The Indian Government recently came out with the second edition of ‘India Rankings 2017’ in a bid to rank institutes across several disciplines. In the second edition, a total of 2995 institutions participated, including 232 universities, 1024 engineering institutions, 546 management institutions, 318 pharmacy institutions and 637 general degree colleges. This time some of the sub-parameters were tweaked in a bid to have more robust system of rankings. Parameters such as research Impact, quality of publications, innovations, placements, student population, etc were gauged. Although the Centre-funded institutions, in general continue to do well, some of the state-funded universities also are prominent. Some private institutions and universities have also been quietly climbing up to take high positions, thus offering value for money to their students, going by their ranks. The Indian Rankings also evaluated the best management institutes. Here’s the list of top 10.

<ul><li><keyword id="6355690" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Bombay">IIT-Bombay</keyword> dominates the top 75 QS India rankings 2019 released on 16 October. </li><li>Among the top 10 are seven IITs, IISc Bengaluru, University of Hyderabad and the University of Delhi. </li><li>This is the second country-specific ranking by QS after China and the first QS rankings for India. </li></ul>According to <a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/rankings-by-location/india/2019">Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) India University Rankings 2019</a> published on 16 October, Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay is the best institute to pursue <keyword id="6375224" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-education">higher education</keyword> in India. The recently released rankings unveiled the top 75 institutes in India for higher education. The first position was given to IIT-Bombay followed by Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. Among the top 10 institutions are seven IITs located in Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur and Kharagpur, IISc Bengaluru, University of Hyderabad and the University of Delhi. The <a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/universities/indian-institute-technology-bombay-iitb">overall scores given to IIT-Bombay was 48.5</a> which were derived from indicators like academic reputation (52.5), employer reputation (72.9), faculty-student numbers (43.3), citations per faculty (54.1), international students (4.1) and internal faculty (1.8). IIT-Bombay stands at 162nd position in QS’ global rankings. Jawaharlal Nehru University was excluded from the ranking as it focuses more on research. The QS India ranking is specially designed to reveal the positions of institutions focusing on graduation or post graduation. Surprisingly, The only private institute to make it to the top 20 list was Birla Institute of Science and Technology As per the report, twenty out of seventy-five <keyword id="5111110" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institution">Indian institution</keyword> have scored full marks for recruiting highly qualified staff with PhD degrees. Further, nine students scored 98.4 in paper per faculty, an indicator which assesses research productivity. Why specific rankings for India? QS India ranking is the second region-specific ranking by QS after China. The British organisation has recently decided to bring out country-specific rankings beginning with China, India, South Korea, Japan and Mexico. The region-specific rankings are a response to the increasing demand of information from within the nation rather than in the global context. India’s educational system has witnessed a massive change over the last decade. It is the third largest higher-education hub housing thousands of universities across the country. The country was also ranked 24th in <a href="https://www.topuniversities.com/system-strength-rankings/2016#sorting=rank+custom=rank+order=desc+search=">QS Higher Education System Strength Rankings 2016</a>.

India’s IIT Delhi now ranks in top 500 world university rankings

India’s IIT Ropar makes it to the top 500 global universities for the first time

Times Higher Education (THE) world <a href="https://www.timeshighereducation.com/rankings/impact/2019/gender-equality#!/page/0/length/-1/sort_by/rank/sort_order/asc/cols/undefined">university rankings</a> recently rolled out University Impact Rankings 2019 focused on exploring universities across the globe based on United Nations sustainable development goals (SDG). This includes teaching, research, citations and industry income on sustainability front. Even elite institutions from India did not rank in the top 100, but there was a silver lining. While the mainstream Indian <keyword id="55119" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Institute-of-Technology">Indian Institute of Technology</keyword> (IITs) and Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) did not make it to the list of ‘impactful’ universities, a much smaller Indian university JSS Academy of Higher Education and Research secured a spot in 101-200 bracket scoring 80.8 points for citations. The JSS academy<a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/karnataka/jss-academy-finds-place-in-the-world-university-rankings/article25075539.ece"> reportedly</a> has a student base of 5,500 enrolled across 147 academic programmes in four campuses — JSS Medical College, JSS Dental College and JSS College of Pharmacy (all in Mysuru) and JSS Pharmacy College in Ooty. Globally, the University of Auckland, Canada’s McMaster University, University of British Columbia and the University of Manchester, UK were the top performers in the rankings. However, IIT’s Indore, Bombay and Roorkee campuses were ranked in the top 500 universities across the globe, said the report. Indian universities lag many countries in ‘social impact’ rankings: Survey

New Delhi [India], August 12 (ANI): <keyword id="19953789" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="IIT-Madras" source="keywords">IIT Madras</keyword> has been ranked the <keyword id="19925221" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="best" source="keywords">best</keyword> <keyword id="22759867" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="higher-educational-institution" source="keywords">higher educational institution</keyword> in <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> followed by IISc Bengaluru and IIT Bombay in an overall category in the ranking conducted by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). The announcement was made on Monday by the Ministry of Education at an event at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital that was presided by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was ranked first in the <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> 2024 and it is the 6th time that it has bagged the top spot in NIRF ranking. IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore and Calcutta are among the top five. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked as the best university in the country followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University's Hindu College ranked as the best college in the country followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen's College. The Chennai-based institute retained the No 1 position in categories "overall and engineering" The NIRF rankings lists was released for 13 different categories, including universities, colleges, research institutions, engineering, management, pharmacy, medical, dental, law, architecture and planning, agriculture and allied sectors, and innovation. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has been accepted by the MoE and launched by Honourable Minister for Education on 29th September 2015. IIT Madras ranked best higher educational institution in India

The Human Resource Development recently released the list of best Indian universities for this year, and the list of Top 10 Engineering institutes in India is filled with <keyword id="49737" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IITs">IITs</keyword>, from top to bottom. Outreach and inclusivity, along with global footprint, are the parameters on which every institute was ranked and would be ranked in future, for which the institutes need to go global. 
 
Needless to say, the relatively younger IITs, having secured places in the list, are now looking at ways to boost their academic brand in the best way possible, for which they have identified a target area of bringing in world class faculty. 
 For this, the IITs are looking forward to hiring faculty from foreign countries. For example, <keyword id="222212" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Ropar">IIT Ropar</keyword>, having secured the 9th place in the top 10 list, will start hiring from three countries and six locations next month, all the way from London to Los Angeles. 
 Similarly, <keyword id="656784" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="IIT-Gandhinagar">IIT Gandhinagar</keyword>, the 8th ranked institute in the list, will be hiring a bulk of its assistant professor level faculty from foreign universities. 
 
While hiring, the institutes would focus on Indian students doing a post doctoral in reputed engineering schools abroad. After interviewing probable candidates, they might even issue an appointment letter then and there. 
 
For the best hiring process, the hiring teams from IIT Ropar would have its Director and Dean, three external experts from IISc, IIT, Delhi, and IIT, Roorkee.

Global footprint requirement forces IITs to hire faculty from foreign shores

<ul><li>Indian universities rank almost as high as global universities in the engineering and technology domain. </li><li>According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, Delhi feature in the top 50 for the first time. </li><li>Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral &amp; mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical &amp; electronic engineering. </li><li>Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. </li></ul>Indian engineers are well known around the world. Now, its universities are being ranked high especially in the engineering and technology domain. According to the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by subject, India’s premier engineering institutions — Bombay and Delhi campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) — have been ranked in the top 50 universities for the very first time. IIT Delhi ranked 44th while IIT Bombay crawled up nine spots to rank 47th in the global list. Department-wise, IIT Bombay and Kharagpur rank at 41st and 66th for mineral and mining engineering and IIT Delhi stood at 49th for electrical and electronic engineering. "It is a significant achievement of our premiere engineering institutions, which has made India proud. This is the result of continuous efforts of our government to promote the environment of research and innovation in our educational institutions," Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' said. Overall, five Indian institutions ranked in the top 100 universities, compared to three last year. This includes IIT Madras, Kharagpur and Kanpur. "This is the result of the various measures we have taken in the institute on boosting the research ecosystem on the campus, strengthening our connect with the external stakeholders, significantly enhanced internationalization efforts from the institute and various other measures initiated in the last three years," IIT Delhi director V Ramgopal Rao told news agency PTI. This comes as good news to the Indian universities that were striving to make a mark, globally. Nearly 20 universities were ranked in the top 200 in the <a href="https://www.qs.com/rankings-revealed-qs-wur-asia-2020/">QS World University Rankings: Asia 2020</a> this year. However, the IITs — Bombay, Delhi and Madras campuses — did not make it to the top 30. Ahead of college admissions, <keyword id="56459" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-grants-commission" source="Orion">University Grants Commission</keyword> (<keyword id="44171" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="ugc" source="Orion">UGC</keyword>) has warned students against unrecognised or 'fake' institutions operating in the country. In the last two years, the UGC has identified 27 such 'fake' higher educational institutions in the country. With the admission process around the corner, students across the country have been asked to beware of educational institutions that are not established as per the UGC Act but offer degrees in contravention of stated provisions. According to <keyword id="693288" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="union-education-ministry" source="Orion">Union Education Ministry</keyword>, the degrees provided by such institutions will not be valid for further studies or jobs. Recently, the UGC detected two unrecognised institutions and is likely to soon release a fresh list of such institutions. According to a recent notice issued by the UGC, the 'Open International University for Alternative Medicines' and the '<keyword id="17077663" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="national-board-of-alternative-medicines" source="Orion">National Board of Alternative Medicines</keyword>' are running courses in violation of the UGC Act 1956. The UGC appealed to students across the country not to take admission in these institutions as their degrees will not be valid for further education or job. Earlier, the UGC had also issued a similar notice against the All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Science, a higher educational institution in Delhi. The UGC in its notice advised students not to take admission in "self-styled" institutes. The UGC from time to time releases lists of such unrecognised colleges, universities and institutes to make students aware of institutions, which are fraudulently offering degree courses. It also keeps an eye on such self-styled institutions in the interest of students. Last year, the UGC identified about 24 such higher educational institutions and declared the degrees awarded by them "invalid and fake". According to the UGC, students should thoroughly examine it before taking admission in higher educational institutions. Students and parents should make sure that the concerned educational institution is recognised by the UGC. These educational institutions can be verified on the UGC website. Significantly, the UGC and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), which promotes technical education in India, have also issued a warning against the educational institutions of Pakistan. In this joint advisory issued for Indian students, it was said that Indian students should not take admission in any college or educational institution in Pakistan. According to the UGC, students pursuing education in Pakistan will not be eligible to get jobs and higher education in India. UGC and AICTE have said that Indian students should not go to Pakistan for higher education. An Indian student going to Pakistan to pursue technical education, higher education or any other course will not be able to take admission in India for further studies or jobs.
