With only one month to go, the deal-making activity is unlikely to reach 2022 levels for the full year, let alone surpass it, as per <keyword id="131240" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="grant-thornton" source="Orion">Grant Thornton</keyword>. The calendar year so far has seen 1,321 deals amounting to $45.9 billion. That’s 62% lower in value, and 29% lower in volume as compared to the same period last year. “The prevailing economic factors, including rising inflation, soaring gold prices, and escalating interest rates, suggest a challenging environment. The strength of the dollar and more stringent global financial conditions pose additional threats affecting capital flows and investor risk sentiments,” says Shanthi Vijetha, partner at Grant Thornton Bharat. November makes its mark with big deals In November 2023, 132 deals were sealed, amounting to $6.5 billion. This is the second best month of the year, after August. Thanks to big ticket deals, November’s deal value went up 143% on a month-on-month basis, even as volumes fell 21% from October. “This month set a record for the highest mergers and acquisition values in 2023, reaching a remarkable four-billion-dollar mark in a single month,” said Vijetha. The biggest deal of the month is Siemens AG increasing its stake in Siemens to 69% for $2.28 billion. This transaction alone was responsible for 35% of the month’s overall values. The other top deals include transactions in the financial sector – like AU Small Finance Bank’s acquisition of Fincare Small Finance Bank for $529 million. Zurich Insurance also acquired a controlling stake in Kotak General Insurance for $494 million. The inbound space drove the values with a 63% contribution while continuing the trend. Domestic deals dominated in terms of deal volumes with a 78% contribution. While there was a 28% decline in PE volumes compared to October 2023, the values stood unchanged – indicating that big deals are back. The average deal size for November 2023 reached $26 million, marking an increase compared to the preceding months. Three of the top five PE deals were above $200 million – including Blackstone acquiring a stake in Quality Care, undisclosed investors buying a stake in PhamEasy and Alta Capital’s acquisition of Capella Eduinfra. As compared to September 2023, November the month witnessed a 15% increase in values, driven by four high-value deals totalling $1.4 billion.

The listing makes it one of the first nonfungible-token companies to make such a move and the first this year. The company is listed at a valuation of about 28 million Canadian dollars, or about $21.8 million. By market close that value dropped to a little over $17 million US dollars.While most companies delay <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/companies-scrap-ipos-amid-russian-invasion-of-ukraine-11646389980">their public launches</a> during market downturns, Mario Nawfal, NFT Technologies' cofounder and CEO, said this could be the best time for crypto firms to list on a public exchange."We've got more than enough capital, and we're really comfortable, and everything is really cheap," Nawfal told Insider. "An investment of a million dollars into a company would now cost 80 or 90% less, so if anything, we're in a better place." Nawfal said he hoped that listing publicly would help his company attract the "big money" in traditional stock <keyword id="11893875" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="markets" source="Orion">markets</keyword>. Wahid Chammas, the founder of the Cyprus-based asset-management firm TyreGate Capital, said listing in a bear market could help firms focus on "value creation as opposed to stock price." Chammas told Insider that investor expectations had been lowered, which could allow NFT Technologies to innovate without thinking about the volatility of the market.According to a Google Trends analysis, interest in NFTs peaked in January before collapsing nearly 77% in the past five months. Similar data from <a href="https://nonfungible.com/market-tracker?days=365">NonFungible</a>, a website that tracks the NFT ecosystem, suggested sales of NFTs declined 89.6% since a peak in September. But <a href="https://blog.chainalysis.com/reports/chainalysis-web3-report-preview-nfts/">according to the analytics firm Chainalysis</a>, investors sent over $37 billion to NFT marketplaces in the first five months of 2022, putting them on track to beat the $40 billion sent over the past year. Chainalysis also said the number of unique buyers and sellers in the NFT marketplace had risen every quarter since the second quarter of 2020.Not everybody is convinced that this is a good time to list publicly. "The listing could present a challenge for our nascent company, given its exposure to the current crypto market. While that challenge is not insurmountable, due to major market headwinds, the listing may not shine as much as it would have a few months ago," said an NFT Technologies employee who spoke with Insider on condition of anonymity, because they were not authorized to talk to the press. He sees an uphill battle for the company since NFTs are still a novel asset with volatile peaks and troughs.For Chammas, the market for NFTs resembles the dot-com era for tech companies. "A few will rise to be unicorns and really impact our lives positively," he said, "But many won't survive." In Chammas view, while the dot-com era had its share of failures, the innovation it spurred has been unparalleled. For Nawfal, Facebook's recent rebranding is a good sign for crypto companies."Imagine if Ford twenty years ago changed their name to Ford Electric Cars," he said. "If people way smarter than me are changing their name to Meta, I don't know what else could be a good indicator."

That kind of unbridled enthusiasm is unlikely in 2022, according to Ajay Saraf, head of investment banking and institutional equities at ICICI Securities in an interview to Business Insider. global interest rates, tapering, central bank prioritising inflation over growth and increasing interest rate earlier than expected, which might make the market volatile and IPOs may not be as smooth and great as 2021,” said Saraf. If the market mood is uncertain, then the companies planning IPOs are likely to be less confident in seeking high valuations. Startups like <keyword id="143842" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="mobikwik" source="Orion">Mobikwik</keyword> are already waiting patiently before they launch the IPO to get the best price. Founder Upasana Taku told Business Insider that she is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/business/startups/news/mobikwik-founder-says-they-are-not-selling-any-shares-in-the-ipo/articleshow/88392998.cms">waiting for the market conditions to improve</a> even though she has the SEBI approval to launch the IPO. Legendary investor Warren Buffet has said in the past that he has never invested in an IPO. “The idea of saying the best place in the world where I can put money is something where all the selling, and their commissions are higher, the animal spirits are rising, that’s going to be better than a thousand other things I can where there is no similar selling enthusiasm, and the desire to get the deal done and earn some commissions. That’s the best thing to buy in a single day?,” Buffett <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2019/05/06/warren-buffett-on-why-hes-never-bought-an-ipo.html">asked in an interview</a> in May 2019. In 2022, the animal spirits will be lower i.e. the emotional trigger for investments will be contained and therefore the valuations may be cheaper. “Valuation will become a bit more in favour of investors and that is the trend which we will see (next year),” said Saraf. If the IPOs are priced cheaper, it is likely that the headroom for profit is higher for investors, particularly for those who invest for the longer term. While this is general wisdom, it may so happen that the excitement may be lesser for some companies and higher for others. “Consumer tech and BFSI will lead the overall IPOs in terms of sector concentration in 2022,” said Saraf.
