But the recent trend of bridge collapses in Bihar takes not just the cake, but the entire bakery: 10 bridges have fallen apart in just 16 days. On Wednesday, three more bridges succumbed to pressure, taking the total number to nine in just the last fortnight. This comes just a day after the state government scrambled to form a committee to investigate the reasons behind these frequent failures. And on Thursday, another such incident was reported. The latest incidents involved two bridges in <keyword id="21568598" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="siwan" source="keywords">Siwan</keyword> district, both built on the Gandak river's tributary, the chhadi. One bridge dated back to 1982-83, while the other was constructed in 1998. In Saran district, two small bridges - one in Janta Bazar area and another in Lahladpur area collapsed, disrupting vital connectivity between two villages. Government representatives point towards the monsoon rains as a contributing factor. Consistent downpour in Nepal, coupled with heavy showers in Bihar, has caused rivers and rivulets to overflow. The increased water pressure strains the bridge pillars, and scouring by fast currents further weakens the foundations, especially at the points where approach roads meet the bridges. Photos from the collapse sites visually confirm this erosion. According to retired engineers and other specialists, the <keyword id="22282207" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bridge-failures" source="keywords">bridge failures</keyword> are a result of cut corners, the Deccan Herald <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/india/bihar/why-bridges-in-bihar-are-falling-like-ninepins-3089895" data-type="tilCustomLink">reported</a>. They point to problems like using cheap materials instead of high-quality ones, ignoring approved blueprints, and skimping on inspections during construction. Additionally, they claim government engineers weren't properly overseeing the work, and the right mix of concrete ingredients wasn't followed. The bridge collapse saga began on June 18 in Bihar’s Araria district, where a portion of a bridge over the Bakra river gave way. Altogether 10 bridges collapsed in Siwan, Saran, Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran and Kishanganj districts in the past 16 days, as per sources. Bihar bridge collapse number climbs to 10 in 16 days after three more topple within 24 hours

Another bridge collapsed in <keyword id="19903647" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bihar" source="keywords">Bihar</keyword>'s <keyword id="21253009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saran" source="keywords">Saran</keyword> district on Thursday, the 10th such incident in the state in just over a fortnight. According to District Magistrate Aman Samir, the latest incident is the third such collapse in Saran in the last 24 hours. "A high-level probe has been ordered to find out reasons for the collapse of these small bridges in the district," he said. No casualty was reported after the structure, built 15 years ago by local authorities, collapsed this morning, he said. The small bridge over the Gandaki river was situated in the Baneyapur block and used to connect several villages in Saran with the neighbouring Siwan district. "The small bridge was constructed 15 years ago. I am going to the spot. Several other officials of the district administration have already reached there. The exact cause of the <keyword id="21078169" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bridge-collapse" source="keywords">bridge collapse</keyword> is yet to be ascertained but desilting work was recently undertaken," the district magistrate told PTI. On Wednesday, the Saran district witnessed the collapse of two small bridges - one in the Janta Bazar area and another in the Lahladpur area. According to locals, heavy rainfall for the last few days in the district might have contributed to the collapse of these small bridges. Altogether 10 bridges collapsed in Siwan, Saran, Madhubani, Araria, East Champaran and Kishanganj districts in the past 16 days. Commenting on recent incidents of bridge collapse in Bihar, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary on Thursday told reporters, "The CM, after a review meeting on Wednesday, has given a clear instruction to officials concerned to conduct a survey of all old bridges in the state and identify those that require immediate repair. The CM has also asked departments concerned to immediately prepare their respective maintenance policy for bridges or causeways in the state." Chaudhary, also the state BJP president, said the government has already ordered a probe into the bridge collapse incidents to find out the reasons and strict action would be taken against the guilty. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, however, claimed that 12 bridges have collapsed in Bihar since June 18. In a post on X on Thursday, he wrote, "Twelve bridges have collapsed in Bihar since June 18...Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar are silent over these incidents in Bihar. What happened to the claims of good governance and corruption-free government? These incidents show how corruption is rampant in every department of the state government." The latest incident took place a day after Kumar chaired a meeting to review the maintenance policies of the departments concerned. He had said the road construction department had already prepared its bridge maintenance policy and the rural works department should immediately chalk out its plan at the earliest. The bridge was inaugurated by Chief Minister Kumar on June 16. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) <keyword id="9508988" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="leader-tejashwi-yadav">leader Tejashwi Yadav</keyword> and Bihar Congress chief Madan Mohan Jha attacked the Chief Minister on the issue. Tejashwi Yadav, who is also <keyword id="9585832" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-leader-of-opposition-in-the-bihar-assembly">the Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly</keyword>, taunted Kumar saying, beware, if someone called it corruption of Nitish Kumar. He said that Kumar would not utter a word in this matter. Tejashwi posted a picture and video of the culvert and road on his official Twitter handle, saying, "The bridge was built in 8 years at a cost of Rs 263 crore but it collapsed in just 29 days. Bhishma Pitamah of organized corruption Nitish ji will neither speak a word, nor will he sack the corrupt Minister who claims to give Range Rover experiance through a bicycle ride. There is loot in Bihar everywhere." In another tweet, he wrote in sarcasm, "Nitish ji inaugurated the Sattar Ghat bridge of Gopalganj constructed at a cost of Rs 263.47 crore in 8 years, on June 16. Just 29 days later this bridge has collapsed. Beware! If someone calls it corruption of Nitish ji? Rs 263 crore is just a gift. His rats drink liquor worth this amount." A minister in 2017 had blamed rats for making holes in the embankments which led to the collapse of the structure. The Congress also targeted the Nitish government. Senior Congress leader and former state president of Youth Congress Lallan Kumar said this is the result of corruption of the BJP-JDU government. The investigation of the one scam has not even been completed yet and now this. Such a big scam has surfaced on the Ramjanaki path. He said now ministers and officials will share the spoils of the loot. He said that crores of rupees are spent every year in the name of repair of roads during floods, which is like a celebrations for leaders and officials of the ruling party. The Ramjanaki path which was inaugurated just a month ago could not withstand the pressure of Gandak river in Gopalganj district of Bihar and collapsed, creating hindrance to the traffic on this route. With this, the contact with several districts of North Bihar was lost due to road link snap in Khomhaipur in Baikunthpur block of Gopalganj district. This road mainly connects Kesariya and Baikunthpur in East Champaran. An amount of about Rs 263 crore was spent in the construction of the bridge, culvert and approach road.
