How to turn off and opt out of Amazon Sidewalk to save your bandwidth

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Santiago Varela designed the <keyword id="3875771" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="show-jumping">show jumping</keyword> course at the Tokyo Olympics.</li><li>He has to make quick decisions about the course on the day of the event.</li><li>He tells journalist Clara Murray: "The life of horses and riders is in my hands."</li></ul><p>I started show jumping at a very young age. Once, when I was competing in the children's category at the Spanish Championships, I approached the course designer and asked if I could be in the arena to help him set up the fences. That's when my career as a course designer began.</p><p>I began designing at the Madrid Horse Show from 1984 until 1998. I then worked my way up through <a href="https://www.fei.org/">Fédération Equestre Internationale</a> - the international <keyword id="6686960" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="equestrian">equestrian</keyword> governing body. I designed various Grand Prix, World Cups, and regional championships.</p><p>Climbing the ranks in the FEI is very structured. I am Level 4 - the highest. </p><p>This is my first Olympics as the course designer, but I was involved with the Rio 2016 course as a technical delegate, assisting with setting up the course and arranging walk-throughs with the competitors. </p><p>When I was first asked to design this course, I decreased the pressure in my other career. I decided when I was young that I would have two, having studied economics and worked in the infrastructure business.</p><p>I started some new projects when the Olympics were postponed, possibly cancelled. In September 2020, I became CEO of AGR-AM, a renewable energy asset management arm of Ardian.</p><p>So now, I am working very hard. Having this passion for horses means that if I need to sleep a little less, or work on the weekends, I'll do it. </p><p>Many times I spend all my holidays with horses, not family. I'm lucky that my wife, daughter and son all understand perfectly that they are my passion.  </p><p>When I first start to design a course, I sketch it out on paper with simple lines. It all needs to flow - the most important things in this sport are rhythm and pace.</p><p>A course should challenge the horses, but they need to be able to jump it naturally. The tests are always there for the riders, not the horses. </p><p>My team has built around 60 fences but we designed more than 200 jumps that can be arranged in thousands of combinations. </p><p>We have tried to respectfully represent Japanese culture. Many people said we should use manga characters, but we couldn't as they are copyrighted.</p><p>We have been working on the courses for three and a half years but many decisions like the exact height and width of the jumps will be finalized in the arena.</p><p>We will need to consider the weather, floodlighting and ground conditions. Many times, you're walking the arena and, for whatever reason, you feel something needs to change. </p><p>We don't have time to test the jumps in the arena. The final course is only put together on the day. We can test parts of the course or individual jumps by secretly incorporating them into other competitions.</p><p>Once you're in the Olympic arena, it's like a melon, you open it and eat what you get.</p><p>If I make a mistake, I won't know until the first horse goes round. Then I have to see it 50 more times as the other riders go one by one.</p><p>Once, at the show jumping World Cup in La Coruña, I got a distance wrong. There was one extra stride in a double jump. The horses were landing too far from the second fence after jumping the first, which threw off the rhythm.</p><p>I stayed up all night watching the videos to analyze where I went wrong.</p><p>The life of horses and riders is in my hands.</p><p>I need to keep my mind calm to take these decisions under pressure. Sometimes there are only 20 minutes to make changes. Having a team to help is great, but, as the course designer, I have to be ready to take responsibility.</p><p>Working with horses helps to keep my mind fresh and relaxed. People ask how waking up at 4 a.m. on the weekend to start building courses from 6 a.m. is relaxing. If I'm honest, I also don't understand it.</p><p>My only worry coming into the Olympics is to do my best. There are thousands of variables and you can't control what happens in the arena. Even the top riders make mistakes. Nothing can be expected.</p>

Anthony Davis yelled 'KOBE!' immediately after he hit his game-winning buzzer-beater for the Lakers

<ul class="summary-list"><li>On March 25, 1944, hundreds of Allied prisoners launched a daring escape from a Nazi prison camp in Poland.</li><li>Despite their efforts, not as many made it out as planned, and almost none of those who did made it to freedom.</li></ul><p>Just after 5:00 a.m. on March 25, 1944, a German soldier patrolling around the <keyword id="642082" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Stalag-Luft-III">Stalag Luft III</keyword> prisoner-of-war camp in Żagań, Poland, noticed slushy tracks in the snow outside the camp.</p><p>As he got closer, he noticed a prisoner crawling through the snow. Realizing an escape was underway, the soldier fired his weapon in the air and called for help. Alarms went off all around the camp, floodlights were turned on, and four prisoners were captured at the mouth of a tunnel.</p><p>In the hours that followed, the Germans realized the full extent of <a href="https://s.telegraph.co.uk/graphics/projects/great-escape/index.html" target="_top">the escape</a>: 76 men had made it out in the largest escape attempt of the war. Almost all of them, however, wouldn't make it to freedom.</p><h2>A plan to escape</h2><div type="image" title="Stalag Luft 3 prisoner of war camp WWII" height="2884" width="4338" msid="81653712" hostid="261"></div><p>It was supposed to be extremely hard to escape from Stalag Luft III. Run by the Luftwaffe, the camp was built on sandy soil, which made tunneling difficult. The prisoner huts were elevated so any tunnels could be spotted, and seismograph microphones were buried 9 feet deep along the fence line to detect digging.</p><p>The camp housed thousands of prisoners. Most were officers from US, UK, and Commonwealth air forces, though a number of prisoners and workers there were from other Western and Eastern allied countries as well.</p><p>The obstacles didn't deter Roger Bushell, a Royal Air Force squadron leader who was shot down at Dunkirk and had already made two escape attempts at other camps.</p><p>In March 1943, Bushell assembled an "Escape Committee" and planned a massive and extremely daring escape.</p><p>Three 30-foot deep tunnels would be dug to get roughly 200 men out of the camp. The escapees, with forged documents, civilian clothes, maps, and compasses, would then take trains or hike to a neutral country or seek out friendly resistance groups.</p><p>Failing that, they were to remain on the run for as long as possible to force the Germans to divert war resources to their recapture.</p><h2>A massive effort</h2><div type="image" title="Stalag Luft 3 prisoner of war camp WWII" height="2903" width="4341" msid="81653714" hostid="261"></div><p>About 600 prisoners worked on the plan for a year. Fifty complete suits were made almost from scratch, 4,000 maps were procured or duplicated, and 500 compasses were distributed. Hundreds of forged documents, like travel passes and worker papers, were created as well.</p><p>About 100 tons of sand was excavated by hand during construction of the tunnels and discreetly distributed around the prison grounds. Wood from 4,000 bed boards, 62 tables, 34 chairs, and 76 benches was used for support beams and ladders in the tunnels, codenamed Tom, Dick, and Harry.</p><p>"Tom" was discovered by the Germans in September 1943, while "Dick" was abandoned and used for storage after the area it led to was cleared for camp expansion.</p><p>That left "Harry." Built under a stove in hut 104, it was 336 feet long and 2 feet wide. Electric lights were strung throughout the tunnel, which also had a small trolly line and an air pump to circulate air.</p><p>The tunnel was declared ready for use by March 14, but Bushell and the Committee wanted to wait for a cloudy and moonless night to attempt the escape. On March 24, weather conditions were supposed to be favorable, and the escape was a go.</p><h2><keyword id="228884" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Great-Escape">The Great Escape</keyword></h2><div type="image" title="Stalag Luft 3 prisoner of war camp WWII" height="2896" width="4245" msid="81653717" hostid="261"></div><p>The escape began at 8:45 p.m., with 200 men crammed into hut 104. But there were immediate problems. The freezing temperature and thick snow had frozen the soil just below the surface, forcing the escapees to spend over an hour digging their way out.</p><p>When they breached the surface, they discovered more problems. The tunnel was unexpectedly short of the tree line and just 15 yards from an external sentry tower. That almost led them to cancel their escape attempt, but the forged documents were date-stamped and would be worthless if not used.</p><p>One by one, escapees crawled out of the hole and into the woods. Progress was painfully slow; one man left about every six minutes instead of every two minutes as planned. To make matters worse, a nearby bombing raid forced the Germans to cut the power, and multiple cave-ins caused more delays.</p><p>It became clear they would not meet their goal of 200 escapees. Bushell had already left, but the officer he left in charge decided to stop at 87, but the discovery of the 77th man brought everything to an abrupt halt.</p><p>At the tunnel entrance, prisoners waiting to escape began destroying their forged documents, maps, compasses, and escape rations.</p><p>The guards forced all prisoners out of their huts and tried to determine who was missing. The prisoners tried their best to buy time for their comrades by giving false names and milling about, but they were threatened with execution if they didn't comply.</p><p>Within hours, the entire area was on alert.</p><h2>A tragic ending</h2><div type="image" title="Germany WWII prisoner of war Stalag Luft 3" height="1364" width="2000" msid="81653718" hostid="261"></div><p>A massive manhunt began as soon as the scale of the escape was clear. Within two weeks, 73 had been recaptured. Infuriated by their brazenness, Hitler ordered all escapees be executed - a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions.</p><p>German generals argued that doing so would risk Allied reprisals against captured German airmen, and Hitler instead ordered more than half be executed.</p><p>In weeks that followed, the Gestapo executed 50 men singly or in pairs. They were driven to isolated locations near the camp in an attempt to hide the murders. All were labeled as having been killed while resisting capture or attempting to escape.</p><p>The remaining 23 prisoners were sent to other prison camps, including Sachsenhausen concentration camp and Colditz Castle.</p><p>Eighteen Gestapo officers were tried for the murders after the war. Five received prison sentences, while 13 were sentenced to death and executed.</p><p>Only <a href="https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/greatescape/three.html" target="_top">three airmen</a> successfully escaped.</p><p>Two Norwegian pilots, Per Bergsland and Jens Müller, reached Stettin, where they secured passage to neutral Sweden on a Swedish ship. They then flew to Scotland and spent the rest of the war as flight instructors in Canada.</p><p>Bram van der Stok, a Dutch pilot, made it to neutral Spain with the help of the multiple resistance groups. He returned to Britain through Gibraltar and served in the rest of the war as a fighter pilot.</p>

Instead of leading his company into one of the most anticipated initial public offerings (IPO) of the year, Neumann has been demoted to non-executive chairman and lost control.</p><p>Neumann may have thought his success in launching WeWork, as evidenced by an astronomical pre-IPO valuation of <a href="https://pitchbook.com/news/articles/wework-may-cut-valuation-again-amid-investor-concerns">$47 billion</a> in January, exempted him from the rules that apply to everyone else. The 40-year-old executive may have believed it was really all about him - ironic, for a company called "We."  </p><p>In the end, that was his undoing. His wife, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/rebekah-neumann-stepping-down-from-wework-2019-9">Rebekah</a>, is also reportedly stepping down from her various roles, including CEO of WeGrow, the company's educational arm. Now, Neumann joins the ranks of disgraced founders, among them Uber's <a href="https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/08/behind-the-epic-meltdown-that-ended-travis-kalanick">Travis Kalanick</a>. But Neumann was apparently still under the impression that, as head of a private company, he could get away with bad behavior. </p><p>While it's true that there may not be as much visibility within a private company, Neumann was entering the public realm with the planned IPO. That means multiple stakeholders - and no secrets. With the public realm comes the oversight of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and regulatory disclosure such as Sarbanes-Oxley, as well as an audit committee and a compensation committee composed of solely independent directors. It's like standing on Wrigley Field under the cover of darkness, thinking that you're invisible. Then suddenly someone flips the switch and you're under the glare of the floodlights - every move you make is scrutinized. That's what it's like to be the CEO of a public company who is answerable to numerous stakeholders. </p><p>This visibility makes it imperative for leaders to be values-based with a commitment to do the right thing, even when that requires a counterintuitive approach. One of the best examples is Rick Waddell, who was just three months into his job as CEO of Northern Trust Corporation when the financial crisis hit. The bank took actions to protect clients from the brunt of the crisis, including to purchase some illiquid securities from clients so these individuals would not suffer a cash crunch. Taking the high road did have its costs, but over the long run, the decision to protect clients paid off favorably with investors, who saw the bank as a <a href="https://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20100619/ISSUE01/100033568/banking-industry-s-meltdown-is-northern-trust-s-opportunity">safe haven</a>.</p><h2>Is Neumann surprised that it came to this? </h2><p>After Neumann's departure from running the company, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/wework-cleans-house-looks-to-trim-staff-close-to-ex-ceo-sell-private-jet-11569531640?mod=hp_lead_pos4">reports</a> of paring staff, selling a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/wework-is-putting-neumanns-60-million-jet-up-for-sale-2019-9">private jet</a>, and shedding other assets raises questions about why the WeWork valuation was so high in the first place. Earlier this month, We said it was <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/09/16/the-we-company-reportedly-will-put-its-public-offering-on-hold/">postponing its IPO</a> until later in the year.</p><p>In <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2019/09/24/report-weworks-adam-neumann-to-step-down-as-ceo/">a statement</a>, Neumann said that "while our business has never been stronger, in recent weeks, the scrutiny directed toward me has become a significant distraction, and I have decided that it is in the best interest of the company to step down as chief executive." Whether the decision was really his or, as reports indicate, he succumbed to pressure, one has to wonder: Is Neumann surprised that it came to this? </p><p>A healthy dose of self-awareness and having personal advisors may have made him more aware of the impact of his behavior. The foundation of values-based leadership is self-reflection - to constantly examine one's decisions, actions, and behaviors and weigh them against one's values. Without self-reflection, it's far too easy to get led astray with rationalization or a chorus of "yes people" who aren't willing to speak up about their concerns.</p><p>That's a lesson that Neumann is learning now, the hard way.</p><p><em>Harry Kraemer is a professor at </em><a href="http://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/"><em>Kellogg School of Management</em></a><em> at Northwestern University and former CEO of Baxter. Adam Neumann's fall shows how going public can crush a startup CEO

<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5d4499442516e91be8485d21-1200/angkor wat shutterstock cambodia.jpeg" alt="angkor wat shutterstock cambodia" /><p class="source"><span>Shutterstock</span></p><ul class="summary-list"><li>The <a href="https://whc.unesco.org/en/list/668/">UNESCO World Heritage-listed Angkor</a> in Cambodia is the <a href="https://www.history.com/topics/landmarks/angkor-wat">largest</a> religious monument in the world.</li><li>The temples and structures of the Angkor archaeological site sprawl across 154 square miles and received <a href="https://www.phnompenhpost.com/business/angkor-hosts-26m-visitors">2.6 million</a> visitors in 2018.</li><li>The annual <a href="https://worldsmarathons.com/marathon/angkor-wat-international-half-marathon">Angkor Wat International Half Marathon</a> began as a small NGO-led fundraiser in 1996 to raise money for the victims of landmines, the grim relics of the civil war that ravaged the country and its people in the 1970s.</li><li>I ran the 5k race in December and the early start time gave me the perfect window of time to explore the ruins alone.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Many of us who live in cities tend to forget what night really looks like. But far from the glow of streetlights and buildings, I found nighttime truly was pitch-black on the outskirts of Siem Reap, Cambodia.</p><p>At least, that's my excuse for how I came to be standing in front of one of the most famous sights in the world, the fabled Angkor Wat, without even knowing it.</p><p>I had always wanted to explore Angkor. When I saw that <a href="https://worldsmarathons.com/marathon/angkor-wat-international-half-marathon">registrations</a> for the December 8 race were open, it was a carpe diem moment for me - why not finally go, and for a worthy cause, too? So I booked my flight to Cambodia and signed up for the 5k run.</p><h2>The race starts around sunrise - and that's a good thing</h2><p>It was 5:30 a.m., about an hour before sunrise, and night still shrouded the distance over the enormous moat that lay between me and Angkor Wat. The ancient edifice was silent and invisible in the darkness.</p><p>But I was not alone. Behind me were thousands of people. Floodlights illuminated the surreal scene and speakers thumped the latest chart hits. A DJ was warming up the crowd. From all corners of the world, runners had come to take part in the event.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e5eccb9fee23d0370757634-2400/1.jpg" alt="Angkor Wat Race" /><p class="source"><span>Sehra Yeap for Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">Lining up for the race before sunrise.</p><p>Flag-off for my event was 6:30 a.m. I had arranged for a tuk-tuk to take me to Angkor from my hotel in Siem Reap. The 4.3-mile trip, which usually costs about $5 (USD), cost me $10 that morning.</p><p>"Very early," was all my driver had to say about that, with a shrug.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e5ebd56fee23d6eb473c1b6-2400/2.jpg" alt="Angkor Wat Race" /><p class="source"><span>Sehra Yeap for Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">My tuk-tuk.</p><p>Getting around by bicycle is one of the best ways to explore Angkor. They are cheap to rent in town, costing about $1 to $3 a day. I had rented a mountain bike the previous day and wrangled it onto the back of the tuk-tuk with me so I could explore Angkor after finishing my run.</p><p>The start of the race, just outside the western facade of Angkor Wat, was packed with runners. I moved to the edge of the crowd and stood on a stone ledge, taking in the sights and sounds. Behind me, the sky was just starting to lighten. I turned around to look at the sunrise and a silhouette began to appear against the sky in the distance.</p><p>At that point, it quite literally dawned on me what I was looking at. I turned away but managed to capture a quick photo to remember the moment. </p><p>As it turned out, it was an enjoyable run, and I finished it in a respectable time (for my age!) of 39 minutes, which meant that it was still early.</p><h2>An early morning in Angkor Thom</h2><p>After the race, I went to find my rented bicycle, which I had chained to a post. To escape from the throng milling around the finish line, I rode a couple of kilometers away - against the stream of determined stragglers from the 21-kilometer half-marathon, still laboring by - to <a href="https://www.siemreap.net/visit/angkor/temples/angkor-thom/">Angkor Thom</a>. A little less famous than Angkor Wat, it is about four times as large, and just as profoundly beautiful. </p><p>As I cycled into the grounds of Bayon temple in Angkor Thom, the morning mists were clearing. </p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e5ebe54fee23d702b03d848-2400/4.jpg" alt="Angkor Wat Race" /><p class="source"><span>Sehra Yeap for Business Insider</span></p><p>I found myself alone in the temple complex. In the cool morning air, far from the crowds, an uncommon silence prevailed. It was easy to contemplate what it must have been like on mornings just like this, centuries ago.</p><p>I traversed the Terrace of the Elephants, where Khmer noblemen once watched parades of royal war elephants. I climbed the three-tiered "temple mountain" called the Baphuon, with its <em>gopura</em>, or tower, soaring 100 feet toward the heavens. On almost every wall, there were intricate carvings in the sandstone, vivid in their portrayals of the people who lived and events that once took place here.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e5ebe9afee23d66c0078db9-2400/6.jpg" alt="Angkor Wat Race" /><p class="source"><span>Sehra Yeap for Business Insider</span></p><p class="caption">The author.</p><h2>To enjoy Angkor Wat, get there early - very early</h2><p>Except for one or two other people, who looked like temple caretakers, I had the place almost all to myself. I wondered why such a marvelous place would have so few visitors - and an hour later, when the first giant tourist coach came rumbling up the road, I realized why. Within minutes, more than 20 buses had arrived, disgorging hundreds of excited daytrippers. Angkor Thom began to teem with tourists exclaiming in many different languages and swarming over the ruins. </p><p>Because I had arrived so early, I had been afforded, however unwittingly, a glimpse of Angkor's elemental purpose, as a place of quiet contemplation and worship. It was now overrun by sightseers, many of whom had their backs turned to the monuments, arms outstretched, cell phones held out. Aim, click, and peer at the screen to check that the shot was good. In the 21st century, it seemed Angkor had a new function: as an Instagrammable backdrop for selfies. </p><p>The atmosphere had become that of a crowded theme park. The serenity of only an hour ago had evanesced. I got on my bicycle to ride back into Siem Reap.
