But we will show the truth in public to everyone to see what bigbasket has become. And how a big billion dollar company sees an upcomer as a competition and trying to eliminate us with corporate bullying,” he wrote. BigBasket sent Daily Basket a cease and desist letter, asking the smaller company to take down its mobile app, stop all operations and also ‘pay their legal team ₹2 lakh to cover the legal notice’. BigBasket has also accused the six-month old startup for having copied its app and web interface. BigBasket runs a separate vertical called BBDaily for online milk delivery. BigBasket sues a bootstrapped startup for using the word basket in its name – startup calls the billion dollar company a bully

The local kirana store or India’s largest retail chain, all of them are keen on getting a piece of the <keyword id="1410674" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="online-grocery-delivery" source="Orion">online grocery delivery</keyword> market. DMart, for instance, has set up its app and pick-up centers for home delivery after handling its bulk delivery orders during the pandemic. Reliance Retail too stepped into this delivery business with its app, <keyword id="8506093" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jiomart" source="Orion">JioMart</keyword> with little success, though it has also invested in Dunzo. Time does matter When it comes to the delivery market, it’s not about what you deliver, how you deliver but it’s all about ‘when’ you deliver. Most of the online <keyword id="2709620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grocery-delivery" source="Orion">grocery delivery</keyword> hinges on timing which is why quick commerce companies are walking away with a lion’s share of the pie. “Grocery shopping in India’s major cities is set to undergo a never-seen-before tec(h)tonic shift led by quick commerce platforms,” said a report by JM Financial. Online grocery market has two segments -- quick commerce and scheduled e-grocery. Only Jiomart, Bigbasket and DMart are scheduled e-grocery stores, all the other platforms are in a race of quick delivery business. And the segment seems to be ruled by the ‘10-30-minute delivery’ offered by platforms like <keyword id="6358977" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy" source="Orion">Swiggy</keyword>, Blinkit, Zepto and Dunzo. Most of the retail chains who intend to deliver groceries however have a one-day lag period between order and delivery. Added to that, quick commerce platforms are addressing multiple consumer pain-points such as convenience, speed, curated assortment, value, and round-the clock standardized services. Online food ordering business is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/retail/news/grocery-business-is-like-poison-pill-for-zomato-after-failing-miserably-two-times-as-per-analysts/articleshow/92202068.cms">aiding growth in the e-grocery as well</a>. Customers who order food online for convenience, wider selection, discounts and standardized customer support are also likely to be more amenable to ordering grocery items online for the very same reasons. This opens up cross-sell opportunities for food-techs like Swiggy and Blinkit, which is merging with Zomato. Paan to curds - quick commerce delivers it all A February 2022 Survey by LocalCircles indicates that 71% of the households used q-commerce platforms to either order daily use items such as milk, bread, eggs, curd, fruits and vegetables, etc. They also ordered indulgence items such as soft drinks, ice creams, chocolates and paan. Though, only 29% of the surveyed households used q-commerce for ‘all their grocery’ purchases. For the bulk purchases however, the large format stores are still in the running as people are going to the stores. DMart is still aggressively opening stores in parts of the country to get back to pre-covid levels. “We believe it will look to accelerate store expansion and the benefit of recent expansion is yet to fully kick in – revenue intensity is lower than pre-Covid levels,” said analysts at ICICI Securities post its March quarter earnings. Redseer estimates the grocery market size in India was worth $620 billion in 2021, which is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8% over the next four years to reach over $850 billion by 2025. Quick commerce is all set for the long haul Quick commerce players are also vying for a bigger piece of the entire pie. The quick ordering might start with fresher foods like fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy and other ready-to-cook items; and also indulgence categories like chocolates, biscuits, snacking items, cold drinks, and tobacco. But it could extend to others too. “We also expect grocery staples, cooking essentials, medicines, baby and personal care, home care and pet care, amongst others, to pick up as consumers become more habituated to ordering through the platforms,” said the JM Financial report. Recently, Swiggy raised $700 million for quick-commerce grocery service Instamart. Zomato poured $150 million into quick commerce startup Blinkit. Zepto raised $200 million and lastly Reliance Industries also caught the quick commerce train by investing $200 million in Dunzo. This also means that competitive intensity is likely to be severe in the near term, between them and also with the big retailers. “Only those platforms that have very strong customer recall, robust back-end supply chain and/or strong balance sheet are likely to survive this battle of attrition,” said the report. JM Financial believes that quick delivery platforms have what it takes to disrupt the unorganized grocery market including neighbourhood kirana stores or even retail chains like DMart in large cities. Source: JPMorgan While other entrenched players like Big Basket and Grofers, who have been around for much longer, still have 7-8 times more app downloads, the rise of JioMart in the last six months only reflects the speed at which Ambani has tried to push his <keyword id="436047" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ecommerce">ecommerce</keyword> dream. Since its launch, in every three downloads of any online groceries app, two of them have been the one from the house of Reliance Industries (RIL). <div type="image" title="Jiomart downloads." msid="79922658" hostid="261"></div> Even the mightiest need to hustle sometimes JioMart in India sees competition from many players who have existed and dominated the Indian e-commerce market for a long time – including the likes of Amazon and Flipkart. And so, as Ambani, Asia’s richest man, threw his hat into this ring, he decided to go all out: both in the big cities of India and beyond. JioMart operates with an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/ecommerce/news/heres-what-gives-jiomart-an-edge-over-its-competitors-according-to-goldman-sachs/articleshow/79054698.cms">omnichannel</a> flow where it has tied up with kirana stores (mom-and-pop stores) and also uses inventory from Reliance Retail outlets. Ambani’s e-commerce bet made a soft launch in December 2019 in select areas of Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Kalyan. But as the coronavirus lockdown began and the opportunities in e-grocery became more evident, JioMart was quick to act and expanded to over 200 cities. This fast growth across India has given JioMart an early-mover advantage in India’s smaller towns, say analysts at JP Morgan. Given the progress of JioMart in the first year, analysts at JPMorgan peg that Reliance’s e-commerce business may earn an annual revenue of over $59 billion and the net worth may hit $145 billion in the next ten years. A Goldman Sachs report from November 2020 had pegged this omnichannel capability ⁠— using different channels for distribution, both online and offline ⁠— as the reason for JioMart’s growth. “India has 10 million kirana stores, which account for 90% of grocery retail in the country. JioMart has already launched in more than 200 cities, leveraging Reliance Retail’s store network, with kirana partnerships across 20 cities,” said the Goldman Sachs report. JioMart is not just stretching far and wide, it’s also building strength via partnerships and acquisitions Ambani is not just going for geographic expansion but he is also on a spending spree to boost JioMart’s offerings to its customers. According to JPMorgan, JioMart’s stock keeping units (SKU) is only second to Big Basket. However, the comparison didn’t include players like Flipkart, DMart and other new entrants like Swiggy and Zomato. JioMart, with access to the deep pockets of one of the world’s richest man – Mukesh Ambani, has managed to successfully partner up with another of the world’s richest man – Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook pumped in $5.7 billion into Reliance Jio in April 2020, with WhatsApp’s integration with JioMart being a prime focus of the deal. It’s set to be a win-win for both Ambani and Zuckerberg – where Reliance can take advantage of WhatsApp’s 400 million user base to acquire more customers. On the other hand, WhatsApp Pay, Facebook’s debut in the payments segment, will benefit from integrating with JioMart for payments. Another early acquisition made by the company was that of the Mumbai-based Grab-a-Grub. In 2019, Reliance pumped in $15 million for 83% stake in the hyperlocal delivery startup. Mukesh Ambani is taking e-tail by storm⁠ — JioMart already has more daily active users than BigBasket and Grofers

<ul><li>YouGov's latest report reveals that <keyword id="6357120" type="DEFINITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm">Paytm</keyword> and Big Basket are the most used apps for ordering essentials during the COVID-19 <keyword id="91743" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="lockdown">lockdown</keyword></li><li>Although people have engaged with delivery apps during this period, only half are satisfied with the online ordering experience.</li></ul>YouGov’s latest survey reveals that despite the lockdown and strict norms around social distancing, the majority of urban Indians (52%) are stepping out and buying essentials from local retailers and hypermarkets. 39% are getting it delivered locally by neighbourhood vendors. The survey was run among 1000 respondents from 14th- 17th April. Most people have used delivery apps to order essential supplies during the lockdown period and Paytm is the most used app for this purpose (39%), followed by Big Basket (21%) and Big Bazaar (18%). Although slightly late but Swiggy and Zomato have entered the fray, and one in six people admitted to using these apps for the delivery of necessary items (16% and 15%, respectively). Amazon Pantry (16%), Reliance Fresh (15%), Grofers (14%) and Dmart (14%) were some other popular channels of delivery. Comparatively, Flipkart Supermart (10%), Domino’s Pizza (7%), Milk Basket (5%), Nature’s Basket (4%) and Dunzo (3%) were less popular for ordering daily supplies. While people have indulged with delivery apps at some point during the lockdown, currently only one in five (20%) Indians are ordering essentials online through these apps. Residents in North India were more likely to say this- at 27%. Similarly, a higher number of tier-1 and tier-2 city residents are likely to order online through delivery apps as compared to tier-3 residents. Among the different age groups, people in their thirties (28%) are more likely than the rest to shop everything online. Even though Paytm emerged as the most used delivery app for essentials during the lockdown, when it specifically comes to those who are currently only ordering online, Big Basket takes the top spot (at 44%), followed by Paytm (34%) and Grofers (33%). The e-grocer is especially popular among respondents from tier I cities, with 58% saying they shopped from Big Basket during the lockdown. Paytm on the other hand, is more popular in tier-2 and 3 cities. The high volume of people stepping out to buy necessities or getting them delivered locally could be due to problems faced with online grocery shopping. Unavailability of goods is the top concern among buyers ordering essentials online (40%), followed by lack of variety as well as unusually long delays in deliveries (32% each). Some respondents experienced cancellation of their orders (22%), received partial deliveries (17%) and faced issues with order policies (16%). Few witnessed payment issues (11%) while few others received low quality products (10%). However, a quarter seem pleased with the experience and claim to have had no problems with their delivery. At an overall level, half the respondents are satisfied or very satisfied with the experience of ordering essentials online. One in six (16%), however, are either unsatisfied or very unsatisfied while a third (33%) are unsure of their experience. Unsurprisingly, satisfaction is higher among those who currently order online as compared to those who either step out or order essentials locally through neighbourhood vendors and this presents an opportunity for e-grocers to win these consumers by offering better service and experience. Speaking about this Deepa Bhatia, General Manager, YouGov India, said, “While the COVID-19 crisis has adversely impacted most businesses, it has also opened opportunities for some e-commerce players, especially those catering to the daily needs of people. Along with serving new customers, it is imperative to satisfy and retain the existing ones. In such an environment, it is important for brands to win consumers’ trust by understanding their needs and concerns, and then targeting them with the appropriate communication and marketing strategies.” Data collected online by YouGov Omnibus among 1000 respondents in India between 14th - 17th April 2020 using YouGov’s panel of over 6 million people worldwide. People are depending most on Paytm and BigBasket for ordering essentials during the Covid-19 lockdown

The government in states like Maharashtra, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Delhi have instructed schools, colleges and malls to remain shut till March 31. The government is also advising social distancing, with a lot of organisations asking its employees to work from home. The closure of malls, and with it, a lot of supermarkets, has led to a direct increase in the order of staples online. Much like the US and UK, that witnessed a huge surge in online orders for essentials, in India too, a lot of online marketplaces like BigBasket, Future Group and Grofers are witnessing an increase in demand, with most people ordering for staples. Supr Daily, that delivers daily essentials like milk, bread, fruits and vegetables, told its customers that it will deliver till 9 a.m. instead of the usual 7 a.m. due to increased demand. In the past few days, BigBasket has witnessed a 2X increase in its traffic and its revenue. BigBasket said in a statement that they are witnessing a 15-20% increase in the basket value. Increased demand has been for essentials such as staples, atta &amp; dal, fruits, and vegetables. However, it said that it is in control of the supplies, given that a predominant share is from its private label products. The platform is currently not facing any shortage for FMCG branded products except in the case of sanitisers. In the last 30 days, as per Google Trends, there has been a rise in web search for sanitisers.

 A spokesperson from the Future Group that owns Big Bazaar and Easyday reported a similar increase in their online orders. "We have seen an upswing in the demand for daily essentials from our customers in certain geographies. We are making sure that we are managing our stocks and supply chain in a way that meets all our customer needs. We are also following and complying with various government/local body directives related to store operations.” While there were a lot of instances of hoarding in the US and UK with a lot of essentials being sold out quickly, most of these platforms haven’t witnessed hoarding yet. BigBasket said, “We are not witnessing hoarding behavior thus far. To our customers, our stance will be not to panic and buy more than what they need. We will gear up for the increased demand and availability of products will not be an issue.” In a note on its website, Grofers asked its consumers to avoid hoarding. “Buy what you need and maybe add some cushioning on top as we will keep working hard to keep items in stock and reasonably priced for all our customers. Excessive buying or multiple orders to bypass inventory limit can lead to order cancellation,” its blog read. Grofers has disinfected its warehouses and is sanitising on a daily basis to keep the inventory virus free. Telling us more about the spike in their business and safety precautions, Albinder Dhindsa, Co-Founder &amp; CEO, Grofers, said, “Over the last couple of days, we have seen customers buying items on our platform in large quantities across cities as well as categories. Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Ahmedabad have seen a higher surge with nearly 80% growth followed by Delhi NCR and Hyderabad at a 60% spike in business. We have seen a rise in both the number of orders (45%) as well as order value (18%). Personal hygiene products, followed by floor cleaners have seen a surge in demand along with immunity-boosting products such as chyawanprash and honey. Essential items such as atta, dal and rice are also being bought in large quantities by our customers." Grofers has suspended travel between locations and offices, so each of its 20+ units across the country can stay isolated and clear of the virus. Its supplies are now passing through separate areas, manned by different personnel than those that work in crowds in store. The crates are also being washed and disinfected after every usage. However, a lot of delivery partners are hesitant to come to work. With higher demand and lack of resources, there is a delay in delivery. It is currently 3 days in Delhi and less than 2 days in most other cities. In such a scenario, it is advisable to plan your groceries in advance and avoid dealing in cash as it can be a possible source of transmitting the virus. A spokesperson from Big Basket said that they are working to expedite their product deliveries. “We will face some constraints for a few more days because it takes time to build capacity in terms of storage, delivery fleet and people. Our teams are working hard to streamline this and we will be back on track very soon.” Some platforms have been kind enough to provide essentials at a price lower than its usual market rate. For example, Grofers is selling N95 face masks at Rs 90, when the general market prices are in the range of Rs 450-500.

As malls shut down, online grocery stores in India see a surge in demand

However, for daily essential vegetables, the new age Indians are paying a premium. And the clever Indian knows that buying vegetables online has its own convenience. Not only are the products available ‘claimed’ to be superior in quality but also packed and diced. 
 "We are trying to make it as easy as possible," <keyword id="6379851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hari-menon">Hari Menon</keyword>, co-founder and CEO of <keyword id="964794" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="BigBasket">Bigbasket</keyword> told the <keyword id="6474066" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="economic-times">Economic Times</keyword>. "From scientific packaging that keeps veggies and fruits fresh to no questions-asked returns, thoughtful initiatives by e-grocers are enticing many to give up age-old habits such as bargaining with vendors and snapping an okra into half to check for freshness." 
 
If statistics of the online grocery company is to be believed, around 70% of Bigbasket's daily orders contain fruits and vegetables. This is a vast improvement over last year when fresh produce did not contribute much to an e-grocer's topline. 
 "When we started selling greens on our website, our primary challenge was assuring the user that despite not touching or feeling the vegetables, they should have confidence in buying from us," <keyword id="2744778" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Albinder-Dhindsa">Albinder Dhindsa</keyword>, co-founder of <keyword id="2466939" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Grofers">Grofers</keyword>, told the ET. 
 "Starting November, we will introduce a quality score on all fruits and vegetables bought through us and our vendors will have to adhere to it," adds <keyword id="478511" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="dhindsa">Dhindsa</keyword>. 
 While convenience and quality are primarily responsible for this leap in vegetable sale of the online grocers, it is also noted that Indians are experimenting with food like never before. Now they have requirement of items that the street vendor can’t procure or are too over-priced. “Daily consumables are shaping up to be one of our largest categories... Though, the average sale price od a product is low, it has been anticipated by the analysts, that the category will be useful as it will help Amazon India boost repeat purchase and loyalty among regular online shoppers, whom the company is targeting through its Prime subscription service launched in July. 
 
"Amazon will look to acquire the top 50-60 million of existing online customers who are spending very frequently online through services like Prime, which will be the first leg of their strategy," <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Satish+Meena&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Satish Meena</a>, an analyst at <keyword id="151787" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Forrester-Research">Forrester Research</keyword> told ET. 
 
In volumetric terms, the company’s fast moving consumer goods business has grown by about 200% year-on-year, by the end of August. "Amazon.in has witnessed strong growth in the category from tier-II and tier-III cities, with nearly 50% of the orders coming from outside the top eight cities," a spokeswoman for Amazon India told ET. 
 
Pantry' product were introduced in Hyderabad this week by Amazon. The customers can select grocery and household essentials to be packed into boxes of up to 15 kg for home delivery the next day, with a shipping charge of Rs 20. Though, it is currently free for Amazon Prime subscribers. 
 "We see a very high degree of repeat usage and very big basket sizes that customers are shopping for," <keyword id="781" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Agarwal">Agarwal</keyword> added.

During its first quarter (April-June) earnings report, Reliance had said that JioMart clocked big numbers during the lockdown – over 400,000 orders on a single day. In the second quarter, the company said that JioMart continues to scale-up rapidly with a consistent increase in daily customer orders. By Sukanya Mohapatra Mumbai, Apr 17 () The national lockdown from March 25 to combat the Covid-19 pandemic left the ready-to-cook and snacks category reeling as curbs on the movement of goods and economic activities led to supply chain disruptions and caused massive production losses, posing hurdles for all stakeholders including consumers.The government has extended the three-week lockdown by another 18 days to May 3, to arrest the spread of the deadly Covid-19 pandemic that has taken close to 1.46 lakh lives globally, including close to 440 in India.The Centre, meanwhile, has eased some curbs by issuing revised guidelines to enforce lockdown 2.0 -- allowing movement of all types of goods, essential and non-essentials, among several other relaxations. Lack of employment and the resultant pains in continuing to live in cities have created a crisis of reverse migration as millions of daily wagers returned to their homes, bringing down production in many sectors, including FMCG companies.Unofficial estimates say nearly half of the over 14-crore migrant workers have left for their homes and are unlikely to return soon."Since the lockdown, our manufacturing has come down to just about 15-20 per cent as our workforce mainly comprises migratory workers, who have left for their homes. We are manufacturing with only 15-20 per cent manpower, those staying nearby," Krishnarao Buddha, senior category head at Parle Products, told .This has also caused a breakdown in supply chain as well and it has become a huge challenge to send supplies to distributors in the absence of truck drivers, he adds.Snacks and condiments are very much in demand and needed in families especially with children or senior citizens."The ready-to-cook, snacks and condiments makes it easy for people who are working from home and have children and senior citizens to take care. Same is the case with bachelors/students. Therefore, this category should have been in the essential goods list," he opined.CG Corp' executive director Varun Chaudhary said since the lockdown was declared unexpectedly almost all FMCG companies are facing distribution challenges. The company sells instant noodles under the Wai Wai brand."As state-to-state procedures are different, inter-state transportation is restrictive," he said."We are trying to distribute in as many cities and localities as possible by following regulations. Within each state, in certain cities we are getting permission to distribute but in some cities it is still a challenge," he stated.Shortage of trucks and drivers is another challenge as many trucks were stuck at various check-points and interstate borders, he said."We had a good amount of stocks with our distributors. And now we are ramping up our efforts to replenish the stocks. Factory dispatches have improved in the past few days and we have been able to dispatch sizable stocks since then. We are also present on e-commerce platforms like Big Basket and Grofers. We are in the process of widening it further," he added.With some relaxations announced from April 20 for manufacturing outside cities, he hopes supplies will improve over time."But for complete normalcy, we will have to wait. But with gradual improvement we will be better placed to meet demand. E-commerce players like Bigbasket and Grofers, essentially servicing groceries, are ramping up their manpower, which should help fill the gap between demand and supply. Non-traditional groceries e-commerce platforms are tweaking their operations for this," he said.He said FMCG companies are grappling with operational challenges and are under continuous pressure due to several factors like under-utilisation of capacity due to shortage of workforce along with incurring extra transportation cost due to hindrance in movement."However, with the revised guidelines from April 20, it is expected that we will overcome the problems of transportation to some extent, which will help ease in supply of our products," he added.Meanwhile, Navin Tewari, CEO of Capital Foods that offers desi, Chinese and condiments under Ching's Secret and Smith &amp; Jones brands, is expecting a V-shaped recovery if the lockdown is lifted on May 3."Some pockets are already showing an uptick in demand. Typically, aata, daal and chawal are looked upon as basic food items but noodles, pasta, snacks, and schezwan chutney have become equally mainstream. We have already seen a 50 per cent increase in demand for such products in some cities. We see good demand from eastern and northern states. But not elsewhere barring Bengaluru where we are seeing substantial growth in demand," he added.He said the company is getting a very strong connection with neighbourhood stores who are catering to consumers particularly in the North and in the West. In 2020, rural markets outperformed urban India and became critical for FMCG giants. Brands relied on rural markets to drive growth during the trying times. FMCG witnessed a double digit growth of 10.6% in Q3’20 in Rural India, while the bigger cities (&gt;1 Lakh population including metros and Town Class 1) played catch-up. The rural markets bounced back in Q3 handsomely on the back of support provided by the government as well as good agriculture, reverse migration and a lower unemployment rate. With immunity being the focus in the ‘new normal’, new launches have been made in the health and hygiene basket including categories like hand sanitisers, floor cleaners, toilet cleaners, antiseptic liquids. These new launches contributed to 37% (in value) of all new launches in the COVID period (Nielsen India). I feel, the months in lockdown have only strengthened that introspection and has further fueled the young consumers’ move towards purpose and value, making them think-twice before buying by taking in to consideration the long-term impact of their spends not only on their finances, but on their own beliefs, on society and on the planet. So, with conscious consumption here to stay, when consumers buy, it is going to be as much for brand values as it is for product payoff. Keeping this in mind a big communication trend I see emerging as we move into 2021 is brands engaging more purposefully with deeper more sentient conversations. These could include brands talking about their environmental and sustainability efforts, community initiatives, health impact and most importantly value addition. Fortunately for us this is not a shift to adapt to; but a way of operating. We have always believed in empowering, enabling and operating consciously. Hence, it’s not only our communication like our recent Park Avenue Germ Protect soap film about our protagonist helping his community but at every level we are constantly taking steps to enhance efficiencies for a better world like our soon to be launched sustainable and eco-friendly packaging.
