It has been edited for length and clarity.This story is part of "<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/how-the-pandemic-changed-my-career">How the Pandemic Changed My Career</a>," an Insider series documenting the moves and moments that shaped people's <keyword id="11894132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="careers" source="Orion">careers</keyword> over the last two years.At the beginning of the pandemic, my husband and I had an 8-month-old, and I was about six weeks pregnant the day that they sent me home from work — which I originally thought was going to be a week or two. With the exception of one day, I haven't been back to my office since. I work directly with the artists who do the exterior and interior design of cars — anything a customer would see, touch, or feel. As an engineering consultant, I help enable their vision and design. <h2>It's a very hands-on job </h2>We actually make full-size models in my studio — it's almost a workshop type of setting — and work with the sculptors and digital designers. There's a lot of sitting on desks, talking things out, and sketching. My husband works for the same company as a cost engineer, so he's more in finance.<h2>When they first told everyone to go home from work, I wouldn't let anyone in my house for the next three months </h2>We really toughed it out and locked down. In the beginning, it was just us pregnant with Evie, trying to get by with the same workload. Caring for an 8-month-old is all-encompassing. They want and need your attention all the time. We did our very best to try and balance when each of us had meetings, but essentially, it's a totally impossible situation. As soon as our daughter saw us, she would want us to hold her, hang out, read her books, play, and do all those wonderful things, so that was really tough. When things calmed down a bit, my mother started watching my daughter, but those were still pretty rough days because, at the time, I wasn't comfortable with her taking my daughter anywhere else. Dave and I went from waking up in the morning, leaving for the day, and having these eight hours that were truly dedicated to our work to trying to do everything online with our 8-month-old and my mother in our 932-square-foot bungalow without an office, at the same pace as before.<h2>There's been a lot of anxiety in our home </h2>Frankly, we didn't collaborate very well. It was so difficult to concentrate, and I think that there was so much guilt in not being able to do the jobs that we have in the way we want to complete them. We would actually feel resentful when the other person would take time to take a meeting. And I would look around and see all these other people who seemed able to do it, but obviously, everybody's in a different situation. We'd initially planned to send Evie to day care when she was 18 months old, but ultimately, when I had my son in October 2020, we knew that we were about to go into the COVID-19 winter surge experts were predicting, and I couldn't see how we could send a toddler to a day care and not expect them to bring COVID-19 home. I was also trying to protect my older family members, so we decided to stay home.<h2>I ended up finishing the basement myself as best I could when I was pregnant so we could get more space </h2>Sometimes, I'll work at the dining room table, the couch, or the kids' rocking chair. Generally, I feel like I'm in college again with a laptop on my lap. Sometimes Dave works at coffee shops and restaurants. It's pretty different from working at the office. I had my own desk, file cabinet, two full monitors, and a laptop. Our company did have an internal marketplace that was offering us discounts on home-office furniture and things like that, but we ended up turning our last spare bedroom that used to have my desk into a nursery. <h2>I feel like until this pandemic ends, it will be impossible for me to move forward in my career or even catch up</h2>I don't feel a connection with my coworkers that I used to. I feel like a name on a log-in screen, and my career has absolutely stagnated. I have to exceed my previous performance year upon year to progress. I can't do that when I can barely be present because my kids are here.I rely a lot on my social skills to further myself in my position because it's really collaborative, and because I work with more creative people, that aspect of my personality really works for me. But it's not something that I can flex sitting behind a computer screen. I haven't really been put on the same level of assignments that I was previously, and I don't think that's a dig from my boss — I have a very good relationship with him. He has three children of his own who are grown up now, so I think he's very understanding and supportive of not only what it is like to have a young family but what it is like to have them during this time. It is, of course, impossible to do two full-time jobs at once. I haven't rethought my career path, but I do have a feeling that these are the years to really make a name for myself, and instead, I'm mommy. I just won't be able to compete.<h2>I've become much more efficient at getting everything done </h2>When I take a 20-minute break in the middle of the day, instead of spending it to walk and get a coffee or a muffin, I'm loading the dishwasher. Or if I'm at a portion of a meeting where I'm just listening, I'm simultaneously getting things done around the house, so it really allows me to just be so much more efficient.I reflect on when I returned to work from my first maternity leave after three months — everything in the morning with my daughter was very hurried. I was trying to put on a full face of makeup and perfume and be this particularly presentable person. When I had to figure out my commute, my goal every day was that I could be there to feed my daughter breakfast and dinner. I had an hour with her before it was time for her to go to bed again. And that was really tough. People use work-life balance as a catchphrase, but it really can't exist in a timeline where your child's awake for only 12 hours. <h2>This really has changed my perspective on what we have been asking working mothers to do. It's honestly ludicrous.</h2>There needs to be more support in the pre-K realm for <keyword id="12109372" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="working-parents" source="Orion">working parents</keyword>. At the very beginning of the pandemic, I was running a large meeting with everybody on the vehicle team: directors, shape engineers, design managers, my boss — probably 100 people logged on to it. I distinctly remember running this meeting and having to go on mute to throw up and then go off mute to keep running my meeting, and then maybe my daughter would start crying and she would burst into the room and demand my attention, and I just felt so much guilt over that. Here I am just trying to juggle everything and feeling like I'm succeeding at nothing at a time that's supposed to be really joyous when you're expecting. You're kind of hoping to feel enveloped by your family and community, and yet no one's there to support you and really see or know how much you're struggling. <h2>I'm very much looking forward to a return to normalcy </h2>What we're expecting in my industry is that people got a taste of <keyword id="11929864" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="work-from-home" source="Orion">work from home</keyword> and they're not willing to get rid of that quickly. What I'm hoping for or foresee happening is that I'll do Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the office, where I get that benefit of in-person collaboration, and Monday and Friday will be more work-from-home days. There will be more flexibility for when your kids are sick. I think this has opened some people's eyes to what young working parents are dealing with. I'm just looking forward to that day where we have more balance and we're able to complete our work while our kids can go to day care — with the exception of when they get the flu or a cold or a fever instead of, you know, this frankly terrifying disease.

It sensitizes them to how much their partners have to do and leads them to want to share the load."Carlson noted that many families have two working partners, but the female partners "often shoulder a second shift of domestic labor and childcare. So, if dads can work from home, even if it's just occasionally, then this can lead to a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/goldman-sachs-employee-job-stay-at-home-dad-2024-8">more equitable division</a> of labor in families."<h2 id="df1b0888-a492-4f19-8260-b2647b7a7c94">Pluses and minuses</h2>Yet Carlson noted that a WFH father isn't a magical cure for families."Remote work is not a panacea. While it has benefits, it can also have costs," he said."Remote work can solve work-family conflicts as well as create them," he continued. "The question is how remote work fits into your life. It's not so much whether people work remotely, it's whether they have the option to do so, and the support to make it work for them."Having two people share a typically small space can lead to feelings of claustrophobia and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-work-from-home-affected-pandemic-relationships-2021-6">spark arguments</a> over who does more chores or more childcare.Work can also <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/australia-law-right-to-disconnect-ignore-calls-after-hours-work-2024-8">creep into the home</a> (think logging on after dinner or checking emails in bed), which can fuel stress and resentment, and make it harder for people to switch off.On the other hand, some people may feel pressure to complete household tasks during the working day. They might also feel obliged to run errands, such as mailing a package or picking up food for dinner."The parent who's working from home becomes the housewife," Jennifer Glass, a sociology professor at the University of Texas, Austin, told Vox last year. She said that was especially true for mothers but applied to fathers too.There's also a risk of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/working-remotely-feel-isolated-from-coworkers-quit-2024-7">isolation and loneliness</a> among the WFH crowd if they miss out on water-cooler conversations, after-work drinks, and office sports. They can <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/work-friends-spouses-loneliness-remote-hybrid-benefits-of-work-connections-2024-6">become detached</a> from their teams as longtime colleagues leave and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/work-friends-are-over-remote-jobs-gen-z-relationships-pandemic-2024-6">new faces join</a>, particularly if they only ever communicate virtually.<h2 id="44c4daa1-1bbf-4407-9401-3ea9d19fe558">Childcare concerns</h2>The lack of a commute and reduced presence in society could also mean people <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/work-from-home-sitting-standing-routine-better-health-2024-2">get less exercise each day</a> and develop unhealthy habits. They might also fear they're less likely to be promoted, or at <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/working-from-home-remote-work-increased-layoff-risk-job-market-2024-2">greater risk of being laid off</a>, if they're never in the office.There's also a heightened chance of <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-works-from-home-and-still-needs-childcare-explains-why-2023-1">distraction or disruption</a> when parents are in the same room as children or just a door knock away. They might be asked to watch the baby, pick up a sick toddler from day care and look after them for the rest of the day, or take their child to a doctor's appointment."Both mums and dads can get pulled into childcare when they WFH, so for both genders this is definitely an issue," Nicholas Bloom, a Stanford economics professor, told BI.He noted that studies show that moms are far more likely to be called upon in childcare emergencies than dads. He also suggested disruption might be necessary if there's no alternative.It's easy to see how having children can magnify the downsides of WFH. Sleep deprivation from staying up all night with a newborn can stoke arguments between partners. More people in the house mean more dishes and tidying up to do.The demands of childcare can also make it harder to finish work tasks during the working day, or to find time to meet friends, fueling stress and loneliness.<h2 id="e163a636-7fe6-4e15-a4b7-dbd3b3cad77a">Finding the right balance</h2>There's significant variance in how much WFH is best for a particular employee's health, Bloom told BI.Bloom, who's part of the WFH Research team behind the US Survey of Working Arrangements and Attitudes (SWAA), said about a quarter of respondents "<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dream-job-in-office-work-full-time-flexibility-benefits-2024-3">love fully remote</a> as they might live near a park or a gym, or just having the time and peace to WFH is great for exercise."Close to half of people like a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gen-xers-boomers-return-to-office-remote-work-hybrid-wfh-2024-6">hybrid model</a> or mix of in-person and home working. The final quarter prefers going to work every day, perhaps because of the social benefits and ease of joining team activities, Bloom said."I do find WFH saves on the commute, about one hour per day for the typical person, and that's a lot of time," he said. Bloom noted that he clocks a 50-minute run during the time saved from commuting most days."So my sense is the best WFH for employees' health is <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hybrid-work-from-home-office-culture-remote-jobs-productivity-happiness-2024-6">the one they choose</a>."If he's correct, dads experiencing some of the challenges of staying home might consider going to work more. But that's not always feasible if they're needed at home to care for a child or other relative.

Dads are work-from-home winners — but ditching the office has downsides

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Some companies are stepping up their RTO mandates.</li><li>Amazon and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta">Meta</a> have said you could be fired or dinged in your review for not going to the office.</li></ul>Because I said so.It's the answer every kid hates to hear. There's no rejoinder that won't get you in way worse trouble with a parent or authority figure who just dealt this verbal smackdown.The fights over RTO have lately taken on a similar end-of-discussion tone. Amazon gave managers the go-ahead to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-lets-managers-terminate-employees-return-to-office-2023-10">fire workers who don't comply</a> with an in-office requirement three days a week. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meta-rto-policy-updates-stricter-mandate-2023-8">Meta has taken a similar stance</a>. Google parent Alphabet has said it would <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-monitors-attendance-to-get-workers-back-to-office-2023-6">factor badge swipes into performance reviews</a>. Wall Street <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/return-to-office-rto-banks-hedge-funds-private-equity-2023-9">banks have been cracking down</a> as well.Employers have the right to do it, of course. Yet the flex misses a chance to have a savvier conversation over how being together can benefit workers' careers. And threatening to punish those who don't make it in goes against what we know about human nature: People don't like to be told what to do.Rather than counting badge swipes, employers considering ratcheting up their RTO demands could do better by focusing on keeping employees engaged and showing how IRL work can foster growth and development."Where leadership has fallen down is they have not articulated return to office in a way that is valuable to the employee's career," Chase Garbarino, cofounder and CEO of HqO, a company that provides operating systems for buildings, told Insider."It's a major mistake for anybody to come out and say the sweet spot is going to be three and a half days for anyone. I think the opportunity is for us to get off the silly construct of days in office," Garbarino said.Instead, he said, employers should be thinking about the things workers need to do well each week and when they benefit from doing those things around other people. "If we can make them 10% happier, we retain them for longer and, ultimately, they're more productive when they are at the workplace," he said.Some workers have been feeling decidedly unhappy over employers' back-to-the-office push. In some cases, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/manager-quit-over-rto-2023-8">people have been quitting over it</a>. And at least a few <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/remote-work-return-to-office-quit-job-micromanager-boss-salary-2023-4">workers might give up high pay</a> to maintain their WFH world.Many people are still logging on remotely when they can. Badge-swipe data from Kastle Systems shows that office occupancy rates at its customers in 10 large US metro areas reached 50.3% in mid-October. That's far below pre-pandemic levels.Paul Knopp, chair and CEO at KPMG US, told Insider the company mandates a hybrid setup but lets leaders decide on the best fit for their teams."The only real change in the last 12 to 18 months has been much more engagement with our employees about why being together two to three days a week is really great for their careers, and trying to help our employees understand why we believe it'll lead to enhancement of their skills and talents," he said.Knopp said being in person isn't about making sure that work gets done. The time the company spent working fully remotely during the depths of the pandemic was proof that people could accomplish what they needed, he said. The key now, Knopp said, is to find a balance between in-office and remote work that helps attract and retain workers while ensuring the company can maintain the type of culture it wants to have.<h2>Balancing being productive vs. being innovative</h2>Benjamin Granger, chief workplace psychologist at software maker Qualtrics, told Insider a consideration for management is the difference between happy workers and innovative workers. He said proponents of remote work will often say they're more productive at home. Granger said while that might be true, "company and group-level performance is not simply the sum of individual-level productivity. That's not how that equation works.""You could be more productive working from home, but more productive doing what? Are you working on the right things? Are we innovating? Are we collaborating in order to identify what those highest priorities are?" he said.Granger said both employers and employees tend to succeed when the focus is on bringing people into the office to work together and innovate. "That's where we're seeing the sweet spot of collaboration in the office, really getting focused, head-down work done when you're at home," Granger said. "That's paying off in terms of better job attitudes among employees in typically hybrid environments."Another consideration for employers is how dialed into their work their people are. "Engaged employees are contagious, just like disengaged employees are," Granger said.Garbarino said leaders should look past days in the office and focus on what they can do to help their workers develop. That includes leaders sharing their knowledge with others to help them grow."There's an opportunity to really use this strategically to gain a leg up by not just kind of following the crowd but being scientific about how you facilitate work at your organization," he said.

Amazon and Meta have raised the stakes on the RTO fight. Other employers shouldn't follow suit.

If that's the case, private-equity firms are starting to wake up to the fact they're sitting on top of the Permian Basin. While data analysis has permeated throughout most enclaves of Wall Street, PE remains one space where old habits die hard and dealmaking is still left almost entirely to the humans.Slowly but surely, however, progress is being made.Take Blackstone, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackstone-data-tool-analysis-real-estate-investing-private-equity-2022-12">which recently expanded a data tool</a> it originally <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackstone-real-estate-tool-data-strategy-tech-private-equity-2021-10">built for its real-estate business</a> to be used across its PE portfolio. The tool, called Data Direct, is meant to aggregate various sources of data in a clean, accessible way to help Blackstone investors manage their deal pipeline and existing portfolio, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/blackstone-data-tool-analysis-real-estate-investing-private-equity-2022-12">Insider's Carter Johnson and Bianca Chan report</a>. PE leaning more on data has been a slow, but interesting, build.As recently as just a few years ago, PE firms <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-private-equity-firms-are-hiring-data-scientists-and-analysts-2020-2">were just starting to warm to the idea</a> of building out data-science teams. And even then, some weren't buying into it. Fast forward to today, and some progress has been made, but we're still a ways away. A key piece of being able to use data in the most efficient way possible usually means leveraging the public cloud. The tech allows firms to run data analysis and manage multiple sets of information more easily than working with traditional, physical servers. But that tech has been a hard sell for PE firms as well, until recently. Many PE firms are just now <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-private-equity-firms-are-moving-to-the-public-cloud-2022-11">waking up to the possibilities of the public cloud</a>. To be fair to PE firms, figuring out how to incorporate data analysis into the investing process is no easy task. While other areas of Wall Street are ripe for having humans be supplanted by the data (e.g. trading), dealmaking, at least for now, still requires a personal touch. So you're left trying to marry these two worlds — traditional dealmakers and data scientists — together, which is no easy task.Just ask folks in the trading world trying to blend together fundamental and quantitative strategies, aka a "quantamental" approach. Private-equity firms are coming around to the idea of using more data in the investment process. It's still an uphill battle.

The company will be looking to hire more than 100 employees for its tech team by March 2022. The company has also announced a first-of-its-kind ‘Referral &amp; Joining Policy’, under which it will offer incentives to both new employees and the existing employees who refer fresh talent. These range between gadgets, appraisals and other perks. For instance, all new tech team joinees will have the option to choose between bike or gadget packages. The Bike Package and Gadget Package is available to anyone referring tech talent to the company. But it does take some getting used to. </li><li>Thankfully, I don't need to go out and buy anything new or special for my job. All I need is a laptop and an internet connection - two things I already have.</li><li>The best tip I can give to people who are new to working from home is to set a hard cut-off time to end the work day. It's easy to keep working and burn yourself out if you don't have your usual commute home to declare the end of the day. </li><li>Over time, working from home becomes much, much easier. Sign up for a diversity and inclusion training</h2>Back in March, there was no way of predicting just how urgent the conversation around inclusion and racial equality would become to so many businesses.To educate ourselves on better ways to support our POC team, clients, and colleagues, my entire company signed up for a virtual Diversity and Inclusion Workshop hosted by the Commerce and Industry Association of New Jersey. Organizations like CIANJ teach skills to help professionals make more inclusive business decisions, leverage DE&amp;I as a competitive advantage, and break down the barriers that prevent so many companies from having truly inclusive workforces.A diversity training is an excellent starting point for anyone in their ongoing journey to improving racial equity.<h2>3. Explore new business streams</h2>When the pandemic hit and millions of workers were tasked with working from home, I realized I had a wealth of experience in a territory that so many were entering for the first time, as I'd already been a WFH entrepreneur for the better part of a decade.My team and I immediately produced a "video call best practices" webinar — and sold it to dozens of companies, including the team at Northern Trust Bank. And because so many small business owners are now exploring new avenues to get the word out about their virtual products and services, we're planning a social media workshop for beginners this fall.Now is the time to explore the adjacent business streams you can create to serve new customers — or better yet, existing ones.<h2>4. Wear some new work hats </h2>As a digital agency, the list of services our clients asked us to help them with during the pandemic was long.From crisis social media communications, to video call training, to teaching clients the fine art of live streaming as a replacement for in-person events, we amped up our service offerings to existing clients, while simultaneously adding more value to our client-provider relationships.We also had the chance to work on social good campaigns — like the anti-racism movement We Got You — with our client, NBA player Patty Mills, which earned <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/31/sports/basketball/spurs-patty-mills.html">national media recognition</a>. Take time to reassess your customers' additional needs, and develop a plan to deliver on them.<h2>5. Become a thought leader</h2>As someone who built a six-figure business while working from home over the last decade, I began reaching out to media outlets, asking if their readers might be interested in hearing my best practices about how to maximize productivity — while minimizing time and money. In one month, I was able to secure and publish four thought leadership articles for various publications.My <keyword id="70503" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="advice">advice</keyword>: Consider your own area of expertise — even if it's telling a story about a challenge-turned-opportunity. From there, explore what publications, platforms, or audiences would want to hear more about it.<h2>6. Refine your public speaking skills</h2>I step foot on about 25 stages per year (now virtual stages) — but that doesn't mean I can't get rusty.To ensure my public speaking skills remained fine-tuned in the months after the pandemic broke out, I scheduled six seminars in two months to universities across the country, from Carnegie Mellon, to Vanderbilt, to my alma mater the University of Central Florida. I taught students how to use social media to stand out to employers — and even secure internships should their existing internships be canceled or deferred as a result of the pandemic.Since most public speaking opportunities will be virtual for the foreseeable future, booking a virtual talk is a great opportunity to grease your wheels, when it comes to public speaking.<h2>7. Reimagine your branded assets</h2>In addition to redesigning our website, we also tapped our graphic designer to overhaul some very overdue branded assets, including our company logo, one-sheet, client proposals, contracts, slideshare presentation, and invoice template. (Next up: Email signature.)Refining your branded assets will ensure you're ready to go with the best version of your business, when business picks back up.<h2>8. Network with people who have the same job title as you</h2>Many of us consider people who have the same job title as us as competitors. But why not also look at them as peers?In the ever-changing world of social media, I'll be the first to admit that I can use all the help I can get staying on top of digital trends and new products (Instagram Reels, anyone?).To better stay in the mix, last month, I started a 12-person social media collective of fellow strategists, <keyword id="53533" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="entrepreneurs">entrepreneurs</keyword>, and experts to both network with and partner with to stay on top of our industry's changes.<h2>9. Give back</h2>Back in March, I <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-help-your-business-succeed-in-slow-period-2020-3#8-give-back-to-your-community-8">interviewed Impact Consulting CEO Lucy Sorrentini</a> about the top tasks her company was doing during this period, and her answer surprised me."While a pandemic might feel like a counterintuitive time for a small business to be giving back, it's actually the best time," Sorrentini said.As a small business who hasn't suffered a tremendous loss this year, we too wanted to do our part in giving back to other small business owners. To do this, back in March, we committed to gifting products each month that help entrepreneurs flourish while working from home. Get your legal matters in order</h2>Does your website have a custom privacy policy? Nail your company structure – and culture </h2>If you're in a position of leadership, take this time to ditch the tangibles — the ping pong table, cafeteria, or ice cream truck — and give employees the kind of workplace benefits they really want: trust, flexibility and better work-life balance.Does every call need to be a video call? Is an 8:00 a.m. meeting ideal, if three of your team members have to sign their kids into their online schools at that time? Do your employees <a href="https://www.speakfully.com/">have a digital hub where they can go</a> to air grievances, should challenges come up?Now is the time to incentivize employees with the things they truly need — not the things you thought they needed.
