<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Budget computer company Raspberry Pi has launched a crazily cheap and small new computer.</p><p>Pictured above, it's called the Raspberry Pi Zero, and it costs just $5 (£3.30).</p><p>It boasts some pretty impressive specs, despite its price-point. It comes with a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and can output to a 1080p screen using HDMI at 60 frames-per-second. There is no on-board storage at all, but it comes with a Micro SD card slot so users can pick how much memory they think they need.&#xa0;</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>To put those figures into context, the iPhone 4 - which launched in 2010 - also had 512MB of RAM, and only had an 800MHz processor.<p>To actually use this thing, users will need to plug in their own screen, mouse and keyboard, and by default it runs the operating system Raspbian - a version of Linux. With that done, it would operate much like any "normal" desktop computer.&#xa0;</p><p>Its size and cost also makes it an attractive candidate for building DIY "connected" objects. A user could buy a handful and rig them up to various sensors in order to turn their house into a "smart home." Older versions of the Raspberry Pi have been used for <a href="http://lifehacker.com/build-an-entire-home-automation-system-with-a-raspberry-1640844965">exactly this purpose</a>.</p><p>&#xa0;</p><p>"We've gone from the cost of four lattes to the cost of one latte," says Raspberry Pi Trading CEO Eben Upton <a href="https://vimeo.com/146893658">in a video introducing the device</a>.</p><p>In fact, it's so small, and so cheap, that the company is giving it away as a freebie in Magpi, the official Raspberry Pi magazine. "We're the first computer magazine ever to give away a computer as a cover gift," Upton claims.</p><p>The first Raspberry Pi was launched in 2012, and the company's mission is to produce low-cost devices to introduce people to the world of computer science. Nominally aimed at kids, the budget computers have become beloved by hobbyists.</p><p>"Of all the things we do at Raspberry Pi, driving down the cost of computer hardware remains one of the most important," <a href="https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/raspberry-pi-zero/">says a company blog post introducing the Pi Zero</a>. Raspberry Pi has launched an insanely small and cheap new computer

<p>It took a year to sell the first million of the card-sized barebones computers, but sales accelerated in 2013, with the 2m milestone being reached in the last week of October.</p>
<p>"It took us almost exactly a year to sell the first million Raspberry Pis," <a href="http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/5265">wrote Liz Upton from the Raspberry Pi Foundation</a>. "Going on that basis, we calculated that we might, if we were lucky, reach the second million around January 2014, or slightly afterwards - we were confident we'd get there by the end of February 2014.</p>
<p>"It was a bit of a shock at the end of last week when we got the latest sales figures and discovered that the 2,000,000th Raspberry Pi was sold in the last week of October," Upton continued.</p>
<p><em>A basic computing platform for hobbyists, teachers, pupils and corporations alike</em></p>
<p>The Raspberry Pi is a credit card-sized, bare-bones computer that uses a smartphone-like ARM processor to provide a basic and extensible computing platform for hobbyists, teachers, pupils and corporations.</p>
<p>The small computer has USB ports for a keyboard and mouse, an Ethernet port, a SD card slot, and an HDMI port for connecting to a monitor or a TV. It runs a variant of the free open-source operating system Linux, which powers many web servers and Android smartphones.</p>
<p><em>Nearly 40,000 Raspberry Pis produced a week in Wales</em></p>
<p>In October, <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/oct/08/raspberry-pi-computer-million-made-in-britain-milestone">it was announced</a> that 1m Raspberry Pis had been manufactured in Britain.</p>
<p>The initial batch of the computer were <a href="http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/509">made in China</a>, but a partnership between the Raspberry Pi Foundation, RS Components and Premier Farnell saw all Raspberry Pi manufacturing <a href="http://www.raspberrypi.org/archives/1925">moved to a Sony-owned manufacturing plant</a> in Pencoed, Wales, in September 2012.</p>
<p>Since June 2012, production of Raspberry Pis at the Pencoed factory has been ramped up from just 204 a week to nearly 40,000 in April 2013.</p>
<p><em>'More work to do to ensure that schools are ready for this new wave of mini-computers'</em></p>
<p>The Raspberry Pi has often been hailed as the affordable, programmable computer for schools, and while it certainly is a step in the right direction, school IT infrastructure isn't keeping pace.</p>
<p>"Since its launch last year, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has been on a mission to transform the education experience for students, but is it delivering? The reality is that there is more work to do to ensure that schools are ready for this new wave of mini computers," <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/oct/08/raspberry-pi-computer-million-made-in-britain-milestone">explained Nick Williams</a>, senior product manager at networking specialist Brocade.</p>
<p>"Whilst the devices on offer to schools have taken a quantum leap in affordability and accessibility, schools still exist with 20-year-old networking technology and the sums just do not add up," Williams said.</p>

<p>Over 2.5 million Pis have been sold since it was released, <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/14/raspberry-pi-model-b-plus/">according to TechCrunch</a>, and a new and more powerful model called the Raspberry Pi B+ will be the final upgrade of the original Pi product line. It's available now.</p>
<p>Even though it's inexpensive, the Raspberry Pi is a full-fledged computer running Linux. It's hugely popular in the hacker/maker crowd, and people have <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/raspberry-pi-projects-and-uses-2013-5">used the computer to power some really cool devices.</a></p>
<p>The B+ model will still cost just $35 and features a host of improvements to make the device more modular for DIY enthusiasts.</p>
<p>There's two additional USB ports, a streamlined form factor, better audio performance and power consumption, and the SD card slot has been swapped for a more recent Micro SD slot.</p>

The $35 Computer Just Got Even Better

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Google's AIY Projects program - a combination of DIY (do it yourself) and AI (artificial intelligence) - have announced a revamped set of build-it-yourself kits, aiming to bring computer <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="science">science</keyword> and programming to the masses.</strong></li><li><strong>The kits include all the tech, accessories, and instructions required to build a voice-activated speaker or an image-recognizing camera, both powered by Google AI.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Google just released a new and revamped selection of build-it-yourself AI hardware kits and a new app to help configure them, while also promising to continue to help bring programming and computer science skills to the classroom.&#xa0;</br></p><p><span>"We're taking the first of many steps to help educators integrate AIY into STEM lesson plans and help prepare students for the challenges of the future by launching a new version of our AIY kits," wrote Billy Rutledge, director of AIY projects, in Tuesday's <a href="https://developers.googleblog.com/2018/04/aiy-projects-updated-kits-for-2018.html">announcement.</a></span></p><p><span>The "AIY" kits (short for DIY + AI), will still feature Google's trademark cardboard shells, and <a href="https://www.target.com/p/-/A-53416295">start at $50.</a></span></p><p>With the Voice kit, introduced last year, anyone can build a smart speaker you can talk to, powered by Google Assistant, similar to a Google Home mini. The new Vision kit includes a camera and allows the user to build a device that can recognize faces and over a thousand "common objects," like bananas and screwdrivers.</p><p>Both kits will now include a Raspberry Pi micro-computer, a&#xa0;<span>USB connector cable and pre-provisioned SD card -&#xa0;</span>all parts that were previously sold separately - and will come with "clearer" instructions to make setup easier for first-time builders.</p><p>Google also announced a new app <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.aiy">available in Google Play</a> that will help builders configure their devices, although the kits are still compatible with a monitor, mouse, and keyboard.</p><p>While computer science enthusiasts on <a href="https://twitter.com/search?q=AIY%20Google&amp;src=typd">Twitter</a> have already shown excitement for the new kits, Rutledge suggests the kits are mainly geared toward classrooms and made for young STEM learners.</p><p>"<span>We're seeing continued demand for the kits, especially from the STEM audience where parents and teachers alike have found the products to be great tools for the classroom," said Rutledge. Google's DIY kits for building your own AI gadgets just got a big upgrade

<p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>adafruit.com</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span>Raspberry Pi, the single-board computer that's the size of a credit card, is more widely known for its ability to teach computer science basics rather than for its photography.</p>
<p>But Adafruit, a company selling DIY electronics, saw the potential for Raspberry Pi owners to use the $35 computer in conjunction with a camera to produce pictures.</p>
<p>In its <a href="https://www.adafruit.com/rppa" target="_blank">first annual Raspberry Pi photography contest</a>, which <a href="http://gizmodo.com/you-wont-believe-these-pictures-were-all-captured-using-1614469535">we first saw</a> on Gizmodo, Adafruit asked for Raspberry Pi users' best photos taken with a Pi. The contest had few rules: Anyone with a Pi could enter, and all photos had to be taken with Raspberry Pi and a Raspberry Pi camera or a webcam or a camera connected to the Raspberry Pi. The photos couldn't be altered using Photoshop or other editing software. </p>
