Mukul Arora of SAIF Partners believes that along with the unique perspective of running a business, a founder-turned-investor must bring more to the table. “That is 20% of what is needed to be an investor, so if founders come in with a mindset that there is an 80% left for which I will have to unlearn and relearn, they can become good investors. Just being a founder is not sufficient, you have to be hardworking and hungry to learn a lot,” said Arora. He added that while in the US there have been many such examples, the Indian startup ecosystem is not yet mature. Being a founder, one also tends to have the habit of creating new products. A VC enables products and not creates them. That is an understanding a founder needs to have before turning into a VC, adds Singhal. “Founders can have strong viewpoints but as an investor it’s also important to have flexibility,” said Singhal.

Here's how startup founders can become good funders

Taking lessons from the <keyword id="541988" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="SnapDeal">Snapdeal</keyword> episode, in which its major investor <keyword id="163404" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Softbank">SoftBank</keyword> took decision to sell-out the online marketplace, <keyword id="6354720" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ola">Ola</keyword>’s parent company modified regulatory terms and gave more powers to the owners. <keyword id="4545821" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="ani-technologies-private-limited">ANI Technologies Private Limited</keyword>, which owns and operates India’s top ride-hailing app Ola, amended the Articles of Association and modified some of the regulatory terms to give greater control to Ola founders Bhavish Aggarwal and Ankit Bhati. As per the revised terms, SoftBank, which is Ola’s biggest stakeholder, and its affiliates need approval from Aggarwal, Bhati and company's board to purchase any additional shares of the company from other stakeholders. SoftBank will own over 30% stake in Ola after the last financing round. "The measures are aimed at giving the founders more power, even as they continue to dilute their shareholding to (access more capital) and take on Uber,” a banker who tracks the company closely told ET. Aggarwal and Bhati will also be issued additional shares in Ola to ensure their holding does not fall below 10.9% from the current 12.01%. ET reported they may get an additional four lakh shares, which will be worth Rs 520 crore. This move comes after SoftBank initiated talks of Snapdeal’s sellout to <keyword id="6354742" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Flipkart">Flipkart</keyword>, which reflects concerns of deep-pocketed investors taking major decisions. Snapdeal's CEO Kunal Bahl, in an email to employees in April, wrote that "our investors are driving the discussions around the way forward, for the company. Ola raised $250 million from SoftBank at a valuation of around $3 billion in November 2016. During the negotiation for the round, SoftBank had offered to invest close to $1 billion in Ola which would have given it a controlling stake in Ola, one source told ET. "But Aggarwal decided to take less money from SoftBank and raise more capital from other investors, both existing and new,” ET quoted sources.

The Indian who posted the biggest gain in wealth over the past year is reported to be Dhiraj Rajaram, the 40-year-old founder of Bengaluru-based analytics firm <keyword id="6713503" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mu-Sigma">Mu Sigma</keyword> are some to state. Rajaram saw his personal fortune rise six-fold, to Rs 17,800 crore. His ranking has risen 127 spots to No. 38, according to the Hurun India Rich List for 2015. There are 76 new faces among the 296 who made it to the Hurun India Rich List this year, with the cut-off level being personal wealth of Rs 1,600 crore. Snapdeal's Kunal Bahl, 32, is a new entrant, jumping straight to the 243rd spot with a wealth of Rs 2,314 crore.
 <keyword id="198636" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Vijay-Shekhar-Sharma">Vijay Shekhar Sharma</keyword>, 38, of mobile wallet and ecommerce firm <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Now-refill-your-Paytm-wallet-at-the-nearest-kirana-store/articleshow/48770295.cms">Paytm</a>, and Naveen Tewari, 39, of the mobile ad network InMobi are also a part of the list.
 

	Most of these technology and internet companies have raised significant amounts of private equity capital at substantial valuations over the past year. Flipkart's latest fund raise valued the firm at $15 billion, and Snapdeal's valued it close to $5 billion. Most of the new-age startup founders are also exceptional in that they are self-made; 85% of those in the list are part of family businesses.
 

	"Despite the weakening of the stock market and the rupee, the Hurun India Rich List expanded by 76 entrepreneurs, showing the resilience and dynamism of the Indian private sector," said Anas Rahman Junaid, India head, Hurun Report. The Hurun Report was started by researcher Rupert Hoogewerf. The first report, in 1999, was on the rich in China, and Hoogewerf has since been regularly bringing out a China rich list. The India initiative began two years ago.
 At the top, Mukesh Ambani was followed by Dilip Sanghvi of Sun Pharma, S P Hinduja &amp; family of the Hinduja Group, Shiv Nadar of HCL, and Pallonji Mistry of the <keyword id="261354" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shapoorji-Pallonji-Group">Shapoorji Pallonji Group</keyword>. For the first time, Wipro chairman <keyword id="6419840" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Azim-Premji">Azim Premji</keyword> fell off the top 5 rankings.
