Attributing the party's victory in Bihar and in various assembly bypolls to the people's faith in <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-narendra-modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>, the BJP leaders on Tuesday said the voters of Bihar have rejected dynasty, casteism and politics of appeasement. The party leaders and ministers also credited the victory in Bihar to the Modi government's success in navigating the country during the COVID-19 crisis. Describing the BJP's victory as the reimposition of faith in the Modi government's pro-poor policies, the party president J P Nadda said the entire nation has reposed its trust in the welfare work done by the Centre, as shown by results of the Bihar assembly elections and of by-elections in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Manipur and Telangana. "In the difficult times of the COVID-19 epidemic, when the country was struggling with crisis and challenges, Modi government took all possible steps to help the poor and the needy and provided them free ration and financial assistance as well. It was a unique example of serving the humanity," Nadda said in series of tweets. Union Home Minister <keyword id="6355521" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="amit-shah">Amit Shah</keyword> on Tuesday complimented the people of Bihar for electing the NDA in the just concluded assembly elections, saying the people of the state have chosen development over "hollow politics, casteism and appeasement". In a series of tweets in Hindi, Shah also said that the victory of the NDA was the win of the "double engine" development of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. "Every section of Bihar has once again chosen the development of NDA by denying hollow politics, casteism and appeasement politics. I thank all the brothers and sisters of the state from the core of my heart for re-choosing development, progress and good governance. I especially thank the youth and women who formed the NDA government with absolute majority by choosing security and a bright future in Bihar," he said. Another senior party leader and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said the victory in Bihar is a win of the NDA's commitment to good governance and development and expressed his gratitude to the people of the state. BJP declares victory in Bihar Election 2020 before final count with Prime Minister Modi, Amit Shah and other senior leaders thanking voters

Ahead of the <keyword id="437961" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar-legislative-assembly">Bihar Legislative Assembly</keyword> polls, the state has turned into a political warzone. Political analysts are having a field day, predicting the trends and possible alliances that would come by in the state. One year since the <keyword id="58687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bharatiya-Janata-Party">Bharatiya Janata Party</keyword> (<keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>) formed its NDA government, Bihar will serve as an important indicator for what is to come by as an imminent reaction to <keyword id="6354814" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="prime-minister-Narendra-Modi">Prime Minister Narendra Modi</keyword>’s government in the country. For starters, the most important indicator that has emerged is the fact that the BJP will have to wage a different sort of war in this state. The <keyword id="460702" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Janata-Parivar">Janata Parivar</keyword> merger will prove to be a tough nut for the masterminds who engineered the 2014 general elections victory. BJP still hasn’t lost the plot. After all, Amit Shah now has 11 strong candidates from the NDA to choose. But, that isn’t going to be easy after the face-smacking debacle that the BJP suffered in Delhi elections. The <keyword id="6354944" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aam-Aadmi-Party">Aam Aadmi Party</keyword> (AAP) has all plans to become a national party sooner than later. But, with Bihar, AAP would not like to test the choppy waters. 

	The regional parties, which saw being badly decimated and reduced to rubble in last year’s general elections, have come together; much to the discomfort of NDA. This would mean a tougher path ahead. Whether the alliance of Janata Parivar will make sense to people or not, is never the question. It is all about who has better reach and communication mechanism with the voters; and who can influence the voters to choose them over the others. The elections come at a time when the BJP’s popularity is seen declining in most crucial quarters. The large gap between promises and performance is seen as the most important reason for this. Though there was political unrest in Bihar in the recent times; there has also been an increasing anger among farmers about the least support they have got from the central government.
 The hurried return of <keyword id="6358190" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword> after unseating Jiten Ram Manjhi is bound to have its repercussions on the current results. Nitish suffered a humiliating defeat in the last polls despite having delivered on ‘progress’. This was seen as voters’ reaction to his snapping of ties with his longstanding association with the BJP. 

	With the 2010 elections, political analysts had concluded that the heavily-castetist Bihar is finally moving away from being a society that voted a particular caste to power, and not for better standard of lives. The BJP-JD(U) alliance was some sort of a rainbow of hope for the state that had somewhat tread the path of scams during the time of Lalu Prasad Yadav.
 

	JD(U) – BJP had won 206 seats out of 243 total seats. Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) alliance was reduced to nothing with a loss of face, facing complete rejection at 25 seats only. But this was in 2010, even before the rest of India had begun to even speak the language of development. Did caste get a boot in these elections? Did Bihar show the tendency right then? The victory in this election is crucial for the Centre for various reasons. It will provide some kind of reassurance to the central government to keep the tempo up about Modi magic still being alive. Else, a lot of things can change at the Centre.
 

	The BJP desperately needs this victory to up its numbers in Rajya Sabha where its developmental agenda alone is not cutting the ice. Since the party has no big numbers, its bills are taking the ordinance route and this can be perceived as a serious setback for the BJP’s assurance to keep up the values of democracy.
 

	Bihar polls would also ensure the atmosphere is set for the UP polls that are due to take place in 2017. Would this mean the greatest political indicator of our times has already been perceived political analysts? The vital signs are all over the place to affirm this indicator.
 

	What’s with the Janata Parivar merger? Though secular forces all over the country desire the coming together of secular forces, the NDA victory of 2014 bagging 31 out of 40 seats actually acted like a glue for Lalu and Nitish to come together. An unholy alliance, as it may be termed, the coming together of two contradictory and different forces should be tested against time depending on whether the voter places trust in them or not. Bihar, right now, is a cauldron. Only, we will know what's cooking in a few months.

Bihar is going to tip India’s political scale

A lacklustre show by the Congress in Bihar seems to have proved costly for the opposition grand alliance, as it dragged down the RJD too from the government formation in the Hindi heartland state. While the Congress lost ground in Bihar, it also suffered significant electoral losses in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat, losing a majority of bypolls in key states that saw the BJP surging ahead. <div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="79142084" title="Bihar Election Results 2020: With 40 seats still hanging in the balance, NDA widens its lead but RJD continues to be the single largest party" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div> The Congress also alleged foul play in elections accusing the ruling NDA of misuse of power. The Congress also went to the EC making the allegations that their candidates were not given certificates of victory despite winning. "Democracy is being murdered and mandate being abducted in Bihar," Surjewala tweeted in Hindi citing examples of seats where their party candidate had won but not given certificates of victory. Senior party leaders again blamed EVMs for the losses, with former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Digvijaya Singh and Dalit leader Udit Raj claiming that the electronic voting machines (EVMs) can be hacked and tampered with, though their party colleague Karti Chidambaram said the EVM system is accurate and dependable, and "it's time to stop blaming the EVM". "What is the reason that no developed country is using EVMs... if a chip is there, then it is not tamper-proof," Singh said, alleging "selective" rigging. In Bihar, the Congress's tally dropped from 27 in 2015 to 19 as per the latest trends available, that saw the RJD-led grand alliance narrowly lag behind the BJP-led NDA. Though the Congress improved its vote share from 6.66 per cent in 2015 to nearly 9.5 per cent in this election, its strike rate this time was less than 30 per cent as against 66 percent last time. The grand old party had contested in 70 seats this time with its ally RJD contesting in the majority seats. In 2015, the Congress had contested in 41 seats. On their part, Congress sources said it would be "unfair" to say that the party fared poorly as it contested those seats in Bihar which were traditionally NDA strongholds and the JDU-BJP combine had a strike rate of over 95 in the past. Party insiders said the seats it contested also did not have the advantage of Muslim-Yadav combination and were never contested by it earlier. The presence of AIMIM also cost the Congress dearly as the Asaduddin Owaisi-led outfit won five seats and cost the Mhagathbandhan some 15-odd seats, insiders said. The RJD had also not won those seats since 1990, a leader claimed, adding that even in 2015 when RJD-JDU-Cong fought as part of 'Mahagathbandhan', the Congress had won 23 out of 32 seats from this area. Leaders said the party failed to put up a strong base in Bihar in the last two years after its former Bihar chief Ashok Choudhary defected to the JDU, and could not consolidate its position riding on the RJD support-base. Shiv Sena, an ally of Congress in Maharashtra, also accused the Congress of being the "weak-link" and dragging down the RJD. Sena's Sanjay Raut said had the Congress performed better, Tejaswi Yadav would have been declared CM by now. Of the 28 seats in Madhya Pradesh, the party lost 19 seats to the BJP and was leading in 8 seats it was holding, with Congress rebel Jyotiraditya Scindia posting big gains for the saffron party. In UP and Gujarat, the Congress drew a blank in 15 bypoll seats in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. However, one consolation for the Congress was its victory in bypolls in Haryana's Baroda seat, where the BJP is in power. The Congress held on to its Baroda assembly seat in the bypoll necessitated after the death of its MLA Shri Krishan Hooda. The Congress also won one seat each in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand in bypolls held today.

Grand Alliance loses ground in Bihar election due to Congress' underperformance

Forming an alliance with his rival for <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/JDU-wins-Bihar-Elections-2015/articleshow/49710372.cms">Bihar elections 2015</a> worked in favour of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=lalu+prasad+yadav">Lalu Prasad Yadav</a>. 
 
<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Nitish+Kumar">Nitish Kumar’s JDU</a>, which ousted Prasad’s RJD in 2005, formed a grand alliance with the RJD supremo and won the state elections. 
This victory has yet again brought Prasad in the political limelight after 10 years. 
 
Prasad, who proved to be a crowd and vote magnate during elections, is going to be the kingmaker. 
 In contrast to 22 seats in 2010, Prasad’s RJD in <keyword id="2857351" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar-Elections-2015">Bihar elections 2015</keyword> won 80 seats. 
 Despite having the upper hand, Prasad has let Kumar be the <keyword id="587316" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Chief-Minister-of-Bihar">chief minister of Bihar</keyword>, backing JDU like never before. 
 
Not only this, the RJD boss helped the Grand Alliance consolidate the OBC vote-bank in its favour by attacking RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for his suggestion for reviewing the reservation policy. 
 
The BJP’s poll plank of Prasad’s ‘jungle raj’ backfired too and the RJD chief galvanised its votes to JD (U) candidates too. 
 
The BJP, which began its poll pitch on development and economic growth, was under pressure and deviated to caste politics. It tried to stop RJP’s juggernaut by giving tickets to 22 Yadav candidates but it failed as well. 
 
Now it is to see in which direction the Grand Alliance will steer Bihar to. Will the kingmaker return with his scams as well? How will be the favour returned to his family including his wife Rabri Devi, sons Tejashwi and Tej Pratap and his daughter Misa Bharti, who campaigned for the elections? Time will tell.

Bihar elections: Lalu Prasad Yadav returns to political centre stage after 10 years and how!

The <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> isn’t the only party that has emerged victorious in the 2019 general elections. The engineering graduate and former UN public health official hails from Bihar. Kishor, who also advised the BJP during its successful general election campaign in 2014 as well as Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal United (JDU) in 2015, spearheaded the <keyword id="337550" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="YSR-Congress">YSR Congress</keyword>’s campaign this time around. The party handily won all 25 constituencies in Andhra Pradesh and 144 out of 175 seats in the Legislative Assembly - a staggering victory by any measure. The 25 seats actually make it the third-largest single party in the Lok Sabha after the BJP and Congress. For the last two years, Jagan Mohan Reddy’s party has been working with the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC), the organisation founded by Kishor. I-PAC had a coordinator in every constituency in Andhra Pradesh, providing feedback to the organisation’s leaders on a regular basis. As a result of Kishor’s efforts, YSR Congress will form the government in Andhra Pradesh for the first time, displacing the incumbent chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and his TDP (Telugu Desam Party). The crushing defeat of NDA is likely to moderate the pace of economic reforms and there is even a possibility that the rollout of the Goods and Services Tax bill (GST) could face a setback, something that the <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> government has been keen in pushing in the Parliament. 
 
"A victory for the Grand Alliance is only going to increase the resistance to legislative business in Parliament," said a senior official in the finance ministry, who did not wish to be identified. 
 Notably, officials in the finance ministry were awaiting the verdict of the Bihar assembly polls to get a sense of how fast the Narendra Modi government can push the <keyword id="387846" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="GST-Bill">GST bill</keyword> in Parliament. 
 The government lacks a majority in the Rajya Sabha, and may find it extremely difficult to push through legislative changes with an emboldened opposition. The government's plan to gain the numbers advantage in the Rajya Sabha through victories in state elections has also suffered a setback and is likely to hurt legislation. While the government has said it will press ahead with reforms, the <keyword id="483288" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bihar-election-results">Bihar election results</keyword> add an element of doubt, experts say. 
 
"Indian financial markets were cautious ahead of the election results, and a result against the BJP should lead to market weakness. We feel that today's results — the BJP's big defeat — could be a material sentiment dampener in Monday's early trade as this might be perceived as an additional stumbling block to the central government's reform agenda," said Sidhartha Sanyal and Rahul Bajoria, economists at Barclays Bank. 
 
Finance minister Arun Jaitley had hoped to roll out GST by April 1, 2016 but that looks difficult to achieve, considering the government still has a lot of ground to cover to push the most ambitious indirect tax reform since Independence. With assembly elections due in Assam, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, the road ahead may be rocky. Similarly, the pace and direction of labour reforms could also face roadblocks. 
 
The winter session of Parliament, which was expected to see progress on GST, may be stormy as the opposition is likely to step up its attack on the government on various issues. The NDA government has taken several steps to boost sentiment and growth but an overwhelming view has been that the speed of economic reforms has not kept pace with the need of the economy. Economists said the government should focus on the farm sector and address rural distress. "The focus should shift away from foreign tours, FDI and bullet trains to what are happening in the farms and rural space," said Ashok Gulati, Infosys chair professor at ICRIER, an economics think tank.

NDA's defeat may delay GST rollout, decelerate pace of reforms

A total of 163 ( 68 per cent) out of the 241 winners in the Bihar Assembly polls have declared criminal cases against themselves in the poll affidavits, with <keyword id="42678" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="RJD">RJD</keyword> topping the list with around 73 per cent, Bihar Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) said. Of the 163 MLA-elects, 123 (51 per cent of total affidavits analysed) have serious criminal cases pending against them, including those related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and crimes against women. In the 2015 Assembly elections, 142 (58 per cent) MLAs had self-declared such cases against them in their affidavits. This time, the ADR had analysed the self-sworn affidavits of 241 of the 243 victorious candidates. The ADR did not say anything on such details of remaining winners. The results of the three-phase elections were declared on Wednesday early morning after counting that went on for over 20 hours. Out of the 123 winners, 19 have murder cases, 31 attempt to murder and eight crimes against women against their names. Among the major parties, 54 (73 per cent) of the 74 winners from Tejashwi Yadav-led <keyword id="123786" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Janata-Dal">Rashtriya Janata Dal</keyword> (RJD) have pending criminal cases, followed by 47 (64 per cent) out of 73 from BJP, 20 (47 per cent) out of 43 from Janata Dal-United, 16 (84 per cent) out of 19 from Congress, 10 (83 per cent) out of 12 from Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist Liberation, and five (100 per cent) out of 5 from Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. A total of 44 (60 per cent) out of 74 RJD winners, 35 (48 per cent) out of 73 from BJP, 11 (26 per cent) out of 43 from JD-U, 11 (58 per cent) out of 19 from Congress, eight (67 per cent) out of 12 from CPI-MLL and 5 (100 per cent) out of 5 from AIMIM have serious criminal cases pending against them. This was after he criticized Kumar, the party head’s stand in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (2019). In 2017 Punjab assembly elections, Prashant Kishor helped the Congress candidate Amarinder Singh win the elections and become the CM after the party had lost two consecutive elections in the state. He was also employed by the Congress party for UP election campaign in 2017. This time he had failed but he blamed Rahul Gandhi’s failing image for it. In 2019, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy designated Kishor’s organization as his campaign partner and his party won 151 out of 175 seats. On February 2020, the DMK chief M K Stalin declared that Prashant Kishor had been signed up as the election strategist for the party for assembly elections in 2021. Political circles say that he would now focus on the Bihar and Bengal elections next.

This is the thirteenth largest state in India in terms of size and third largest in terms of population. Bihar shares its borders with Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, West Bengal and Jharkhand. The total number of eligible voters in the state as per the electoral rolls is 7,07,43,593 among whom, the males are 3,74,41,954 and females are 3,32,99,233. The state of Bihar gave 22 Lok Sabha seats to the BJP during 2014 general elections. LJP won 6 seats and RJD had 4 seats during these elections with other parties securing 8 places. BJP has announced that the party’s spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi and former Lok Sabha MP Satish Dubey will contest for these two Rajya Sabha MP posts from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar respectively. Samastipur in Bihar will go for by polls due to the demise of Ramchandra Paswan who won from this seat on behalf of LJP in 2019 elections. Congress has nominated Dr. Ashok Kumar to contest from this seat. Earlier during the last elections, he lost to Ramchandra Paswan. During the upcoming bye polls on October 21, 2019, Sayeeda Banu, Rita Chaudhary, Harendra Mirdha and Mannu Devi will field for Congress party from the assembly constituencies of Kishanganj (Bihar), Mandawa (Rajasthan), Khinwsar (Rajasthan) and Balha (Uttar Pradesh) respectively.

BJP candidate and Olympian wrestler <keyword id="157783" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yogeshwar-Dutt">Yogeshwar Dutt</keyword> is trailing by a margin of 10,330 votes from the <keyword id="9291236" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baroda-assembly-seat">Baroda Assembly seat</keyword> in Haryana after eleven rounds of counting, as per the Election Commission data. Congress candidate <keyword id="10250926" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="indu-raj-narwal">Indu Raj Narwal</keyword> has continued to maintain a lead over Dutt, his nearest rival, as per initial trends. After the completion of eleven rounds of counting, Narwal polled 35,301 votes while Dutt got 24,971 votes. Indian National Lok Dal nominee <keyword id="10252015" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="joginder-singh-malik">Joginder Singh Malik</keyword> polled 3,548 votes while Loktantra Suarkasha Party candidate Raj Kumar Saini got 3,241 votes. The counting of votes for the bypoll to the Baroda assembly seat began at 8 am on Tuesday. There will be 20 rounds of counting. Three-tier security has been provided at the counting centre at Mohana in Sonipat, according to officials. The polling on November 3 for the Baroda assembly seat had recorded an overall turnout of 68.57 per cent, sealing the fate of 14 candidates. The Baroda assembly seat fell vacant in April following the death of Congress MLA Shri Krishan Hooda, who had won it thrice consecutively in the 2009, 2014 and 2019 assembly polls. The <keyword id="9291239" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baroda-bypoll">Baroda bypoll</keyword> is being seen as a direct contest between the ruling BJP and the Congress. The ruling BJP would like to register a victory from the Baroda seat which it never won while the Congress would like to retain it. The Baroda bypoll is also a battle of prestige for former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda as this Jat-dominated constituency lies adjacent to his own Garhi-Sampla Kiloi seat in Rohtak and is considered his stronghold. The bypoll is equally important for the INLD which had slumped to its worst-ever performance in the 2019 assembly polls when the party could win only one out of 90 seats. Baroda was a reserved seat till 2005 and a pocket borough of the INLD before the Congress won it for three consecutive terms since 2009. The BJP had won 40 of the 90 assembly seats in 2019 and later formed the government with the JJP's support, which had won 10 seats. A win in Baroda will take the saffron party's tally to 41 while if Congress wins, its tally will remain unchanged at 31 as the seat was earlier held by it. The INLD's strength will rise to two if they win the seat.
