Counted as it is among the world’s fastest growing economies, an unfathomable amount of money flows in and out of the Indian economic system. But there are cracks in said system, and ever so often, a fraudulent mastermind uses them to slip some cash out for their advantage.<br /><br />From <keyword id="19964851" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ponzi" source="keywords">Ponzi</keyword> schemes to bank frauds, the Indian government and investors have fallen victim to many financial scandals — some of which were so sordid that they can be recounted like they happened yesterday. Here’s a rundown of the most infamous scams in Indian financial history:<br /><h2><keyword id="20713434" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="harshad-mehta" source="keywords">Harshad Mehta</keyword> Scam (1992) – ₹4,000 Crore<br /></h2>Perhaps the most iconic of all Indian financial scams, Harshad Mehta was known as the "Big Bull" of the stock market. He manipulated stock prices using illegal loopholes in the banking system. By obtaining unsecured loans from banks and investing them in the stock market, Mehta artificially inflated stock prices. His bubble burst when banks demanded their money back, revealing the massive fraud. This scandal led to a major reform in India's financial markets.<br /><br />Mehta died in jail before full legal accountability was reached, but the scam caused a significant loss to investors and led to tighter regulation in the Indian stock market.<br /><h2><keyword id="23122396" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="satyam-scam" source="keywords">Satyam Scam</keyword> (2009) – ₹14,000 Crore<br /></h2>Dubbed as India’s Enron, the Satyam scandal involved its founder, <keyword id="23122397" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="ramalinga-raju" source="keywords">Ramalinga Raju</keyword>, admitting to falsifying the company's accounts to the tune of ₹14,000 crore. Satyam Computer Services, once considered a blue-chip company, was found guilty of inflating profits and revenues. Raju admitted to the scam after a failed attempt to buy two Maytas firms owned by his family. This case brought corporate governance issues in India to the forefront.<br /><br />Raju was convicted, but the legal processes have allowed him temporary freedom through bail. But this incident called for improved transparency and stricter corporate governance norms.<br /><h2>Punjab National Bank Scam (2018) – ₹13,700 Crore<br /></h2>Diamond merchant Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi orchestrated one of the largest frauds in Indian banking history by obtaining fraudulent Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) from Punjab National Bank (PNB). These LoUs allowed them to obtain loans from foreign branches of Indian banks without providing any collateral. The scam involved over ₹13,700 crore, and Modi fled the country, causing significant reputational damage to India’s banking sector.<br /><br />Nirav Modi’s extradition is still pending, and Mehul Choksi remains out of India’s legal jurisdiction. The scam, however, resulted in strengthened banking regulations regarding LoUs and SWIFT transactions.<br /><h2><keyword id="23122399" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vijay-mallya-scam" source="keywords">Vijay Mallya Scam</keyword> (2016) – ₹9,000 Crore</h2>The "King of Good Times" was living large while his airline, Kingfisher, was drowning in debt. Vijay Mallya allegedly defaulted on loans amounting to ₹9,000 crore from various banks. He fled to the UK in 2016, leaving creditors, employees, and stakeholders in financial distress. His lavish lifestyle amidst the collapse of his airline made this scandal a high-profile case.<br /><br />Mallya’s extradition process is ongoing, but he remains out of reach of Indian authorities. The main impact was enhanced scrutiny of loan defaults and triggered legal reforms on extradition.<br /><h2>Saradha Chit Fund Scam (2013) – ₹2,500 Crore<br /></h2>The Saradha Group, operating a ponzi scheme disguised as a chit fund, promised unrealistically high returns to its investors, mostly in West Bengal and Odisha. The scam collapsed, leaving over 1.7 million people, many of whom were low-income investors, without their life savings. Politicians and celebrities were also implicated in the case.<br /><br />While Sudipta Sen is behind bars, not all the accomplices have been held accountable. Telecom minister A. Raja was at the centre of this controversy, which allegedly caused a loss of ₹1.76 lakh crore to the exchequer. The case was seen as a massive blow to public trust in India’s telecom sector and led to significant political fallout.<br /><br />Sadly, all key figures involved were acquitted despite the Supreme Court’s intervention and cancellation of 122 telecom licences.<br /><br /><h2><keyword id="455134" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="coal-allocation-scam" source="Orion">Coal Allocation Scam</keyword> (Coalgate) (2012) – ₹1,86,000 Crore<br /></h2>The coal allocation scam, or "Coalgate," involved the illegal allocation of coal blocks to private companies between 2004 and 2009. The CAG of India estimated a loss of ₹1.86 lakh crore to the exchequer due to non-competitive bidding. Many high-profile politicians and industrialists were implicated, making this one of the largest political scandals in India.<br /><br />While some officials faced legal consequences, many key players were not prosecuted. But it did trigger policy reforms in the allocation of natural resources.<br /><br /><h2>DHFL Scam (2019) – ₹34,615 Crore<br /></h2>Dewan Housing Finance Corporation Limited (DHFL) was accused of syphoning off over ₹34,000 crore through a series of shell companies and fraudulent loans. Investigations revealed that the promoters used these funds for personal enrichment and illegal political donations. The case came to light after an investigation by investigative journalists and was later confirmed by a report from KPMG.<br /><br />The case is ongoing, and the main accused are in custody. For now, regulations governing non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) have been strengthened.<br /><br /><h2>Yes Bank Crisis (2020) – ₹3,788 Crore<br /></h2>Yes Bank, under its founder <keyword id="19899935" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rana-kapoor" source="keywords">Rana Kapoor</keyword>, was involved in questionable lending practices. The bank made high-risk loans to companies already in financial trouble, which eventually turned into non-performing assets (NPAs). Kapoor was arrested, and the Reserve Bank of India had to step in to stabilise the bank. The case highlighted serious lapses in corporate governance and risk management.<br /><br />As of now, Rana Kapoor is facing trial, and legal proceedings are active. The RBI has also introduced new measures to monitor the health of banks more rigorously.<br /><h2>Commonwealth Games Scam (2010) – ₹70,000 Crore<br /></h2>The 2010 Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi were overshadowed by corruption allegations involving inflated contracts and kickbacks. <keyword id="23122398" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="suresh-kalmadi" source="keywords">Suresh Kalmadi</keyword>, the head of the organising committee, was arrested for awarding contracts at exorbitant rates. The estimated loss to the exchequer was around ₹70,000 crore. This will be the first market outside South Kores where the country is listed.<br /><br />Hyundai, which entered the Indian market in 1996 is one of the top automakers in India, moving between the second and third spots. The company emerged as the second biggest automaker in Hyundai. Since it entered the Indian market, the company has sold over 80 lakh cars in the country.<br /><br />Hyundai intends to establish India as a global manufacturing and export hub for the company and this might be an initial step in this direction.<br /><br />KFin Technologies is the registrar for the public issue and advisors for the issue include Kotak Investment Banking, Citi, HSBC, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley.<br /><br /><h2>India’s biggest IPO</h2>Hyundai India is looking to raise ₹27,870 crore from the IPO, significantly higher than the ₹21,008 crore raised by the state-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in 2022, making it the biggest IPO in India’s history.<br /><br /><div type="Article" hostid="261" msid="111690863" title="The biggest IPOs in India’s history – LIC to Paytm, companies that have raised the most funds" mstype="2" mssubtype="0"></div><br /><h2>About the IPO</h2>The upcoming IPO from Hyundai is entirely an offer for sale (OFS), with the company looking to offload up to 17.5% of shares, which is 14.22 crore shares with a price band of ₹1865 to ₹1,960 per share. Bids can be made in a lot size of 7 shares or multiples of 7 shares.<br /><br />The IPO opens on October 15 and will close on October 18. While the allotment will be finalised on October 18, the shares will be listed on the stock exchange on October 22.<br /><br />At the upper end of the price band, Hyundai Motor India will be valued at $18 billion (approx. ₹1.6 lakh crore), which is around 40% of its parent company, Hyundai Global’s $45 billion valuation.<br /><br />As it is entirely an OFS, the company won’t receive any funds and all the funds raised will go to Hyundai Global. However, the company has said that part of the funds will be allocated towards research and development, especially in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid technologies.<br /><br />The company has reserved 7.78 lakh shares with a value of ₹131 to ₹138 crore for employees. Employees will get these shares at a discount of ₹186 per share.<br /><br /><h2>First carmaker in over two decades to go public</h2>In addition to being the biggest IPO in the country’s history, this will also make the company the first car maker to go public in India in over two decades. Consumers in emerging markets are looking at 5G handsets as an upgrade to their devices, even in the lower price segments,” Singh added.<br /><br />India recorded the highest growth in 5G smartphone shipments among the top five countries.<br /><br />India’s 5G smartphone shipments increased by 60% from H1 2023 to H1 2024. During the same period, China recorded a 14% growth, while the US recorded a mere 2% growth.<br /><br />Out of the total 5G smartphones shipped globally, 32% were shipped to China, followed by 13% each to India and the US.<br /><br /><h2>Apple leads 5G smartphone shipments</h2>With all of Apple’s smartphones being 5G enabled, the Cupertino tech giant leads the 5G race, accounting for over 25% of 5G smartphone shipments. Samsung comes in second with a 21% share.<br /><br />“ As the democratisation of 5G handsets increases with increasing 5G penetration in lower price segments as well as increasing expansion of 5G networks, this trend will further grow. The ongoing global premiumization trend will further fuel this growth. Think Initial Public Offers (IPOs) are a sure-shot, quickfire method to make a quick buck? If so, then investing in some of India's biggest IPOs to date would have created multiple millionaires. However, if the data is to be believed, 18 out of India's top 30 IPOs by way of size have failed to deliver on the returns front. <br /><br />Recent data from Capitalmind PMS suggests that of all the mega IPOs India has seen in the past 2 decades, only 12 IPOs i.e. stocks of 12 companies have delivered more returns that what you would have received, had you bought and held your investments in Nifty500(which invests in biggest 500 companies by market size). <br /><br />Infact, Paytm (54%), <keyword id="20024191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Power" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Reliance Power" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Reliance Power">Reliance Power</keyword> (81%), General Insurance Corporation (2%) actually generated negative total returns to date. The only outliers in the list of top 10 IPOs were Zomato (listed in July 2021) and Coal India (listed in April, 2010), which managed to generate excess returns i.e. more than what was generated by Nifty500. <br /><br />While Zomato's total return to date, which is considered a comprehensive gauge of a stock's profitability, stands at 265%, Coal India total returns are a massive 443%. In these cases, had you simply bought and held the Nifty500 index for a similar duration, your returns would've been 73%, and 435% respectively. <br /><br />Also, 5 of the biggest IPOs India has ever seen (Bajaj Housing Finance, Bharti Hexacom, Brainbees, Ola Electric) have come in the last 2 years.<br /><br />In some cases, having stayed put in your index investments would have yielded you far better returns. Consider this, FSN E-Commerce, Nykaa's parent company, listed on the exchanges on November 2021. Its total returns till date have been 2%, while had you invested in Nifty500 index, your returns would've been 53%. Similarly, the total returns to date on Bandhan Bank's stock, which listed in March 2018, was a negative 43%. While over Rs 50,000 crores have been raised by these share sales so far since 2023, only 22% of these funds raises have come from companies who are hitting the market for the first time i.e. bringing out their IPOs. The rest have come from already listed companies seeking to raise more funds.<br /><br />The biggest IPO that India has seen to date, that of <keyword id="19906087" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hyundai" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Hyundai" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Hyundai">Hyundai</keyword> Motor India, closes for subscription today. With an offer size of Rs 27,870.16 crore, it is 35% bigger than the previous biggest IPO in the country(LIC in May 2022). <br /><br />As of 12:30 pm today, Hyundai's offer had been 87% subscribed, with significant interest from QIBs and employees. At 0.43x, participation of retail investors remained largely subdued.  <br /><br />Notably, an IPO is considered cancelled and withdrawn, if it fails to meet the 90% subscription threshold.<br />

The company plans on raising $3 billion (approx. ₹25,000 crore) at a valuation of $20 billion.<br /><br />The company established its first manufacturing plant in India in 1998, followed by a second plant in 2008. In FY24, Hyundai Motor India was the country’s second-largest carmaker after Maruti Suzuki.<br /><br />Hyundai is offering 14.2 crore shares with a face value of ₹10 each, which is around 17.5% stake in the company. Hyundai Motor India’s ₹25,000 crore IPO gets SEBI approval – India’s biggest IPO expected to launch in October

<ul class="summary-list"><li>For 16 years, I worked in the billing department of a construction company.</li><li>My days were filled with meetings and long emails, and eventually, I decided to quit.</li></ul><p>Sixteen years is a long time. From 2004 until 2020, I worked as a billing specialist in the finance department of a nationwide <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-a-construction-firm-saves-2-million-a-year-by-using-ipads-2018-5">construction company</a>.</p><p>As in many <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/office-culture-then-and-now-2018-5">corporate jobs</a>, my work was filled with unnecessary meetings run by leaders who enjoyed nothing more than hearing themselves speak, unfathomably long emails, and micromanagement, even though I was told repeatedly that the company definitely does not micromanage workers.</p><p>Still, I persisted. Despite my best efforts to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-get-promoted-at-work-2018-7">advance within the company</a>, I found myself trapped in a role that offered no growth. Being highly skilled in a role that few people want often means you're stuck in that role, regardless of your aspirations.</p><h2 id="a6f45dca-dfce-4af7-80ad-4a88b6462720">My family was full of educators</h2><p>Within my extended family, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-people-get-wrong-about-teachers-2018-5">career of choice tended to be that of an educator</a>. Although a few of us took different routes, I had several times over the years considered answering the clarion call of the teacher. But with a wife and four kids to support, it seemed impractical.</p><p>My perspective began to change in 2015. After spending 40-odd years driving a concrete truck, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/early-retirement-not-worth-it-dad-sacrificed-frugal-died-2024-9">my father retired</a>. Not one to sit around, we were all amazed when my dad announced he was hired as a teaching assistant at his district's tech school. A lifelong mechanic, my father was finding fulfillment in providing support in a small engine repair classroom.</p><p>Inspired by his <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/career-change-forties-rewarding-hard-2024-5">career change</a>, I decided it was time for my own career change. I found a two-year program at a local university that would get me a teaching certificate and my Master's in Education. I started the program in 2019 and found myself in the uncomfortable position of being a student again.</p><h2 id="1073cd86-7634-4006-97c5-73c7794807a2">I went back to school</h2><p>The program I enrolled in was a hybrid model that consisted of in-person and online classes. That changed entirely in early 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The program switched to being entirely online. What was supposed to be four months of in-school teaching turned out to be months of Zoom meetings and pre-recorded lessons.</p><p>I persevered, and in December 2020, I graduated with a Master's in Education. A few months later, I passed my certification tests and became a teacher. My first position in my brand-new career began as a substitute teacher in the elementary school I attended as a child. One of those in the "right place at the wrong time" type of situations, I found myself in a sixth-grade classroom of a teacher who unexpectedly went out on maternity leave just as the year began.</p><h2 id="aa15b541-7209-4b70-9c5b-0fdfb5a2baa8">Teaching was one of the hardest things I've done</h2><p>When I state that teaching sixth grade was one of the hardest things I had to do, it's no exaggeration. During our first full year out of the COVID-19 pandemic, students were unaccustomed to in-person school. After a year of Chromebook schooling at home, students clearly were not ready for the more rigorous demands of in-person instruction.</p><p>The one who was the most ill-prepared, however, was myself. While I hadn't worked in the corporate world for over a year, I still hadn't let go of many things that had been instilled in me — paranoia, distrust of people, micromanagement, and limited autonomy.</p><p>But the biggest change for me was going from a cold, calculated environment to one where I was now in charge of 20-plus young souls. It was now my job to teach, entertain, keep in line, and provide emotional support to students, guiding them through their academic and personal growth with empathy and dedication. It was a change that took several years to work through and accept.</p><p>In my fourth year of education, I've found myself working in a great elementary school with an equally wonderful staff and an administration that appears to appreciate my work. While I still occasionally have bouts of imposter syndrome, I've come to accept my new career and enjoy the relationships I'm forging with my students.</p><p>I'm not sure I'll ever be able to stop looking over my shoulder, though.</p>

Working in corporate America burned me out, so I became an elementary school teacher

It's retooling to produce only electric vehicles.</li><li>That means prospective buyers won't be able to snag a Jag in the UK until at least mid-2026.</li></ul><p>Jaguar has stopped selling new vehicles in its home country until at least 2026 as the luxury British automaker prepares to go all-electric.</p><p>As of Monday, Jaguar Land Rover, owned by India-based Tata Motors, won't be shipping any new vehicles to dealers in the UK — and whatever vehicles are left in their inventories will now be considered used, regardless of what their odometers say, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-11-12/brits-can-t-buy-new-jaguars-for-over-a-year-as-brand-goes-electric?cmpid=BBD111224_MORNAMER&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_term=241112&amp;utm_campaign=morningamer">a spokesperson told Bloomberg</a>.</p><p>It's the first time that prospective UK buyers won't be able to choose a Jaguar — a preferred vehicle of the British royal family and UK prime ministers — since World War II, Bloomberg reported.</p><p>Meanwhile, US buyers won't have access to new Jags, either: US dealers will be able to sell what's left from the 2024 model year — and will then have to wait to get the new all-electric Jags, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a62716329/future-of-jaguar/">Car and Driver reported</a>.</p><p>The company has said it plans to reveal more details later this year, but for now, its new EVs aren't expected to launch for more than a year — sometime in 2026, a Jaguar Land Rover spokesperson <a target="_blank" href="https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/jaguar-stops-selling-new-cars-in-the-uk-as-brand-readies-rebirth-in-2026/309520">told the UK's Car Dealer Magazine</a>.</p><p>Jaguar <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-02-15/jaguar-going-all-electric-marks-new-ceo-s-turnaround-plan">had earlier announced, in 2021, that it would ditch internal combustion engines </a>and go all-in on EVs. The move came shortly after the UK's prime minister at the time, Boris Johnson, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uk-ban-sale-new-gas-diesel-cars-vehicles-2030-2020-11">outlined his 10-point "green industrial revolution" plan</a>.</p><p>Jaguar unveiled its <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://media.jaguar.com/en-us/news/2018/09/jaguar-announces-national-marketing-launch-plans-all-electric-jaguar-i-pace">first and only all-electric vehicle in 2018</a>, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.jaguar.com/electric-cars/all-electric.html">I-Pace SUV</a>, though it <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.jaguar.com/electric-cars/vehicles.html">also offers</a> plug-in electric hybrid cars and other hybrids.</p><div type="image" title="image of electric Jaguar vehicle" height="6069" width="10771" msid="115230046" hostid="261" sizebytes="637934"></div><p>Earlier this year, Jaguar stopped producing its XE, XF, and F-Type models at its Castle Bromwich plant in the UK, and assembly of its E-Pace and I-Pace models in Austria will cease by the end of this year as the company prepares to announce its new EV models, Car Dealer Magazine reported.</p><p>Jaguar has already invested about $320 million to prepare its Halewood UK plant for all-EV production, and will inject another $320 million into the plant in the coming years, the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://media.jaguarlandrover.com/news/2024/09/jlr-invests-ps500-million-creating-ev-factory-future-merseyside">company said in September</a>.</p><p>In the September <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://cardealermagazine.co.uk/publish/jaguar-dealers-in-for-a-messy-year-says-boss-rawdon-glover/307686">interview with Car Dealer Magazine</a>, Jaguar's managing director Rawdon Glover acknowledged some of the automaker's potential growing pains as it moves through this transitional phase.</p><p>"It will be difficult for this bit in the middle and probably in the early years while we're building up to the full range," Glover told the outlet. "We want people that are in it for the long term that absolutely understand the vision of Jaguar needing to change. They support the elevated positioning and everything else that goes with that because the level of service and even some of our business markets will be different."</p><p>As part of that elevated positioning, the newly announced Jags are expected to be significantly more upmarket than the ones that are being phased out, Car and Driver reported, citing a Range Rover from the brand's corporate cousin that costs around $400,000 as where the brand wants to be. (Most 2024 Jaguar models have list prices of around $50,000 to $80,000.)</p><p>Jaguar Land Rover and its parent company Tata Motors did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.</p>

On listing, Hyundai was valued at $18 billion, positioning it as one of India’s most valuable automotive companies. However, such high valuations often temper investor enthusiasm, resulting in more cautious short-term outcomes. <br /><br /> For most investors, the Price-to-Earnings (P/E) ratio is the most preferred parameter to gauge if a company is overvalued or undervalued. With a P/E ratio of 26.3, HMIL was priced significantly above the Indian automotive industry average of 24.4. <br /><br /> Globally, automotive companies operate with much lower P/E ratios, reflecting mature market conditions and slower growth trajectories. HMIL’s South Korean parent Hyundai Motor Company (HMC) trades at a meagre 3.07, believe it or not! This marks the third consecutive quarter where the smartphone maker has led the Indian smartphone market. Vivo’s shipments have increased by 20% year-on-year.<br /><br />Oppo is second, with a 13.9% market share in Q3 2024, up from a 9.9% market share in Q3 2023. The company’s shipments have increased by 47.6% year-on-year.<br /><br />Samsung, which led the Indian smartphone market in Q3 2023 with a market share of 16.2% has been pushed down to the third spot with a 12.3% market share. The company’s shipments have declined by 19.7% year-on-year.<br /><br />Other notable changes include the increase in Apple’s market share from 5.7% to 8.2%, a decline in OnePlus’ market share from 6.2% to 3.6% and a 149% year-on-year increase in shipments recorded by Motorola.<br /><br /><h2>5G shipments on the rise</h2>The share of 5G shipments increased to 83% in Q3 2024, up from 57% in Q3 2023. Of the 46 million smartphones shipped, 38 million were 5G smartphones.<br /><br />This has been fueled by the decline in the average selling price (ASP) of 5G smartphones. The ASP has by 20% to $292 (approx. ₹24,650).<br /><br />“Cyclical dip in demand after the festive period and high shipments in 3Q24 will result in higher stock levels across channels in 4Q24.
