The company’s shares were trading at ₹49.9 at 10:44 a.m., on February 28. <div type="javascript" title="Custom" contenttype="Image"><cdata><![CDATA[]]></cdata></div> Future Retail has come on record to note that they have made a loss of ₹4,445 crore in the last four quarters. “Termination notices have been received for a significant number of stores due to huge outstanding debts, and we would no longer have access to such store premises. The company is scaling down its operations, which will help us in reducing losses in the coming months. The company is proposing to expand its online and home delivery business, to increase its reach to the customers,” the statement read. Media<a href="https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/future-retail-shuts-big-bazaar-as-reliance-industries-plans-takeover-122022800001_1.html"> reports</a> also suggested that Future Retail has shut down “most” of its BigBazaar stores since Friday last week. With this being said, the reports noted that Reliance Industries will open most of the 200 Future Retail stores as Reliance stores in the coming week. Ravi Singhal, vice chairperson of GCL Securities, told Business Insider that the fact that Reliance is getting closer to take over Future Retail’s business is coming up as a positive sign. However, he also pointed out that “there is a huge possibility that the Reliance and Future Group deal can come to an end after all legal processes [are] complete between Amazon, Reliance and Future.” “The most probable reason behind the rise of Future Retail stock is after the Reliance Industries rescue by taking over the operations of around 200 future retail stores and replacing them with its brand stores along with offering jobs to its employees. However, Amazon — which held about 3% stake in Future Retail through its 49% shareholding in Future Coupon — objected to the deal. The e-commerce giant had mentioned that as per their deal, Future Group was <a href="https://retail.economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/industry/amazon-future-coupons-deal-named-15-companies-as-untouchables/79053231">barred from selling </a>any of their assets to several companies, including Reliance. The US-based e-commerce giant also contended that it was left out of the loop while the deal was being cracked. The matter is currently being heard by Singapore International Arbitration Center (SIAC), Delhi high court as well as the Supreme Court of India. In a turn of events, India’s antitrust watchdog Competition Commission of India (CCI<a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/amazon-future-deal-cci-clears-the-way-for-reliance-acquisition-by-revoking-2019-deal/articleshow/88343227.cms">) revoked its clearance to Amazon’s 2019 deal</a> with Future Coupons and imposed a ₹200 crore fine on the US-based ecommerce giant for concealing the facts. Amazon does hold the right to dispute this verdict and reapply for the clearance. However, it is important to note that Amazon would have no share holdings in Future Coupon or Future Retail if CCI decides to not give green light to the deal. Secondly, the cash burn of the company has come down by a fifth on a pre-order basis. The company also claims to maintain an Net Promoter Score (NPS) — a metric that companies use to measure customer loyalty — at 88-points, he noted. “This unbelievable execution over the past few months has made it clear to investors that Zepto will be one of the winners in Indian Q-Commerce,” he emphasised. The company is also piloting several services to deliver coffee, tea and items from local cafes — termed as ‘Zepto Cafe’ — in under 10 minutes across selected areas in Mumbai. The company plans to scale this service, which is not a food delivery vertical as per Zepto, across India if the pilot is successful. Zepto was founded by Aadit Palicha and Kaivalya Vohra in April 2021, and it currently delivers 3,500 products across 11 cities in 10 minutes flat. These services are available in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ghaziabad and other cities. Zepto plans to start its operations in another dozen cities in the near future. “We not only want to just expand across the country but we also want to double down on the team we have built because frankly creating a $900 million company in nine month is an insane achievement. Frankly, the team has had everything to do with that,” Palicha told Business Insider. He noted that the company has already hired 1000 people across functions over the last few months and plans to hire another 1000 in the next one year. Big Bazaar rides on the vaccine buzzword for its latest campaign

 Future group had launched its digital wallet – Future Pay in October 2016 with loyalty programmes for consumers. It also has a feature called ‘Price Match’ where customers can compare prices of a product across all retail stores. If the lowest price is not what BigBazaar offers, it will adjust the amount and refund the consumer. However, the app has not made the splash it intended to. The Future Pay app on Google Playstore has around 10 million downloads. Unlike Paytm which processes payments across platforms with a single QR code, Future Pay does not offer cross-functionality as of yet, and can only be accessed at Future Group stores. The push for Future Pay comes at a time when the company is also focusing on a greater digital push. In January 2020, e-commerce giant Amazon signed a long-term business agreement with Future Group. As per the deal, Amazon will become Future Retail’s authorized online sales channel. It had already launched its online service with Amazon across 22 centres. The group’s <keyword id="6357823" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="big-bazaar">Big Bazaar</keyword> and FoodHall will also be available online, soon. The competition in the grocery and food retail segment is heating up. It’s not just the startups like BigBasket, Grofers, MilkBasket but also bigwigs like Amazon, Flipkart that are indulging in the sector. Another big threat comes from Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio which has already done a soft launch for JioMart – its online grocery retail offering. For the first quarter of the current financial year, DMart’s parent company Avenue Supermart has posted a 88% fall in profits from ₹334.59 crore to a mere ₹48 crore. DMart’s share price reflected the investors’ disappointment with a 4% fall on Monday (July 13). While DMart said that the company is less anxious now than it was during April 2020, analysts say the causes of worry are only beginning. The biggest of them is a challenge from Asia’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani. Higher costs at stores while customers head to kiranas One of Damani’s biggest advantages was the presence of DMart in Tier-II cities, reaching out to a larger market. But analysts at HDFC Securities believe that this very strength has turned into its weakness. “Higher exposure to some of the most impacted Indian districts and store closures in Apr (50% of network closed in Apr) manifested into a severe footfall loss, ergo revenue loss for D-MART,” said the report. DMart began with a single store in Mumbai’s Powai in 2002. Today, DMart is present in over 214 locations across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, NCR, Tamil Nadu, Punjab and Rajasthan. The higher number of stores also meant DMart had to incur higher allowances for staff (it offered a hardship allowance to employees) and also had to bear sanitization costs for the stores. DMart too acknowledged that ‘organized retail’ failed to mark during the lockdown as local kirana stores <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/jiomart-dunzo-swiggy-and-likes-want-to-ride-the-trust-earned-by-indias-kirana-stores-during-the-lockdown/articleshow/76826479.cms">came to the rescue.</a> The company said customers didn’t put ‘value’ as a priority during lockdown. “There is also a sales channel of traditional trade which is smart, agile and resourceful. India still has a strong and resilient network of small shops and neighbourhood stores. They came roaring back after the first 2 or 3 weeks of lockdown serving the needs of an anxious customer the way the customer wanted it - quickly over the counter or through home deliveries,” said the company in a regulatory filing. A bigger challenge if Reliance and Future Retail join hands DMart’s rise was credited to its ability to outbid kirana stores with heavy discounts powered by smart sourcing and it wooed middle class indians into organised retail. But now the question is – can he beat someone with deep pockets like Mukesh Ambani? If India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani decides to buy Future Retail and alongwith it will acquire the Bigbazaar chain of stores. Several of the states in which DMart is operational – Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, have once again enforced strict lockdowns. In addition, in certain cities authorities are once again insisting on selling only essential products. Hence our future revenues continue to remain uncertain,” said the company.

<ul><li>Spencer's is trailing behind <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">BigBasket</keyword> in terms of revenue, despite its heavy offline presence.</li><li>Revenue of Spencer’s was 30% less than online grocery delivery startup BigBasket in the financial year 2020.</li><li>BigBasket may record its best financial performance in 2021, whereas Spencer’s has reported a decrease in sales.</li></ul>The year 2020 has been a game changer for India Inc. in many aspects. From shopping to working, everything has taken a digital spin and the debate of ‘online vs offline’ has been getting much stronger. Thirty two-year old Spencer’s Retail, one of the prominent retail chains in India ⁠— owned by RP Sanjiv Goenka group ⁠— reported its annual financial report and it was a fairly decent one. The business was surely affected by the Covid-induced lockdown in the first quarter of fiscal year 2021 (FY21), but was flourishing the rest of the year. Yet, its revenue dipped 7% to ₹2,481 crore and losses widened to ₹163.8 crore. This really got us wondering how the company fares in comparison to other players in the grocery segment -- both online and offline. Online grocers are cumulatively the third largest player in the market behind DMart and <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword>, according to a report dated June 4 from the broking firm Motilal Oswal. BigBasket is the biggest of that lot. What’s more shocking is the fact that BigBasket, just 10 years old in the market, earns more revenue than Spencer’s. The comparison between BigBasket and Spencer’s may be of apples and oranges, but it is definitely an interesting one. The three-decade-old Spencer’s, which has a strong presence across 191 stores across 42 cities, earned almost 30% less than a decade-old online grocery business BigBasket in FY20. A scan of the last three financial statements (between FY18 to FY20) of the companies, revealed that this gap in revenue is not a new one. This trend is expected to be carried forward in FY21 as well, especially with the sort of growth BigBasket has witnessed last year. Being the biggest player in the online grocery space, the company has doubled its daily deliveries to 3 lakh compared to pre-Covid days. The company claims to have clocked a gross sale of ₹8,000 crore ($1.1 billion) in FY21. Though BigBasket is yet to report its financial statement for FY21, Business Insider has mailed the company seeking more details of their financial performance. It is expected to be the strongest one yet at least in terms of the revenue growth. No wonder, Tata Group was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/tata-tryst-with-e-grocery-starts-with-a-billion-dollar-acquisition-of-bigbasket-heres-why-it-could-be-a-sweet-deal-for-both/articleshow/81478849.cms">compelled</a> to acquire BigBasket in order to pursue its Super App dreams. Spencer’s, on the other hand, has reported receding revenue and widening loss during FY21. Though the company did test out a hybrid model by experimenting with online delivery in partnership with Dunzo and Uber last year, that doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference for the company either. Its revenue from sales (operating revenue) reported a 7% dip to ₹2,428 crore compared to ₹2,644.80 crore reported in FY20. Well, BigBasket is actually much worse than Spencer’s in terms of its losses. The company had been burning cash ever since its inception in 2011 and is nowhere close to profitability. Whereas, Spencer’s had hit profitability in FY19, but went back to reporting a loss soon after. According to stock broking house Motilal Oswal’s latest report on the retail segment, the online grocery segment has grown about 30 times over the last seven to eight years to reach $3 billion. Currently, India has about 154 million transacting households. Of which, 130 million are already using online grocery solutions, creating an addressable market of $293 billion. Historically, the e-grocery segment has garnered a single-digit share of the overall organised grocery market in India, but 2020 brought these online grocery solutions to the forefront as stepping out of the house was no less than a health hazard, due to the pandemic. Not only Spencer’s, but other traditional retail players like DMart and BigBazaar were compelled to take up an omnichannel approach and started taking online mode of ordering in partnerships with logistics and transportation players like Uber, Ola, Dunzo, Rapido and more. Source: JPMorgan While other entrenched players like Big Basket and Grofers, who have been around for much longer, still have 7-8 times more app downloads, the rise of JioMart in the last six months only reflects the speed at which Ambani has tried to push his <keyword id="436047" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ecommerce">ecommerce</keyword> dream. Since its launch, in every three downloads of any online groceries app, two of them have been the one from the house of Reliance Industries (RIL). <div type="image" title="Jiomart downloads." msid="79922658" hostid="261"></div> Even the mightiest need to hustle sometimes JioMart in India sees competition from many players who have existed and dominated the Indian e-commerce market for a long time – including the likes of Amazon and Flipkart. And so, as Ambani, Asia’s richest man, threw his hat into this ring, he decided to go all out: both in the big cities of India and beyond. JioMart operates with an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/heres-what-gives-jiomart-an-edge-over-its-competitors-according-to-goldman-sachs/articleshow/79054698.cms">omnichannel</a> flow where it has tied up with kirana stores (mom-and-pop stores) and also uses inventory from Reliance Retail outlets. Ambani’s e-commerce bet made a soft launch in December 2019 in select areas of Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Kalyan. But as the coronavirus lockdown began and the opportunities in e-grocery became more evident, JioMart was quick to act and expanded to over 200 cities. This fast growth across India has given JioMart an early-mover advantage in India’s smaller towns, say analysts at JP Morgan. Given the progress of JioMart in the first year, analysts at JPMorgan peg that Reliance’s e-commerce business may earn an annual revenue of over $59 billion and the net worth may hit $145 billion in the next ten years. A Goldman Sachs report from November 2020 had pegged this omnichannel capability ⁠— using different channels for distribution, both online and offline ⁠— as the reason for JioMart’s growth. “India has 10 million kirana stores, which account for 90% of grocery retail in the country. JioMart has already launched in more than 200 cities, leveraging Reliance Retail’s store network, with kirana partnerships across 20 cities,” said the Goldman Sachs report. JioMart is not just stretching far and wide, it’s also building strength via partnerships and acquisitions Ambani is not just going for geographic expansion but he is also on a spending spree to boost JioMart’s offerings to its customers. According to JPMorgan, JioMart’s stock keeping units (SKU) is only second to Big Basket. However, the comparison didn’t include players like Flipkart, DMart and other new entrants like Swiggy and Zomato. JioMart, with access to the deep pockets of one of the world’s richest man – Mukesh Ambani, has managed to successfully partner up with another of the world’s richest man – Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook pumped in $5.7 billion into Reliance Jio in April 2020, with WhatsApp’s integration with JioMart being a prime focus of the deal. It’s set to be a win-win for both Ambani and Zuckerberg – where Reliance can take advantage of WhatsApp’s 400 million user base to acquire more customers. On the other hand, WhatsApp Pay, Facebook’s debut in the payments segment, will benefit from integrating with JioMart for payments. Another early acquisition made by the company was that of the Mumbai-based Grab-a-Grub. In 2019, Reliance pumped in $15 million for 83% stake in the hyperlocal delivery startup. Reliance has also acquired online pharmacy company <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/with-reliance-buying-netmeds-and-pharmeasy-merging-with-medlife-amazon-and-flipkart-are-in-for-a-tougher-competition-than-they-would-like/articleshow/77625512.cms">NetMeds</a>, picked up a stake in online lingerie retailer Zivame, and online furniture retailer <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/reliance-retail-acquires-urban-ladder-for-182-crore-at-a-sixth-of-the-startups-peak-valuation-in-2018/articleshow/79230550.cms">Urban Ladder</a>, all of which could further bolster its e-commerce foothold.  eCommerce companies such as Amazon, Flipkart and <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> operate as marketplaces in India thus allowing any retailer or trader to sell goods on their platform. But companies such as <keyword id="64373" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shoppers-Stop">Shoppers Stop</keyword>, <keyword id="6398216" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tesco">Tesco</keyword>, <keyword id="6357823" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Big-Bazaar">Big Bazaar</keyword>, <keyword id="58448" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Reliance-Retail">Reliance Retail</keyword> and others work only with their chosen vendors, which makes them closed marketplaces. 
 
The two models of retail - online and offline - have different business models and cannot be looked upon with the same lens, said Aamir Jariwala, secretary, E-commerce Coalition of India, which represents firms such as YepMe, Ferns n Petals and IndiaMart, told the Economic Times. 
 Among all eCommerce companies, only <keyword id="6354743" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Amazon-India">Amazon India</keyword> supports opening up online retail to FDI. 
 <keyword id="113282" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Retailers-Association-of-India">Retailers Association of India</keyword> (RAI), a lobby organisation for companies such as Reliance Retail and <keyword id="44949" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Future-group">Future Group</keyword>, has demanded a clarification from the government about what constitutes a marketplace and sought status equivalent to their online rivals, as several large offline retailers, too, explore opening online fronts. 
 
Many of these online stores that could make use of foreign capital are demanding opening up India's ecommerce sector to 100% FDI. But the move is being opposed by larger online marketplaces such as Flipkart and Snapdeal. The government is hearing various retail industry representatives before framing its policy. 
 
While, traditional retailers such as Shoppers Stop and BigBazaar are putting up a united front with RAI. "A lot of our members are either already running or want to open online channels and get access to foreign capital. This ambiguity on 'retail marketplaces' creates a sense of risk," said Kumar Rajagopalan, chief executive at the lobby group. 
 
Offline retailers are also demanding that the government not differentiate within the retail sector by sales channel for drafting FDI regulations. "Creation of a policy on FDI just for online or offline retail is very myopic. It will create an imbalance in the sector," Rajagopalan said. 
 
Ecommerce firms argue that they will lose a good share of the market due to such policies. 
 
Nasir Jamal, secretary general at ECAI, said financial and strategic investors would flock to offline retail if the government equates online and offline retailers with respect to FDI. "Inventory-led ecommerce companies are facing a capital crunch, and are on the lookout for funds and they also need support," he said. 
 "Offline and online retail is converging and the government should precipitate this by having similar policies," said Nitin Gupta, CEO of <keyword id="1493567" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="PayU-India">PayU India</keyword>, owned by South Africa's <keyword id="1634215" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Naspers-Group">Naspers Group</keyword>. 
 
India's ecommerce trade accounts for 2% of the overall retail sector, which grosses over 31.7 lakh crore ($500 billion) annually. The country's online retail sector grew to $12 billion last year.
