<ul><li>Alibaba’s CEO calmly played down the risks of trade war between China and US </li><li>China wants its consumers to spend more as global demand for the country’s good wanes </li><li>Any stimulus to boost consumption in China will benefit Alibaba first </li></ul>The entire world is stressing about the unfolding trade war between China and US. But one man, Daniel Zhang -- the chief executive officer of online retailing giant Alibaba -- seemed rather unfazed by the clashing of the world’s two largest economies. “Trade war is only one matter,” an impassive Zhang told delegates at the World Economic Forum, adding that a country of over a billion consumers is a ‘self-sufficient’ market. In other words, China can reduce the reliance on Donald Trump’s US if it can get its consumers richer, more excited and prod them to splurge. “If there is purchasing power in China, then US and Europe don’t matter,” Zhang said on January 24. The $450 billion Alibaba enjoys a near monopoly in China’s online retail and any improvement in consumption will benefit the company first, before it trickles down to other parts of the economy. China had tried capital investments funded by debt in the aftermath of the global financial crisis a decade. It mined more coal but there were no takers, built new mills that made steel but couldn’t sell it, and developed properties that became ghost towns where only a few people lived. The fall in prices from excess capacity and production kept a lid on overall economic growth, and on the other hand, debt kept piling up as the government spent more money to revive the economy every time it slowed down. Now, China is taking a different approach -- consumers. And that bodes well for Alibaba. What's more, China is reportedly set to <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/china-set-to-eclipse-us-as-worlds-largest-retail-market/" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">overtake</a> America as the world's largest retail market in 2019. The stakes are high in China, if the consumers are willing to spend. Open sesame China has strategically blocked foreign sites like Google and Facebook <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/06/technology/china-generation-blocked-internet.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">over the last decade</a> and the crackdown isn't complete yet. On January 24, a Microsoft spokesperson <a href="https://gizmodo.com/china-may-have-blocked-microsofts-bing-in-latest-censor-1832007880" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">told</a> Gizmodo in a statement by email that it has “confirmed that Bing is currently inaccessible in China and [is] engaged to determine next steps.” Instead, the Chinese government made space for a bunch of home-grown technology companies that have thrived in the absence of foreign competition. Alibaba, for instance, has grown by leaps and bounds in China -- and its market value in US jumped more than twice to nearly $400 billion -- in the last four years. On the other hand, American counterpart Amazon whose stock is worth $800 billion today, has a measly 2% share in China's booming online retail market. Now, the lines between the state and private enterprise have increasingly blurred in China. In November 2018, Alibaba’s founder Jack Ma sold all his stake in the company and joined the Communist Party of China. “We’re seeing an increasingly close relationship between China’s leading internet companies and government because government sees them as one of the most effective ways to realise its policy initiatives,” Mark Natkin managing director of Beijing-based Marbridge Consulting <a href="http://fortune.com/2018/11/27/jack-ma-china-communist-party/">told</a> the Fortune last year. The benevolent enabler is now seeking his pound of flesh. “Communist Party committees have been installed at many tech firms, reviewing everything from operations to compliance with national goals. Regulators have been discussing taking a 1% stake in some giants, including Alibaba and Tencent, along with a board seat,” Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2018-04-12/china-is-nationalizing-its-tech-sector">reported</a> in April 2018. In the case of Alibaba, the company seems to share a common interest with President Xi Jinping, now more than ever before. The economy just clocked its <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2019/01/21/china-2018-gdp-china-reports-economic-growth-for-fourth-quarter-year.html">slowest quarterly growth</a> since 1990. The country’s stock markets had their <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/31/china-markets-2018-performance-was-worst-in-a-decade.htmlhttps://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/31/china-markets-2018-performance-was-worst-in-a-decade.html">worst year</a> in a decade in 2018. And property prices are crashing. As the world braces for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/The-worlds-CEOs-are-getting-increasingly-nervous-about-the-state-of-the-global-economy-a-major-new-survey-shows/articleshow/67639644.cms">slower 2019</a>, all hopes of the Chinese establishment are pinned on the people of the country loosening their purse strings. Chen's performance, the comment continued, was "totally devoid of aesthetic beauty." Commenters also expressed their outrage at Chen snagging the gold medal over two-time Olympic champ Hanyu, <a href="https://m.weibo.cn/status/4735332191311566?">mocking him</a> and calling him <a href="https://m.weibo.cn/status/4735665844258110?">far less visually appealing and skilled</a> in comparison to his Japanese competitor. According to reporting from <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2022/02/11/china/eileen-gu-zhu-yi-nathan-chen-comparison-intl-hnk-dst/index.html">CNN</a>, some social media posters <a href="https://m.weibo.cn/status/4735370954803184?">called Chen a national traitor</a>, taking issue with the US skater's <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/olympics-2022-usa-usopc-idCNL1N2RG00H">comments in October</a> on China's human rights abuses of the Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang. In particular, China's commenters criticized South Korea's speed skating team, accusing their rivals of cheating. Weibo users <a href="https://weibo.com/3775056661/LfqiNtuQB?refer_flag=1001030103_">alleged</a> that the South Korean team were "serial cheaters" and <a href="https://s.weibo.com/weibo?q=%23%E9%9F%A9%E5%9B%BD%E9%80%89%E6%89%8B%E6%8B%92%E7%BB%9D%E9%87%87%E8%AE%BF%E7%9B%B4%E6%8E%A5%E7%A6%BB%E5%9C%BA%23">slammed them for a viral video</a> in which some team members <a href="https://weibo.com/7129747412/LfjVKoTlO?refer_flag=1001030103_">appeared to ignore members of the Chinese press after competing</a>. Among the South Korean speed skaters, short-tracker Hwang Dae Heon was the target of the bulk of the hate comments. This <a href="https://s.weibo.com/weibo?q=%23%E9%BB%84%E5%A4%A7%E5%AE%AA%E7%8A%AF%E8%A7%84%23">stemmed from a move he made on the ice</a>, where <a href="https://m.weibo.cn/status/4736504813064464?">one of his skates appeared to move close to the face of his Chinese competitor, Wu Dajing</a>."What an extremely vicious character, forcing our Wu Dajing to slow down to not get cut," read <a href="https://m.weibo.cn/status/4737236170704381?">one comment</a> liked around 640 times. "Expel this skater for his dirty tricks!" Hwang later <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/chinese-ambassador-congratulates-korean-skater-on-gold-medal-11021405">won South Korea's first gold medal of the Beijing Games</a> when his <a href="https://www.insider.com/ren-ziwei-disqualified-days-after-accusations-pro-china-judging-bias-2022-2">Chinese rival, Ren Ziwei, was penalized for an arm block in the 1,500-meter short track event.</a> His win over Ren made things worse on Weibo, with some viral comments <a href="https://m.weibo.cn/status/4736725349568242?">calling for Hwang to be physically assaulted and banned from the sport</a>, while others <a href="https://m.weibo.cn/status/4736534923712671?">compared his posture while skating to that of a dog</a>. Another speed skater from the South Korean team, Cha Min-kyu, was also <a href="https://www.globaltimes.cn/page/202202/1252088.shtml">criticized for appearing to wipe the podium</a> before stepping on it during his silver medal ceremony for the men's 500-meter event. Some commenters <a href="https://weibo.com/6612952436/LfjcPn2HK?refer_flag=1001030103_">accused Cha </a>of insulting China, while others <a href="https://weibo.com/1223011103/Lfs7fl2ck?refer_flag=1001030103_">accused him of being immoral</a>.

Chinese investors, finding the US business environment uninviting, are turning to venture capital to skirt heightened scrutiny, while some have pivoted to other parts of the world altogether. Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) into the US plummeted for the second straight year in 2018, tumbling 83 per cent to US$5 billion, according to a Wednesday report by the National Committee on US China Relations. A year earlier, FDI amounted to US$29 billion, down from the peak of US$46 billion achieved in 2016. The latest figure represented the lowest level of direct investment by China since 2011. In 2018, Chinese investors sold US$13 billion worth of US assets. Including those sales, direct investment in the US came to negative US$8 billion. The Trump administration has recently toughened its oversight of Chinese investment in the wake of a splurge of Chinese acquisitions, particularly in US technology, viewed as a national security threat. Chinese investors, as a result, are shifting into venture capital to avoid the stepped-up surveillance. Last year, venture capital investments from China to the US, an area that has existed for only about five years, increased to a record US$3.6 billion, mainly on automotive industry investment. Chinese venture capital had remained largely untouched by US regulators up to November 2018, allowing deal activity to continue somewhat strongly in semiconductors amid sharp drops in direct investment, the report said. Other investors from China pulled out of the US completely and shifted their focus to other parts of the world. Consequently, Chinese investment in emerging and frontier markets in Asia nearly tripled last year, surging 198 per cent from the year-earlier period, according to <keyword id="50190" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asian-Development-Bank">Asian Development Bank</keyword>. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/comment/insight-opinion/united-states/article/2174078/foreign-investors-have-taken-note-chinas">Amid the gloom, a bright spot in US-China trade talks should not be ignored</a> Looking forward, "Chinese firms' commercial appetite for investing abroad remain strong," researchers wrote in the report. "However, policy hurdles in both the US and China remain significant headwinds." The overall decline in FDI continued for a second year as the US-China relationship grew increasingly hostile with US President Donald Trump's levying of punitive tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of Chinese goods nearly a year ago, launching the trade war. Since then, US trade negotiators have been pressuring China to implement structural changes to level the playing field for foreign companies doing business in China. The requested reforms would include halting the subsidising of large state-owned businesses and cracking down on intellectual property theft. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/economy/china-economy/article/2169209/chinas-september-fdi-figure-rises-foreign-investor-shrug-aside">China's September FDI figure rises as investors ignore trade war woes</a> The US negotiating team also wants to end the practice of forcing foreign companies to transfer proprietary technology to Chinese joint venture partners. Disagreements over the implementation of some of these remedies have become a stumbling block in both sides' efforts to forge a deal that would end a tariff war that has hurt both China's economy and the global economy. Trump's unpredictable behaviour and decision-making process, however, have thrown a wrench into efforts to steer the trade battle to a conclusion. In an abrupt turn, Trump tweeted this weekend that he planned to boost tariffs on US$200 billion of Chinese goods to 25 per cent from 10 per cent on Friday. Accusing China of reneging on already negotiated deal terms, the US leader dealt a setback to those hoping for an imminent end to the trade war. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/comment/insight-opinion/hong-kong/article/2150910/fdi-earthquake-you-probably-missed-and-what-it">The FDI earthquake you missed, and what it signals for global trade</a> After a splurge of acquisitions in the US, Beijing moved to control the flow of outbound capital, causing a drop in direct Chinese investment in the US. The government prohibited Chinese investors from acquiring assets in real estate, hospitality and other sectors. In the past year, major Chinese companies that had led the acquisition binge in 2015 and 2016 have sold assets worth billions of US dollars to bring capital back to China to boost domestic growth. In March, Premier Li Keqiang said in his government work report that Beijing would set a lower economic growth target for this year of 6 to 6.5 per cent, down from the target of "about 6.5 per cent" set for last year. <a href="https://www.scmp.com/week-asia/opinion/article/2108351/heres-why-incoming-fdi-far-more-important-china-thought">Why incoming FDI is more important to China than thought</a> It also said it would step up fiscal measures to stabilise growth, after factoring in headwinds, including the trade war, an already high debt level and financing bottlenecks for private enterprises. Anbang, a holding company that started out in the insurance business and has expanded into banking and financial services announced the sale of its US luxury hotel portfolio, valued at about US$10 billion. That's according to comments from Julia Steyn, Maven's vice president of mobility, in a recent <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/gm-maven-car-sharing-millennials-2017-8">interview</a> with Business Insider. The service is still very young, with only around 75,000 users in 17 North American cities. However, GM hopes to expand the service to become its answer to the major disruption in car ownership rates that is anticipated in the coming decades with the advent of autonomous vehicles.That disruption in car ownership is already beginning in urban areas, with car sales declining in major cities, according to Steyn. That is being driven by accelerating urbanization, particularly among younger <a href="http://www.npr.org/2014/10/21/357723069/millennials-continue-urbanization-of-america-leaving-small-towns">generations</a>, and the advent of on-demand rides provided by services like Uber and Lyft.<ul><li>A Reuters <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos-rideservices-poll-idUSKBN18L1DA">survey</a> released earlier this year found that 9% of the 584 US respondents who had sold their car in the previous year had not replaced their vehicle with a new one, and instead used ride-hailing services as their primary means of transportation.</li><li>Additionally, 9% of 566 US respondents who planned to get rid of their car in the year said they will use ride-hailing services instead of buying a new car.</li></ul>Even though more people are choosing on-demand ride services over buying a new car, it will take a long time for declining car ownership to really hit the auto industry. That's because the average length of car ownership has been increasing - it hit a record of 6.6 years at the end of 2015, <a href="http://news.ihsmarkit.com/press-release/automotive/vehicles-getting-older-average-age-light-cars-and-trucks-us-rises-again-201">according to</a> research firm IHS Markit. That means that about 15% of the car-owning population is trading in a car each year. If only 9% of those are choosing ride-hailing over buying a new car, as Reuters survey suggests, then about 1% of the population has ditched their cars for ride-hailing in the past year. That longer car ownership rate is being driven by higher-quality vehicles that last longer. Since consumers are holding on to their cars longer, it would be long even by optimistic projections for on-demand mobility services to become the chief transportation mode in the US.Automakers, including GM, are responding to this early trend by exploring services centered around car-sharing, ride-hailing, and delivery. However, that is leading to increasing competition in these areas. At this stage, Maven still has far less users than Daimler's and BMW's older Car2Go and DriveNow car-sharing services, which boast 2.7 million and 1 million, respectively. And all of these car-sharing services are dwarfed by the largest ride-hailing services, including Uber, Lyft, and China's Didi Chuxing. That will also lead to radical changes in the exterior design of the car. Amazon has turned fast and free shipping into a competitive advantage, and other retailers, suppliers, and logistics companies are moving quickly to catch up.Asset tracking software platforms can help these companies improve delivery times by providing real-time location data about shipments, and alerting companies to possible delays caused by weather or traffic. That has led to increased interest and funding in companies offering these platforms:<ul><li>Convey, a startup that specializes in tracking last-mile deliveries, closed $8.25 million in Series B funding this week led by Techstars Venture Capital Fund. Convey's software is used by Walmart's Jet.com, and the company plans to use the funding to build out its offerings for international supply chains. </li><li>Earlier this month, supply chain software firm Descartes Systems Group acquired MacroPoint LLC, which provides a platform for tracking long haul and medium haul trucking shipments. This will help Descartes build out its tracking software portfolio, which already offered solutions for tracking air and ocean freight.</li><li>Target also <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/auto-suppliers-bearish-on-electric-cars-robot-swarms-in-warehouses-target-looks-to-speed-up-deliveries-2017-8">acquired</a> Grand Junction, which provides a platform for tracking and managing last-mile deliveries, earlier this month to expand a same-day delivery test it had been running in New York City to other markets.</li></ul>The retail industry shifts towards same-day and time-window (within one or two hours) deliveries will only increase retailers' focus on tracking goods and tightening their supply chains. For example, Walmart <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-07-12/fined-for-arriving-early-wal-mart-puts-its-suppliers-on-notice">introduced</a> new penalties last month on suppliers that failed to deliver goods on time. This trend will make real-time visibility into shipments a competitive advantage for retailers' suppliers and logistics partners, increasing adoption of technologies that can provide such visibility.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table click-to-enlarge"><div><div class="image on-image"><a title_source="BI Intelligence" title_caption="" class="zoomin" href="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/59a5ca1f79bbfd0d288b61ba-960/technologies for digital transformation-2.jpg"></a>BI Intelligence</div></div></div>In other news...<ul><li>China-based DJI, the world's largest drone manufacturer, <a href="https://www.engadget.com/2017/08/28/dji-pulls-drone-app-plugins/">overhauled</a> its data security and privacy practices after it discovered a third-party developer was collecting customers' private information. The data privacy issue arose from a third-party extension, called JPush, to DJI apps that provided app notifications to users when their drone footage was successfully uploaded to DJI's SkyPixel sharing service. DJI discovered that the extension was collecting unnecessary user information, including what other apps users had installed on their phones, without any disclosure. DJI said that it has now blocked the extension, and is reviewing other plugins for its apps for any similar data collection problems. It also started a bug bounty <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/28/dji-launches-bug-bounty-program-for-its-software-and-drones/">program</a> that offers between $100 to $30,000 for the discovery of any bugs in the company's software. DJI clearly hopes these moves will help demonstrate that it's serious about protecting customers' information to help defend its leading position in both the consumer and commercial drone markets.</li><li>Skydio, a three-year-old drone manufacturing startup, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/skydio-raising-roughly-40-million-series-b-to-make-ai-powered-autonomous-drone-2017-8">raised</a> $40 million in Series B funding. The company aims to build a technologically advanced drone that can fly itself with the help of artificial intelligence (AI), but has yet to unveil its first model. Its early prototypes leverage cameras and computer vision technology to avoid obstacles and track their environment. The drone manufacturing market is dominated by DJI, which <a href="https://www.recode.net/2017/4/14/14690576/drone-market-share-growth-charts-dji-forecast">controls</a> 50% of the entire North American drone market. DJI's scale has allowed it to slash prices and invest heavily in research and development, which has helped it keep competitors at bay. However, drones remain a niche product right now, and drones that are easier to fly thanks to better autonomous capabilities could open up the market to new consumers. </li><li>Toyota and Mazda are working together to develop a Linux-based connected car <a href="https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/08/29/mazda_toyota_linux_entune_car_infotainment/">platform</a>, dubbed Entune, that could provide navigation and infotainment apps. Entune's core apps include Bing search, Pandora, iHeartRado, and restaurant booking service OpenTable, as well as Toyota's own app for news and weather updates. Toyota and Mazda reportedly decided to team up on this effort because of a lack of software developers in Japan focused on connected car services. The platform will eventually come to the US in Toyota's 2018 Camry, and will then compete with Google's Android Auto and Apple's CarPlay connected car platforms.
