It also wants you to sign up (and pay for) Amazon Prime at $14.99 a month — and possibly a whole host of other Amazon subscriptions.Already, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-has-180-million-members-report-shows-2024-4">75% of US consumers are Prime members</a>, according to data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners. Amazon is still gunning to get the remaining quarter on board.Prime Day is "an opportunity to allow non-Prime members to peer over the shoulder of their friends and family, see those deals, and wonder if they should sign up," said Jeremy Bartlow, a partner and consumer expert at PA Consulting."They use it as a massive volume booster, but also to start getting more and more scale each year with people who haven't jumped on the Prime bandwagon yet," Bartlow said.But that's just the gateway drug.Amazon's deals announced in the lead-up to Prime Day include access for members to three free months of delivery from the company's grocery operations, including Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh, for orders over $35 (the cost a month after the freebies run out is $9.99).Music fans can also get five months free of Amazon Music Unlimited (another $9.99 a month), three months of Kindle Unlimited ($11.99 a month, plus you need a Kindle e-reader, which retails for a minimum of $99.99), or three free months of Audible Premium Plus (plans start at $7.95 a month).Amazon is also offering steep discounts to Prime members on its own electronic devices. One version of its Ring video doorbell is on sale for $50, down from $100, while a 40-inch Fire TV is $170 — roughly one-third off its regular price.The strategy is all about getting customers to try new products in the Amazon world — and hopefully sticking with them by paying additional subscriptions on top of their Prime membership, Bartlow said.For example, "they sell their tablets so cheaply" to get people into Amazon's ecosystem. Plus, "many of them will have ads and a whole user interface that's optimized to push their digital content, which is very different than buying a tablet from another brand," he said. (The Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet is 46% off this Prime Day, down from $139.99 to $74.99.)Meantime, Amazon's Alexa-enabled devices and speakers might lead users to subscribe to Music Unlimited.For Amazon, those kinds of purchases are where the real money is."We sell a lot of devices during our Prime Day events," CFO Brian Olsavsky said on an earnings call after Prime Day 2022. "We don't make money on the device. We make money on the use of the device."Developing a complete offering of devices and services has been the goal of several Big Tech companies for years.Apple has created an ecosystem primarily thanks to its iPhone, for example, though parts of its strategy prompted <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/apple-antitrust-lawsuit-justice-department-2024-3">an antitrust lawsuit</a> from the US Department of Justice earlier this year. Apple has pushed back against the accusations.Google and Microsoft are also vying for you to join their networks. Amazon really wants you to join the family this Prime Day

That's more than the worker has usually been able to claim in the past."I was basically booked up for an entire week, which really doesn't happen," the worker said."It seems they are making sure to get all of the regular stuff out in anticipation" of Prime Day, she added.The Flex worker, who made deliveries for Amazon during Prime Day in 2023, asked not to be identified by name, but Business Insider has verified her identity and work for Amazon.For many Amazon delivery workers, Prime Day has become one of the busiest times of the year. The 2024 version of the event, which will take place on July 16 and 17, promises to be no different: <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/deals/early-amazon-prime-day-deals">Amazon has already spent weeks promoting some discounts</a> and deals. It's promising new deals for shoppers every five minutes during the event itself.This year, Prime Day will also occur the same week as Alabama's tax-free weekend, a three-day period when shoppers can stock up on supplies for the new school year without paying sales tax.Amazon employs a few different kinds of delivery workers. Those who work through the company's Flex program are independent contractors using their own cars and are paid by the block. Making certain types of deliveries, such as grocery orders from Whole Foods, comes with the potential to earn tips.The Flex worker BI spoke with says she's seen more new faces at the Amazon facilities she frequents — a sign, she said, that Amazon is staffing up in advance of the banner shopping week."Prime Day, and then right around October, those are the two biggest times when they hire people because that's when everybody's shopping," the worker told BI, referencing the fall increase in hiring ahead of the holiday shopping season.One challenge for Flex workers is delivering all those packages within the time allotted for the block, the worker said.The worker recalled delivering about 30 packages per three-and-a-half-hour block earlier this year. Lately, though, the worker has noticed that number reaching closer to 40, especially during evening delivery shifts.And if you don't do it, "they'll just say you're unreliable, and you're gone," the worker said.Getting shifts with the best pay also requires a strategy, she said.During a normal week in her area, a three-and-a-half hour block of delivering packages pays $63, the driver told Business Insider. That rate can go above $80 if drivers wait until hours — or even minutes — before a shift, she said.But in the run-up to Prime Day, those higher offers come up sooner — even a full day before the shift, she said.Workers are also competing with the influx of new drivers around the event. Speaking to BI on the Thursday before Prime Day, the Flex driver said she still hadn't seen any blocks for next week, but she's ready to grab whatever shifts she can."Everything just hits bigger and quicker" around the shopping extravaganza, the driver told BI."The Amazon Flex program gives individuals the opportunity to set their own schedule and be their own boss, while earning competitive pay," Amazon spokesperson Branden Baribeau told BI."Amazon Flex delivery partners are able to work when they want – including on and around Prime Day – with the vast majority finishing their delivery blocks early," Baribeau said."When something like a delivery partner repeatedly not showing up for a scheduled block or not following our Terms of Service occurs, our team manually reviews each case to determine if eligibility to deliver with the Amazon Flex program should continue," Baribeau said in response to a question about when Amazon considers deactivating Flex workers.Baribeau said that Flex workers earn $26 per hour on average.Do you work for Amazon Flex, Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh, or another part of Amazon's retail operations and have a story idea to share? In fact, one big selling point of its $139-a-year Prime membership is free one-day shipping to customers' doors.But this year, Prime Day promotions are pointing shoppers toward the option of taking on some of the delivery work themselves by instead collecting packages from its growing network of lockers and other pick-up points.Prime members are "able to choose how and where those items arrive— whether at home, work, or places you frequent with Amazon's network of thousands of package pick-up locations," Amazon said last month as it <a target="_blank" href="https://press.aboutamazon.com/2024/6/amazons-10th-prime-day-event-returns-july-16-17-with-millions-of-exclusive-deals-for-prime-members">touted</a> the massive shopping event, which is scheduled for July 16 and 17.Amazon has been adding pick-up points in recent years. Its locker banks, for instance, are common sites in apartment lobbies, college dorms, convenience stores, and even <a target="_blank" href="https://mpdc.dc.gov/release/mpd-expands-amazon-lockers-program">police stations</a>. There are also staffed Amazon Counters at Whole Foods stores.An Amazon spokesperson said that Amazon offers "tens of thousands of package pick-up locations" in the U.S. The spokesperson also directed Business Insider to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/operations/how-to-use-amazon-locker">a blog post</a> from last year, which says that items ordered for pick-up at lockers must be fulfilled by Amazon and weigh under 10 pounds, among other requirements.And while picking up parcels might seem contrary to Amazon Prime's noted quick-shipping benefits, it's could be useful both for the customer and for the company.If shoppers already go to Amazon's stores or other places with an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/amazon-locker">Amazon locker</a>, it's quite convenient, said Jeremy Bartlow, a partner and consumer expert at PA Consulting."I know it's going to be sitting there in the locker on the way home or at the grocery store, wherever I'm stopping," Bartlow told BI.It's especially convenient to get an order delivered to a locker if you've had <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-hub-work">Amazon packages stolen</a> from your porch or apartment mailroom, or if you're ordering an expensive item and want the extra security.There's another reason why Amazon would love for you to pick up your Prime Day deals instead of delivering them to your front door: their bottom line.Amazon's annual spending on shipping has ballooned over the last few years, particularly as it ramped up its <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-one-day-shipping-promise-snag-2019-7">one-day and same-day shipping</a> operations.Amazon spent $89.5 billion on shipping in 2023 — an increase of roughly 7% over 2022, the company said in its <a target="_blank" href="https://d18rn0p25nwr6d.cloudfront.net/CIK-0001018724/c7c14359-36fa-40c3-b3ca-5bf7f3fa0b96.pdf">annual filing with the SEC.</a>That's despite offering options like "Amazon Day Delivery," where customers can choose to wait a few days if the order isn't urgent, and Amazon will try to put as many items in the same box as it can. (Amazon sometimes offers credits to customers who choose this option.)Delivering orders to a single pick-up point instead of going out on an hours-long route through suburbia saves time — and probably gas — compared with individual delivery.The cost of shipping back items that customers want to return is also steep for Amazon and other retailers — so steep, in fact, that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-walmart-and-target-let-customers-keep-some-returns-2021-1">Amazon may give you a refund and tell you to keep the product.</a>All of that has pushed Amazon to come up with new ways to get you to pick up or drop off stuff instead of relying on the company's delivery workers or third-party services like the U.S. Postal Service.Earlier this year, Amazon offered a <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="c-link" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-fresh-offering-grocery-discounts-to-shoppers-returning-parcels-2024-6">discount at Amazon Fresh grocery stores</a> if patrons used one of the supermarkets to return something they bought on <a target="_blank" href="http://Amazon.com">Amazon.com</a>, for example. Crew appreciation is included in my package, so that's $112 of the $560 I paid for the package accounted for.I'm a light drinker, so I only ordered two alcoholic drinks a day: usually a pre-dinner cocktail ($15 to $20 à la carte) and a glass of wine with dinner ($10).I sometimes got a soda with lunch ($2.50) or a specialty coffee ($3 to $4) at breakfast. That totals $27.50 to $34 a day, or $192.50 to $238 a week for a week of drinks if they were à la carte.For the record, though, the premier package includes 15 alcoholic beverages daily, so you can drink far more than I did and order over $2,000 worth of drinks in a week.I also saved on onboard WiFi, an essential for me because I'm always working and sharing my adventures in real time on <a target="_blank" href="https://www.instagram.com/the_globalglutton/">Instagram</a>.Since I use both a phone and a laptop, I'd need to connect at least two devices. That would typically cost $40 a day, but up to four devices are included with the package. So that's a savings of $280.If you're keeping tabs, I've now accounted for more than the cost of the premier package with just drinks, gratuities, and WiFi.<h2 id="beb73639-b28a-4340-9fec-a6bd6a1e21ba">With our savings already more than accounted for, everything else was a bonus</h2>For instance, I enjoy breaking up the monotony of eating in the main dining room with visits to such <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-was-worth-it-on-my-celebrity-cruise-silhouette-2023-6">specialty restaurants</a> as Sabatini's Italian Trattoria, Crown Grill, or The Catch by Rudi. Cover charges at these eateries range from $35 to $39 per person. I dined at two during my sailing, which would have totaled $74 without the package.Because this was our first family vacation in about a decade, getting family photos was also a priority. So most nights before dinner, we visited the various portrait stations around the ship.With the premier package, I was given an unlimited number of digital images, so we didn't have to make difficult decisions about which photos to keep and which to discard.We ended up with more than a dozen digital photos and six prints. On the other hand, my brother and his girlfriend bought some of their couples-only photos and paid $191.75 for five digital photos.Plus, my fiancé and I indulged in a few premium desserts ($10 each à la carte), I took a fitness class to help balance them out ($30 à la carte), and we made use of the OceanNow service that delivers food or drinks to you anywhere on board ($15 one-time fee).<h2 id="ad58181f-b1ac-4984-92d2-92f0c7209301">Overall, my package basically paid for itself, and then some</h2><div type="image" title="Two ice cream sundaes on a marble counter on a cruise ship" height="1054" width="791" msid="110215365" hostid="261" sizebytes="55262"></div>Overall, I'd estimate we saved at least $275 per person by choosing this package — and we used the included perks rather conservatively since we just aren't big drinkers.But even if you only plan to have two drinks a day like we did, this package basically pays for itself.It's worth noting that you can only order the package before you board or through the second day of your sailing. Both passengers in a stateroom must sign up for it.If one of you doesn't drink alcohol or doesn't care to be connected to WiFi, it probably won't make financial sense to purchase this package.But the best part of having this package was that I never felt nickeled and dimed and was able to just enjoy a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vacation-to-barbados-after-two-year-hiatus-self-care-2023-6">week with my family in the Caribbean</a>.I didn't stress about putting any extras "on my tab" because I knew my final bill would be a fixed cost I'd already made peace with. And by doing so, I certainly came out ahead.

They said Amazon sees the special as another way to amass big audiences, as it has done with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-nfl-thursday-night-football-advertising-strategy-new-brands-2023-9">NFL's "Thursday Night Football"</a> and other sports. The special has the potential to reach more than 200 million viewers, which is Prime Video's monthly reach, according to Amazon's most recent public disclosure.If it goes well, Amazon could repeat the approach with other big news events, one of the people close to the deal talks said. Those events could include the presidential inauguration or State of the Union address, this person predicted."It's a toe in the water for them in that they're trying to get beyond sports to other, seasonal special types of events," this person said. "There's news-adjacent programming they could do."Two of the people close to the deal talks said the election-night special was expected to be ad-free. No final decisions have been made, though. But Amazon and other tech-rooted streamers have seen how live programming, like comedy specials and awards shows, creates appointment viewing that can be highly attractive to advertisers. Advertisers, and especially marketers with time-sensitive product launches, have shown a willingness to pay high prices to reach large live audiences. Amazon this year <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-prime-video-ads-early-success-with-advertisers-2024-4">turned on ads in Prime Video</a>, gunning for the nearly $70 billion in annual TV ad spending.For Amazon, specifically, filmed entertainment and sports programming — part of Prime Video — also serves to keep people subscribing to its lucrative Prime service and get people to shop more on the platform. Prime Video's 2023 Black Friday NFL game, for example, showed QR codes during breaks to promote deals on the site."It fits in with their interest in disruptions and amassing big audiences," the second person close to the deal talks said. "They want to be in the big-event business."<h2 id="7f7a9c20-5ffc-43f3-a0df-b0f758efb495">News has been slow to shift to streaming</h2>Big champions of the election-night special within Amazon include Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, and his powerful No. 2, Albert Cheng, vice president of Prime Video US. Hopkins has played a role in Prime Video's aggressive expansion into sports, which has created tension with some on the entertainment side who <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jay-marine-leading-amazon-sports-ambitions-nba-rights-2024-3">see the sports investment coming at the expense of film and TV budgets</a>.If the deal goes through, the special would be produced by Jonathan Wald, a veteran TV news producer who executive-produced Williams' "11th Hour" on MSNBC and has lately focused on new news formats. He helped Don Lemon launch shows on social media, for example. Williams' reps at talent agency CAA have also been involved.While entertainment and sports have shifted to streaming, news has been slower to follow. Legacy broadcasters like NBC News and ABC News have invested in live-streamed content; CNN has planned a streaming subscription service, but it's had starts and stops.Tech companies with streaming services have generally steered clear of news — not surprisingly, given the high cost of operating a newsroom and how polarizing news can be.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/netflix-ceo-ted-sarandos-ads-sports-originals-change-mind-2024-9">Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos</a>, in a recent interview, rejected the idea of the streamer covering breaking news. Apple TV+ drifted into news-adjacent programming in 2020 with Jon Stewart, who hosted a weekly comedy news show. But Stewart walked away after two seasons, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.theringer.com/2024/6/13/24177435/jon-stewart-talks-apple-split-corporate-constraints-media-regression">saying</a> Apple increasingly wanted more oversight of the show's editorial direction.Amazon, for its part, wants to bring a down-the-middle presentation of election results hosted by Williams with a lineup of exclusive contributors. To lend a nonpartisan feel, the plan is that the presenters won't call the race and will point viewers to third-party content (which could include sites like CNN and NBC News that are available through Amazon Channels).
