In its master circular dated 12th June, 2024, the insurance watchdog laid out a slew of customer-friendly directives for life insurance companies to follow with immediate effect. Read on to know all about how these new rules will impact you : <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Customer information sheet" comment="subhead" text="Customer information sheet"><keyword id="22033784" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="customer-information-sheet" source="keywords">Customer information sheet</keyword></cmsannotation> Going ahead, all life insurance companies will have to mandatorily provide their policyholders with a CIS, or Customer Information Sheet. This will serve to explain to them the basic features of the policy in very simple terms, and will include essential details like sum assured, benefits, policy loan options, free-look period and procedures for making claims and redressing grievances. In addition, benefits payable to the policyholder if they survive the policy tenure (maturity benefits), upon death and surrender of policy should also be clearly spelt out. Along with this, the policyholders are also entitled to a customised illustration of how the policy will benefit them while they are being sold the policy. CIS should also be made available to the policyholder in their local language on request. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Free-look and grace period" comment="subhead" text="Free-look and grace period"><keyword id="22053620" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Free-look-and-Grace-Period" source="Orion">Free-look and grace period</keyword></cmsannotation> Policyholders will now have a 30-day window from the day they receive the policy document to review and cancel the policy if they want. If the policy is cancelled within this period, they will be entitled to a full premium refund. Earlier, this period only lasted for 15 days. For grace period, which basically refers to the additional, penalty-free window given to the policyholder to make premium payment post due date to avoid losing coverage, the windows will differ depending on premium payment frequency. If you pay the policy premiums on a monthly basis, you will get a 15-day grace period. For premium payments made on a quarterly/half-yearly or annual basis, the grace period will be of 30 days. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word" comment="subhead" text="Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word">Penalty on violating Ombudsman’s word</cmsannotation> The insurer is bound to comply with the <keyword id="960887" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Insurance-Ombudsman" source="Orion">Insurance Ombudsman</keyword>’s award within 30 days of receiving the same. In case the same is violated, the insurer will have to pay a penalty of Rs 5,000 per day to the complainant. <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Higher value on early policy surrender" comment="subhead" text="Higher value on early policy surrender">Higher value on early policy surrender</cmsannotation> Often, policyholders ended up with a low, negligible amount as refund upon surrendering their insurance policy. This is set to change with <keyword id="21879234" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IRDA" source="keywords">IRDA</keyword>’s latest directives. Now, policyholders will be eligible for <keyword id="885219" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="surrender-value" source="Orion">surrender value</keyword> even if they decide to surrender their policy after just one year. Previously, only 50% of <keyword id="2939473" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="policy-premium" source="Orion">policy premium</keyword> would be refunded, provided the policyholders surrendered their policy between years 4-7 of the policy tenure. Moreover, they would lose the entire premium amount if they surrendered their policy within a year. Customers will also be entitled to higher special surrender value (SSV) from now on. This SSV should be at least equivalent to the expected present one of the these three: <ol><li>Paid up sum assured, or present value of your sum assured after you stop paying premiums</li><li>Paid up future benefits</li><li>Accrued benefits</li></ol>Also, it will be compulsory for life insurers to offer loans to policyholders as per the eligible surrender value of the policy. Says Vivek Jain, Head, Investments, Policybazaar.com, "The provision for higher Surrender Value (SV), calculated at a prevailing 10-year government securities rate with a limited spread, significantly increases the value returned to policyholders in the event of a policy surrender, after the completion of first year. The mandatory facility of policy loans across all life insurance savings products and the allowance of partial withdrawals under pension products will provide vital financial flexibility, which will enable policyholders to meet liquidity needs and specific financial goals. These measures will certainly enhance trust and transparency in the industry." <cmsannotation type="cmsannotation" annotationid="Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products" comment="subhead" text="Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products">Partial withdrawal allowed from pension products</cmsannotation> Policyholders will be allowed to make partial withdrawals, provided they have 3 years of continuous coverage under their insurance-cum-pension plan. Also, these withdrawals cannot be more than 25% of the total premiums paid till date. The insurer cannot use this withdrawal towards making any adjustments in the policy's sum assured. However, this withdrawal will only be allowed for specific situations, like funding children’s higher education/marriage, constructing a house, treating critical illnesses, starting a new venture or for skill development purposes.

It was incredibly informal and had hardly any official policies in it.I was told my job would be to help open Tesla's first official dealership in Indiana and build its title and registration processes, among other new policies, from scratch. By the end of 2018, customer demand was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-biggest-moments-2018-2018-12#tesla-makes-5000-model-3s-in-one-week-for-the-first-time-26">growing rapidly,</a> and I felt like the message from management was to burn the midnight oil and work even harder to keep up, so I did.<h2 id="96772d0d-02fd-4649-a729-2576760cfa5e">I never cried as much as I did during Q4</h2>The fourth quarter was always the worst and most chaotic time of year. We were supposed to be with our families but couldn't be, so we built a family among each other. Indian insurance companies have concentrated investments in the BFSI, IT, and consumer sectors - all of which have been underperformers in the recent past. The life insurer had posted a net profit of Rs 777 crore in the year-ago quarter. <keyword id="20840570" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="total-income" source="keywords">Total income</keyword> during January-March FY24 rose to Rs 37,567 crore from Rs 22,805 crore in the same period of FY23, <keyword id="19906098" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sbi-life" source="keywords">SBI Life</keyword> said in a regulatory filing. Net premium income in Q4FY24 stood at Rs 25,116 crore as against Rs 19,897 crore in the year-ago period. For the full year 2023-24, the company's net profit grew 10 per cent to Rs 1,890 crore from Rs 1,720 crore in the previous year. Total income during the year rose to Rs 1,32,631 crore from Rs 81,598 crore a year ago. SBI Life said it registered a growth of 9 per cent in the value of new business (VoNB) to Rs 5,550 crore in FY24. VoNB is the present value of expected future earnings from new policies written during a specified period. It reflects the additional value expected to be generated through the writing of new policies during a specified period. Assets under management (AUM) grew 27 per cent to Rs 3.8 lakh crore as of March 31, 2024, it said. Solvency ratio declined to 196 per cent from 215 per cent in the previous fiscal. Solvency margin represents the additional capital that an insurer must maintain to cover potential claims beyond their expected liabilities. But one way leaders can minimize the impact of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-companies-can-respond-to-cybersecurity-risks-after-layoffs-2024-9">losses from a cybersecurity incident</a> is by getting cyber insurance."All companies can benefit from having cyber insurance," said Shruti Engstrom, the senior vice president of errors and omissions/cyber at the risk-mitigation company Aon. "This is a risk that's here to stay."Cyber insurance helps organizations recover the costs of a cybersecurity incident, the global average of which IBM estimates is about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ibm.com/reports/data-breach">$4.9 million</a>. Engstrom told Business Insider that these expenses might include shutting down production lines, computer systems, or other operations, as well as the fallout of customer information being released."If something bad happens — there's a data breach or ransomware attack — and it costs you a lot of money, you have coverage to help with that," <a target="_blank" href="https://fletcher.tufts.edu/people/faculty/josephine-wolff">Josephine Wolff</a>, an associate professor of cybersecurity policy at Tufts University, said.The cyber-insurance <a target="_blank" href="https://content.naic.org/sites/default/files/inline-files/Final%202023%20Cyber%20Report.pdf">market is growing</a>, Wolff said, but many companies still lack coverage. Here's what business leaders should know about cyber insurance.<h2 id="e78eaf2c-45e6-4e54-9e2e-14bdcdc2b1ad">The benefits of cyber insurance</h2>Cyber insurance can minimize the financial blow of a cyberattack, but it's not just about the money, said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bitsight.com/about/our-team/stephen-boyer">Stephen Boyer</a>, a cofounder and the chief innovation officer at Bitsight, a cyber-risk-management company. Insurance also gives companies access to incident-response expertise, such as cybersecurity tools, legal assistance, and ransomware negotiation."If a company experiences a cybersecurity incident and has insurance, it can tap into a world of expertise that it may not otherwise know existed," Engstrom said.Cyber insurance is available as a stand-alone policy or incorporated into other business coverage. When a company purchases the insurance, it undergoes an application and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.usatoday.com/money/blueprint/insurance/what-is-insurance-underwriting/">underwriting process</a>, which helps leaders assess the health of their cybersecurity measures and ability to protect their firm from bad actors, Engstrom said.A better understanding of a company's risk is an important benefit of cyber insurance, Boyer said. But not enough companies, especially smaller ones, are getting the insurance, he added.One reason is the cost: The <a target="_blank" href="https://cyberreadinessinstitute.org/resources/cyber-insurance-faqs-for-small-and-medium-business/">Cyber Readiness Institute</a> estimates that cyber insurance can cost businesses $500 to $5,000 a year. But cyberattacks can be much more costly to an organization's bottom line and its reputation, Boyer said.<h2 id="c6454cb6-2ed4-4a3e-8923-2f759517c2ba">What cyber insurance does and doesn't cover</h2>Many policies offer first- and third-party coverage, and most companies need both, Engstrom said.While all policies are different, first-party insurance typically covers losses incurred because of a cyberattack. According to the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/small-businesses/cybersecurity/cyber-insurance">Federal Trade Commission</a>, it can also cover costs such as legal counsel, forensic-investigation services, recovery of stolen data, communication with customers, fees and penalties to regulatory bodies, crisis management, public relations, and lost income.Some policies also cover ransomware negotiation and payments to hackers. However, Wolff said this is a controversial aspect of cyber insurance, as many believe it incentivizes criminals to continue launching attacks.Engstrom said third-party insurance covers legal fees and settlement costs when a customer, a vendor, or another third party seeks legal damages as a result of a cybersecurity incident."Companies that are at risk of a cybersecurity incident are almost always at risk of a related third-party conflict," she added.Boyer told BI that cyber insurance usually doesn't cover losses related to intellectual property or preexisting cybersecurity incidents. Acts of war or attacks related to terrorism, which typically affect high-level companies and organizations, are also not covered, Wolff said.Additionally, according to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ibm.com/topics/cyber-insurance">IBM</a>, attacks caused by network failures, negligent or malicious employees, or social engineering, such as phishing scams, might not be covered.Engstrom said the policies also typically don't cover the cost of hiring more security or IT staff or upgrading cybersecurity systems to prevent attacks."Many don't realize that these long-term structural and preventative improvements are not covered under most cybersecurity-insurance policies," she added.<h2 id="3ec2bff8-ffa8-4c28-9e6a-8cdb3b73a14a">What to look for in a cyber-insurance policy</h2>Policies differ depending on the insurer, Wolff said, and companies can sometimes negotiate their coverage. So it's crucial to ask a lot of questions before signing on."One really important thing to go through with your carrier is the specific exclusions in your policy," she added. "The more you can get into the specifics of that, the less likely you are to be taken by surprise when you're trying to file a claim."Basically, make sure the policy adequately covers your level of risk, Engstrom said.Wolff suggested discussing how pricing is determined and which cybersecurity measures insurers require companies to have — some might offer lower pricing for companies with upgraded cybersecurity infrastructure.Some insurance companies also offer training or support to educate an organization's staff on cybersecurity best practices, Engstrom added.She said to also find out about the claims process: "If a company experiences a cybersecurity incident, they must understand how their insurer steps in and what kind of support is provided. Leaders need to know that their insurance company is there for them every step of the way."Ultimately, companies should understand their cyber risks and know what protection they need when purchasing insurance, Boyer said."What are you trying to protect, and what's the risk transfer?" he said. "It obviously depends on your business — some businesses are just more exposed to this sort of risk and could really have some sort of payout."

Companies without cyber insurance could be making a costly mistake

It's also one of the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://statistique.quebec.ca/en/communique/croissance-demographique-record-moitie-regions-quebec">fastest-growing cities in Canada</a>, so why wouldn't you want to get in on the action?I've lived here with my family for over 50 years and relish ambling through the different boroughs, each with its distinctive history, charm, architecture, and culinary delights.But that notion of a magical, miracle city "everyone should move to" is a mirage — no matter how many "best places to live" listicles we end up on.<h2 id="08425bc8-f0c0-4ec4-9085-983f7d2cea97">Finding housing in the Canadian city can be incredibly difficult</h2>Although we're known for our quaint cobblestone streets, Montreal is far from a fairy tale for some renters.Montreal native Lisette Jemmott knows too well how difficult navigating the market can be. At 26, she returned to the city after living in Toronto for 10 years, longing for the high quality of life and phenomenal food scene she remembered from her youth.At 39, Jemmott is looking to upgrade after living in a basic two-bedroom apartment without included amenities and utilities.Even though she has a steady job in event planning and marketing that pays market value, all the new apartment listings she found were too expensive for her budget of 1,500 CAD, or about $1,112 a month. Worse yet, rental prices seemed to jump by at least 50 CAD every time she searched.<div type="image" title="pool in a modern luxury apartment building in montreal" height="1344" width="1792" msid="113029358" hostid="261" sizebytes="160644"></div>Thanks to provincial protections that limit and regulate rent increases for existing leases, Jemmott's monthly payment has only gone from 900 to 1,100 CAD over the last eight years.But similar units in her building now cost 1,500 to 1,700 CAD a month, and things only seem to worsen for new renters. According to <a target="_blank" href="https://rclalq.qc.ca/publications/demenager-un-cauchemar-pour-les-locataires/">The Coalition of Housing Committees and Tenants Associations of Quebec</a>, Montreal rental prices have increased by an average of 27% between 2020 and 2024.Even after Jemmott decided she was willing to downsize from a two-bedroom to a one-bedroom apartment to live in a building with more amenities, her search ended in vain. For now, she's staying put.Michael Falduto, a ReMax real-estate broker who serves Montreal and its surrounding suburbs, isn't surprised by Jemmott's experience.He said that before the pandemic, renters could secure a "luxury condo in a big complex with a pool and all kinds of amenities" for 1,500 CAD a month. Now, renters are getting "a standard two-bedroom" for the same cost.The broker added that when one of those "unicorn" affordable luxury apartments comes on the market in Montreal, he's inundated with 10 to 15 tour requests almost instantly.<div type="image" title="a row of colorful apartments in montreal" height="1336" width="1781" msid="113029356" hostid="261" sizebytes="335360"></div>Now, Jemmott is keeping her fingers crossed that home prices fall next year, so she might have the opportunity to buy. But Falduto noted a troubling new trend for first-time homebuyers: Starter homes in Montreal <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nesto.ca/mortgage-basics/quebec-housing-market-outlook/">cost at least 40% more</a> than they did in 2020.Even if buyers qualify for a mortgage, the broker said it's often not enough for them to close a deal.Consequently, people who would otherwise buy stay in rental properties longer, leaving fewer units available for the next wave of renters.My husband and I rented in the city for over a decade before we bought our starter home in the late 1990s. But back then, it was a buyers' market.Given the condition of Montreal's housing market, our "starter" is now just our forever home. It's made more sense for us to renovate instead of trying to find something bigger.<h2 id="17085ce8-6c63-4621-b3f8-c4959fb6b9a2">Rising rent prices aren't the only thing making it harder for young professionals to stick around</h2>In a city of 1.8 million, there are <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.mtl.org/en/experience/top-student-city">nearly 200,000 students</a> — about 11% of the population — largely because of top-notch schools like McGill, Concordia, and Université de Montréal.However, local business developer Glenn Castanheira said Montreal can be a bit of a fly trap for bright-eyed professionals."We have the perfect ingredients to attract that talent because of quality of life and higher education," he told BI.But 20% of those aforementioned students are international, and the lack of affordable rentals makes it more difficult for them to stick around after school. What should be a vast, diverse talent pool becomes more of a puddle.Those who do stick around require higher starting salaries to cover their rent, which only drives up business costs.<div type="image" title="concordia university in montreal" height="1332" width="1776" msid="113029371" hostid="261" sizebytes="275472"></div>To make matters worse, if young professionals don't speak French, there isn't a lot of incentive for them to stay and strengthen the Quebec market.New <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebecs-new-french-language-rules-1.7247020#:~:text=The%20Quebec%20government%20will%20go,in%20French%20by%20June%202025.">language signage laws</a> in Quebec, which will come into effect in June 2025, state that businesses must give French at least twice as much space on their storefronts as any other language.<div type="image" title="french signs on a storefront in montreal" height="1340" width="1787" msid="113029369" hostid="261" sizebytes="80734"></div>Erkan Yönder, an associate professor of real estate and finance at Concordia University, told BI that he's seen new graduates get driven away by this pressure to be bilingual.As a Montreal native, I grew up in a home where four languages (sometimes more) could be heard throughout the day. I thought this was the norm for everyone. The city's language rules may send the wrong message to foreign students who want to make Montreal their home but aren't native French speakers."Learning a new language shouldn't be a threat or a burden," Yönder said. After all, at 382 years old, Montreal requires a lot of upkeep.According to the <a target="_blank" href="https://montreal.ca/en/articles/why-does-montreal-carry-out-so-many-construction-projects-each-year-15663">City of Montreal website</a>, more than <a target="_blank" href="https://montreal.ca/en/articles/why-does-montreal-carry-out-so-many-construction-projects-each-year-15663">500 construction projects</a> are carried out within the territory annually, which is why locals quip that Montreal has two seasons: winter and construction."It's not even a joke when I say even if the city opens up a 6-inch hole in the pavement, something like 12 cones appear all around it," Castanheira told BI.Although it's been a big year for new housing construction in Montreal — up <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca/media-newsroom/news-releases/2024/housing-starts-june-2024">226% since June 2023</a> — which we surely need, most of these seemingly never-ending projects are infrastructure repairs.<div type="image" title="construction in downtown montreal" height="2250" width="3000" msid="113029365" hostid="261" sizebytes="1148238"></div>Roads are ripped up or blocked, parking spots are reduced, and in some cases, slabs of plywood are placed over ripped-up sidewalks and roads at the entrances to buildings.The dust alone can be enough to discourage customers from weaving through the metal construction fences to find a store.I'm not mad that the city is trying to make these improvements, but it can get a bit exhausting when the projects are stacked one after the next. Before people rush to Montreal to live their best life, they should know my city's beautiful veneer is starting to crack

It was already a hectic day when my <keyword id="19996817" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="insurance" source="keywords">insurance</keyword> broker left a frantic voicemail telling me that my homeowner's insurance had lapsed. I felt nauseous and naked. Suddenly, any leak, fire, or tree branch falling onto the hundred-year-old Hudson Valley house that's been in my family for nearly 40 years could <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stock-market-meltdown-rebound-fed-japan-interest-rate-decision-emergency-2024-8">wipe out</a> my bank account. I spiraled in shame. How did I let this happen? Did I forget to update a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/credit-card-rewards-points-friends-fights-brunch-money-payment-venmo-2024-7">credit card</a>? Did I miss a bill? Did I do something wrong with the policy? But when I checked my records, even the <keyword id="20508386" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Travelers" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="Travelers" meta.hostid="261" meta.entityid="Travelers">Travelers</keyword> website, there was nothing. A few hours later, my panic turned to bewilderment. When I finally reached my insurance broker, he told me the reason Travelers revoked my policy: AI-powered aerial <keyword id="19942081" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="surveillance" source="keywords">surveillance</keyword>. My finances were imperiled, it seemed, by a bad piece of code. I take privacy and surveillance extremely seriously — so seriously that I started one of the leading <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.stopspying.org/">think tanks</a> on the topic, the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project. But while I study <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-walmart-warehouse-surveillance-employees-oxfam-report-2024-4">surveillance</a> threats around the country for a living, I had no idea that my own insurance company was using my premium dollars to spy on me. Travelers not only uses <a target="_blank" href="https://www.travelers.com/about-travelers/technology-analytics/data-driven-and-powered-by-ai">aerial photography and AI</a> to monitor its customers' roofs, but also <a target="_blank" href="https://ppubs.uspto.gov/dirsearch-public/print/downloadPdf/20240005470">wrote patents on the technology</a> — nearly 50 patents actually. And it may not be the only insurer spying from the skies. This didn't just feel creepy and invasive — it felt wrong. Literally wrong: There was nothing wrong with my <keyword id="20715650" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="roof" source="keywords">roof</keyword>. I'm a lazy homeowner. I hate gardening, and I don't clean as often as I should. But I still take care of the essentials. Whether it's upgrading the electrical or installing a new HVAC, I try to make sure my home is safe. But to Travelers' <keyword id="19899640" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="AI" source="keywords">AI</keyword>, it appeared, my laziness was too big a risk to insure. Its algorithm didn't detect an issue with the foundation or a concern with a leaky pipe. Instead, as my broker revealed, the ominous threat that canceled my insurance was nothing more than moss. Where there's moisture, there's moss, and if you leave a huge amount of it on a roof for a protracted period, it can undermine the roof's lifespan. A small amount is largely harmless. Still, treating it couldn't be simpler. Sure, I could have knocked out the moss sooner, but life was busy, and so it kept falling (and growing) between the cracks. Finally, in June, weeks before I knew my roof was being surveilled, I went to the hardware store, spent 80 bucks on moss killer, hooked the white bottle of chemicals up to the garden hose, and sprayed it on the roof. The whole thing took about five minutes. A few days later, much to my relief, the moss was dying. I thought it was the end of an entirely unmemorable story. Who knows. Maybe if I'd done that a month sooner, Travelers' technology never would have flagged me, never would've said I was an insurance risk. But one of the deep frustrations of the AI-surveillance age is that as companies and governments track ever more of our lives in ever more detail, we rarely know we're being watched. At least not until it's too late to change their minds. While there's no way to know exactly how many other Travelers customers have been targeted by the company's surveillance program, I'm certainly not the first. In February, Boston's ABC affiliate reported on a customer who was threatened with nonrenewal if she didn't replace her roof. The roof was well within its life expectancy, and the customer hadn't encountered any issues with leaks; still, she was told that without a roof replacement she wouldn't be insured. She said she faced a $30,000 bill to replace a slate roof that experts estimated could have lasted another 70 years. Insurers have every incentive to be overly cautious in how they build their AI models. No one can use AI to know the future; you're training the technology to make guesses based on changes in roof color and grainy aerial images. But even the best AI models will get a lot of predictions wrong, especially at scale and particularly where you're trying to make guesses about the future of radically different roof designs across countless buildings in various environments. For the insurance companies designing the algorithms, that means a lot of questions about when to put a thumb on the scale in favor of, or against, the homeowner. And insurance companies will have huge incentives to choose against the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-are-new-homes-ugly-construction-builders-design-materials-architecture-2024-7">homeowner</a> every time. Think about it: Every time the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ai-quietly-picking-your-pocket-with-personalized-pricing-2024-7">AI gives the green light</a> to a roof that actually has something wrong, the insurance company picks up the bill. Each time that happens, the company can add that data point to its model and train it to be even more risk-averse. But when homeowners are threatened with cancellation, they pick up the bill for repairs, even if repairs are unnecessary. If the Boston homeowner throws out a slate roof with 70 years of life left in it, the insurance company never knows it was wrong to remove it. It never updates the model to be less aggressive for similar homes. Over time, insurance companies will have every incentive to make the models more and more unforgiving, threatening more Americans with loss of coverage and potentially driving millions or billions of dollars' worth of unnecessary home repairs. And as insurers face increasing losses due to the climate crisis and inflation, the pressure to push unnecessary preventive repairs on customers will only rise. A confusing coda to this whole ordeal was what Travelers said when I reached out with a detailed list of fact-checking questions and a request for an interview. In response, a spokesperson sent a terse denial: "Artificial intelligence analysis/modeling and drone surveillance are not a part of our underwriting decision process. When available, our underwriters may reference high-resolution aerial imagery as part of a holistic review of property conditions." How did this make sense given what was written on Travelers' own website and patent applications? Then the precision and slipperiness of the language started to stand out. What exactly counts as the "underwriting decision process"? When Travelers boasts online that its workers "rely on algorithms and aerial imagery to identify a roof's shape — typically a time-consuming process for customers — with close to 90% accuracy," does that classification not count as the underwriting process? And even though Travelers has flown <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aloft.ai/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Travelers-case-study-updated-5.14.21.pdf">tens of thousands of drone flights</a>, are those not part of underwriting? And if AI and drones aren't actually affecting customers, why file so many patent applications like "<a target="_blank" href="https://ppubs.uspto.gov/dirsearch-public/print/downloadPdf/20240005470">Systems and Methods for Artificial Intelligence (AI) Roof Deterioration Analysis</a>"? It felt like the company was trying to have it both ways, boasting about using the latest and greatest tech while avoiding accountability for errors. When I brought these follow-up questions to the company, Travelers did not respond. Thankfully, my own roof isn't going anywhere, at least not for now. A few hours after my panicked ordeal with Travelers began and I started to scramble to find new coverage, the situation resolved. Travelers admitted that it screwed up. It never conceded that its AI was wrong to tag me. But it revealed the reason I couldn't find my cancellation notice: The company never sent it. Travelers may have invested huge sums in neural networks and drones, but it apparently never updated its billing software to reliably handle the basics. Without a nonrenewal notice, it couldn't legally cancel coverage. Bad cutting edge tech screwed me over; bad basic software bailed me out. Part of what is so disturbing about the whole episode is how opaque it was. When Travelers took aerial footage of my house, I never knew. When it decided I was too much of a risk, I had no way of knowing why or how. As more and more companies use more and more opaque forms of AI to decide the course of our lives, we're all at risk. AI may give companies a quick way to save some money, but when these systems use our data to make decisions about our lives, we're the ones who bear the risk. Maddening as dealing with a human insurance agent is, it's clear that AI and surveillance are not the right replacements. And unless lawmakers take action, the situation will only get worse. The reason I still have insurance is simple consumer-protection laws. New York state won't allow Travelers to revoke my insurance without notice. But why do we let companies like Travelers use AI on us in the first place without any protections?
