Big Bazaar rides on the vaccine buzzword for its latest campaign

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Romina Amato/Red Bull via Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>It's a safe bet that FBI director James Comey and Brian Hoffman would not get along.</p><p>Earlier this week, as <a href="http://judiciary.house.gov/_cache/files/781b192e-78b3-41b8-ad6c-0e01e578c0eb/comey-written-testimony.pdf">Comey was testifying to a US House Committee about the risks of encryption letting criminals "go dark,"</a> Hoffman and his team were working on a "testnet" release of OpenBazaar - a decentralised and uncensorable online marketplace that can be used by anyone to sell anything without fear of police intervention.</p><p>OpenBazaar has been in the works in some form since 2014 when it was conceived by <a href="http://motherboard.vice.com/read/the-anarchist-hacker-bitcoin-would-rather-not-talk-about">controversial bitcoin developer Amir Taaki</a>. The vision is an online peer-to-peer market, in the vein of eBay or Etsy - but unlike eBay, transactions will take place using bitcoin, and the entire site will be decentralised across the network of people accessing it, making it impossible to close down.</p><p>Hoffman subsequently took over from Taaki, rebranding the project as OpenBazaar, <a href="http://uk.businessinsider.com/openbazaar-gets-1-million-seed-round-from-andreessen-horowitz-union-square-ventures-2015-6">and in June 2015 it took a $1 million (£700,000) seed round</a> from tech venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz and Union Square Ventures.</p><p>Since then it has been working towards a public release of its software - and on March 2, the project took a big leap forward.</p><h2>The testnet is live - and a full release is just weeks away</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><a href="https://blog.openbazaar.org/openbazaar-released-on-the-testnet/"></a><p class="source"><span>Brian Hoffman/Twitter</span></p><p class="caption">Brian Hoffman.</p></div><p></p></div></div><a href="https://blog.openbazaar.org/openbazaar-released-on-the-testnet/"></a>There's <a href="https://blog.openbazaar.org/openbazaar-released-on-the-testnet/">now a functioning version of OpenBazaar running on the "testnet."</a> This is a kind of open beta that anyone can download and run, but it uses "testnet bitcoin" - a "fake" version of the digital currency for running tests that doesn't have any real value. It means the developer team can test out the software with a larger audience and iron out the bugs without any real risk."If people lose their money it's just a horrible idea," Hoffman told Business Insider.</p><p>Over the last two days, more than 6,000 people have <a href="https://openbazaar.org/download.html">downloaded installed the testnet version of OpenBazaar</a>, Hoffman says, and there's a new user signing up every two minutes. "I think the decentralised model where 'take rates' (the percentage cut the marketplace takes) are eliminated will force the incumbents to have to rethink their strategy for capturing profit from consumers. The FBI wants Apple to build it software to help it break into an encrypted iPhone that was used by one of the San Bernardino shooters, But Apple refuses, arguing making these tools would be too dangerous.</p><p>One of the central questions at stake is whether there should be spaces online - enabled by cryptography - that are outside the reach of the law. Another is whether companies and developers can be forced to develop software against their will.</p><p>OpenBazaar is publicly accessible - but its uncensorable nature means it is fundamentally incompatible with calls from James Comey <em>et al</em> to eliminate dark spaces online. It's no surprise, then, that Brian Hoffman is backing Apple in its fight.</p><p>"'We're going to make you write some kind of backdoor,'" Hoffman says, paraphrasing the FBI's argument. "To me, that's compelled speech. That's a violation of our rights. We feel pretty securely that the law is on our side, but this Apple case is a landmark case."</p><p>If the FBI were to win, Hoffman is worried about the precedent it would set. The dream of an uncensorable online marketplace just took a major step closer to reality

New Delhi, May 3 () Retailers and traders expect to re-open more shops from Monday under the new relaxed guidelines by the government for the extended lockdown period till May 17, although they are still seeking clarity from local authorities.<p>Retailers Association of India (RAI) said it will have to be seen how it works out at the ground as there is confusion, and many states are yet to come up with guidelines to follow the Centre's decision. It has already stated that what constitutes market places could be misinterpreted.</p><p>Similarly, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) also claimed they will be in a "dilemma" as there is confusion over "what constitutes a neighbourhood shop and a standalone shop", while organised retailers such as Future Group and V-Mart Retail said they are also seeking permissions from local authorities.</p><p>"Some parts of the businesses will reopen. What we see is that there is the possibility of opening of some standalone stores...We will open wherever we can and we will talk to the local authorities to open. We will have to see how it works out.</p><p>"In any case individual states will have to come out with clear guidelines. While some states have come out with the guidelines but they are the same as what Centre has said. I think the states are also confused and they are printing the same thing that Centre is sending," RAI CEO Kumar Rajagopalan told .</p><p>Expressing similar concerns, CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said, "The traders will be in a dilemma".</p><p>When asked whether things are expected to change on the ground with the phase 3 of lockdown beginning Monday, he said there is "lack of clarity and confusion over what constitutes a neighbourhood shop and a standalone shop".</p><p>He asserted that the "clarification should come from the right quarters. Not only the Centre, it is the duty of the state governments to issue that clarification because most of the issues are under the domain of the state governments, the law enforcement authorities also function as per their directives".</p><p>National General Secretary of the Federation of All India Vyapar Mandal, V K Bansal said, "The biggest problem with the guidelines is that it all depends on the states. The states frame their own policies and do not want to take any responsibility. The Centre wants relaxation but states are restrictive".</p><p>While wholesale markets are not allowed to open in red zones in Delhi, he said, standalone shops can open but the state government's role was crucial in implementation of the Centre's guidelines.</p><p>Bansal added that unavailability of migrant labour was a major issue faced by shop owners, restricting their operations.</p><p>According to the leading retailer Future group, the company would now start retailing other than non-essential and food items wherever allowed after the new notification.</p><p>"Inside Big Bazar, we would be now able to sell not just food and essentials only but also other items as crockery, kitchenware and general merchandise. Even at Big Bazaar, at certain places we would start selling other products apart from food," said a Future group official.</p><p>The Future Group, which operates in several formats such as large stores Big Bazaar and neighbourhood store Easyday, said that the company is in the process of obtaining permission to open the stores in the green zone.</p><p>"Wherever, we have standalone stores in the green zone, we are also figuring out with the authorities when to start operating," the official said.</p><p>According to another Future group official, most of its big format stores like Big Bazaar are in malls, which have been kept closed even during the second phase of the lockdown.</p><p>"The standalone stores of Big Bazaars were already operating. Some of our stores are in non-mall areas and we have written to the local authorities seeking permission for that," he said.</p><p>Around 80 per cent stores of Big Bazaar are operational with several restrictions such as timing, number of visiting and retailing activities limited only to essential items, the official said.</p><p>Value fashion and lifestyle products retailer V-Mart Retail also said it is gearing to open the stores in the green and orange zone but reiterated that there is a need for clarification on the difference between malls and standalone stores, specially in small towns.</p><p>"We have around 62 stores are in green zone and 98 are in orange, where there are chances that the stores would open. We are in talks with the local administration to allow the stores to open," V-Mart Retail Chairman and MD Lalit Agarwal said.</p><p>He, however, said it will be a gradual opening as initially people would hesitate to come into the store.</p><p>"We expect all our stores to be opened in phased manners and in the initial month only 20 per cent customer would visit," Agarwal said.</p><p>He sought greater clarity from the government on the differentiation between a mall and standalone retailers.</p><p>"In the small towns, there are no malls and they (local authorities) misunderstand small standalone stores like us for a mall and prohibit us from operating," Agarwal said.</p><p>Under the MHA guidelines, malls will continue to remain shut in all zones.</p><p>In red zone all malls, market complexes and markets will remain closed in urban areas, which are within limits of municipal corporations and municipalities. However, shops selling essential goods in markets and market complexes are allowed.</p><p>All standalone shops, neighbourhood shops and shops in residential complexes are permitted in urban areas without any restrictions of essential and non-essential. In rural areas all shops, excepts malls, are permitted to open without any distinction of essential and non-essential but social distancing has to be maintained in all cases.</p>In green and amber zones there are no such restrictions for marketplaces, neighbourhood and standalone shops. <p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Post Facebook's News Feed change, Hearst</strong> <strong>has been focusing on producing premium, longer-form episodic video series on YouTube.</strong></li><li><strong>The publisher of Seventeen, Harper's Bazaar, Elle and Cosmopolitan has created more than 34 new web shows, and plans to launch six more in&#xa0;the upcoming weeks.</strong></li><li><strong>The move is a bid to create a diversified distribution strategy that doesn't rely too much on one platform and also develop a loyal audience in the long run.</strong></li></ul><p>Still reeling from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/media-companies-and-publishers-react-to-facebooks-sweeping-news-feed-changes-2018-1">Facebook's dramatic News Feed shake-up</a>&#xa0;earlier this year, publishers have been in the search of new sustainable ways to build their video businesses.</p><p>Some, like NowThis, have turned back the spotlight <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-social-publisher-nowthis-has-brought-back-its-website-after-a-3-year-hiatus-following-facebooks-massive-new-feed-changes-2018-1">on their websites</a>. Others, like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/refinery29-is-launching-on-demand-channel-focused-on-lifestyle-content-2018-5">Condé Nast and Refinery29</a>, have started to take aim at over-the-top (OTT) streaming. And many, have even started to pay more attention to <a href="https://digiday.com/media/big-resurgence-publishers-get-boost-twitter-video/">Twitter</a> and Snapchat.&#xa0;</p><p>For Hearst, the publisher behind magazines like Cosmopolitan and Seventeen among others, the focus has been on ramping up on premium, longer-form episodic video series, with a sharp focus on YouTube over the past six months.&#xa0;</p><p>The publisher has created more than 34 new episodic video series across four of its brands alone - including Seventeen, Harper's Bazaar, Elle and Cosmopolitan - and has plans to launch six more in&#xa0;the upcoming weeks.</p><p>"The biggest factor behind our push is&#xa0;our steadfast belief that a diversified video strategy is best for the long-term vitality of the business," said Todd Haskell, SVP and chief revenue officer at Hearst. "Having diverse distribution channels reduces risk, so when there is inevitable disruption, it doesn't overly impact our business."</p><p>One example is Harper's Bazaar's "Food Diaries" for instance, which highlights what celebrities eat in a day. Another is Elle's "Online, IRL," which features Style Director Nikki Ogunnaike trying on looks from top e-commerce retailers like ASOS, Boohoo and Pretty Little Things, to see how they fit in real life.</p><p>The content of these shows, Hearst says, has been created specifically for YouTube and keeping the platform's audience in mind&#xa0;- though it also lives on other platforms and on Hearst's own owned and operated sites.</p><p>"We took a birds-eye view of how we had been creating content across platforms over the past three years, and realized we needed to focus on creating bespoke series tailored to each specific one," said Anna Jimenez, head of editorial video at Hearst. "That meant getting Snapchat-specific, Instagram-specific and YouTube-specific."</p><p>Hearst's YouTube shows are designed as appointment programming - where viewers can expect to tune into a new episode on the same day and time every week. They're also longer-format, with videos averaging between 10-20 minutes per episode.</p><p>"Our challenge is not to create a one-hit wonder, it's to build loyalty and create a culture where the audience gets used to expecting something at a certain time," said Kate Lewis, svp and editorial director at Hearst Magazines Digital <keyword id="6354777" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Media">Media</keyword>. "We're not trying to compete for passive attention here."</p><p>Consequently, the metrics that the publisher uses to track how the shows are performing are also more longer-term. Instead of engagement metrics such as likes and shares, Hearst says it places more emphasis on watch-time, that is how far into the episode users watch the shows, as well as return viewers, or whether viewers come back to watch the series. It also tracks how much individual shows contribute to the channel's growth.</p><p>Since September 2017, all four channels including Seventeen, Harper's Bazaar, Elle and Cosmopolitan have seen "exponential growth" in views, new subscribers and watch time, according to Hearst. Seventeen, for example, has boosted new subscribers by over 3,000%, while Harper's Bazaar and Elle's watch times have both increased 484% and 364% respectively. Cosmopolitan's views, meanwhile, have jumped by 252%.</p><p>Publishers aren't spending more time and resources on YouTube for nothing. Unlike Facebook, where many media companies have struggled to make money from video despite building up sizable audiences, YouTube has a well established ad model centered on pre-roll <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>.</p><p>YouTube creators share a hefty cut of ad revenue with Google. In this case, publishers the size of Hearst (minimum 1.5 million "monetizable views") can direct-sell against their YouTube channels, shows and videos.</p><p>"Brands can run adjacent ads, integrated ads or a combination of both&#xa0;- they can even do sponsorships," said Haskell. "In a world where there is a ton of anxiety about brand safety and adjacency, our brand content is seen as a safe harbor in an otherwise turbulent ocean."</p><p>Of course, YouTube is a crowded place, and there's no guarantee that publishers will be able to consistently attract audiences that are large enough for advertisers to care about - especially when they can just buy ads across YouTube.</p><p>However, given YouTube's ongoing issues with brand safety, more big advertisers are looking for premium (safe) web content, said Jeremy Sigel, global svp of content and innovation at Essence. He said it was a huge growth area for the agency, across its clients.&#xa0;</p><p>"Aligning yourself with premium publisher content that leverages top talent goes a long way," he said. Publishing giant Hearst is betting that YouTube will fill a Facebook-shaped hole, and it's seeing 'exponential growth'

My probation officer wouldn't give me the time," Stewart told Yuan.</p><p>"That really pissed me off, because I would have loved to have hosted 'Saturday Night Live<em>.</em>' I'd like that on my résumé," she added.</p><p>In late 2004 and early 2005, the businesswoman <a href="https://www.insider.com/facts-martha-stewart-2018-7#she-was-convicted-of-three-felony-charges-in-2004-12">spent five months in a minimum-security prison</a> and five months in home confinement after being convicted for lying about a stock sale. According to the same Harper's Bazaar feature, Stewart's charges included conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and lying about insider trading. But <keyword id="161880" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Yashish-Dahiya">Yashish Dahiya</keyword>, co-founder of <keyword id="161885" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Policy-Bazaar">Policy Bazaar</keyword> believes it to be otherwise.<br />
	<br />
	“When I look at life insurance, this segment of the industry is out of steam. And the government is making a big mistake by protecting this particular segment. As a proportion of the overall insurance industry, India is very lopsided in favour of life insurance. But most of the products sold are not pure life insurance,” Dahiya told BI India while comfortably seated in his office in Gurgaon.<br />
	<br />
	Besides protecting the segment, he noted that consumers are kept in dark about life insurance products. “But the problem is that at present people are sold insurance products without being told what the product really is,” asserted Dahiya.<br />

	Explaining his statement, Dahiya noted that the life insurance products that are sold to the customers are pitched as investment products. He pointed out that at present; people are buying insurance products for investment purposes. “It is true that investment part of the insurance attracts people to buy insurance products. We have done an analyses of almost 1000 customers and almost all of them said that their primary objective is to make investment and not insurance,” he said.<br />
	<br />
	But it isn’t that pure life insurance products are not available in the market. According to Dahiya, this category of insurance product is sold on digital platforms only. “Pure life insurance has seen some action in the last five years. And it would not have grown, had there not been any digital platform available to the consumers, which is where consumers are buying pure life insurance products. For instance, a consumer can buy Rs 1 crore cover for Rs 10,000,” he noted.<br />
	<br />
	Substantiating his point, Dahiya elaborated that the cost of physical distribution of pure life insurance has made it financially unviable. “For a physical distributor to make such a policy viable, he will have to sell one policy a day, which is quite a challenge. Hence, the physical distribution of the product cannot sustain that product. But that is where the market will eventually lie,” he averred.<br />
	<br />
	Dahiya told BI India that the segment is evolving—from being price competitive to feature rich. So what does he mean when he says feature rich? “When I say feature rich, it means pay-outs over time among others. So, we are moving into more and more pure risk zone. But it is just the mechanism of payouts is changing because people prefer pay-outs in regular intervals than a one-time lumpsum amount,” he said.<br />
	<br />
	Citing an example, he added, “For instance, when I take a policy and if something happens to me, then I would want my wife to get a regular pension for the entire life from the policy that I have taken. I would want my children’s educational expenses covered. I would like to create almost corpuses on incidents that are objective oriented. I see the market moving in this direction and that is where the growth will really come from.”<br />
	<br />
	However, it should be noted that at present, the pay-outs happen when there is a death, disability or illness. In a no-death scenario, the pay-outs don’t happen.<br />
	<br />
	Currently, for Policy Bazaar, nearly 90% of their sales in the life insurance segment comes from pure life insurance. The company is now foraying into investment products such as Fixed Deposits and Mutual Funds through its new venture Paisa Bazaar.

Digital payment company <keyword id="143842" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mobikwik">MobiKwik</keyword> today said its customers will be able to pay <keyword id="89728" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Toll-tax">toll tax</keyword> at 391 toll plazas using the mobile wallet.<br />
<br /> After receiving the approval from National Highways Authority of India (<keyword id="49448" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="nhai">NHAI</keyword>), Mobikwik's wallet service will soon be live at 391 toll plazas in India, it said in a statement.<br />
<br />
The company has received an approval from NHAI to enable commuters across all toll plazas in the country pay cashless through its mobile wallet to avoid traffic congestion due to cash crunch, it added.<br />
<br />
"Commuters across the country can soon pay cashless at all toll plazas using their MobiKwik wallet. We have taken this step in the wake of demonetisation to avoid congestion at highways, owing to the ill effects of cash crunch," MobiKwik co-founder Bipin Preet Singh said.<br />
<br />
Post scrapping of old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes on November 8, NHAI has announced no charge at all toll plazas till December 2, 2016.<br />
<br />
However, the scarcity of physical cash is expected to impact the smooth traffic at tolls after this date, given that masses are still struggling to get cash.<br />
<br />
To solve this issue, MobiKwik has been roped in to digitise toll plazas in India, the company said.<br />
<br />
At the toll plazas, users will have to open the MobiKwik app on their phone and scan the QR code on the toll plaza. After entering the amount communicated by the toll operator and the vehicle number, they can press 'pay' to complete the transaction.<br />
<br /> MobiKwik has about 40 million users and is accepted at 2.5 lakh merchants, including IRCTC, <keyword id="6357823" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Big-Bazaar">Big Bazaar</keyword>, OYO Rooms, Zomato, Grofers and Big Basket.<br />

You will soon be able to pay toll tax using Mobikwik Wallet

New Delhi, Jan 6 () Amazon India on Monday said it has entered into long-term business agreements with Future Group for expanding the reach of the latter's retail stores and consumer brands through its online marketplace.
<p> The development comes after Amazon had agreed to buy 49 per cent stake in Future Coupons Ltd that in turn holds stake in Future Retail Ltd (FRL) last year.
</p><p> "FRL and Amazon India signed two agreements focusing on key categories - grocery and general merchandise, and fashion and footwear," according to a statement released Monday.
</p><p> Amazon India will also become the authorised online sales channel for FRL stores, and FRL will ensure participation of its relevant stores and programmes on the Amazon India marketplace, it added.
</p><p> Besides, Future Consumer Ltd (FCL) has also inked a long-term agreement with Amazon Retail India Pvt Ltd (ARIPL) for distribution of Future Consumer's portfolio of brands online. Some of FCL brands include Tasty Treat, Voom, Dreamery, Karmiq, Mother Earth, Kara, CleanMate and others.
</p><p> As part of the partnership, FRL will augment existing store-infrastructure at its retail outlets for facilitating seamless packaging and pickup of products ordered online. FRL and Amazon India have already launched this service across 22 stores. Both companies plan on rolling this out across the entire FRL store chain based on agreed timelines.
</p><p> "FRL will leverage its existing infrastructure, strong product knowledge and extensive brand portfolio resulting in higher store productivity and improved margins," as per the statement.
</p><p> Currently, FRL attracts over 350 million footfalls across its retail network, and Amazon India's marketplace will enable FRL to reach a wider customer base.
</p><p> Also, FRL will list on the Amazon Prime Now programme, allowing customers to get food, grocery and general merchandise delivery within two hours in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad.
</p><p> FRL plans to soon list stores like Big Bazaar, and Foodhall in more cites on the Amazon India marketplace.
</p><p> "In order to drive efficiencies, the two organisations will work closely through a dedicated team, and will explore synergies in distribution, customer acquisition, and marketing initiatives. This creates an enviable collaboration bringing together the best of consumer insights and geographical reach from the online and offline world," the statement said.
</p><p> Kishore Biyani, Chairman and Managing Director of FRL, said "this arrangement will allow us to build upon each other's strengths in the physical and digital space so that customers benefit from the best services, products, assortment and price".
</p><p> "FRL's national footprint of stores offering thousands of products across fashion, appliances, home, kitchen and grocery will now be available to millions of customers shopping on Amazon.in, in hours across over 25 cities," Amazon India Senior Vice President and Country Head Amit Agarwal said.
</p><p> On the FCL-ARIPL partnership, Future Consumer Ltd Managing Director Ashni Biyani said the collaboration will expand the reach of its brands to new sets of customers on Amazon India's online marketplace.
</p><p> "We will be working closely with Amazon to develop marketing and promotion initiatives and look forward to using Amazon's technical expertise and resources to increase the reach of our brands. Our distinct portfolio of brands catering to aspirational categories will be an excellent addition to Amazon's offerings. Hence, we believe this is a win-win agreement," Ashni Biyani added.
</p><p> FCL brands are currently available across multiple channels including general trade, digital platforms and modern retail apart from over 1,700 stores across Future Group's retail chains including Big Bazaar, EasyDay, Heritage Fresh, Nilgiris, WH Smith and among others.

LIC [Life Insurance Corporation] alone has roughly 1.5 million agents and the rest of the industry put together nearly another 0.5 million. There are a similar number of executives working as employees in the industry. However, over the past 5 to 7 years attempts, have been made to create digital<br /><br />distribution infrastructure. These efforts will increase in the next few years,” Sanjib Jha, chief executive of Coverfox said.<br /><br />Indian online insurance players include initial public offering (IPO)-bound <keyword id="696009" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="policybazaar" source="Orion">PolicyBazaar</keyword>, Digit Insurance, BankBazaar, Coverfox and others. ACKO General Insurance is one of the startups that issues their own insurance policies instead of being a third-party seller.<br /><br /><keyword id="3067182" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="dexter-capital" source="Orion">Dexter Capital</keyword>’s founder Devendra Agrawal, in an email interaction with Business Insider, noted that the Indian insurtech segment is a very large subsector of fintech and is largely dominated by traditional companies. There is very little innovation and user friendliness in the current offering, but there is scope for greater innovation as more startups emerge in the segment.<br /><br />He added that the new insurtech segment is likely to focus on three things. First, new product launches. Second, a more user-friendly interface and processes. Third, newer models would be introduced when it comes to insurance selling. <br /><br />Shwetank Verma of Indian Insurtech Association reflected a similar view, highlighting that there is a lot of scope for innovation in the insurtech sector and new categories like cyber insurance, <a href="https://content.naic.org/cipr_topics/topic_parametric_disaster_insurance.htm">parametric insurance </a>— a non-traditional insurance product that offers pre-specified payouts based upon a trigger event — and would gain more traction this decade by 2030.<br /><br />“Most of the insurtech action has been in terms of distribution of policies and a couple of insurers who are digital-first. While these categories will certainly see growth, our view is that the sector is at a tipping point.
