India, home to the second largest population in the world, also stands second in food production globally. It has been a long journey for the nation to turn into a food-surplus country from that of a food-deficit one in 1960. But in spite of its current elevated status, India is still the HUNGER capital of the world. Nearly one-fourth of its 1.2 billion population sleep hungry owing to the enormous wastage of food in the country.

But in spite of those efforts, food worth over Rs 50,000 crore (both perishable and non-perishable) lands up in <keyword id="56059" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Garbage">garbage</keyword> dumps instead of feeding the hungry mouths. This, in turn, greatly affects people living below the poverty line and pushes them closer to death due to starvation. 
 
India’s Green Revolution has paid rich dividends in the form of increased food production. The series of research, development and technology transfer initiatives that occurred between 1940s and 1960s boosted agriculture production worldwide, especially in the developing countries. This initiative was spearheaded by eminent Indian geneticist Dr MS Swaminathan who, together with his team, worked to raise wheat production in India by increasing high-yielding wheat varieties. 
 His resolve to end hunger came after witnessing the Great Bengal famine of 1943, when he was a student at the University of Kerala. Following the death of 3 million people who died in this famine due to acute rice shortage, US-educated Dr Swaminathan took up a role with the <keyword id="44734" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Indian-Government">Indian government</keyword> in 1954 and worked to increase wheat and potato yield by developing new strains of food grains and vegetables with high-yield patterns suitable for the unpredictable Indian monsoon. 
 
After the results started showing, India moved from a nation that depended on other countries to satiate its hunger to food self-sufficiency through sustainable development. Even now, the major focus is on food security, along with the preservation of biodiversity. 
 Although this strategy has yielded excellent results, the fact that India has not set up an efficient food management system has been a major blow to its <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword>. Every few months, food prices spiral out of control while <keyword id="67286" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Food-inflation">food inflation</keyword> had also destabilised governments. In the recent months, food <keyword id="22195" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Inflation">inflation</keyword> has remained stubbornly high, with the wholesale inflation of food clocking 18.2%. 
 
This is mainly due to the failure to preserve whatever the country produces through its diverse agricultural systems. A predominantly agrarian economy, India has been a rather subdued player when it comes to exporting fruits and vegetables. A cold-chain infrastructure to preserve the produce is the crying need of the hour. However, successive governments have failed to address this problem efficiently. 
 
Reasons for this are many. Dedicated road and rail connectivity to transport food grains, fruits and vegetables is poor. International players do see an opportunity here, but not many of them are willing to enter the market owing to the absence of uniform policies across states that produce specific yields in high quantities. 
 
Although the government has been making efforts to control food wastage by carrying out capacity-building exercises in India, the attempts have fallen miserably short of the overall requirement. 
 
The country throws away fresh produce worth Rs 133 billion as adequate cold storage facilities for preserving food grains and vegetables do not exist here. India has about 6,300 cold storage units, spread rather haphazardly across the states, to preserve 30.11 million metric tonnes of food. But that is just half of what the country needs to save its produce of 61 million metric tonnes. To create an infrastructure of this scale and keep up with the current food production, the country requires an investment of Rs 550 billion by or before 2014-15. 
 
While all this is about fresh produce, the extent of cooked food being wasted on various occasions is simply mindboggling. For instance, Bangalore, known as the IT capital of India, wastes about 943 tonnes of high-calorie quality food every year as the city hosts nearly 1 lakh marriages annually. The city alone contributes to the wastage of Rs 339 crore as far as food is concerned. 
 With the country expecting a record food grain output of 259 million tonnes this year alone, the food may well land in garbage heaps and rot in warehouses unless the government increases the efficiency of its public distribution system (PDS), which reaches the poorest of the poor through its agencies. However, the country, which has seen consistent growth in <keyword id="35050" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="gdp">GDP</keyword>, must also realise the need to protect its food grains from landing up in dumps.

<ul><li>The usual fervor of the Big Fat Indian Summer weddings have given way to downsized miniature ceremonies this year.</li><li>However, the global pandemic hasn’t affected Indians’ love for weddings. </li><li><keyword id="3237946" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sandeep-Lodha">Sandeep Lodha</keyword>, CEO, OYO’s Weddingz.in voiced his optimism for the recovery of the sector. </li><li>He spoke to us about the brand's journey, COVID-19’s impact and projections for 2021 and how they are sticking to their idea of togetherness in times of social distancing. </li></ul>It was at a wedding that Sandeep Lodha, CEO, OYO’s Weddingz.in conceived the idea of starting a brand that could cater to the rising need for professional and organised wedding-related venue and non-venue requirements for the new-age, tech-savvy consumer. The idea was simple. Lodha wanted his Weddingz.in to be a one-stop-shop that enables the promise of a great event at guaranteed best prices and allows the bride and groom to focus on their dream wedding and not worry about mundane tasks. Walking us behind the idea that led to Weddingz.in, Lodha shared, “It all started in 2015, while I was attending a relative’s wedding. I realized that the Indian <keyword id="562840" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="wedding-industry">wedding industry</keyword> hadn't changed at all since 1999 when I got married. In fact, it was still very fragmented and disorganized, in terms of promises made by vendors vis-a-vis lack of delivery, which became one of the biggest pain points for to-be-weds as well as their families. I realised among all services, the largest investment or budget was allotted to venues alone, and poorly managed catering, sound, decor, among other elements threw a spanner in the works for the couple on their big day.” He saw an immense opportunity to organise the wedding sector with technological solutions, and he believes that the wedding industry still has a long way to go as an average Indian parent spends about one-fifth of the wealth accumulated in his/her lifetime on their child’s wedding. According to a KPMG report, India’s current wedding market is at $50 billion, growing rapidly every year. In 2018, Weddingz.in was acquired by OYO and has grown leaps and bounds since. As per Lodha, Weddingz.in is the largest wedding company in India that offers venue and non-venue wedding-related services. “Within the first year of acquisition, we scaled great heights. Just last year (2019), we executed over 27,000+ events and just before the pandemic-led nation-wide lockdown, we executed 4,000+ successful events in February 2020,” said Lodha. From the 'big-fat Indian wedding' to 'small is the new big' The big-fat Indian wedding industry in our country has never seen a recession period. However, 2020 has been an unusual period for businesses of all shapes and sizes, as well as economies of scale. Weddings that last usually for 4-5 days in India, had to be cut down to only include the main wedding day and ‘small is the new big’ emerged as the biggest trend of the year in the industry. Until early September, weddings were not a grand affair -- the overall spending on elements such as photography, food, decoration, etc also dropped with the number of people. In March 2020, Weddingz.in also saw its revenue dip by 90% but in the same quarter, things started looking up. Telling us how the 5-year-old brand tried to minimise COVID’s impact, Lodha said, “With restrictions on large social gatherings and events including wedding ceremonies, the pandemic has changed the wedding landscape in India. In the initial phase of the lockdown, customers were holding back. During this time, in light of the situation, we offered our existing customers the option of free rescheduling and offered potential value-based packages inclusive of venue, photography and makeup, among others. Owing to this flexibility that we offered our customers, the majority of them chose to reschedule their events, as opposed to cancelling them. Owing to our efforts, in Q1 itself, over 3000+ summer weddings were rescheduled for the latter half of the year, specifically, October-November-December 2020.” Weddingz.in launched a program called ‘Wz Safe’ with a 20+ point checklist to ensure social distancing, hygiene and sanitation across venues and win its audiences’ trust. It also offered flexibility to reschedule events free of charge. During the lockdown, it launched a multi-video conferencing platform called ‘Next Gen Weddingz’, with an emcee and multiple chat rooms. It also allowed the virtual attendees to interact so that they feel as much a part of the celebrations. As of today, the government allows 50-200 guests at the wedding. Weddingz.in’s partners are also scaling their operations by embracing the digital world. “These efforts also enabled our venue partners with online demand during such ‘socially distant’ times. For instance, we’re extremely glad to share that some of our Weddingz.in venue owners that leveraged our online platforms saw approximately 50-60% demand levels, thereby making operations feasible and enabling them with the necessary cash flow to sustain expenses towards rentals, etc. In my opinion, in a way, the pandemic is an accelerant, leading to the ‘digitization’ of events, a trend that we would have seen maybe 5-10 years from today. Since couples are trying to avoid running about and meeting the multiple vendors to fulfil their requirements, there was an uptick in demand for one-stop-shop online solutions that offered packages with all services,” said Lodha. Adding on how the lockdown period accelerated Weddingz.in to become a digital-led company, Lodha said, “This (lockdown period) really pushed us to re-think and accelerate our pace of innovations for sustainable and long-term health of the business. We decided to move on from being a tech-enabled organisation to a tech-driven/led company. Through a three-pronged approach to resurrect, win customer confidence and build for the future, combined with the steady relaxation of government restrictions, as of today, we have been able to reach 75-80% demand of pre-covid levels and believe this will continue to grow month-on-month in 2021.” Trends in 2020 and 2021 Brides and grooms are now taking the punt to travel to a different state and have their dream weddings with a smaller group of people. Commenting on the trends that emerged during 2020, Lodha shared, “We’re seeing an upswing in inquiries/demand for destination weddings - couples are opting to tie the knot across exotic locations like palaces, beach-side venues, outdoor farms or even in-city affordable resorts. Preference for open-air lawns or alternatively, booking hotel banquets twice the size for a much safer and socially distanced wedding are also on the rise. Another trend that’s definitely on the rise is live streaming of events for virtual guests/attendees. As couples are also increasingly opting for one-stop-shop solutions to avoid running about and meeting the umpteenth number of vendors to fulfill all their requirements. And of course, if there’s one thing in demand more than others, it has to be a lot of stress on hygiene-focused efforts.” According to Lodha, the wedding industry could roughly be at 35% of pre-covid levels in 2021 if three factors go in their way: the scale of weddings, number of events per wedding and guestlist increase. Lodha explained, “While things are almost there, we are already at 75-80% of pre-covid level demand. Some clients still continue to postpone their events but most are now taking the punt and going ahead with it. Secondly, the customer’s willingness to go ahead with pre-wedding ceremonies like Sangeet, Mehendi, Haldi etc. will help the industry bounce back sooner and steadily. In the short term, small and intimate functions may take place, however, large scale events will take time to make a comeback. For the winter wedding season, we saw a rise in guestlist (depending on region-wise relaxation of restrictions). But as you know, if cases continue to rise, the guestlist may shrink again. We feel as long as Covid is here to stay, the guest list will continue to remain small compared to pre-covid days, but with an upward trend as customers get accustomed to the new normal.” Vision for the brand Weddingz.in is now aiming to be there for its customers from the beginning of their planning and become the most sought after tech-led platform. It is betting big on tech and customer experience-driven path to recovery. “As we enter a new decade, for our customers, we want to be the most sought after platform for weddings in India. We want to truly become a one-stop-shop for all our customer’s requirements and continue delivering on our promise of a 100% great event. To do so, we will enable customers with our technology to plan their wedding right from the beginning. From the traditions and generous hospitality to the beautiful saris and spicy flavour, Matesca revealed that she’d not only loved every bit of it, but realised that she was having an experience of a lifetime. 
 
As of today, their website offers tickets to 10 weddings- which include ones in the Indian cities of Udaipur, Mumbai, Haridwar and Indore. Once you buy a ticket to attend the wedding of a particular couple, they will nominate a family member to act as a guide for the travellers and explain them the rituals while taking them through the event. Tickets to these weddings start from $300 (roughly Rs 20,000). 
 
One such couple selling tickets for their wedding on the website is Rajasthani couple Lavina Purohit and Abhishek Paliwal. The Bengaluru-based software engineers are all set to be married in traditional ceremonies that will be held in Udaipur and Indore over a span of four days in January, next year. 
 
 
 
The duo are offering 10 two-day tickets to either city for $400 (about Rs 27,000) and 10-four day passes to the entire wedding celebrations in both the cities, which includes all forms of transportation for $550 (Rs 37,000) 
 
Additionally, the website also offers bookings for weddings in Russia, Hungary and Turkey, though the company is clear that is India that they want to focus on. 
 
The reason being that when it comes to cultural experiences, nothing beats weddings, especially the ones in India- with their rituals and grandeur, said Parkanyi. 
 
Apart from selling tickets to foreigners, the website also allows couples to crowdfund their wedding by registering online and asking their friends and families to chip in for their big day. 
 
Until now, the trio has bootstrapped and built JoinMyWedding.com without any external funding. The idea is to raise money through the 15% commission they charge on the sale of tickets and the flat <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=crowdfunding&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">crowdfunding</a> fee. The team has also tied up with Indian travel agents in order to host more weddings on the website and also, spread the word around. 
 
 
 
India reportedly sees 10 million weddings each year, all of them much more lavish than the previous one and opening up one’s wedding could also help in lightening the financial burden, though on the other hand, it could also make it a much more commercial occasion than a personal event. 
 
Regardless, there’s no doubt that there exists a sizeable market for such a service to work in the country.

Indian weddings so foreigners can truly experience them

<ul><li>The Indian government is currently looking into counter UAV measure to take down 'rogue' drones. </li><li>Even though there are guidelines in place, the government doesn't have a mechanism in place to tell good drones from 'rogue' drones. </li><li>Nearly 50,000 drones in the Indian airspace are flying without meeting the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR). </li></ul>It's not rare to find illegal drones <a href="http://www.micetalk.com/editions/2017/MTJul17.pdf">filming Indian weddings</a> or social events across the country. But the big, fat, Indian wedding may have to wait with the government mulling over options to counter unlicensed drones in India's airspace. "We don't know which drone is rogue and which is good. We should have technology to counter it. Whether you go in for commercial or security purposes, the technology has to be such which can prevent the <keyword id="6039791" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="rogue-drones">rogue drones</keyword> in our country," Rakesh Asthaana, Director General, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) said. "We have taken the live trials; second pilot has just been completed and we are in the process of finalising our reports which we will be submitting to the ministry soon," Asthaana shared. Before the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/flying-drones-is-finally-legal-in-india/articleshow/65573434.cms">drone guidelines</a> were implemented in India, there were around 50,000 drones operating in its air space, according to a report by FICCI and E&amp;Y. Even though these drones were flying around, almost none of them meet the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) and aren't compliant with the no-permission no-take off (NPNT) mandate. So there's no way to stop them even if they're spotted flying against the law. Social 'rogue' drones It's not just weddings that are in question. The risk is greater when the event in question is on a bigger scale — like the Kumbh Mela were <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/allahabad/1-4-crore-people-take-dip-as-kumbh-mela-begins/articleshow/67543932.cms">140 million</a> people were taking a dip in the Ganga this year. At the same time, there was a <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/news/india-kumbh-mela-2019-isis-issues-threats-of-chemical-attack-ndrf-conducts-mock-drill-499659">terrorist threat</a> at large. A disruption from a 'rogue' drone at this time can potentially result in severe damage, according to the report. It also highlights that India more vulnerable to collateral damage because of its high population density of 411 persons per square kilometer. Drones, which can be controlled wirelessly, can be controlled from anywhere within a 13 square kilometer area — larger than an Indian city suburb. So, that makes tracking the person controlling the drone difficult to track down. Irresponsible 'rogue' drones The threat of drones isn't only to people on the ground but also to other vehicles that share the same air space. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) estimates that India's aviation industry will continue to grow at a rapid pace. As of March 2019, India had 103 operation airports with India planning to hit 190 to 200 airports by 2040. The increasing amount of aircraft means there more air traffic for drones to be wary of. Irresponsible or mistaken 'rogue' drones can increase the risk faced by flights. CAR can't stop 'rogue' drones The first official notice to ban the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the Indian air force was issued back in 2014 by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). But, despite the notice it was difficult to actually enforce the ban. India's geographical vastness limits the ability of the government to monitor flights of these 50,000 'rogue' drones that aren't registered with the authorities. And, that's where counter unmanned aerial system (cUAS) technology comes in. Traditional methods like anti-aircraft radars don't generally pick up on drones because they have been designed to detect large metallic object that move fast. Drones, on the other hand, move slower and fly lower. The first step is normally to mandate no-fly zones, which is something the Indian government has already implemented with the green, amber and red zones. The NPNT process ensures that drones are automatically directed back to their home location before they actually enter a fly zone. But, a complete cUAS system has to be capable of detecting, tracking as well as intercepting drones. "If we can manufacture world class drones within the country, we can obviously manufacture world class <keyword id="7937097" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="counter-drone-measures">counter drone measures</keyword>. Otherwise what will happen is dependence on global market will continue for the anti-drone measures as it is for drones currently," shared Sanjay Jaju, Joint Secretary in the Department of Defence Production at the Ministry of Defence.

Smaller online startups catering to weddings have also dabbled with the idea of gift registries although it’s yet to take off on a large scale in India. “The Indian wedding market is slated to be a $50 billion market while the gifting industry is set to hit the $65 billion number. We are looking at an intersection of these two segments, which plays to the strengths that we currently have,” Abhimanyu Lal, Chief Product Officer, Pepperfry told Business Insider. Over the past three quarters, the value of gold has continued to accelerate. As a result, Kalyan Jewellers is now looking to increase its customer basket size by at least 30%. The brand also managed to close 10% of its annual <keyword id="126295" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Akshaya-Tritiya">Akshaya Tritiya</keyword> business with a unique initiative that was tailor-made for quarantine. It launched a Gold Ownership Certificate which allowed customers to purchase and own gold on Akshaya Tritiya. The certificate could be redeemed against physical gold, in the form of jewellery or coins, on or before October 31, 2020. The brand is still witnessing ‘a steady stream of footfalls’ across its operational showrooms from consumers who bought the certificate. Looking at these trends, Kalyan Jewellers’ Executive Director, Ramesh Kalyanaraman, voiced his optimism for the recovery of the sector. He shared with us how intimate weddings emerging as a trend has affected the jewellery industry, various safety precautions it has taken across operational showrooms and why the brand decided to align its marketing monnies on digital to adjust to the volatile market. Excerpts: Q. Tell us a bit about your campaign #MuharatAtHome. What is the idea behind it? What are the challenges you are facing in conducting ad shoots considering the restrictions? Weddings have always brought people together. This year, with lockdown restrictions in place during peak wedding season, it was presumed that everyone would postpone their wedding plans, but we were pleasantly surprised to see that this wasn’t the case at all. We saw families trade grand ceremonies for intimate functions, ruled by minimalism, simplicity and personalization. It is this trend of intimate weddings that our #MuhuratAtHome campaign captures. For the ad campaign we opted for an ‘at-home’ shoot with limited cast and crew, following state specified shoot protocols. As this is going to be a Pan-India campaign with multiple iterations, it was shot in three cities, with three separate teams. In each of these locations, the advertising agencies involved, followed the guidelines issued by local authorities and recreated a home-like intimate wedding set up. Q. How difficult was the lockdown period for Kalyan Jewellers? Initially it felt strange, because this was the first time in all these years that all our showrooms were shut at the same time. After a week, we realised that we will need to make good of this time, and so we started using it more productively to strategize, realign priorities and plan our next steps. For the staff, we conducted online training sessions. We also did customer outreach more as a gesture than anything else. We were actively involved in many CSR initiatives, be it collaborating with our brand ambassador Amitabh Bachchan and Sony Pictures Network. During Akshaya Tritiya, at the request of regular customers, we launched the Gold Ownership Certificate which allowed customers to purchase and own gold on Akshaya Tritiya. The certificate could be redeemed for against physical gold, in the form of jewellery or coins, on or before October 31, 2020. To our surprise, this was very well received, and we managed to do close to 10% of our annual Akshaya Tritiya business with this initiative. Q. How are your preparations for unlocking going? What are the various safety precautions you have taken across operational showrooms? We have heightened the safety and hygiene measures across our operational showrooms to safeguard the health and safety of our patrons and the community at large. All customers are given temperate checks with handheld scanners at the entrance. Customers are required to use single-use glove in the showrooms, and this is made available to them upon entry. Masks are provided to anyone who is not wearing it already. Deep cleaning of showrooms is undertaken at regular intervals through the day, and all high touch point zones like counter tops, door knobs etc. are frequently sanitized. We feel that going forward, even when the lockdown is completely lifted, these hygiene practices will become the new normal. Q. How have you observed consumer behavior changing lately? And what are some of the consumer buying trends witnessed in regions where showrooms have reopened? Over the past three quarters, we have witnessed a surge in gold prices and the value of gold, as an asset, has continued to accelerate. It is the only asset that has proved to be a promising and safe investment option for consumers across the country. In line with this, we are looking at an increase in the customer basket size by at least 30%. Furthermore, with DIY or intimate weddings emerging as a trend, the wedding-related expenses on venue booking, catering, etc. have reduced and customers have more disposable income at their end, which is now being allocated to investing in gold jewellery. Additionally, shoppers who have postponed their weddings are making purchases as planned by availing our bridal lounge facility, for a personalized shopping experience. Currently, we are witnessing a steady stream of footfalls across our operational showrooms. A segment of those footfalls are customers who are reaping the benefits of pre-booking their gold jewellery or those who purchased the Gold Ownership Certificate this Akshaya Tritiya. Some are there to exchange their older gold for newer pieces. Looking at the current trend, we are fairly optimistic about the recovery of the sector. Q. What has your marketing strategy been during the lockdown? Did you modify your media mix, with marketing investments getting shifted from one medium to another? One of the biggest trends that has emerged out of the nationwide lockdown is the huge surge in screen time spent by Indians across digital platforms. In line with this, brands have begun to align their marketing budgets towards digital, social media &amp; OTT, especially when it comes to placing new content. In line with this, we introduced temporary changes to our media mix with a more digital-centric approach. For campaigns such as #MaaTuneSonaKaDilPaya (Mother’s Day), we leveraged crowdsourced photographs from our social media community wherein some of the best moments were handpicked to feature in a campaign video. Amitabh Bachchan was the voice of the campaign, and it was well received. The #MuhuratAtHome campaign is also a result of a similar online-only strategy. Q. We are sure the future of retail and jewellery industry will never be the same. How are you making sure you opt to digital media, online selling policies and physical distancing need to help your consumer? The unique aspect to the jewellery business is the concept of privacy while shopping which has always existed. Families come together and prefer to sit together, a little away from other families that are shopping. Kalyan Jewellers’ showrooms are therefore standalone showrooms, which are either mid-size, large format or flagship showrooms, designed to allow this unique shopping practice. Our counters are also demarcated as wedding, gemstone, diamond or daily wear jewellery – which is an added advantage during these times of social distancing. (Auspicious days like Akshaya Tritiya or Dhanteras are the only times when this rule doesn’t apply.) Additionally, as mentioned earlier we have launched appointment facilities for our bridal lounge services which can be availed by wedding shoppers for a personalized shopping experience. Q. Do you think this experience will change the way you market your brand in the future? The USP of the brand will remain the same, but the channels of marketing might change. Naturally, when you change the channel, the way you communicate the same brand USP will get amended. In the coming years, we intend to focus on targeted marketing campaigns. Q. The pandemic and the lockdown has brought with it a lot of learning. What are your major learnings from this experience so far? During the lockdown, we re-evaluated many aspects of our business, and realised that with careful planning, we can cut costs under various heads, without affecting the overall performance of the business. We intend to implement this learning even going forward. With showrooms spread across the country, our senior and mid-level management used to travel extensively. Now with the lockdown rules, travel has reduced significantly, and we are managing our operations remotely. This saves both money and time. Going forward, we plan to carefully rationalise travel needs. Our marketing campaigns have also evolved post the lockdown, and we are looking at targeting online campaigns instead of larger campaigns, and this is also working well for us. Another lesson for the future.

The big, fat, Indian wedding is the stuff of dreams.For Krishma Sood Bhojwani, this meant hosting a four-day-long celebration at the JW Marriott in Phuket, Thailand. The bride imported cheese wheels from Italy, sourced Iberico ham directly from Spain, and hired a photography team from Mumbai. She flew in <a href="https://www.wedmegood.com/blog/epic-phuket-wedding-with-head-turning-bridal-looks/">chefs</a> from India and Japan, and had cooks preparing fresh food across 24 dining stations.The wedding consisted of eight events spread across four days, all set against the backdrop of the oceanfront resort where lush jungle meets the province's coastline. In 2018, billionaire tycoon Mukesh Ambani <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-12-10/real-crazy-rich-asian-wedding-is-said-to-cost-100-million?leadSource=uverify%20wall">spent</a> a reported $100 million on his daughter's wedding, with guests like Beyonce, Shah Rukh Khan, and Hillary Clinton in attendance.But even for the just ordinarily wealthy, weddings can ring up serious price tags: Indian families are known to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/thailand-looks-indian-weddings-boost-tourism-revenue-2022-08-31/">spend</a> as much as $800,000 on destination weddings at five-star hotels and resorts across Southeast Asia. Traditionally, the bride's family would bear the wedding costs, but that's now considered an <a href="https://qz.com/2130328/how-hindu-weddings-became-indias-cultural-export/">outdated practice</a> — many families, including Bhojwani and her husband's, choose to share the expenses. After all, that big Indian wedding may just be the tipping factor between ending the year in red or black. <h2>The big business of big Indian weddings</h2>One reason high-end Indian weddings can be so expensive is because they're often not single-day events — Sikh wedding ceremonies, for example, are held over several days, said Vin Ramash, a wedding planner with Singapore-based wedding and events company Alangkaar. <div type="image" title="Krishma Sood Bhojwani's wedding in Phuket." height="4023" width="5365" msid="94268301" hostid="261"></div>"At the higher end, Punjabi weddings start at $100,000 per day, so spending $500,000 is possible," Ramash told Insider, explaining that this is typical of weddings held at premium hotels like Capella, St. Regis, or Ritz-Carlton.But the bells, whistles, and whims of the couple also contribute to the hefty price tag.Hand-made mandaps, or altars, and custom-designed decorations can cost around $40,000, Ramash said — and additional requests like fireworks can cost even more.And then there's the travel element. As destination weddings become more popular among high-net worth Indian couples, many couples are looking to Thailand. After lockdowns, travel restrictions, and four postponements, they finally decided to host their wedding in Thailand.Vendors and planners in Phu Quoc failed to understand what they wanted for their wedding "no matter how hard we negotiated," Bhojwani said. The planners and venue in Thailand, meanwhile, "understood the vision, the scale, the grandeur, and experience" she and her husband were looking for.<div type="image" title="Krishma Sood Bhojwani's wedding." height="3881" width="5174" msid="94268305" hostid="261"></div><h2>Tourism boards and luxury hotels are fighting for weddings</h2>Given the pent-up demand, and in an effort to get back to pre-pandemic business levels, tourism boards and luxury hotels are prioritizing marketing campaigns that target the ultra-luxe destination Indian wedding segment. That means that destinations like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Maldives are often vying for the same big-budget weddings.Resorts are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to become the destination of choice. Hotels are catering to all sorts of demands from the wedding parties, including making special arrangements for religious rituals like providing a Hindu priest to solemnize the wedding. In some instances, they've even offered to rebook guests at sister venues if a bigger wedding party wants to book out the entire property. Tourism boards are getting in on it, too.For Thailand, wedding revenue is embedded into the tourism revenue for the year. Thailand expects a 600 billion to 700 billion baht, or $16 to 19 million, boost to tourism revenues this year from luxury weddings and honeymooners, Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/thailand-looks-indian-weddings-boost-tourism-revenue-2022-08-31/">reported</a>, citing a senior tourism official. Indian tourists are the "priority" this year, Tanes Petsuwan, the deputy governor of Thailand's tourism authority, <a href="https://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Travel-Leisure/Thai-tourism-eyes-Indian-weddings-as-Chinese-spending-dries-up">told</a> Nikkei Asia.<div type="image" title="Krishma Sood Bhojwani's wedding." height="2250" width="3000" msid="94268475" hostid="261"></div>Other tourism boards, like Indonesia's, are also on the prowl to woo these glitzy-eyed couples. Indonesia tourism board officials often collaborate with the biggest wedding planners in countries like India, and in some instances are even present when resorts are pitching to the prospective brides and grooms. The fruits of this labor can be sweet. For one high-profile wedding slated to be held in the tropical island of Bali, talks are now revolving around a chartered flight for around 250 guests, Sondhi said.
