<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="12020199" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="ellen-pompeo" source="Orion">Ellen Pompeo</keyword> thinks diverse representation has come a long way but that it can always be better.</li><li>She said that many white people still think if they've "checked a box," the work is over. </li></ul><p>Ellen Pompeo thinks that diversity on "<keyword id="11995413" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="greys-anatomy" source="Orion">Grey's Anatomy</keyword>" has come a long way, but better representation in Hollywood is a constant work in progress.</p><p>The series creator <a href="https://www.insider.com/greys-anatomy-diversity-shonda-rhimes-embarrassed-for-television-2021-11">Shonda Rhimes recently reflected on the show's legacy in an interview with Variety</a>, saying that the medical drama's groundbreaking diverse casting made her "embarrassed for television" because that step should have been taken sooner.</p><p>When asked about Rhimes' comments during an interview promoting <a href="https://www.insider.com/ellen-pompeo-greys-anatomy-impact-medicine-betr-remedies-2021-12">her company, Betr Remedies</a>, Pompeo told Insider that making Hollywood a more equitable space is "a huge part" of her job "every single day" and that nonmarginalized people in the industry need to think beyond simply checking boxes for on-screen diversity.</p><p>"I still find that a lot of white people still feel like they've checked a box and they're good," Pompeo said.</p><p>"I can only speak for our show, obviously. I don't work on anybody else's show, but I would say that I am still shocked at where we are," she continued. "And I think that it's a constant. We don't get somewhere and then we're there and then the work is done." </p><h2>'Grey's Anatomy' has made an effort to represent more marginalized groups in the years since it premiered in 2005</h2><div type="image" title="Ellen Pompeo smiling" height="2083" width="2784" msid="88412848" hostid="261"></div><p>"Grey's Anatomy" broke ground by <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/greys-anatomy-shonda-rhimes-legacy-ending-1235106155/">changing "the faces you see on television,"</a> as Rhimes put it to Variety, back in 2005. That diversity has come further in the nearly two decades since.</p><p>"I think 'Grey's Anatomy' today looks a lot different than it did in the beginning," Pompeo told Insider.</p><p>The show's first LGBTQ+ character, Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez), was introduced on season two in 2006, though she doesn't come out as bisexual until a few seasons later. Over a decade later, in 2018, "Grey's" introduced its <a href="https://ew.com/tv/2018/11/01/greys-anatomy-alex-landi-bio/">"first gay male surgeon,"</a> Dr. Nico Kim (Alex Landi). </p><p>As far as representing other marginalized groups, like people with disabilities, Dr. Virginia Dixon, played by the neurotypical actor Mary McDonnell, was the first doctor with autism and appeared in three episodes. The <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/health_and_wellbeing/autistic-doctors-really-house-good-doctor-greys-anatomy-tv-a9612736.html">portrayal has been criticized</a> by <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/aspergers-diary/200902/when-will-abc-get-aspergers-right">people with autism for many years</a>. </p><p>Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital welcomed its first deaf <a href="https://variety.com/2020/tv/features/greys-anatomy-first-deaf-doctor-krista-vernoff-shoshannah-stern-perfect-union-interview-1203502570/">doctor in 2018</a> for several episodes, but the show has portrayed most visibly <a href="https://www.shondaland.com/inspire/a36008847/greys-anatomy-azure-antoinette-disability/">physically disabled characters as patients</a>, not doctors or hospital staff, to date. </p><h2>Pompeo wants to see more diversity behind the camera too</h2><div type="image" title="Ellen Pompeo" height="1727" width="2302" msid="88412850" hostid="261"></div><p>The "Grey's Anatomy" lead hopes to see more diversity behind the scenes, in the rooms where the stories are crafted.</p><p>"It's not enough to just have a Black character on a show or an Asian character on a show or a nonbinary character on the show," Pompeo told Insider. "You then have to back that up and have representation in the writers room to write for that character."</p><p>"You can have 10 nonbinary characters on a show. If there isn't a nonbinary writer to write for those characters to speak to what that really is like, you're only doing a little bit of the work. You're not doing all of the work," she continued. "It's my understanding that people not only want to be seen; they want to be written for by people who know their experience, who can speak for their experience."</p><p>"Grey's Anatomy" introduced the series' first nonbinary character, Dr. Kai Bartley <a href="https://variety.com/2021/tv/features/greys-anatomy-er-fightmaster-representation-love-1235110009/">(played by E.R. Fightmaster)</a> earlier in 2021, during season 18. It's unclear whether any of the writers on the series who are writing for Bartley identify as nonbinary.</p><p>"It's work that has to constantly be tended to," Pompeo said. "It's like a garden."</p>

She told Insider that when the pandemic hit the US, her way of coping with the country's crisis was to start a series of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCg24TBGECV3esBKVvOy7fwg">Zooms called "Healing Healthcare."</a> </p><p>The series featured Pompeo in conversation with medical workers, talking about issues like "the state of healthcare" and "racism in healthcare." The goal, she said, was to "provide a space for people to have conversations and people to listen to conversations about what healthcare workers were actually going through."</p><p>When Healing Healthcare ended, Pompeo requested that her team help her find ways to continue making meaningful contributions to health equity. The goal of "health equity," according to the Institute of Medicine (via the <a href="https://www.aamc.org/news-insights/insights/why-health-equity-matters-era-health-care-transformation">Association of American Medical Colleges</a>), is to provide "care that does not vary in quality because of personal characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location, and socioeconomic status." </p><p>Pompeo's team then introduced her to Betr Remedies cofounders Livio Bisterzo and Jennifer Simone Hoffman. </p><div type="image" title="Ellen Pompeo Betr Remedies" height="2240" width="2986" msid="88359054" hostid="261"></div><p>Betr Remedies sells over-the-counter medication to the public and works with the non-profit organization SIRUM, whose mission is to donate unused (<a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/betr-remedies-announces-new-co-founder-ellen-pompeo-and-its-first-exclusive-national-retail-launch-at-walmart-301419798.html?tc=eml_cleartime">"perfectly safe, unexpired"</a>) prescription medications to underserved communities via charitable pharmacies distributing to people in need.</p><p>Pompeo told Insider she "had no idea how much actual medication goes into landfills" until she started working with Betr Remedies, which also has the goal of reducing medical waste by working with SIRUM.</p><p>"I saw this as a pretty interesting opportunity to be a part of a startup that was addressing some real issues that we have," Pompeo said of her partnership with Betr Remedies. </p><h2>Pompeo's priority now is sharing stories that make an impact — both on 'Grey's Anatomy' and in her other ventures</h2><p>Pompeo says she <a href="https://www.insider.com/ellen-pompeo-horrified-by-greys-anatomy-love-me-scene-2021-11">strives to use her platform</a> on-and-off-screen in Hollywood to tell stories about and listen to marginalized voices, particularly on her <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/tell-me-with-ellen-pompeo/id1586148064">new podcast "Tell Me With Ellen Pompeo."</a></p><p>But Pompeo, who is a co-executive producer on "Grey's Anatomy" in addition to its lead, told Insider that even though the ABC series is a medical drama, issues like <keyword id="12764187" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="pharmaceutical-waste" source="Orion">pharmaceutical waste</keyword> are "very challenging" to talk about.</p><p>So while that subject hasn't been depicted on the series yet, Pompeo notes that the writers do try to shed light on inequality in medicine whenever possible. "And had she said that today, she'd be a complete hero. It ended up being her last season on the show.  </p><p>"I'm gonna keep saying this 'cause I hope it embarrasses them," Heigl told Letterman at the time. She proceeded to say she just worked a "17-hour day," which she described as "cruel and mean."</p><p>Heigl's comments were widely reported on at the time because they came about a year after she withdrew her name from Emmys consideration in 2008.</p><p>She said in a <a href="https://ew.com/article/2008/06/12/katherine-heigl-declines-emmy-consideration/">statement to Entertainment Weekly</a> at the time that she didn't feel she "was given the material" worthy of the honor of an Emmy nomination. She exited the show in 2010 after being a series regular since the pilot episode in 2005.</p><p>On her podcast, Pompeo said Heigl was being "100% honest" and was "absolutely correct" about the hours they were working at the time. </p><p>"And she was fucking ballsy for saying it," Pompeo continued. "And she was telling the truth.
