Backed by a strong profile of entrepreneurial professionals, a new centre for innovation and entrepreneurship in <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> - <keyword id="4057711" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="gopalakrishnan-deshpande-centre">Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Centre</keyword> - will nurture three entrepreneurial initiatives every year by providing them all the assistance they need to turn their ideas into reality. 
 Three IIT Madras alumni — Jaishree Deshpande, her husband who is an Indian American venture capitalist Gururaj Deshpande and S. <keyword id="6530028" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kris-Gopalakrishnan">Kris Gopalakrishnan</keyword> — have together launched this centre as a future hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. They will be funding $500,000 per year over the next 5 years. The centre will perform the role of an angel investor. Every program the centre seeds will ultimately run on its own if it turns successful. 
 
Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, said that the Gopalakrishnan-Deshpande Centre was being created at the right time to give a big fillip to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in IIT.

In a bid to raise awareness about the government's drive to go digital, it has gone completely cashless in the fest season. 
 
That means, from food stalls to ticket sales, visitors are swiping their debit cards or using online wallets and other digital modes to make payments. Bank representatives on the campus are guiding visitors. 
 
In line with the fresh theme of the event, the organising team has focused on ambience so a walk through the campus can give visitors a feel of walking in the woods. 
 
To make up for the loss of green cover that took a hit during the December cyclone, the Saarang team will also be planting 100 saplings on the campus. 
 The fest will see 90 large scale competitive events, 200 informal shows, 14 lecture demonstrations, 6 professional shows and 7 world culture show acts, including graffiti, sand art and street dancing. Other than classical, choreo, EDM and rock shows, a feature is the spotlight lectures which in cludes a line-up of doyens like T M Krishna, Prachi Tehlan, Anirudh Ravichander, Shekhar Gupta, Siddharth and <keyword id="121606" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Gautam-Menon">Gautam Menon</keyword>, among others. New Delhi, Jun 23 () The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on Tuesday said it has launched the "world's first" online BSc degree course in Programming and Data Science. The course will be open to anyone who has passed class 12 with English and Maths at class 10 level, and enrolled in any on-campus undergraduate course. Even the current batch of students who are completing their class 12 are eligible to apply. Graduates and working professionals can also take up this programme. The programme was launched by Union Human Resource Development (HRD)Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' and Minister of State for HRD Sanjay Dhotre. "IIT Madras has introduced world's first-ever online BSc degree programme in Data Science and Programming. Analysis reveals that every year 7 to 7.5 lakh Indian students go abroad in search of better education and our talent as well as our revenue goes outside the country," Nishank said at the launch. He said institutions such as IIT Madras have the "vision and mission" to help the nation move forward on its path to self-reliance by bringing such quality education and unique courses right here in India. "Even during this challenging time, when the nation is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and everyone is forced to be at home, IITs have come together to innovate for the sake of the nation. Several innovations such as ventilators, masks and drones have come from the continuous research from IITs. I am confident that this educational initiative will help many students in India," the Union minister added. According to officials at IIT Madras, Data Science is one of the fastest growing sectors that is predicted to create 11.5 million jobs by 2026. The programme will be delivered on a state-of-the-art online portal and will attract learners from even remote parts of India where outreach of digital literacy is minimal and will help them stay ahead in their career journeys, he said. Ramamurthi said the programme will have videos from faculty, weekly assignments and in-person invigilated exams just like any other regular course It will hone students' skills in managing data, visualising patterns to gain managerial insights, model uncertainties and build models that assist in producing forecasts to make effective business decisions, he said. The course will be offered in three different stages - Foundational Programme, Diploma Programme and Degree Programme. At each stage, students will have the freedom to exit from the programme and receive a certificate, diploma or a degree, respectively, from IIT Madras. These students will go through course lectures online, submit online assignments and write an in-person qualifier exam at the end of four weeks. In contrast to the typical admission processes of IITs, which are constrained due to the limited number of in-campus seats, in this programme all students who clear (with an overall score of 50 pc) the qualifier exam will be eligible to register for the foundational programme, he added. IIT Madras launches world's first online BSc degree in Programming and Data Science

The QS Asia University Rankings has found out that Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has made it to the top 50 universities in Asia this year by jumping 13 places from its position last year. It is now ranked 43. With this, four IITs – Kanpur, Madras, Bombay and Delhi are featured among the top ones in Asia. 
 
IIT-Kanpur gained 10 places to be ranked as the 48th university. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru which remained India's best university with 33rd rank was closely followed by IIT-Bombay (35th rank) and IIT-Delhi (36th rank). If we go beyond the top 50, IIT-Kharagpur was placed 51st and two other IITs - Roorkee (78) and Guwahati (94) - made it to the top 100. 
 <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> (DU), which had got 91st position last year, jumped several steps and was ranked 66th. University of Calcutta was ranked 108th, a big jump from 149th last year, University of Mumbai (145), while Banaras Hindu University was placed at 155th position. <keyword id="49466" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panjab-University">Panjab University</keyword> featured in the 251 to 300 bracket. Overall, like last year, National University of Singapore (NUS) has been ranked the best university in Asia, followed by University of Hong Kong. 
 The QS report has clearly brought good news for IITs, especially for <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword>. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, the Director of the institution said: "We are delighted to be listed in the top 50 Asian Universities. We have been focused on growing and improving our research, teaching and overall curriculum as part of our strategic plan 2020 and it appears to be paying off. We will persevere and do our best to move still further up in the Asian and global rankings in the coming years.” 
 
When asked what are the points IIT-Madras is losing out on, P Sriram, Dean of Administration, said: “It is in the perception scores (results of surveys), especially, the academic perception scores. We have to make IIT-Madras more visible internationally and make our research strengths visible in a widespread manner in order to enhance our academic reputation score.” 
 
With 23 universities in the top 350, India's performance was fifth best among the 17 countries featured in the list. National University of Singapore, University of Hong Kong and Nanyang Technological University took the top three spots in the rankings which evaluated 920 universities from Asia. 
 Notably, the rankings by British company <keyword id="990919" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Quacquarelli-Symonds">Quacquarelli Symonds</keyword> were expanded to include Asia's 350 best universities, an addition of 50 from last year. Methodological enhancements too were in place - staff with a PhD was included in the parameters. Academic reputation (30%), reputation among prospective employers (20%), faculty/student ratio (15%), citations per paper (10%), papers per faculty (10%), staff with a PhD (5%), proportion of international faculty (2.5%), proportion of international students (2.5%), proportion of inbound exchange students (2.5%) and proportion of outbound exchange students (2.5%) were the deciding factors for ranking the institutions.

With IIT Madras' entry this year, four IITs make their place among Asia's top 50 universities

In its bid to build a solar India, <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> announced recently that it will be developing an efficient, cheap and clean way of power supply to villages using microgrids. For this, the institute has signed a MoU with power and automation technology company ABB India under government’s <keyword id="3873307" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="uchchatar-avishkar-yojana">Uchchatar Avishkar Yojana</keyword> scheme. 
 
They will be looking at developing a power management system to optimize the operation of multiple micro grids, with or without grid connection, to transmit electricity reliably to small villages. This system will also enable the integration of individual solar PV rooftops to the micro grid of a village. Such grid clusters are expected to have the capability of generating and using renewable energy locally from one kilowatt to a few hundred kilowatts. This inter-connection of micro grids with the existing distribution system will also help reduce outages and cut electricity costs. 
 
As of now, the government is looking at a generation capacity of 40 GW in the next five years through grid-connected solar photovoltaic rooftops and small scale solar PV plants. 
 
The project scope includes micro grids of 20 to 100 kW capacity equipped with battery storage. Detailed studies and simulation of the various system components along with related control and optimization logic, protection criteria, monitoring and communication will also be undertaken. 
 
"While India has set an ambitious target for solar energy generation, IIT Madras has been at the forefront in developing decentralised energy-efficient solar PV micro grid solutions tailored to meet India's urban, rural and off-grid power requirements," said Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director of IIT Madras. 
 Meanwhile, ABB India's managing director <keyword id="222145" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanjeev-Sharma">Sanjeev Sharma</keyword> said - "In a country as huge and diverse as India, it is important to design models of integration with power management and load balancing for proven micro grids technology with the existing grid infrastructure." 
 
Interestingly, ABB’s Access to Electricity social initiative in India has already demonstrated significant impact in the country. 
 The company has brought <keyword id="70990" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Solar-power">solar power</keyword> to 1,200 households in the Rajasthan desert and to over 100 households in the world’s largest delta region of the Sunderbans. This project follows two ongoing CSR projects with IIT-M; one for the design, installation and commissioning of a micro grid able to supply 50 kW power to a rural village, the other one to help establish and research the Center of Battery Engineering at IIT-M. 
 
ABB recently announced the setting up of India’s first solar-powered micro grid to provide uninterrupted power supply to its factories in Vadodara. 
 
With the slow but steady work by the institute, industry and the government, it seems India is not too far away from achieving its solar dream.

Several IITs like Gandhinagar, Mandi, Patna, Indore etc are breaking away from the old-school method of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=teaching">teaching</a> and disciplining students. 
 
For instance, IIT Gandhinagar is not policing students and have given freedom to pupils to define their own limitations. 
 
“IIT Gandhinagar believes in giving freedom to its students by treating them like adults. There is no policing on campus. Our students are allowed to define their own limitations. We do not keep tabs on their movements within the campus; neither do we track their attendance," director, SK Jain, told Economic Times. 
 
IITs, which were mostly built after 2008, are engaged in brand-building to click with potential students. 
 While, <keyword id="666989" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Indore">IIT Indore</keyword> has revamped its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=B+Tech">BTech curriculum</a> to give its students more time for research projects, IIT Patna and Mandi are trying to integrate some of their courses with the heritage and culture of Bihar and Himachal Pradesh, respectively. 
 
"IIT Patna will take seriously its original charter of focusing on interdisciplinary research," Ajay Chowdhary, chairman - board of governors, told ET. 
 Meanwhile, <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> will 'serious' tag to the <keyword id="530930" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="new-IITs">new IITs</keyword> - Palakkad and Tirupati. 
 
IIT Ropar is giving unlimited access to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=internet">internet</a> to students, which is not the case in many IITs. 
 
IITs, which will begin with first academic session soon, are also getting retired professors. 
 
"Retired faculty is around 50% of total faculty at these two institutes. The remaining will come from IIT Madras. It is the faculty that defines an institute and we want to ensure that Tirupati and Palakkad have the best," IIT Madras director, Bhaskar Ramamurthi, told ET. 
 
IIT Indore too is tapping overseas talent and IIT Mandi too is aligning some of its courses and research with the Himalayan region.

The unprecedented downpour and flooding in Chennai that brought the city to a standstill has also forced the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras to reschedule its<a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/placement" target="_blank">placement</a> to early January. 
 
The placement will now start on January 6, 2016, the institute said in a release. It was stalled after the first day on December 1. 
 "Companies have been informed about the interviews being postponed. All companies have been very understanding and have responded positively and assured that they will definitely come and recruit from <keyword id="6356755" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="IIT-Madras">IIT Madras</keyword> despite the disruption," said V Babu, placement advisor at IIT Madras. 
 
The first five days, till January 10, will have two sessions per day (7 am to 2 pm and 4 pm to 11 pm). There will be no interviews on January 11, while January 12-14 will have one session per day (10 am to 5 5 pm), the IIT statement said. 
 
The decision was taken in consultation with student representatives, IIT Madras director Bhaskar Ramamurthi and dean of students Sivakumar, besides Babu. 
 
On December 1, IIT Madras students received six offers from five companies in the graveyard session (beginning 12 in the midnight). The forenoon session saw 85 offers coming from 18 companies while there were 26 offers from eight companies in the afternoon session. This added up to 117 offers from 31 companies. 
 
Invitations are being sent to the companies informing them of the revised schedule. "The students and the placement team are optimistic that the event will be a success," the release stated.

Chennai, Jul 11(): The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras has launched a young research fellow programme aimed at motivating undergraduate students taking up a career in research and application of deeper learning. The programme provides an one-to-one interaction with IIT faculty members to participate in research. The students would also benefit personally through a career and life coaching programme concurrently offered by the 1979 alumni, a press release said on Saturday. "IIT-Madras has long been known for producing world-class undergraduate students. Today, IIT-M is very much a research intensive university where world-class research is a daily pursuit," IIT Madras Director Bhaskar Ramamurthi said. "This programme blends these two strengths by giving select undergraduate students an opportunity to discover the excitement of taking up research early," he said. The Young Research Fellow project has been funded by the 1979 batch and it was signed on July 10 by IIT Madras dean (alumni and corporate relations) Mahesh Panchagnula on behalf of the alumni, the release said. Accordingly, a year-long programme and upto 20 fellowships were planned to be unveiled in the first year. IIT-M unveils Young Research Fellow programme for UG students

The Higher Education Ministry may be trying to push the IITs and plan many more, the students aren’t thinking alike. And the proof comes with the fact that most engineering aspirant students who can’t make the cut to the old IITs are opting for NITs or even prime private colleges. 
The course at the IIIT Hyderabad is more reputed than the same one at a less prominent IIT," a student from Bengaluru told The Economic Times. "The only way I would choose to study at another IIT would be if I would be able to take a branch transfer after the first year from a lesser-known IIT to an older IIT." 
 
While the number of operational IITs has risen to 18 in 2015 from seven in 2007, new IITs - despite their premium 'IIT' tag - are losing favour both among top students and recruiters, as teething troubles such as poor infrastructure, paucity of faculty and lack of role models persist. Students who do well in JEE but fail to ginto one of the older IITs would rather go to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) or top private engineering colleges than a relatively new IIT. And recruiters say if there is a pecking order then they would prefer to go to the older, more established IITs, than the NITs and then the new IITs, confirms the ET news report. 
 
Since 2008, 11 new IITs have started operating - in Indore, Mandi, Ropar, Patna, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Bhubaneswar, Varanasi, Palakkad and Tirupati. The last two start their first batches this year. 
 
But most of them are still to build the infrastructure and all face an acute shortage of faculty, which now reflect on their ability to attract students and recruiters. 
"Faculty shortage is a problem that all the IITs are currently dealing with. This will surely hit the new IITs but all the institutes have to find a way out," Bhaskar Ramamurthi, director at IIT Madras told the financial daily. Beginning 2008, old IITs went through about 50% expansion in student intake over a period of seven years while faculty intake could never match this pace, he said. 
 
Anurag Sharma, dean at IIT Delhi, agreed that the new institutions take at least 5 to 6 years to mature. "It happens to all the institutes in this stage," he said. Sharma also pointed out that each new IIT was given to an old IIT to mentor and that it depends on the mentor to decide whether the new IIT is ready to be launched. "In the case of IIT Delhi, we decided to take another year to formally launch IIT Jammu. The allocation of land took some time. This was purely IIT Delhi's call," he told the ET.

Students ready to choose private colleges and NITs but not the new IITs

The Department of Space on Thursday said it has signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with Chennai-based small rocket company <keyword id="7122982" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="agnikul-cosmos">Agnikul Cosmos</keyword> Pvt Ltd to access the facilities and technical expertise available in <keyword id="116095" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Space-Research-Organisation">Indian Space Research Organisation</keyword> (<keyword id="6358064" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="isro">ISRO</keyword>) centres. According to DoS, this is the first NDA to be signed after the establishment of IN-SPACe, the authorization and regulatory body for enabling private players to undertake space activities in India. Under the NDA, Agnikul Cosmos will be enabled to access the facilities and technical expertise available in ISRO centres to proceed with their launch vehicle development programme. The start-up company is located in the National Centre for Combustion Research and Development, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. The NDA was signed in the presence of Space Secretary and ISRO Chairman Dr. K Sivan, and IIT-Madras Director Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi. R. Umamaheswaran, Scientific Secretary, ISRO, was the signatory on behalf of Department of Space for the NDA and Agnikul Cosmos CEO Srinath Ravichandran on behalf of the company. The ISRO officials assured all support to Agnikul Cosmos for testing and qualifying its rocket.
