Besides, collaborations with at least 10 big film and music production houses, such as Salman Khan Films, T-Series, Fox Star Studios, Red Chillies Entertainment, Jjust Music and Ashutosh Gowariker Productions Pvt Ltd, gave further push to the user engagement on the platform through various hashtag challenges. Referring to the latest milestone, Likee spokesperson Mike Ong said, “We continued to expand Likee's geographic coverage, refine its content offerings, and augment its monetization capabilities. The sources also said that many of these applications are refurbished versions of apps already banned by India in 2020. The latest move could be a fallout of the current standoff between India and China locked in a protracted border dispute. This is the first lot of apps to be banned by the government this year after a total of 270 apps were banned since 2020. New Delhi, Mar 19 () Social media app Likee on Thursday said it has crossed 115 million month active users globally and that it sees a huge growth potential in India. The short video platform, developed by Bigo Technology, claims to have recorded 208 per cent growth in its active user base. "According to the report released by the company for October-December 2019 quarter, the monthly active users (MAU) of Likee reached 115.3 million from 37.4 million in the corresponding period of 2018, representing an increase of around 208 per cent on yearly basis," Bigo Technology Pte Vice President Mike Ong told . Ong attributed the growth in MAU to expansion of geographical coverage, augmentation of monetisation capability, among others. "We continued to expand Likee's geographic coverage, refine its content offerings, and augment its monetisation capabilities. As a result, Likee's total MAU swelled, representing a whopping increase on yearly as well as sequential basis," he said. The company, which now operates across 180 countries, sees India as a promising market with a large growth potential. "Likee is growing rapidly and has seen a strong momentum globally. Likee is evolving to be the most favoured short video platform among its audience. India provides a huge scope for growth and will stand to be a promising market for us in the future as well," Ong said. List of 59 Chinese apps banned in India by Indian government

(Eds: Adding more details) New Delhi, July 1 () State-owned BSNL on Wednesday cancelled a multi-crore tender for 4G telecom network upgrade after the government asked the firm not to use any Chinese equipment. The move comes against the backdrop of a growing clamour against Chinese goods and services after the violent clash at border with China. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) on Wednesday issued a notice for cancellation of the 4G tender. A source privy to the development told that a new tender will be floated which will have emphasis on preference to Make in India. BSNL Chairman could not be reached for comments. "Tender for planning, engineering, supply, installation, testing, commissioning and annual maintenance of 4G mobile network in north, east, west and south zones of BSNL and Delhi and Mumbai LSA of MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd) on turnkey basis...issued on March 23, 2020 is hereby cancelled," BSNL notice said. The notice for cancellation has been "issued with the approval of competent authority", it added. Meanwhile sources said that government had earlier directed BSNL not to use Chinese equipment in 4G upgrade, and implementation of the direction meant that the company has to issue a new tender. Keeping in view the developing Indian capacity and in-house technology, a new tender will be floated, the source said adding this will have emphasis on preference to Make in India. Nearly a fortnight ago, the telecom department had asked state-owned BSNL and MTNL to shun the use of Chinese telecom equipment in their 4G upgrade, underlining a hardening of stance in the backdrop of tensions at the India-China border. On June 29, India banned 59 apps with Chinese links, including hugely popular TikTok and UC Browser, saying they were prejudicial to sovereignty, integrity and security of the country. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a list of 59 Chinese apps that are now banned in the country. "These measures have been undertaken since there is credible information that these apps are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order," said a MeitY statement. The ministry received complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India. "The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures," the statement read. Indian government bans 47 more Chinese mobile apps

New Delhi, June 30 (IANS) Chinese short-video making app TikTok on Tuesday said it is in the process of complying with the Indian government order to ban 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, and is not sharing any data of Indian users with the Chinese government. The Indian government on Monday banned apps like TikTok, WeChat, UC Browser and Xiaomi's Mi Community over national security concerns as India-China bilateral relations remain strained after the death of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley clash with Chinese PLA troops in eastern Ladakh. "The government of India has issued an interim order for the blocking of 59 apps, including TikTok and we are in the process of complying with it," Nikhil Gandhi, Head of TikTok India, said in a statement, adding that the company has been invited to meet with concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. "TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and have not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government," Gandhi explained. The app disappeared from both Google Play Store and Apple App Store on Tuesday. There was no official communication from Google or Apple on its removal from their respective stores. ByteDance-owned TikTok said that it places the highest importance on user privacy and integrity. "TikTok has democratized the internet by making it available in 14 Indian languages, with hundreds of millions of users, artists, story-tellers, educators and performers depending on it for their livelihood, many of whom are first-time internet users," said Gandhi. The Indian government banned popular Chinese apps like TikTok, WeChat, UC Browser and Xiaomi's Mi Community and more to safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile users. "This is a welcome move from the government against platforms that have had serious privacy, cyber security and national security risks. San Francisco/New Delhi, Taking India's example of banning more than 200 Chinese <keyword id="6354741" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Apps">apps</keyword>, US President <keyword id="6354484" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Donald-Trump">Donald Trump</keyword> has signed a new executive order that blocks transactions with Chinese companies running eight apps, including Jack Ma-owned Ant Group's Alipay, Tencent's QQ and <keyword id="1160904" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="WeChat">WeChat</keyword> Pay <keyword id="6371395" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="applications">applications</keyword>. Transactions will be prohibited in 45 days, said the order. Other apps include CamScanner, QQ Wallet, SHAREit, Tencent QQ, VMate, WeChat Pay, and <keyword id="2763436" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="wps-office">WPS Office</keyword> -- which are already banned in India. "The Government of India has banned the use of more than 200 Chinese connected software applications throughout the country; in a statement, India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology asserted that the applications were stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India," <keyword id="6354862" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="trump">Trump</keyword> wrote in his new executive order. The new executive order follows two earlier ones from Trump in August last year where he tried to ban transactions with <keyword id="3749909" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bytedance">ByteDance</keyword>, TikTok's parent company, and WeChat. However, a judge blocked the WeChat ban in September and in October, a judge granted a preliminary injunction stopping the TikTok ban in December. "The pace and pervasiveness of the spread in the United States of certain connected mobile and desktop applications and other software developed or controlled by persons in the People's Republic of China, to include Hong Kong and Macau (China), continue to threaten the <keyword id="113687" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-security">national security</keyword>, foreign policy, and economy of the United States," the executive order further read. "The US must take aggressive action against those who develop or control Chinese connected software applications to protect our national security." The Trump order said that "the continuing activity of the PRC and the CCP to steal or otherwise obtain United States persons' data makes clear that there is an intent to use bulk data collection to advance China's economic and national security agenda". On June 29 last year, the government banned 59 Chinese apps in the first lot, including TikTok, WeChat, UC Browser and Xiaomi's Mi Community, over national security concerns amid the border tussle in Eastern Ladakh which led to the death of 20 Indian soldiers in a bloody clash with Chinese PLA troops in the Galwan Valley in June 2020. Other Chinese apps in the banned list were Club Factory, SHAREit, Likee, Mi Video Call (Xiaomi), Weibo, Baidu, BIGO LIVE and more. In July, the government barred 47 Chinese apps from operating in the country, which were largely clones of the 59 apps that were banned in June. The Indian government on September 2 banned 118 apps on national security concerns, including the immensely popular PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile, Baidu and couple of virtual private networks that allowed access to TikTok that was banned earlier. Continuing with its ban orders on Chinese apps, the Indian government in November blocked 43 new mobile apps, including shopping website AliExpress owned by e-commerce behemoth Alibaba. After India, US President Donald Trump blocks eight Chinese apps including Alipay, WeChat Pay and Tencent's QQ

New Delhi, June 30 (IANS) Chinese short-video making app TikTok and vernacular social networking platform Helo who have millions of users in India on Tuesday said they are in the process of complying with the government order to ban 59 Chinese apps and are not sharing any data of Indian users with the Chinese government. The government on Monday banned apps like TikTok, SHAREit, Helo, WeChat, UC Browser and Xiaomi's Mi Community over national security concerns as India-China bilateral relations remain strained after the death of 20 Indian soldiers in the Galwan Valley clash with Chinese PLA troops in eastern Ladakh. "The government of India has issued an interim order for the blocking of 59 apps, including TikTok and we are in the process of complying with it," said Nikhil Gandhi, Head of TikTok India, adding that the company has been "invited to meet with concerned government stakeholders" for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. "TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law and have not shared any information of our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government," Gandhi explained. A Helo spokesperson told IANS that they are also in the process of complying with the government order. "We are working with the key stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. Helo continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law," the spokesperson added. The mobile messaging app Helo is available in 14 languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. TikTok and Helo, both owned by Chinese content giant ByteDance, disappeared from both Google Play Store and Apple App Store on Tuesday. There was no official communication from Google or Apple on the removal from their respective stores. TikTok had nearly 119 million active users in India and was among the top 10 apps on Google Play store and Apple App store. However, other banned apps like Alibaba Group's UC Browser and UC News, Xiaomi's Mi community, Tencent-owned WeChat, e-commerce platform Club Factory and document scanning app CamScanner were still available on the platforms for download. Users who have the TikTok or <keyword id="7650306" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Helo-App">Helo app</keyword> on their mobile phone can still use them. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a list of 59 Chinese apps that are now banned in the country. "There is credible information that these apps are engaged in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order," read a MeitY statement. The ministry received complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users' data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India. The MeitY said the move will safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile users. Other Chinese apps in the banned list are Club Factory, CamScanner, Shein, Likee, Mi Video Call (Xiaomi), Weibo, Baidu, Bigo Live and others.

The ongoing India-China border tensions have led to an increase in the anti-China sentiment in the country, with people calling for boycott of Chinese goods. The 59 Chinese apps which have been banned will likely no longer be available for download in the Google Play store and Apple app store in India. Further, reports <a href="https://twitter.com/shukla_tarun/status/1277628942850027526">suggest</a> that the government could also issue an order to internet service providers in India to block host servers used by these Chinese apps. This will prevent users who already have these apps installed from using them, essentially rendering them useless.
