Everyday, the dimly lit and shabby <keyword id="30587" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="bhatinda">Bhatinda</keyword> railway station in the Indian state of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=punjab&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Punjab</a> comes to life sharp at 9 pm. The reason? The arrival of a passenger train that’s been long christened as the <keyword id="739669" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cancer-Train">Cancer train</keyword> on platform no 2. 
 
The train leaves Bhatinda around 9.25 pm and covers a distance of about 325 km with 26 halts to reach <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=bikaner&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Bikaner</a> in the Indian state of Rajasthan at 6 am. Sometimes, it’s an hour or two late. 
 
The most remarkable feature of this train is that 60% of its population are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=cancer&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">cancer</a> patients of all ages who come from all across <keyword id="6354953" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Punjab">Punjab</keyword>. This 12-coach train has gained its name from a sudden increase in cancer cases in Punjab that many blame on pesticide use, growing pollution and hardly any response by authorities. 
 
On an average, this train is the lifeline of 100 cancer patients daily, along with 200 other co-travellers and is almost always packed to near capacity. 
 The ticket is priced at Rs 210, but for cancer patients the eight hour journey to <keyword id="1380" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="bikaner">Bikaner</keyword> is free, while one accompanying attendant gets a concession of 75 percent.

All the patients aboard the train undertake this journey to visit Acharya Tulsi Regional Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Prince Bijay Singh Memorial Hospital, in Bikaner, which like many hospitals in Punjab is also covered for benefits under the Mukh Mantri Punjab Cancer Raahat Kosh Scheme (MMPCRKS). 
 
One of them is a frail 68-year-old Madan Lal who along with his sister boards the sleeper coach, the only compartment with reserved seats, which allows him to lie down on the seat. 
 
All the remaining coaches are of the general category, where passengers jostle to find space. 
 
Lal, who hails from Mallan village in Faridkot district of Punjab has been undergoing treatment for cancer in his food pipe since the last year and has made over 30 visits to the Bikaner hospital. 
 
The first question that comes to mind is invariably this, ‘Why are scores of cancer patients from Punjab travelling to a far-off place in Rajasthan for treatment when Punjab itself boasts of state of the art facilities for cancer treatment?’ 
 
No matter how many people you ask, the answer for that is the same, and equally alarming. As Lal reveals, he did go to Faridkot Government Hospital more than four times last year when his condition deteriorated, however he never got a chance to see any doctor despite waiting for long hours.

Additionally, the fact that it is incredibly hard to avail the cash incentives under MMPCRKS in Punjab without any political connection and that the poor are almost always neglected in the government hospital in the state has also attributed to patients taking to the hospital in Bikaner, which is one of the country’s 19 regional cancer research centres and for the cancer-striken in Punjab, the nearest place where treatment is free, and medicines cheap. 
 
Take for instance, Surjeet Kaur, who spent Rs 30,000 in Bhatinda hospitals for chemotherapy for breast cancer or Satya Devi who spent close to Rs 1 lakh for therapy on a cancerous growth on her lip. In the end, both fo them had to go to Bikaner anyway. 
 
Lodging and food in Bikaner come cheap too, making it a lucrative option for patients. A room at a dharamshala in Bikaner costs Rs 50, while a thali in the hospital canteen is only Rs 5. 
 The patients on this train are mostly small farmers from the southern districts of Punjab- Mansa, Sangrur, Bhatinda, Faridkot, Moga, Muktsar, Ferozepur and Sangrur, which together make up the <keyword id="602657" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Malwa-region">Malwa region</keyword>. 
 
It is in this Malwa region that scores of farmers and their families are coming to grips with cancer and numerous health problems due to the lush fields hiding a scary tale. 
 Malwa, which is also Punjab’s cotton belt, requires the use of a startling amount of <keyword id="6444775" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="pesticides">pesticides</keyword>. Reportedly, farmers in this region use 15 different pesticide sprays and the unregulated and excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides have resulted in farmers and their families living in a cesspool of toxicity.

In 2011, it was also found that Punjab’s farmers use of pesticides is 923 grams per hectare was way above the national average of 570g/ha. Even worse is the fact that farmers also end up using the empty pesticide cans to store not only water but also food, which get contaminated with high heavy-metal toxicity. 
 
The residents have little choice than to drink highly polluted water or bathe in tap water that are sourced from canals where industrial effluents are discharged with impunity. 
 Many of the farmers blame the success of the 1970’s <keyword id="50335" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Green-Revolution">Green Revolution</keyword> for their sorry state right now. It was during then that the farmers had switched to a combo formula of high yield seeds-fertilizers-pesticide-water from traditional farming methods. 
 
Though, a few years ago, the Punjab government set up water purifiers in villages prone to cancer cases, but it was of little help as those were not cleaned properly. 
 
Meanwhile, hundreds of patients crowd the platform to get on the train hoping against hope while there continues to be atleast 18 deaths due to cancer in the state everyday.

Flipkart's Shopsy crosses the 10 million+ mark on Play Store backed by festive purchases

New Delhi, Feb 28 () Fitch Ratings on Friday said HPCL-Mittal Energy Limited's credit metrics over 2019-20 and 2020-21 financial years would worsen by more than previously expected due to near-term weakness in refining margins and a faster pace of its petrochemical (petchem) capex. Earlier this week, Moody's Investors Service downgraded the corporate family rating of HMEL to Ba2 from Ba1 due to weak refining margins arising from a slump in fuel demand. In a statement, Fitch Ratings said while credit metrics will worsen in the current and the next financial year, "an accelerated earnings contribution from petchem will lead to faster deleveraging, resulting in net leverage (as defined by adjusted net debt/operating EBITDAR) coming down to below 5-times by FY23." The net leverage is still within Fitch's negative rating sensitivities for HMEL's Standalone Credit Profile (SCP) of 'bb-'. HMEL expects to start commercial operations of its petchem project by April 2021, a year ahead of its previous expectation. It spent R 3,800 crore during the first nine months of current fiscal and is likely to top Rs 6,000 crore for the financial year, compared with Fitch's previous expectations of Rs 3,500 crore. The company, which operates an 11.3 million tonnes a year oil refinery at Bhatinda in Punjab, is in the process of setting up a dual-feed petrochemical capacity of 1.2 million metrics tons per annum (mtpa). The project, which commenced in October 2017, was originally planned to be completed by March 2022. However, the company now intends to complete it by April 2021. The firm, which is an equal joint venture of Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) and steel czar Lakshmi N Mittal's Mittal Energy Investments, expects FY22 to be the first full year of petchem operations, with an EBITDA contribution of around USD 400-500 million. "However, we have assumed that it takes longer for the petchem project to stabilise and turn profitable, contributing around USD 115 million of EBITDA in FY22," it said. Fitch expects net leverage to peak at around 7x over FY20-FY21, before improving to below 5x in FY22 and below 4x in FY23. The leverage spike in FY21 is also affected by a one-off 60-day shutdown period for major maintenance of the refinery and integration of the petchem operations. "We had earlier expected leverage to range around 6x during FY20-FY21 and fall to around 5x by FY23," it said. HMEL reported EBITDA of Rs 2,600 crore during April-December 2019, with a gross refining margin (GRM) of USD 9.6 per barrel versus USD 10.3 in FY19. The reduction was in line with the industry due to strong new supply from China, volatility in crude prices leading to inventory losses, and falling heavy-fuel oil cracks in light of the tougher marine fuel regulations by the International Maritime Organization IMO from January 2020. Fitch said it has revised down its industry-wide GRM expectations, given the continuing surplus in the refining markets and also weaker-than-expected diesel spreads. The refining margins are also likely to be weighed down by the coronavirus situation in the near term but refining margins are expected to improve over the medium term, benefitting from strong diesel spreads driven by the IMO regulations, it said. "Sustained volatility in GRMs, lower earnings from the petchem project, or weaker demand for petroleum products if COVID-19 prevails for a prolonged period would be credit negative. "Any delays or challenges in the integration of HMEL's petchem project could also have an impact on deleveraging and add downward pressure to HMEL's SCP, which has little headroom at 'bb-'," Fitch added. HMEL's credit metrics to worsen due to weak refining margins: Fitch Ratings

New Delhi, Feb 26 () Moody's Investors Service has downgraded the corporate family rating of HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd to Ba2 from Ba1, and changed its outlook on the rating to stable from negative. The rating was downgraded due to weak refining margins arising from a slump in fuel demand, it said in a statement. "The downgrade to Ba2 reflects the deterioration in HMEL's credit metrics, driven by the weak refining environment in Asia as well as the company's expansion into petrochemicals, which has kept HMEL's borrowings at elevated levels," said Sweta Patodia, a Moody's analyst. The weak industry conditions are reflected in the Singapore benchmark refining margins, which declined to around USD 3.7 per barrel for 2019 compared to its historical average of USD 6-7 a barrel. "This decline in the benchmark was due to the extremely weak fuel oil spreads, which in turn were driven by International Maritime Organization's new regulation restricting the use of heavy fuel oil in marine transportation," it said. Also, the credit metrics of HPCL-Mittal Energy Ltd (HMEL) was impacted by its ongoing expansion into petrochemicals which has led to an increase in its borrowings. The company, which operates an 11.3 million tonnes a year oil refinery at Bhatinda in Punjab, is in the process of setting up a dual-feed petrochemical capacity of 1.2 million metrics tons per annum (mtpa). Tightening regulations on the use of heavy fuel oil in the shipping industry, which kicked off in January 2020, could lead to higher demand for middle distillates and thus provide some support to refining margins, particularly for complex refiners like HMEL, it said. "The industry environment continues to remain uncertain and sustained weakness in regional refining margins could delay improvement in HMEL's credit metrics," the rating agency said. Moreover, the impact of the coronavirus outbreak on the regional demand growth for petroleum products remains uncertain. Furthermore, HMEL's refinery will undergo 35 days of a planned shutdown during September-October 2020, which will constrain its earnings and cash flow during the fiscal year ending March 31, 2021 (fiscal 2021). "The stable outlook reflects Moody's view that the company will maintain high utilisation of its refinery resulting in strong operating cash flow such that its credit metrics will continue to support its standalone credit profile," the statement said. HMEL's Ba2 rating is supported by the company's high complexity refinery that generates strong refining margins and by its 15-year offtake agreement with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) that provides high visibility on sales volumes. "The rating, however, is constrained by the moderate scale of the company's operations, with a single refinery and crude distillation unit, and by its exposure to the cyclical nature of the refining industry," it added. HMEL is privately owned with HPCL and Mittal Energy Investments holding a 49 per cent stake each. HPCL is in turn 51.1 per cent owned by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), which is 67.7 per cent owned by the Government of India. Mittal Energy Investments is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Mittal Investments SARL. As of December 3, 2019, HMEL had cash and cash equivalents of Rs 790 crore which along with expected cash flow from operations of around Rs 2,600-2,700 crore will be sufficient to cover routine capital expenditures of around Rs 1,060 crore and Rs 930 crore of debt maturities over the next 12 months. "Moody's is unlikely to upgrade the ratings until HMEL completes its ongoing expansion and successfully ramps-up its petrochemical plant," it added. ANZ DRR

New Delhi, May 26 () Billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries has launched an online extension of its grocery business under JioMart brand across 200 cities. The service is being offered in all leading metros (Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata), and even in smaller towns like Mysuru, Bhatinda and Dehradun. JioMart is now delivering in more than 200 cities, Damodar Mall, the chief executive officer of Reliance Retail's grocery business said in a tweet. JioMart last month started a pilot project serving users in three neighbourhoods surrounding Mumbai. Credit Suisse said, "The national roll-out provides customers with a useful alternative to existing players (BigBasket, Grofers) as online grocery orders have spiked, given the fewer store visits". D-Mart, it said, mentioned that April revenues are down 45 per cent year-on-year as nearly 50 per cent of the stores are shut or have very restricted hours of operation. Therefore, online orders should help offset some of the lower sales in physical stores. CLSA said as of now, the website will only use Reliance's offline grocery supply chain as its backbone and deliver to homes. "Success at its ongoing beta tests in Navi Mumbai, which also encompasses mom and pop stores and uses WhatsApp as a platform to order, will be later extended to pan-India," it said. Users can order from a full suite of grocery items by visiting the JioMart website. Products include fruits and vegetables, dairy and baked goods, staples, snacks and branded foods, beverages, and personal and home care. Reliance's private labels also featured prominently. "While it does not commit on a delivery timeline when ordering (due to the lockdown), it aims to deliver orders within a two-day timeframe," CLSA said. Eventually, like other online retailers, it is possible that Reliance integrates its entire retail offerings, including fashion, lifestyle and consumer electronics, onto one super e-commerce platform and mobile app. "This, along with a pan-India extension of partnerships with mom &amp; pop stores after a successful beta test and ramp-up of this new commerce venture is crucial in Reliance's grand plan of converting Jio's 400 million-plus subscribers into customers for its eCommerce and other offerings," CLSA said. Recent partnerships with Facebook-owned WhatsApp for JioMart will only help in increasing monetisation opportunities by increasing the convenience and reach of consumers. The grocery platform was previously piloting deliveries only in select areas of Mumbai. "JioMart has seen a 4x rise in online orders from a low base. With its pan India presence JioMart now directly competes with Amazon and Flipkart in eCommerce," Bernstein said in a separate report. Grocery is 70 per cent of the Indian retail market, 90 per cent-plus unorganised, driven by Kirana stores/small retailers. "Organised penetration is less than 10 per cent while online penetration for grocery is less than 1 per cent," it said. Facebook has made a bigger push into e-commerce with the launch of Shops. "The idea is to bring millions of small businesses online. This will allow free online storefronts for small businesses and retailers and expand Facebook presence across Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger," Bernstein said. "Facebook shops will be complimentary to WhatsApp business use to sign and onboard Kirana stores for JioMart (grocery app of Reliance Retail)." Credit Suisse said JioMart currently fulfills the order by own entity and kiranas likely to be on-boarded subsequently. "The platform lists all the major grocery categories like fruits and vegetables, staples, dairy and bakery, snacks, beverages, personal care, home care and baby care. "In terms of pricing, Reliance has extended the Smart promise of 'minimum 5 per cent off on MRP' to all products on JioMart. The discount is higher on its private label brands, and is competitive to branded products," it said. Reliance Retail had been piloting the initiative in Navi Mumbai, Thane and Kalyan among select population group. It was serving these customers through both Kirana stores and their own warehouses. It also set up Smart Points, which were acting as delivery points in neighbourhood. However, orders post the national launch are being serviced by Reliance Smart and Fresh stores, Sahakari Bhandar stores (owned by Reliance retail), and is not yet fully leveraging kirana network (as on-boarding of Kirana stores is still ongoing), Credit Suisse said. "Just prior to the national launch, Reliance Retail tapped the WhatsApp customer base in the three pilot regions to source orders. In our view, it was just a test phase of integration. The orders were available only for pick-up from nearby Kirana store, whose details were sent to the customer via WhatsApp. However, the national launch, so far, does not have integration with WhatsApp," it said. The brokerage said it placed an order on JioMart but the delivered order value was 55 per cent of the booked order value, due to inventory limitation in the nearby Sahakari Bhandar store. ANZ BAL

Reliance launches JioMart across 200 cities; analysts say co eyeing spike in online grocery orders

In a press conference a short while ago, the <keyword id="107430" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="National-Disaster-Management-Authority">National Disaster Management Authority</keyword> said that all possible relief measures are being provided not only to Nepal, but also the affected areas within India, which includes UP, <keyword id="30033" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Bihar">Bihar</keyword> and <keyword id="6357783" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="West-Bengal">West Bengal</keyword>. The death toll has been rising rapidly and Nepal has requested for all possible help from India, it’s closest neighbour. 
 The <keyword id="119446" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="National-Disaster-Response-Force">National Disaster Response Force</keyword> is sending a total of 10 teams to the affected areas in Nepal. Each team consisting of 45 trained personnel will be carrying along with them a cache of relief equipment including cutting and breathing equipment, airlifting bags, stretchers, medicines, satellite phones, other communication devices such as VHF and HF as well as paramedics and doctors. 6 of these teams will be airlifting from Ghaziabad near the National Capital Region, where as the remaining four will leave from Bhatinda today. The NDRF isn’t ruling out sending more teams if required. 
 
In addition, 2 C17 Globemasters have been dispatched to provide further help in the rescue operations in devastated Nepal. 10 Air Force planes have also been sent to Nepal to oversee and help with the rescue operations. M 17 choppers that were sent to Nepal, have however, had to return to India, given they were unable to land because of the bad weather. 
 4 NDRF teams have also been dispatched to Bihar, where the death toll o the Indian side has been the highest, with as many as 22 deaths reported. A total of 34 people have reportedly died so far in India because of the <keyword id="6362774" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="earthquake">earthquake</keyword>, from Bihar, West Bengal and UP.
