry has been badly affected by ban on the transportation of hens from one state to another. A delegation from the industry is scheduled to meet the central government on Sunday. The cases of bird flu in <keyword id="7494630" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="poultry-chickens">poultry chickens</keyword> have so far been found only in Haryana while most of them have been found in wild birds or migratory birds elsewhere and some cases have also been found in poultry ducks. Poultry Federation of India President, Ramesh Khatri, told that chicken sales had fallen by almost 70 to 80% over the last three to four days, while prices had fallen by 50% and egg prices had also come down by nearly 15 to 20%. Poultry farm operator, Rakesh Manhas, also said he would urge the Central government that the rumours spread about bird flu causes humongous loss to the industry so measures should be taken to prevent such a situation. The Union Animal Husbandry Ministry also said in the seven states where there were confirmed cases of bird flu on Saturday, only the reports of bird flu in poultry-chickens in Haryana has been confirmed. This means the business of the poultry industry which was nearly ₹1.25 lakh crore before the disaster of coronavirus has reduced to nearly ₹60,000 to 70,000 crore at present.
