"Wait 30 seconds for the red indicator light to turn yellow." So, I guess you just, like... little switch. It says to curl your middle lashes first and then do your side lashes. And you're supposed to hold the curler at the middle of your lashes for five seconds, and then move them to the tips of your lashes and hold it there for five seconds, and just repeat that motion, back and forth, until they're as curled as you want them. I have decided that I'm gonna test the heated lash curler out on my right eye first, because apparently that's the eye that I care the least about. So, it's yellow. I think that means it's ready. All right! Producer: Are you stalling? Kyle: Yes, I'm stalling. I'm stalling! [laughing] I'm shaking. Look at my hand. I'm gonna need you to hold it down. Like, hold me down and do it like eyedrops to a child. I hear the "Jaws" music in my head. [laughing] Two, three, four, five. That did nothing. I have been trying this guy out for several minutes now. I kind of have gone rogue, off book. I'm just kind of pushing it in, rubbing it around, combing it through the lashes. I do have some lift, and I mean some. There is action happening. It's just not as obvious action as I would have hoped for. I haven't given up yet, though, so I'm just gonna continue kinda combing through and pressing it, and we'll see how much lift we can really get out of this. OK, I'm done. These are my lashes. I think when I was using it I could see some lifting happening, but it was almost like it just pushed the hairs up, and they all just kind of went, "aah," after, like, five or 10 seconds. So it's not really lasting. Before these lashes deflate any further, I'm gonna try to seal in this little bit of curl with my go-to mascara. OK, so I use this mascara every day, and I know that my lashes do not lift or curl at all with any mascara formula, no matter how waterproof it is or how much of a "curling" formula it is. Well, after the most unforeseen plot twist, I am proud to report that I do have some curled lashes on this side. So, undeniably, sealing in that heated lash curler with mascara, I mean, there is some curl and lift action going on. I'm shocked. I don't really know where this came from. I thought a really good way to visually demonstrate how this curl compares to what I'm used to was to put it to the test against this. The Shu Uemura eyelash curler, which is known as the gold standard, best-on-the-market lash curler that you could get. It's just how it should work. So, these are my lashes curled and mascaraed. I was gonna wait till the end of the day and see how well the curls and the lift held up, but I think after my experience here this afternoon I'm kinda just ready to make my call, so let's get into it. I found that the Blinc lash curler definitely took a little bit of a learning curve to get used to and just comfortable having near your eyes. So it's not the easiest tool to use right off the bat. In terms of how well it curled my lashes, it didn't. [laughs] There was some lift that happened, but it was really once I went off script and just kind of, like, finessed it and wiggled it through my lashes to get some sort of movement out of it. I think the mascara really brought out what lifting was happening, but the overall result wasn't anything that got me excited about the idea of using it again. And did it last all day? The rate rejig decision taken by the GoM on GST rate rationalisation under Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary would lead to a revenue gain of ₹22,000 crore, the officials added. The GoM proposed reducing GST on packaged drinking water of 20 litres and above to 5% from 18%. If the GoM's recommendation is accepted by the GST Council, the GST on bicycles costing less than ₹10,000 will be reduced to 5% from 12%. The GST on exercise notebooks will be reduced to 5% from 12%, the GoM proposed. The GoM also suggested hiking GST on shoes above ₹15,000 a pair and on wristwatches above ₹25,000 from 18% to 28%. The GoM on rate rationalisation in its previous meeting on Saturday had discussed tax rate tweaks on over 100 items, including lowering taxes on certain goods from 12 to 5%, to give relief to the common man. Some items in the 18% slab like hair dryers, hair curlers, and beauty or make-up preparations that the GoM took up could be back in the 28% bracket. The six-member GoM also includes Uttar Pradesh Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna, Rajasthan Health Services Minister Gajendra Singh, Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, and Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal. <h2>Term life insurance, senior citizens' health coverage may be exempt</h2>GST on term life insurance premiums and premiums paid by senior citizens for health cover is likely to be exempted from tax, an official said on Saturday. The GoM to decide on the GST rate on life and health insurance met on Saturday and decided to exempt GST on premiums paid for health insurance with coverage of ₹5 lakh for individuals other than senior citizens. The final decision in this regard will be taken by the GST Council The premiums paid for health insurance coverage of above ₹5 lakh will continue to attract 18% GST. Currently, 18% GST is levied on life insurance premiums paid for term policies and family floater policies. "GoM members are broadly on board for cutting my rates on insurance premiums. A final decision will be taken by the GST Council," an official said. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary said, "Every GoM member wants to give relief to people. Special focus be on senior citizens. We will submit a report to the council. A final decision will be taken by the council". However, there might be no GST on insurance premiums paid for senior citizens, irrespective of the coverage amount. The GST Council in its meeting last month had decided to set up a 13-member GoM to decide on tax on health and life insurance premiums. Together, they promoted lip gloss and other products from Jeffree Star Cosmetics.It had been a long time since I'd watched Star's content, which usually highlights his lavish lifestyle and harsh but honest makeup opinions. He's also known for getting involved in internet scandals. Influencers have always been, at least to some extent, glorified salespeople. Still, I couldn't help but cringe. Their voices sounded different, like anxious sales reps trying to get my attention. There was a blatant urge to sell, sell, sell.Some millennial-aged viewers shared similar, and often harsher, thoughts."I'm sad. I used to be able to trust all of your reviews because you were doing it for the love of the game. Not commission. ," one person commented on one of Westbrook's TikToks promoting her recent stream."You are getting worse than Kylie Jenner," another person wrote on one of Star's videos. "It's every other day some kind of BS sale or relaunch. I miss the old Jeffree Star, this new desperate JS sucks!!"I was right there with them. Seeing these larger-than-life figures go from the top of the beauty food chain to hosting flash sales QVC-style was jarring. But as I later realized, their tactic is also kind of genius: They're using a free platform to directly sell to consumers while also increasing their brand awareness.<h2 id="a37382ed-7f93-446c-af1a-672ba960b013">YouTubers turned TikTokers</h2>Rewind a few years and beauty influencers dominated the cosmetics industry alongside the audiences they built<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/youtube-beauty-everything-you-need-to-know-jeffree-james-nikkietutorials-2020-3"> on YouTube</a> — even when their careers were rife with scandal.<a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/pictures/gjdm45jih/7-michelle-phan-3-mil/">Forbes</a> reported Michelle Phan, who is widely credited as the first internet makeup influencer, as one of the top-earning YouTubers of 2015 with $3 million in annual revenue. Lucrative beauty businesses only exploded from there.YouTuber Jaclyn Hill famously collaborated with Becca Cosmetics on a glimmering highlighter in 2016, bringing the company <a target="_blank" href="https://wwd.com/beauty-industry-news/color-cosmetics/latest-becca-x-jaclyn-hill-collaboration-did-3-5-million-in-sales-with-online-launch-10438768/">$3.5 million</a> in online sales across five hours. Two years later,<a target="_blank" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/natalierobehmed/2018/12/03/highest-paid-youtube-stars-2018-markiplier-jake-paul-pewdiepie-and-more/"> Forbes </a>said Star reached $18 million in annual earnings — partially because of one of his<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jeffree-star-made-20-million-on-eyeshadow-palette-shane-dawson-2019-10"> stand-out products</a> brought in $20 million when it first launched, as Star told fellow YouTuber Shane Dawson.Star then created a collaboration line with Dawson, who's best known for posting controversial comedy sketches and videos exploring conspiracy theories. Fellow beauty YouTubers James Charles and Laura Lee also followed suit. These creators have often taken an interactive sales approach with their streamed events.Star, for example, has hosted makeup masterclasses alongside professional artists so that viewers can learn how to use specific products from his brand, Jeffree Star Cosmetics, and then receive discounts on them via<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/tiktok-shop-better-at-keeping-customers-than-temu-shein-2024-4"> TikTok Shop</a>.Charles, on the other hand, has focused his efforts on making his brand's cosmetic sponge the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@jamescharles/video/7403479049974205727?lang=en">top-selling makeup blender</a> on the platform.Westbrook and Lee have taken a different approach, seemingly partnering with companies to sell products for them on the TikTok commerce platform at discounted rates. Still, they've made their efforts personal.Lee, like Star, has packed orders by hand on camera during their livestreams, and Westbrook has demonstrated the tools and makeup she's promoted on herself.In doing so, Rawitz said that these creators merge the old-school ways of long-form YouTube content with the modern, quick-moving platform of TikTok."They don't necessarily have to learn new tricks or try to adapt with creators who are coming up within the short-form video ecosystem," he said. A TikTok live on the Jeffree Star Cosmetics page hosted on July 24 lasted around four hours, while Westbrook was live for eight hours straight on July 10.Leah Spector, the director of communications and content at CreatorIQ, said these lengthy livestreams are strategic for earning revenue, maintaining engagement, and attracting new fans."The longer you go live, the more likely you are to capture new viewers throughout," she told BI. "When I see that there's 20,000 people watching a live, I'm like, 'Oh, something interesting must be happening. Let me join in.' It's simply a numbers game of getting more people to join, even if they drop out pretty quickly."<h2 id="a8007cff-9f23-437a-8383-dbe38a08fe16">Influencers don't care if it's cringe — and they shouldn't</h2>Westbrook, in particular, has been inundated with criticism and cringe callouts each time she's promoted her livestreams on TikTok."This feels like HSN," one person commented on her page, while others joked she's in her "QVC era."Influencers, however, seem to be in on the joke. Westbrook posted a video on July 10 poking fun at her livestreams."Clearly, creators don't mind and are leaning into the potential cringiness of the format," Rawitz said. They can do so with the help of longtime fans standing behind them. Mazaiah Hutchinson, a 27-year-old from Pennsylvania, has watched beauty influencers for over a decade. She told BI that, naturally, she's followed stars like Westbrook to TikTok.She views livestreams as a way to connect with her favorite creators and finds the QVC style of selling to be nostalgic."We look up to these creators, so it's really nice to be in their presence," Hutchinson said. "You can send a comment and immediately get a response back. You can actually see in real time what they're doing."In some ways, I understand the appeal.While writing this analysis, I tuned into a livestream hosted on the Jeffree Star Cosmetics account. As random makeup artists loudly did product demos for two hours, I found myself wishing something more exciting would happen — like an appearance from Star himself.<h2 id="e3f6e400-9adc-4054-8222-87334c14392b">Beauty business moves</h2>TikTok livestreaming is a big business with big money attached.ASMR influencer Lucy Davis <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-do-tiktokers-make">previously told BI</a> that she earns between $20 and $300 each time she streams, while Jakey Boehm, a TikToker who streams himself sleeping, said he's earned $34,000 in a single month.Rawitz said that while it's unclear exactly how much these beauty influencers are personally earning through these live streams, hosting them has obvious benefits. They have the potential to earn money through products they sell, donations sent by viewers, and new fans who become regular consumers.In the words of one fan who commented on a post from Star: "You bring the beauty, I'll bring the debit card.""If they're devoting this much time to it, then it is likely profitable for them and likely, in the end, profitable for the brand," he said.That's not to mention how crucial TikTok Shop has been to the success of beauty labels in 2024 — especially when influencers promote their products.According to CreatorIQ, Jeffree Star has generated at least $686,298 in<a target="_blank" href="https://www.creatoriq.com/blog/earned-media-value-emv"> Earned Media Value (EMV)</a> for E.l.f. Cosmetics via TikTok this year so far. EMV is a metric used throughout the social media industry — and analyzed with proprietary technology at CreatorIQ —to help determine the value of any creator's social-media content about different brands. Ultimately, the benefit of these lengthy live streams seemingly exceeds profit.Creators who once needed expensive lighting rigs, scandal-proof scripts, and hours to edit YouTube videos can now casually hop on live streams without any of that. Better yet, they can also have employees host for them.Live events, especially those that last hours, aren't always recorded, so the chances of becoming embroiled in a scandal are arguably less likely.But maybe most importantly, beauty influencers no longer need audiences to worship them, watching every clip they post across every social media platform. Instead, they just need us to stick around long enough to make a purchase.

We discussed the merits of early sex education and the importance of teaching our sons about consent.Sometimes, we chatted about lighter topics like eyelash curlers and brands of face cream, but I enjoyed those conversations, too. We all lead very busy lives, and most of us live in different areas of Australia and the world (our fifth friend is based in Hong Kong). It's hard to know when exactly we might have the opportunity to connect again for another overseas adventure.However, one thing's for sure. The memories of our trip will sustain us until we meet again — and there will be a next time, even if it's another decade in the making.

Thomas doesn't see it that way. She told Insider that getting ready made her feel empowered. Showing up to a breakup "looking bad" wouldn't feel "liberating," she explained."Sometimes your outer appearance can make your inner self feel better," she said. "He kind of laughed about it," she said, adding that when his friends saw it, "he was a little embarrassed at first." If people feel they need to make themselves attractive in order to share their messy moments, the videos may be less empowering than they seem.For example, in some GRWM breakup videos, creators narrate choosing outfits and makeup based on their partner's preferences. "I know he likes me in really tight clothing," Christina Page told viewers in a <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@christinapage/video/7128940350952983854">TikTok video posted on August 6</a>. There's also the issue of the online echo chamber. Pauline Boss, a therapist who's an expert on loss, described a TikTok as a monologue. When you upload a controlled message and the algorithm delivers it to people whose tastes and worldviews might resemble your own, they might be more likely to validate your opinion unchallenged and en masse."These posts, in some ways, are the immediate gratification of filling the hole of pain and loss inside us," Gottlieb noted. "But the work of grieving is to not fill up that hole immediately."<h2>'You never know how it could help someone'</h2>Potijaroen said that while she didn't post looking for support, she ended up finding it anyway."It helped hearing from people who've done this before. It helped me see a light at the end of the tunnel," she said. Commenters who'd gone through similar experiences shared that they'd eventually gotten back together with their high-school sweethearts.Potijaroen said she doesn't want to discount the importance of her in-person support system, but the online validation still helped her grieve — and for others, that may be the only option."Some people aren't as lucky," she said. "Some people don't have solid friends or parents or siblings that they could go to for help."She encourages skeptics of the GRWM videos "to keep an open mind.""I feel like it's very easy for the older generation to critique everything. They're like, 'Oh, why are you doing this? Why are you doing that? It's too much information, nobody cares,' and stuff like that," she said. "But it's like, well, think of it from this point of view: You never know how it could help someone."
