It's made entirely of steel so it's durable and easy to clean. Be sure to wash your grinder before you use it for the first time.You will also need some meat. For burgers, you generally want a mix of chuck and sirloin. <a href="https://www.esquire.com/food-drink/food/a7607/bobby-flay-grinding-burgers-052510/">Bobby Flay recommends</a> 85% chuck to 15% sirloin, but if you want a leaner and drier burger, add extra sirloin. If you want to kick the flavor up a notch, add some brisket to the mix. I like to buy whatever cheap roast is available - hopefully something with plenty of fat - and use that for my ground beef concoctions. Feel free to experiment. I've had fun making 75% ground beef/25% ground bacon burgers. For sausage, you generally want a combination of pork and beef or veal. Consider using pork fatback for extra juicy sausages. We'll explore sausage more closely in an upcoming guide.A cutting board is a must for cutting the meat into smaller, more manageable chunks. A good, sharp knife is the ideal device for cutting the meat, and I recommend the 8-inch <a href="https://amzn.to/2MOWTc9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Victorinox Fibrox Pro Chef's Knife</a>. Lastly, you'll want a <a href="https://amzn.to/2t4gJqS" target="_blank" rel="noopener">large mixing bowl</a> to catch the meat as it leaves the grinder.<h2>Get Everything Ready</h2>First, assemble your meat grinder. With the <a href="https://amzn.to/2UFKyK1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KitchenAid Metal Food Grinder Attachment</a>, you insert the grind screw into the main housing, attach the blade to the end of the screw, select and attach the grinding plate, and secure it all with the collar. Then, put the removable tray on top of the housing feed tube. The <a href="https://amzn.to/2UFKyK1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KitchenAid Metal Food Grinder Attachment</a> has three grinding plates: fine (3-millimeter holes), medium (4.5-mm holes), and coarse (8 mm). The coarse plate is best for grinding raw meat for burgers and chili, the medium plate is great for sausage meat, and the fine plate is ideal for cooked meats that you want to spread.A few hours before grinding, consider putting your attachment in the freezer. This is supposed to be helpful from a food safety perspective. It keeps your meat from heating up when coming into contact with the grinder. Harmful bacteria are more likely to grow on raw meat as the temperature rises so the cold is your friend. I store my meat grinder in the freezer so it's always ready to go. A half hour before grinding, put your meat in the freezer. It's unclear whether this helps from a food safety standpoint, but it does help the meat grinder work better. Cold meat is firmer and easier to grind than warmer, mushy meat.Cut the meat into cubes that are slightly smaller than the feed tube. On most devices, this opening is usually about one or two inches. If you're feeling lazy, you can sometimes get away with cutting the meat into long, narrow strips and feeding the strips into the grinder. I haven't noticed an appreciable difference between cubes and strips.<h2>Here's how to grind meat with a KitchenAid</h2><a href="https://amzn.to/2UFKyK1" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">KitchenAid</div></div></div></a>Now that you have all of your elements prepared, attach the grinder to the stand mixer. First, make sure the mixer is turned off and unplugged. Next, depending on the model you have, you will either remove or flip up the attachment hub cover located on the very front of the gear case. Then, insert the shaft of the housing into the attachment hub until the power shaft fits into the square hub socket. Lastly, tighten the hub knob so the grinder is secure. It's a lot easier than it sounds.Now, you can plug the mixer in and turn it on. Speed 4 is the ideal setting for meat grinding. Once you have your mixer set at 4 and a mixing bowl under the attachment where the meat will come out, you can start putting meat into the tray on top and use the food pusher to tamp the meat down into the feed tube.Keep feeding meat into the feed tube until there is no more meat left to grind. Let the grinder run until no more meat is coming out. Then, turn your KitchenAid mixer off and unplug it. Or, if you want more tender meat, put it through the grinder a second time. However, you should not do this if you are using fatty meats.<h2>Don't Forget to Clean Up!</h2>The grinder is much easier to clean if you take care of it immediately after you are done processing your meat. Otherwise, tiny pieces of meat dry onto the attachment, and it'll take some work to remove all of the little flakes. Most of the parts of the Metal Food Grinder Attachment are not dishwasher safe, and even if your grinder is considered dishwasher safe, we recommend washing by hand to increase its longevity.Remove the grinder from the mixer. Then, take the housing apart and remove each of the pieces. Put them in a sink of warm, soapy water. Wash each element with a sponge using a cleaning brush to get any stubborn bits of meat. Once each of the components is clean, dry them thoroughly. I like to put the grinder back together and store it in my freezer, but you are free to store it however you like. Just make sure it stays dry.As with anything you do in the kitchen, have fun with your creations. Once you get the hang of grinding your own meat, you will never buy ground meat again. It's just too easy and tastes so much better to do it yourself. When we were looking for ways to save money, I started making bread from scratch every week. With the ice cream attachment, I could make hard-to-find ice cream flavors. There's a reason the KitchenAid mixer gets comments when people see it sitting on your counter: Home chefs know it's an awesome appliance.KitchenAid recently contacted me to see if I wanted to try out their new <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GK7XKJK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_121718_kitchenaid-meat-grinder-product-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07GK7XKJK&amp;linkId=bae5d0dd31adb80a55ac872793127784" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Metal Meat Grinder Attachment</a>. Here are my experiences with it.<h2>My first experiences with the KitchenAid Meat Grinder Attachment</h2>The KSMMGA, the model number for this product, is not the first meat grinder attachment put out by KitchenAid. The company has a popular "Food Grinder Attachment" (model FGA), which currently sells for about <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004SGFH/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_121718_kitchenaid-meat-grinder-product-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B00004SGFH&amp;linkId=8fdacf5cd75088e85928006f8d144082" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$33 on Amazon</a>. The big differences are that the new model is made entirely of metal, it comes with plates and stuffer tubes, and the food tray is larger.The grinder comes in a convenient hard Styrofoam case where you can fit all of the implements that it come with:<ul><li style="font-weight: 400;">Fine (3 mm), medium (4.5 mm), and coarse (8 mm) grinding plates</li><li style="font-weight: 400;">A sausage stuffer plate</li><li style="font-weight: 400;">Small (9.5 mm) and large (19 mm) sausage stuffer tubes</li><li style="font-weight: 400;">Cleaning brush</li><li style="font-weight: 400;">Food pusher</li></ul>The package includes the main housing, a grind screw, a blade, and a removable food tray.Out of the box, the grinder feels heavy duty and durable. It weighs about two and a half pounds. After doing a little research, I found it's best to put it in the freezer a few hours before you plan to use it for sanitary purposes. This decreases the chance of bacteria growth from an increase in meat temperature. Consequently, instead of storing my grinder in the nice Styrofoam case, I keep it in my freezer. <h2>How the KitchenAid Meat Grinder Attachment performed</h2>I mainly used the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GK7XKJK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_121718_kitchenaid-meat-grinder-product-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07GK7XKJK&amp;linkId=bae5d0dd31adb80a55ac872793127784" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KitchenAid Meat Grinder Attachment</a> to grind large slabs of meat and to create my own twisted concoctions. For example, one of the first dishes I made was a half beef, half bacon burger. I used black Angus top sirloin and pork jowl bacon. The results were delicious but incredibly salty. I'd recommend a 75% beef to 25% bacon ratio. Using the attachment is simple. You choose the grinding plate size you want (I mainly used the coarse plate, which is recommended for burgers and chili meat), and then you insert the grinding screw into the main housing and cap it with the blade and grinding plate. Next, secure them with the collar, and turn the mixer to four and start feeding your meat through the hole in the food tray. You're supposed to cut the meat into one-inch cubes or smaller, but I didn't have any trouble feeding in long one-inch strips. As a hamburger addict, I was impressed with the flavor of the burgers produced by grinding my own beef. I like figuring out ways to make cheap cuts of beef taste great. If it's lean, I put it in the sous vide for a long time. If it's fatty, I grind it up for burgers. And, compared to buying ground beef at the store, my cost-effective, home-ground patties were much more flavorful.<a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GK7XKJK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_121718_kitchenaid-meat-grinder-product-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07GK7XKJK&amp;linkId=bae5d0dd31adb80a55ac872793127784" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">KitchenAid</div></div></div></a>My wife liked that we were able to make fairly lean beer brats, too. We ground up a London broil roast and pork tenderloin, mixed the meat with plenty of seasonings and a can of beer, and let it mellow overnight. The next day, we used the sausage plate and stuffer to make our own "healthy" bratwurst. Overall, the grinder elements are easy to clean if you rinse visible debris off immediately after you are done grinding. Unfortunately, there were a couple times when I was in a hurry and didn't have time to rinse the housing, grinding screw, et al., and it was much harder to get the little bits of ground meat off. The cleaning brush was useful in these instances. The plastic parts - the food pusher and sausage making accessories - are dishwasher safe.<h2>Some concerns about the attachment</h2>My biggest issue with the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07GK7XKJK/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=biip_121718_kitchenaid-meat-grinder-product-review-20&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;creativeASIN=B07GK7XKJK&amp;linkId=bae5d0dd31adb80a55ac872793127784" target="_blank" rel="noopener">KitchenAid Metal Meat Grinder Attachment</a> is that there's usually a one-ounce chunk of meat left over at the end between the blade and the grinding plate. This goes to waste unless you're on the ball enough to freeze the chunks after each grinding job and maybe make a stew sometime down the road. This is only a minor gripe.Making sausage wasn't as simple as I wanted it to be, but I can't really blame the attachment. This was my first time making sausage, and the casings kept breaking. Even with two people working on it, I was frustrated. Regardless, the actual meat was delicious, and I will likely give sausage-making another shake in the near future.Overall, there wasn't much not to love. I suppose a wider feeding mouth would have been nice when stuffing in sausage. With a wider mouth, I also wouldn't have to cut the pieces of meat as small and could have allowed the KitchenAid to do more of the work.<h2>The bottom line</h2>If you own a KitchenAid stand mixer and like to eat ground meat and sausages, this attachment is a must. It's intuitive to use, gives you the freedom to make unique concoctions, and it cleans up easily. Having consolidated their leadership in the wall clocks segment, Ajanta-Orpat Group is now focussed on kitchen appliances, especially, grinders and fans as the next target growth area for the company. Business Insider caught up with the Director of Orpat- Ajanta Group Nevil Patel in an exclusive chat on their journey so far, what sets them apart, and their growth plans going ahead. Ajanta-Orpat’s journey from ₹1 lakh to ₹1200 crore company Nevil Patel is the third generation of his family running this business. Patel told Business Insider that in 1985 their company was the first one to bring quartz technology in India before that they had the mechanical clocks. “From a small assembler of 100 pieces per month, the production of clocks reached up to a level of ₹1.35 crores a year, which is a record in history,” he said <div type="image" title="Nevil Patel" msid="77798069" hostid="261" caption="&amp;lt;p&amp;gt;Nevil Patel Director, Ajanta-ORPAT Group &amp;lt;/p&amp;gt;"></div> His grandfather, Odhavjibhai R Patel began this wall-clock making business with ₹1 lakh rupees. This Gujarat based company, which is also the world’s largest wall clock manufacturer, has grown from an annual turnover of ₹200 crore to over ₹1200 crore now. Today, besides being an exporter in over 45 countries, the Group holds a range of different products— from the calculator, telephone, toys to home appliances, including blender, room heater, fans, iron, grinders, and some more. These are the edited transcripts of the interview. Q) What has changed for the company in this lockdown? As we get classified into semi-essential categories in terms of home appliances and kitchen appliances, we just had to close our factory for 40 days. We were later in the green zone as the government classified it and were the first area to open the factories post-lockdown. The anti-China sentiments of retailers and suppliers helped us pick up really well. But things changed after we started. We had to put a lot of changes in terms of processes. We have a lot of buses that carry all our 5,000 employees. Now that became risky. So initially, we were working at a 30% capacity to adhere to social distancing norms. We introduced temperature checking and sanitising, and gradually we all got to fit into the process of wearing a mask. Q) What is the market share you hold in the clock segment? We hold a 90% market share in the clock segment in India. Largely, in the wall clocks segment. Q) How does your company benefit from the border tensions? The India-China standoff especially has been simmering for a few months now. Since we are totally a Made in India (company), we have everything manufactured in India. So you know there is a huge sentiment at the best level— that is the consumer level, which is obviously going up to the retailer and suppliers that they prefer having the Indian companies. Also, because of the COVID, the imports from China were being delayed, and that’s why the competitive brands, which were importing and selling in India were not able to fulfill the demand. That demand also shifted to us. Q) What percent of your raw material is imported? We do import raw material, and we import it from China. We have been trying for the last ten years to stop importing. But there are certain raw materials that we still do not have an alternative for, which we are in the process of finding. But if ten years back we were importing 40% of the raw material, today we are at 3%. Certain raw materials need time to build up an alternative for. Q) What is the growth percent you are expecting in the coming months? Honestly, we were growing very aggressively in terms of appointing new distributors. But because of the lockdown, a lot of people can’t travel. And, our model is a little different where the distributor needs to come to the factories to understand the process, and how to service the products, etc. So that delay in the process is the reason we might not be in a position to see a growth percentage. It all depends on how the festive season picks up. We are all expecting the coming months to be critical. We also have a lot of business coming from the room heaters category. So that is the season that will come up. However, we lost a fan season when most of the country was under the lockdown. Q) What is the business strategy in the coming months? As I said, we are appointing new distributors. And there were certain territories which we have open. The South was not very strong. There’s a lot of international business that is coming in. We have very good traction for wall clocks in Australia right now. So there’s a lot of international sentiments that are shifting from other countries to India as a manufacturing hub. <div type="image" title="Ajanta-ORPAT Factory Inside" msid="77798080" hostid="261"></div> Q) How many distributors do you have in India? Currently, we have 450 distributors in India. We estimated it to be near 800 by the end of 2022. We have a very strong pipeline, and we have been growing at a much faster rate at the distributor level than we expected. And, we don’t see a problem in reaching that target. Q) Do you have any plans to go public anytime in the future? No, not at the moment. Q) What has been your business focus in the last few years? Ahh, focus, Home appliances, Kitchen appliances, and fans have been our focus other than wall clocks. Again in fans, we are launching a certain technology by the end of this year. We are also launching different technology in a mixer grinder that we plan to launch in November. In terms of fans, we are launching BLDC technology (Brushless DC motors), which is more of a power-saving fan— It will save around 85% of the power. In a mixer grinder, we are launching a very premium product, which can do multiple things. So there are these mixer grinders from international brands in the range of ₹ 40000 to 50000, which can make smoothies, atta’s and soups and all kinds of stuff. We have been working on this for almost two years now. Ours will be completely Made in India and will also be at a much much affordable price. Q) Do you see your market share increasing in the clock segment in the coming months? The wall clock is a difficult sector for a new player to enter. To manufacture a wall clock for a single wall clock, you would need over 200 products and processes. For us, everything for glass cutting to the coil making, everything is done in the house that is the reason we are able to sell it at a reasonable price. There’s a lot of acceptability around the market for our clocks. We will 100% be able to maintain our position as a world leader in clocks. <ul><li>Amazon’s Great Indian Festival is the longest this year as the brand hasn't set an end date yet and the sale is likely to go on for a month. </li><li>This year’s sale has already broken some of the records set last year. </li><li>Manish Tiwary, Vice President, Amazon India shares with us some of the trends that the e-commerce giant has seen so far, how the platform is working towards improving overall consumer experience, marketing strategy and much more. </li></ul>Consumer sentiment seems to have picked up during Navratri after seeing a muted affair during Raksha Bandhan and Ganesh Chaturthi. E-commerce firms Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, and Snapdeal together sold goods worth $3.1 billion in the first 4.5 days of the first festival season sale, revealed management consultancy Redseer. This growth trajectory of e-commerce platforms in India testifies how customers are increasingly recognising the importance of comfort shopping within closed doors, and after seeing their businesses take a plunge in the first three months of the lockdown, more and more sellers are coming online with the increasing adoption of e-commerce platforms. Similarly, Amazon India has also been seeing a year of firsts in its ongoing Great Indian Festival and is breaking last year’s records already. So far, the platform has recorded the highest number of first time shoppers, saw a 50% increase in new sellers and witnessed the strongest-ever start for SMBs. 91% of its first-time shoppers were from smaller cities who browsed the app in local Indian languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Total iPhones sold on Amazon in one day were more than the total iPhones sold in the entire festive sale period of last year. The sale has also helped Amazon accelerate growth across its portfolio. Over 1 lakh customers bought Amazon devices, Echo and Fire TV devices. Kindle sales were around 2.5X higher than the first day of the sale last year. Manish Tiwary, Vice President, Amazon India calls this year’s Great Indian Festival ‘Bharat’s biggest celebration on Amazon ever’ as Tier II and III towns take the forefront. He further told us some of the trends that the e-commerce giant has seen so far, how the platform is working towards improving overall consumer experience, challenges of breaking the clutter in the e-commerce landscape, marketing strategy, and most demanded products on the platform. Excerpts: Q. The role of engagement and communication has never been more important, especially in today’s digital-first world. How are you making sure your communication during this year's Great Indian Festival is relevant to consumers? These are unprecedented times and COVID-19 has impacted the sense of normalcy for everyone. This Great Indian Festival, our focus remains on providing reliability to customers, ensuring safety of employees and helping sellers as they get back on their feet. These include more than 6,50,000 sellers &amp; SMBs including artisans, women entrepreneurs, emerging Indian brands and local store owners from programs like Karigar, Saheli, Launchpad and Local Shops. At the same time, we want to help customers find everything they need – from the latest mobile phone to groceries and get them delivered safely to their homes. Our campaign with the ‘Khushiyon Ka Darwaza’ symbolizes the joy Amazon’s Great Indian Festival brings in the lives of this entire ecosystem of customers, sellers, delivery associates, brand partners and more. Q. What are some of the exclusive deals you have on the platform to woo consumers? This festive season, lakhs of Small &amp; Medium Businesses (SMBs) are offering unique selection to customers helping them rebuild and accelerate their business in tough times. Over 4 crore products from Small &amp; Medium Businesses (SMBs); products from over 20,000 local shops across 100 cities will be available during the Great Indian Festival. Customers across the country will have the opportunity to shop for unique products from thousands of Amazon sellers under various programs such as Local Shops, Amazon Launchpad, Amazon Saheli, and Amazon Karigar and enjoy deals/offers extended by lakhs of small businesses. This year witnessed the strongest ever start for SMBs with record sales; over 5,000 sellers clock sales worth INR 1MM (10 lakh) in SMB pre-festive lead up &amp; first 48 hours of the Great Indian Festival. With over 1.1 Lakh sellers receiving orders, we are humbled how sellers, brands and ecosystem partners nationwide have come together during these unprecedented times to spread joy across the country. Q. What are some of the other trends you are expecting to see this festive? At this moment in time, our focus is to ensure our customers get all that they need safely and that we are able to strongly help our small business partners with their business revival to manage through these challenging times. Customers recognize that ecommerce is the safest way for them to get what they need, and sellers know that e-commerce is the best way for them to serve their customers as their footfalls have been impacted. We are seeing a 50% increase in new seller registrations vs pre COVID19. The sellers on Amazon.in have been receiving orders for consumer electronics, study from home essentials, kitchen &amp; home appliances, smart devices, laptops, mobile phones, phone accessories, personal grooming products, apparel and more besides groceries and other essential products. Q. With the on-going festive season, many other platforms will have their Sales days too. How do you then cut the clutter and make sure you win consumers? How will you be different from the other players in the segment? As a customer-obsessed company, we remain focused on ways to serve the customers in the country everywhere and fulfil all their needs. Our focus remains on what is best for our sellers &amp; customers. This Great Indian Festival is all about them. Q. How are you working towards improving the overall consumer experience? Tier II &amp; III towns see a significant number of customers shop on Amazon.in, with many being first time customers. To address customer needs and enable millions of customers from India to discover the joy, convenience and benefits of online shopping, ahead of the festive season, they can shop in one of the six languages of their choice including English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. In fact, the largest number of new customers shopped for the first time on Amazon.in; 91% of new customers came from smaller cities as customers experienced the Great Indian Festival in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Q. Do you anticipate people to buy more, considering a lot of people might have pushed buying things for the festive season? With over 1.1 Lakh sellers receiving orders, 66% sellers, 91% of new customers, and 66% of new Prime sign-ups from small towns; shopping in 5 Indian languages; and orders from over 98.4% of India’s pin-codes in just 48 hours, this Great Indian Festival is truly Bharat’s biggest celebration on Amazon ever. During the first 48 hours, top sold categories were Smartphones, Large Appliances and Consumer Electronics with leading brands OnePlus, Samsung, Apple and Xiaomi making record sales.
