After touching its lifetime peak of 42,959.25 in the opening session, the 30-share BSE index was trading 216.15 points or 0.51 per cent higher at 42,813.58. Similarly, the broader NSE Nifty too claimed a fresh high of 12,557.05. Later, it was trading with 51.65 points or 0.41 per cent gain at 12,512.70. ICICI Bank was the top gainer, surging around 3 per cent, followed by ONGC, HDFC, L&amp;T, SBI, HDFC Bank, IndusInd Bank and Bajaj Finance. On the other hand, Tech Mahindra, Infosys, HCL Tech, TCS, Nestle India and Maruti were in the red. In the previous session, Sensex ended 704.37 points or 1.68 per cent higher at 42,597.43 -- its record closing high. The Nifty too closed at a lifetime high of 12,461.05, up 197.50 points or 1.61 per cent. Trade set up in domestic equities continues to look good with Asian markets are trading in green with handsome gains, said Arjun Yash Mahajan Head Institutional Business at Reliance Securities. "Clarity over COVID-19 vaccine is likely to ease the concerns of the possible second wave of coronavirus in India, which essentially means that revival of economic activities should persist. The domestic market should continue to see traction in the equities market in the near term," he said. Amid positive signals, investors were also cautious ahead of <keyword id="9317522" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-bihar-assembly">the Bihar Assembly</keyword> election results, traders said. US equities ended mostly higher as positive news about the COVID-19 vaccine bolstered investor confidence further. Elsewhere in Asia, bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Tokyo were trading up to 0.74 per cent higher in mid-session deals, while Seoul was flat. Foreign institutional investors remained net buyers in the capital market as they purchased shares worth Rs 4,548.39 crore on Monday, according to provisional exchange data. Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude was trading 1.23 per cent lower at USD 41.88 per barrel. There are 6,73,166 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country which is 24.91 per cent of the total caseload, while the number of recoveries has risen to 19,77,779. India's COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 3,09,41,264 samples have been tested up to August 17 with 8,99,864 samples being tested on Monday. Of the 876 fresh deaths reported, 228 are from Maharashtra, 120 from Tamil Nadu, 115 from Karnataka, 82 from Andhra Pradesh, 66 from Uttar Pradesh, 45 from West Bengal, 51 from Punjab, 23 from Madhya Pradesh, 18 from Delhi, 15 from Gujarat, 13 from Kerala, 12 from Haryana, 11 from Rajasthan and 10 from Odisha. Nine fatalities have been reported from Chhattisgarh, eight each from Assam and Telangana, seven each from Bihar and Goa, six each from Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, four from Puducherry, three from Tripura, while Andmana and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh and Manipur have registered one fatality each. Of the total 51,797 deaths, Maharashtra has reported the maximum at 20,265, followed by 5,886 in Tamil Nadu, 4,214 in Delhi, 4,062 in Karnataka, 2,800 in Gujarat, 2,732 in Andhra Pradesh, 2,515 in Uttar Pradesh, 2,473 in West Bengal and 1,128 in Madhya Pradesh. So far, 887 people have died of COVID-19 in Rajasthan, 863 in Punjab, 711 in Telangana, 550 in Haryana, 548 in Jammu and Kashmir, 468 in Bihar, 353 in Odisha, 250 in Jharkhand, 197 in Assam, 169 in Kerala and 158 in Uttarakhand. Chhattisgarh has registered 150 deaths, Puducherry 114, Goa 111, Tripura 62, Chandigarh 30, Andaman and Nicobar Islands 29, Himachal Pradesh 19, Manipur 17, Ladakh 14, Nagaland eight, Meghalaya six, Arunachal Pradesh five, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu two and Sikkim one. The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities. "Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research," the ministry said, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation. India's total coronavirus cases breach 27-lakh mark

coronavirus cases and the total tally stood at 14.35 lakh. Not just the daily cases, but the overall cases have also taken a huge leap in a months' time. India's journey to over 33 lakh cases precisely took six months and twenty-eight days since the emergence of the first case on January 30. On July 17, the country had logged 10 lakh cases, which then doubled to 20 lakh in 20 days, on August 7 and added another 10 lakh on August 23. It has now added 3 lakh cases in four days. As per latest figures released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the total caseload stood at 33,10,234 while the death toll rose to 60,472. The number of recoveries also increased to 25,23,771. Recoveries are 3.5 times the active case, which stand at 7,25,991. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday said that the early identification through aggressive testing, comprehensive surveillance, and contact tracing, and focus on timely and efficient clinical treatment of patients has ensured speedy recoveries and has also kept the case fatality rate low in some states. Many states and union territories in India have better recovery rate and fatality rate than the national average. The overall recovery rate of the country is 76.24 per cent, while the fatality rate is 1.82 per cent of novel coronavirus patients. There are five states and one union territory -- Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Haryana, and Gujarat where the recovery rate is more than 80 per cent, while another four have recovery rate more than 70 per cent. The recovery rate was 7.10 per cent on March 25 when the lockdown was imposed and slowly increased to 7.1 per cent during the first lockdown; 11.42 per cent in second; 26.59 in third lockdown and now 41.61 per cent in the last phase of the lockdown. The recovery rate was 63.92 per cent on July 27, exactly a month ago. The national capital was the first state to cross the 90 per cent recovery rate, this month. On Wednesday, however, a sudden-spike brought it down to 89.82 per cent. More than 1.48 lakh people out of the 1.65 lakh infected so far have been declared recovered. The case fatality rate, which is the proportion of people who die from the disease among individuals diagnosed, is below one per cent in Assam, Kerala, Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh. Besides this, there is a steady decline in the positivity rate, the percentage of tests that return positive, despite an exponential increase in testing. It has come down to eight per cent from eleven per cent during the first week of August. Another parameter called basic reproduction number or R value which is used to measure the rate at which the infection is spreading, has also decreased in a weeks' time. The value has come down to 1.04 from 1.05 in a week. It was 1.83 in April. The disease is considered to be under control when its value falls below one.
