Best broadband plans in India in 2022 – JioFiber, Airtel Xstream Fiber and ACT Fibernet

JioFiber's market share improved 85bp month on month to 16.9 per cent (launched commercially in Sep-19), Nomura said in a report. Bharti added 0.1mn subs to reach 4.08mn FBB subs (up 68% since May-20), with market share up 60bp m-m to 15.9 per cent. <keyword id="57998" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharat-sanchar-nigam-limited" source="Orion">Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited</keyword>'s (BSNL) market share further declined by 185 bp to 16.4 per cent share (vs 44 per cent pre-JioFiber launch in September'19), the report said. Without significant fund-raising, Vodafone Idea's network investments and 5G rollout would likely remain constrained, at least in the near term. Hence, we expect market share gains to continue for Bharti and R-Jio, the report said. TRAI data for November shows a slight improvement in industry numbers, with Jio gaining market share at the expense of VIL, UBS said in a report. After a large decline in September (driven by the 19mn subscriber loss reported by Jio) and flattish numbers in October, the industry witnessed a slight improvement in November, with overall subscriber base expanding by 1.2mn. Bharti gained 1.3mn subs (-0.5mn in Oct), Jio added 2mn subs (+1.8mn in Oct), while VIL continued to lose market share: it lost 1.9mn subs (versus loss of 1mn and 1.1mn in Oct and Sept respectively). Jio remains the market leader, with a subscriber market share (SMS) of 36.7 per cent (+10bps). Bharti and VIL ended Nov with SMS of 30.4 per cent (flat MoM) and 22.9 per cent (down 20bps) respectively. It is important to note that the tariff hikes were largely applicable from end-November / December, and therefore, December is likely to see some churn, UBS said. In fixed broadband, Jio surpassed BSNL to become the country's largest FBB provider. Jio now has 4.3mn FBB subs (+0.2mn in Nov), followed by BSNL with 4.2mn subs (-0.5mn in Nov) and Airtel with 4.1mn subs (+0.1mn in Nov). JioFiber adds 0.19 million subscribers, overtakes BSNL to become largest fixed broadband provider

India's overall performance in mobile download speed has increased consistently, with a slight dip in the months from December 2020 to April 2021. One way is by introducing a plan that’s offering half the speed at half the price. For users who feel like they don’t really need 100 mbps can opt for a 50 mbps plan at ₹399 without limits on data consumption. Hathaway’s also offering 150 mbps plans at ₹1,499 per month with a data cap of 1TB. The only catch is that Hathaway requires a minimum three-month subscription in other for users to sign up for its services. Airtel’s plans are pricier but allows you to carry forward data Airtel also has a broadband plan for ₹799 a month but it offers speeds of 40 mbps with data capped at 100GB. Airtel’s V-Fiber broadband is offering another 200GB of additional data for a span of six months within that plan — but it’s a mere fraction of what Jio and Hathaway have up for grabs. Airtel could have a leg up on Jio, depending on the conditions of plans, since it allows users to carry forward any unused data. If you’re looking for speed, Airtel’s 100 mbps plan costs ₹1099 per month with a data cap of 500GB and an additional 300GB for six months. It will have to rival Airtel’s 300 mbps plan pegged at ₹1599 per month that’s offering 600 GB and an addition 1TB for six months. Ambani did disclose that Jio Fiber’s plans, while starting at ₹700, will have options that extend to up to ₹10,000 per month. But, Jio also intends to lock in users with annual plans, and this offer might only be available for a ‘limited’ period. To connect to the services, Jio users will need to make security deposit of ₹4,500 and obtain the ONT device (GigaHub Home Gateway) provided by the company. Those looking to switch internet services should also study the ability of their provider to offer top-notch service, which is essential for broadband services. Airtel and Hathway’s broadband plans are gearing up for Jio Fiber’s salvo

Elon Musk-owned satellite company <keyword id="7612156" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="starlink" source="Orion">Starlink</keyword> has registered its business in India and it is in process to apply for licenses in the country, according to Sanjay Bhargava, India director for Starlink. The company's affordable satellite broadband services are being targeted in India in 2022, although its availability is subject to regulatory approvals. "Pleased to share that SpaceX now has a 100 per cent owned subsidiary in India. The name is SSCPL -- Starlink Satellite Communications Private Limited and the incorporation date is November 1, 2021. We can now start applying for licenses, open bank accounts etc," Bhargava said in a LinkedIn post. Earlier this month, Starlink announced that it will focus on 10 rural Lok Sabha constituencies to provide internet services. "I am also keen to have 30-minute virtual conversations with MPs, Ministers, Secretaries to GOI, or Principal Secretaries to states to see if they think 100 per cent broadband would help improve lives," Bhargava had said. "We will probably focus on 10 rural Lok Sabha constituencies for 80 per cent of the Starlink terminals shipped to India. The number of preorders from rural constituencies will be one factor that helps us select focus constituencies," he added. Starlink shipped 100,000 terminals to customers recently. The project aims to provide global broadband connectivity via a constellation of satellites. SpaceX began satellite launches in November 2019 and opened its $99 per month beta programme for select customers around a year later. Elon Musk-owned Starlink forms subsidiary in India, will soon apply for licenses

The solution to this problem could be satellite broadband connectivity that will cover even remote areas where telecom towers or fibre connections are hard to reach. There are already three companies planning to provide satellite broadband internet in India, and the latest to join is Tata group’s Nelco. According to a <a href="https://m.economictimes.com/industry/telecom/telecom-news/pact-with-telesat-likely-for-satellite-broadband/amp_articleshow/85190916.cms">report</a> by ET Telecom, Nelco is planning to offer satellite broadband services in India through the Canadian firm Telesat’s Lightspeed brand. Both companies are in the final stages of the arrangement, and plan to offer its services in India by 2024, the report added. Satellite broadband services aim to solve problems that mobile internet or fibre broadband can’t but it’s also the most expensive of the three. Tata and Telesat plan to work on the business-to-business (B2B) model wherein the satellite bandwidth will be offered to telcos so that they can provide to areas where mobile connectivity is weak. The two companies also plan to work on ways to make satellite broadband affordable in India. Telesat’s global plan for satellite broadband services include an investment of almost $5 billion for a constellation of around 298 LEO satellites. Although expensive, LEO satellites offer stronger signals and faster speeds than traditional fixed-satellite networks as they orbit closer to the Earth. Telesat and Tata plan to take things further with their satellite broadband services once the new Spacecom policy that should offer better clarity for LEO satellite systems operators and setting up in-country satellite gateways, is out. In 2020, the data traffic grew by 36% year-over-year primarily due to rise in <keyword id="122479" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="4G">4G</keyword> data consumption as 4G subscribers surpassed 700 million with 100 million new additions during the year, said the Mobile Broadband India Traffic Index (MBiT) 2021 report on mobile broadband performance in India. The research showed that 4G alone constituted nearly 99% of the total data traffic consumed across the country in 2020. "The phenomenal growth in data consumption in India will drive demand for enhanced broadband and fixed capacity," Sanjay Malik, Senior Vice President and Head of India Market, Nokia, said in a statement. "Industry 4.0 with various IoT and enterprise use-cases, immersive applications experience (AR/VR), smart home, factory and public safety use cases will spur LTE, 5G growth and data usage further." According to the study, the average monthly data usage per user reached 13.5 GB in December 2020, growing over 20% annually owing to an increase in data subscribers and mobile video consumption. New users from rural areas also contributed to the rising monthly data usage. Mobile emerged as primary source of entertainment and productivity as an average Indian spent approximately 5 hours daily on a smartphone which is one of the highest averages globally. Short video format was the fastest-growing content category, said the report, adding that total time spent monthly on short content is expected to grow four times by 2025. Relating to device trends, the report reveals that the 4G device base surpassed 607 million units reaching a 77% penetration level. A double-digit growth is expected in 2021 for the smartphone industry as people embrace hybrid work models, e-learning, and consume content over <keyword id="1245953" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="OTT">OTT</keyword> (over-the-top) platforms. With only 22 million fixed broadband subscribers, there is a significant growth opportunity for this segment. The decision was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi here amid demand from students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders to cancel it. The CBSE Board exams were scheduled to be held from May 4 to June 7 and the results were to be announced by July 15. "The Board Exams for Class Xth to be held from 4th May to June 14th, 2021 are hereby cancelled. The results of Class Xth Board will be prepared on the basis of an objective criterion to be developed by the Board," Nishank tweeted. "Any candidate who is not satisfied with the marks allocated to him or her on this basis, will be given an opportunity to sit in an exam as and when the conditions are conducive to hold the exams," the Minister said. Nishank further said that the Class 12 exams will be held later and the situation reviewed on June 1 by the CBSE, and the details will be shared subsequently. "A notice of at least 15 days will be given before the start of the examinations." The Minister mentioned that the decision was taken after Prime Minister Modi chaired a high-level meeting to review the examinations to be held at various levels in view of the developing Corona situation.
