The 10 biggest asteroids that pose a threat to Earth in 2020

<ul><li>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (<keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword>) has ruled out two potentially hazardous asteroids as a threat to Earth.</li><li>Asteroids 2010 CO1 and 2000 QW7, though large in size, are not a collision course for Earth.</li><li>But in little over a month, asteroid 1998 HL1 -- bigger than Burj Khalifa -- will be flying by.</li></ul>Two asteroids are coming awfully close the planet on 14 September 2019 but the Planetary Defence Coordination Office has ruled them out as a threat. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been tracking asteroid 504800 (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/The-10-biggest-asteroids-that-could-crash-into-Earth-in-2019/504800-2010-CO1/slideshow/70686170.cms">2010 CO1</a>) and 467317 (<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/The-10-biggest-asteroids-that-could-crash-into-Earth-in-2019/3467317-2000-QW7/slideshow/70686174.cms">2000 QW7</a>). Its calculations show that there is no chance of these space rocks posing a threat to Earth. These aren’t small asteroids either. The first space rock, asteroid 2010 CO1, between 120 meters to 260 meters in diameter. That’s bigger than the tallest statue on Earth — the Statue of Liberty in India. The second one, asteroid 2000 QW7, is even bigger with a diameter of 290 meters to 650 meters. Even China’s Shanghai Tower falls short at 632 meters, even though it’s the tallest building in the country and the third tallest in the world. But, in just a little over a month, there’s an even bigger asteroid heading Earth’s way. On 25 October 2019, an asteroid named <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/The-10-biggest-asteroids-that-could-crash-into-Earth-in-2019/162082-1998-HL1/slideshow/70686183.cms">162082 (1998 HL1)</a>, with its massive diameter of 440 meters to 990 meters, is scheduled to fly past the planet. The asteroid would be taller than the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, at its widest. Who’s got the speed? Asteroid 2010 CO1 is going to travelling at a speed of 51,696 kilometers per hour. But, asteroid 2000 QW7, will be slugging along at 23,112 kilometers per hour — less than half the speed of its counterpart. “Both of these asteroids are passing at about 14 lunar distances from the Earth, or about 3.5 million miles away, but small asteroids pass by Earth this close all the time,” said Lindley Johnson, a planetary defence officer for the Planetary Defence Coordination Office. October’s asteroid falls somewhere in between with a speed of 40,320 kilometers per hour but it will be twice as far away at a distance of 6.2 million kilometers. Earth is safe — for now NASA’s Asteroid Watch keeps an eye on all of these asteroids and has over 20,000 asteroids in its database. But only around 800 of these space rocks are actually considered to be ‘potentially hazardous’. If NASA does detect a change in their orbit at any time — and if that change poses a threat to Earth — it will flag it on the Torino scale. Depending on the threat level, the Torino scale measures the probability of an <keyword id="4678476" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Asteroid-hitting-Earth">asteroid hitting Earth</keyword> on a scale of 1 to 10.

The 10 biggest asteroids that could crash into Earth in 2019

<ul><li>There are over 800 objects in space that could pose a threat to Earth. </li><li>These are the some of the biggest asteroids that could possible hit the planet in 2019.</li></ul> At any given moment, there are hundreds of asteroids in our <keyword id="52393" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar-System">solar system</keyword> that could potentially crash into the Earth. Some scientists even think that it’s all but inevitable that an asteroid will collide with the planet eventually. In order to keep that from happening, the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Near Earth Orbit (NEO) Coordination Center and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) are keeping a close eye in the sky. They monitor the thousands of known asteroids and meteoroids, classifying a few hundred as an ’uncertainty’ or a ‘risk’ if it’s possible that could fall to Earth. As of August, the NEO Coordination Center had 20,502 asteroids on its list with 865 on the risk list. None of the space objects on these lists are anywhere nearly as big as the asteroid that wiped Earth of the dinosaurs but some of them are definitely big enough to wipe out whole cities. If they were to break through the planet’s atmosphere, the resulting destruction could be worse than the effects of a nuclear bomb explosion, according to NASA. Here are the biggest asteroids to watch out for in 2019:

Aside from the fact that there will be three asteroids gunning for the planet, it's even rarer for one to get this close. Most asteroids that approach the Earth are normally at least two million kilometers away. But 2019 RG2 will be a mere 524,000 kilometers away from our planet. Why size matters All three asteroids are extremely small. Asteroid 2019 QZ3 is the biggest of the three with a diameter of 38 meters, but that's only as big as the Lotus Temple in Delhi.

 2019 RG2, which will be the closest to Earth, is the smallest. It's only 11 meters in size — twice the height of an average human being. Fast and furious Because 2019 RG2 is so small, it will travel at extremely fast at speed of 79,164 kilometers per hour. This will make it the second fastest asteroid to fly past Earth in September — and even October and November. In comparison, asteroid RX1 will be travelling at nearly half the speed of 47,988 kilometers. 2019 QZ 3, the slowest of the three, will be at a mere 26,892 kilometers. The only asteroid that will be faster is the one scheduled to whizz past Earth on 24 September 2019 at a speed of 80,136 kilometers per hour. But it will be much further away — 4 million kilometers away. None of the three asteroids are on a collision course with Earth, as no alert has been issued by the Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). Nonetheless, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory classified them as ‘potentially hazardous' and put them on <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/asteroidwatch/">Asteroid Watch</a>. It’s a record day for asteroids as three of them plan to fly past Earth

A potentially hazardous giant asteroid is set to zoom past <keyword id="6359982" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="earth" source="Orion">Earth</keyword> with a 37,400 km/h speed on Thursday, according to <keyword id="6360409" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="nasa" source="Orion">NASA</keyword>. The asteroid, named 418135 (2008 AG33), has an estimated diameter between 350 to 780 metres, revealed NASA's <keyword id="13734975" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="centre-for-near-earth-object-studies" source="Orion">Centre for Near Earth Object Studies</keyword> (CNEOS). NASA defines any space object that comes within 193 million km of Earth as a "near-Earth object" (NEO) and any fast-moving object within 7.5 million km as "potentially hazardous". According to the Centre, as they orbit the <keyword id="24879" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="sun" source="Orion">Sun</keyword>, the NEOs can occasionally approach close to Earth. However, it explained that a "close" passage astronomically can be very far away in human terms: millions or even tens of millions of kilometres. Asteroid 418135 is thus expected to skim past our planet without any risk of impact, <keyword id="1274891" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="live-science" source="Orion">Live Science</keyword> reported. At its closest point, the asteroid, travelling at more than 30 times the speed of sound, will come within about 3.2 million kilometres of Earth, which is roughly eight times the average distance between Earth and the Moon. Asteroid 418135 was first discovered on January 12, 2008, by asteroid surveyors at the Mt. <keyword id="13734974" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="lemmon-skycenter" source="Orion">Lemmon SkyCenter</keyword> observatory in Arizona and last zipped past Earth on March 1, 2015, according to CNEOS. The asteroid swings by our planet roughly every seven years, with the next close flyby predicted to come on May 25, 2029. But it may not be the biggest space rock to hurtle past Earth. Another asteroid, named 467460 (2006 JF42) is touted to be the biggest so far to zoom past Earth, the report said. The space rock has an estimated diameter between 380 to 860 metres and will be travelling at roughly 40,700 km/h when it passes Earth on May 9. Several space agencies are already working on ways to possibly deflect asteroids flying straight at Earth. Last November, NASA launched a spacecraft as a part of its Double Asteroid Redirection Test mission, which plans to redirect a non-hazardous asteroid by ramming it off course. China is also in the early planning stages of an asteroid-redirect mission. By slamming 23 Long March 5 rockets into the asteroid Bennu, the country says it would be able to divert the space rock from a potentially catastrophic impact with Earth, the report said. <ul><li>All it would take is an asteroid as big as a house travelling at 48,000 kilometers an hour colliding into Earth to have an impact equivalent to the Hiroshima nuclear bomb blast.</li><li>Any asteroid larger than one kilometer in diameter would push up so much dust and debris that it could block out the Sun and initiate another Ice Age.</li><li>Space agencies are keeping an eye on <keyword id="3106647" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="near-earth-objects">Near Earth Objects</keyword> passing close to Earth but even their methods aren’t full proof.</li></ul>Movies like Deep Impact, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/RANKED-The-10-movies-that-are-going-to-dominate-the-box-office-this-summer/articleshow/52226358.cms">Armageddon</a>, and even the animated The Good Dinosaur paint a vivid picture of what it would be like if an asteroid actually hit Earth. And, while the movies might be fictional — the reality of hundreds of asteroids whizzing past the planet is not. The reports of asteroids bigger than the Pyramid of Giza and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/an-asteroid-nearly-half-the-size-of-mount-everest-might-be-on-a-collision-course-for-earth-in-less-than-a-year/articleshow/70698774.cms">half the size of Everest</a> passing by awfully close to Earth has gotten some scientists thinking that it’s only a matter of time before an asteroid will collide with the planet’s surface. And it only seems more likely since, despite the Center of Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) and the Near Earth Object Coordination Center (NEOCC), recently illustrated how their methodology isn’t full proof. An <a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/">undetected asteroid</a> dubbed 2019 OK missed crashing into Earth by a mere 73,000 kilometers on July 26 and space agencies didn’t know of it until the asteroid had already come and gone.

That means concrete buildings for at least half a mile around the impact site would be flattened and any city would face a grim fate.  Any asteroid that spans <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/how-large-asteroids-must-be-to-destroy-a-city-state-country-or-the-planet/articleshow/64806829.cms">more than a kilometer</a> in diameter can’t be comparable to any weapon that humans have created. The one million megatons of energy that would strike Earth will result in 10 times the damage from Hiroshima. And, like the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs, the dust and debris thrown back in the atmosphere would block out the sun. In case the asteroid lands in water instead of on land, the result wouldn’t be every different with tidal waves hundreds of feet high submerging whole coastlines. ‘The city killer’ asteroids The asteroid that snuck past Earth, 2019 OK, is between 57 to 130 meters in diameter making it as big as a second tallest statue in the world — the Spring Temple Buddha in China. And, it was travelling at a speed of 86,905 kilometers per hour when it whizzed past Earth. If the asteroid would have collided with Earth, it would have gone off like a nuclear weapon with the force of <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/07/26/it-snuck-up-us-city-killer-asteroid-just-missed-earth-scientists-almost-didnt-detect-it-time/">10 megatons</a> of TNT. When an asteroid of about the same size fell to Earth in 1908 — known as the <a href="https://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2008/30jun_tunguska">Tunguska Impact</a> — it leveled 2,000 square kilometers of forest in Siberia.

What happens when an asteroid actually hits Earth

<ul><li>Asteroid 2019 GT3 is going to fly past Earth on Friday at a speed of 49,000 kilometers. </li><li>The asteroid is about as big as a football stadium. </li><li>It's not on a collision course for Earth but is still one of the asteroids classified as 'potentially hazardous' by the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA). </li></ul>The Earth is under <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-is-asteroid-meteorite-and-meteor/articleshow/70654013.cms">constant threat</a> of asteroids but most fly past and don't actually hit the planet. Asteroid 2019 GT3 is one such asteroid that is 'potentially hazardous' but will be at least 7.5 million kilometers away from the Earth. Asteroid 2019 GT3 is a new addition to the NASA's <a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/">Asteroid Watch</a> only discovered earlier this year in April 2019. It's about as big as a stadium with a diameter between 170 meters and 380 meters. When it blasts past Earth on 6 September 2019, it will be flying at a speed of 49,000 kilometers per hour. "Potentially hazardous asteroids are currently defined based on parameters that measure the asteroid's potential to make threatening close approaches to the Earth," states the Center for Near Earth Object Studies "Specifically, all asteroids with a minimum orbit intersection distance of 0.5 [astronomical units] or less and an absolute magnitude of 22.0 or less are considered PHAs," it added. Asteroid's 'potential' for destruction There's no chance of Asteroid 2019 GT3 striking Earth. Even if it were to somehow be on a collision course for the planet, the asteroid wouldn't cause any kind of '<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/neil-degrasse-tyson-and-other-scientists-believe-asteroids-will-eventually-hit-earth/articleshow/70644547.cms">mass extinction</a>' but it would definitely take out a small city. Scientists believe that an asteroid impact would result in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/what-happens-when-an-asteroid-actually-hits-earth/articleshow/70732006.cms">'nuclear'-like winter</a> on the planet. It would only take an asteroid as big as a house travelling at 48,000 kilometers an hour to have an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-last-major-asteroid-to-hit-earth-destroyed-500-square-kilometers-and-it-could-have-been-much-worse/articleshow/70782507.cms">impact equivalent</a> to that of the Hiroshima bomb blast. By that comparison, Asteroid 2019 GT3 is bigger and faster. A 'potentially hazardous' asteroid will whiz past earth at 49,000 km/hr on Friday

And, it is faster than a bullet. The speed of an average rifle bullet is 3,276 kilometers per hour (kmph) but Asteroid 2019 SR8 will be flying at more than ten times that speed — at 35,350 kmph. Size matters On the one hand, Asteroid 2019 SR8 isn’t a very <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/the-10-biggest-asteroids-that-could-crash-into-earth-this-year/articleshow/70686096.cms">big asteroid</a>. It measures between 20 meters to 44 meters in diameter — that’s half the height of the Statue of Liberty. On the other, its closest approach to Earth will only be 5 million kilometers from the planet. This may seem like a large distance but it’s enough for NASA to classify the incoming asteroid as a ‘close approach’ or a ‘near-Earth object’. It’s one of the many Apollo asteroids — an asteroid that orbits around the Sun and the Earth — to come visit. Final impact Even though Asteroid 2019 SR8 will be under the close, watchful eye of NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), the probability of an actual <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/neil-degrasse-tyson-and-other-scientists-believe-asteroids-will-eventually-hit-earth/articleshow/70644547.cms">asteroid impact</a> is low. Asteroid flying faster than a bullet will shoot past Earth today

<ul><li>In a rare event, two asteroids are going to whiz past Earth within hours of each other. </li><li>They’re not the biggest objects on the Asteroid Watch List but they’re two of the closest asteroids to pass by the planet.</li><li>Asteroid 2019 OU1 will be a mere 1 million kilometers from the Earth’s core as it flies past Earth.</li></ul>Asteroids whiz past Earth on a regular basis but it’s rare to see two of them gunning for the planet on the same day. <a href="https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2019%20QS">2019 QS</a> will be the first asteroid to make an appearance today and it’s around the same size as Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio De Janeiro or the Japan Tsunamis that stretched to 40 meters high. It will be followed by another asteroid dubbed <a href="https://ssd.jpl.nasa.gov/sbdb.cgi?sstr=2019%20OU1">2019 OU1</a>, which is over twice the size of its partner — making it almost as big as a football field at 98 meters. Both of them are going to flying past Earth within a couple of hours of each other. Neither of these two asteroids are as huge some others which are going to fly past the planet this year. But, they’re still on National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) <a href="https://cneos.jpl.nasa.gov/ca/">Asteroid Watch List</a> of <keyword id="3106647" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="near-earth-objects">Near Earth Objects</keyword> (NEOs) that could pose a risk to the planet. That’s because they’re going to be flying in particularly close. It’s about the distance Most asteroids, regardless of size, are normally at least 3 million kilometers to the Earth’s core as they fly past. But 2019 QS, on the other hand, will come as close as 2 million kilometers. And, 2019 OU1 will be even closer — merely 1 million kilometers away. According to NASA’s Asteroid Watch, any NEO that’s within 7.5 million kilometers of Earth could be ‘potentially hazardous’. When space objects fly this close to the Earth, if external or internal factors were to change their trajectory even to a small degree — they could <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/a-city-killer-asteroid-got-scarily-close-to-earth-yesterday-and-astronomers-didnt-know-about-it-until-it-was-just-days-away/articleshow/70404032.cms">collide </a>with the planet.
