New Delhi, Legal doyen and veteran advocate Fali S <keyword id="20668460" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nariman" source="keywords">Nariman</keyword> died here on Wednesday at the age of 95. He was suffering from multiple ailments, including cardiac issues. Born on January 10, 1929, Nariman was enrolled as an advocate at the Bombay High Court in November 1950 and was designated a senior advocate in 1961. Nariman was born in Rangoon (now Yangon) to a well-off business executive. The Nariman family fled to India in the face of the Japanese invasion in 1942 when Fali was 12. He practised law for more than 70 years, initially in the Bombay High Court and since 1972, in the Supreme Court. Nariman was appointed as the additional solicitor general of India in May 1972. He resigned from the post a day after the imposition of Emergency on June 26, 1975. In his long and illustrious legal career, Nariman argued in several landmark cases, including the Bhopal gas tragedy case, TMA Pai case, Jayalalithaa disproportionate assets case and the famous case of the National Judicial Appointments Commission, which was struck down by the Supreme Court. Nariman, who was often referred to as the "Bhishma Pitamah" of the Indian judiciary, authored books, including "Before the Memory Fades", "The State of the Nation", "India's Legal System: Can it be Saved?" and "God Save the Hon'ble Supreme Court". Nariman received the Padma Bhushan in January 1991 and in 2007, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. He was also nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha in November 1999. Reacting to the news of his death, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi took to X and wrote: "End of an era' #falinariman passes away, a living legend who will forever be in hearts and minds of those in law and public life. Above all his diverse achievements, he stuck to his principles unwaveringly and called a spade a spade, a quality shared by his brilliant son #Rohinton." Solicitor General <keyword id="20038814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tushar-mehta" source="keywords">Tushar Mehta</keyword> said not only the legal fraternity, but the country has lost a towering figure of intellect and wisdom. "The country has lost an epitome of what righteousness stood for. A doyen, paragon and a legend in his own lifetime has left us, leaving the jurisprudence enriched by his immense contribution. I have always learnt something new by merely appearing even against him," the law officer said in his message. Activist-lawyer <keyword id="20027334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prashant-bhushan" source="keywords">Prashant Bhushan</keyword> said Nariman's death was an enormous loss to the country. In a post on X, Bhushan wrote: "Very sad news. Eminent Jurist Fali S Nariman Passes Away. He was also regarded as the Bhishma Pitamah of the lawyer community. A great lawyer and close friend of our family. His passing away at this critical juncture is an enormous loss for our country." Rajinikanth to receive the 51st Dadasaheb Phalke award

Women dominated this year's <keyword id="6391019" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Padma-awards">Padma awards</keyword> for sports with tennis star Sania Mirza and ace shuttler <keyword id="30618" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Saina-Nehwal">Saina Nehwal</keyword> getting the nod for the Padma Bhushan, while archer <keyword id="86231" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Deepika-Kumari">Deepika Kumari</keyword> was chosen for the Padma Shri here today. 

	All three were in sublime touch last year and brought the country laurels in their respective sports. 
 Sania enjoyed the most sensational run, clinching nine titles -- including two Grand Slams last year with Swiss great Martina Hingis. The exceptional performance propelled her to the top of the <keyword id="935171" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="WTA-doubles-rankings">WTA doubles rankings</keyword>.

	"It is a great honour and I want to thank the Ministry for giving me the award. I am very happy with the way the last year has gone, I have been performing well. I reached World No.1 last year and now I am World No.2. I am sure this award will give me more motivation to do well further this year," Saina said. 
 

	"It came as a complete surprise to me. I had no clue. I did not expect at all. There was no news of it at all. When I think that I am just 25 and I have received this award, it makes me feel great. But it is still a long way to go." 
 

	Saina was left disappointed after the Sports Ministry decided to reject her application for the award in January last year, citing norms. 
 

	The ministry had picked two-time Olympic-medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar for the honour last year. 
 

	Saina was bestowed the Khel Ratna and Padma Shri in 2010 and also received the Arjuna Award in 2009. 
 

	The 21-year-old Deepika, meanwhile, had also won the team silver along with Laxmirani Majhi and Rimil Buriuly in the World Championships.

Padmavati, India's first female cardiologist, has passed away due to Covid-19 at the age of 103 after battling the disease for 11 days. In a statement on Sunday, O.P. Yadava, Chief Executive Officer of Delhi's National Heart Institute said: "Our very own Madam Padmavati has left us all, after her centurial terrestrial journey. She fought corona bravely but chose to move on at 11.09 p.m. on August 29. Let us keep her in our prayers forever and long." According to another statement by the National Heart Institute, also issued on Sunday, she was admitted with Covid-19 and had breathing difficulty and fever. "She developed pneumonia in both lungs and needed ventilator support. However, she sustained a cardiac arrest and passed away," it said. The noted cardiologist, also a recipient of <keyword id="9774748" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="the-padma-vibhushan">the Padma Vibhushan</keyword>, had set up the National Heart Institute of the All India Heart Foundation and had served as its Director and President. Her research work has been on rheumatic heart disease, cor pulmonale, hypertension and coronary artery disease with special reference to epidemiology and prevention. The acclaimed doctor has published extensively in prestigious journals in India and abroad. She has taught undergraduates, post-graduates and post-doctoral fellows for over 45 years. An all-women list for the highest civilian honours from India's Sports Ministry

Today two of the living legends of Indian cinema, <keyword id="1687" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dilip-Kumar">Dilip Kumar</keyword> and Amitabh Bachchan, were felicitated with Padma Vibhushan awards, the second highest civilian honour of India. 
 
Dilip Kumar, who is unwell these days, could not attend the award ceremony but Amitabh Bachchan was there and looked dapper in a black bandgala. Even his son Abhishek Bachchan and maternal grandson Agastya Nanda were wearing black bandgala, and came across as the close-knit family that they are. 
 
Also present from the Bachchan family were his wife Jaya Bachchan, daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and daughter Shweta Nanda with husband Nikhil Nanda. 
 
The megastar had tweeted about the ceremony a day before, after he attended the rehearsals.
